Waiting on the sun to ride after yesterday’s snow ๐ŸŒ… ๐Ÿšฒ

Figured if it’s a dress-up day for work, I won’t be able to ride to work or want to take the stairs up to my office. So it best to get out riding early. It looks like the main roads will just be wet, not super icy though I might run into some snow on side-streets, like Meads Road and Orchard Street. I don’t expect it will be that bad of a ride this morning, and it’s not super cold. But first the sun needs to rise a bit more. I have lights on my bike but I don’t want to ride in the pitch black, especially past the street lights on NY 32 and Meads Road.

Good morning! Happy Monday on this Bubble Bath Day. ๐Ÿ›€ Back to work today, no time for bubble baths. ๐ŸงผPartly cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 11. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Probably want a bubble bath by the time I get home from the ride this morning. And more oil on the bike chain.

This morning I made cornmeal paddies with an egg, milk, red onions, garlic, spinach, red pepper and salt. ๐Ÿ” I think with the garlic, salt and red pepper I might next time dial back it back a bit, as they were a bit more punchy then I’d like in the morning, but they were good. The spinach helped boost the fiber content plus topping them with greek yogurt and the egg in them really boost the protein content. I was pretty happy with how they came out, and will make them again though I still think I’d want to tone them back a bit. Just too spicy for morning food. Is corn as healthy as oats or whole-wheat? Probably not, but it has the different sweeter and oiler taste. Don’t need to add any oil to the paddies for sure, and they were good.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Between the warm weather, breeze and sun I don’t expect the snow to stick around. But we can really stick a fork in it come Wednesday with the rain expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 2008. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1923.โ„

Yesterday, I decided to make up some chicken soup ๐Ÿฒ for dinner, which was followed by pea soup and a small bowl of cornmeal porridge. Interested in finding new ways to use cornmeal. ๐ŸŠ Shredded a full orange in the food processor, to get all the flavor, taste and fiber of both the inside and outside of an orange. ๐Ÿž Didn’t make up any bread last night, I was kind of tired, but I probably will tonight when I get home.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:54 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:39 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:10 pm, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:46 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 14 seconds over today.

I’ll be the first to admit yesterday wasn’t the most productive day ever. ๐Ÿ›Œ Just a lot of reading, and watching Youtube and Udemy videos to learn more about machine learning and other topics. I probably should have gone out for a walk yesterday, ๐Ÿšถ but it was cold out ๐ŸงŸ and I wasn’t super interested in heading out. I kind of want to just get through winter at this point.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐Ÿ™, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Light and variable wind. Should be a nice night for the evening. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1968.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, rain. High near 45. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 32. Breezy. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Things could evolve but Saturday isn’t looking great for heading out of town but Sunday into King’s Day might be good. I kind of would like to get at least one night in the woods, preferrably two if I decide to head up to the Adirondacks or Central NY. Rensselearville isn’t so bad for just one night, but it still requires quite a bit of packing.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:17 pm. We are picking up quite a bit of time in the evening now, even if when I move to the Enterprise Drive office in the suburbs, there will be enough light in evening to ride back and catch the express bus home. The question now is just cold and snow. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1995.

The first snowy Sunday of winter 2024! โ˜ƒ

Winter has arrived though it’s not the dire emergency the weather pundets made it sound yesterday. A few inches of fresh snow, landlord hasn’t plowed the driveway yet but it’s not deep. Even the library is expected to open later on, though with an hour delay due to the snow.

Good morning! Happy Snowy Sunday. Snow is falling and 30 degrees at the in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

While I was up I stayed in bed ๐Ÿ› until nearly seven this morning ๐Ÿณ when I started my day frying an onion and ultimately spinach and eggs. I’m planning a quiet day at home to do some reading ๐Ÿ“– and studying.

Today will snow, mainly before 5pm. ๐ŸŒจ High of 30 degrees at 9am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 1915. 7.2 inches of snow fell back in 1994.โ„

Went to the laundromat ๐Ÿ‘• and the grocery store yesterday ๐Ÿ›’ after the snow started ๐ŸŒจ but the laundromat was still surprisingly crowded and Hannaford was so picked over and no bananas. ๐ŸŒ It’s kind of frustrating ๐Ÿ˜ค as I really like bananas. Also no whole wheat flour ๐ŸŒพ and the coffee โ˜• they had was really pricey.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 25ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:53 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:09 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:45 pm. At sunset, look for snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Thinking it’s a cold day and would be good for soup. ๐Ÿฅ˜ It would be good to use up the rest fresh spinach I have in the soup before it wilts and it’s a great way to warm myself up. Also thinking about using some of the corn meal I bought to make corn porridge for lunch. I still have some bread ๐Ÿž but I should think about kneading some dough up for baking tomorrow morning. We’ll see.

I think there is too much snow for biking ๐Ÿšณ and my skis โ›ท๏ธ are broke but I might go for a walk later ๐Ÿšถ and maybe go down to the library. ๐Ÿ“š Also want to clean the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ and kitchen. ๐Ÿงผ And just have a quiet day, maybe work on the blog code.

Tonight will have isolated snow showers before 10pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 24 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 8th. Maximum wind chill around 14 at 4am; Northwest wind 5 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1878.

Looking ahead, there are next week is the Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ when the sun will be setting at 4:55 pm with dusk at 5:24 pm. On that day in 2023, we had snow showers, cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2006.

Hoping to get out of town for Martin Luther King Day Weekend โ›บ but I’m not how good the weather will be. โ˜” It’s actually looking like rain for next Saturday then seasonably cold.

Buy Nothing Day Aka Get Out Doors Day ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐ŸฆŒ

REI promotes that so they can sell you more outdoors gear. I don’t need any more junk, I’m just ready to head out of town to the mountains to hike, camp and spend a few days away from the internet.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 29. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

That five hour energy shot โ˜• really wakes you up, combined with cream of wheat ๐ŸŒพ, strawberries ๐Ÿ“, banana ๐ŸŒ and some Greek Yogurt๐Ÿฅค for protein. Also had some edamane for extra protein boost as I’m hiking. Goal ๐Ÿฅ… is to be on the road before eight. ๐Ÿ›ป

Today will be partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 32 by 5pm. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2014. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1898.โ„

Today I’m heading up to Prospect Mountain โ›ฐ for a quick hike up there and then to the Adirondacks to camp for four days. โ›บ Packed the microspikes as I may want them for Prospect. Probably taking the steep trail from Spring Street in the village to the summit. Going to be a cold night ahead โ„, sunset comes early ๐ŸŒ‡ and I’m worried ๐Ÿ˜ฏ about the snow depth requiring me to drag gear back to camp so I want to make sure I get an early start both up and down the mountain and then to set up camp โ›บ. Plus I need to stop and get groceries like eggs and fresh fruit to eat up at camp. ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ›’

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:43 am with sun having an altitude of 26.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:44 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 4:57 pm, which is 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (93ยฐ) at an altitude of 23ยฐ from the horizon, 231,220 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:33 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over today.

Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ dinner with the folks was good but kind of bland and ordinary, the pie ๐Ÿฅง was very sugary. Still I treasure the family ๐Ÿ‘ช dinner ๐Ÿฝ as it may very well be the last or one of the last with mom’s cooking. She cooked all day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐Ÿณ and did her best to make a delicious ๐Ÿ˜‹ meal. I enjoyed it in the context of what it is. I think I’ve gotten more and more into spice while my parents like things with less of a kick. โณ Definitely when I start cooking Thanksgiving dinner myself I’ll use a lot more spice and less sugar and fat. Gravy is so bland and fatty unless you really amp it up with spice. Time spent with your parents, enjoying their home cooking in your forties is so precious.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 17th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 4am; Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1938.

Going to be even colder up north โ„, talking the single digits by morning. I got a fair amount of propane so I should be good. โ™จ Bringing the thermal underwear, insulated bib overalls and full face mask in preparation for a cold night ahead. ๐Ÿงค

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 9th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming south in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 2004. 21.8 inches of snow fell back in 1971.โ„

That should be good for charging the batteries ๐Ÿ”‹ as it’s going to be cold. Saturday and Sunday plan to just hike around camp โ›บ and do some reading ๐Ÿ“–, listening to podcasts ๐Ÿ“ป and relaxing away from it all. Need to tune into the weather radio to keep an eye on how much snow will arrive Sunday night into Monday and then decide if I should head home early. ๐Ÿก

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain after 1pm. Partly sunny, โ˜€ with a high near 43. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 45 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Friday is December ๐ŸŽ„ when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 40 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. Cue the cheesy Christmas ๐Ÿคถ music ๐ŸŽถ. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1934. Well before my time.

Fifty days remain in 2023 ๐Ÿ—“

Day by day. The fact that Thanksgiving Day Week is basically the week after next week shows how fast the year is coming to a close. While maybe it would have been nice to get out of town this weekend, I’m thinking today I’ll ride to Peebles Island and have some fun closer to home while trying to hold the line on expenses, though I’ll probably end up taking the 18 bus back home and will probably need to get to the grocery store and or Walmart this evening as I’m eating myself out of house and home again.

Good morning! Partly clear ๐ŸŒ… and 41 degrees in Delmar, NY on this Veteran’s Day. ๐Ÿต There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Not so cold for a mid-November morning, though it won’t warm up that much and it will be breezy.

Up a bit before six o’clock โฐ though I was awake before then. Decided to do oatmeal-banana pancakes with chia seeds today, ๐Ÿฅž topped with shredded apples ๐ŸŽ mixed with boiled apple cider, cinnamon, ginger and heated in the microwave. It was good. I have to admit I also had a bit more of that soup I made up last night — chicken soup I guess — ๐Ÿฒ though it was more of a stew with rich earthy overtones with lots of cumin and ground chili spice. Also finally getting around to cooking some chickpeas, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ might make hummus or just have them with various meals. Mom was suggesting putting them in soups. I also like them with fresh fruit, kind of like a trail mix without as much as fat as nuts, though they can certainly be good mixed in a handful of almonds, blueberries, and raspberries. ๐Ÿฅœ

Today is Veterans Day, which will will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2002. 3.0 inches of snow fell back in 1906.โ„

I am thinking about riding out to Peebles Island State Park in Cohoes. ๐Ÿšฒ It’s about 17 miles or an hour and a half ride each way. I am thinking I would likely ride up to the park, bring a lunch, walk around Peebles Island and maybe a little bit in Cohoes along the Canal. ๐Ÿ“ท Going to be a nice sunny day with blue skies for pictures. Then ride back to Albany via the Empire Trail, and catch the 18 bus back home. ๐ŸšŒ as I expect by then I’ll probably be running low on daylight and pretty tired as it’s a big trip. ๐ŸŒ† Days are so short come mid-November. I am thinking my next out of town adventure will be in a little under two weeks — the day after Thanksgiving through the following Monday, probably Route 8 on East Branch. Some quiet time off the internet.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:40 am with sun having an altitude of 30° from the due south horizon (-40.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (247°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:42 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 16 seconds over today.

Money is just kind of tight ๐Ÿ’ณ after vacation and renewing my blog contract and all the trips I’ve been taking. โ›ฝ I ended up transferring in $750 from savings to ensure I had enough money to pay my credit card bill and maintain adequate balance in my bank account through the money. It’s not a pay week but come Wednesday, $1,300 goes out to the credit card. Already earned $135 from blog advertising, though I won’t get paid until mid-December under the Google Ad Sense rules that require a $100 minimum unpaid balance at end of the month to get paid, and then they hold your check for three weeks to verify it and collect interest on it. ๐Ÿจ I know, it’s kind of obnoxious but I’ll probably earn at least another $30 or $40 bucks before the month is done to tack on the $135. Web advertising is a bit of a mystery, based on bidding — one day I earned like $11 in ad revenue which is crazy compared to a buck or two most days and when you multiply it out over the months, especially for a small little blog like this. It’s good I’m staying home this weekend.

Truth is I have a lot of money coming in, ๐Ÿ”€ but the thing is as soon as it comes in a lot goes out. I am continuing to invest heavily into my retirement accounts ๐Ÿ‘ด as now is the time to do it while I’m relatively young and making good money, ๐Ÿ’ต and also into my investment accounts so they can continue to grow and own my own land eventually. While interest rates are up on my savings account — close to 5%, with inflation I figure it’s better to be going into the stock and bond market, especially over the long term. There will be a recession ๐Ÿ“‰ but eventually we’ll come out of it and things will grow. I am hopeful I can pay back my savings account in the next few months, especially as some of those short term expenses like vacation come and go, though soon I’ll have heating bills, though so far I’ve avoided using the heat, though yesterday โ™จ๏ธ I finally put the screens in my window and patched the air leaks around the door, ๐ŸชŸ as I know I’ll need the heat before long. I have the heated blanket ready to go but I haven’t put that on the bed yet, though I will be ready when those days come.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1976.

Yesterday, I rode out to Voorheesville ๐Ÿšฒ and spent a lot of time reading and watching video and reading material for yet another Udemy class that I get free from the library. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Last week I finished a class called the Fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis, now I am a few hours into a class on Remote Sensing and QGIS. Basically it’s all about using data collected from satellites ๐Ÿ“ก to learn about what is happening on the earth’s surface. ๐Ÿ“š I was going to go down to the library last night but I was tired and comfortable in my bed, after enjoying that soup that I made earlier int he day. ๐Ÿ›Œ I figure this is the time of year to learn more, and Remote Sensing is only going to improve my GIS skills, especially combined with the use of raster math both in QGIS and R programming language.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ when the sun will be setting at 4:32 pm with dusk at 5:01 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 43 and 28 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 48 degrees. Opened this morning in Vermont. We hit a record high of 71 back in 1928.

Old Railbed Follows the Creek

Nostgolia on this Election Day 2023 โ˜•๐Ÿ™ˆ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ

This year I’m glad I’m not involved in any elections or doing anything political. Just sipping my coffee watching the sun rise remembering the days gone by but glad I’m not at all rushed this morning.

Good morning! Happy Election Day 2023. Partly cloudy โ›… and 51 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. โ˜” There is a west-southwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees. I can smell the manure somebody’s spreading this morning ๐Ÿ’ฉ it’s November in Madison County and the field work is soon to be done for the season. ๐Ÿšœ They might have snow as soon as midweek.

Turned out to be a much nicer morning then expected. โ˜• I knew it was going to be a great day when I awoke, saw the clear night skies ๐ŸŒœand the moon. Had a nice hardy breakfast of eggs ๐Ÿณ with lots of vegetables and onions ๐Ÿง… that I got at Aldi’a yesterday in Cazenovia. While yesterday was cold, damp and gray at times it was still a good day with lots of riding ๐Ÿšฒ and making the most of my day off. A lot has changed in this world over the past few years but mornings are still quite beautiful and the coffee is good.

Glad I’m not involved in any elections this year ๐Ÿ—ณ but there were many hard fought ones out of Bill Magees auction house ๐Ÿ—๏ธ ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿบjust down the road. Been half a decade now, I saw the bridge in Cazenovia they renamed after him. It was sad he lost five years ago, but during that general election cycle wasn’t my race. ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐ŸŒพ Truth is winning these rural districts is almost impossible with the democratic party becoming mostly an urban issues party with gun ๐Ÿ”ซ control one of their top priorities. I can understand why people vote the way they do nowadays out in the country. ๐Ÿšœ It’s not just Trump. Both parties have become more extreme but the Republicans have really locked up the rural areas nowadays. I have a feeling that Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Senator John Tester of Montana are going to loose in 2024, especially if the GOP runs a stronger presidential candidate then felon Donald Trump. โณ Time moves on. Democrats though really have locked up the suburbs, especially the older ones and professional class. ๐Ÿ•ด๐Ÿป

Today will have showers likely, mainly between 10am and 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 43 by 5pm. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Breezy, with a west wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1938. 4.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.โ„

I’m not sure how long it will be nice, clouds are already pushing in. ๐ŸŒฅ I don’t want to deal with wet camping gear ๐Ÿ• so I’m slowly but surely taking things down. I don’t have solid plans for today but I think ๐Ÿค” I’ll just go for a walk ๐Ÿšถ around Stoney Pond then head home and get unpacked. ๐Ÿ‘ช Planning to go see my family this afternoon it’s been three 3โƒฃ weeks as I’ve been out of town ๐ŸŒฒ on various trips. Despite yesterday being cold and dreary especially midday it was a great trip.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 30.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-39.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (241ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (249ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:50 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 5:18 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:53 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 44 degrees. Breezy, 20 mph breeze โ›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 32mph. Today will have 10 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I rode the South Trail from outside of Cazenovia to New Woodstock. ๐Ÿšต Nice ride though best on a mountain bike as some parts of the trail are a bit rough with roots and gravel. Pungent with the cow poop and water slurry ๐Ÿฎ ๐Ÿ’ฉ one of the dairies was applying to a nearby field but that’s to be expected this time of year.

Spent a little bit of time riding around New Woodstock yesterday after taking the South Trail from outside of Cazenovia to New Woodstock. ๐Ÿš‚ Neat little village with a Historical Museum just off the rail trail. They like in Cazenovia also have an old Black Diamond Caboose there. Cute little village.

Unfortunately my bike had developed a really annoying squeak on Sunday afternoon โš™๏ธ which I couldn’t figure out and started applying grease everywhere, including getting it all over my hands ๐Ÿ‘ and jeans ๐Ÿ‘– and started to drive me crazy thinking I might have a failing bearing or some problem that could leave me stranded. I thought it was just some stone dust from the Erie Canalway somewhere it shouldn’t be mixed with the grease. Kept stopping, applying grease trying to find the noise. ๐Ÿ”• Finally, I figured it out, it was the left pedal got some stone dust in it and squeaking. A little spray lubricant, knock off WD 40 on the pedal after my south trail ride ๐Ÿšฒ returned my sanity.

Swung by Critz Farms hoping to get apples ๐Ÿ but it looked like only the brewery was open ๐Ÿป and I wasn’t looking for a drink. So I went to Cazenovia Lake Park. Kind of cold gray afternoon but the geeese didn’t seem to mind the cool gray day on Cazenovia Lake. ๐Ÿฆ†

Then I went to the Lorenzo State Historic Site, never been there before. โ›ฒ Been by it a million times though. It was a Monday so all the buildings were shut up and no visitor services or as I needed a bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ but it was still nice to explore the grounds. Swung by the library ๐Ÿ“š in Cazenovia for a pee.

Then I Canastota – Cazenovia Trailway, it was starting to rain and was cold didn’t spend a lot of time, โ˜” wanted get back to camp and start cooking soup plus by then I needed another bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ break. Too much coffee โ˜• in the morning. ๐ŸŒ… Also didn’t feel like carrying my mountain bike over several steps to cross Bingley Road. Visited Aldi’s in Cazenovia ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅฆ, such a delightful shopping experience. ๐Ÿ›’ Low prices, simple selection quick in and out and the cashier lines without them bagging is so quick. โ˜บ

Got back to camp around 4 pm accidentally brushed a tree with one of my tires backing into the campsite โ›บ rushing having to pee but didn’t do any body damage to my truck ๐Ÿ›ป as the tires stick out beyond the body. Sun โ˜€ came out and ghe wind died down. Fried onions and mushrooms, boiled carrots, broccoli, spinach and whole wheat pasta, added some tuna fish ๐Ÿ  for an excellent dinner. Soup really warmed me up ๐Ÿฒ, I just wish I had some homemade bread ๐Ÿž to dip in it but I eat all of that the previous three days. Had a nice fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ didn’t rain until 7:30 pm so it was a good evening at which point I retired to bed ๐Ÿ› in my truck for the evening.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of snow showers between 11pm and 1am, then a chance of flurries after 1am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 14 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1971.

Cool but fairly decent now for Veterans Day Weekend, especially come Saturday. โ˜€ Friday, clouds then clearing, high may reach 43. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, going to be sunny and 39. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. Probably will stay ๐Ÿก next weekend.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 4:42 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 42 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 1973.

One Car

Fifties at night, seventies in the day ๐Ÿ‚

Its been amazing weather even though most of the leaves are done in the High Country but also quite quiet without the crowds. And it doesn’t get dark until around seven here but the mornings are quite dark too. But I’m enjoying it.

Good morning! No idea on the day lol, I’m on vacation. Those camel ๐Ÿซ milkmen with their fast letdown can do their thing without me commenting. ๐Ÿ˜‚ Partly cloudy and 56 degrees in Canaan Heights, WV. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. No need for the propane heater either this morning or even last night.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 70 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 5pm. South wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 2005.โ„

Going to be another absolutely beautiful day in West Virginia today. โ˜€ Riding my bike about 7 miles along the Canaan Loop Road today to the Table Rock trail, ๐Ÿšฒ which is a mile further to a scenic rock ledge high above the Red Run and across from Mozart Mountain with the Otter Creek wilderness in the distance. Photos ๐Ÿ“ธ at some point but probably not today, see the next paragraph lol. I could drive the road but it’s narrow and steep and probably rough – and I figure I would likely see far more on the bicycle where I can stop ๐Ÿ›‘ wherever without worries of leaving my truck parked on a blind curve. Alternating driving and bicycling slash hiking from camp every other day. ๐Ÿšถ

I wouldn’t mind getting back to camp โ›บ fairly early mid afternoon and laying back in the hammock and reading ๐Ÿ“– for a while. Just some quiet ๐Ÿคซ time in the wilderness. There is so little traffic on the road and I need some down time on my vacation. Then maybe around dusk, ๐ŸŒ† like after dinner, I’ll ride up to the top of Canaan Heights and watch the sun set as I ride back to camp.

I haven’t done so good uploading photos ๐Ÿ“ธ to the blog this week as often my cell service is weak and it requires a better signal ๐Ÿ“ถ then on Facebook. I have posted a lot more on Facebook and will post more when I get back home. Same thing with blog updates. I’ve been busy and cell service is so patchy. I was surprised that even in the village of Davis I have only one or two bars off service and it’s not reliable for uploads. ๐Ÿ‘†

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:40 pm with sun having an altitude of 35.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-35.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:50 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (248ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (254ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 6:57 pm, which is one minute and 27 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (115ยฐ) at an altitude of 19ยฐ from the horizon, 227,069 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:01 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over today.

Yesterday rode all around Blackwater State Park, the Blackwater River single track from WV 32 to the park, looped back through the village and did the part of Camp 70 Road not in the Little Canaan WMA. ๐Ÿšฒ While Camp 70 Road is closed to bikes for the season, due to hunting season. Lots of great views l my other camera. Colors are faded but the views from the park ๐Ÿž and Lindy Point was great. ๐Ÿ“ธ Sat down at the river front park, and then got a few supplies and head back to camp โ›บ.

The only grocery shopping options within 35 miles of Davis is Shop and Save Express and Dollar General ๐Ÿช – that is roads with many hairpin turns, no matter which direction you go – Keyser WV, Oakland MD and Elkins WV are the nearest towns with a full size supermarket each about equidistant from Davis. Surprisingly though Shop and Save Express may be small by modern standards ๐Ÿ›’ (1/3rd size of the Greenville Tops) but it’s clean, modern, decent selection with lots of produce and reasonable prices. In general, groceries are a fair bit cheaper in West Virginia then the same in New York. Certainly much better than what you would find in the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿฎ Got the milk, ice, paper towels and coffee โ˜• I needed so so I wouldn’t run out before the trip is done.

Last night was a beautiful moon lit evening. ๐ŸŒƒ Rode about 7 miles round trip on gravel then back another 1/2 miles on the Allegheny Trail to one of the sods, ๐Ÿšฒ turned off the light and looked at the stars for a while. โœจ It was a great evening, stayed up to half past ten ๐Ÿ”Ÿ which is super late for me but the mornings are super dark in West Virginia.

When I got back I fried up pumpkin – oatmeal biscuits with lots of pumpkin spice and ginger ๐ŸŽƒ which was a nice treat to end the day. ๐Ÿช Laid back for a while in the hammock before retiring to sleep for the night.

Tonight will be mostly clesr ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 46 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1952.

In 1962, in the Cuban Missile Crisis, Adlai Stevenson shows photos at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council proving that Soviet missiles are installed in Cuba. ๐Ÿš€ Sounds like scary times.

I tell you all day yesterday with all that garlic and onion rice ๐Ÿ’ฉ I was blowing up bathrooms left and right. I kind of overdid the spices on that one but it tasted so good when I was tired and hungry ๐Ÿ˜‹ last night after drinking ๐Ÿป a beer. Oh well I’m on vacation. I sought out porta potties rather than inside toilets ๐Ÿšป for just that reason. It was fine and now I’m over it.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, rain showers in the morning then becoming sunnier sunny, with a high near 69. Maximum dew point of 62 at 11am. Sunday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 60%. But by then I’ll be back in Penna on my way back home. Typical average high for the weekend is 57 degrees.

I am thinking Asaph Run campground on Saturday night โ›บ and then riding as much of the Pine Creek Rail Trail ๐Ÿšต I can before I have to leave, probably by around two. Which will become three. 3โƒฃ But the thing is I will be tired ๐Ÿ˜ด by then and with the early sunset and deer ๐ŸฆŒ in rut I don’t want to drive too much in the pitch black. I have clothes set out for work on Monday so I should be good on that front. Of course it depends on how wet Sunday turns out to be. โ˜” I’m fine with driving in the rain but biking in the rain is less fun. Plus driving in the rain ๐Ÿ›ป after dark is something I would like to avoid.

Looking ahead, next Wednesday is Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. Not many more days of riding the bike ๐Ÿšฒ home from work. ๐Ÿข On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny skies, and quite warm, with mist in the morning and temperatures between 69 and 54 degrees. Albany hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

Heldebergs

Back to work for me on the hottest day of autumn ๐Ÿ–

It’s just climate change is such a cruel joke as it’s going to be so cold and rainy come the Columbus Day Weekend. I can’t believe another shitty weekend is ahead.

Good morning! Fog ๐ŸŒซ and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. Makes sense. I swear I woke up and was hot in the middle of the night.

Cream of wheat with warmed shredded apples ๐Ÿ, cinnamon, ginger, Greek yogurt and chia seeds for breakfast this morning. Out for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ and then I’ll shower ๐Ÿšฟ and ride to work. ๐Ÿšฒ Also made up some rice and lentils for lunch the rest of the week.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 83 degrees at 2pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 12pm. Yeah that’s pretty August like with the humidity. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 60 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1891. 6.5 inches of snow fell back in 1987.โ„

Yesterday was a nice day and so will today. ๐Ÿข But alas it’s back to the office today. Yesterday I Rode 35 miles along the Albany – Hudson Electric Trail today from the hamlet of Rossman (South of Stuyvesant Falls) to Nassau including Kinderhook, Valatie, North Chatham. ๐Ÿšฒ Also visited Martin Van Buren Historical Site, the only bad part of that was riding along NY 9H which is very busy ๐Ÿš˜ and narrow in parts, and that very tangy smell of the slurry ๐Ÿฎ they’re spreading on the fields now that high moisture corn is mostly done, ๐ŸŒฝthough some are still chopping. Also visited the Lewis Sywer Preserve on the Hudson River and NY 9J which was pretty nice. ๐Ÿฆ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:45 pm with sun having an altitude of 43.1° from the due south horizon (-27.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:56 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (259°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (265°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:34 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:00 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:34 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 78 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 29th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 6pm. South wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1965.

Cold and wet for the Columbus Day Weekend. โ˜” Saturday, showers before 8am, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm between 8am and 2pm, then showers after 2pm. High near 67. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 10am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny but breezy, with a high near 56. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Columbus Day mostly cloudy and breezy, maybe 55 degrees. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees.

I was hoping to get out of town for the long weekend ๐Ÿ‚to enjoy the colors of autumn but with the increasingly wet weather and cold with wind I’m not sure it’s going to happen. Heck of it is the cold rain and wind will do a number on the leaves. Wanted to see some New York color before I went to Pennsylvania and ultimately West Virginia next week. I heard they may get snow in the high country of West Virigina this weekend, though not expected to last. But for this weekend, mMaybe I’ll do a one or two night overnight close to home if Saturday isn’t that wet. ๐Ÿก.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 69 and 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950. It’s an El Niño year, we could break it again this year.
