Sunny morning for the shopping day 🌞 🛒

Still a cold morning, but that sun puts you in a good mood. Off to get groceries and get going on my day. Still a fair amount of snow in the hilltowns, so I’ll have to consider that if I want to go out hiking later on.

Good morning! Today 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 . Partly cloudy and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a north breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. ☃️

Started the morning with pancakes 🥞, you know the usual conventional type I make with oatmeal, carrots and bananas pulverized for sweetness, some milk and egg and a bit of whole-wheat flower for binder. Good stuff in my perspective, especially once topped with lots of cherries and blueberries and real maple syrup. 🍁 Probably good for a sugar high too, but I figure the carrots and oatmeal will provide some fiber and the egg some fats to slow down the absorption and hopefully not damage my pancreas too much.  🥕 Remember while all the kids were eating candy 🍬 over the holiday weekend, I was staying away from all that crap.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 52 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 1st. North wind 7 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2010. 3.2 inches of snow fell back in 1896.❄ Should be warm enough to at least have the windows open, air things out a bit and get the humidity down. I re-installed the smoke detector as I think it will work better now that my apartment isn’t so humid and smokey from cooking.

Shopping is the top of the agenda this morning. 🐔 Truth is my pantry isn’t in terrible shape, but I want to shop today so I can avoid going later in the week. The grocery store is usually best for stock early on a Sunday morning, and then I’m done and can leave Big Red parked all morning. I should also re-fill my propane tank  🏮 lest I decide to head out of town for the weekend. Asparagus 🌵 is on my list now that we are in spring, plus I’m thinking maybe make red lentil soup for lunch today with a bunch more of those carrots, maybe mixed with some cottage cheese and topped with nutritional yeast. Sounds yummie. 😋

Then maybe I’ll head out for a bike ride for a while. 🚲️ Nothing too major, maybe just a quick ride out to Five Rivers or Voorheesville. Honestly, it’s kind of a chilly not very nice day. That wind makes it cold, and there just isn’t a lot of warmth in the sun this morning. I was thinking about going to Partridge Run and crusing the backroads, looking for land, but I don’t want to hike in the snow. Next weekend I might camp out that way though. That said despite the cold wind, 🌬️  it does make things a lot more cheery having some sun. 😀 Tomorrow looks much nicer for going back to work, on my bicycle, and then watching the eclipse in the afternoon.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54.4° from the due south horizon (-16.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:51 pm with the sun in the west (274°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (281°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:29 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 7:57 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:32 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday the bike ride didn’t happen, 📚️ but I did get through reading an e-book and a physical book, one about the contracting process of building a house and the other about Tiny Houses. I am not that interest in a tiny house, but I want to learn as much as possible about the process of building a house and working with construction materials, plus I’m still thinking small but not tiny cabin style of house 🛖 on lots of land. But will it happen this year? Maybe not. Okay, probably not. But I am learning a lot, and maybe if I do find a property that catches my eye and heart 🥰 and I find a way to make peace  ✌️ with the way things are in New York, I’ll be good.

Landlord was working on the unit next to mine,  🏘️ which I’m glad to see he’s improving before he re-rents it as it means I should be good in my current unit for another year, a bit at a somewhat higher rent. My apartment is still a dump, though I don’t blame myself that much for it at this point, but it’s not in anyone’s interest to improve my unit while I’m still here. I stay here because it’s cheap, not because it’s my only option. Been learning what it would take to improve my apartment, and while I won’t be doing it, I don’t feel guilty for things wearing out and being of need of repair over the past 15 years. I could have been more insistent on immediate repairs,  👨‍🔧 but honestly I don’t care that much about a building that ain’t mind and is mostly a bed between days at work and trips. At least I don’t think I’m in immediate risk of eviction. Worse comes to worse, I move  🚚 and end up paying more in rent. 💸

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 30 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 29th. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 2018.

I am watching the forecast for tomorrow 🌘 and it doesn’t look that bad for the eclipse. Sucks that I have to work, but I got eclipse glasses 🕶️ for the whole team to enjoy watching the eclipse from the work parking lot most likely. Or maybe I’ll ride down to the Corning Preserve, though honestly I think the best view of the eclipse will be from the second floor of my building with the south side windows overlooking the Interstate 90 where the elevator is located.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Cinco de Mayo 🤠 when the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm with dusk at 8:31 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 64 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. I’m looking forward to do days like that. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.

Route 10 Farm

Tuesday, Tuesday. 🌄

Rise and grind on this second day of the week. Started my morning with Johnny cakes with spinach and broccoli and old bay seasoning, I guess to celebrate the collapse of the Baltimore bridge, or I wasn’t feeling like pancakes despite having some cherries and bananas rolled in oats as a side.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly sunny and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ☀️A cold start to the morning. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ Melting quickly though, by tomorrow’s rain it will be gone at least locally. ️Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. 🌡️

I guess I’ll be riding in this morning. 🚲 I’m going to try to do the rail trail, it’s better than Corning’s Hill and the rough as duck 🦆 South Pearl Street. Depending on how much snow is left on the bike path I’ll try to ride home too, but last night I ended up catching the express bus 🚍 from the old train station downtown. ⚙ Adjusted the gears on my bike, went for an evening walk and did some reading 📖 last night. Got another e- audio book from the Libby app to listen to on my ride to work. 🔊 Waiting for the next, part of Power Broker to be available, in the meantime I’m listening to Ralph Naders new book on CEOs who did the right thing.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 2021. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 1899.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.8° from the due south horizon (-21° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:38 pm with the sun in the west (268°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (274°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:15 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:43 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:17 pm. At sunset, look for potential rain showers 🌧 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 33 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of sprinkles before 8pm, then a chance of showers after 10pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 37 degrees at 2am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. Southeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 27 degrees. The record low of 78 occurred back in 1998.

It looks like now the heat can be off until October or November ♨️ though maybe not quite warm enough for the windows open. I’m also not ready to put away the electric blanket but I’m using it less and less these days.

Easter Weekend still looks outstanding. 🐰 Good Friday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Easter, mostly sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. A little bit below normal. But I’m looking forward to getting out of town. 🌲

There are 2 weeks until 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 55 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.

Snow Melt Coming Down the Mountain

To ride or not to ride to work today 🚴‍♀️ 🏔️

I think I already know the answer to that question, as much as I might not love the idea of riding South Pearl Street with the rough pavement, as I am sure there is still too much snow on the rail trail. Got to watch out for the black ice but I assume the bike trail and alike will be plowed in the city, just not down through the gorge. At any rate, Corning Hill is kind of a blast on the bike.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Sunny and 29 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Calm wind. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️ Alas that’s the only thing giving me pause, as I doubt I can do the rail trail. But by evening the rail trail might be passable, or certainly by tomorrow. Wednesday might rain, and Thursday I might drive in if I plan to head to the Adirondacks after work, assuming I get Good Friday off. ✝️

So it’s the week leading up to Easter Weekend. 🐇 I am still hoping to have Good Friday off. That said, Thursday looks a bit wet 🌦️ so maybe I won’t head north until early on Good Friday. I am determined to get bacon 🥓 at For the Love of Bacon, as while it’s not something I’d eat regularly it’s such a wonderful treat. 🐖 And your supporting local agriculture while getting a product made out of simple ingredients. I’m not a bacon and eggs each morning kind of person — but a little bit of bacon and bacon grease as a treat spread over a few weeks or months is wonderful. Lard is kind of a wonderful thing. 🫃  I should bring a snow shovel and salt though if heading up north, as there is a chance I’ll need it. But at least fire danger should be relatively low  🔥 for my mostly DEC compliant 3-foot campfire. I should bring a ruler 📏 to measure it, and not burn it, lol. 😸 I just don’t like when people burn pallets and leave nails out for people to run over with their 35-inch tires. 🛞 Plastic, I don’t care as long as I don’t have to smell it and it fully burns up or is packed out. 👃

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 46 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 19th. Light and variable wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 74 was set in 1910. 1.9 inches of snow fell back in 1960.❄

Yesterday I hiked Bennett Hill 🚶‍♂️ after the ice storm.  🔌 The power was back on by the time I got back from my folks house, I’m glad about that as otherwise it would have been a very cold and dark night. Didn’t help that I had left the heat at 48 degrees the night before, so things really dropped after the heat quit working at 1 AM the previous night. I was a bit worried about pipes freezing, though that has yet to happen even in the coldest weather, though I do remember them being a bit frozen after the 2009 Ice Storm when I lost power for three days. 🌞 And despite all the sunshine, it still was dark in my bathroom without windows, though what I ended up doing was drawing the blinds and leaving the bathroom door. Still I was super cranky about losing power, again for the second time in like two weeks.

Then I went out to my parents house for Sunday dinner of riggies 🍝, which is far more white pasta then I normally eat but it’s nice to have them as a treat while my family is still around. 👪️ I talk about how close I am to early retirement in 13 years, 10 months and 4 days, and for people who are older that seems like a lifetime — at least a remaining lifetime. But I do agree I really should be spending a least some of that time exploring America. If I want to move out (mid) west, I should explore it first.  🛻 If it means boarding a plane ✈️ and renting a car 🤑 and spending some money, then so be it. Then later in the evening, I went for an evening walk.  🚲️ Never got test my adjustments to the bicycle gears  ⚙️ over the weekend, but I’m sure it will be good enough and I can tweak tonight. Probably won’t be riding home but will catch the bus home due to snow/ice remaining on the bike trail.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.4° from the due south horizon (-21.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:37 pm with the sun in the west (267°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (274°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:14 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:42 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:16 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 41 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 28 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over yesterday.

This evening after I get home I’ll probably have a quick dinner of sweet potato  🥔 and some fried veggies, 🧅 and then go for evening walk before doing some reading 📚️ using that Libby app on my phone. I like E-Books whenever they’re available as it avoids a trip to the library, plus I don’t have to worry about getting the books wet and dirty, and I can bring them under the covers in my bed, which is good with the heated blanket, as especially once we get past today. I plan to read e-books exclusively when I head out of town this weekend — I’ll have to make sure the ones I have are downloaded to my phone.📱 Unfortunately my phone is starting to fall apart, so I may have to think about replacing it soon.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 26 degrees at 4am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 17th. East wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2023, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1885.

Spoke to my neighbor about the garbage pile  🗑️ last week and he still hasn’t done anything to address it. He said he was holding it to take to his parent’s dumpster but had forgotten about it. I just don’t like how animals have gotten into it and I’m finding litter now. I wouldn’t care if he had secure garbage cans.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 The only real question in my mind will I get off Good Friday. And can I leave early on Thursday? For Good Friday Eve, a chance of showers before 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Chance of precipitation is 40%. For Good Friday, partly sunny, with a high near 48. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 49. Easter, partly sunny, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees. That sounds like a winner, though it only can slide downhill from here. Not as warm in Adirondacks, but I’ll take that weather for late March.

As previously noted, next Monday is April Fools Day 🤡 when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm. On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 74 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Blackhead from Acra Point

Just kind of a wet, damp miserable day 🌧️

A good day for staying home, doing some reading and some cleaning. Maybe some thinking and writing about where I am currently, now that’s I’ve put my house and land search on ice, I’d say suspended it but I’m still going to keep learning, will keep my eye on Landwatch and Zillow and keep my options but I think my preferred option is now focused on early retirement.

Good afternoon! Started out as snow, turned to rain, and now looks like it’s more freezing rain and 32 degrees here in Delmar. 🌧️There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

I honestly thought it was just going to be a rain event locally. 🌨️ I was wrong. It’s really much more of a mixed bag, a lot of slop locally but now I’m watching the trees ice up. They’re getting a fair bit of snow up north, but I think with the warmer temperatures next week, maybe some will be left up north prior to camping but it won’t be a major hindrance as most should melt this weekend. 🏕️ I confirmed that For the Love of Bacon is going to be open on Good Friday, so I can get bacon 🥓 prior to camping. Yum. 🐖 I won’t buy store bought bacon but as an occasional treat, farm bacon is great.

This afternoon will rain or freezing rain before 3pm, then rain and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then rain, snow, and sleet after 4pm. High of 35 degrees at 2pm. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 13th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime ice accumulation of 0.3 to 0.5 of an inch possible. Total daytime snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 1938. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2020.❄

Thursday knocked my derailleur badly out of alignment fighting the wind heading home, didn’t discover until Friday commute. 🚲 Couldn’t even get it into high. Ended up driving in on Friday but it’s fine as I brought in a better desk lamp and one of my re-potted plants. Had a root rot issue or maybe over fertilization. 🥀 Wasn’t a difficult adjustment, took five minutes with a hex key but I didn’t have time on Friday to adjust. When the rain stops I’ll take for a test ride to verify. I ended up getting an inexpensive stick lamp for my desk at work 🛋️ because the lamp shade on the old lamp I found in the closet was falling apart. Lamp shades were close to same price, plus that old lamp I found in closet kind of was on it’s last legs. This new lamp is super bright with the 200-watt LED bulb, and the not aged-plastic on the lamp shade.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 48.6° from the due south horizon (-22.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:35 pm with the sun in the west (266°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (273°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:12 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:39 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Full 🌝 Moon in the east (100°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 252,272 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:13 pm. At sunset, look for snow and freezing rain 🌨 and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

At one point I had more ambitious plans for today, 🧹 but I really should spend time cleaning in my apartment, especially the bathroom. And I want to do some reading, this time not about real estate, building a house or land. 🏠️ It was fine when I was doing it, but it became a bit overwhelming to say the least. I’m not going to stop learning, but it’s not going to be primary focus now that I’ve moved that goal into my retirement years when I can have lots of land and in live in a state that shares my values. 🧭 I wanted to make New York work, but I just don’t see the state’s values as being consistent with my own.

This afternoon I am thinking if the library opens I’ll go down there for a while to get on the internet, 🖥️ and maybe drop off my Early Voting Ballot to the Early Voting site. Totally voted for Dean Phillips, as I think we need new blood in government, 🫀 even if the 79-year old Joe Biden has nomination locked up. If I don’t get it done today, 🗳️ I can do that tomorrow when I run to the grocery store for my weekly shop already — can you believe tomorrow is already Sunday? 🛒I am thinking Thursday I may take half a day off from work and head up to Adirondacks before rush hour 🚗 , although if the weather is bad, I think I’d be better off to go up early on Good Friday, maybe doing a hike in the morning. 🏕️

Tonight will snow, mainly before 8pm. 🌨 Low of 21 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 29th. Northwest wind around 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2023, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1875.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Arbor Day 🌳 when the sun will be setting at 7:52 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy, patches of fog and temperatures between 62 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Pretty morning today

Not the nicest Hump Day around ever to kick off spring 🌧️

March rain and snow showers bring mud and a lower fire risk and hopefully some green though it will need to warm up a bit. But I’m sure 80 degree days aren’t far off. I am just hoping for nice weather come Easter weekend.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Rain and snow showers around and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 8 pm. ☃️

While I concede that I probably will get wet, I am going to ride my bike to work today. 🚲 I am nuts 🤪 but hardly that’s a secret – I figure I’m kind of the Charlie Luce of Data Services. You know the former CEO of ConEd who used to ride his bicycle to work and to construction 🚧 sites to view projects in the 1960s. I think the bigger danger is getting soaked at five o’clock 💦 though if it happens I’ll throw my bike on the bus 🚍 and come home and get changed. I like the exercise and saving the bus fare. 🎫

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 11am, then a chance of rain showers after noon. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. Typical for today. South wind 8 to 10 mph becoming west in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 2012. 7.0 inches of snow fell back in 1944.❄

Last night I got home and was somewhat chilled through from the evening bike ride. 🌬️ It was windy to say the least. Microwaved a sweet potato, chopped it up and fried it with onions and corn. 🍳 Not a half bad dinner, I was fully engulfed in the Power Broker audio book. 🎧️ You know the classic one by Robert Caro on Robert Moses. The politics are intensely fascinating. 🏗️ I was going to read and watch some videos about building green homes, but somehow I was cold so I retired to under my electric blanket and was asleep shortly after 7 PM. I had planned to get up really early — maybe at 4 AM to do more reading, 📚️ but somehow I didn’t get up until some point between 5:30 and 5:45 AM which is late for me. I guess I needed a bit of extra sleep last night. 🛏️

Probably the reason why my sleep is so fucked up 💤 is because I drink like 2-3 large cups of coffee in the morning,  ☕️ then I come into the office in and drink two more cups of iced black coffee.  🧊 It keeps me awake, but as my doctor noted last year, it’s kind of excessive to say the least. I should drink more water  in the morning, and try to be more in moderation so I’m not pissing all of the time. 🥛 But also by the time I get home I’m just warn out after all those hours of studying data records. Plus I’m spending so much time thinking what my future home would look like, and all the steps to implement it. But what I need the most is a good night in the wilderness with a big fire. 🏕️ 🔥 I’m really hoping next week.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.5° from the due south horizon (-23.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:31 pm with the sun in the west (265°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (271°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:08 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:36 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the east-southeast (111°) at an altitude of 51° from the horizon, 249,398 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:09 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and snow 🌨 and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 9pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after 5am. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear 🌧, with a low of 22 degrees at 4am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 4th. West wind around 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -01 occurred back in 1956.

This weekend is a mixed bag but generally Saturday is wet and Sunday is sunny but cold again. 🌦️ Saturday, snow, possibly mixed with rain, becoming all rain after 8am. High near 42. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 42. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.

I am potentially thinking about driving down to Catskill Mountain Cabins in Kingston to learn more 🛖 though I almost want to do more research first as I know as soon as a salesperson gets my phone and email 📱 📧 I will be harassed to buy now. And I’m not sure if that option is right for me. Already since I’ve mentioned to people that I’m interested in building a small solar powered home, I get people sending me pictures of tiny homes and off grid cabins in the wilderness – both which aren’t practical or realistic options for the life I want to live. I want to have good information in my hands 👐 and do what’s right for me before buying 💰 but also I don’t want to delay forever.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 8 PM Dusk 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 7:33 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 67 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

 Harvey Mountain

Final Days of Winter 🌨️

Tomorrow officially starts spring on the calendar, but as usually is the case in New York State that doesn’t mean tulips and warm weather is right around the corner — though with El Nino and climate change in control I’m not convinced in a few days it won’t get real warm quickly. Remember, the record books are littered with 80 degrees over the years throughout March. No ninety degree days so far, but the climate is warming.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Mostly sunny 🌞 and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. 🍃.

Up and going a little after 5 AM ☕️ after running to Stewart’s to get more of the moo juice for my coffee. 🐄 Carrot pancakes this morning 🥕🥞 with fresh maple syrup and blueberries that were pretty damn good. It was a beautiful morning when I went out to Stewart’s, and now I’m sitting at my desk here in my apartment looking out the window. As usual, I am going to ride to work today. A bit cool of a day, but so be it. I will wear gloves and a winter jacket if necessary. 🚴‍♂️

Today will have increasing clouds ☁, with a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 17th. West wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 69 was set in 2012. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1977.❄

I’m hoping to talk to my neighbor about the growing pile of garbage bags 🗑️ next to his apartment. I didn’t say anything last week, as I assumed on Saturday he’d be making a trip to the transfer station. ♻️ I assume he doesn’t give a rats ass  🐀 about the landlord at this point because he’s moving out with the rent hike coming in search of greener pastures, but I don’t want rats in my apartment nor do I want the fire risk  🔥 that piles of garbage bring. The new month-to-month agreement is pretty clear that not allowed — I had to ask for special permission to have my kayak outdoors. 🚣 If he doesn’t clean it up soon, I’m going to email the new landlord, and if he doesn’t take action, I’ll call the town. 🏛️

It’s obnoxious to deal with, because I normally wouldn’t care, especially if the garbage was in cans, 🛢️ as sometimes it’s a while before I get it burnt up, taken to my parents trash pickup, or hauled to the transfer station, but I don’t leave it sitting out where animals can get to it. 🐿️ Already I’ve seen some garbage strewn around. I need to get out of this dumpy apartment before it burns or I get evicted in pursuit of redevelopment of the land — but I want to buy myself whatever time I can, especially if I want to build my dream solar homestead. ⏳️🏠️ That said, I won’t complain too much, as I’m kind of loud with my food processor and smoke alarm — to say nothing of cussing out the world when drop a pot on my foot, dirty and  generally obnoxious too. 🤬 Trust me I can be vulgar at times, sometimes even a bit downright racist.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 46.7° from the due south horizon (-24.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:29 pm with the sun in the west (264°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (270°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:06 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:33 pm, which is one minute and 10 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the southeast (136°) at an altitude of 70° from the horizon, 244,770 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:07 pm. At sunset, look out for snow showers 🌨 and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph with gusts up to 21mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 55 seconds over today.

I am coming to realize how abusive Rosa the substitute dental hygienist was on Friday.  🦷I am not going to pay somebody to get abused — even if my insurance covered the visit. I appreciate constructive criticism 🪥 and I’m thinking about getting an electric toothbrush for better cleaning, but Rosa was downright abusive. I get she had her new toy that showed how bad my teeth were in high-resolution colored pictures, but I did not deserve to be berated for a half hour about how bad my oral care is despite my attempts to each healthy 🍎 and floss regularly. 😁 She scheduled with me for a follow up visit, but I am the customer so I have every right to cancel that appointment 🛑 and find a hygienist who is professional.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 3am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -10 occurred back in 1967.

More reading and studying about building a house tonight. 🏠️ The usual of checking Zillow and Landwatch for new parcels and houses to come on them market, expanding my circle out a bit 🛞 looking at different acreage and locations to determine what would be the best place to live. I mean if I see a small house on acreage, I would be willing to consider it, it as it’s greener to reuse an existing structure and not develop new land, but the flip side is such a property would be likely very poorly insulated and grid-tied. 🏚️Plus if at all possible, I want to avoid vinyl siding, which I despise to no end.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Maybe it’s too early to really determine for sure. Saturday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. I have some other places I want to check out this weekend, plus find time for some hiking and fun, as I have to keep living while building my dream homestead. 🏃‍♂️ Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees. 🌻 There is hope for spring. The following weekend — Thursday evening through Easter Sunday I’m hoping to camp in the Adirondacks unless there is a shit ton of snow or rain is promised all weekend.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until April Fools Day 🤡 when the sun will be setting at 7:23 pm with dusk at 7:50 pm. On that day in 2023, we had rain and temperatures between 74 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Waiting on the sun to ride after yesterday’s snow 🌅 🚲

Figured if it’s a dress-up day for work, I won’t be able to ride to work or want to take the stairs up to my office. So it best to get out riding early. It looks like the main roads will just be wet, not super icy though I might run into some snow on side-streets, like Meads Road and Orchard Street. I don’t expect it will be that bad of a ride this morning, and it’s not super cold. But first the sun needs to rise a bit more. I have lights on my bike but I don’t want to ride in the pitch black, especially past the street lights on NY 32 and Meads Road.

Good morning! Happy Monday on this Bubble Bath Day. 🛀 Back to work today, no time for bubble baths. 🧼Partly cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar. ⛅ There is a northwest breeze at 14 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 11. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am. 🌡️ Probably want a bubble bath by the time I get home from the ride this morning. And more oil on the bike chain.

This morning I made cornmeal paddies with an egg, milk, red onions, garlic, spinach, red pepper and salt. 🍔 I think with the garlic, salt and red pepper I might next time dial back it back a bit, as they were a bit more punchy then I’d like in the morning, but they were good. The spinach helped boost the fiber content plus topping them with greek yogurt and the egg in them really boost the protein content. I was pretty happy with how they came out, and will make them again though I still think I’d want to tone them back a bit. Just too spicy for morning food. Is corn as healthy as oats or whole-wheat? Probably not, but it has the different sweeter and oiler taste. Don’t need to add any oil to the paddies for sure, and they were good.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 37 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph. Between the warm weather, breeze and sun I don’t expect the snow to stick around. But we can really stick a fork in it come Wednesday with the rain expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 2008. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1923.❄

Yesterday, I decided to make up some chicken soup 🍲 for dinner, which was followed by pea soup and a small bowl of cornmeal porridge. Interested in finding new ways to use cornmeal. 🍊 Shredded a full orange in the food processor, to get all the flavor, taste and fiber of both the inside and outside of an orange. 🍞 Didn’t make up any bread last night, I was kind of tired, but I probably will tonight when I get home.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.1° from the due south horizon (-45.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:54 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:39 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 5:10 pm, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:46 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌃 and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 14 seconds over today.

I’ll be the first to admit yesterday wasn’t the most productive day ever. 🛌 Just a lot of reading, and watching Youtube and Udemy videos to learn more about machine learning and other topics. I probably should have gone out for a walk yesterday, 🚶 but it was cold out 🧟 and I wasn’t super interested in heading out. I kind of want to just get through winter at this point.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🏙, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 1st. Light and variable wind. Should be a nice night for the evening. In 2023, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1968.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, rain. High near 45. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 32. Breezy. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Things could evolve but Saturday isn’t looking great for heading out of town but Sunday into King’s Day might be good. I kind of would like to get at least one night in the woods, preferrably two if I decide to head up to the Adirondacks or Central NY. Rensselearville isn’t so bad for just one night, but it still requires quite a bit of packing.

Next Monday is Martin Luther King Day 🖤 when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:17 pm. We are picking up quite a bit of time in the evening now, even if when I move to the Enterprise Drive office in the suburbs, there will be enough light in evening to ride back and catch the express bus home. The question now is just cold and snow. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 33 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1995.
