It’s not a half bad morning today πŸŒ…

Moving forward on this Thursday morning, the weekend is moving closer. Doesn’t look like a wash out this weekend locally but kind of gray again. The same can’t be said though about the High Country of West Virginia unfortunately. But that’s nothing I can change no matter how much I refresh the web page for the Tucker County forecast.

Good morning! Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. β›… Calm wind.

Eggs, onions, veggies and probably too much spices 🍳 for breakfast this morning. Didn’t get up real early today, quarter to five as by the time I got unpacked from my trip to Wally World and lights out πŸ› it was well after nine. Plus no big meals 🍴 cooking this morning, did most of my cooking yesterday. β˜• When I get home I’ll have that second cup of coffee with cinnamon and ginger, maybe a few blueberries 🫐, shower 🚿 and ride to work. 🚲 Bike rides so much smoother and better since I got that waterproof βš™ chain oil. The dry chain oil worked okay but not for long.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 64 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 11th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 10am. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1954. There was a dusting of snow in 1904.❄

Should be a great day for a bike ride into the office. 🚲 Third day in the row, not too bad, though yesterday was kind of cloudy. I definitely used both the front and rear lights yesterday for safety, with the shadows and clouds hanging over low over everything. It’s nice being able to plug things in and things quickly charge with the USB charger overnight. I also will enjoy that sunlight soaking through the window as I work on the stack of cap grants on my desk. πŸ“ƒ Then this afternoon it’s off to the dungeon for a while for some darkness. Not going to be the same in the break-room 🍬 since I’ve gotten into the healthy eating thing.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:43 pm with sun having an altitude of 40.1° from the due south horizon (-30.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:42 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (261°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:20 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 6:47 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:21 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 59 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over today.

Yesterday I went Walmart and got socks, boxers, and supplies. πŸ›’ They didn’t have gray socks so I ended up deciding on black socks 🧦 which are fine as I didn’t want easily stained white socks. Nice having boxers that fit well now that I’m so much slimmer and aren’t totally worn out. I’ve actually been tossing a lot of old boxers and socks in the rag pile lately to take to the recycling dumpster, as many have gotten holes or are otherwise worn through. Got Keifer milk (fermented milk) as something new to try, it’s like yogurt but thinner like milk and supposedly is really good for the gut with all kinds of healthy live bacteria unlike most yogurt where the bacteria is killed before consumption.

Tonight will be partly cloudy πŸŒ†, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 15th. Northwest wind 6 to 8 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1981.

Mice have been bad this year 🐭 in my apartment since it’s gotten cool, so I picked up some additional sticky and traditional spring mouse traps. Usually once I catch enough of them they thin out for the winter. I think they probably like all the bread crumbs and other crumbs with all the fresh cooking I do these days. 🍞 I don’t mind that much except when they chew holes in the walls, and crap all over my griddle and spread disease, but they’re also annoying when once scurries off. My experience is though overtime with the traps, they’ll disappear. I could also get out the bucket trap which is often quite effective for a while until it no longer is once they figure it out or get enough thinned out.

Not as wet for the Albany area this weekend, as the low center and rain has moved south. πŸŒ§ Instead of us getting it, it will be West Virginia, where I was planning on going this weekend, lol. Saturday, a chance of rain, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. Still hardly a banner weekend. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

I might end up heading up to the Albany Pine Bush πŸ¦‹ to ride trail with Blackie and to the Salvation Army to look at some more clothes, stop by Farmer’s Indian Marker and Aldis for more spices and groceries, and maybe explore the Italian or Chinese markets further down center. πŸ‘©‍πŸ’Ό At this point especially I should see if I can get some dress shirts at Salvation Army for work, or other “nice” stuff to wear in the winter that fits me well. At least it’s not going to be as wet as originally predicted. 🌧

Further out, next Thursday is Average High is 60 πŸ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:08 pm with dusk at 6:36 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 53 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 60 degrees. We hit a record high of 79 back in 1963.

Watching the sun rise on this Columbus Day πŸŒ„

Up bright and early as often is the case in the morning. Coffee and eggs just enjoying the quiet over the land as the sun rises. In the distance is the roar of an ATV as I sit warming my hands over the propane heater.

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day. β›΅πŸ‚Mostly clear and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ.

Five o’clock I rose as always πŸ› and it was dark in the woods. I don’t mind, I like an early start and a good breakfast. 🍳 Annoyed I left the sweet corn 🌽 and onions πŸ§… home but I had plenty of other good things to use in my eggs – I packed the jalapeΓ±o I had plus canned πŸ₯« olives and chopped tomatoes. Kind of getting past the farm fresh tomato πŸ… time of year.

Columbus Day will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 19th. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 83 was set in 1949. There was a dusting of snow in 2000.❄

Cold this morning with the breeze 🌬️ but should get nicer as the day progreses. Going to ride Blackie 🚡 around Rennselearville State Forest on some roads and trails, have lunch 🍲 and then head over to Partridge Run WMA for biking along the Switzkill and other gravel rides for the balance of the day. Hopefully it will warm up. Yesterday was kind of cool and wet at times, I retired to bed at nine o’clock as it started to rain as I sat by the fire πŸ”₯. At least my only time limitation today is getting home by dusk.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:43 pm with sun having an altitude of 41.2Β° from the due south horizon (-29.6Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:47 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (256Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (262Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:25 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 6:51 pm, which is one minute and 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:26 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a southwest breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over today.

Today is the big blog renewal day. πŸ“„ I’m going to bite the bullet and get it done. I like blogging and telling my story. Plus the ad revenue has been pretty good, looking forward to that first check come November. And in a few months time I should be mostly made whole, when I don’t count my time. ⌚ But it’s something I like doing. Kind of like my vacation next week.

Tonight will be partly cloudy πŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 21st. South wind around 6 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1980.

That new bicycle lights are awesome. πŸ”¦ Super bright for riding at night, no worries about hitting potholes or missing something on the road or trail riding after dark. I was so impressed doing a little bit of night riding on CCC Road last night. πŸ›’ While it might be dusk πŸŒ† riding home from the grocery store tonight I should be good with that nice bright light. Plus I’ll have plenty of good fruits and vegetables to eat for the week to come. Still will need to visit Walmart probably on Tuesday for socks 🧦 and other supplies.

Yesterday I totally fell off the health wagon 🍻 having a few beers, eating too many carbs 🍞 and even maybe sneaking in a dart or two 🚬 around the campfire. πŸ”₯ Big portion of couscous, chicken, celery and spices for dinner. I don’t smoke or drink except by the fire sometimes. 🍏 Way too many apples and Greek yogurt. So bad! Got to have some fun, tonight it will be back to rice and lentils I think. πŸ€” I need to get to the supermarket πŸ›’ and get more fresh produce tonight as I will have finished off the carrots πŸ₯• and celery along with apples 🍏 and bananas 🍌 by the end of the day and I need them to eat at work tomorrow.

Rainy weekend on tap to start the October Vacation. 🌧️ Saturday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Sunday, rain likely. Cloudy, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

What a bummer. πŸ˜” I’m really watching next weekend to see how my October vacation is going to go. I really don’t want to postpone it due to rapidly dropping daylight, leaves and temperature. I can live with a rainy weekend as I drive south to West Virginia πŸ—» but not a week of rain and high temperatures in the mid 40s. I might have to reconsider my trip – cancel it, postpone it or choose another location closer to home. I don’t know, going to watch the forecast for Thomas WV as it draws closer, the 8-14 day outlook suggests cool but dry which I’m good with if not too windy. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Average Night Below Freezing 🌌 when the sun will be setting at 4:36 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 1964. Those days are coming much too quickly and I’ll eventually need to turn back on the heat and plug air leaks in my apartment.

I Guess Columbus Day Weekend Isn’t a Complete Washout 🌧 πŸ€›πŸ» β›΅ πŸ‚

Totally bummed out about this weekend, but maybe I shouldn’t be. It didn’t rain until quite late into the night and this morning the rain has slackened up quite a bit. Maybe it will be nice enough to go for a bike ride to Voorheesville or Five Rivers — and it might be pretty to check out the Pine Hollow Arboretum which amazingly enough I’ve never been there. Almost rain free-enough to make me wish I had headed out of town to get camping. Maybe tomorrow but it’s likely going to be cold and windy, and probably still damp. We’ll see come the morning, I got to start working on packing and thinking about West Virginia sooner rather then later.

Good morning! Happy Saturday on this rather Rainy Start to Columbus Day Weekend! Rain showers, at least a few drops of rain here and there and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 10 am.

I slept in until 5:50 AM when my alarm went off ⏰ got up and make oatmeal-banana pancakes to start off my morning. 😡 Lots of coffee β˜• so I waited a while before heading out in case I had to piss up a storm, and ended up deciding bicycling was a safer option lest I needed to pee 🚽 or the sky opened up with rain. β˜”

Today will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. β›ˆ Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Temperature falling to around 57 by 5pm. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches possible. Yeah, even though it’s not raining right now, I’m glad I’m not camping in that kind of crap. That’s a lot of rain. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1963.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:44 pm with sun having an altitude of 42° from the due south horizon (-28.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 5:51 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (257°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (263°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:28 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:55 pm, which is one minute and 43 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:29 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 56 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over today.

Tonight will have showers, mainly before 1am. 🌧 Low of 47 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Northwest wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 38 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1964.

For tomorrow, Sunday, things may improve. β›… A slight chance of showers before 8am, then a slight chance of showers after noon. Partly sunny, with a high near 59. Southwest wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. That wind will make it cool but maybe I should plan to do some biking and camping out of town. πŸ• I heard there is some pretty good color in the Catskills. And for Columbus Day, cool but mostly sunny, with a high near 59. South wind around 9 mph. That does seem like an improvement over earlier forecasts. πŸ˜€ My parents are out of town this weekend, so I won’t be visiting them this weekend, so I am kind of free to do whatever I want this weekend both days and I don’t have to rush home. I have enough clothes for the upcoming week for work, as it’s going to be cool and I wore t-shirt and shorts all last week, including the day I was off. πŸ‘– I will have to go to the laundromat later in the week though before I head down to West Virginia. Assuming that’s where I end up — if it looks truly cold and wet for the following week I could change my plans to be closer to home, but regardless I plan to camp for the full week. 🀷‍♂️

I am watching the forecast for both here in Delmar, Wellsboro Penna and Thomas WV, 🌧 and I’m not pleased with how much rain I’m seeing, though 7 days out it really is just a crap shoot. The rain numbers are quite meaningless at this point as so much could change. If it rains on my drive down to WV it’s not the end of the world, I don’t need to take a million different side trips. I’ll skip the Pine Creek Rail Trail πŸš‚ and the C-O Canal Trail 🚲 until later in the week or not at all, and mostly just drive down, and hunker down at camp. 🚘 Once I’m in West Virginia once camp’s set up the rain is less of an issue. Indeed, the 8-14 day outlook suggests especially in West Virginia in the mid-Atlantic states it might be a fairly dry week but cool. 😎 I’ll take that as long as there isn’t snow. ❄️

I will be bringing my heater, and can hot tent if it’s really cold up in Canaan Heights but I want to have sunny days for hiking and bicycling, plus it makes the scenery better. ♨️ β›Ί I hear they’re getting their first likely frost in the high country this weekend, so by next weekend it should still be close to peak color, without the crowds of Columbus Day Weekend. πŸ‘ͺ There is a reason I waited to later this year, plus it seems like autumn is occurring each year a bit later — and the High Country of West Virginia is more like the Hilltowns climate-wise then the mountains of New York due to the more southerly location.

I found my West Virginia maps including the Monongahela National Forest πŸ—Ί along with the Pine Creek Rail Trail and several other Pennsylvania State Parks I may want to visit on the way down assuming it’s not raining. I am going to print up at work a few small scale maps of Canaan Heights and some other trails in the Otter Creek and Dolly Sods Wilderness at work, πŸ–¨ assuming I can find a printer that still works in the office, lol. 🀣 No-ones going to care if I print up like four pages, assuming that the machine still works as nobody prints much anymore work-related. Then it’s just clothes and supplies to pack for camping. I will bring a fair amount of food with me, but only one cooler as it will be cool enough that most fruits and vegetables don’t need cooling, and I don’t eat nearly as much meat and dairy as I once did. πŸ₯© πŸ₯› I’m not a vegetarian but healthier, whole foods that are low on saturated fats really don’t need as much refrigeration.

The past few days I’ve been getting a ton of blog traffic πŸ—Ί πŸ€– I think with people looking for places to camp and hike for the Columbus Day Weekend. One day I pulled in over $10 in ad revenue, and I’m in the low-$30s of what I’ve pulled in over the past week and a half of running ads. I think I will be close to $70 by the end of month, and while I won’t get paid until I rack up $100 in revenue, I think by December 1st I’ll probably be getting my first check πŸ’° which could easily be above $130 by my own estimates, though it depends how much demand drops for my blog as the winter season approaches. β˜ƒ Traffic usually drops fairly low in December and January. Maybe I need to do more maps relating to skiing and snowmobiling or winter camping locations. πŸ• But it will pick up again come April and May, having looked at my old web logs. It’s good because the $540 check to the web host goes out tomorrow for the next three years. Hopefully, within a year I’ll made enough from blog ads to be made whole, all while enjoying telling my story.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends πŸ›₯️ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, warm and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.

Catskills

15 bean soup kind of day… Good for using up a lot of vegetables in the fridge and counter 🍲

Well folks, I was hoping for a nicer weekend. I am surprised how long the rain is sticking around this morning, maybe it was a good thing I stayed home. That is soup is good, lots of garlic and spices. I know what I’ll be dipping in the fresh homemade whole-wheat bread the rest of today.

Good morning! Where did September go? Got washed away with the rain. I’m glad I’m not camping this morning, though if I headed north or west it probably wouldn’t be too bad. Rain and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. β˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 54 degrees. Cool and damp, I have my windows closed.

Today will have showers likely, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 70 degrees at 5pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 2pm. Northwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 62 degrees. The record high of 88 was set in 1905.

Not a great start to the day, I’m procrastinating on my morning walk 🚢. I was up at 5:30 but it’s a dark morning and now it’s raining out. β˜” The 15 bean soup is done and absolutely delicious. I have bread I made up earlier in the week and took out of the freezer, it will be good dipped in the soup. Nice smokey flavor from the smoked paprika and a nice under-note from the garlic and onions I chopped up on it. 🍲 Banana oatmeal pancakes made extra fluffy with baking soda topped with shredded mango and ginger with maple syrup. Yum πŸ˜‹.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:46 pm with sun having an altitude of 44.7Β° from the due south horizon (-26.2Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:03 pm with the sun in the west (261Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (267Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:41 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:07 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:42 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 50 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Not sure what today’s plans are going to look like. 🏠 I think it’s best to say it will be a stay home kind of day, but assuming it clears out it probably will involve a bike ride later on out to Voorheesville, Five Rivers or maybe both. I should go down to the library and get some books and work on the Internet too. πŸ“š I don’t think the rain is going to stop early enough though at this point for the sun to dry things out so I can paint over some of the rust spots on Big Red. 🚚

Tonight will have patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 53 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming northwest around 5 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 28 occurred back in 1993.

Ad revenue has been decent on the blog, πŸ“Ί I’ve been pulling in about $2.25 a day since I figured out the placement that I can live with. So that works out to be around $67 a month, though after hunting season is over I expected revenue to drop as there is less demand for my maps but it will pick up come May, might even top $100 a month as people seek places to camp and hike. ☺ Not going to make me rich, indeed the government will take probably a quarter in taxesπŸ›οΈ but I can look forward to a hundred dollar check every two months or so which will cover hosting and more incentive to create useful good content for the blog. πŸ’΅ And it’s not like I’m selling little trinkets soon destine for the landfill or burn barrel. πŸ›’οΈI’m really pleased with the quality of some of the ads I’m getting from local businesses though some are complete crap.

Looking ahead, there are 5 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends πŸ›₯️ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, rather warm weather for November and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. But last year didn’t break the record high of 76 back in 1994.

Mount Prospect

Foggy 🌁 but a bit cooler this morning for a while

Company picnic day, I’m hoping for not a washout. Going to be hot but it should be relatively cool down by the river, in the shade.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Fog 🌫 nd 69 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around noontime. πŸ˜“ Won’t be quite as hot for the weekend but still very muggy. I guess the mildew needs one more chance to attack the walls in my apartment.

Kiddos are heading back to school 🚸 and while I tried to get out early for the walk 🚢 it was kind of dark out and I wanted to start the pot of beans to bring to the picnic along with the chickpeas I had soaking and now are boiling for hummus this weekend. πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ I’m working from home this morning and then I’ll get sweet corn 🌽 at Stanton’s around noon time before heading to the picnic. 🧺 I might also get some canteloupe as I want some more good things to have to eat at the picnic and it’s inexpensive and what doesn’t go at the picnic I can bring home and eat. 🍈 I’m just worried about having enough good and healthy options at the picnic.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. β›ˆοΈ After the fog burns off, mostly sunny and hot β˜€οΈ, with a high of 92 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 11am. Heat index values as high as 99. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1945.

It should be a nice day but hot. 😰 That said, the river breeze will be nice. I’m going up to visit and spend some time with Linda this evening – John Wolcott’s wife – as she has some old clothes for me to look at and I’m sure it’s tough with her husband’s passing. A lot of her old friends came to visit I’m sure for John and I don’t want her to feel totally cut off though the facility she lives in has a lot of good programs but it must be lonely. πŸ§“πŸ» Plus she has air conditioning there and by the time I get home it will be much cooler.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 53.5Β° from the due south horizon (-17.3Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 6:44 pm with the sun in the west (273Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west (279Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:22 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 7:48 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:25 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 80 degrees. The dew point will be 70 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over today.

Yesterday I reached out to my web hosting provider πŸ•Έto drop the nycowboy.org domain which I haven’t used for years but I couldn’t delete myself as it was the primary hosting domain. But now I can drop it and won’t need to pay for it’s renewal come late October. I decided to renew my web host but it’s gotten expensive with inflation but in the grand scheme of things it’s not that expensive.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly before midnight. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly cloudy β›ˆοΈ , with a low of 68 degrees at 4am. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 71 at 6pm. Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming southwest in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1978.

Last night I decided to cook up the asparagus πŸͺ΄ I got for camping πŸ• but didn’t use up and was starting to wilt. I cooked it up with peppers, pearl onions and using a can of mackerel 🐠 which turned out quite good. I tried to make chickpea flour with my food processor this morning but I couldn’t grind the dry chickpeas enough to create a fine flour. But I used it as a crust with the eggs this morning with a layer of pulverized tomatoes πŸ…, eggs 🍳, peppers, onions, garlic and parmesan cheese. Not too bad when finished off in the broiler.

Still quite unstable for the weekend. β›ˆοΈ Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 71 at 10am. Sunday, showers, mainly after 2pm. High near 78. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Maximum dew point of 71 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

Still hoping to get to Thacher Park this weekend on the Nature Bus 🚍. And spend the day riding, assuming it’s not too wet. And reading πŸ“–, relaxing in the hammock. It’s free and fun which is good with do many expenses lately. 🚡 Sunday I hope to visit mom and dad, assuming they’re up for that.

Gap

I didn’t expect to get wet before heading out to Five Rivers 🐸

I mean I probably should have with the summer we’ve had expect rain. Going to clear out later but will be cool for the family clam bake.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Rain showers and 65 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. β˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees. The skies will clear around noontime.

Woke up early πŸŒ… and to run to the bathroom 🚽 and decided not to go back to sleep. Milled oatmeal down to a fine powder in the food processor and then added one of the fresh apples 🍏 that I got at Yonder Farms and ultimately a banana 🍌 for sweetness and consistency and a bit of water for pancakes πŸ₯ž. Black coffee β˜• and frozen fruit with sugar free syrup made for a good breakfast.

Rode Blackie 🚡 out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐸 for some nature observation and to get away a bit this morning, though I wasn’t expecting the rain. β˜” Not super wet but unexpected in my mind, I’m hiding our under the pavilion for now. I’ll go for a short walk 🚢 and then head home. Then shower 🚿, get a few groceries at Walmart and clams πŸ¦ͺ at Market 32 πŸ›’ then head out to the folks house by later midday. πŸ•›

Today will have isolated showers before 9am. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 62 at 11am. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1948.

Yesterday afternoon at Thacher Park 🏞 was nice, though some of those trails were rougher on the bike 🚲 then expected but I try to be super gentle with Blackie not wanting to break shit but I’m also not afraid to now ride somewhat rougher trails with Blackie but I still prefer gravel. Super muddy after the summer that was. Still want to get to Charles Baker State Forest to ride before the snow 🌨 comes. Not that I probably have much of a worry this winter with El NiΓ±o and I’m not planning on doing much trail riding which closes October 31st, just road riding.

John Wolcott’s funeral is over β›ͺ that chapter is closed. The whole wheat bread I made last night came out pretty good, most of it is now frozen. Last night’s dinner was commercial protein pasta you find in the supermarket with a bunch of spinach and the remaining kale I had plus mackerel for a good boost in the omega 3, healthy fats to help absorb the vitamins that make up the spinach and kale. The fats, protein and fiber fill you up quickly. 🍲

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.5Β° from the due south horizon (-13.3Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:03 pm with the sun in the west (278Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-northwest (285Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:41 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:08 pm, which is one minute and 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous πŸŒ” Moon in the south-southeast (151Β°) at an altitude of 15Β° from the horizon, 228,020 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 26 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy πŸŒƒ with a low of 56 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 6th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 6pm. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 59 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1982.

Now that I made bread with yeast 🍞, I’m interested in doing baking using baking powder or baking soda for those times I don’t want to mess with kneading or waiting 24 hours for the bread to rise. That’s more kind of for making biscuits but they can be a source of healthy carbs too if you limit the unhealthy fats by using olive oil or ghee and don’t use sugar. Also I was playing with my food processor this morning and will just dry oatmeal seems to do a decent job of milling whole grain oatmeal down to oat flour – and not just pancakes. πŸͺ

Today in 1859, Petroleum is discovered in Titusville, Pennsylvania leading to the world’s first commercially successful oil well. πŸ›’ To this day, that town still smells like petroleum, and it floats in the creeks, but they produce much less oil today then at the peak around the turn of the century. Exploring the Oil Creek State Park is fun as is Pithole abandoned oil town but do expect a strong petroleum smell. πŸ‘ƒ But then again, Western PA smells like petroleum like the Black River Valley smells like cattle and manure. Just part of the country.

Looking ahead but maybe not forward to dark mornings walked or risen, there are 2 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise πŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:16 pm with dusk at 7:43 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 83 and 56 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1931.

The days go by too quickly it seems βŒ›

I was saddened, maybe even devestated to hear of John Wolcott’s passing while I was up in the wilderness, cut off from the news of the world. At one level I expected it sooner, he wasn’t well when I left for summer vacation and he hadn’t gotten better the last time I visited and I knew the end was near. And it was a cold and rainy four days, away from it all up at Piseco-Powley Road, though maybe it was good to be away from it all for four days before summer was done for good. No radio news, nothing up to date since leaving Thursday. Last summer weekend camping at least at Piseco-Powley though I might do an autumn trip and thinking Speculator for Labor Day Weekend. Can you believe it in two weeks?

Good afternoon! Partly cloudy and 74 degrees at the Herkimer Home Historical Site. β›… There is a west breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. The dew point is 62 degrees.

I would have hoped for better weather for the weekend that was 🌦️ but I’m not surprised by rain every day with the summer that’s was and the forecast that degraded as the long weekend approached. There was some breaks of sunshine β˜€ but most of the weekend was cloudy with times of rain, especially after dark but also each morning after I got up including take down take down day, earlier today. Cold and rainy. Not a wash out but at times I was glad I packed the propane heater it got a fair amount of use for August camping!

Fortunately I caught the impending rain β˜” with the darkening skies and got the screen tent πŸŽͺ, flags 🎌 and tarp down before they could get very wet. πŸ’§ Had a bit of sun today which is good for drying gear and as my starting and accessory batteries πŸ”‹ could use a good boost this morning as it’s been cloudy and I haven’t run my engine since Thursday. It was raining while driving down to Little Falls this afternoon but now it’s getting sunny and warmer.

This afternoon will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 63 at 4pm. West wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1937.

The rainy weekend did leave a lot of time for reading πŸ“– and playing around with cooking πŸ§‘β€πŸ³ some meals coming out better than others. Been trying to come up with filling meals that taste damn good, relatively easy to cook but also have less calories but more fiber and protein, along with essential vitamins. πŸ’Š Plus I have so much good farmers market 🌽 foods to eat up. The sweet corn 🌽 from Samdil’s was amazing as was the peaches πŸ‘ from Roger’s.

Took a few naps 😴 in the hammock besides reading, πŸ“– listening to podcasts and some bike riding 🚲 and hiking it’s been a very lazy weekend but I’m chocking it up to the weather. β˜” Honestly though if it had been nicer it would have been a lazier weekend just floating on the tube β•. Let’s be honest. Still every day either walked at least five miles, rode 7 Β½ or a combination of both. 🚢 Do it’s not like I was just eating 🍴 and sleeping. πŸ”₯ Had some nice fires in part because it was so cold and rainy, smokey at times due to the wet wood.

Bike 🚲 and hiked part of the way back to both the swimming hole off Old Edick Road snowmobile trail on Friday and on Saturday did Goldmine Stream Falls. Lot of water πŸ’¦ going over Goldmine Steam Falls. Thursday I rode up to Notch Mountain β›° and Friday also spent time at the Potholers but no swimming 🏊 due to it being very cold and the water levels dangerously high. I’ve never seen the Potholers so high in the summer months. πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ

Saturday night was the best night by far, stayed up until close to midnight watching the shooting stars ✨ from my hammock then listening to music 🎢 down by the campfire πŸ”₯ for warmth. Had a second beer 🍻 and maybe a smoke 🚬 which is so uncommon these days since I’ve gotten into healthy eating in my forties. But also snacked on sweet corn 🌽 and peaches πŸ‘ by the fire. No more cookies these days, I go for natural fruits when I’m hungry. Greek yogurt too but not on Saturday. Switched on Country is so much funnier when your slightly stoned. πŸ€ͺ

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:04 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.5Β° from the due south horizon (-10.9Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 7:18 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-northwest (288Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:56 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 4 seconds with dusk around 8:24 pm, which is one minute and 34 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter πŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (246Β°) at an altitude of 14Β° from the horizon, 246,018 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:03 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Today out exploring Little Falls, Herkimer Home, Bike Path and Moss Island. 🚲 No set agenda, I’m just in the area until 6 pm or so when I’ll take NY 5S to Sprakers then down to Sloansville and US 20, maybe stop for ice cream 🍦 and sweet corn 🌽 if I see a good place. I was surprised that Green Acres dinner and ice cream stand is still open in Dolgeville, I heard it’s closing but I’m not going back that way.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 64 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Light northwest wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1977.

The unavoidable truth is a five 5⃣ day work week ahead in the office 🏒 as the head director is off for my unit, and as the deputy I have to step up and fill in for her role. It’s fine, but no more passing the buck, ignoring emails πŸ“§ and not taking immediate action on staff and inter departmental requests because I don’t want to step on the toes πŸ‘£ of the director. πŸ™ˆ It means no sneaking off to the woods this week. Promised my mom next week to do a clam bake for them too. πŸ¦ͺ Following weekend though probably head to Spectulator, maybe taking off that Friday or working remotely.

Need to order the bolt πŸ”© and the tool to install the lost bolt on Blackie’s 🚡 rack. The zip tie was a good emergency fix but it still rattles and I’m not convinced that I should carry a lot of groceries on the rack with the loose bolt. Could fail under weight. 🍏 Rather be safe then sorry and have groceries spill all over the road.

In 2014, seventy-two people are killed in Japan’s Hiroshima Prefecture by a series of landslides β˜” caused by a month’s worth of rain that fell in one day. Reminds me of the some of the extreme rain we’ve been having lately.

I was sadden to learn of John Wolcott’s passing this afternoon 😒 while I was away from town at camp. πŸ‘ΌπŸΌ He was quite the man though I don’t know even half the story as so much of his memory had passed by the time I started interviewing him and going through his files. πŸ“‚ I do always wonder what was in his attic that burned in that fire πŸ”₯. I know after that fire I personally made sure to keep multiple off site back ups, scan in important documents and purge a lot of the paper πŸ“„ I owned. Never got to the really interesting stuff in his attic where the fire burned hottest. So much of the story untold. πŸ•―

I’m glad I blog in part because it’s a way to ensure at least part of my story is told and can get found on the Way back Machine and the Internet Archives. πŸ–₯ You never really know how long people’s lives will last, or the institutions and things around us. Here one day, gone the next. πŸ•Š Honestly I thought πŸ’ the news πŸ“° would happen during summer vacation, though I’m glad I did spend a few afternoons with him at the hospital, took him around the Crossings and read to him before it was over. πŸ¦† 🐦 πŸ¦‹ 🎍 I do wish I had found time to do that one more time before it was too late. πŸ™ I need to do better with my parents.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 6:30 Sunrise πŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:20 pm with dusk at 7:47 pm.
