June 8, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Today 8:30 PM Sunset 🌇 . It’s even later as we are farther west here in Speculator. Next Tuesday is Primary Day 🗳️ . Hot and humid morning here in Speculator, NY — around 67 degrees. Some sun but not a lot. 🌦 Calm wind. The dew point is 65 degrees. Might see some sun today, but it will be hot and pretty miserable today. But I bet it’s even worse in Albany.

Yesterday, was pretty much a typical work day, rather hot by mid-afternoon. 😅 I tried to stay cool, and keep my coolers cool – but already the heat has been tough on the ice. I am trying to use up as much of the milk, eggs, and meat as possible 🥩 🥛 before it goes rancid between my breakfast of eggs and sausage, 🍳 and burritos 🌯 for dinner last night.

Today will have isolated showers before 9am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9am and 3pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 3pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 78 degrees at 12pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 8am. West wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2011.

I am slowly taking down camp, ⛺ leaving up the screen tent as long as possible to dry out. We had a good rain shower a little before dusk last night and got everything wet, although I was able to hop in back of my truck and miss out in the brief but very heavy rain. A bit worried about the weather later today for driving back after work, but I”ll take it one hour at a time. 🌩 If it gets too bad, I guess I can stay overnight and leave very early to drive home.

Buggy this morning, and just super humid. 🐜 Today I will work in town, either down by Lake Algonquin and the Speculator Library. 💻 Yesterday I worked from camp, with the hotspot and the phone, but I don’t want to use too much bandwidth and sometimes the internet was a bit unreliable. While it was certainly cooler to camp off of NY 8B, although I probably would have had much more reliable and faster service if I had camped off of Hartwood Hill. 📶

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.4° from the due south horizon (-0.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:54 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 31 seconds with dusk around 9:11 pm, which is 38 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:59 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 8pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 62 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10pm. Light west wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1977.

On this day in 1968, Robert F. Kennedy’s funeral takes place at the St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. Ironically, or maybe not, NPR had a story about RFK Jr., maybe not the good RFK, about the his anti-vaccine activism. I think it’s kind of silly, but if people don’t want to get the two shots and want to get sick from COVID-19, then it’s their loss. I don’t think it’s bad to ask questions.

After the hot weather lately, it is expected to cool down by the weekend. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 52 at 8am. Sunday, scattered showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is Primary Day 🗳️ when the sun will be setting at 8:40 pm with dusk at 9:15 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1988.

June 1, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Suddenly it’s June 🐮 ! Dairy month with all those cows eating delicious first cut hay and corn silage popping up out of ground, 🌱 Gay Pride month so hang your flag, 🏳️‍🌈 and Black Lives Matter month. ✊🏾 Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset. 🌇 Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ Calm wind. A bit gray this morning, but it’s expected skies will clear around noontime.

I can’t believe that the we are starting out this morning so cloudy ☁️, but I’m hopeful that we will see more sun ☀ later. At least it’s a nice enough of a morning for the walk 🚶🏻. My laptop is fully charged so I can work out back later on when it’s gets nicer. Might as well work outside today as tomorrow and Thursday it’s back in the office 🏢. I don’t mind but I like the sunshine when I can get it.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1918.

Today I will work from home after my morning walk. I need to get groceries, 👜 contact solution, 👀 and some other supplies at lunch time so I want to head to Walmart today. I probably should get groceries for the weekend, although maybe I can get out on Thursday night after work. I will probably start packing for the weekend, 💼 as I might have to work late on Thursday night or end up over in the archives continuing to sort, pack and dry John Wolcott’s files. 📂 I plan to leave early Friday morning at this point to work remote from Lake Pleasant and camp up that way over the weekend. 🏖 Going to be a hot weekend and even hotter next week. While I could probably work remote on next Tuesday, I probably will come back Monday night after work so I have time to prepare for next week in office and Wednesday and Thursday and work from home on the following Tuesday.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.5° from the due south horizon (-1.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:45 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 47 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. Light southwest wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Today I expect my Bluetooth speaker 🔊 to arrive in the mail ✉. The old one I’ve had for six years now stopped charging 🔋 and the battery life wasn’t great. I thought about trying to take it apart for parts or repair 🛠 but opening the waterproof case will be a rather destructive process I fear and the result wouldn’t be great in a wet and muddy camp environment. I kind of think it would be fun to shoot 🔫 it and then burn it but that rubber would stink to high heaven and I couldn’t salvage parts. I hope I got a good quality model, I researched it over a couple of days but I don’t know. Always hard to know which on line reviews are legit. As long as it’s loud enough to be heard over woods and road noise and the battery life is reasonable I’m good.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. 🏊 Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Maximum dew point of 66 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees. Yeah, that’s going to be a toasty one especially back in Albany. With that heat I’ll definitely want the screen tent not just to keep cool but control the bugs. Thinking of doing some swimming in Speculator and maybe some fishing. 🎣 I thought about going to the Green Mountains but I like being closer to WI-FI should something come up, and I prefer to do my Friday meeting using the laptop rather then the phone, especially when I’m away from home with the virtual background.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset 🌇 when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 81 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2011. It is quite possible we break that record this year, it seems like the dog days of summer will be coming early this year.

 Bourne And Grout Pond

What a week it’s been … 🔥📜 👨🏻‍🚒

Over the past week I’ve literally spent 17 plus hours sorting through wet, smokey and increasingly moldy papers trying to save whatever Albany history I can before it’s forever gone. While maybe John Wolcott will never be as famous as Erastus Corning or Nelson Rockeller, the truth is activists like him preserved some of the city’s most important history and lands, raised important questions made a difference again the Democratic machine, often at great personal cost.

While he did pretty well when “Republican” Theresa Cook (ala that time Rezsin Adams ran as a “Republican” for county legislature) was running the county clerk’s office, other times he was attacked tooth and nail for his performance as a title searcher for the county, even though he was probably the best title searcher and researcher of deeds and history the county ever had. I came across his lawsuit today drying out his papers along with the numerous exhibits on Albany County corruption and sneaky misdeeds or the Erastus Corning machine and by that time Jim Coyne’s county operations. The Corning machine was only really interested in punishing male dissidents, they couldn’t see in their minds that women could have any influence of politics. Ultimately it was the federal District Court that sided with him and had him reinstated but he fought for years to get the pension credit he deserved going back to the days when he was a consultant for Fort Orange 787 dig. The Fort Orange file got wetter than I thought but we got it apart drying. It will be saved. And while, maybe the history books write differently, certainly it was John Wolcott who helped to take down Jim Coyne through alerting the FBI to Coyne’s crooked deal over the Knickerbocker Arena, although like with Fort Orange and Paul Huey, the credit can’t necessarily be just his own.

And then as I was going through the papers, putting dried ones away I heard a screech and bang, and a car crashed into the traffic light pole at South Swan and Morton Avenue, causing the 100 plus lb traffic light to break free of the wire. The clearly fleeing car then took off leaking what appeared to be coolant. Police showed up, hauled the broken stop light off the road, talked to the neighbors and took off. Not sure what happened to the fleeting crashed car, I was too busy sorting papers. Albany is going downhill rapidly, things were looking up in the city not that long ago. I’m just glad I’ve been taking the bus there rather than driving especially with the neighborhoods getting so rough. I still remember that last time I walked down to Sheridan Hollow to visit John, a firearm rang out as somebody shot out a car window.

While working on John’s papers, I’ve been going through the EIS for a project in Troy and some Pine Bush issues in Guilderland with some tax data and GIS Mapping. People have gotten to know all the amazing things that I can do and I get more and more requests. It seems like everywhere I’m going I’m getting sucked into fights against City Hall everywhere, me with public records and free software, going up against million dollar reports with expensive professional software, internal only data and decades of training and experience. But if we don’t raise questions and fight development then who will? It’s tough as these professionals have big budgets and skills, but if house wife Jane Jacobs could stop Robert Moses, then so can ordinary people like myself. Not going to win every fight but it’s good to raise questions and stop bad development where we can. Even if it’s a pain to the local Bob Moses of today. It’s important we protect open space. Even if it involves some risk to myself and makes me not trust or respect most government workers.

Beyond all those wet and smokey papers and battling City Hall it’s been a crazy week for sure. The legislative session is wrapping up and I’ve been swamped with work, I was going through agendas for work well into the night on Saturday night. It’s been a crush at work and when I’m not in the office most of the time until late I’ve been drying out papers. I did get some bird watching in at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center this morning – saw a red tailed hawk being harassed by a few sparrows on the way out walking out there. I continue to back up, photograph and store important documents electronically in case of a disaster.

And then I’m also finally dealing with some of my own issues in my life. The counseling I’m getting is helping, it seems consistent with the advice I’m reading from trustworthy sources and publications on the internet. But change comes hard especially with bad habits of both negative thinking and repeated thoughts in thinking I’ve had ingrained for two decades now. I’m trying to change but it’s hard. I’m certainly learning a lot, becoming a better person because of counseling.

And I was doing better until the mixed emotions of Mr. Wolcott’s house fire – grief and sense of lostmy work sorting and carefully cataloging documents would be forever lost. But we saved a lot. But the shock and horror of it all, seeing that house in such disarray and burnt – that only a week ago before the fire when I was sorting and filing papers things looked so different. Plus all that stuff going to the Rensselaer landfill to be buried and forever viewed from my downtown office as a dirt and grass covered hill. Fire can be so bad, especially in the urban areas. Then I saw the other side tonight out in the country, the place I grew up. My parents neighbors, the ones who live in trailers and raise pigs and cows, were having a big ol bonfire, drinking beer burning an old couch, mattress and pallets with lots of black smoke. I’m so jealous of their homestead, even if they are what the government calls poor people who live in rundown trailers and barns. Kind of like that film about Appalachia I’ve been watching. But the country life is a life I’ll get to eventually, saving a bit each paycheck.

… Fire can destroy but it can cleanse too. That’s what my therapist reminds me.

May 31, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸 ! Thanks to all that have served, whether it was for a noble cause, a paycheck, or because our government leaders where foolish war mongers. Five weeks to Hottest Time of the Year 😅. That said, after a cold and rainy past few days, the heat machine cranks up by this mid-week with hot and muggy weather. At least I have the fan out. But for now, cloudy, damp and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃.

Yesterday, I spent most of the afternoon continuing to dig through the remaining increasingly moldy remaining files. 📁 We’ve pretty much reached the end of wet stuff, and things have mostly dried out. Some old newspaper articles literally fell apart and became mush — wouldn’t have been bad to toss in a compost pile with some manure to turn into dirt. But most of the papers themselves were salvaged 📄 although we found more wet stuff then expected at the end and kind of ran low on screens to dry things out. My hat’s definitely off to the firefighters, demolition workers and city officials 👨‍🚒 👨‍💼 👷 that made it possible to recover so much. There are still some good people in the government. And the team of volunteers including Lynne Jackson and Dan Van Riper who have been working for over a week now to save things. I’m going back over this afternoon for another session of drying and salvaging materials, although after today I am going to be pretty busy and long for work, 🏢 and I’m hoping to get out of town before work on Friday. 🏕

Memorial Day will have showers likely, mainly before 1pm. Patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy with more sun late 🌦, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 12pm. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2013.

In a little bit, certainly by around 8 AM or so I am going to walk out to Five Rivers. 🐦 Probably the trails are just one big mosh pit after the rain, but there should be a lot of robins out. With so much rain lately, I haven’t had a chance to do much walking or time outdoors. Last weekend I hiked Bennett Hill and I’ve done my morning walks, but not many evening walks. 👣 It’s been tough with the weather for sure. ⛈ Maybe there will be a lot of wildlife out after all the rain we’ve had later. Then I’m going to come home, catch a bus downtown again, more file drying 📂 and then out to folks house for Memorial Day/Sunday dinner. 🍔 Might be nice enough to sit outside.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3° from the due south horizon (-1.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 48 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:44 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 59 degrees. The dew point will be 48 degrees. What a big change from what we’ve had lately. There will be a northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 18 seconds over yesterday. Days are getting long now, for a few more weeks.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 46 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 10th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 41 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1945.

Tomorrow at lunch time 🥪 I need to go to the store and get food. 🛒 I am working from home on Tuesday but Wednesday and Thursday I will be at the office downtown 🏢 and I expect late nights in the office so I’m not going to have a lot of free time. Friday morning before work I plan to head north and work from Spectulator.

Going to be a nice, hot and humid summer weekend. 🏊 Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 9am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 88. Maybe 90? Maximum dew point of 65 at 7pm. I would say, that’s very much summer weather. Hot and humid. 😓 Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.

My therapy session 👨‍⚕️ has been postponed one week from Friday, so this week I can get at least in theory in get up to the Adirondacks and work from Lake Pleasant on Friday and then camp up in the Speculator-area. I am a bit tired of being up there, but having the internet at the library and the nice lake to sit down by and work, sure makes it’s worthwhile. 🏕 I want to do Piseco-Powley Road and potholers, but i think I will wait a few weeks until the legislative session is over — supposedly on June 10th, and then take a long weekend when I can be totally off-the-grid and not be doing work emails or anything else work related. 🏊‍♀️ Where work can be the furthest from the mind. Plus in two or three weeks the water temperature should be much warmer. I plan to take off a fair amount of time this summer, and maybe I can do some remote work too, although I kind of hate the mixing of work and pleasure, even if it means ore gets done.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Summer ️⛱️ when the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 92 and 69 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938.

Tired Dog

May 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Fathers Day 👨 . The unofficial end of black fly season, although I tend to think they’re around until July 4th, although come late June it’s mostly mosquitos then July comes around and things aren’t so bad. Rain and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

I wanted to walk around to Five Rivers 🐦 this morning before the rain, but it’s already raining and I did not get up early enough apparently. 😴 I’ve been bad this weekend about getting started, after getting up at 6:30 AM each day last week, so I could go for my morning walk before heading downtown on the bus. 🚌 Memorial Day Weekend will continue to be cold, damp and rainy but the skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm in time for picnics, although you’ll definitely want a long sleeve shirt. 🌭 🍔

Today will rain, mainly after 10am. 🌧 High of 50 degrees at 4pm. 25 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. North wind around 9 mph. It’s already become a very wet day, and it looks like it only will get wetter. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

Yesterday, I was over at the apartment where they are storing the recovered documents for John Wolcott. 📜 Didn’t find a lot of interesting things, more papers and photos, mostly personal stuff. Important for him, but it wasn’t a lot of great historic value we found yesterday. But I’ve been mostly looking through photos that we’ve been saving by soaking, separating, and drying. 🖼 👃 At least the files don’t stink as much yet, although we are starting to run the clock with the damp weather 💦 and mildew starting to grow on the wet documents. I’m going to head back there later today.

I was worried that the Fairchild Aerial Photos of Albany Pine Bush in the 1920s were misplaced, but Lynne was able to find them. I really want to get a high resolution scan of them, maybe because I’m a bit biased towards them with my love old aerial photos. 🌲 But they can also really tell a story about the Albany Pine Bush and world long gone. The USGS photos taken in the early to mid-1950s for stereographic mapping of the land for topographic maps is great, but it’s from the 1950s, and a lot of land use change occurred earlier then the 1950s in Pine Bush. 🔍

While I should have done this a long time ago, 📸 I finally took high resolution photos of my guns and their serial numbers, along with various diplomas and certification documents including my truck title an birth certificate, 👨‍🎓 and family photos, and put them in an encrypted file both on my laptop and for off-site storage. Just with my ordinary camera. 📄 This way I figure if I am ever a victim of a natural disaster, be it fire, riot, tornado, flood, I’ll have my photos and important documents backed up, with all the numbers and key information. 💾 Sure, I’ll probably have to get a new copy of my birth certificate, et. certera at some point but when you have the information it’s easier to get. Data storage is cheap, and while I don’t do the whole cloud thing, ☁️ off-site is important in case the building I live in is destroyed or my laptop is stolen or damaged. 🔫 Likewise, with the guns it’s a lot easier to file a police report if you have the serial numbers and photos. Salvaging all those charred documents 🔥 really makes me want to be a lot more careful at backing up everything. Plus I’ve purged a ton of paper documents that aren’t relevant anymore. 🗑 I need to tackle the crawl space and get rid of some worn out clothes and other things this summer. 👚 ♻️

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (-1.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly before 4am. 🌧 Low of 47 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day will have a chance of rain before 7am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. 🌦 Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

I had higher hopes about Memorial Day 🇺🇸 but it seems like the bad weather will continue until Tuesday when it will get nice. I can work from home on Tuesday, and while I have to work in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, I’m thinking of working from the Speculator area on Friday and Monday, just because there is that great library there and decent places to camp in the area. 🏕 I am going to hold off on the Potholers for this weekend, although looks plenty warm. I could go for a swim at Speculator Beach.  🏊‍♀️ Not sure if I will bring my kayak — my initial feeling is no to that, because I will need the solar power to work. 🛶

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Fathers Day 👨 when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold but otherwise partly sunny day and temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892. Back before my time, and I suspect yours too.

Grass Along Lake

May 28, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Memorial Day Weekend 🏕️ ! Mostly cloudy and 49 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. Blue skies to the south, which is odd considering the rain due later. The skies will clear Monday around 1 am.

It looks like today is going to be the start of the coldest Memorial Day Weekend ❄ since at least 2013, that year when I was camping 🏕 at Moose River Plains and it was so wet and muddy. Between the black flies 🐜 and everything else I am not convinced that Memorial Day Weekend is the best weekend ever to get out of town.

I am doing my morning walk 🚶🏻 early this morning fueled by the French Toast 🍳 and then will take a shower 🚿 and catch the bus down to the office 🏢. I decided to work downtown today as frankly I should be working more in the office as the pandemic is over. 🖥 Plus my work computer is so much faster than the Hotspot and VPN, save bandwidth etc. Plus it’s going to be a cold and rainy day 🌧️ and I’m heading over to the Dan’s vacant apartment to continue with the salvage effort of John’s water 💦 and smoke 🔥 damaged files 📂. Maybe next Friday I’ll work by Lake Pleasant.

Today will rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 56 degrees at 2pm. 19 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 9th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.❄

I think I left my rain ☔ coat at my parents house, but I have my umbrella and I’m hopeful it won’t be raining too hard at the end of the day. I told Lynne and Dan that I would be over this afternoon to continue salvaging John’s papers. Not going to be great weather for drying things 📄 but hopefully the weekend will be quite dry. I’m hoping I won’t get totally soaked on the way over.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.9° from the due south horizon (-1.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:42 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 8:57 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 49 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 15 hours and one minute of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. 🌧 Low of 44 degrees at 4am. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 29th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 70 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1956.

Tomorrow will rain likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 53 degrees at 5pm. 22 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. North wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

I might go out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center 🐦 later in the evening tomorrow but it all depends on the weather and if I should go back in the city to continue drying papers and photos 📸. We did find we could salvage most photos with enough water abs soaking to seperate them out. I want to see if I can get digital photos of my valuable documents and other things this weekend so I can have an off site backup which could prove valuable as I learned from the fire recovery efforts. 📄 Digital data is so much easier to back up, store and keep safe than the paper records of yesteryear.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 59. 🌥 Northeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees. Not this year. Definitely a bad weather weekend for Memorial Day Weekend.

But Memorial Day looks slightly better. Mostly sunny, with a high near 71. 🌞 But still cold. At least it will be nice for the Memorial Day Parades. 🇺🇸 I’m hoping the next weekend will be nicer but right now it looks unsettled.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Last Sunset After 8:30 PM 🌆 with dusk at 9:04 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain and temperatures between 80 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1900.

Hills Above Sherburne

May 27, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. ☺ Nice morning, getting closer to the weekend. Heading downtown in a bit after my morning walk. Four weeks to Strawberry Moon 🌕 . Mostly sunny and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 56 degrees.

Decided to go for my morning walk 🚶🏻 early this morning at seven o’clock just because I wanted to walk on such a nice morning before I take a shower 🚿 and catch the local downtown. 🚏If the express bus stop was back, I’d probably call that my walk and be done. But it’s not back yet. I was talking to a bunch of regular 719 riders and they miss the service too but once again riding the 5:15 neither the reduced local bus service crowded or highway congestion wasn’t bad at all. 🚍 I think a lot of people are still either doing the hybrid model or full remote.

It is a nice morning, too bad it’s an office 🏢 day. But as that Cattaraugus County farm I follow on the YouTube always, I can’t control my day but I can my attitude. And I bet he doesn’t have to pay the big bucks to see his analyst, as he has cows to poop 💩 on him while milking 🐮 and soak him with his wet tongue. I am glad that I got an early enough start to do my walk 🚶🏻 and hear the Morning Dove 🕊 and the many Red Wing Blackbirds. I kind of like having the unlimited data on the bus 🚍 as that movie I was watching on the way home about rebuilding an old 1940s manure spreader certainly passed the time and it’s interesting how they used to build old farm equipment and how at least on the farm not everything is a throw away society. 🗑

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 72 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 19th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 7am. Northwest wind around 11 mph. So much nicer than yesterday. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1914.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.7° from the due south horizon (-2.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:41 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 8:56 pm, which is 53 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:40 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 62 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 32 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 44 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph becoming north after midnight. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1994.

Memorial Day Weekend looks increasingly cold, cloudy and rainy. 🌦 Saturday, a chance of rain, mainly before 11am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 57. Brr, that’s cold for April. And it’s almost June. Northeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 66. Maximum dew point of 40 at 7pm. Maybe a little better up north sunshine wise, but very cold. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees.

I think I am going to stay in town this Memorial Day Weekend 🏡 as rent is due this week, money is quite tight and frankly the weather doesn’t look great. I haven’t hiked out to Five Rivers in a few weeks and it would interesting to see how the spring birds 🐦 have changed as migration is winding down and summer birds are out. I feel like after the heavy rain on Friday things might be muddy but a good time for wildlife observation. I’m hoping for warm weather come June at any rate for visiting the Potholers 🏊🏻‍♂️. Rather save gas until then. ⛽ I am thinking I might also work downtown in the office tomorrow — mainly because it’s going to be a cold and rainy day, they want us in the office more, and to save data. I know they want us in the office more, and the two days I am currently assigned is  more of a minimum then a maximum. I’ll have to think about it more as the day progresses.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Latest Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.
