September 30, 2021 – Looking Ahead This Week

Thanks to the Omega block looks like October will start out cool ๐ŸŽƒ

I was hoping for a nice weekend, but especially up north it doesn’t look great. ๐Ÿ‚ I think you can say stick a fork in it at least when it comes to leaves around Pillsbury in the Adirondacks. Maybe I should have gone north last weekend.

This weekend might be okay ๐Ÿ‘Œ if I stay locally. Money is kind of tight after my car insurance and rent check ๐Ÿ’ต and I thought I had a lot of vacation days but if I take off six days to do West Virginia during the end of October ๐Ÿ‚ I will be running low especially if I take sometime mid November to camp out in Cazenovia. I’d like to do some more of the trailway – I’ve actually done most of it – but I’d like to do some of it again.

One possibility is to hike at a local state forest and camp โ›บ although the nights are getting cool and long so I may want something more than just a hammock and a flashlight. I thought about Schoharie but I’m thinking that for the following weekend.

Plus I’m just not sure how early it will cloud up and rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ on Saturday. Definitely looks a lot wetter up north. I still want to do more of the Catskill Scenic Trail but if I go to Schoharie I want to do more than one night.

I Can Help You Make a Map

Geographic Information Services (GIS)MapsCartography ๐Ÿ—บ

I am an amateur cartographer who designs maps and does a wide variety geospatial analysis using free and open-source geographic information software (GIS) and public sources of data to design quality maps, graphs, charts and datasets. I am looking for new and interesting projects to improve my skills, make connections and expand my portfolio.

Are you looking for my personal blog with it’s hiking, camping and outdoor recreation maps, along with a variety of charts, photos, and stories? Please visit andyarthur.org.

Mapping Avaliable

  • Tax/Property Mapping
  • High Resolution Aerial Photography
  • Recreational Maps – Hunting, Camping, Hiking
  • Georeference addresses using State Address Mapping service, plot them on a map
  • Wetlands, Topographic Contours, Land Cover
  • Compare historical aerial photos or maps to current photography
  • Web mapping using leaflet (HTML/Javascript file to embed on a website or use at home)

Example maps can found below.

Services Available

  • A list of property owners within 1,000 feet of a proposed development
  • How many cars per day pass a business?
  • How many people who live within 5 miles of a business or park?
  • How many African Americans and Hispanics live within 10 miles of Albany Pine Bush?
  • What are wealthiest election districts?
  • How many people ride public transit in a neighborhood?
  • How much of an area is wetland or farm field?
  • How big an interchange?
  • What is the average slope and elevation of an area or trail?

Example data can found below.

Pricing and Cost

For most projects, there is no fee. I am looking for experience, references, mentors and connections in the geospatial community.

If you have a large project, let’s talk about it. I might be willing to do it for free, if it’s something really interesting
or important like fighting suburban sprawl and pollution. I don’t a business or taxes set up, so I can’t really charge at this point.

How to get started?

Please send me an email describing the mapping or data project in as much detail as possible.

My email is andy@andyarthur.org

Data Avaliable

  • US Census – 2019 American Community Survey, 2020 US Census
  • NYS Tax and Assessment Rolls (2020)
  • NYSDOT Traffic Counts and Road Data
  • Historical Aerial Photography (primarily 1952, but earlier and later exist)
  • ArcGIS REST/Services and WMS Services from state and local agencies
  • LiDAR Elevation Profiles
  • USGS Topographic Maps, historic and modern – with overlays if requested
  • Data Repositories like CUGIR, DataNY.gov and NYSGIS
  • Recreation data from NYSDEC

Software Used

  • Quantum GIS (QGIS) including 3D Mapping
  • Geodata Abstraction Library (GDAL, ogr2ogr)
  • Python, including the data-science libraries PANDAS and GeoPANDAS
  • LeafletJS Web Mapping Services

Geographies Avaliable

  • Primary Capital Region and also much of New York State, also some for Pennsylvania, Vermont, West Virginia
  • State, county, municipal, school districts – Most data sets
  • Parks, highways, buffer (distance to) – Most data sets
  • Election districts – Roughly 75% of NYS counties
  • Census Tract or Blockgroup – 2019 American Community Survey
  • Tabulation Block – 2020 US Census

Are printed maps avaliable at this time?

Not currently. I can send you a file based on your specifications to print at your local print shop.

How long do mapping projects take?

Depends on complexity of the project. Many projects only take minutes, however if a project requires georeferencing, data cleaning, or custom shapes or layouts, it might take significantly longer. More revisions lead to better quality output.

Do you make maps professionally?

No! This is just a hobby. But I’m interested in expanding my skills. I do a lot of mapping for my blog and in support of community organizations like Save the Pine Bush.

Are my maps of good quality?

Thats for you to decide. I don’t have formal education in map making, and I don’t have professional tools. But do take a look at the work I’ve done below.

July 12, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Rain and 67 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” Calm wind. The dew point is 65 degrees. I drove back home in the rain this morning, as it was pretty wet up camping along Hope Falls Road.

I was going to do Piseco-Powely Road ๐Ÿ• but on my way up there decided on Pumpkin Hollow Road, but the sites are no longer officially designated, and I didn’t want to get drunk and then get yelled at up and told I had to camp somewhere else. Not that it was likely to happen, but the bugs seemed particularly bad on Pumpkin Hollow, so plans changed. ๐ŸŽƒ I was hoping to camp on that recently restored site on Creek Road, but that was taken. So I ended up camping on site on Hope Falls Road, the one nearest to parking area for Tenant Creek Falls, ๐ŸŒŠ and hiking back to the falls a couple of times during the weekend and then also hiking to Wilcox Lake..

Today will rain before noon, then a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 5pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 23rd. Maximum dew point of 69 at 2pm. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1935.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.3° from the due south horizon (-1.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:34 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:07 pm, which is 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (280°) at an altitude of 16° from the horizon, 238,791 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:51 pm. At sunset, watch for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 72 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 19 seconds over yesterday.

This evening I need to run to store and get a few supplies, ๐Ÿ‘œ including toilet paper and some food. ๐Ÿšฝ I also said I would swing over to a friend’s house and help them with a project in Glenmont. I think I also want to clean off some of the mud from the truck to hopefully slow the rust. I really need to paint those few rust spots that are bare metal these days before winter.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 7pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. Light southeast wind. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1939.

On this day in 1967, the Newark Riots begin with over six days of rioting, looting, and destruction leaving 26 dead. ๐Ÿคฏ There have been some crazy times lately but nothing like the late 1960s.

Hot this weekend, possibly with thunderstorms. ๐ŸŒฉ Saturday, showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Partly sunny, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 74 at 12pm. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 70 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I think it’s a wait and see for the weekend. ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ I am toying with the idea of going out to Schoharie County, but a lot depends on the weather. I might take off Friday or might not. If it’s going to be hot out Friday, I could spend it at Mine Kill State Park Pool. I might meet a friend out there in Schoharie County. Not sure though. It would be nice to hit up the farm stands, do some fishing and camp up in Burnt Rossman. ๐Ÿ• But who knows, in a week from now, it will be summer vacation.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm with dusk at 8:31 pm.

East on a Hazy Day

July 9, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Get away day, at least after my eye exam ๐Ÿ‘€. I can see clearly now. At least as long as I don’t fail my exam. Need to pass it for my driver’s license. ๐Ÿš˜ Next Friday is Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ†. That’s why in two weeks I’m heading west to the Finger Lakes where I can find more sun in the evening. And good places to swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ on summer vacation. ๐Ÿ– Cloudy and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 pm.

I have a lot of my gear packed ๐Ÿ’ผ and I just have to get my personal stuff like deodorant and towels packed and coolers ready to go. Then I will be able to leave directly from the eye doctor to head up north. I am probably going to stay there until Tuesday working remote Monday and Tuesday in Spectulator. I’m thinking Piseco-Powley Road but I could change my mind as I’m thinking I haven’t done White House or Pumpkin Hollow in some time. โ›บ Not going to be a real nice weekend to spend at the Potholers and it would be nicer to be closer to Spectulator come Monday. I just don’t want to camp anywhere this weekend where I have cell service and all those obnoxious distractions. Also, where ever I stay needs to be well drained as it’s been so wet the past few days.

Supposedly the landlord fixed the clog in the sewer lateral toilet ๐Ÿšฝ although truth be told it wasn’t effecting my unit too much and any flooding never reached my unit. I don’t know if he actually had to do anything as my toilet drained fine by morning.

Today will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 78 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 11th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 1pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was humid. The high last year was 94 degrees. The record high of 103 was set in 1936.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 75 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 10 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers between 11pm and 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 63 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 6pm. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was very sticky. It got down to 74 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1963.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers between 1pm and 2pm, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 77 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 8th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 8am. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Today in 1850, U.S. President Zachary Taylor dies after eating raw fruit and iced milk; he is succeeded in office by Vice President Millard Fillmore. ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿฅค While the Weston Price foundation and the good ol boys who drink straight out of the bulk tank won’t agree, pasteurization has saved a lot of lives.

July 8, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Wet Thursday. ๐Ÿ’ฆ Next Thursday is Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚. Well, moo as you chew your cud. Rain showers and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Might have heard a clap of thunder โ›ˆ๏ธ earlier. Calm wind. The dew point is 62 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 8 pm.

I decided to catch the earlier bus ๐Ÿš downtown, as it’s kind of a rainy morning. ๐Ÿšฝ Landlord called and asked me to conserve water as he’s having trouble with the sewer lateral again, although I did take a 30 second shower before work ๐Ÿšฟ and decided I had to flush the toilet once because I didn’t want poop to be rotting in the toilet all day. It flushed fine when I did it this morning, but over the weekend I noticed the flushing was slow so I stopped throwing toilet paper in the bowl and used the plunger once or twice. Didn’t seem like a serious problem in my unit, but maybe downstream. I always wonder if it’s better to toss toilet paper in the toilet or wastebasket — probably if I had my own land unless I was on sewer, I’d probably keep a wastebasket next to toilet and do it like the Mexicans do — toss it and burn it with the other paper trash. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Hopefully my neighbor’s bathroom, downgrade, isn’t filling up with shit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ One time there was a plumbing back up and it flooded all the way back to my unit. It seems like my building had a lot of problems but I guess it’s a rental and it’s cheap. I do have to wonder with the pandemic or the landlord will sell out and rent go up but at least my lease is good through May 1st and then I can make alternate plans if necessary. At some point I should buy my own property, but then I’d have to maintain it, and that probably would mean I’d have to be a commuter and I couldn’t have the ease of taking the bus to work. ๐ŸšŒ

When I get into the office, I am going to do laps in the Plaza until 9 AM. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธNot raining hard now and maybe if it’s not raining much when I get downtown I’ll walk inside, otherwise I will walk outside and get some fresh air. The past few days at lunch time I’ve been doing laps in the plaza, because it’s been too hot to walk outside. That said, I got soaked yesterday running from the LOB to Smith Building after my afternoon walk. It was wet. ๐ŸŒง And then when I had a rain coat waiting for  the bus yesterday, there was no rain.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง High of 74 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 1pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 89 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1936.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.8° from the due south horizon (-1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:53 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:54 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 5 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 8pm, then rain and possibly a thunderstorm after 8pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 68 degrees at 3am. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 73 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1963.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 79. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I have my eye doctor’s appointment tomorrow, ๐Ÿ‘€ after which I will head up to Piseco-Powley Road for the weekend. Probably stay there through early Monday morning, then I’ll drive up to Spectulator and work for there until Tuesday. ๐Ÿ• Then Tuesday after work I’ll drive back home, stopping at the Guilderland Planning Board Meeting to raise concerns about another proposed development in Albany Pine Bush. ๐ŸŒฒ That said, it’s nice to take another real-weekend off, which I plan to be off the grid, do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ, reading, and no internet use, as I won’t have service up north. Also thinking of taking another long weekend the following weekend if it’s decent, ๐Ÿ“ด again with the phone off.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Cow Appreciation Day ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:04 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 86 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1997.

July 6, 2021 – Looking Ahead This Week

It looks like the upcoming week with be unstable and fairly cool but the dampness and humidity is going to be around through the week. The main reason why the dew point is going to be so high, is it’s going to be wet. The weekend though looks pretty nice, although a bit cool especially if I am planning to go to the Adirondacks. Starting to loose a bit of time in the evening as the month progresses.

Golden Rod

July 3, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Three weeks to Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Cloudy, rain showers and 57 degrees at the John Boyd Thacher State Park. โ˜๏ธ Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 11 am.

Not a super nice day but the Nature Bus ๐Ÿš is free and I wanted to get out of Delmar today for a few hours to do some hiking, nature observation and reading ๐Ÿ“–. If we get some rain, I figure there is always the patio I can wait out the rain showers with. ๐Ÿ’ง It doesn’t look like all day rain โ˜” but especially up north it would have been a rather miserable day. โ˜๏ธ Why stay home if you can catch a free bus to Thacher Park though?

Today will have a chance of showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 61 degrees at 6pm. 22 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 19th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 11am. Light north wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1911.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is 13 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 58 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 14 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 54 degrees at 4am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 56 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2020, we had thunderstorm in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 65 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1971.

Yesterday I got a stack of books ๐Ÿ“š out of the library, it’s nice that things are pretty much back to normal at the library – I can go down there and work inside the air conditioned library any of the normal times ๐Ÿ˜Ž and get my own books by browsing. I guess during the later part of the pandemic ๐Ÿ˜ท if you masked up you were allowed to browse books but they had all these requirements for masking and it wasn’t like you could sit down or dilly daly. Brought a personal book ๐Ÿ“™ from home to read up at the park, as I didn’t want to risk getting a library book wet should it rain. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

On this day in 1886, the New-York Tribune becomes the first newspaper to use a linotype machine, ๐Ÿ–ฅ eliminating typesetting by hand. ๐Ÿ“ฐ That was certainly good news for newspapers and I guess it reduced the price of typesetting any kind of book although computers are vastly better. ๐Ÿ“™

I am starting to regret a bit my decision to cut my phone plan back, ๐Ÿ“ฑ but I felt like I spent too much time playing on my phone, watching stupid YouTube of rednecks doing redneck shit. ๐Ÿ”ซ ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿšœ I also felt like I didn’t need the hot spot working more in the office these days as remote work ๐Ÿ’ป winds down. The smaller plan starts right before vacation and runs until August 20th and it’s irreversible at this point as it’s paid. ๐Ÿ“– But I want to read more books and stay off the internet more – or at least limit my personal internet use primarily to hours when I’m down at the library.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:24 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1941.
