January 29, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy 38th Birthday to Me ๐ŸŽ‰ ! I honestly don’t care, I think birthdays are stupid and egotistical. ๐ŸŽ‚ I am not gawd. Maybe I’ll celebrate my birthday of retirement, but even then I don’t care. Maybe I should be celebrating it more, I survived 2020, the year best described by a Phil Ochs lyrics in the Crucifixion, “It’s good to be alive when the eulogies are read.” It’s actually remarkable to think how many people I’ve known that over years died over the past year from the COVID. โšฐ God bless them. Doing a heck of a lot better then them, although I am feeling awful from allergies this morning. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ More antihistamine please. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

Kind of a chilly one, although the wind hasn’t been as strong as it was earlier. Clear and 4 degrees in Delmar, NY. Breezy, ๏ธ17 mph breeze from the northwest ๐ŸŒฌ . The current wind chill is -18. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒย  I still want to be brave and try to go for my morning walk, but only time will tell.๏ธ

Last night I felt terribly itchy and congested. ๐Ÿคข I think it is just allergies but I retired to bed early last night. This morning, after the walk I plan to take a shower before sitting down to work. I think while I was working on malfunctioning vacuum yesterday, it was blowing around a lot of dust and mold which triggered my allergies, making me absolutely miserable. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ The heat is kind of an all or nothing deal in my apartment.ย  โ™จ At least my apartment is warm this morning, but I’m hopeful that soon I’ll be able to have the windows open or at least get out more and get more fresh air. Today though that will be tough. ๐ŸŒฌ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 14 degrees at 2pm. 17 degrees below normal. But it can be even colderMaximum wind chill around -18 at 6am; Blustery, with a northwest wind 17 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 2002. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1990.โ„

I had some stuff come up yesterday, and it was cold, ๐ŸŒจ so I ended up not going to store at lunchtime.ย  Today I do plan to go to the store and maybe thereafter for a while at the library, but not long as it will be cold. It’s going to be tricky though if I want to go at lunchtime, because I have a 1 PM meeting. Maybe I’ll just take lunch after the meeting, in case I’m running a bit late from the store. Plus at 1 PM the stores are always so crowded. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ I also need to drop off my stimulus check at the bank, as that’s been burning a hole in my pocket for some time now, and it would be nice to earn all 5 cents of interest and at some point I’ll loose the check. ๐Ÿ’ต I am sure the bank will still be a zoo ๐Ÿ˜ as the inside teller is closed, so everybody will be trying to transact their business outside, and it will be difficult for my truck to make the turn.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 29.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-41.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:24 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (239ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (246ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:05 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 5:35 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:09 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 12 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be -5. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Breezy, 17 mph breeze โ›… from the northwest with gusts up to 28mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 0 degrees at 6am. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -13 at 5am; Northwest wind 8 to 15 mph. In 2020, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 17 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -13 at 6am; Northwest wind 8 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 32 degrees. The record high of 56 was set in 2013. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„ Typical average high isย  is 32 degrees.

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, โ˜€with a high near 20. Light north wind. No wind, that’s almost beach weather. Typical average high for Sunday is 32 degrees. And in a little over a week on the following Saturday February 6th, the average high is 33 — a typical day will be above freezing or maybe more then that as the climate normal are old at this point and the 1991-2020 normal won’t be out until July 1st, when everybody says aw shit. 5 weeks from now the average high is forty.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 50 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ When there is no hope, there is spring. Or so I tell myself. I just hate not having the windows open, or having the heat on. Honestly, I just don’t like being home. Normal winters I’d be working downtown, have the Empire State Plaza to walk in, and could go to the library after work. This panademic, while fun during the summer months, sucks during the winter.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 7:06 pm with dusk at 7:34 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2020, we had rain and temperatures between 51 and 38 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 2012.

December 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? First Hump Day of December, of course. Next Wednesday is Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ. Partly cloudy and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a south breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. More sun than the initial forecast predicted. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tonight around 1 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Nice enough morning for the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป which I had missed the past two days because of the weather and my inability to face ๐Ÿ˜” Monday morning. I heard that they are getting snow ๐ŸŒจ on the Tug Hill Plateau so I’m sure that Piseco Powley is done for the year. 2020 was a fun but odd year, and it kind of sucked that the southern end was closed due to the bridge being out. ๐ŸŒ‰ Remote work ๐Ÿ’ป from the Adirondacks was kind of fun though.

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow showers before 11am, then a chance of rain showers between 11am and 5pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers after 5pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 39 degrees at 11am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 6th. South wind 10 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 23 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.2 inches of snow fell back in 1949.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:46 am with sun having an altitude of 25.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (233ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 13 mph with gusts up to 23mph. Today will have 9 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 19 seconds over yesterday.

I am working on a series of hiker maps ๐Ÿ—บ that may become a feature of the blog, covering various long distance hiking trails in a series of pages on a PDF. The first series is going to be maps of the Long Path. I have designed the template but I need to get on the library wi-fi this afternoon to run the PDF as it requires the topographic maps from the national map to be used for the background.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming mostly clear โ˜, with a low of 29 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 26th. West wind 6 to 13 mph. In 2019, we had mist in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1976.

Not a lot of sun this weekend. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow before 1pm, then a chance of rain between 1pm and 4pm, then a chance of rain and snow after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 40 degrees.

Yesterday I was on Zillow looking at various properties in the mid west. ๐Ÿก Not because I’m planning to buy anything soon but I wanted to see how much farther my dollar ๐Ÿ’ต would go out there compared to locally. I don’t like the long and salt encrusted winters here but I’d like to get another decade here in New York State where the wages are good. My apartment is inexpensive, if a bit rusty, moldy and dirty. ๐Ÿท Says the boy ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿป interested in dairy and hog farming and kind of likes the smell of fermented silage ๐ŸŒฝ. Money looks good with the Dow at 30k. But most of that is just paper gains, and the market will most certainly come down ๐Ÿ“‰ in the coming years.

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1966.

November 18, 2020 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? A frigid Hump Day in Biden’s America, of course. ๐Ÿซ I bet camel teats are warm this time of year. ๐Ÿฅ› Three weeks to Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ. Dark times ahead at least for a few weeks. By Inauguration Day though, sunset will be around 5 pm again. Mostly sunny and 24 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 1 pm. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Kind of a cold winters morning โ„ for my mornings walk. Playing California Dreaming as I go for my walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. That wind ๐Ÿƒ is pretty chilly but the sun feels nice. ๐ŸŒ  I didn’t do my walk last night because it was pretty cold and damp out but today with the sun is a lot more reasonable. โ™จ Heat is on in my apartment and it’s nice and warm and comfortable.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 23rd. Northwest wind 10 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1980.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 28ยฐ from the due south horizon (-42.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:49 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:31 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the south-southwest (206ยฐ) at an altitude of 19ยฐ from the horizon, 234,230 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:36 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 30 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 58 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 20 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 18th. Maximum wind chill around 18 at 6pm; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm. In 2019, we had light snow. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 12 occurred back in 1972.

Definitely much warmer for the weekend ๐ŸŒฅSaturday, partly sunny, with a high near 51. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees.

I decided this weekend to stay in town ๐Ÿก just because I think it’s going to be cloudy and I think the weekend after Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ will be nicer and it has the potential to be a three day weekend.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1966.

April 6, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Back to work from home. It in my case the library and Five Rivers. I expect to be a lot busier this week. ๐Ÿ’ผ Three weeks to Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ. Mostly sunny and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. You might say it’s a pretty pleasant day and it’s going to be quite nice later on. I am going to try to work outside as much as possible — either in my backyard or later on at Five Rivers. After work I’ll go for a nice walk. Hopefully the ground won’t be too wet as my boots are kind of leaky and the new ones have yet to ship.๐Ÿ‘ข

This morning I plan to go to the grocery store ๐Ÿ› and fill up my pantry. Just Hannaford today. Plus go to the laundromat. I can probably start my day using the laptop ๐Ÿ’ป and later on go home and work from home until lunchtime and then go out to Five Rivers to work in the afternoon shift, where I will have unlimited library internet and I won’t have to pay for electricity, as the solar well will be doing all of the work.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 23rd. Northwest wind 7 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1921. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1982.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-16.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:50 pm with the sun in the west (274ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (280ยฐ) starting at 7:25 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 7:56 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Worm Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (106ยฐ) at an altitude of 21ยฐ from the horizon, 226,328 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:31 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. Should be a great moon lit night, not too cold. Kind of wish I had a case of beer to drink out back. ๐Ÿป Like some nice cold Carona with lime. Maybe for the weekend? Today will have 12 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 36 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 11th. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of 13 occurred back in 1982.

I activated the new blog theme for now, but I might have to pull it down if I find further bugs. The mobile version needs some work, but I will work with what I have for now, โœ and make improvements on an ongoing basis. We will see. So far I’m happy with the new version but it’s quick enough switch back. I really like the full screen photos but I know the style sheet needs to be reworked for mobile ๐Ÿ“ฑ devices.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 50. Easter, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 55. Chance of precipitation is 30%. ๐Ÿฐ Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees.

The long weekend sounds nice but cool for April ๐Ÿƒ but it doesn’t seem like much snow is left – and cold for April is a relative thing – it means the weather will feel more like early November weather then early spring. โ›บ If I were to camp, definitely would bring the heater but probably not pitch the tent for hot tenting. Long sleeve weather and the vest as nights would probably drop down into the twenties. Most of April looks that way – it seems like in recent years that April has been quite cool following mild winters. โ›„ We could still get another snow storm but at this point I think it’s unlikely. Of course, staying home ๐Ÿก would save money ๐Ÿ’ต and make the internet trolls happy. ๐Ÿ‘ผ I’ve blocked most of them on Facebook.

That meme I shared on Facebook and the blog about wearing preg testing gloves to pump gas โ›ฝ really kind of cracked me up. ๐Ÿฎ I bet for plastic gloves they aren’t that cheap. But I guess it’s more sanitary for the cow if your going to ram your hand up their anus to feel if they have a baby ๐Ÿ‘ถ to wear a glove. I’m sure the real old time cowboys never did.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Arbor Day ๐ŸŒณ when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 50 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962. Late April doesn’t seem that far away but to think May is just around the corner is a bit more shocking in my book ๐Ÿ“™.

Farm Along Ostelic River

January 14, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I walked down to the library for a while to return my books ๐Ÿ“š. I was going to work on the John Wolcott project but I’ve had little ambition to do that much data entry after a busy day at work. ๐Ÿ“‡ He’s out of the hospital and feeling better, I’ll be back over on Friday. I really think I want to spend time cleaning up the existing sorted files ๐Ÿ“‚ and getting better labels ๐Ÿ”– on the folders. Rode the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ for a few minutes but stopped as my neighbor came home and lately it’s been quite squeaky. I’m hoping I can lubricate and tighten it up and get rid of the noise. It is pretty old and hardly a quiet machine at this point.

Neighbors have a candle burning in their window as I go to bed. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๏ธ I sure hope they’re keeping an eye on it ๐Ÿ‘€ and not falling asleep with it at still burning ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I actually am going to make sure that I know where my wallet is and laptop bag before bed in case my neighbor’s place catches fire. ๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ Its not directly connected to my building but if it caught fire, there is a risk of fire brands hitting my building so I would have to evacuate. I am all for using fire in a controlled way – its great for restoring habitats, heating buildings, cooking food and disposing of waste in rural areas – but it’s such a menace especially in the cities. ๐ŸŒ‡ I’m sure it will be fine or so I hope.

Tonight will have a chance of drizzle or light rain before 11pm, then a slight chance of drizzle between 11pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 35 degrees at 6am. 21 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 8th. South wind 7 to 13 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 10 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1957.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon. The darkest hour is at 12:05 am, followed by dawn at 6:53 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:24 am in the east-southeast (119ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 19 seconds. Sunrise is 24 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:08 am with sun in the southeast (127ยฐ) at an altitude of 6ยฐ. Tonight will have 14 hours and 37 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 35 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 1pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 12th. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. Should be a very pleasant day. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 65 was set in 1995. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

It wasn’t a bad day at work, meeting went well. ๐Ÿ’ผ Busy today but I got another report finalized on my end of things. Making good progress. I got a nice complement from my boss to a client. Busy but so drab in that windowless office ๐Ÿข with those cool white florescent bulbs. But I’m getting stuff done, getting results for clients.

I got bumped by a car ๐Ÿš™ in a crosswalk today ๐Ÿ’ฅbut I wasn’t injured. I thought I made eye contact ๐Ÿ‘€ with the driver but I was kind of day dreaming and neither of us were looking. I bumped my hand into the hood of his truck but I never hit the bumper and didn’t do any damage. Got to be more careful crossing the streets. I haven’t had a close call like that in years – once before something similar happened in college – but I know it’s definitely possible to get in a much worse accident then getting brushed by a car. ๐Ÿšถ Drivers just don’t pay attention. Neither do I at times when I say dream. ๐Ÿ’ญ Pine Busher Lynne Jackson and bicycle activist Burt Shou has been warning โš  me about this for years.

In my suit ๐Ÿ‘”I do see myself getting old and gray in parts and with only a little over 3 years until I’m forty years old I really should try to understand myself and my future better. ๐Ÿ‘ด Still researching counseling services. I should just make an appointment and its only $25. I don’t like it, I don’t have to go back. But I could become a better person. ๐Ÿ‘ช It’s great to save for my future but I really should figure out if I should be looking to do other things in the meantime. Old age creeps up suddenly and I don’t want to be at a place where I can no longer do the things I want to do, like moving out west to rural town, my off grid property or hobby farm. ๐Ÿšœ Watching YouTube videos has me constantly thinking about all the other way people live and put food on their table. Some options will never be open to me, but if I have a better plan and more confidence I can open new doors for my future. ๐ŸšชI wish I could walk into a room, have a firm hand shake and be more charismatic and not a reserved somewhat crude hillbilly in a suit.

As I mentioned earlier, Iowa always seems like a fun state but not a lot of public land and land there can be super expensive due to amazing soils. ๐ŸŒฝ I follow Iowa Dairy Boys and a few other farm channels on the YouTube ๐Ÿฎ and while some of the farming isn’t that different than here in New York with old tie stall barns, they also have some really big and very fertile fields that are uncommon except for a few deep valleys in New York like the Genesee Valley of Western NY. But those are tiny in comparison to the vast fertile Iowa prarie. They also get quite a bit of snow and cold in Iowa – they’re winters are cooler than New York but hotter on summer due to the lack of moderating Atlantic Ocean. I also follow an off gridder in a shed to home ๐Ÿก in Iowa, as you might guess in a rural state like that many of rural areas are reasonably laid back on zoning and codes. I do love ๐Ÿ˜ learning about how those farm families fight the forces of nature and the market to scratch together a living often on the margins. They might have a lot of investment in their land and operations but even in Iowa are often struggling to make ends meet.

In four weeks on February 11 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (251ยฐ) at 5:21 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 47 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 33 and 18 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 17 degrees. The record high of 59 degrees was set back in 1981.

Looking ahead, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 4 weeks, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is a month away, National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 5 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 9 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 12 weeks, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is in 16 weeks, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 5 months, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 23 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 42 weeks.

Winter Time.

๏ปฟWinter is a long cold time here in the frigid Northeastern United States. After you few years spent in the winter here, you can see why people are moving out of New York left and right โ€“ itโ€™s the winters plus the unfriendly enforcement-first culture that dominates politics. Many cold blustery days, road salt encrusting everything, high heating bills, and slippery sidewalks for months on end. Fortunately, climate change has made the winters a bit less severe but they arenโ€™t going away tomorrow.

Cold Road

I plan to tough it through another winter. I have warm gear, and I donโ€™t mind winter camping, but the snow makes it hard to be back to the remote campsites I like to camp in the winter. Colder temperatures are tough on all the gear, and the the many gray and short days of winter arenโ€™t much fun. Itโ€™s not too bad in the sense that itโ€™s often one of the busiest times of year at work for me, so I can focus on the long days at work, and then relax on the weekends at home, just going for short walks down to the library or other places.

 Cold

Staying close to home, I tend to save more money in the winter then the summer, despite the higher heating bills. I try to get keep the heat down low in the winter, so it really only adds $40-50 to my utility bills, which is easily offset by not taking trips and burning through gasoline, food and supplies. I try to live fairly modestly in the winter, so I can have enough money saved up for trips come the summer. Nothing beats a hot weekend out at the potholers or other Adirondack swimming hole.

 Cold Afternoon

The cold and blowing snow will certainly come to an end. Theyโ€™ll stop spreading salt on the roads, the ice will melt. And maybe it will it be an early spring. One can hope.

It seems summer has all but bit the bucket, despite the muggy weather tonight

September 18, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ†! Next Wednesday has More Night then Day ๐Ÿ€ผ๓“€ฎ Winters coming. By for now, mostly sunny and 49 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind. โ˜€ Not a bad autumn morning, a few hints of color in the city. Enjoyed my walk ๐Ÿšถ down to the express bus ๐Ÿš.

Tonight is the Save the Pine Bush Dinner ๐Ÿฒ and it should be a good one. County Legislator Doug Bullock will be speaking. 6 pm at the West Presbyterian Church โ›ช downtown. Bird ๐Ÿฆ Hike is on Saturday at 8 am.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 47 at 10am. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1891.

The sun will set at 7:00 pm with dusk around 7:28 pm, which is one minute and 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 62 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 5th. Light and variable wind. Almost warrants closing my windows before bed but if it’s cold in my apartment come morning I’ll just have a hot cup of coffee. โ˜• 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1959.

Awesome weekend on tap, with temperatures running 12 degrees above normal. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 61 at 4pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 60 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

It should be a great weekend for the Pine Bush Hike ๐ŸŒฒand a visit to the potholers. Only going away for one day this weekend but I might go away for two nights if the weather is good next weekend. The following weekend it’s down to West Virginia ๐Ÿ‚ for my road trip.

I think this weekend I’ll need to replace my boots ๐Ÿ‘ข as now they are really falling apart. I might do that on Thursday evening and maybe also get a new camp chair plus food for camping on Saturday. ๐Ÿฃ

As previously noted, next Wednesday is More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 6:48 pm with dusk at 7:16 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain and temperatures between 63 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 2017.

Earlier today I posted a graph of the sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ times. ๐Ÿ“Š Definitely every evening now when I leave work the sun angle has dropped dramatically. At least this year with my autumn road trip planned a week earlier then normal, the nights will be a little longer. But I still expect most mornings on vacation to be getting up before dawn so I can fully enjoy the day before I have to return to camp before darkness. ๐ŸŒƒ Coffee โ˜• at camp โ›บ is always good on a cold morning.
