A very pleasant summer morning ๐ŸŒ…

Cool enough this morning to be reminded of what fall feels like without the humidity and wildfire smoke mugging you the moment you step outside. That said, autumn is just around the corner as is August. It will come quickly come August 8th when I’m back from summer vacation, and I loose all the sunlight in the evening as I’ll be back farther east.

Good morning! Mostly clear ๐ŸŒ… and 61 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees.

Out walking ๐Ÿšถ at 6:15 am which probably isn’t good idea as I didn’t get to bed until much too late after the late return from the hike last night, which I followed by sitting out back for a while and then running inside, taking a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and checking carefully for ticks before bed ๐Ÿ›. A hard boiled egg ๐Ÿฅš and some grapes ๐Ÿ‡ for protein and sugar before the morning walk. Whole grain oatmeal with fresh blueberries and black berries with more black coffee after the morning walk.๐Ÿซ๐Ÿ“ Plus maybe some carrots ๐Ÿฅ• for a fiber boost.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 85 degrees at 4pm. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 10am. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was sticky. The high last year was 97 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1991.

Finally finished my bike build. ๐Ÿšฒ I’m much happier with Blackie now that I got all the accessories installed except the heavy gauge u-lock holder ๐Ÿ”’ because I’m debating if I should mountain on the frame or on the rack, for better balance center and axle wise versus blocking the location for future additional water storage unit under bike lights for safer nighttime riding for finding potholes and rough terrain on the trail. The waterproof phone holder is great with the Zeopoxa Cycling app which not only tells me my speed but also distanced traveled and provides a map of my route. And every mile it barks out how many miles traveled, average speed and calories burnt. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

That said, I think the feature I like the most about my bicycle is the 13×15 crate I have mounted on my bike rack, now with a MIK adapter for quick release so I can load the box when it’s not on the bicycle or take off for transit on the bus or in my truck. ๐Ÿงบ Or what riding in real rough country or greater efficiency. It’s great, you just throw whatever gear you want in it and go. Hammock, backpack, water, lunch, tools, etc. Also makes a good grocery carrier for heading home from the store. ๐Ÿช Detach the crate, load in the store and I never have to worry buying too much groceries to haul home. Probably use it tonight for that purpose. Toss in the Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š and have tunes ๐ŸŽถ and podcasts to listen to plenty loud over the roar of traffic. Ended up using six plastic cable zip ties to secure the basket to the MIK adapter, it just worked better than bolts and washee with my particular crate. The crate is the weakest link, not the twist ties but I feel confident it could safely carry 20-30 lb of supplies or groceries. ๐Ÿ While the rack is rated for 30 kg or 66 lb, the mount is 20 kg or 44 lb, I think the lightweight crate I installed probably couldn’t handle that much. But I don’t often get juice or milk at the grocery store — milk but usually at Stewarts where I walk, and only a gallon at most of the time. Bicycle water bottle holders are inexpensive, but I’m not sure the advantage over just tossing the water in the back. Maybe for long trips I’d want additional water closer to the front axle.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-2.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:47 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (300ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 9:01 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (275ยฐ) at an altitude of 15ยฐ from the horizon, 251,882 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:44 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 76 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 55 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Well that certainly was an interesting evening hiking in the Norman’s Kill Ravine Preserve. ๐Ÿšถ The loop trail was just longer than I expected and the terrain was more rugged then I would expect for suburban Delmar. Not even all that exciting, just a lot of ridges and swamps along a flatwater, very muddy from the recent rain โ˜”. I think the trails are a bit rougher than I would want to take my new mountain bike on but might walk them again come the autumn when things are colorful and the views are better. ๐Ÿ‚

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 67 degrees at 4am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 4am. South wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 72 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1974.

I am thinking tonight maybe of checking out another nature preserve along the Normans Kill, the Normans Kill Preserve behind the Justice Center on Normans Kill Boulevard next to Delaware Plaza. ๐Ÿธ๐ŸŒธ This preserve looks much more interesting then Normans Kill Ravines Preserve, and is much smaller / quicker hike, though a slightly longer bus ride. I was thinking I could go there and then go grocery shopping for the weekend thereafter, all using my bicycle. ๐Ÿšด

On this day in 1969, Apollo 11’s crew successfully makes the first landing on the Moon ๐ŸŒ• in the Sea of Tranquility. Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to walk on the Moon, well at least in England. Us Americans would get to watch it the next day. ๐Ÿ“บ Funny how time zones work. The world conquered the moon, returned a half dozen times or so and got bored and gave up visiting the moon only three years later. ๐ŸŒŽ Worldly problems like Vietnam, pollution and inflation somehow seemed more important than visiting the moon. I guess they were, but to give up so quickly after a goal ๐Ÿฅ… was reached seems like a major societal cop out.

Continues to be a nice weekend on tap. โ˜บ That said, the muggers will return after the rain tonight into tomorrow. Saturday, isolated showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. West wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 8am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 63 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

The plan continues to be to head out of town for the weekend. ๐Ÿ• I am thinking early Saturday morning through mid-day Monday, after the rain stops. I am leaning towards Catskill Scenic Trail on Saturday morning from Grand Gorge to Stamford, then swim in Mine Kill State Park, then Sunday maybe mountain bike around Burnt-Rossman Hills State Forest truck trails. ๐Ÿšด I do want to get Shaul’s too, I haven’t decided if that will be Saturday or Sunday. ๐ŸŒถ Probably Sunday as Shaul’s closes at 5 PM. โŒ› Maybe that could be another pool and bicycle day. ๐ŸŠ Biking along NY 30 from the Blenhiem Bridge and maybe doing another afternoon at Mine Kill Pool could be good for Sunday, even though I’d rather hang out at camp for the day and not have to take down camp or at least lock things up, and then have the fun of getting out of that rough site and the bumpy roads. But whatever. Then maybe more of the Catskill Scenic Trail on Monday morning, such as Stamford south to Bloomville. ๐Ÿฎ ๐ŸŠ And another swim before heading out to the folks house. ๐Ÿ– Truth is I don’t want to get home too late on Monday as I need to pack for summer vacation like the next day.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Campfire Day ๐Ÿ”ฅ when the sun will be setting at 8:15 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. On that day in 2022, we had hot, mostly sunny and temperatures between 90 and 64 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 83 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1975.

Across Cedar River Flow

April 3, 2023 Morning

21 ¼ miles and the cycle starts again ๐Ÿšถ

I have to admit that was a pretty good walk yesterday, but it’s a new day, and I’m out walking this morning though with work — it won’t be a twenty mile day.

Good morning! Yeap, Monday’s come back around again. Mostly clear ๐ŸŒ… and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ Kind of a cold start to the morning but it won’t last now that’s it Aprilp. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 61 degrees at 3pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 18th. South wind 6 to 11 mph increasing to 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1981. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

I like all that sunlight streaming into my office ๐Ÿข in the morning though I do miss those days of the pandemic working remotely ๐Ÿ’ป on what will be such a nice day come midday. Today would be such a nice day to be working in the sun with the windows down in my truck.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 52.6° from the due south horizon (-18.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:46 pm with the sun in the west (272°).

Yesterday after the laundromat actually while drying, I stocked up on groceries. ๐Ÿ One of the benefits of eating healthier is you mostly just walk the outside aisles which it makes it quicker. I ran into one of the executives from my office there but I don’t think she knows me well because I was kind of sweaty or shaved and dirty from the walk and the fact that I hadn’t showered since Friday. As I like to say, all my heroes burn their own trash and smell a little like cow shit. ๐Ÿฎ I don’t rush out to wash clothes if they’re not dirty or I’m going to some kind of social event.

The sunset is in the west (278°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:23 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:51 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (110°) at an altitude of 31° from the horizon, 248,872 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:26 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 57 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 11 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 54 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over today.

I wonder if the potential for rain this evening ๐ŸŒƒ will interfere with my walk. Maybe though working late tonight will be a bigger interference though I’m inclined to think they’ll pass an extender and tonight won’t be an all nighter at work.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly between 11pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 43 degrees at 6am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 30th. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1954.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 56. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 35 at 9pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees.

As previously noted, next Monday is 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 7:32 pm with dusk at 8:00 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 49 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

Fort Crown Point

February 14, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Valentines Day. โ™ฅ Finally warm and bright enough to walk at 6:15. I think it’s the first time in months. But the days are getting longer. It’s a nice dawn, with a declining half ๐ŸŒ— moon above. Not sure if it will be the best sunrise ever though due to the clouds in the east.

Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Breezy, ๏ธ18 mph breeze from the northwest ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 28 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. But it’s a fairly warm breeze by February standards. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 3 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It’s nice to get out early, it tends to better equalize the time in the morning ๐Ÿฅš to have breakfast and get my clothes ironed before work and shower ๐Ÿšฟ. Having a single pool of time โŒš just means if one step runs longer I don’t fall behind on my SC especially as the express leaves about 15 minutes before the local.

Today will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ˜, with a high of 47 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 20th. Northwest wind 13 to 18 mph decreasing to 7 to 12 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 28 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1946. 23.5 inches of snow fell back in 1914.โ„

Going to be a nice day, something like the first day of calendar spring. ๐ŸŒท But then again that’s only a month away and it’s been quite mild. Too much sunlight in the morning means I have to draw the shades but later in the afternoon the sun is nice. Not sure if I’ll get out at five to take the express home but so be it.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:11 pm with sun having an altitude of 34.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-36.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:46 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (246ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west-southwest (253ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 5:54 pm, which is one minute and 18 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:28 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 37 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over today..

Today is pay day which is nice ๐Ÿ’ต as I think my credit card bill is due soon ๐Ÿ’ณ and it’s been higher with inflation and the many trips that I made this year. Probably also need to start saving for my tax bill and car insurance ๐Ÿš™ which will be another chunk of change. But it looks like until Friday my heat will be off which is good.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 32 degrees at 11pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 2nd. Light and variable wind becoming south 6 to 11 mph after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1943.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, sunny, with a high near 38. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 47. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

Fairly mild but maybe cloudy โ›… for the second half of the weekend. I guess it would be kind of nice to get out of town this weekend. โ›บ There isn’t a lot of snow outside of the Adirondacks so trails might be muddy especially after Thursdays rain.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 5:44 pm with dusk at 6:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 1903.

 Bitting

Daily Update – March 14, 2022

Good morning! The Monday after daylight savings time has come back around again. ๐ŸŒ…

With the clouds it seems darker than yesterday. โ˜๏ธ But it’s nice with so much extra daylight in the evening. For a day supposed to reach the fifties by evening, the morning is awful cool. Not spring yet.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 6 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

Overcast and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Yesterday I went skiing ๐ŸŽฟ at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for a while but by midday the snow wasn’t that great. Then I went out to the folks house ๐Ÿ‘ช for cabbage and corned beef ๐Ÿ€ and skied a bunch more with the dog ๐Ÿถ out back.

It’s nice having that extra sunlight in the evening. ๐ŸŒ‡ I went for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ with still some daylight to spare and did not have to drive home in the dark. ๐ŸŒƒ Looking forward to when I can go down to the park ๐Ÿž again with a book ๐Ÿ“™. Had the library not been closed on Saturday due to the snow storm I probably would have gone there. I’ll probably go more now that they’ve dropped the muzzle mandate ๐Ÿ˜ท as I don’t mind wearing a mask but not when I’m sitting down and working.

I don’t mind wearing the muzzle in public places ๐Ÿ˜ท like crowded elevators or buses but not while sitting down and working. I’m so used to at this point just wearing the muzzle and boiling then in soapy water ๐Ÿ’ฆ every Sunday afternoon. It just becomes routine and if it keeps me from getting the COVID or a cold it’s worth it.

Besides the GIS class I’ve been taking ๐Ÿ—บ, I’ve been lately doing a map atlas a day I post on Facebook. It’s fun because it gets me looking for interesting sources of map data each day and new techniques for presenting information. ๐ŸŒŽ There is a lot you can do with a combination of R programming language and QGIS with a python thrown in. Using R often makes complicated map joins quick.

Replaced the Microsoft building footprints with a combination of the NYSERDA building footprints and the NYC planning department footprints on my PostGIS database on my laptop. ๐Ÿข The Microsoft building footprints aren’t bad and are far more extensive in rural areas than what was available in OpenStreetMap but had a lot of problems accurately displaying urban buildings. Then again, Microsoft building footprints was generated with machine learning while NYSERDA checked them against source photography. ๐Ÿ”Ž

Tomorrow I’ll probably wash my truck ๐Ÿ›ป and go store for suppliers. ๐Ÿ Lots of little things I need – shoe rubber cement for fixing my ski ๐ŸŽฟ boots again, and fixing the trash can lid, toilet ๐Ÿšฝ cleaner and drain solvent to improve the bath ๐Ÿ›€ drain. Cheese ๐Ÿง€ as I got to have my dairy ๐Ÿฎ and more frozen fruit. ๐Ÿ“ I have to work late tonight so it won’t happen today but going to be a mild week for a car wash. Then some point next month I’ll have to sand and paint over the rust again on Big Red.

April 19, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. It’s Earth Week, a day where they celebrate spring tillage ๐Ÿšœ and that earthy smell of freshly tiled earth, diesel smoke and cow manure. ๐Ÿ’ฉ And rolling coal, ๐Ÿ›ป along with politicians lying about how they plan to save the earth ๐ŸŒŽ by allowing polluters to pollute more and covering the earth with cadmium-infused glass. ๐Ÿญ Four weeks to Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ. June is dairy month, although we reach the 70s by mid-May, although the cows like that. Partly sunny and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Cold start to the morning ๐ŸŒ… although that’s kind of my fault as I like sleeping with the windows open, so it feels more like January in my apartment then late April. But that’s fine, I’m enjoying my morning walk before work. ๐ŸšถI just sleep so much better with the windows open ๐Ÿ”ณ breathing in the fresh air and diesel smoke. Lol. I remember when I had that neighbor with that big throaty diesel that would rumble each morning before he left for his construction ๐Ÿšง worker ๐Ÿ‘ท job. Basically truck porn ๐Ÿ›ป. I did sleep like a baby so no complaints there. ๐Ÿ‘ถ Probably because I whine so much there days on the blog.

Today will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 25th. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 67 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1976. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1983.โ„

Such a nice morning โ˜€ that I really should work down at library today ๐Ÿ–ฅ but I don’t think the nice weather is expected to last much longer into the afternoon with rain โ˜” showers pushing in. I have fair amount of bandwidth to use up by Friday so it’s not really necessary. At least wherever I work — at least for the morning, I can enjoy the fresh air and sunlight.

I keep watching for changes to bus schedules ๐Ÿš as an early indicator when to when work will be returning to downtown. ๐ŸšI feel like they will be restoring commuter service about the time they reopen the state buildings downtown ๐Ÿข. Still the park and ride sits abandoned but maintained in pristine condition 13 months into the pandemic. At this point, like so many people I have very mixed emotions about returning back to the downtown office. ๐Ÿ™ After all we’ve built such a remote work ๐Ÿ’ป infrastructure. ๐Ÿ’‰ Come a week from Wednesday, it will be two weeks since my last COVID-19 shot so I am pretty unlikely to pick up COVID, at least not severe COVID-19, although I’m sure it will be many more months of mask wearing ๐Ÿ˜ท at least on public transit and in places where people can’t keep 6 feet apart.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-12.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:04 pm with the sun in the west (280ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (286ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:42 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 8:11 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (221ยฐ) at an altitude of 68ยฐ from the horizon, 242,820 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:48 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 58 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Cut my hair ๐Ÿ’‡๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and sideburns yesterday, as I wanted to be cooler and cleaner with summer coming around. I have that hair trimmer which works pretty good job. The hat fits better ๐Ÿงข and the hair won’t get so matted with mud and sweat up at camp. โ›บ

Been continuing to monitor my bank accounts ๐Ÿ’ณ to watch for any fraudulent activity but I don’t see any but I’m hoping that those attempted $1 charges drop off it and the problem is over. I don’t want to have to order yet another card from the bank. I really can’t figure out what happened, as I’ve not done any Internet or phone purchases, and everything else has been dip-style purchases with the secure chip that doesn’t pass your credit card number through the machine. Maybe I have to tape something over card number from watching cameras, or I guess something could have read the strip even on the dip machine. ๐Ÿคช PARANOIA! I just hate dealing with coins ๐Ÿ’ต and exact change, after all these years of swipes.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 42 degrees at 3am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 28th. Should be a decent evening once the rain showers pass this afternoon. South wind around 5 mph. In 2020, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1875.

Weekend forecast looks pretty decent for late April. โ˜บ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 38 at 8pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 57. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

I really think this will be the weekend I make it to the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ• It certainly might be a nice weekend up north. I might then head out to Central New York in the following weeks, just because there isn’t as likely to have black flies every where. Depending on the status of remote work come May, I might go out there for a week. I think working down by Seneca Lake with my laptop could be quiet pleasant, doing some camping up in the National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒ I know, just wishful thinking. But I spent a lot of time last summer working from shore of Lake Pleasant and that dock on Sacanadaga Riverwalk. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Still undecided if I will drive up on Friday or Saturday. I noticed they’ve raised the price on pre-treated safe and legal firewood at Stewarts, but maybe I can find a pallet in town I can chop up and burn, and use my magnet to pick out any nails from the fire pit. ๐Ÿ”ฅ ๐Ÿงฒ

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ when the sun will be setting at 8:13 pm with dusk at 8:45 pm. By then the greenies’ burn ban will be over, so when you do your clean outs in country, make sure to pile enough pallets and try not to burn too much noxious rubber or PVC products. ๐Ÿ”ฅ How much a different world it could have been had not that redneck been burning garbage upwind of a former Governor and high-price John’s country home in Columbia County. ๐Ÿ›ข On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 92 back in 2017.

Mountains Fade Away

November 19, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Cold Thursday. โ„ Next Thursday is Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ. Both regular season and Thanksgiving are late this year sure to the way that the calendar falls. Partly sunny and 21 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒ… There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 9. Things will start to thaw out at around 10 am.๐ŸŒก๏ธ

It doesn’t seem that cold outside but I left the heat turned up a bit before bed ๐Ÿ› and this year it seems to be working better than in years past. โ™จ Of course it’s not really that cold out. The truck started up nice and easily this morning — now that the leaves are off the trees, the solar panel is dumping all the extra sunlight not needed for the battery bank into the starting battery.

Up early this morning as I have to run back to the shop ๐Ÿ”ง now that they have the stickers in to finish up the state inspection. But first I need to get fuel โ›ฝ and then I’ll probably work down at the library for a bit depending on how cold it is once the sun is up. Might not be too bad with the bright sun โ˜€ expected for most of the day. It will be nice when I have my phone set up as a hot spot at home ๐Ÿก although I’m going to wait another month for that. I’ve been reading ๐Ÿ“– up on the fine print but I think it will work well enough for me if I’m a bit careful with my data use. It seems like a really good deal all together, and offers the flexibility I need — I’d rather do it the old way walking down to the library or park after work once the panademic is over.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. South wind 6 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1921. 4.2 inches of snow fell back in 1914.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 27.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (236ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 4:59 pm, which is 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (193ยฐ) at an altitude of 23ยฐ from the horizon, 237,066 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:36 pm. Sunday looks cloudy but Saturday should be nice. ๐Ÿ˜€ Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 49. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. Sunday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees.

Probably this weekend will be like other recent ones. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป Five Rivers walk on Saturday and out to the folks house on Sunday. That’s fine I’m saving money by staying home, bidding my time until summer returns again. ๐Ÿ– I am sure it’s not that long until the black flies return.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 52 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.

August 29, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and damp around 70 degrees on Delmar. โ˜๏ธ There is a west breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

Not a super nice day so I stayed home ๐Ÿก and read and worked on a variety of little projects. I wanted to go for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป but the threat of rain was much too high. Tomorrow I’ll get out hiking. Put together some new maps ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธand stuff for the blog, was reading another book ๐Ÿ“™ about homesteading. ๐Ÿ Cheeses and dairy science is fascinating stuff ๐Ÿง€ – minor changes in processing milk ๐Ÿฅ› can create vastly different effects products or more likely ruin it entirely.

I finally baked up that cookie mix ๐Ÿชthat expired in April. Good peanut ๐Ÿฅœ butter cookies that I bought last fall for my West Virginia trip but never eat. ๐Ÿ˜‹ I figured I better eat it before the mice get in an chew holes in the packaging.๐ŸIt’s been a bad year for mice in the woods – something people were talking about yesterday on Facebook and I noticed we’re bad both in the Finger Lakes and Piseco Powley Road.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 67 at 9pm. West wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1982.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 90% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (156ยฐ) at an altitude of 21ยฐ from the horizon, some 239,388 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by February 27th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 5:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:19 am in the east-northeast (77ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:56 am with sun in the east (83ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 44 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 7am. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1953. The great Heat Wave of 1953.

Should be a nice autumn like day. ๐Ÿ‚ Nice change from the humidity and stormy weather today. I am thinking of doing some hiking and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at Partridge Run tomorrow. Should be a great day to spend outdoors but maybe a bit chilly by the time I go out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ But then again, Tuesday is September. Summer has quickly bit the dust.

I get so tired of hearing so many police ๐Ÿšจ sirens lately. The past few months they really have been abusing them it seems. For a while they were relatively quiet, tapping the sirens only briefly at the traffic light ๐Ÿšฆ to warn motorists but lately it’s been non-stop and it’s annoying. That and the super throaty motorcycles and trucks ๐Ÿ. Maybe I’m noticing it more this year as I’m home all of the time I’m not in the woods enjoying the quiet. ๐Ÿคซ

I am planning my next trip after Labor Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ‚ I’ll have to get out my blaze orange and gun cleaned up at that point. I’m thinking the Spectulator Area most likely especially if I’m planning several weekdays because the library is a pleasant place to work for Zoom Meetings. After October 1st I might camp and work from a combination of Stoney Pond State Forest and Charles Baker. โ›บ I can probably get Wi-Fi at the Cazenovia and Hamilton libraries out there for Zoom. Remote work has its benefits. ๐Ÿ’ปNo permit is needed for Stoney Pond State Forest after October 1st and it’s unlikely I’ll see anyone there except maybe a grizzled old hunter. ๐ŸŽซ Fishing in Nelson Swamp is a lot of fun too.

I really enjoy reading and looking at pictures of folks off grid properties on the Facebook. ๐Ÿก I just really like the simple and the small with lots of land in remote country. Some folks are really fancy or big builders but that certainly aint me. Some are into art work and making things pretty but I’m fine with chipboard for walls. The less you have, the less to spend money on, the less to break or have to throw away regularly. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

I’ve considered doing a trip in October to the Finger Lakes ๐Ÿ’ป and remote working from there but I have concerns about the length of day and having enough sunlight then to keep things charged and the long trip back to Albany after hours should something break that I can’t continue to work from there likedead fuse, inverter or other problems with the solar system which I couldn’t fix in the field. โฌ› It would be fun though to enjoy the leaves, ๐Ÿ hunt before 9 AM ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฆƒand then work the rest of the day from camp but maybe exhausting to boot. At the National Forest you can camp for two weeks in one site, no permits required.

I also don’t want to put on too many miles or break shit in my truck ๐Ÿ”งbefore the state inspection in November. Since addressing the tire wear issue on the truck in June things have been a lot better at slowing the wear and I’m not concerned about this year’s inspection but I also don’t want to have any kind of costly repairs this autumn if possible. ๐Ÿ”ฉ

In four weeks on September 26 the sun will be setting in the west (269ยฐ) at 6:45 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 49 minutes and 15 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 69 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 68 and 47 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 7 weeks, Halloween ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ and the Blue Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 9 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 13 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 14 weeks, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 17 weeks, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 4 months, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 19 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 21 weeks, 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 5 months, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 23 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 25 weeks, Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks.
