Rainy start to for Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone 🦌

I bet those people sitting in their deer stands this morning are shivering, fighting off hypothermia thinking they probably won’t get their big buck despite the statistics that show two thirds are harvested today. I’m quite okay being inside this morning, enjoying my eggs and spinach, along with the homemade bread, sweet potatoes and butternut squash that I baked starting a little after 5 AM this morning.

Good morning! Rain and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around midnight tonight. ☃️ Kind of a yucky morning, temperature is going to drift downwards as more sun appears later with a steady breeze to keep things good and cool for the balance of the day. That said it’s mild enough, that the heat is off, though I have plenty of warmth inside after all that cooking this morning. 👩‍🍳

While I don’t really need to get up at 5 AM on my day off ⏰ I wake up that hour, especially as I was asleep before 8 PM last night as it was such a dreary night and I lacked the energy to do my evening walk, 🏃‍♀️ though to be fair, I did get in 10,000 steps 👣 for the day, rode my bike 7 3/4 miles to work via the rail trail 🚲, walked laps at lunch time on the Plaza and then did the stairs up and down to my 18th floor office downtown. I do note that once I move to the suburban North Albany office in a few weeks though it’s going to be more difficult to do the stairs, though I am thinking I’ll probably transfer buses a the Empire Plaza and can walk laps there or days I ride in it’s a bit longer of a ride then downtown, though not the Madison Avenue Hill, though lately I’ve been using Arch Street/Warren Street past the Albany City Jail 👮‍♀️ and then heading up Park Avenue and Museum Road (yes, the wrong way on a one way street) to the Plaza to avoid the worse of the hill. 🤷‍♂️ 🤣

I was thinking blueberry pancakes this morning 🥞 👎 🍳 but ended up deciding I so love the onions, tomatoes, spinach and eggs for a more protein packed day that will keep me going all day. Also cooked up some kidney beans, I am thinking of making homemade spaghetti sauce from canned tomatoes, chop up some onions, cumin and red pepper with peas and spinach thrown over some chickpea pasta 🍝 for dinner tonight. Along with a generous side of butternut squash and maybe some of the sweet potatoes. 🍠 🍆

Lunch is going to be some leftover beef stew I got from my parents house about two or three weeks ago that’s been frozen, tossed over some peas and sweet potatoes. 😋 I need to use up some of the leftovers I keep taking home from my parents house. I often forget about left overs. Mom makes good food, even if it is more calorie dense then I would prefer, but then again maybe I’ve gotten a bit extreme with my own cooking. 👨‍🍳 I just don’t want slip back into the old life of being so heavy and out of shape. The left over stew should be real tasty. 🍲 I can’t complain, mom’s home cooking won’t be around forever, as she’s getting up there in the years, and it’s something you can only enjoy until you no longer can.

Having that extra pot of coffee ☕ this morning, with the cinnamon and ginger. I am not planning on heading out until a while, and only to the library, so if I spend my day pissing it away, I don’t care. I just like an extra cup or three on this cold morning, with that rich tangy taste of cinnamon and ginger. Plus yesterday when I was walking I started to feel a bit achy, 😣 first time in a long time, apparently the turmeric with the spinach, onions and eggs isn’t enough to overcome all those stairs I’ve climbed 🧗‍♀️ over the past week, lol. 🤣 What can I say, I’m getting ducking old 🦆 in a few weeks I’ll be 41. That means two decades have passed since I can legally drink and that first time I went out to the bar with the Young Democrats.  I just remember that night at the Lionheart Cafe downtown, and how much that bar stunk of alcohol 🍻 I think because it was right after they had banned smoking at bars 🚭 and they hadn’t gotten good at cleaning all that spilled beer. Or maybe the Lionheart was more of a dive college bar back in the day.

Today will have showers likely, mainly before 7am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing 🌧 👉 🌞, with a high of 45 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 25th. North wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1980.❄

I am thinking I’ll watch and do some more of the Udemeny Course on Remote Sensing 🛰 and then shower and go down to the library 📚 so I can use the internet on my laptop this morning without working about data use at 10 AM. Then maybe check out the Bethlehem Sportsmart at 1 PM for skis, ⛷ and then in the afternoon ride out to Voorheesville, maybe visiting Indian Ladder Farms for apples. 🍎 Or I could just get apples at Price Chopper on Sunday. Also want to see if I can repair my broken vacuum cleaner. Also thinking about doing some soldering and working on an electronics project this evening. I haven’t done much electronics in a while now. 🤓

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 28.2° from the due south horizon (-42.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:49 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (244°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 49 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the south (185°) at an altitude of 24° from the horizon, 227,672 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 43 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 31 degrees at 3am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light and variable. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 12 occurred back in 1972.

Pretty much typical weather for this evening. 🛌 I’ll probably head to bed pretty early as it gets dark out so early, and I prefer an earlier start. I want to get to Price Chopper tomorrow morning before the crowds 🛒 and get the groceries I need for the week with my coupons. 🎫 And then get up and going on the day. Maybe ride out to Five Rivers 🐦 to enjoy the sunshine and cold before heading out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. 🍲 They are making chilli which should be good.

Going to shop at Price Chopper come Sunday as I have two $5 off $50 coupons, 🎫 giving one to mom and one for my own use. Plus I have a $2 off $10 in meat or fish coupon to use, I’ll probably stock up on frozen salmon for the next time I decide to bake up some salmon. 🐠 I haven’t had salmon in a few weeks, and I think I don’t have any more in my freezer currently but its an excellent source of omega-3 fats. 😋

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Small Business Saturday 🛍️ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 49 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 2004.

I am watching the forecast, 🌨 especially to see how much snow they get up north on Wednesday, but I’m hopeful to head up to the Adirondacks come Friday, to camp and maybe hike or possibly ski along the East Branch more likely. 🏕 I would probably take off Cyber Monday so I can have a three-day weekend, as I’ve been planning for some time now, though I am running a bit low on vacation time for the year, and don’t want to drop below 210 hours for the year if I can avoid it to maximize my roll over into next year, where I may need the extra hours to cover time spent working at the campaign committee along with trips I plan for the summer and autumn. 👩‍💻 That said, I’m hopeful to do remote work at times next year, so maybe I can extend some of my camping trips while working from the Spectulator Library or the hotspot and my laptop in a hammock from camp. But not until spring time, as it’s too cold and not enough solar in autumn.

Gray Day

Dark and Rainy Sunday morning ☔

It’s not pouring out this morning, but hardly a beautiful morning. Dark for sure, but then I get up early and the sun rises late. Up again at 5 AM, but I was asleep before 8 PM and I enjoy getting up early and having a good breakfast, and getting a jump on my day. Too dark to walk this morning so far, but I might go out in a bit.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Rain showers around and 54 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 51 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 3 pm.

No big meals cooking up in the kitchen this morning, 🥞 but I tried unsuccessfully to turn quinoa into pancakes like I do with oatmeal and bananas. I mean it was tasty on the griddle fried up, but even with mashed bananas and apples, I could not get it to bind together. It doesn’t have the gluten that oatmeal or flour has. It was worth a try. I’ve tried cleaning the quinoa better to get rid of more of that bitter taste, and it was better but after refrigerating it and washing again, still not great. It supposed to be a wonderful grain, but my results with it have been mixed. Almost too fussy for my bother, I’d rather stick with old fashioned oatmeal, whole wheat flour or traditional cream of wheat, the later which I fully admit isn’t whole-grain but I usually pair it with chia seeds, greek yogurt, fruit — and cream of wheat is “fortified” with some vitamins, so it’s hardly junk food.

Today will have a chance of showers. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 12th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 3pm. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 2017.

I was thinking about heading up to Keehler Preserve some time this morning 🚵‍♀️ and do some riding after a fun day at Thacher Park riding about 20 miles, mostly trail riding. Getting better and more comfortable mountain biking. It’s not like urban or bike path riding. Totally different set of skills, to get comfortable dealing with rocks and roots and rough trails. I am less fearful of bumps and destroying my bike, though I don’t abuse it too much. I do loose my tail light on my bike, bumping over the rough trail, but it was an old one at this point and I should replace it with a brighter one. I am going to have to do some Internet research on what good lights are 💡 especially now the mornings and evenings are getting shadowy and dark, and it’s important to be seen, especially when commuting. Come the time change in six weeks, I’ll probably still ride in many mornings, but I’ll have to load my bike on the bus and ride home in the evening.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:48 pm with sun having an altitude of 47° from the due south horizon (-23.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:14 pm with the sun in the west (264°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (270°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:51 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:18 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the south-southeast (155°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 227,464 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 7:52 pm. At sunset, look for more rain 🌧 and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

I probably should go to Walmart and buy more groceries and supplies. 🛒 I should go fairly early to avoid the crowds, though honestly I could wait until tomorrow after work. I would like to get more oatmeal and I’m out of frozen fruit. 🍐 🍓 I could go to the car wash and power wash Blackie 🚵 and Big Red. 🛻 Not planning on heading camping next weekend but if it’s nice next weekend I might rattle can some of the rust on my truck before the salt spreaders are back on road. 🚶 I might walk first though.

Tonight will have a chance of more rain, mainly before 4am. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 55 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1963.

Looking ahead, next Sunday is October 🎃 when the sun will be setting at 6:38 pm with dusk at 7:05 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 69 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. I can’t believe how quickly the average temperature drops as we get past the equinox and autumn is well underway. Plus how short days are now. But that’s to be expected.. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1927.

 Into The Distance

A Rainy Hump Day ☔

It looks like it’s going to be a wet one for at least a few more hours and then some clearing. I’m not moving fast, I stayed up too late after doing some cleaning in the kitchen putting away clothes and fine tuning the indexing on my bike after really greasing up the gears, leading to some good smooth shifting again.

Good morning! What day is it? A wet one, of course. Rain and 64 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ☔ Calm wind. The dew point is 64 degrees. The skies will clear around 8 pm.

I’m really not in the groove this morning, moving slowly but surely though the eggs and spinach 🍳 are helping a bit. I didn’t catch the earlier express bus 🚍 downtown, so I can do some extra steps in the Plaza but maybe not as many as I should before work but I’ll get off my butt and certainly do the stairs up to the 18th floor.

Totally ignored the doctors advice ☕ and had the extra cup of coffee this morning. 🧑‍⚕️And hot peppers with the eggs so I’ll probably have to piss extra but whatever I’ll be in the office and I’m not taking my bike to work. 🚳I thought about putting the bike on the bus but I figured between the rain and riding on the front of the bus down the expressway in the rain my grease job would be for naught by the afternoon commute. Traffic will be heavy at rush hour and I won’t be able to get exercise while riding the bus 🚍 home but I can walk 🚶 after getting home. Forgot to get the salmon out of the freezer before work 🐠 so I’ll have to plan something else. Maybe finish off the sweet corn 🌽 and I guess I can defrost some chicken in the microwave if I’m really looking for something warm for dinner. Or maybe just heat up some of soup or rice-lentils I have in the fridge. 🤷‍♂️

Today will have showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. 🌦 High of 73 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 19th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 12pm. 🏖️ Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain. It was humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1948.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:52 pm with sun having an altitude of 51.3° from the due south horizon (-19.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:34 pm with the sun in the west (270°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (276°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:11 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:37 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:13 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 39 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday.

I was thinking 💭 today would be the day to go to Walmart 🛒 and get all the things on my list 📃 that Hannaford didn’t have at a good price, but I might wait until tomorrow as I want to go for an evening walk and then I can get fresh spinach, berries or anything else I might want. I think it will be warm enough tomorrow to wear shorts to work but I want to try on 34×32 pants 👖 for l size before I order a few more pair online. I’m going to one of these days put most of my XXL clothes into the attic, as they really don’t fit well anymore and they really look like when I wear them I’m starving and just got out of a concentration camp. Plus between the too large and good fitting clothes, I really have too many to put in my dresser.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 62 at 6pm. Calm wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963.

Weekend still looks cool and sunny, though some models show more clouds then sun on Saturday. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 53 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 56 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 75 degrees.

Looking ahead but not necessarily forward, there are 2 weeks until More Night then Day 🌌 when the sun will be setting at 6:46 pm with dusk at 7:12 pm. I guess it means more time by the campfire in the evening. 🔥 On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 2017.

Indian Ladder Farms

Closing out summer weekends on this rainy Friday ☔

Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, words that I find almost find hard to write. As that garage in Johnstown has on the sign, summer should get a speeding ticket.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Clouds with a break in the rain and 65 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 63 degrees. 0.52 inches of rain is expected before it ends tomorrow around 4 am.

Another day for busing it 🚍 as I’m not convinced that it won’t turn to heavy rain last night. At least this time I’m prepared with my rain coat 🧥 so that almost guarantees that it won’t rain. Next week at this time I’m hoping to be well on my way to Spectulator so I can set up camp ⛺ before nine o’clock for the long weekend. I’ll see if I can remote work otherwise I’ll take off a personal day.

Today will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 9am. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 14th. Maximum dew point of 70 at 2pm. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.  It could be a swamp for bicycling home, assuming it’s not raining. And I’m not convinced that will be the case. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1947.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.2° from the due south horizon (-12.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:06 pm with the sun in the west (279°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (286°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:44 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 8:11 pm, which is one minute and 38 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the south (180°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 232,021 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:49 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 69 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 13 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over yesterday.

If it’s not raining too much today, 🍞 I am thinking of riding down to Hannaford and getting some whole-wheat flower and yeast so I can start experimenting with making bread again for the first time in years. Looking to make some simple, relatively healthy wholegrain bread as a way to mix up my diet more, especially with winter coming and wanting to have something to dip into the various vegetable soups I want to make come winter. 🍲 And maybe some more frozen fruit, though that could wait to the weekend as I sliced into the pineapple 🍍 last night and still have bananas left.

Tonight will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight, then a slight chance of showers between midnight and 5am. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 70 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1942.

On this day in 1950, President Harry Truman orders the U.S. Army to seize control of the nation’s railroads to avert a strike🏗️ So much for the boy from Missouri being a socialist. 🇨🇳 For those looking for more processed food and unhealthy levels of salt in their diet, in 1958 world’s first publicly marketed instant noodles, 🍝 Chikin Ramen, are introduced by Taiwanese-Japanese businessman Momofuku Ando. And for us Linux users, in 1991 Linus Torvalds announces the first version of what will become Linux. 🐧

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny 🌦, with a high of 79 degrees at 3pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 1st. Maximum dew point of 66 at 9am. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1948.

John Wolcott’s funeral is on Saturday at ten AM, ⚱ so I will be needing to get up at the normal time, go for my walk, have breakfast 🥞 and then shower 🛀 and get on the suit and black tie. 👔 After the funeral, I am thinking I will run to Albany Walmart or maybe just Aldi’s as it’s out in the Colonie, then maybe to Indian Farms and Our Families Harvest to stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables, namely apples and sweet corn. 🍏 🌽 Also I’m quite interested in the Farmer’s Indian Market off Central. Might be some good spices and unusual vegetables at an affordable rate there. Plus bulk bags of rice, lentils and MSG. Got to have that MSG. 👹 Lol! Honest, it doesn’t turn you into a monster but it makes food taste so good.

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny and cool, with a high near 74. ☀ North wind around 6 mph. Maximum dew point of 60 at 11am. Very autumn like. Should be a nice day for the clam bake with my parents. I’m actually tempted to get up early and do a hike or bike ride early in the morning. 🚴‍♀️ Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Friday the Average High Falls To 79 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 7:31 pm with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 73 and 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 during the 1953 heat wave 🌊 . Summer comes to a close.

Rainy end to the work week 🌧️

At least it seems like the rain let up for the morning walk though it’s still drizzling out a bit this morning. It should be good for the morning commute but will likely pick up later which is why I decided against biking it in this morning. Next week though as I have the heavy u-lock now installed on my bike.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Rain showers and 71 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☔ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 63 degrees. The heaviest rain has pulled to the east. Muggy and damp though. But the bad weather shouldn’t last into the weekend. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

As it was dark and raining 🌧️ I put my morning walk off for a while though now I’m off at 6:30 am. It will compact my morning down a bit before work, so I doubt I’ll have time to walk all the way down to the Park and Ride but I can always catch the express bus 🚏 as it heads down Elm Avenue, maybe the Lutheran Church or down by Mike Whyland’s House, whatever that bus stop is called. Going to cook some onions, peppers, mushrooms and a ton of frozen spinach, and scramble some eggs and call that a protein-and-fiber rich breakfast that will get me going, despite not getting to bed until closer to 10 PM then I would like. 💤 Once again my sleep has been suffering since I got the bicycle, as I’ve been getting home late, like last night after shopping then bicycling home. 🔦 Something has to be wrong with that bicycle front light I have — it might be a crappy cheap incandescent bulb but despite the new batteries, it really is terribly dark for riding on those suburban side streets without street lighting after dark.

Today will have a chance of showers before noon, then scattered showers and thunderstorms between noon and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 80 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 68 at 1pm. South wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1930.

Last night I got the last part of my bike build finished, adding the heavy-gauge u-bolt lock to my bicycle. 🔒 It is an Abus Granite 460 u-lock, security Grade 9. I was originally thinking Grade 10 or even higher, but it’s plenty beefy hardened-steel compared to what a lot of people use for locks out in the suburbs. It should be plenty secure if I park the bicycle at the State Capitol, near the security desk, at least during the day time. Ultimately I decided to mount the lock on the back, off the rack, mainly because I couldn’t fit the lock on the frame up front anywhere it wouldn’t be brushing against my legs.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.9° from the due south horizon (-2.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:47 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (293°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (299°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:28 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 19 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 50 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west (264°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 250,843 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and thunderstorms 🌩 and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 53 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday, I explored another Normans Kill Preserve, 🏞 this time the Mohwak Hudson Land Conservancy’s Normanskill West Preserve, which is across from Delaware Plaza at the end of Normanskill Boulevard. It is a really nice preserve, 🐸 with much better views and some nice benches along the creek, along with better access for the creek for fishing, and some minor rapids. The preserve is much smaller then the Normanskill Ravines Preserve I visited yesterday, but much nicer. Gets dark early there in the ravine, though it probably is a good place to keep in mind for hot summer days. Then follow it up with ice cream 🍦 at Jim’s Tastee Freeze, though I didn’t partake this time as I did that on Saturday.

Then I went grocery shopping with my bicycle at Hannaford. 🛒 I was pleasantly surprised how many groceries I could load into the basket on the back. I was a bit worried about the weight, as the $5 Walmart crate I bought isn’t super heavy, but it worked out fine. I think it will hold up for any load that I am likely to put on my bike. The U-lock comes off and connects my bike securely to the bike rack quickly and easily. It’s an extra-large U-lock and is pretty heavy, but it is secure. Then it slides back onto the mount on the rack. At some point, I’ll post a video showing off all the features of Blackie 🚵 as I put it together.

Riding home around 9 PM, it became painfully obvious how bad the front light is on my bike. 🔦It’s okay for distance and lighting for traffic, but it doesn’t put out nearly enough light for safe riding and avoiding potholes and obstacles in the road. It won’t be good for night rides in the National Forest and is bad even in town. I was going to wait, but I think I will research and try to get a better light before vacation. Ideally, I’m thinking it would be a straight cob light that is USB-rechargeable 🔋 that comes with rubber straps to hang on the down tube. This would put a lot of light over and under the front wheel, making for much safer riding, then keep the existing too dim light on the handlebar. I might see if I can clean the contacts or replace the bulb on of the existing fixture. I see they now make LED flashlight bulb replacements, which might allow me to continue to use the existing fixture but with more light output and less battery drain. Maybe that’s a good option, I could swing by the hardware store tomorrow before heading out camping. Also, I think I have dirty contacts or something else wrong with the lamp.

Tonight will have showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 9pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 9pm and 11pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 60 degrees at 4am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 20th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.

If the weather is decent I may go out to Bender Mellon Farms Preserve 🍈 though I think it will likely be thundery. ⛈ That said, I should spend some time cleaning and getting gear loaded up in my truck for a quick start tomorrow morning for heading out to Schoharie. 🚚 My kitchen and bathroom has gotten pretty dirty from all the mud I’ve tracked in and could use a good cleaning. It’s been so humid so I should get out the ammonia and tackle the places where the mold is starting to pop up again.

On this day in 1925, Dayton, Tennessee high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined $100. 🧑‍🏫 Real money back in the day. Now it’s a tank of gas. ⛽ Darn criminals ruining, I mean running our country. The judge incorrectly set the fine, rather then letting the jury do it, so his conviction was overturned on appeal. The law would remain on the books until it was repealed 1967. 🚨 Also in 1983, the world’s lowest temperature in an inhabited location is recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica at −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F). They should build a pipe and send it up north to cool off people efficiently. ☃️

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 80 degrees at 6pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 28th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8am. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 93 degrees. The record high of 102 was set in 1926.

The plan for tomorrow is to hit the Catskill Scenic Trail 🐄 🌄 by early to mid-morning, for several hours of riding, 🚴 before heading to Mine Kill Pool 🏊 to swim for a few hours before it closes at six o’clock then head back to the state forest to camp. 🏕 Days are getting a bit shorter now, though even at six o’clock I should be good to get to camp and set up. Maybe this is the day best to do Shauls and hike Vromans Nose, 👃 though it’s kind of out of my way before the riding the Catskill Scenic Trail and Mine Kill.

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny, with a high near 84. ☀ West wind 3 to 5 mph. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 84 degrees.

I was thinking of spending the whole day at camp on Sunday, 🏕 indulging in a lot of reading and exploring the state forest. 📚 However, I also have a desire to visit Shaul’s this weekend. They are open on Saturday and Sunday from 9 AM to 5 PM, but closed on Monday. 🍑 Perhaps I could go on Saturday, taking a northern route, then drive south to Grand George and experience the beautiful Catskill Scenic Trail. Finally, I can head back north to Mine Kill State Park. 🏊 On the other hand, I don’t want to deal with the inconvenience of maneuvering in that tight campsite, securing everything, and driving on bumpy roads multiple times. It would also result in burning extra fuel. ⛽ I’m not entirely sure what I truly want to do. Sometimes, I simply enjoy arriving at camp and being able to relax 🥱 there for a few days without venturing out daily. I have some tough choices to make! Worse comes to worse, the real vacation starts Friday.

One month 📅 from now will be World Mosquito Day 🐞 when the sun will be setting at 7:50 pm with dusk at 8:18 pm. But with all the rain we’ve had lately, I’m sure I’ll want the DEET this weekend. And the bug net for on the hammock.

April 30, 2023 6 AM Update

The rain let up and I’m up for my morning walk at 6:20. 🌧️

It was raining pretty hard at 5:30 so I delayed getting out of bed for a while but I’m moving forward. 13.9 miles walked on the rainy Saturday though I doubt I’ll make it that far today.

Good morning! Where did April go? I don’t know, I think I was too busy searching 🔎 for Jesus on my own ⛪, playing that dirty old John Prine record, walking 🚶 and eating kale. 🥦 And watching as the wrinkles grew 👴🏻 as I lost the chubbiness.

Clouds, a few sprinkles and 49 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☔ There is a southeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The skies will clear tomorrow around 7 am. Just in time for the work week. 🏢

I’m out walking 🚶 at the park 🏞 trying to get as many steps in as possible early. I don’t know how much it is going to rain so it’s best to get in as many steps in as possible before it gets wetter out.

Today will rain, with thunderstorms also possible after 5pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 60 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Today will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over yesterday.
