Happy Mothers Day! ๐ŸŒท

As ol Merle Haggard would say, there are two kinds of Mothers. I’ve been called a mother before but I’ve not had any kids.

Good morning! Partly sunny and 43 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a north breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Kind of a cold start to the morning ๐Ÿฅถ sleeping in the hammock. I wish I had brought more blankets but I survived. I wanted to go as minimally as possible and it gave me an excuse to get up and going at day break like I normally do.

Went for a nice walk to start the day, ๐Ÿšถ roughly five miles after taking down camp. Hiked some of the Long Path and the trail around the swamp. Had a small fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ last night, nothing major as I was wilderness camping and it was breezy though the flip side was there was an established fire pit there. Next time I go up there I’ll make sure to bring a chair as sitting on the stone I stacked wasn’t all that comfortable. No bugs but by morning it was pretty cold.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Northwest wind 9 to 11 mph. Going to be a cool day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1900.

The plan is to have a nice pan ๐Ÿณ of eggs ๐Ÿฅš when I get home with lots of spinach and feta cheese and then get my clothes ๐Ÿ‘š unpacked from the wash yesterday, go to the car wash ๐Ÿšฟ, get groceries, top of the tank in my truck, โ›ฝ put the tire back on my truck ๐Ÿ›ป and then maybe in the evening ๐ŸŒƒ go for a walk. ๐Ÿšถ Maybe just the town park or Five Rivers though I was thinking about Norman’s Kill Falls or maybe the Rail Trail to the Bender Mellon Preserve. ๐Ÿ‰

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 66ยฐ from the due south horizon (-4.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:30 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ

I saw at the trailhead ๐Ÿ“„ somebody left a note about the passing of Forest Ranger Tom Edmunds. He used to patrol Burnt Rossman State Forest but I only met him once. I think he got transfered to Vermontville in the Northern Adirondacks a few years back. ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ Just another reminder how short life can be and why it’s important to eat healthy and exercise.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (297ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:11 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 8:42 pm, which is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:23 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 37 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 8 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 39 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 21st. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 64 degrees. The record low of 31 occurred back in 1977.

I’m going to keep that campsite โ›บ in mind for Memorial Day Weekend in case I decide to do a quick overnight. Probably stay to close to home that holiday weekend as it depends on how much work I have to do. Hammock Camping is easy especially for a quick overnight. Next weekend is the Lupine Festival ๐Ÿฆ‹ and the first week of June if it’s nice I’ll either do Schoharie or Charles Baker and truck camp, especially if I have my bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ up and running by then. Second week of June I’ll probably be exhausted from work but I want to go with dad to the Gas Up, third weekend is Juneteenth Weekend and want to do four or five days at Piseco-Powley, taking off the Friday before Juneteenth Weekend so I can get the House Pond Campsite and if it’s more than three nights go up to Powley Place on the Sunday / Monday night when I can enjoy it without neighbors.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until the Gas Up โ›ฝ ๐Ÿšœ when the sun will be setting at 8:35 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 78 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.

 Reflection

April 28, 2021 10 AM Update

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. It seems odd, being mid-week after coming to the Adirondacks. โ›ฐ Kind of hard to get back into the routine, especially as I have to put on my suit and head downtown. Four weeks to Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• . That pink moon a few nights ago was pretty for sure. Mostly cloudy and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY . โ˜ Calm wind. The dew point is 48 degrees. The skies will clear Saturday around 5 am.

Didn’t get an early start this morning, ๐Ÿ˜ด so I ended up missing my morning walk. Made cheese Bisquick biscuits, and extra pot of coffee โ˜• and got on with my day. Maybe it was a mistake to not do my morning walk, but it’s tough to get back into the routine after the Adirondacks. Still getting unpacked but any gear that I don’t need at home, I’ll leave in the truck as it will be only a matter of time before I go nrth or west. ๐Ÿ•

Today will have a slight chance of showers between 1pm and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 63 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1990. There was a dusting of snow in 1966.โ„

I have a meeting downtown, ๐Ÿข so I will be putting on my suit later on ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ and heading downtown mid-day and will work in the office until 5 PM. ๐Ÿ‘ž My dress shoes are still in the office since the last time I was there before the pandemic. Not been a lot of formal business meetings, ๐Ÿ’ผ but slowly things are getting back to normal. After which I am going over to John Wolcott’s house โœ‰๏ธ in search of a long lost Fort Orange document. While I still have to wear the muzzle on my face on elevators and the bus, ๐Ÿ˜ท as of Tuesday mid-day I am two weeks out from my second vaccine, so I am good. ๐Ÿ’‰ Probably wearing a mask is good though to keep from getting colds or even a minor case of COVID, although the risk of the later is quite low two weeks after Pfizer, with a 95 percent effectiveness. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ฌ Science is an amazing thing, even though at times it can lead us astray.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 60.8° from the due south horizon (-9.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:17 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (284°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (291°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:56 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 8 seconds with dusk around 8:27 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:06 pm. At sunset, lookout for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 58 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. This evening could be quite wet, I’m bringing the umbrella into work. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm before midnight, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between midnight and 2am, then a chance of showers after 2am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 49 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 11th. Southwest wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1947.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 10 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 51. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 59. Chance of precipitation is 30%. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees. I am still thinking this forecast is overly optimistic for the weekend, and it will be rainier then one might hope. I am going to stick close to town, but if it’s nicer in two weeks I might go to Brookfield or back to ADKs, maybe tacked on with some days of remote work in the woods if I don’t have downtown meetings. ๐Ÿ•

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  when the sun will be setting at 8:04 pm with dusk at 8:36 pm. On that day in 2020, we had sunny and temperatures between 59 and 38 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 66 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1944.

November 21, 2020 11 PM Update

Good evening! Partly clear and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 1 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It turned out to be a nice starry night. After my evening ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I sat out back for a while. Its only about forty degrees out but with a coat it’s not too bad. I kind of wish I had gone up to the Adirondacks for the weekend.

Lots of friends and colleagues are posting pictures of the deer ๐ŸฆŒ they harvested on the first day of rifle season. Basically that one day accounts for 2/3rds of the state’s deer harvest. I’ve always just done small game although this year I didn’t get a license as I was busy with work and then it was so hot that one weekend I was up in the woods. Eventually when I own my own land. I’ll also hire a guide and really learn what I’m doing first and then invest serious time in a tree stand. Folks who have harvest a nice buck on opening day often spend weeks if not months studying and observing the land from their stand, zeroing in their rifles, looking at aerial photos and maps. That said, having your own land to hunt is a big benefit – public lands hunting sucks when your looking off a ridge and can spot two other hunters from your vantage point.

Hiking the Pine Bush was nice but it was so busy. ๐Ÿฆ‹ I probably should have hiked after the press conference after dark but I wanted to do some hiking. Almost every parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ spot at the Discovery Center was packed. So many people on the trails. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป The only place more packed then the Discovery Center Trails was the mall. Yucky. A crowded Crossgates Maul during the pandemic. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿคง๐Ÿ‘พ Saw two bow hunters there. ๐Ÿน I was kind of surprised as I thought most bow hunters would put their bow away for the first day of rifle in other parts of the county but maybe they figured the orange army ๐Ÿ”ซ would drive the deer into the Pine Bush.

Save the Pine Bush got a big victory by that judge โš–๏ธ ruling over the neighbors case over the SEQRA process over the Costco and apartment complex in the Pine Bush. ๐Ÿฆ‹ While I’m sure the ruling will be appealed and Save the Pine Bush must continue on its fight it buys the area time from being developed. ๐ŸŒฒ

Tonight will be partly clear ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 27 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 30th. North wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 2018.

This weekend turned out nicer than I expected and I kind of wish I could have rounded out this calendar ๐Ÿ—“ year of camping with 60 nights but I’ll make it there God willing before 2021. Still five more weekends left in the year. With the pandemic and remote work ๐Ÿ’ป I’ve spent more time camping ๐Ÿ• and nights in the woods then ever before. Some places got overused and there was some abuse of some places but there is still a lot of great wild country out there.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 49% illuminated. At 10 PM, the moon was in the west-southwest (237ยฐ) at an altitude of 9ยฐ from the horizon, some 243,515 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ Quite a nice moon under star lit skies. At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by May 25th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the west-southwest (248ยฐ) at 10:59 pm. The Full ๐ŸŒ• Moon is on Monday, November 30. The darkest hour is at 11:42 pm, followed by dawn at 6:25 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:56 am in the east-southeast (117ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:39 am with sun in the southeast (125ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 28 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 54 seconds over last night.

No sleeping pills ๐Ÿ’Š left for tonight but with the red light in my bedroom ๐Ÿ’ก and sitting out back earlier I hope I’ll sleep okay. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป I’m going to buy more pills the next time I’m at Walmart – get the big jar that will last a long time.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 6th. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became mostly clear by afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. 9.1 inches of snow fell back in 1943.โ„

In four weeks on December 19 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) at 4:24 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 3 minutes and 33 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had cold weather with mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 18 and 6 degrees. I remember going out for a walk on that cold winter day. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 20 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 1895.

Tree Line

November 8, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Four weeks to First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ. Sunny and 45 degrees at the Stoney Pond State Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a west breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Mist is evaporating off the land, going to feel more like summer than late summer later. The sun feels quite warm.

Camp is all taken down โ›บ and I’m sitting down by Stoney Pond. In a little bit I’m going to head to Bouckville and hike some of the canal trail before heading home. The pond is very still but with a lot of people up this way, there isn’t really the solitude I would hope for. I don’t like hearing a bunch of voices in the woods. Usually it’s quiet ๐Ÿคซ up here in November but the weather is exceptionally nice.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 2pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 27th. West wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 75 was set in 1975. 1.7 inches of snow fell back in 1894.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:47 am with sun having an altitude of 30.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-40.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:06 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (241ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (248ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:48 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 5:16 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:51 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 67 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

After I head home, I’ll get unpacked and head out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ At one level I wish I could extend the weekend but I have a busy Monday on tap at work and I might end up having to go downtown. ๐Ÿข With winter coming, I expect things to return more back to normal but I’m also aware that spring will always return again ๐ŸŒผ that is after a long harsh winter. โ„

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 47 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 27th. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of 11 occurred back in 1971.

I will miss Madison County ๐Ÿฎ and the farm country but while things may continue to change its going to be here much like it was a decade ago when I was here. I might not like everything I see in our country and our state but it’s good to get away. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ I might not agree with everything happening in this world ๐ŸŒŽ but I’m mostly focused on improving my own life and not changing things beyond my control.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:28 pm with dusk at 5:00 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow showers, cloudy skies and temperatures between 34 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 39 degrees. We hit a record high of 68 back in 2001.

Snowing

October 18, 2020 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 42 degrees. The skies will clear Wednesday around 1 pm.

I am back home ๐Ÿก as it’s going to rain tomorrow in Central NY and quite honestly I don’t want to drive home at 5 or 6 pm tomorrow in the dark especially in rain. Plus working all day under a tarp or in the truck doesn’t seem like much fun.

To be sure, it was a beautiful weekend ๐Ÿ‚ even if clouds pushed in early on Sunday. No rain โ˜” but it was cold on Cherry Ridge ๐Ÿ’ Camping Area ๐Ÿ• and I didn’t have the whole area so I couldn’t listen to Jason Aldean as loud as I wanted ๐ŸŽถ while getting drunk ๐Ÿป next to roaring fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ. But the fire was big enough for a while that I was plenty to warm next to it.

I am cleaning out the cooler now โ‡๏ธ and I’ll get things ready to put back in the crawl space by morning. Then things will be packed up. With the late sunrise ๐ŸŒ… and my busy schedule I’m not planning any further trips โ›บ until November. This year I doubt I’ll have enough time to take a full week off of work though in November as I often do.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 41 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 12th. Southeast wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 36 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon with 7% illuminated. The Blue ๐ŸŒ Moon is on Halloween ๐Ÿฆ‡ Saturday, October 31. After trick or treating and spread COVID-19 don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour ๐Ÿ•’ so you can sleep in one hour ๐ŸŽƒ. The darkest hour is at 12:41 am, followed by dawn at 6:45 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:13 am in the east-southeast (103ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:52 am with sun in the east-southeast (109ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 6 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 16th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 4pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1963. There was a dusting of snow in 1992.โ„

It looks like the weather will be better back home ๐Ÿก and I can work down at the library most of the day. Another busy day ahead, I’m glad I won’t be trying to drive back ๐Ÿš˜ in the dark.

In four weeks on November 15 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (245ยฐ) at 4:32 pm (Standard Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 35 minutes and 25 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 50 and 32 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 48 and 32 degrees. The record high of 74 degrees was set back in 1993.

Looking ahead, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 2 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 2 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 7 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 7 weeks, Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช is in 2 months, Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ is in 11 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 3 months, Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 3 months, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 17 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 4 months.

 Schoharie Creek

October 8, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Dark Thursday. ๐Ÿ˜Š No power still this morning. ๐Ÿ”Œ Next Thursday is Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚. Mostly sunny and 43 degrees in the land of the Delmartian. There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 25 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ.

I still can’t believe there is no power in Delmar. ๐Ÿ”Œ There are a few branches down but not a lot. The traffic lights ๐Ÿšฅ are working mainly because they’re on portable generators. Nice morning though. ๐ŸŒ…

I ended up eating breakfast out back. โ˜• Fresh coffee on a cold but sunny morning is always a good thing. ๐Ÿณ Camp stove works fine without electricity.

Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. I thought they had power back on in Delaware but it’s just a generator. โšก

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 17th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 2017.

I guess if you are going to loose power this is the weather to be in the dark. ๐ŸŒƒ Nights are long but you don’t need heat โ™จ but it’s cool enough that my refrigerator packed full of ice should be good for a few days.

It looks like I won’t be getting

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 64% illuminated. At 6 AM, the moon was in the south-southwest (196ยฐ) at an altitude of 71ยฐ from the horizon, some 244,789 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by April 12th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the borthwest (304ยฐ) at 1:32 pm. The moon will rise at 10:32 pm. The Hunter ๐Ÿน Moon is on Saturday, October 24. The darkest hour is at 12:43 am, followed by dawn at 6:33 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:02 am in the east (98ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. Tonight will have 12 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over last night.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 37 degrees at 6am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 23rd. West wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 2001.

In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 56 and 36 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 52 and 34 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1994.

Looking ahead, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 7 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 11 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 12 weeks, Bubble Bath Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 3 months, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 14 weeks, Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 16 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 18 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 19 weeks.

Spruce Street

August 14, 2020 8 PM Update

Good evening! Mostly clear and 76 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒŒThere is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees.

It was a nice day hiking the Catherine Valley Rail Trail ๐Ÿš‚. Not the most exciting trail ever but a nice walk through some well managed and scenic woods. A lot of it was timber country that is leased to a local hunting club. ๐ŸฆŒ๐Ÿฆƒ๐Ÿฆ† Some road noise from NY 14 but it ran pretty high above the valley on dirt viaducts cut into the mountainside.

In the afternoon I went for a swim at Watkins Glen State Park. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I thought the pool was too crowded for social distancing at four o’clock so I hopped out and by five it had thinned out so then I hopped in the pool. One thing nice about the Finger Lakes is the swimming areas are all open until 7 pm. โ˜บ

I thought about swimming at Enfield Gorge or at the Cayuga Lake beach ๐Ÿ– at Taughannock State Park but I feel like those bathrooms ๐Ÿšฟ are more cramped and less clean, and the natural water is not chlorinated so I’m hesitant. Plus the beach areas are smaller and cramped making social distancing more difficult.

I got ice cream one more time at Glen Dairy Bar ๐Ÿงthis time an apple sundae. ๐ŸI think this will be the last one for this trip, I’m kind of tired ๐Ÿ˜ด of eating so much ice cream. It’s been fun while it lasted during this trip. I told myself ice cream ๐Ÿฆnearly there would be my special little treat.

Watched the sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ from off Ball Diamond Road in the National Forest pasture again tonight. Another nice sunset, always pretty watching the sun set over the hills of the Finger Lakes and Seneca Lake.

Walked down to Foster Pond and watched the stars โœจ for a while. Saw four shooting stars ๐ŸŒ including one that was really bright and lit up the sky. Ended up falling asleep and was awoken by a bunch of drunk kids rafting in plastic blow up rafts on Foster Pond. ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ One of them offered me a partially drink can of white claw, during the pandemic. ๐Ÿป I declined and walked back to camp.

Running low on drinking water ๐Ÿ’ฆ and wanting something sweet I packed apple ๐Ÿ juice for hiking today. That was fine until I cross threaded the canteen and it leaked over my backpack. Fortunately I decided to leave the binoculars and camera ๐Ÿ“ธ in the truck. A bee was attracted to the backpack got stung in the arm. ๐Ÿ That hurt. The backpack was washed in the shower ๐Ÿšฟ and is drying now. Drank too much apple juice today and now I have the runs a bit. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Hello bucket shitter! Getting full, going to emptied and buried โšฐ tomorrow when I break camp.
