The Tornados – Telstar

Telstar 1, the first satellite to broadcast network television across the Atlantic Ocean in 1962, used only 14-watts of power generated by solar cells. Not only did it broadcast television, send faxes and telephone communications, it also allowed the United States and Europe to synchronize clocks accurately for the first time, within 1 millisecond. Previously, there was a 2 second mis-synchronization between European and American time based on 1950s cross-Atlantic wire technology.

It was destroyed in 1963, by the radiation from nuclear bombs being tested in atmosphere by the US and USSR -- and it's destruction was one of the reasons for the 1964 Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, besides the fact that milk being sold in the US was showing up with alarming amounts of Cesium-137 from fallout.

Diesels Rolling Coal on PEOPLE 2014 Compilation

After seeing this article, disapproving of folks rolling coal, I figured I had to post this video.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. It's only a small number of folks who have modified their diesel trucks this way with smoke switches or aggressive tunes, and typically rolling coal is only a very small portion of the time the vehicle is operating (e.g. when the smoke switch is activated). The effect may be dramatic, and cover things with soot, but environmental impact in grand scheme of things is zero.

Should have bought a diesel truck. Except diesels are expensive, more difficult to maintain, and but an more expensive fuel that is harder to get especially in rural areas.

Good Morning! Happy Friday.

Good Morning! Happy Friday. At the end of the day, we can say the weekend has come back around. Looks like a nice weekend, and I might be able to get out of town if a choose, as I should be picking up a loaner car this afternoon. If I go camping, I will have to see if my white gas lantern works, as itโ€™s been a long time since Iโ€™ve actually turned it on. In recent years, Iโ€™ve done things mostly electrically.

I am still hopeful about Independence Day Weekend and having my truck back. Itโ€™s a possibility, although who knows. I might still go tent camping if I donโ€™t have the truck.

Further out, I got to figure out where I am going, assuming I take a week off in mid to late July. I want to try to get at least week off to go somewhere. I kind of got busy, and never got around to plan things out for going down to West Virginia and Virginia. I also donโ€™t know if I want to go down there in the hottest part of the summer โ€“ it could be downright hot. Maybe I should go there in the fall, during my November trip. But I also donโ€™t want to spend too much time down there in the fall, as that will cut into time I have back in New York to go hunting.

I could envision this summer taking a trip through the Adirondacks in mid to late July. Maybe start out at Moose River Plains, then Independence River, then out to Lowville, then maybe the Western Adirondacks lake Greenwood State Forest and Streeter Lake. Maybe then end up in Deer River area and Walter Pratt/Brasher Falls State Forest in Massena. Then come back through Plattsburgh.

Sometime in July or August I want to get back down to the Western Catskills again, maybe camping on Mary Smith Hill. Try my hand at fishing the Beaverkill and poking around Roscoe and visit Cables Lake. Then maybe head down into Poconos of Pennsylvania for a day.
