August 2, 2017 9 AM Update
Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Three weeks to Last Day with Average High of 80. Partly sunny and 71 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 66 degrees. The muggy weather ends Saturday around 9 pm.
We are definitely in the dog days of summer. It’s just so hot and humid, and things don’t look like they’ll change until Saturday afternoon. You can’t control the weather but you can control your attitude. Remember in less than six months from now it will be frigid. This would have been a good week to be on vacation.
Today will have isolated showers, then scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. Partly sunny, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 12pm. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 77 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1975.
The sun will set at 8:13 pm with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 75 degrees. The dew point will be 65 degrees. There will be a south-southwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 11pm, then isolated showers between 11pm and 4am. Patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low of 62 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. Southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1976.
So last night I broke the paddle on my kayak trying to push out into the Mohawk River. At least I didn’t get stuck in the river and paddles aren’t that expensive. I knew that the plastic was starting to get fatigued and it’s good it failed when I wasn’t out on the water. I shouldn’t have pushed so hard on it but I thought I could free myself and I wasn’t crazy about walking through PCB laden sediment near Troy. River levels were quite low. Oh well. I’m debating if I should go back to Adirondack Kayak Warehouse to get a matching paddle, so I can have the non broken end in storage or if I should look to upgrade to something higher quality. I could glue the paddle but I don’t want it to break and get in a difficult situation in the middle of a river.
With the heat and after eating all the good food at the office picnic, I kind of collapsed in bed and sort of watched the news, listened to podcasts and played on my phone. Still this morning I feel a bit out of it. I think it’s the heat. I’m hoping a day in the air conditioned office will help. I am thinking of washing my truck and maybe going fishing down by the river this evening.
Saturdays forecast looks pretty awful but Sunday looks good. I will probably stay in town this weekend. Things could change based on the weather. I wouldn’t mind going out to Mine Kill but only if Saturday looks decent.
As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Last Day with Average High of 80 when the sun will be setting at 7:43 pm with dusk at 8:13 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 80 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1947.
