July 21, 2017 8 AM Update
Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Six weeks to September 1st. Let’s not think that. Vacation is first on my list, it starts after work today.Β Β Mostly cloudy and 72 degrees in Delmar. There is a northwest breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 63 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am.
I made it down to the express bus today. It was a bit of a hurry after the shower. Definitely a fairly humid day and once the sun comes out it will be hot. Bit of sweaty this morning, and the air conditioning wasn’t really cranked on the express bus, but I am sure it will be cool if not cold in the office. Then it’s the long slog through eight hours then the bus ride home, and then I’m off.
My bags are packed and I’m ready for vacation. I decided not to drive to work today instead taking the express bus. I figured with the hot weather, temperatures reaching close to 90 degrees it would be better to pack everything besides the propane and the coolers. I didn’t want all of the ice to get soft or propane to over pressure and leak, parked in the heat all day today. They are talking about temperatures reaching close to 90 degrees or maybe above it in the city. Taking the bus home then leaving right after loading the coolers and propane.
I hope to be on the road by 6 PM and to Brookfield by eight.Β I have gas and the supplies I need for at least the first few nights, so it should be a quick shot over there.Β Just a quick overnight, and I might even skip building a fire if it gets dark before I can find wood. I have like 3-4 pieces of that kiln Β I want to get a very early start from Brookfield so I can either head out to Montezuma then south to the National Forest or maybe through Cortland and over. I do like driving US 20 and Montezuma is nice but I’m in a bit of a rush to get set up in the Finger Lakes. I will camp there through at least Thursday and maybe the whole week if the weather doesn’t look good enough to be worthwhile to head down to Pennsylvania.
Today will be mostly sunny, with a high of 88 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. West wind 5 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 101 was set in 1930.
The sun will set at 8:26 pm with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 51 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly clear conditions and 80 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 47 seconds over yesterday.
Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2016, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1970.
On this day in 1925, Dayton, Tennessee high school biology teacher John T. Scopes is found guilty of teaching evolution in class and fined $100. Darn criminals ruining our country. The judge incorrectly set the fine, rather then letting the jury do it, so his conviction was overturned on appeal. The law would remain on the books until it was repealed 1967. Also in 1983, the world’s lowest temperature in an inhabited location is recorded at Vostok Station, Antarctica at β89.2 Β°C (β128.6 Β°F). They should build a pipe and send it up north to cool off people efficiently.
Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until September 1st when the sun will be setting at 7:28 pm with dusk at 7:57 pm. On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 79 and 62 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1953.
