February 28, 2021 Morning
Good morning! February is almost done. Tomorrow is March, the snow is melting away, although some sticks around. Not that I expect March to be snow free, often some of our snowiest weather is March. But it doesn’t last with average temperatures in the mid-to-upper 40s, especially as April is right around the corner. Four weeks to Worm Moon π . Maybe then I will see some more robins. With the snow, there hasn’t been nearly the number of robins and birds around this year. Mostly cloudy and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. β Calm wind. There are 5 inches of snow on the ground. β οΈThe skies will clear tomorrow around 1 pm.
One model hinted we might see some sun this morning, but that was not to be. I should get out for a walk before the rain as I was terrible and didn’t get out for a walk, spending most of my day with a book, some Youtube watching on the phone, and then working on some additional code for neat new maps on the blog. Yesterday the weather didn’t excite me, and I have to admit I am just so much more lazy on the weekend, but fresh air would help. My back and shoulder are feeling better.
Today will be scattered showers, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy π¦, with a high of 42 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 10th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1903. 9.7 inches of snow fell back in 1948.β
Solar noon π is at 12:09 pm with sun having an altitude of 39.6Β° from the due south horizon (-31.3Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour π starts at 5:06 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (254Β°). πΈ The sunset is in the west (260Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:44 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 6:12 pm, which is one minute and 14 seconds later than yesterday. π The best time to look at the stars is after 6:45 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers π§ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday. Picking up daylight quickly, indeed in around two weeks there will be more day then night, even sooner if you include dawn and dusk.
I doubt I’ll do much hiking in the woods with the weather today, but I will out to my parents house later today for Sunday dinner. Not sure what they are cooking, I haven’t talked to them since last week. Looking at some rain this evening, although it will be above freezing all night everywheres locally, so it will just be rain. Not a lot of rain though.
Tonight will be scattered showers, mainly after 2am. Cloudy π§, with a low of 37 degrees at 8pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 13th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1948.
Continuing to look for solutions for not being able to query ArcMap REST Services in QGIS. I still don’t understand why nobody though to include a text box to append a where clause to the query. It’s just a very odd oversight. I don’t think they even needed to include the full query box — it’s easy enough for people to write their own queries.
I am glad to see the Johnson and Johnson vaccine has been approved for the Corona. One shot will make life a lot easier for many people, and while I have evidence that this will be the case, I am hoping they will offer it at my office or nearby, and it’s something I can just get during my lunch break or by walking down to the Concourse. I know at one level, I prefer remote work to last as long as possible, but at the same time, I am looking forward to the express bus returing and working downtown. I just kind of miss the regular schedule, somehow bringing work into my bedroom isn’t that much fun. Plus I miss the views from my old office.
πΉπ»πΌOnly 20 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!πΉπ»πΌ Less then three weeks until spring and two weeks until we set the clock ahead one hour, giving us a 7 PM sunset. No complaints there, and it will be rapidly warming up. While I am not necessarily planning any big trips before April, who knows, it depends on the weather. The later sunset after the time change helps.
As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7 PM Sunset π when the sun will be setting at 7:00 pm with dusk at 7:28 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy and temperatures between 46 and 38 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1946.
