February 25, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. One day closer to the weekend. Three weeks to St. Patrick’s Day 🍀. Mostly cloudy and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ The skies kind of remind me of a November day. But then again this time of year is not that dissimilar to November, especially on a relatively mild day like today. Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 5 pm.

Yesterday I discovered this great archive of historical aerial photos dating back to 1952, 1960 and 1973.🌐 While the 1960 ones are large scale and the 1973 ones are on a fairly low quality medium at least when their scanned in the 1952 ones are fantastic. They are no georeferenced but at least with the cities 🌆 that easy enough to do. I’ll be posting a bunch to the blog in the coming days. I’m also using them for analysis with Save the Pine Bush. Also been working on doing some shadow analysis, writing a program to do that. With computers it’s possible to quickly do shadow analysis of a whole year in a few seconds.

Today will have a chance of light rain, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a high of 50 degrees at 3pm. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. I’ll buy it. North wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2017. 16.8 inches of snow fell back in 1966.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 38.2Β° from the due south horizon (-32.7Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 5:01 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (252Β°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (258Β°) starting at 5:37 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 57 seconds with dusk around 6:07 pm, which is one minute and 15 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-southwest (249Β°) at an altitude of 17Β° from the horizon, 252,271 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:41 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 11 hours and one minute of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 49 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely before 3am, then a chance of rain and snow. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 34 degrees at 5am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 6th. North wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2019, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1950.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. πŸ˜• Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 30. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Cool but not too sunny at least on Saturday. I heard after the thaw that they are going to get quite a bit more snow up north.

🌹🌻🌼Only 23 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 when the sun will be setting at 7:04 pm with dusk at 7:32 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2019, we had mostly cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 36 and 26 degrees. Kind of a cold day last year. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.
