August 26, 2018 Night
Good evening! The weekend has come to an end, like they always do. Next weekend is Labor Day Weekend, and hopefully it will be nice. It cleared out after the rain shower that got my hammock and truck cap insides wet with the cap windows open and 69 degrees in Westerlo. β There is a west-southwest breeze at 6 mph. π. The dew point is 66 degrees. The muggy weather ends Thursday around 10 pm. π
This past weekend I spent up at Piseco-Powley Road, on Saturday driving down to Little Falls to explore Moss Island and the great glacial Potholes again, then went for a hike along the Erie Canalway Trail through the deep rock cut and into the Rollaway neighborhood of Little Falls. Hiked back a ways in the other direction, then got repeatedly stung by bees when I sat down on an overgrown bench along the trail, then when I got back to my truck, drove up to Dolgeville, got ice cream, and then went back to camp, had a few beers and some dinner, fell asleep listening to a podcast in my hammock. This morning I went for a paddle on the East Canada Creek, did some fishing, and some writing before taking down camp.
Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Patchy fog after midnight. Otherwise, partly cloudy , with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10pm. West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had partly cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1969.
This whole week is expected to be quite warm, with temperatures in the upper 80s and maybe low 90s by mid-week. That’s quite warm for late August but not unheard of in the history books. π I guess it’s good for the people that have this week off, as it seemed like there were a lot of people up at Piseco-Powley Road.
Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny π , with a high of 84 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 11am. West wind 3 to 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1948.
Today in 1920, the 19th amendment to United States Constitution takes effect, giving women the right to vote in federal elections.π³ Seems quite unbelievable that it was so long for women to have a federal right to vote, but then again African Americans down south by in large couldn’t vote easily until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1968. That said, voting is an important right to have, although it’s no substitute for making your own way and finding solutions to your own problems without the government’s help.
Looking ahead, there are 10 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends π₯οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2017, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 50 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994.
It’s a bit hard to know for sure what Labor Day Weekend will look like, but some models show it being reasonably nice.π· Next Saturday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 62 at 12pm. Next Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees.
I am still hoping to get up to Moose River Plains for Labor Day Weekend, π² but that depends on my work schedule and how the weather is. I am really dying to paddle the Cedar River Flow for sure.
In four weeks on September 23 the sun will be setting at 6:50 pm,π which is 48 minutes and 47 seconds earlier then tonight.
