December 29, 2015 morning

Good morning. On this final Tuesday of 2015 it’s sleeting and around 29 degrees. The bus seems to be running on time but the untreated surfaces are somewhat slippery but not as slippery as if we had gotten freezing rain. The freezing rain will come later and transition over to rain, leaving us little slop left over.

I am still feeling a little bit sick but they are short staffed and at this point I’m mostly recovered and I need to get caught up on things at work.

A much as I hate living in the city, it sure is nice on icy days like today. I don’t have to worry about my commute and on nice weekends I can spend them out in the wilderness.

Still looking at heading up to the Adirondacks camping for New Years Eve.
This won’t require a lot of preparations. With the snow, it will likely involve tent camping, with gear dragged back into the woods. Another possibility is camping locally. I’m thinking about that too.

I am almost to work. Have a safe commute and enjoy your Tuesday.

December 28, 2015 evening

Good evening. 24 degrees and the snow has started. Snow before 5am, then snow and sleet. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Total nighttime snow and sleet accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. Then in the morning… Snow and sleet before 10am, then rain between 10am and 1pm, then drizzle likely after 1pm. High near 38. Southeast wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible. Most of the snow and ice will probably melt to a slushy mess by evening. The Adirondacks will get more snow.

Tomorrow morning may be a messy commute or it might be just rain. A lot depends on timing. My guess is it won’t be a big deal, but I could be wrong. The weekend looks good, although maybe a bit cloudy with typical temperatures for early January.

I’m still not feeling really good and everything I did today was a minor cluster but I survived my Monday and will be back at work tomorrow if all goes well. Coughing more in my apartment but it may be just because I’m lying in bed and not the mold I’ve mostly cleaned up. Going to get a good night’s sleep and see how I feel in the morning. They are really short staffed at work, so I will try to get in if possible tomorrow.

Lots of close calls today but nothing really bad happen.
Just lots of stuff to make me cranky. But I survived. Tomorrow is Tuesday and New Years will be upon us shortly. I am looking forward to welcoming New Years in the wilderness if all goes well.

Complete Haze

Why I’m so cranky tonight …

1) I am in a complete haze from my cold. I’m not coughing much now, but I almost feel drunk, even though I haven’t had any alcohol or cold medicine since last night. Probably a sinus infection, in part brought on by the mold box I live in the city.

2) Decided to leave the second battery connected for a short trip to the store with my headlights on, and almost got stranded at the store. Barely got it started. It was low. The second time I left the second battery off, and it started up fine. But I was a little panicked that I might not make it home tonight.

3) Almost got into a head-end crash with a car at a traffic light turning left that was slowing to turn left and had it’s signal on but decided at the last minute to go straight at the Four Corners. It was so close — there was smoke from tires from three different cars panic braking in the intersection.

4) Blew past a trooper in a school zone, but he got the guy a few cars in front of me. Apparently, despite being no school, they’re enforcing it today. I didn’t have Waze open, so I didn’t have my actual speed up on the screen. My speedometer is off from lift kit, and I probably wasn’t looking at it either, so I have no idea on my actual speed. I usually don’t drive this way, but I was heading over to the lbirary.

5) StraightTalk has $100 off through tonight (last night, got a mailing on it on Christmas Eve, ran through 12/28) on their year plan. I tried to order it. They put two temporary authorizations for $488 each on my card, but neither time did the transaction process. They said that my card won’t ultimately be charged. But I also won’t be able to get the discount either.

December 27, 2015 evening

Good evening as the long weekend comes to it’s logical conclusion. Currently 38 degrees and partly cloudy. The nearly full moon is quite pretty tonight. Looking for a low around 29 degrees, the first freezing temperature in a while. It will remain below freezing through Tuesday.

Right now the storm forecast for Monday Evening into Tuesday is calling for more ice and rain then snow. Monday will be sunny and a seasonable 30 degrees for a high. That’s normal for late December, despite recent warm weather. Tuesday night the storm comes in. It would start out as snow, turn to ice for a miserable Tuesday morning commute then be rain by afternoon. This is certainly still subject to change and it may be an all rain event or less likely, an all snow event.

Last night was nice in the woods, not too cold and the rain held off until 10 PM which allowed me to take down most of my camping gear and lights before heading to bed, so nothing that would need drying out got wet. I wanted to get a quick start in the morning, in case it was pouring rain when I awoke.

It was a nice campfire although the wood I gathered in the woods was damp and at times the fire was pokey. But it was a nice evening, listening to a Prairie Home Companion and then some podcasts until a quarter before 10. Took down as much of camp as possible and retired to the back of the truck. The rain startedΒ  just as I killed the latern for the night.

It was nice in the truck. Not a cold evening, so I didn’t really miss not having the heated tent. Camping in the truck is nice on rainy nights because your up high and it was plenty dry. It never poured last night, just a steady refreshing sound of rain on the truck cap. By morning the rain had stopped. I had already drained the fuel out of my camp stove, so I skipped making coffee and picked up some at McDonald’s in Richfield Springs. Tearing down camp was easy, as everything was already down, so all I had to do was load the food box and cooler from the front of truck to the back and fold up my folding table and load things like the camp grill and buckets.

I had trouble bleeding out the propane lines with just the lantern attached – it burns too little propane to easily clean out the lines and kept burning for 3 minutes after I switched the tank off and an additional 30 seconds after I unplugged the line from the tank! With the heater connected, the lines bleed out in like 10 seconds.

The drive home was rainy and foggy at times. The Cherry Valley Bypass was particularly bad for fog. I need to replace my windshield wiper on the driver side or at least clean the blade good. It was tough seeing out the windshield at times, especially with the heavy rain. But I made it home safely.

Unpacked my camping gear and made breakfast. Spent some time researching propane camping stoves. Relaxed a bit because I’m still recovering from my cold. Went to my parent’s house for Sunday Dinner. Did my wash, put my clothes away. Went grocery shopping. Lots of rainy day tasks.

I’m tired and heading to bed now. Good night.

Boxing Day Night

Good evening. Currently 41 degrees and cloudy. Rain expected around midnight here, around 1/2 inch expected by morning. We have to watch out starting Monday night for a snow storm or ice storm that could leave 5-8 inches by Tuesday. Or possibly ice. Definitely something to watch if you plan on driving anywhere on Tuesday.

It was a nice day, avoiding most of the rain except for a few rain drops here and there. Mostly cloudy but for a while we had some blue skies. Certainly much better than expected earlier on. The weather was temperate and about 45 degrees for a high. It was a bit chilly sitting with the heater off. I decided to spend a second day out in Madison County when I heard that the rain wouldn’t be coming until late. I took down the tent, so I wouldn’t have to take it down in the rain tomorrow. It’s not that cold, so I’ll just camp in the truck cap. Most of the gear is ready to be packed tomorrow, so I’ll get a quote start in the rain tomorrow. I thought about stringing up a tarp in case the rain came early but decided against that, on grounds that if I did that the tarp would get wet,  and I’d have to dry it out when I go home.

Today I went down to Rogers Environmental Education Center and hiked around it for a couple of hours and explored the visitor center. I always love exploring down there, it always is brimming with wildlife and the views from the farm tower are always great. I know I went down there three weeks ago, but that was a brief visit and I didn’t get much time to enjoy the wildlife.

The insta-start propane lantern is great. I love being able to start it as easy as turning on a light. My liquid fuel lantern is hard to start after dark, as you have to pump it up then light a match. With the insta-start, you just turn the knob and press the button next to it with your thumb. Usually only one click except when it’s windy, then a few clicks. It’s hooked into the big propane tank via 13 feet of hose, and being relatively light, I have it strung from a rope, like 7 foot in air, so it casts light all over the campsite. It is rated 810 lumens or equal to a 60 watt bulb, although I think the higher pressure tank I have hooked to makes it somewhat brighter. Probably not as bright as some of the electric lights I have but it doesn’t drain my battery and it’s a 360 degree light. At least hooked via the “y” with the heater hooked to the other end, the excess propane burns out of the line in ten seconds when the tank is turned off and the heater and lantern are on. I was concerned with burning off the excess propane in the line, but it’s not a big deal.

It’s hard to say with this winter, but my feeling is that roadside camping will be done after tonight. But I still plan to camp in lean-tos and in the tent throughout the winter, as long as the weather is relatively mild. We will see what the weather is like going forward. April will be here in four months and the snow will melt.

Have a great evening. 2016 will be upon us before you know it.
