Last Friday of September Update

Good Morning! A Delightful Fall Friday. Thatโ€™s the best way to describe todayโ€™s weather. Itโ€™s about 49 degrees out, and now that the fog has burnt off, itโ€™s going to get up to upper 70s by afternoon. The weekend is looks pretty nice.

Still looking to get out Schoharie or maybe the Adirondacks on Saturday evening. I have stuff to do tonight and tomorrow morning but hopefully I still will be able to get out of town. Itโ€™s difficult to head up to the Adirondacks after work at this point, because itโ€™s dark by 6:40 PM, and it means driving a lot of miles in darkness, with horny bucks racing across the road.

The colors would be better in the Adirondacks, but if I am down in the Hudson Valley on Saturday, Schoharie or maybe the Catskills makes more sense. I think it would be fun to get down to Northwestern Catskills, where the leaves are likely to be most colorful. I have fallen in love with the general Roxbury-area around John Burroughโ€™s cabin. The cabin maybe closed this weekend, but his grave site is still pretty nice with views of Catskills. Then maybe take a scenic drive over to Mount Utsayathana. Also could pick up veggies to freeze at Shaul’s.

The following weekend, assuming the weather is nice, I would probably take a Central NY trip. I havenโ€™t totally worked out the destinations, but probably Charles Baker State Forest or Stony Pond State Forest. Might do some fishing in Nelson Swamp, and somewhere along the way see if I can drop some tree rats while enjoying the fall foliage. Hopefully the leaves wonโ€™t be gone by then โ€“ they seem to drop early in that part of state.

Next week is October, and it will be turkey season around here. Not sure how much of the fall turkey season I will be participating in, as I will be busy with work and need to get some more gear for turkey season, but so be it. I probably will do more hunting during the spring turkey season, which is always those nice weeks in late April in the Adirondacks. I have some ideas of where to hunt in the Adirondacks already for spring turkey.

Last Thursday of the Month

Good Morning! Happy Thursday. Today is kind of a cloudy, dark, and gray morning. Supposed to get nicer as the day progresses, and north of the Mohawk River, itโ€™s expected to actually pretty nice. Friday is supposed to be warmer, and Indian Summer will return for the weekend.

Thought I was going to have to take the local bus downtown or drive down to the Park and Lot, as I kind of missed the 8:35 PM alarm on my cellphone to depart by a couple of minutes. But I walked down their quickly, and made it in plenty of time for the bus that departs at 8:56 PM. Itโ€™s normally a 15-16 minute walk to the Park and Ride, and I always build in a few extra minutes into my schedule, in case traffic works against me, or for some reason my walk takes longer then normal.

One day closer to the weekend. Still not sure what my weekend plans are, a lot will depend on what I have to do for work this weekend. I am still hoping to get away for one day. Maybe to Schoharie so I can pick some things up at Shauls, or maybe to the Southern Adirondacks โ€“ White House might be nice. Dropping squirrels might be fun, especially if I get that shotgun I am thinking of getting this weekend.

Fourth Hump Day of the Month

Good Morning! Happy Tuesday. Another bright and sunny, delightful fall day. The skies couldnโ€™t be bluer, and the trees are starting to turn in Delmar. It was a wonderful walk down to the CDTA Park and Ride at Elm Avenue, which I walk down to almost every day now, as itโ€™s so much nicer of an experience then taking the local bus down.

I got Big Red back, and the seat is fixed and is working pretty good. It is much more comfortable and the repairs were paid for under warranty, and all is good. The seat doesnโ€™t feel like itโ€™s brand new any more, but itโ€™s had almost three years of wear and tear, and Iโ€™m a big guy. The seat never was super comfortable, but at least now it reclines and doesnโ€™t cause back pain after long drives. And it was free to get fixed. Too bad the warranty ends October 14th, when my truck turns three years old.

Now I Have Money for that Shotgun. Now that I didnโ€™t have to pay anything to get the truckโ€™s seat fixed, I can afford to buy a shotgun for hunting. I have my turkey permit, and a shotgun is also good for squirrel hunting in the early season with it’s wider pattern, as long as you donโ€™t mind picking out the shot from the meat. For under $500, I can get a pretty decent general-purpose hunting firearm.

โ€‹Looks Like a Nice Weekend On Tap. I donโ€™t have any plans really on tap, but I am leaning going out to Schoharie County for Saturday evening, and stocking up at Shauls on Sunday afternoon. It would be nice to do some falling camping, enjoying the fall air, and seeing if I can drop some tree rats. Iโ€™d love to get a bunch of peppers and freeze them for the winter.
