It’s One of Those Mornings

That’s all I can say.

I had trouble getting up this morning, and felt a little congested, probably because I got a little drunk last night let down my immune system in the winter. Decided to have eggs for breakfast with all of the fixings. Decided to look for my missing sweater vest, and generally was running late.

Which of course made me miss the usual bus downtown, so I had to catch the later bus – the local Route 18. After riding the Route 719 bus to work the past month, it’s hard to get back on the local bus. I actually hate working late, because I so much prefer taking the express downtown.

Setting Sun Over Hudson River

Getting the bus I tripped on the step onto the bus. I almost fell. The air bag was frozen on the bus, so the bus wasn’t kneeling properly. Frozen bags in a bagged suspension aren’t uncommon occurance in the winter, although lately with improved CDTA’s bus maintenance program, they are pretty rare. They are more problematic when the bag suspension is frozen in the down position over one wheel, where it can rub or at least leave the bus angled at a 5-10 degrees from the normal position.

It was NOVA bus 9931 running on CDTA Route 18 leaving Shoprite to Downtown at 9 AM. So you’ve been warned.

Its a bright and sunny but cold for late February day. Good morning!

Kind of rough start to this Thursday morning, not helped by tripping on the bus step because the bus wasn't kneeling properly.

Why the Comcast-Netflix Deal Should Worry You.

It's increasingly obvious that the federal government needs to step up regulation of internet providers, and where natural monopolies exist, require providers to carry competing Internet providers over their wires.

Anticipation is More Fun then Consumption

I was listening to the β€œStuff You Should Know” podcast last night on the topic of “Do Objects or Experiences Make Us Happier”. They came to the conclusion that many of have to come to over the years – new toys buy happiness for a while before the fun of them wears off in a number of weeks. They estimated most things are fun for 6-12 weeks, but rapidly get boring after several weeks. Classic materialism.

10941_8020982142They went on to note that an experience can provide longer term enjoyment. With an experience, you not only have the experience, but also the memories of the experience. Thinking about it further, they noted that sometimes material things can give you an experience too… like thinking about the good times you had with that beloved car or truck of years ago. The material object may have been sent off to the junk yard and landfill, but good memories associated with a useful item last for much longer.

Coins and plant, isolated on white backgroundAnticipation of an experience or an material object can often be a lot of fun too. While our culture rarely puts a priority on delaying material consumption, there are many reasons to think it’s a good thing. Delayed consumption avoids debt, and lets people more time to consider what they really want or need. It also gives people to think about the value of it and enjoy the anticipation. Without spending money, you can dream of better days to come.

I've discovered its a lot more fun to save up for buying toys, then to ultimately go out and buy the toys and use them for actual experiences.

Good Afternoon! Happy Tuesday.

One day closer to the weekend. One more day closer to spring.

I think I have figured out the Google Maps Client-side geocoding, and should be able to get the solution live, so I can finally start titling the photos I took last few weeks, and get them posted to the blog.

Households with More then $1 Million in Investable Assets

The month is rapidly coming to an end. The most miserable month of year is finally coming to an end, and while March looks like it will be much colder and snowier then in recent memories, the biggest blasts of cold air and snow can’t be a match to the increasingly powerful sun as the earth’s rotation continues to shift as we move around the calender.

The sun is sticking out through the clouds, in a day that reminds me of most of them in early November. But we are moving closer to spring and not winter. Some snow squalls too.

The month is coming to an end. More cold weather, but one day closer to spring. Looking forward to the weekend.
