Taken on Sunday August 29, 2010 at Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. This is no fun for paddling through.
Taken on Sunday August 29, 2010 at Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. This was at the marshy end of the pond. The algae soup was not as bad in the center of the lake, but it still had a nasty green sheen to the whole lake. This is in the middle of Catskill Park, there are no farms or houses upstream, so I'm not sure if it was just the weather or poor practices from campers.
Taken on Sunday August 29, 2010 at Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. There is something pretty about this part of the Catskills and how the glaciers cut out round "scoops" out of the side of the mountains.

Taken on Sunday August 29, 2010 at Balsam Lake Mountain Wild Forest. It seems like Alder Pond is reverting back to marsh, or at least has some water quality issues. The pond was green from algae, which probably means it's overloaded from nutrients. Not much development around, maybe it's from campers doing their business too close to the pond? There are no outhouses here except the port-a-potty by the parking area.
