Walking it from the Emperor’s Plaza to Menands ๐Ÿšถ

Bussing it downtown today because I don’t want to get soaked on the evening commute riding home. Instead, I figure I’ll catch the early bus in and walk from the Plaza to my office in Menands for some steps. Figure that way I can skip the shuttle while getting more exercise in.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly cloudy and 38 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Thursday around 5 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I was told it was an impressive sunrise ๐ŸŒ… but I don’t have a good easterly view from my apartment. Pancakes with lots of ground carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and oatmeal in them topped with blueberries and real maple ๐Ÿ syrup. I wish I could be riding in today but walk from the Plaza to the office in the suburbs ๐Ÿข will be good. I catch the early bus in the morning so I have more time to walk. ๐Ÿšถ

Today will rain likely, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 48 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 24th. North wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 2010. 8.0 inches of snow fell back in 1924.โ„

So yes, it’s going to rain ๐Ÿ‘ฃ so best to get my steps in early. Yesterday I got my truck washed, ๐Ÿ›ปand stocked up on groceries. ๐Ÿ›’ Spent more than I would want to but that’s the normal thing with inflation. Pulled out some salmon from the freezer that will be dinner with some veggies. ๐ŸŸ๏ธ๐Ÿฅฆ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 52.5° from the due south horizon (-18.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:46 pm with the sun in the west (272°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (278°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:23 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:51 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:25 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 46 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly after 5am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 37 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 15th. Southeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2023, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1954.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Typical average high for the weekend is 55 degrees.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:32 pm with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 55 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.

If Not For the Empire Plaza

There are many critics of the Empire State Plaza. Many are revisionists of history or misplace their hopes in a city that could have survived without the state’s massive intervention by creating the Empire Plaza. But I have to wonder what would have happened to the City of Albany, had the Empire Plaza never been built, and the alternative of building out the suburban State Office Campus next to SUNY become a reality.

When the Governor’s Mansion downtown burned in 1961, a popular alternative was to build a new governor’s mansion in a more secure and accessible location in the suburban state office campus. Many state agencies were plan to move out there and expand there, leaving downtown to the Capitol and related legislative offices in the Alfred E Smith State Office Building. Many other state agencies were moving into buildings built out in the suburbs.

The question becomes could the city have sustained its downtown, with most of the state’s offices outside of it? Certainly as demand for cars grew from legislative employees, there would be an impetus to move even more of state government to a suburban location. Possibly even the Capitol building could have been put up for auction, and the state construct a modern, suburban office building for governmental roles.

Empire Plaza

While it’s true the Capitol was regarded a historic building in the 1960s, it was a derelict building without air conditioning or modern amenities like automatic elevators. It’s not clear that it would be worth saving a structure that while beautiful lacked parking, and was shifting and had an unstable foundation. There was poor traffic patterns around the Capitol, with no modern expressway connecting it to the Thruway and other important expressways. The state could have just put a suburban office building as it’s Capitol, abandoning the old and dated building, much like they had done with a previous Capitol buildings.

Without state government, downtown might have survived, but it would have been a struggle. The D&H Railroad was bankrupt by the late 1960s and the big banks were closing down shop downtown. Without state government making up some of the lost of private industry, could have downtown survived? Or would it have become increasingly ghettoized and abandoned, left decades before the masses rediscovered the cultural value of downtown living?

If the state hadn't decided to stay downtown and build the Empire Plaza, where would Albany be today?

The Alternative to the Empire State Plaza was the W. Averell Harriman Suburban Office Campus

It’s a popular thing to complain about the Empire State Plaza, and say the 1960s “modern” office complex in Downtown Albany is out of place or was overly destructive to the city. But was there really much of an alternative to building the Empire State Plaza? Could the state have just put up conventional office buildings along city streets in vacant lots?

Empire Plaza

But the reality is Nelson Rockefeller helped slow and ultimately reverse the decline of Downtown of Albany. By the early 1960s, state government was leaving downtown, as witnessed by the construction of the then modern W. Averell Harrimanย State Office Campus on lands of a former golf course on the outskirts of the city.

The W. Averell Harrimanย State Office Campus was a perfect example of what many people saw as the future — an office campus where commuters came in their private automobiles via a series of ring roads where there were no stop lights — just ramps and merge lanes. At the W. Averell Harrimanย State Campus there was ample parking for the cars that most middle-class state workers possessed, and wanted to use to get back and forth to work.

Empire Plaza

Downtown was the opposite. There was few parkingย opportunitiesย around the downtown office buildings. Traffic congestion was heavy, and commuters were forced to stop at every traffic light. There was no smooth flowing traffic, as even express traffic going in and around the city was forced to take city streets. Commuters who worked downtown, and the many people who came to the Capitol, didn’t want to have to fight traffic or spend hours looking for a parking spot — especially when such aย convenientย and sensible alternative as the W. Averell Harrimanย State Office Campus.

 Stack

Nelson Rockefeller in many ways was visionary. He argued that State Government could build a modern, suburban style office campus, with limited access, stop light freeย convenience,ย  and parking lot parking, in the middle of a dense city. Parking would be hidden in an underground garage at the Empire State Plaza, and connected to an Expressway system, that by using bridges would allow cars to “fly-over” city streets.

Old Capitol and Less Old Plaza

There are those who say the state could have instead built a series of tower buildings along vacant lots on State Street and other locations. Parking garages could be built behind the office buildings. That is how it was done in later years, often decades after the Empire Plaza was built. But that ignores the competition that the Empire Plaza was up against in it’s early years — the W. Averell Harriman, with it’s suburban ring-road, and traffic-light free commuting, and acres of easy parking.

Impact of Air Pollution

The state could have chosen to abandon downtown Albany in the early 1960s. After the Governor’s Mansion burned in 1963, it was proposed that it be moved to the W. Averell Harrimanย State Office Campus. Likewise, had the W. Averell Harrimanย campus been fully built out, many if not most of the offices in downtown, would have been moved to campus — rather then investing in downtown, and bringing thousands of state workers downtown every day.

As they say, it’s a wash โ˜”

At least if you go outside this morning you’ll get washed. Needless to say I’m taking the early express downtown and walking laps on the Concourse before catching the shuttle to the suburbanite office with acres of parking.

Good morning! What day is it? A Rainy Day, of course. Rain and 40 degrees at the Stewart’s. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ There is a southeast breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 21 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

So it’s back to walking ๐Ÿšถ the Plaza for an hour before work. I wonder how many buckets they’ll have out catching leaks from the roof. Even a two billion dollar building leaks. Still beats walking in the rain. Eggs ๐Ÿฅš for breakfast with sweet onions ๐Ÿง… and Chipotle spices. I hear bird flu is back ๐Ÿฅ so my favorite source of cheap healthy quick to cook protein is going up in price, like everything in this world today. Paying back for the good times of the pandemic.

Today will rain. ๐ŸŒง High of 40 degrees at 7am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 2nd. East wind 11 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1981. 11.0 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

The salmon was good last night ๐ŸŸ, haven’t had that in a while. It’s good to have some more omega 3s. Not as easy to cook as canned sardines or tuna but it’s good to mix thlngs up. That second loaf ๐Ÿž of bread I made up on Sunday night was exceptionally tasty. Read ๐Ÿ“– for a while and went to bed ๐Ÿ› around 8 pm. Just working my way through another week. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ One step at a time. I wish it wasn’t raining so I could ride to work more of the week.

After filing my taxes ๐Ÿ’ฐ I was reviewing them and realized that I had made a mistake again on my state forms and swapped a number and will overpay the state by $400. It’s fine, I budgeted $1,600 for taxes as I knew that’s what I would owe due to the dividends and interest due to the higher interest rates. Sucks but I did fairly well with the higher rates last year. So either the tax department will catch my mistake or I’ll file an admemded return later in the year to get my money back.

Tonight will rain, snow, and sleet before 4am, then rain between 4am and 5am, then rain and snow after 5am. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Low of 35 degrees at 10pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 7th. Northeast wind 10 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1954.

I was tracing out some code at work yesterday , ๐Ÿ–ฅ it was just insane. If you were at a certain zip code on a certain street in Westchester, you raise flag ๐Ÿšฉ number 31. Then you shift several digits to a buffer and then other digits from another field and combine it with data from another buffer. It was absolutely insane but after studying it for a half hour I realized it was doing. But much like life, data is messy and often complicated to clean up. But goddammit, use comments in your source code to explain the madness. ๐Ÿคฌ The one upside is I am getting good at reading and writing C code. I might not be a programmer ๐Ÿค“ but I’m putting my skills to good work.

Cool but with improving conditions this weekend. ๐ŸŒค๏ธSaturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 45. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 52. Typical average high for the weekend is 55 degrees. Staying in town this weekend but who knows about future ๐Ÿ”ฎ weekends. I am thinking I might do the Green Mountains more this year as some ways it’s more convenient from my office. Also thinking about one more trip to the East Branch Sacandaga River before the black flies are out should it warm up this spring. ๐ŸŒธ

Looking ahead, next Wednesday is 8 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 7:33 pm. On that day in 2023, we had sunny and temperatures between 67 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1922.

South East as Skies Clear

Looks like we’re also going to miss this snow storm. ๐ŸŒจ

Maybe they’ll be some snow. I’m going to try to ride in early this morning on my bike but it depends how slick the trail gets and how much snow comes down in the morning squall. The alternative I guess is to head in early and walk laps at the Empire State Plaza.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a north breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Up at five o’clock, no I don’t use an alarm โฐ clock. My body just naturally wakes up at that hour as I go to bed ๐Ÿ› early. Decided to do eggs ๐Ÿฅš with broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ and spinach along with some leftover ham ๐Ÿฝ that I had in my fridge. Plus some mango. ๐Ÿ A bit of coffee โ˜• but I’m cutting back as I had to pee ๐Ÿšป all day yesterday. Last night was salmon and broccoli. Went for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ and read ๐Ÿ“– more of Paved Paradise, How Parking has Defined the World on the Libby app. Trying to do more reading again.

Sunny and cold

Happy Final Friday of January 2024! โ˜”

Kind of a wet one to flush away the month of January. I’m up early walking laps on the Concourse in the Emperor’s Plaza. I was thinking if I wanted to do some cardio I could do the stairs in LOB, though truth be told I’ll be here come midday for diversity training and then I’m going to work the rest of the day in my old office.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Heavy rain and 38 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ There is a southeast breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Not much snow left after the warm temperatures and the rspTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

For some reason I didn’t sleep well last night ๐Ÿ› so I’m up early walking ๐Ÿšถ the Plaza. I just find it hard to sleep with the windows closed and I need another night in the wilderness but alas it’s January for a few more days and the woods is going to be a mosh pit after all the rain of recent. ๐Ÿฝ I have diversity training today, so I’ll need to stay awake for that. And lots more reports to run. I need to figure out how to get Docker running on my work machine ๐Ÿค– to automate that further.

Breakfast this morning was pancakes ๐Ÿฅž made from carrots ๐Ÿฅ• and apples with some egg and whole wheat flour for binder with cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice and honey ๐Ÿฏ to top. Then I decided I was still hungry and wanted some protein, so I had some Greek yogurt and strawberries ๐Ÿ“ as a side. โ˜• Looking forward to more coffee when I get in the office. Last night it was pea soup ๐Ÿฅฃ with carrot bread which came out so moist and tender, reminded me almost of carrot cake. By the end of the week I think I will have eaten nearly five pounds of carrots.

Today will rain, mainly before 10am. Patchy fog after 5pm. ๐ŸŒง High of 43 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 9th. Southeast wind 6 to 10 mph becoming northeast in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1950. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1949.โ„

Bike ride in and hike was good, ๐Ÿšฒ though on a cloudy day like yesterday it was darker than I would have preferred for riding across the Water Street Bridge. Didn’t help there was a bunch of debris from crashes on the shoulder. I should have enough time that in the future I might ride through Corning Preserve ๐Ÿž and over the pedestrian bridge as an alternative.

I’m getting used to suburban office ๐Ÿข with its acres parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ which everybody tells me is a good thing but I find it hard to believe. I just find the corporate architecture to be so soul depraving with the acres of cubicles, florescent lighting and the very square windows that are few and far between. At least I can make it work with the buses ๐Ÿš and it’s an easier bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride. I enjoyed riding in yesterday and riding down to the river at lunch time, โ˜บ It will be nice come summer. Acres of parking probably is good if I’m planning on going out of town after work.

I do think I’m doing good work, ๐Ÿ–ฅ putting my data science skills and Unix knowledge to hood work in the new position. Change is good, I think I’m rapidly getting up to skill. Plus it’s a good resume builder as I can say I’m using Unix text utilities, SQL and R processing in a o

 Woodstock Road

I thought about going for a early morning bike ride ๐Ÿšฒ ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐Ÿšถ

But changed my mind in favor of going in on the early bus and walking laps on the Plaza. I’ve been having a lot of trouble this winter with cold numb hands when I go out walking and riding this year. Maybe I need heavier gloves but it’s not pleasant to get home have sore fingers and struggle to unlock and open the door.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Cloudy and 17 degrees in Delmar. โ˜ Calm wind. Still a cold morning. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out next Tuesday around 8 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธThis weekend is going to ducking ๐Ÿฆ† cold.

Breakfast was onions, canned green beans, canned ๐Ÿฅซ tomatoes and eggs ๐Ÿฅš. It’s what I had and with some spices it was pretty good. My pantry is completely void of fruit ๐ŸŒ after today’s lunch and the vegetables aren’t much more plentiful unless you count the canned stuff I primarily have for camping. ๐Ÿ›’ I plan to go shopping tomorrow, though a lot depends on whether I’m getting filmed ๐Ÿ“ผ for the Rezsin Adams documentary tomorrow.

Wanted to catch the earliest express downtown ๐Ÿš but I ended up catching the second express downtown after walking down to the Park and Ride. ๐Ÿšถ I want to try to get in at least 7,000 steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ before settling in my office this morning. I’m a bit concerned about how sore and numb my hands ๐Ÿ‘ get from the cold now โ„ but I realize I’m getting older, my body is wearing out and frankly I probably need better gloves ๐Ÿงค. The Plaza will be nice to walk inside.

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 11am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 22 degrees at 12pm. 10 degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming north 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1929. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.โ„

All week I’ve been dealing with not only cold fingers but also anxiety ๐Ÿฅถ as it’s been a tough adjustment to all that is new in my life. Its just such a different experience working out in a suburban office environment, much more of a corporate office culture with less opportunities for creativity. It’s tough learning all the new faces, ๐Ÿ‘ฅ the culture and the technical nature of the work. โš™ I’m doing good I guess though I wish I had known the VIM editor better which is so much a big part of my new position. Fortunately I’m pretty good at most of the other parts of the job like the bash shell, SQL, data tidying. ๐Ÿ–ฅ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 27° from the due south horizon (-43.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the southwest (235°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:52 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 5:22 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (125°) at an altitude of 58° from the horizon, 233,485 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:57 pm. At sunset, look for snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 22 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 51 seconds over today.

Last night ๐ŸŒƒ I made it up until almost 9 pm last night, as I went for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ and then laid in bed ๐Ÿ› for a while listening to a podcast ๐ŸŽง about the rise of homeschooling in America. ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿšธ I think it was NPR Fresh Air. But I can’t blame parents when most schools these days are Confined Education Operations Systems (CEOs), designed primarily to waste taxpayer dollars ๐Ÿ’ต and prepare the youth of tomorrow for working in acre sized bull pens next to 5 acres of parking off of the freeway interchange in the suburbs. ๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ

Tonight will be really cold. That’s relatively speaking. We will have a slight chance of snow showers before 11pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 9 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -4 at 5am; Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2023, we had light rain. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1970.

This evening I think I will go down to the library ๐Ÿ“š pick up the damaged books that I reimbursed the library for and work on my laptop for a while. It is a good way to get some steps in and then head to bed relatively early. ๐Ÿ˜ด Tomorrow is going to be cold, but I will make the best of it.

I’ve been quite impressed how smoothly the transfer has been between the shuttle and the express bus. ๐ŸšŒ ๐Ÿ”› ๐Ÿš There is a only a few minutes between the buses but so far I’ve always made the transfer without issue, plus there is a warm place to wait in the Concourse bus station. Works out much better then I expect. ๐Ÿ˜€ My commute remains the same as before time wise, about 40 minutes, leaving and getting home at the same time, without the late nights. The drive in would be 20 minutes, but that doesn’t include time cleaning off snow and ice, warming the truck up or parking. So really taking the bus is a win-win.

Tomorrow will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 17 degrees at 1pm. 15 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -6 at 6am; Northwest wind 11 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 2006. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 2019.โ„

Looking ahead to Sunday, sunny and cold, with a high near 23. โ˜€ Northwest wind around 15 mph. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees. Probably going out to see the folks then, ๐Ÿ‘ช and maybe do a hike earlier in the day, if I bundle up. But with my problem with my fingers getting cold, this seems less fun then in years past.

When there is no hope, there are 2 weeks until Ground Hog Day ๐Ÿป when the sun will be setting at 5:10 pm with dusk at 5:39 pm. I bet he will see his shadow. On that day in 2023, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 36 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 53 back in 1981.
