LED Streetlights Are Giving Neighborhoods the Blues

LED Streetlights Are Giving Neighborhoods the Blues

"For some, those first LED lights have been a fiasco. The harsh glare of certain blue-rich designs is now thought to disrupt people’s sleep patterns and harm nocturnal animals. And these concerns have been heaped on the complaints of astronomers, who as far back as 2009 have criticized the new lights. That’s the year the International Dark-Sky Association, a coalition that opposes light pollution, started worrying that blue-rich LEDs could be β€œa disaster for dark skies and the environment,” says Chris Monrad, a director of IDA and a lighting consultant in Tucson."

"When my city of Newton, Mass., announced plans to install LED streetlights in 2014, I was optimistic. I’m all for energy conservation, and I was happy with the LED bulbs in my home office. But months later, returning from a week’s vacation in rural Maine, I was shocked to find my neighborhood lit by a stark bluish blaze that washed out almost all of the stars in the night sky."

"Lately, lighting companies have introduced LED streetlights with a warmer-hued output, and municipalities have begun to adopt them. Some communities, too, are using smart lighting controls to minimize light pollution. They are welcome changes, but they’re happening none too soon: An estimated 10 percent of all outdoor lighting [PDF] in the United States was switched over to an earlier generation of LEDs, which included those problematic blue-rich varieties, at a potential cost of billions of dollars."

After Controversy Over Condolence Calls, Can Trump And The White House Refocus?

"Part of the problem for Americans is the disconnect Panetta highlights between the military and the rest of society. In 1945, just before the end of World War II, there were 12 million active servicemembers. Now, there are just over a million or so."

"They're the best 1 percent this country produces," White House Chief of Staff John Kelly said Thursday in his defense of President Trump in the White House briefing room.

"It's actually less than 1 percent. That number in 1945 represented roughly 9 percent of the country's total population. Now, the number of active-duty servicemembers is only about 0.4 percent of the population."

"Most of you, as Americans, don't know them," Kelly continued. "Many of you don't know anyone that knows any one of them."

"Americans are far less engaged in the debate over worldwide American missions than they likely would be if they had a daughter or son or neighbor in the fight. That has to have an effect on American society and policymaking."

Little Rock City Road

October 23, 2017 8 AM Update

54 degrees with increasing clouds now. It looks like today will be cloudy but rather mild once again with the mercury pushing 70 or maybe breaking it in the city. Already the once very sunny once it rose morning is turning to clouds. It’s back to work in a work that seems so less rugged and more hustled than the back country of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Albany seems so domesticated and busy compared to the land I’ve spent my past week in. Much more color too.

The sun will set at 5:59 pm with dusk around 6:28 pm, which is one minute and 29 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 67 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 11pm. Cloudy, with a low of 63 degrees at 9pm. 26 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2am. South wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1969.

Wednesday morning I have my dental cleaning appointment so I will be in the office late a bit that day. I still have to tell my supervisor but I don’t think it will be a big deal. It’s good to do more to maintain my teeth.

Today in 1973, President Richard M. Nixon agrees to turn over subpoenaed audio tapes of his Oval Office conversations. Happy Watergate Day if you can say that. I guess us democrats were happy about that but the whole affair was a blot on our country, even though many of the things Nixon did look like child play compared to the TRUMP.

There is one month until Thanksgiving when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). The average high temperature is 57 degrees, with a record high of 81 in 1947.

October 23, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Back to work from me after vacation. Albany is definitely not West Virignia. Partly cloudy and 51 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. Pretty mild morning and a pretty nice day on tap. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Today will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 3pm. South wind 7 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1947. 0.5 inches of snow fell back in 2002.

The sun comes up late this time of year but it’s quite mild this morning. Get out, enjoy it
