Tulip Time!

November 18, 2018 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to First Sunday of Advent ✝️. Christmas is always special, especially when it’s more of a religious holiday or celebration of the winter solstice then consumerism. Time goes by quickly, 40 days or so until the New Year.

Gray, cloudy and 33 degrees in Delmar. ☁ Calm wind. Things are melting quickly with only 2 inches of snow left on the ground. β˜ƒ ️

Today will have a slight chance of snow before 2pm, then a chance of rain and snow between 2pm and 4pm, then a chance of snow after 4pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 36 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 14th. Kind of a cold mid November day. Light and variable wind. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9 inches of snow fell back in 1980.❄

The sun will set at 4:29 pm with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for snow showers around 🌨 with temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 38 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be light snow likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy 🌨, with a low of 30 degrees at 2am. One degree below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around November 21st. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. In 2017, we had light rain in the evening, remaining overcast into the early morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 12 occurred back in 1972.

This afternoon I plan to upload a bunch of new maps and GIS content. 🌐 I often struggle to find new areas to map, especially when I’ve done so much of New York and not knowing other states as well and requiring separate data sets makes it a pain to do them.

I also need to find new data to chart, which isn’t that difficult but it requires me to sit down somewhere I have internet and get it done. Maybe I should plan sometime this week to do that down at the library.

I promise not to complain so much on my blog this week, but winters are so harsh and cold and the heat doesn’t work well in my apartment.😯 Never has. I’m hoping at some point it will warm up and be sunny, 😎 I think that would improve my mood enormously. I’m just cranky because winter came early, its been a tough few weeks at work and the holiday season doesn’t do much for me. And I’m just pissed that I blew off camping last weekend before the heavy snow came. Spring will return eventually. I should look at it this way, I’m saving a lot of miles on my truck and investing in my future.

I’ve decided with all the USB stuff that I have at this point, I really need a powered USB hub for at home do I’m not overwhelming my laptop’s USB port. 🔌 I want one with switches so I can disable things like my keyboard when my laptop is off to save power. I’m thinking that I can also use it to power my VMS display at home.

Still also looking at SSD hard drives for my laptop💾 to speed it up enormously and give me more room with all the videos I do. So far the Black Friday sales on Buy Nothing day are only like $140 which is only ten dollars less than the ordinary retail price. That said I do want to go to the SSD drive before the end of the year so I have more space actually twice as much as I’m putting the M2 drive in that slot while retaining my existing drive. It should make map making much quicker as will it help loading any large file.

I also need some more Lolin32 development boards for projects and a 12 volt power supply for the reading and wake up light I’m building over my bed using warm white LED tape that I got sent to me a few weeks ago from China. Like my other lights it will be Arduino controlled and have a timer to wake me up on dark weekday mornings. I think I will be in the poor house by the time I do all that especially if I decide to buy that big certificate of deposit at the end of the month. More shivering at home and doing things for free like walking places I guess. I have plenty of food for now and gas in my truck so I can avoid spending there, I expect the state inspection to go well later in the month, no repairs needed. After I filled the tires up in the truck three noisys stopped.

My neices Christmas gift is almost finished once I finish soldering in the ultraviolet black light LEDs, finish the code, and get some glow in the dark spray paint for some of the glass beads. ✨The heavy glass star coffee table decoration I’m building turns various colors, blinks and flashes, and uses black light to make anything florescent nearby glow aggressively.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until First Sunday of Advent ✝️ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 41 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1998.

May 22, 2018 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy but some breaks in the clouds so you can see the moon and 57 degrees inside my bedroom in Delmar, NY according to the display. 🌃There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 46 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 7 am.

Almost a bit cool to be sitting outside but I still like the fresh air and watching the faint artificial firefly lights dance on the lawn and the trees. Just sitting back listening to some music, ruminating about the day that was. I mean I have to use some of that free solar power I got today or otherwise tomorrow’s sunlight will just be discarded by solar controller. 🌝I checked and despite the clouds and rain the panel was still topping off the battery. It’s kind of pretty and calming but the damn motor in the firefly light is so noisy. 🐸Fine when you have headphones on but it does kind of disturb the peace.

Today wasn’t a half bad day at work. I expected a long day but that was not to be, I caught the five o’clock express bus home.💼 Moreover tomorrow is not a session day so no need to dress up. Going to be a nice morning tomorrow so I may try to get an early start😎 and walk down to the express bus.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 4am. Patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, cloudy☁ , with a low of 56 degrees at 2am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 5am. South wind 5 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2017, we had cloudy skies, clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1967.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 with 62% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:37 am. The Flower Moon 🌕 is on Monday night with mostly clear skies. Definitely can smell the lilacs out back. The sun will rise at 5:25 am with the first light at 4:52 am, which is 48 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 43 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny β˜€, with a high of 81 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 55 at 6am. Northwest wind 8 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 73 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1964.

Made some Macaroni and Cheese for dinner with a bunch of broccoli. A little bit more high calorie than I normally eat at home but I wanted a change. I get tired of having to find easy to cook meals with low packaging waste that is affordable. I guess I should take another look at the store and get more creative. I always try to have a big portion of vegetables in every meal.

Tonight I went down to the library and uploaded a few new Google Maps to the blog and another chart. I admit that I should do a lot more of that but I’ve gotten tired of that as I’ve mapped and graphed much of what I can get off interesting public data. I should do more digging bit I’m lazy.🐷 Maybe I should come up with some more. At least I have some things ready for the next few days and after which I will either have to make more or dig in the archives for past things folks have long forgotten.

Well, at least three first half of Memorial Day Weekend looks nice.😾 Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6pm. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees.

I think I’m going camping in the Adirondacks but where is to be decided. Still thinking about the Wells or Speculator area but with it going to be so warm Saturday, Pisceo Powley seems quite appealing too. β›ΊFishing opportunities are better in Wells though under the dam. Might come back Sunday if it’s a complete washout. Decided to skip kayaking for this trip, I’d rather just park the truck for the weekend, and walk everywhere from camp to save gas, especially now that I expect the solar panel to keep things charged. Plus I get tired of driving all the time.

Got a bunch of books out of the library to read over the long weekend. I plan to spend much of my weekend reading. I really don’t read enough these days. 📚 You can learn much from a good book. Having a smartphone is kind of a big distraction although at least I don’t have regular internet or television at home.

In four weeks on June 19 the sun will be setting at 8:36 pm,🌄 which is 18 minutes and 7 seconds later then tonight. Almost the latest sunset of the year. In 2017 on that day, we had thunderstorm, thunderstorm rain, rain, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 83 and 68 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 58 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1995.

Decided to buy another six of those FC 16 Max7219 modules from China,🎎 this time in green. I want to build a third large VMS display to use downstairs or for other projects. 💻Set me back $27 as the green modules are somewhat more expensive than the red ones. They also make blue ones but they are even more expensive as they have a different forward voltage than the standard red or even green ones. There may be cheaper LED displays available but these are big enough to be easily read across the room, don’t use much power and can be powered over USB and are well supported by Arduino libraries.

Looking ahead, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 2 weeks, Average High is 80 🏖 is a month away, Election Day 2018 🗳️ is in 24 weeks, Thanksgiving 🦃 is in 6 months, Christmas 🎅 is in 31 weeks, New Years Day 2019 🎉 is in 32 weeks, 36th Birthday 🎉 is in 36 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 128 weeks.

🇺🇸🦅Only 2 days remain until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!🦅🇺🇸

April 14, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Next Saturday is Earth Day 🌎. No kids, Rolling Coal doesn’t cause global warming. Mostly cloudy and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a north breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. A big gust of breeze came by and it’s cloudy to the north with sun to the south. Temperatures will drop below freezing around 1 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Today will have a chance of rain, mainly after 3pm. Mostly cloudy,β›… with a temperature falling to around 37 by 5pm. North wind 13 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had sunny skies. The high last year was 64 degrees. Not this year though. The record high of 83 was set in 1968. 1.4 inches of snow fell back in 1950.❄ Hardly something to write back home about.

The sun will set at 7:36 pm with dusk around 8:06 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for clouds ☁ and 36 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain before 2am, then freezing rain and sleet. β˜” Low of 32 degrees at 2am. Five degrees below normal. Leave your windshield wipers up and prepare to wash your car off again this week. North wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no ice accumulation expected. New sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2017, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1940.

It was nice down at the Town Park last night. 🌳Rather than stare at a screen, I brought a book📖 I had purchased years ago and was re-reading about renewable energy.📘Reading really is a very enjoyable thing especially with the fresh air down at the park. Reading this older book reminded me how much things have changed over the past decade. 🔧🔩 Certainly lighting technology has changed dramatically over the years, but most of the book is still quite relevant. People don’t think about insulation and vapor barriers but in many cases it’s actually more important to an energy efficient house than solar panels or fancy light bulbs. 🔋I don’t have the knowledge or the skills to do much home building but I am definitely interested in the electrical side of things, especially low voltage. 📟 I’m trying to become more educated though over the next ten years or so.

Starting to see green popping up at the park but it still gets dark quite early – about the same time that is common in late August.🌃 One of these days I’m going to do a chart or table on the blog that shows what one day’s average is most similar to the autumn season. 🎆For example, a 60 degree day in April is similar to certain day in October or a 7:30 sunset in April is equal to 7:30 sunset in early September. Not a difficult thing to calculate per se but quite fascinating.

I was going to have a beer out back but I don’t think the accessory battery has been fully charged in a while,β›” so the protective relay has shut off the lights to the truck cap.🔋 I really need to get that solar panel mounted so it trickle charges all week long. 🚒Plus I’ve really cut back on drinking because it’s expensive and I have so little extra money to piss away🍺 and plus I wanted to work on wiring up the board I’m building.

Soldered on the pin headers for another Arduino Nano and are in the process of building another board for driving another of those MAX 7219 displays like the one that is now in my office. 💻I have the parts to build several more and this one will be an improved model with a 32kb external eeprom to allow many more random strings and quotes.⚑ I’m thinking of skipping the case on this one and mounting the display directly to the wall. I quit soldering last night when I discovered I had a dead short that I’m struggling to find.🔬 I’m going to keep unsoldering and testing leads to find where I’ve accidentally either burnt off insulation or caused a solder bridge. 🔎It’s not apparent where the problem is from studying the connections with the big magnifying glass built-in with my helping hands unit.

I think today is going to be a pretty busy day with work, but I’m hopeful I will be home before the freezing rain comes.💦 I think the risk of rain has fallen around here at least for today. But I’m going to watch the forecast like a hawk and as things evolve I’ll plan my day accordingly.👀 I struggle to accept that we are still dealing with winter crap now that calendar winter is in the rear view mirror and summer is closer than Ground Hog Day.

Still thinking but not 100% certain if after the Pine Bush hike if I will go up to the Adirondacks to fish and camp. β›Ί Depends a whole lot on the weather. At this point, what’s one more week if I can get a full weekend of camping out of it or maybe even a three day weekend.🎣 By then the sun will be setting later too which is a good thing.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Earth Day 🌎 when the sun will be setting at 7:44 pm with dusk at 8:14 pm. On that day in 2017, we had rain, drizzle, mist, cloudy skies and temperatures between 57 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1923.

April 12, 2018 – Next Sixteen Weeks

While lately it’s been pretty cool to start out the spring season, the weather is slowly but surely moderating.🌼🌻🌹🌺 This time of year sees the quickest average increases in warmth, and indeed with the lack of freezing temperatures over the next week, we should soon start to see some greening up of the landscape, at least in the city.

Spring maybe a little over five and half weeks away, slowly but surely we are climbing out of the bleak of winter.β˜ƒ By March, temperatures in the 40s are common, and indeed sometimes we get weather in the 50s, 60s, and 70s.🌲 Who know how many much snow we get in March, it can very a lot from year to year.🌻

January 26, 2018 – Next Sixteen Weeks

Slowly but surely we are climbing out of the deep and dark of winter. At this point average temperatures will be increasing about a degree each week, then will start accelerating as we get to mid-February as spring approaches. When March gets underway, days in the 40s will not be uncommon and by April many days may hit the fifties. It’s called spring, and it eventually thaws out.

In the evening, you will notice we are past the five PM sunset, with daylight growing to 10 hours a day by next week. Seven weeks out from now will be daylight savings time with it not getting pitch black until well into the seven o’clock hour.
