Fifty years later, effects of Silver Bridge disaster still felt

Fifty years later, effects of Silver Bridge disaster still felt

"Fifty years ago Friday, just before 5 p.m., 37 vehicles occupied by 64 people β€” a blend of local Christmas shoppers, long-haul truckers and commuting workers β€” were crossing the Ohio River between Point Pleasant and Kanauga, Ohio, on the Silver Bridge."

"As a stoplight on Sixth Street in Point Pleasant kept a long line of southbound traffic stalled on the span, a noise, described by some as a very loud gunshot and by others as a whooshing roar, echoed through the Mason County river town."

Silver Bridge

Silver Bridge

"The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge carried U.S. Route 35 over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed while it was full of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Two of the victims were never found. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) deep. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and had been poorly maintained."

December 15, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy and 10 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Definitely a cold start to a cold, salt encrusted day.

Today will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 26 degrees at 2pm. 10 degrees below normal. South wind 3 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had light snow. The high last year was 27 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968.

The sun will set at 4:23 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 17 seconds later than yesterday. Sunsets are getting noticeably later or so I tell myself.   At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 24 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 24 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow after 4am. Mostly cloudy, with a low of 17 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 16 at 6pm; South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, we had light snow in the evening, remaining overcast into the early morning. It got down to one degree. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1917.

There are 1 month until Martin Luther King Day when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:19 pm. The average high temperature is 32 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. It’s definitely cold in January although possibly warmer than today.

So the Caneada Chicken I made for the holiday party is ready. I was looking for a Western NY theme and decided Caneadea sounded better than Canaseraga. Both are hick towns in Allegany County, but Caneadea means where the heavens rest on earth. Next autumn I want to spend more time exploring Western NY.

Tomorrow is the Save the Pine Bush hike which should be fun, assuming you are properly dressed. Continued cold this weekend. Hopefully I will get the lead solder so I can get my circuit board properly assembled.

I’m almost to work, so have a great day. Tomorrow is the weekend!
