This past weekend I camped about 1 mile from the wilderness boundary and 1 mile from Whitehouse on West River Road. This well maintained road has been proposed to be closed for at least 40 years, but it's still a nice drive to many popular campsites.
Driving along the West Branch of the Sacandaga River on West River Road about halfway between Whitehouse and Wells in the Adirondack Park.
It kills tree trunks when you nail a tree and hang a propane or liquid fuel lantern on them from the heat. Instead, run a rope or bungee cords between the trees to minimize your impact.
Doing some bushwhacking around the open fields and i stumbled upon ripe blueberries. I guess that time of year has come for the Adirondacks.
Often over looked, Auger Flats is a 2-3 mile flat water on the Sacandaga River, north of Auger Falls. To access it, you drive to the Auger Falls Parking Area, then head to the back of the parking area, and to a trail that leads to the quiet section of the Sacandaga River. From there, you have at least 9/10th of a mile paddle before the first portage, and probably can go about two miles beyond that before it becomes rapids again.
"A roundabout in rural Wisconsin is tricked out with decorative brick, intense landscaping and a "complete street" despite there being little to no chance of pedestrians. This is happening while funds for urban improvements -- where there actually are people walking -- remain elusive."
