How trees ‘talk’ to each other using fungi

"The fungi and the trees are in a mutually beneficial relationship: the fungi cannot photosynthesize, as they have no access to light and no chlorophyll. So they get a type of sugar produced in photosynthesis and carbon from the trees.
In return for sugar and carbon, fungi release nutrients such as phosphorous and nitrogen, as well as water, to the trees. It's a win-win."

"Furthermore, the fungi will connect one tree to another through their network, which allows them to defend themselves more effectively."

"Trees that get attacked by bugs, for instance, release chemical signals into the fungi. Neighboring trees pick up these signals and increase their own resistance to the threat."

February 9, 2017 8 AM Update

“On days like this it’s more important that your car is generally going the direction you desire then the nose of the car is pointing in the right direction on the road.”

We’re slip sliding out way into our Thursday. Already the mercury has dropped to 21 degrees on our way down to 8 degrees later and it’s going to get windy later. Not a blizzard but we are pushing that way. Three to seven more inches before it’s done. I’m not sure if we will break the 1906 record of 13.1 inches but we are pushing that way. The cold is really pushing upwards the snow to liquid ratios, probably upwards of 15 inches of snow per inch of moisture. Did I mention 2-3 inches of snow on Friday evening and now Sunday may be a snow event dropping an additional 8 inches of snow based on the latest models?

Hello, winter.

Tonight the sun will set at 5:20 pm with dusk around 5:49 pm, which is 1 minutes and 19 seconds later than yesterday. Today will have 10 hours and 21 minutes of daylight, an increase of 1 minutes and 36 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 7pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low of 9 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal. Wind chill values as low as -4. Northwest wind 8 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2016, it got down to 23 degrees with periods of snow. The record low of -21 occurred back in 1948.

The bus is crowded but we making good progress heading downtown. The big challenge will be climbing the hill by Hackett Middle School, but with a modern bus with traction control and some luck with the timing of the traffic light I’m sure we’ll climb it, although maybe sideways. If we don’t, I guess I can walk from there to work. The city has applied some sand and Delaware Avenue decently plowed. They have less snow than in Delmar.

There is 1 month until Palm Sunday when the sun will be setting at 7:31 pm with dusk at 8:00 pm (Daylight Savings Time).

Snow

Started my mile walk to the express bus downtown. Nearly a foot of snow here. Turned back, I need my big boots. Going to take the local. Lots of snow!

February 9, 2017 Morning

It’s here. Snow has arrived and its snowing hard. Roads are snow covered. Drive safely.”

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Snow and 22 degrees in Delmar. There is a north breeze at 9 mph. The skies will clear around 5 pm.

Today will snow, mainly before 2pm. The snow could be heavy at times. High of 23 degrees at 7am. 10 degrees below normal. North wind 9 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible. A year ago, we had snow and a high of 32 degrees. The record high of 57 was set in 1925. 13.7 inches of snow fell back in 1906.
