December 2, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Cyber Monday 🛍๏ธ! Next Monday is Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ. Light snow and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a north breeze at 11 mph. 🍃. There are 13 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธEverything is shutdown because it’s winter and they seem to do that a lot more these days. But what I do know I live in the city and the bus runs come sun, rain or snow. At any rate, the snow ain’t expected to last long. Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡๏ธ Sun too out tomorrow โ˜€ which help with the melting process. I am going to glue the tips of my skis 🎿 as I expect snow to be around for the weekend.

I mean I’m not complaining that much about being stuck home 🏡, it beats trudging through the snow to the catch the bus which is most likely running behind schedule although it depends on route as the 8:25 has a pretty good layover before the start so it runs close to time. Today I’m going to work on some maps and do some reading 📖, finishing up the book I got on butchering 🔪and of course ride the exercise bike. 🚲 Sometimes being stuck home can be boring without a television 📺 or the interwebs. 💻 I bet the library is closed today as everything is closed today.

At some point I’ll dig out my truck 🚚, and get the ton of snow off the roof before anymore accumulates. โ„ This way with the warm temperatures and sun โ˜€ later in the week I’ll be able to have the truck clear of snow come Saturday. Landlord is digging out my door now so hopefully it should be easy to get out once later on to dig out my truck. Mostly want to clean off the truck cap roof and solar panel and maybe the hood – the rest will hopefully melt away this week. 💧After I do that I want to take apart and clean the propane lantern 🏮 in hopes of getting that working properly again. Last time used it was burning dirty and dim, this past weekend winter camping I couldn’t even get to start. 🙍

Today will continue to have periods of snow. โ›„ It’s stopped for now but it is expected to pick up later today. The snow could be heavy at times. 🀼/strong>󚀠High of 32 degrees at 9am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 27th. North wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.2 inches of snow fell back in 1949.โ„

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 18 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 31 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 22 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be periods of snow, mainly before 4am. The snow could be heavy at times. 🌨 Low of 22 degrees at 5am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 13th. North wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1976.

Tomorrow I have to wear a suit and tie to work 👔which means I have to polish my shoes and iron my shirt and pants. I might wear the boots 👢 in though because I don’t know how clear the sidewalks will be by morning. It would be bad to arrive to the meeting tomorrow and be covered with road salt and with wet dress shoes. That said, it looks like the snow will be pulling out relatively early this evening so the crews should get a lot of it cleaned up by morning.

I ordered a replacement cellphone cradle for my truck on Aliexpress. 📱 The ones I saw at Walmart were like ten times as expensive – I get the convenience factor but I can’t imagine spending more than $10 on something that is a plastic device that you clip your phone to the vent in your truck. Also ordered that voltage sensative control module I linked to yesterday. 🔌 I will use that to feed power to the starting battery whenever I have excess power on the solar panel to ensure its automatically topped off when camping multiple days with the engine off.

Cool this weekend with temperatures running 6 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜€ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 29. That’s cold for early January but not unheard of for December. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. I’m going to fix my skis🎿so I can use them for the weekend. Typical average high for the weekend is 39 degrees.

Warmer next week and we might have rain a week from now which would do a number on the snow โ˜” but it’s so far out it could be rain, snow or nothing. I’m rooting for 45 degrees but I know the snowmobilers ain’t as their season opens after big game closes on Sunday.

As previously noted, next Monday is Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:21 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2018, we had snow and temperatures between 33 and 27 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 1966.

Towards Vermont

October 1, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy October ๐Ÿ›ฅ! Five weeks to Election Day 2019 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ. Heavy on the rain and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. Got soaked picking up my truck. More rain though Wednesday and Thursday, might pull us out of the rain deficit. โ˜” There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 55 degrees. The skies will clear around 3 pm.

Picked up Big Red from the shop. ๐Ÿš™ Some of the pads were fairly worn one was pretty bad, I doubt I would have mad it back from West Virginia without some serious grinding. Plus the squeaking noise would have driven me to the loony bin well before then. I bet the mental health facilities in rural West Virginia probably aren’t that great. But the truck drives quiet now. I was thinking the old rotators would have been a good thing to stick under my camp stove to keep it from melting my table but they’re so heavy. Might make excellent weights for tying down a tarp. I might save the just for the scrap yard. I appreciate the estimate at the shop included all tax and fees, as lot of shops don’t include that. I got to learn to do my own brakes — they aren’t that difficult to do, but I often know it can be hard to free up really rusted, salt encrusted metal.

Wore the black boots ๐Ÿ‘ข today. With the rain and because of wearing my black shirt I thought they would look nice. I trying to reserve the black boots for work and the brown boots for wearing at home.ย I really got soaked picking up my truck.ย I could barely see out my windshield driving home, the new brakes got baptized by the rain. But they stop well and are very quiet. Squeak-squeak is gone, and it’s very quiet now. Looking at the pads, especially one, it’s obvious were the wear indicator was touching the rotator and making the shit ton of noise. Stones also over the years, got caught in the rotator and pad and chewed some good holes, but I guess that’s pretty normal especially

Going take Big Red out and a about a few nights this week. ๐Ÿš—ย Just to be safe and make sure everything is working fine, but I expect no problems. I also need to pick up some groceries and get various supplies for heading down to West Virginia. More MicroSD cards for my dash camera would be nice, especially now they are pretty cheap, especially at certain retailers.

Today will be cloudy โ˜ and warm for October, with a high of 80 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 23rd. Enjoy the warmth today, by the weekend it will be a plunge towards the cold side of things. Maximum dew point of 67 at 3pm. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1927. There was a dusting of snow in 1946.โ„

The sun will set at 6:37 pm with dusk around 7:05 pm, which is one minute and 46 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 66 degrees at 6am. 21 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had light drizzle in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1972.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, sunny, with a high near 59. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 51 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 64 degrees. I think it may be rainy driving through Pennsylvania down to West Virginia on Sunday, and Monday be a washout in the Canaan Heights, but the rest of the week looks nice. I’m bringing the heater and will have my tent so if it gets really miserable out, I’ll curl up next to the heater in the tent with a book, and stay warm and dry.

Ordered new jeans ๐Ÿ‘– online and are quite happy with what I got.ย I used to buy jeans all the time at Walmart but they’d usually only have one pair in my size, so I’d end up making multiple trips. But as I usually end up buying a bunch of jeans at once — usually when I’m traveling for work — they all tend to wear out at once. It’s nice to have them be right at my door. They did come in a plastic shipping bag, but not much thicker then the usual ones you get a store. But I’m sure it will burn just fine. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I also bought a few prepper – don’t tread on mepro second amendment t-shirts ๐Ÿ‘š online. I just like being obnoxious on my days off from work, and I needed some more cheap shirts to wear out and about. ๐Ÿ They were cheap. I was surprised they were shipped from Ballston Spa, NY. I thought it would come from some place out west like Arizona. I might order some more some point in the future — if I had ordered $5 I could have gotten free shipping but I didn’t want to spend quite so much.

I am very glad it’s a three paycheck month.ย Between the truck expense — which was more reasonable then I expected, vacation, needing some more clothes, and other things, it’s going to be an expensive month. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Not that I expect vacation to be real expensive, but there is always fuel, some camping fees, food, and other supplies that get used up. Probably $500 at the end of day, but that’s not bad for a week in the wilds West Virginia — most of it will be gas.

Next month I’m leading the Save the Pine Bush hike along the Rapp Road. We are meeting by the West Doors of Macy’s and going to hike down Rapp Road to see the proposed Crossgates apartment complex site, along with some of the Rapp Road Historic Area and the Butterfly Corridor. ๐Ÿฆ‹ October 19th at 9 AM, meet by Macy’s West Entrance.ย  Yesterday, I noticed on my Facebook profile that I’ve been checked out by Robert Susse, district manager of Macy’s. I wonder who gave him the heads up? The print shop gave them my name? ๐Ÿ› I guess it doesn’t matter, were not there to protest, just some old folks and maybe some young folks meeting up at a convenient place. What are they going to do? Use facial recognition and tell us to leave? If we have to move our cars, so be it.๐Ÿ…ฟ

West Virginia trip is mostly planned out.๐Ÿžย I think the big last detail was where I was going to camp down at New River Gorge, but I think I know now which primitive campgrounds down will be best — and a bit more about the timing of each day. But I have maps and to a certain extent can make it up as go along. I have pretty much a route figured out, although things may change based on the weather.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be November ๐Ÿฅง when the sun will be setting at 5:48 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm.

Cedar River Flow and Moose Plains

September 19, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Ten weeks until Thanksgiving.๐Ÿฆƒย We are the same distance between now and Thanksgiving, and the First Day of Summer and Labor Day. Sunny and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. Foggy ๐ŸŒ in the city. As they say, winters coming. It’s only going to get colder. I caught the local to work ๐Ÿš as was running late as I got looking at a map, trying to plan out my vacation. ๐Ÿ‚

I might order a good West Virginia map like a Rand McNally as because the National Forest map I have is excellent but the same can’t be said about the AAA map which covers three states down that way. ๐Ÿ—บย I think I could make my route using that map but a better one on Amazon is like $5 and I might discover things that I would overlook. Regardless, I want this year’s trip to be better planned than last year.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1946.

The sun will set at 6:58 pm with dusk around 7:27 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 44 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Calm wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1979.

Awesome weekend on tap, with temperatures running 13 degrees above normal. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 85. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

This evening I’ll head to the store ๐Ÿฌ and get the supplies I need and Big Red gassedย up. โ›ฝ Right after the Pine Bush hike I want to head up to the Adirondacks for a final overnight trip at the potholers. After this, I probably won’t be back to Piseco-Powley Road until next June or July — we will see — but I think with the colder weather coming and the fact that area is prone to lake effect snow.๐ŸŒจ I’d wait until next weekend, but who knows what the weather will be like by next week.

I stillย think it’s pretty neat that OGS agreed to reprogram funds for the combined heat and power plant ๐Ÿ”ณย for solar both on the plaza and in Oneida County. While I’m not a fan of developing more solar farms, it’s good to see the state is putting their money where their mouth is. They have a lot of room for solar at the State Office Campus, if they built over the parking lots and the ring roads. Putting solar over the roads makes a lot of sense in the snow climate we live in — no snow to remove and rain is blocked from motorists windshields.๐Ÿ”

In two weeks, the sun will be setting at 6:34 pm with dusk at 7:02 pm. ๐ŸŒ† On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 65 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 83 back in 1967.

July 15, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear under the full moon ๐ŸŒ• and 71 degrees in Delmar. Calm wind. The dew point is 58 degrees. It is beautiful moonlit night before the heat and humidity really kicks in later in the week.

I got some nice fresh and cold milk from Stewart’s, ๐Ÿฎ and I appreciated the local cows with some fresh blueberries and cherries ๐Ÿ’. I liked the blueberries but I guess the cherries I bought where only modestly sweet. I thought about buying ice cream but this is a healthier option. It was a nice reward after a pleasant evening walk. ๐Ÿšถ

Been working on Save the Pine Bush stuff at the library, doing research and recreating tax maps for a project for Save the Pine Bush. Some of those metes and bounds for the Crossgates parcel are tough to reproduce. ๐ŸŒ The metes are hard to find the reference point of the imaginary lines, and the bounds often follow detailed building edges. And it’s a shit ton of parcels. But I’m making progress. ๐ŸŒฒI’ll be back at it Wednesday night, as tomorrow night I’m over at John Wolcott house for his history project and file sorting. ๐Ÿ“‚ I’m thinking if a print the tax maps (probably after breaking the county’s silly print disable – Linux don’t care ๐Ÿง), and download the underlying OrthoPhoto geotiff, then I can probably work on it one day at camp off line.

Tomorrow marks 50 years since the first departure from the earth to the moon. ๐Ÿš€ While only 24 human beings would ever walk on the moon, it was a remarkable accomplishment that was probably abandoned much too early in our history only three years later in December 1972. Some people are skeptical about the moon landings, it only happened six times by man before getting the congressional axe. โœ‚

I should see if PBS or one of the other YouTube channels will have a special I can watch about Apollo 11. ๐ŸŽ‘ It would be fun to watch on the laptop while I’m at camp during vacation. That said by the time on my trip it should be the last quarter moon ๐ŸŒ“ so it should be good for looking at the stars assuming that I have clear nights up at Foster Pond. ๐ŸŒŸ Maybe see some shooting stars.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 59 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10pm. Light southwest wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It was humid. It got down to 69 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1946.

Tonight will have a Full Buck Moon ๐ŸŒ• with 99% illuminated. The sun will rise at 5:31 am with the first light at 4:58 am, which is 51 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and one minute of darkness, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 7am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 86 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal. That’s like a hot summer day with humidity pushing in tomorrow. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 96 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1900.

So I have the camping permit ๐ŸŽซ for camping in Wellsboro Thursday through Saturday nights but I don’t have to camp all those nights. It’s just an option, although I’ll probably stay at least one night as I don’t want to drive all the way back from the Allegheny National Forest in one day and I’d like to hike at least part of the Pine Creek Gorge trail. ๐Ÿšถ I wish I had a working bicycle, that’s a good way to explore it.

I’m still on the fence about leaving Friday night versus Saturday morning. If I leave Friday night I will be out in the Finger Lakes by Saturday afternoon as I’ll stay at Brookfield on Friday night and drive the rest of the way on Saturday. ๐ŸŠ Probably take old Route Twenty out through Montezuma as mom wants me to get her wine ๐Ÿท and I like avoiding both Cortland and Ithaca going that way. If I leave Saturday, I’ll go to Glimmerglass State Park Beach on Otsego Lake, then Brookfield Saturday night, and get to the Finger Lakes National Forest later on Sunday night, when I think it’s most likely that I can get the Chicken Co-op Campsite that my GPS likes to call it. โ›บ Which ever day I arrive, probably before setting up camp I’ll visit Taughnahock State Park and check out the beach on Cayuga Lake. I checked, the Winery opens at nine AM both days including Sunday. I didn’t know wineries could sell before noon in New York but apparently they can. That said I doubt I’d be out to Montezuma before noon either day.๐Ÿฆ Probably won’t spend much time at Montezuma as it’s going to hot and sticky and there won’t be many birds out and about.

I kind of would prefer to visit the Watkins Glen Pool on the weekend ๐ŸŠ as it’s fully open then. Weekdays half of the pool is closed I believe although maybe not if it’s hot and sunny and there is enough people. But then again the swim lanes are fully open and the nice chairs are always available when the pool is open. The other thing is I only plan to spend half the week in the Finger Lakes, the balance of the week will be in Allegany or Cattaraugus County in Western New York and then down to Pennsylvania for a few days. ๐Ÿš™

In four weeks on August 12 the sun will be setting at 8:01 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 30 minutes and 5 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny and temperatures between 79 and 67 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 61 degrees. The record high of 99 degrees was set back in 1944.

Looking ahead, Work Like a Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 3 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 weeks, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 6 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 7 weeks and Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 12 weeks.

Crane Lake 85

April 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Next Friday is Grilled Cheese Day ๐Ÿง€. Mostly cloudy and 31 degrees at the Four Corners in Bethlehem, NY. โ›… Calm wind. I missed the express as I had an issue with my contacts ๐Ÿ‘€ so I ended up deciding to go for a walk down to the four corners. Rain later then the skies will clear tomorrow around 2 pm.

Today it seems like the rain held off so I was able to walk down๐Ÿšถto the four corners to get some exercise before taking the yokel local because I running a few minutes too late to catch the express bus ๐Ÿš. Probably is close to the same amount of time leaving from the four corners as catching the express but not as scenic. ๐Ÿš†The seat I’m in adjusted strangely not very comfortable. ๐Ÿ’บ Cloudy this morning โ˜ but the rain is going to hold off until later. โ˜” Cool but not so cold this morning, I ended up leaving the heat off last night as it will be in the upper forties by afternoon and mid sixties on Saturday. Things are still warmer with the heat off in my apartment compared to mid winter with the heat on.

I am glad it’s finally a Friday. ๐ŸŽ‰Seven weeks from now I’ll be getting ready to swat black flies during the long Memorial Day Weekend. No to Moose River Plains this year over Memorial Day Weekend but I’m inclined to visit the Southern Adirondacks, maybe along Route 8. Been a long week for sure ๐Ÿ˜• having to work last Sunday.

Today will rain likely before 4pm, then rain and snow likely between 4pm and 5pm, then rain, snow, and sleet after 5pm. ๐ŸŒฅ High of 40 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around March 6th. Light east wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow and sleet accumulation expected. A year ago, we had partly cloudy. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1928. 1.1 inches of snow fell back in 1914.โ„

The sun will set at 7:26 pm with dusk around 7:54 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and possible sleet ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 36 degrees. I probably made a good decision to wear my rain coat โ˜”. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain and sleet likely, becoming all rain after 10pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 36 degrees at 6pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 11th. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1943.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 60 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 18th. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1921. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1982.โ„It’s a reminder that we can still have snow this time of the year but it’s increasingly rare especially with the warming climate in the Albany area.

Saturday now looks like the nicest day of the weekend. I have my neice’s birthday ๐ŸŽ‚ party in the afternoon but in the morning I’m thinking about walking out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center, this time not deciding I accidentally leaving the oven on. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ It sucked having to run back so quickly the other day after the oven fiasco that turned out to be just some dried out brownies. ๐Ÿช

Looking ahead to Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 62. Calm wind. โ˜€ Maximum dew point of 42 at 4pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 54 degrees.

As I noted yesterday I’m thinking about hiking Platte Clove Road on Sunday. ๐ŸŒฒI think I’ve figured out a good legal place to park, although it will add maybe a mile more of a walk. I’ll bring my microspikes in case the road is still icy but I doubt it.๐Ÿธ The gates are still closed but I should be able to walk past them. I’ll think about it some more tomorrow. I think it would be a nice full day hike without much mud or muck. Get the blood pumping too. That said if the forecast continues to become cloudy, I might change my mind, maybe do some fishing instead ๐ŸŽฃ.Maybe next weekend? The gates open on Platte Clove Road to automobiles ๐Ÿš˜ on April 15th supposedly.

As previously noted, next Friday is Grilled Cheese Day ๐Ÿง€ when the sun will be setting at 7:34 pm with dusk at 8:03 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 54 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 84 back in 1977.

In four weeks on May 3 the sun will be setting at 7:58 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 31 minutes and 48 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny skies with generally warm weather, with a few rain showers and temperatures between 83 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 66 and 43 degrees. The record high of 89 degrees was set back in 2001.

I spent about an hour on the exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ and then a few hours playing around with mapping on my laptop. I’m trying to get better at simplifying shapefiles and extracting rasters. ๐ŸŒ GIS is a really complicated science, I keep learning more each day. I skipped my evening walk because I got working on playing with map data ๐Ÿ”ฃand honestly I thought it might be cold out.

I thought I had blocked Facebook Lite from running in the background of my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ but it’s popping up notifications again. I guess I am going to just have to completely uninstall it. I can use the browser for updating my Facebook page every once and a while. It’s just become such a headache in my life. They make that product so obnoxious.

I finally got tired of telemarketers and the certain groups calling me ๐Ÿ“ž asking for money and trying to sell shit I don’t want to buy. So I installed an app that I believe automatically sends any phone number that is not in my contacts list ๐Ÿ“ฑ right to voicemail – without that stupid missed call notification. โžฟ I regularly check my voice mail when it comes in and then decide to call back.

Most robo calls don’t leave voice mails in my experience.๐Ÿ”•Sometimes I’ll refuse the robo call but it’s still in log that I have to clear out which is a pain. Some robos are creepy, ๐Ÿ‘นand most are annoying just because when you get a call even if you dismiss it. I get people need to fundraise and if you don’t ask you won’t get. ๐Ÿ’ต I sometimes will send some group a few bucks but that doesn’t mean I will give again right away. Usually I give to local groups but occasionally I’ll give to a national group if I’m interested in a particular campaign they are advocating in. I don’t get into politics and rarely if ever contribute to political campaigns.

By conserving money of the past month I think finances have improved this April ๐Ÿ’ธ but I still have my my credit card bill ๐Ÿ’ณ to pay and state tax bill to pay mid month. With the quarterly payments next year hopefully my state taxes won’t be so bad next year. The feds over withhold enough I don’t have to worry there. Once I start traveling and camping more โ›บ expenses will increase but I expect to remain within my budget going forward. The solar helps save fuel at camp and I’m trying to walk and do more things closer to camp, especially now that I have the solar to top off things.

Looking ahead, Grilled Cheese Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 1 weeks, Cinco de Mayo ๐Ÿค  is a month away, Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 6 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ is in 7 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 2 months, Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 3 months and Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 21 weeks.

Still Some Snow

June 10, 2018 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy to and 65 degrees in Westerlo, NY. There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 47 degrees. Another weekend comes to a close. It was a nice weekend but it sure went by quickly. Camped up at Pumpkin Hollow Road west of Willis Lake, hiked back to Wilcox Lake and on Sunday fished at Woods Lake in Benson.

Tonight will be partly cloudy โ˜, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 47it\’s a safe option where I can play on my phone while I wait – at 7pm. North wind around 5 mph. In 2017, we had partly cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1980.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 10% illuminated. The moon will rise at 3:54 am. The New Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of showers. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Wednesday, June 27th. The sun will rise at 5:17 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 9 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 8 hours and 44 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 39 seconds over last night.

It wasn’t a half bad weekend camping at Pumpkin Hollow Road in the Adirondacks. 🎃 I haven’t camped up there in two years but it’s nice and quiet up there. Saw only one hiker while ca was quite surprised I didnโ€™t see anybody at Wilcox Lake today, mping up there and maybe a few cars passing by to the hunting camp up there.

On Saturday I hiked back to Wilcox Lake via the Willis-Wilcox Lake trail. The hike from Pumpkin Hollow Road was nice in the sense thatโ€™s its very quiet and the trail is relatively flat and not-muddy. 🏃But there isnโ€™t an awful lot to see besides a few glimpses of the marshy, flatwater stretch of Wilcox Outlet and the part where the bridge crosses Wilcox Outlet. Plus a handful of rather large old growth trees โ€” some pines and some ash trees. A few of them are quite massive and probably date back to before the Industrial Revolution, if not before the Civil War.

I checked out the other lean-to at Wilcox Lake that I hadnโ€™t seen before. Looks well used and abused, not a whole lot of wood left around there. That lean-to got a new roof put on it this past year. Unlike lean-tos in other parts of the state where they use wooden shingles, most of the Adirondack ones use asphalt, โ›บwhich I think is quite tacky, and shorter lasting, but I guess itโ€™s difficult to get heavy wooden shingles into the remote back country, and of course the hollier then holly Forest Preserve can never have a tree cut, even for enhancing recreational use.

I was quite surprised I didnโ€™t see anybody at Wilcox Lake when I was there, although I was less surprised about passing nobody on Willis-Wilcox Lake Trail. While the trail gets enough use that itโ€™s easy to follow, itโ€™s obvious itโ€™s not a popular hiking route. 🐻While Pumpkin Hollow Road is a still a designated snowmobile corridor, I donโ€™t know if the Willis-Wilcox Lake Trail is used anymore for snomwobiling โ€” Iโ€™d have to look at my map that I have on the blog. Pretty overgrown for that, although I donโ€™t think it ever was a high speed corridoor.

I did like being able to camp in the same location for two days, keeping my truck off but keeping the accessory battery charged via the solar panel. The solar panel worked fine in the partial sun and hazy skies, after a full day outdoors, although I doubt it ever got enough sun to go over-voltage, but the charge controller was in float mode by the time I got back to my truck. 🔋As I leave the dome light turned off while I camp, I usually leave the doors open all of the time when I am at camp, to keep the computer from booting up and putting wear on the starting battery, to ensure I donโ€™t have to start it up until I break camp โ€” although I keep a careful eye on it to make sure it remains above 12.6 volts while parked โ€” which so far it has. For safety I did start it briefly on Sunday morning as the resting voltage had dropped to 12.55 but I’m not sure it was necessary. 🚘It will start most likely at a much lower voltage, but I like to ensure the starting battery is as close as possible to 100% the whole time Iโ€™m at camp.

Both days I cooked up Eggs and Sausage over charcoal on the fire. 🍳 I forgot how good things taste when you cook over a fire. Nice smokey flavor. Hamburgers one night, Macoroni and Cheese the other night. Pretty good eating in the wilderness.

Both nights I was pretty tired, 💤and went to bed early after a short campfire. Been having more problems with migraines lately, and just a lot of exhaustion in the evening.

Sunday I hiked back to Woods Lake and fished there for a while. 🎣Kept catching pumpkin seed or whatever their called boney as shit pan fish and tossing them back in. Not surprising, it was a waste of time. But I hadn’t been back to that lake in a few years so I thought I might visit it but I really should have fished for trout in the Sacandaga River below the Lake Algonquin dam like I often do. 🐋 Totally my fault but I didn’t feel like back tracking to Wells.

Had Sunday dinner at my parents house, and now I’m sleeping out there in my truck.😴 A bit of a cool evening but it should make for good sleeping.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞 , with a high of 75 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 92 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1947.

Going to be a nice night tomorrow for the work picnic, which this year I’m going to take public transportation to get there rather than drive. 🚌 That way I can have a drink or two with dinner, as I no longer drive after having any alcohol as my vision is kind of poor, especially after dark.😎 I got to find a better I doctor when I get my eyes checked this summer. Plus I hate driving in the city, as I always worry that I will get in a wreck or a red light camera ticket.🚦 The bus may not be real fast but it’s a safe option where I can play on my phone while I wait – although I best make sure my phone is charged as the battery seems to be wearing out. 🔋

But other than that picnic, 🍔 I figure it will be a pretty ordinary week at work. Lots of memos to write, more mail to package and get out the door📩. I’m hoping that the week will go by quickly and will be followed by another fairly nice weekend. I will have to stare more at the countdown clock I built in the office.

In August my rent is going up $25 a month to $675 a month, another $300 yearly hit on my budget. 💸But then again it’s the first rent increase in five years and rent increases have been well below the rate of inflation over the past going on eleven years I’ve lived there. Landlord is a businessman, he has to make a little profit and inflation can’t eat it all away even if I do always pay my rent on time.

Sure I’d like to have the money to spend or invest but still I think my sometimes moldy, always grubby apartment is a good deal, especially being on the bus line and near the park and library where I can walk to and get on the internet for free. If I had to drive to work, pay for internet or any of the other costs of home ownership, 🏡especially in a high tax state like New York I’d probably come out behind compared to renting a cheap apartment plus investing and saving every month. Plus who would upkeep the building when I travel for work. Money is always tight for me but a lot is because I’m saving and investing a lot towards a better tomorrow.

Paying now for a big fancy house in the Albany area that I don’t really want, wouldn’t necessarily gain me much when you figure in all the interest and bank fees,🏪 especially because I don’t want to live in a suburb on New York State the whole rest of my life.

On this day in 1964, United States Senate breaks a 75-day filibuster against the Civil Rights Act of 1964, leading to the bill’s passage. That was a pretty big deal back then. 🏫

Next weekend looks like it might be perfect weather-wise. 😎 Next Saturday, sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Next Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Maximum dew point of 57 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees.

If that weather forecast remains true I will probably go to the Gas Up on Saturday and camp overnight in Schoharie County, do some fishingโ›บ and hike the cliffs of Middleburgh.🗻 That I think would be a nice weekend 🐠and will enable me to be places where I have my phone in case I have to do work related tasks.

In four weeks on July 8 the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm,🌄 which is 2 minutes and one second later then today. In 2017 on that day, we had thunderstorm, thunderstorm rain, rain, drizzle, patches of fog, mist, in the vicinity there was thunderstorm, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 80 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1936.

Looking ahead, Fathers Day 👨 is in 1 week, Daylight Savings Time Ends 🛥๏ธ is in 21 weeks, Veterans Day (Sunday) 🇺🇸 is in 22 weeks and First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 25 weeks.

October 15, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Average High is 60. Three weeks to Daylight Savings Time Ends. Cloudy with fog and 65 degrees in Williamsport. There is a east-southeast breeze at 8 mph. The dew point is 57 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Today will be cloudy, with a high of 74 degrees at 4pm. 15 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. Southeast wind 8 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1897. There was a dusting of snow in 1939.

The sun will set at 6:26 pm with dusk around 6:53 pm, which is one minute and 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy conditions and 71 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 20mph. Today will have 11 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before 11pm. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low of 52 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal. Southwest wind around 10 mph becoming west after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2016, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1978.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends when the sun will be setting at 4:57 pm with dusk at 5:26 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2016, we had mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 57 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1994.

Day one of the Great Autumn Trip wasn’t particularly sunny but it was mild and in many parts the colors were pretty good. I know today we are supposed to get showers by evening, but I’m hoping that the skies will be clear for the bulk of the day. We did have a few sprinkles in the evening when I was camping at County Bridge but it wasn’t a big deal.

I didn’t get a real early start on my trip because I wanted to make sure everything was packed that I needed. I think I succeeded at that goal, as I used a check list and I left my apartment pretty darn clear.

US Route 6 hasn’t changed much. I have driven that route too many times, but it’s still a hell of a lot more scenic and interesting to drive then the Southern Tier Expressway. It’s interesting to see the industrial small towns, the paper mills, slaughterhouses, and all the industry that supports the natural gas industry. Unlike New York, rural Pennsylvania has a lot more heavy industry it seems. I think they have different tax laws and are generally friendlier to smoke stack industries. Whether or not that is a good thing is a debate point, but once can saw at least the land is being put to work. I like the gritty nature of Pennsylvania backcountry. Just like I like West Virginia and Virigina. I kind of like the landscape, it reminds me of what America had to have been like during the 1950s. Backwards maybe, but charming at the same time.

I often find myself needing to take a piss while driving. I stopped twice at rest areas and then ended up stopping at the McDonald’s and getting a milk shake so I could use their bathroom and take a piss. I think the milkshake was like $3.50 — for that price, I think I would have been better off to go to ice cream parlor or if I was in New York State, Stewarts.

I was going to stop at Stewarts and buy some firewood but I passed the last Stewarts on my way down to Pennsylvania. So I ended up skipping that and was able to find some firewood around the campground, but the wood I found was pretty damp and punky, but after a good smoke show, some paper and plastic from he campground trash cans, I had a decent fire going by around 7:30 PM. Once the whole mess got started it, wasn’t that bad. I didn’t need the fire for the warmth — it was well in the mid-60s until after in later in the evening, when I put my beloved orange hoodie. I expect I will be wearing that for most of the rest of the week, especially after the front comes through.

First time camping at County Bridge Campground, which is four miles from Morris Run, which like many Northern Pennsylvania villages is little more then a grouping of old houses and hunting camps from some historical era. Blossburg is the next village of any size, but it’s just an exit on US 15 aka future Interstate 99. It’s a fifteen campsite campground, well spread out. There was somebody camping on the other side of the campground in an RV, but they were a good ways away. It was pretty under the maple trees when the sun was open. Lots of nice color. The Morris Run made a nice background for sleeping at night even if it made me kept thinking about taking a piss.

So far the trip has been going well bar the firewood issue I’m ready for the rain showers, especially if I camp at Ohiopyle State Park, where they have hot showers. I was surprised that the none of the Park Service Campgrounds on the Blue Ridge Parkway have showers, even though they charge $20 a night. Well then I probably just overnight at North Creek Campground which is half the price, usually empty on weekdays and doesn’t have showers. Maybe on my trip back home, I should find out if there is a “Modern” campground in Pennsylvania that I can stay at for $20 that includes showers. Maybe I could come farther east and camp on the way back. I’ll figure out at the week progresses. Heck, it tempts me to do Shenandoah National Park, as they have coin showers at one of the campground. But I don’t know I’ve done that before, and I’m not that interested in revisiting much of my 2015 trip. I want to see new things on this trip, and the problem with Skyline Drive is it kind of locks you away from seeing things down in the valley. But on the other hand, it had so many nice views and the road was well maintained.

Discovered last night that I left my card reader home with the second microSD card. Not a big deal but I want to get another microSD card so I can save my trip and pull stuff off it each night. Sometimes the adapter that comes with the SD card can ean be tempermental, but hopefully it will work or I will have to buy another SD card reader. Not expensive but I am annoyed because I thought about this before leaving but did not act. Walmart should save my ass though with this. I plan to stop this morning.

Today I plan to drive down through Mid-State Pennsylvania along I-99 and US 15/US 220 to Ohiopyle State Park, stopping at the Flight 92 Memorial, which is located off the old Lincoln Highway. Ohiopyle looks quite scenic, at least for the overlook. I know we are getting some rain this evening, but I’m hoping it won’t be too bad.

The Appalachian Throughway is absolutely beautiful between Blossburg. I will be posting more photos and videos later on from that part of the trip.
