Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 22 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. The breeze definitely makes things feel cooler than reality. Still a nice spring day. ๐ŸŒธ While still a month away, looking forward to seeing the daisies ๐ŸŒผ come out. Birds are definitely chirping today. ๐Ÿฆ The grass blowing in the wind ๐ŸŒพ at the farm down the way is pretty with the deep blue skies.

I’ve been getting to bed early ๐Ÿ› and an earlier start, as it won’t be long before I am going downtown more regularly ๐Ÿข. I also am not sure when the landlord is coming over to make repairs so I wanted to take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and be ready to go downtown for work if he starts making a lot of noise. ๐Ÿšฝ I’ve worked from home when he’s been over making repairs but it’s a terrible distraction. ๐Ÿ”Š Even if he doesn’t come over today and I end up just feeling clean that’s fine. ๐Ÿ›€ Keeping things good and clean is good.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 5pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Northwest wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. That breeze despite the sun will keep things feeling cool. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 64° from the due south horizon (-6.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:22 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:02 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 8:32 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:12 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 22 seconds over yesterday.

Still trying to figure out what they smell is downstairs. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป Airing things out helped. Maybe a dead mouse ๐Ÿญ although I’m leaning towards mold under the carpet when I was scrubbing it earlier in the week. I guess it’s an excuse to do more cleaning. I plugged in an air freshener downstairs and I’m continuing to search around. Windows are all open which I think is helping. I may make a trip to the store later to get more air fresheners and cleaning supplies. ๐Ÿšฝ Maybe some is the noxious ammonia cleaner I’ve been using later, or that bathroom mat that looks like it has some urine on it. Not sure, I got to get better at aiming for the toilet when I pee. Yet, another benefit to being out in the woods.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 18th. Going to be a chilly night to keep the windows open ๐Ÿ”ณ. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1874.

Weekend looks increasingly cloudy and stormy and cold. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Maximum dew point of 38 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees. I will probably just walk out to Five Rivers on Saturday and then do some kind of hike Sunday.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

April 13, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ•  to celebrate the Pinkster. ๐ŸŒบ Not sure if related, but I saw some of dogwoods are out in bloom and they smell nice this time of year. Partly cloudy and 46 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. Still a bit gray out this morning, but it appears it will be quite nice by mid-day, with weather more like late April then mid-April. But warm enough for a pleasant morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I’ll take a shower when I have some downtime at work, and get ready for heading downtown on the bus ๐ŸšŒ at 11:30 for my COVID-shot.  ๐Ÿšฟ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 4pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Another real nice spring day, already have my windows open. ๐ŸŒบ Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became heavy rain by afternoon. The high last year was 64 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 1977. 5.5 inches of snow fell back in 1950.โ„

Busy day ahead with work than downtown at my lunch break on the bus ๐Ÿš for round two of my COVID-19 Shot. ๐Ÿ’‰ Then come home for a bit and then drive over to the therapist. ๐Ÿ’ญ I’m really looking forward to learning more about my thought process and discussing my feelings and sometimes conservative views, my love of all things fire be in the Pine Bush or burn barrels ๐Ÿ”ฅ and off-grid living. ๐Ÿก So many things to chew over these days. ๐Ÿฎ It’s really hard to find a neutral party to talk to, especially when most of my close friends and colleagues are generally quite liberal. ๐Ÿ™ And it’s only a $25 first incidence appropriation for the copay. ๐Ÿ’ต If I decide it’s worthwhile I’ll budget some more. I hope I become a better person, so I can be better at making more money. Then back home, do a little more work ๐Ÿ’ป and maybe then go down to the park with book. ๐Ÿ“–

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.6° from the due south horizon (-14.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:58 pm with the sun in the west (277°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west-northwest (283°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:35 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:04 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west (278°) at an altitude of 13° from the horizon, 252,236 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:40 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 61 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Definitely a good night for reading down at the park ๐Ÿž although I have to watch out for ticks. Maybe no sitting in the grass. ๐ŸŒพ Today will have 13 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 8th. Calm wind. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 19 occurred back in 1973.

After rain and snow up north on Thursday and Friday, looking at a pretty good weekend. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 57. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Maximum dew point of 38 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees.

Maybe more clouds up north, but I think it will be a good weekend to get out of town, especially if I camp on a hard, well drained area and avoid trails that are particularly wet, maybe preferring road hikes. ๐Ÿ• The fire danger should be much reduced after Thursday and Friday, ๐Ÿ”ฅ which is good because I’ll want a small fire to stay warm with all that cold and damp. Rivers will be ragging for fishing, but I might choose to fish the Sacanadaga in Wells before the open the hydro-dam for the morning power ramp,โšก ๐Ÿ’ฆ or Chittenango Creek not too far downstream where water levels might be high if I go out west. ๐ŸŽฃ Still need to renew my fishing license, hoping I can do that at Wally World or I might hit up a hick-town town hall to get it. ๐ŸŽซ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. We were discussing the Pinksterfest Albany used to have ๐ŸŒบ before it got cut due to budgetary concerns in favor of a bigger Tulipfest. ๐ŸŒทOn that day in 2020, we had rain showers, cold, cloudy and temperatures between 46 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Tom Ball Mountain

April 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Three weeks to Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Albany got rid of their Pinkster festival ๐ŸŒบ some years back to focus on a bigger tulip festival. ๐ŸŒท Sunny and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Up early this morning, ๐ŸŒ… as I have to drop my truck off for the oil change this morning. ๐Ÿ›ข I could do it myself, but it’s so much easier to have it dropped off at my mechanic ๐Ÿ”ง and let him deal with getting the rusty salt-encrusted filter off and draining and changing the oil. Small engines aren’t so bad, but it can be a bitch to get that filter off sometime, and I can never find 5W-30 synthetic at the store. Then I should be good until November or 7,000 miles when my inspection is due — although I might do another oil change before I go to West Virignia in the fall, especially if it’s in the shop for other repairs at the same time. Not like the bad ol’ days when you did oil changes every 3,000 miles. I’ll drop it off, walk home, and pick it up at lunch time. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ That way I get my morning walk in to on this most beautiful of spring days.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 28th. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph. ๐Ÿšฉ Another red flag day with the wind, the warmth and the dry grass. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 62 degrees. The record high of 82 was set in 1921. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1982.โ„

At lunch time, I will probably head down to the store ๐Ÿฌ and pick up some groceries. I need more frozen fruit ๐Ÿ“ as I am pretty addicted to that and the Maine frozen Wild Blueberries that they have at Hannaford are like crack, and maybe some eggs and other things. I probably should get the groceries I need for the week, as I don’t have any other reason to drive anywhere this week, although maybe I will go somewhere on Saturday for a hike. I’m thinking Rennselear County but I could decide to just walk somewhere on Saturday and then Sunday maybe do Partridge Run or Rennselearville State Forest. Depends on the forecast.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:58 pm with sun having an altitude of 54° from the due south horizon (-16.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:50 pm with the sun in the west (274°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west (280°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:27 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 56 seconds with dusk around 7:55 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:30 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 59 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 59 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 50 seconds over yesterday. it sounds like a pleasant evening, I might go down to park. ๐Ÿž I should get more books at the library. I’ll have to look and reserve some, especially as when I head up to wilderness I like to have books to read.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 16th. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Almost warm enough to leave the windows open, for good sleeping. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 13 occurred back in 1982.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 63. Maximum dew point of 46 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 56 degrees. No camping plans for this weekend, ๐Ÿ• as the weather doesn’t look great, and I’m worried about it being so dry with a rip-roaring fire in the woods. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The snow is gone even up in the Adirondacks. I am hoping this weekend into next week we will get some rain, ๐ŸŒง and then I can head up north for an extended weekend come Thursday of next week. By then the state budget should be done and things will be quiet.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain showers, cold, cloudy and temperatures between 46 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

Houses and Farms

January 25, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ ! Next Monday is February ๐ŸŒง . Mostly sunny and 17 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธ

Last night my apartment flooded again. Yet, another water heater melted down, starting to leak water out of the top again. Called the landlord, and he says he’s going to have the plumber install another heater tomorrow. ๐Ÿ’ฆ This time for some reason the catch pan didn’t empty out the leak and it poured all over the floor of the closet, into my bedroom and through the living room ceiling downstairs, but so be it. Third water-heater this unit has gone through since I moved in December 2007. ๐Ÿ™„Kind of annoying, but it’s more my landlords problem then mine, bar the extra cleaning and mopping up of the wet dirty stuff from the melt down. It’s annoying that it’s one issue after another with the plumbing here, but at least he’s good at getting things fixed. ๐Ÿšฝ I wish he would just buy a good quality heater, so I wouldn’t be dealing with this issue every five years, especially when things flood. Last time they didn’t but I’m guessing the drain pan hose iced up in the cold.

To be fair, my apartment is quite affordable ๐Ÿ˜ as it’s been the same place I’ve been sent back in the day when I was making $27.5k at my first job out of college. Today, I make quite a bit more and my rent has not increased much over the years. Of course the fact that the landlord keeps having to replace the waterheater suggests at some point rent will be going up again. I like my apartment and it’s location, but I guess you get what you pay for these days. And it’s good that it gave me a long needed cleaning and straightening up my bedroom.๐Ÿ› Too often things just kind of got piled up around, things that I thought I might use some time in the future but probably should have long ago been chucked in the recycling bin or trash like old magazines. Dust doesn’t get cleaned off, books fall out of book shelves, you name it, it happens. ๐Ÿ“šThat’s kind of why I eventually want to own a tiny home, so if it’s not immediately being used and is kind of marginal in usefulness, it goes out to out the burn barrel for a very fiery form of disposal. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

I was also having blog problems, โœ due to a software update under Linux which seems to have broken the SSH connections everywhere on the system. I am looking into it further on my end but it only really effects a few things I use regularly, including syncing the website to local database. ๐Ÿ”„ The techs got part of it working again, but I’m still trying to figure out what I broke on my end. Not sure at all – I think either a certificate layer or broken protocol software. ๐Ÿ”ข When I get to the library later in the week, I’ll run apt and update the software, and hopefully that will fix things. I only don’t have synced things from the past few days.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 29 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal. Northwest wind 3 to 6 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became rain by afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1938. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 2000.โ„

It’s going to be a cold day today, but sunny. ๐ŸŒž While I did my evening walk, I skipped the morning walk as I was still cleaning up from yesterday’s mess. I really should done more to clean up earlier on – like get the old ripped clothing to the recycling center โ™ป and put all my summer clothing away so I could put my winter clothing in the dresser, but it’s now done. I also cleaned up and organized the crawl space, because I wanted to make sure none of my other clothing or camping gear would be sitting in a puddle of water for the rest of the winter. ๐Ÿ‘• It’s good though come the spring, it will be easier to get out the things I need.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:08 pm with sun having an altitude of 28.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-42.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:18 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (238ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (245ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:00 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 13 seconds with dusk around 5:30 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east (88ยฐ) at an altitude of 37ยฐ from the horizon, 246,581 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:05 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 28 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 44 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 7 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 17 degrees at 3am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 11th. Calm wind. In 2020, we had light rain in the evening, which became light drizzle by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 34 degrees. The record low of -17 occurred back in 1920.

Sunny but cold Saturday, snow possible for Sunday. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 22. ๐ŸŒž Sunday, a chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 29. โ›…Chance of precipitation is 30%. โ„ Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 54 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ I can’t wait until it’s warm enough to have the windows open and some fresh air. While that doesn’t happen all of the time in March, sometimes it can get fairly warm and nice. I am really looking forward to spending more nights in the woods. I can do winter camping, but I like it when the time changes and the weather is much nicer in the spring.

As previously noted, next Monday is February ๐ŸŒง when the sun will be setting at 5:09 pm with dusk at 5:38 pm. I am glad, this month seems like it has dragged on forever, and it’s been so controversial with so many angry people everywhere. Hopefully with a professional in the White House, the vaccine will roll out much more smoothly, and we can get back to normal life. ๐Ÿ˜ƒOn that day in 2020, we had snow showers, cloudy, mild and temperatures between 40 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1989.

Rural Poverty

January 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? First day of legislative session, of course.๐Ÿ› Garth’s Good Ride Cowboy ๐Ÿค  on the radio. Six weeks to 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Snow flurries clouds and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a north-northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

So yes, happy middle of the week. ๐Ÿช It will be the first week of January, and hopefully you week is having a fast and furious letdown like camels do. ๐Ÿฅ› Do watch those videos on Homesteady about camel dairying. Cloudy today. โ˜ Looking forward though to more sun tomorrow. ๐ŸŒž Not real cold for the balance of the week into the week, so no complaints, but I see the writing on the wall. At some point, I will have to turn up the heat when the temperatures plunge.

Today will be scattered flurries before 8am. Mostly cloudy , with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 15th. Northwest wind 8 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mostly clear by afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 2007. 12.7 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

I didn’t get to the store ๐Ÿฌ yesterday and I doubt I’ll be able to do so today. I’m just too busy with work and everything else. I still haven’t dug out my truck although I don’t think that will be a big deal. I think I will be too busy today ๐Ÿ’ผ with work but I do need to get to the bank ๐Ÿฆ soon as I have a big check I’ve been holding for the new year for tax purposes but it needs to be deposited soon. Plus I’m low on food ๐Ÿฒ although I think I can stretch groceries for one more day. I think maybe tomorrow – the weather will be much nicer and then I can also go to the library.๐Ÿ˜Ž I also want to wash my truck. ๐Ÿ˜‹ Salt eats cars. ๐Ÿ›ป I was at least happy that they credited my latest paycheck under the PEP vacation time for healthcare — my budget is always so tight ๐Ÿ’ธ and that extra $45 every two weeks ensures I can afford to eat and fuel my truck, which is kind of important. ๐ŸŽ It’s amazing how fast that money disappears into various retirement and investment accounts.

I went for my evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป last night and it was pleasant. I saw snow on the radar but none fell from the sky. Cool but not unreasonably cold for Januaryโ„ But I’m sure in a few weeks the pattern will change and we will have a frigid February and March. I guess with remote work if it’s really cold I won’t have to go outside much less wait outside at the frigid bus stop. ๐Ÿš You don’t know how cold it can be downtown with the wind whipping around all of the office buildings. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ‘ช๐Ÿšƒ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฌ This morning is gray but I’m out for my walk. ๐ŸŒฐ I need to restore some of my sanity before the craziness. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿšถ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-45.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:53 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:09 pm, which is one minute later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 33 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 12 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 7 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 24 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 11th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 3am; Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1878.

Saw the first mouse ๐Ÿญof the year in my apartment. I am surprised that I haven’t seen many mice for many years and the mice were so bad this summer up in the woods. Well I’ll put together a bucket trap if they become a problem. And make sure to lock up food ๐Ÿ”’ and clean up the crumbs a bit more.

While I expect a busy day today, ๐Ÿ’ผ I will occasionally follow the news ๐Ÿ“ฐ on the happenings in that other circus ๐Ÿคน๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ known as Washington DC. I can’t believe so many people are denying reality after the incompetent incumbent got voted out of office. โŽ Comptence matters especially during a pandemic. ๐Ÿ‘พIt’s important to stand up for your rights and protests are important part of a healthy democracy but you can’t deny objective reality.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 33. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

I don’t want to go too far from home this weekend, ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ”™๐Ÿ‚ but I should definitely plan on getting out both days this week. I do like Schodack Island. Or maybe I should explore Papscanee Island. I haven’t been there since July and I could then go grocery shopping at Aldi’s. ๐Ÿ› Or maybe I’ll end up somewhere in Western Rensselear County. Then maybe Sunday I’ll hike around the Copeland Hill Preserve.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 73 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ That means that Saturday works out to be 70 days or 10 weeks until calendar spring. Whatever that means. Gawd rarely follows the calendar, especially in New York.๐ŸŒจ All the cow people down south will be putting their cows out to pasture in March and I’ll be jealous as shit. ๐Ÿฎ

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:16 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy skies with rain showers and relatively mild temperatures for January, between 40 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 71 back in 1932.

Been thinking a lot about what is next. โ›ต I know that for now the best thing is to stay the course but I tell you all those off grid, rural and farm groups I’m part of on Facebook has me dreaming about a better tomorrow. ๐Ÿšœ I guess it’s one step at a time but I do look and see time starting to fly by so quickly. โณGoals at least targets ๐ŸŽฏ slowly but certainly are being made ๐Ÿฅ… but there is so much to do. I’m getting older and sometimes I look back at the silliness of my youth but I’m still learning.

Former Army Depot

January 5, 2021 7 AM Update

Good morning! Happy National Bird Day ๐Ÿง ! Bird’s the word. I know with this pandemic, ๐Ÿ‘พ I have been doing a lot more bird watching from my truck working off the Wi-Fi ๐Ÿ“ถ at the library parking lot. Those binoculars really bring in the birds up close, and when your looking out a windshield for 8 hours a day, you see a lot of nature. ๐Ÿฟ Next Tuesday is Coldest Day Recorded in Albany ๐Ÿ’จ . I don’t think this year next week will be nearly as cold. Cloudy and 31 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Melty melt. Kind of like that discarded empty coffee container from the other day. โ˜•๐Ÿ”ฅ Redneck recycling, it’s all BTUs in outdoor woodboiler. โ™ป Never mind, rednecks don’t tell. ๐Ÿ˜ถ LOL.

Heading out for my morning walk shortly.๐Ÿšถ I was so bad and didn’t get for my evening walk. I was going to go, but then I got playing with Leaflet Javascript mapping script. I figured out how to get the traditional topographic maps and the digital orthophoto quadrangles from the mid-1990s loaded into the system, so I can easily create interactive comparisons for the blog. ๐Ÿ—บ I was excited as a pig in shit about that, because I like neat, easy to create content that informs people about how our world is changing.๐ŸŒŽ Remote sensing, computers and GIS makes it easier to monitor the shit storm we know is happening on the earth. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ This morning is cloudy and shit but I better walk or I’ll get even fatter and die of a stroke.

Listening to Bob Dylan’s Lay, Lady Lay. ๐ŸŽธ I fixed it so it now plays on my smartphone, because it wasn’t in MP3 format. Good song, and I love the Erick Landy photo of Bob Dylan on the cover Nashville Skyline, which makes Mr. Dylan look like the country boy he really is or at least pretends to be in the year of 1967 when country-folk music was very popular. Kind of melty theme. ๐Ÿฆ That and the Byrd’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo. I just like it when fairly hip rock-and-rollers play country music with a bit of an ironic twist. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŒพ

Today will be cloudy โ˜, with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 15th. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 37 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1950. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

I am planning on going to the store mid-day today, ๐Ÿ› and then maybe wash my truck. ๐Ÿšฟ Then down to the library for the afternoon work session and to get more podcasts until I feel super cold and I have to come home and sit next to the electric heater. I want to install that ERIC IDE to see if that will help me with my Python coding, which I promise myself I am going to get even better at and use more python to write system scripts and the alike, rather then PHP which really isn’t well suited for that job but I often use for that purpose.๐Ÿ’ป

I finally got my replacement driver’s license in the mail โœ‰. I will need to get an eye test ๐Ÿ‘€ before the end of the year but I should probably visit the eye doctor this summer as it’s been a few years since I last got my eyes checked. While my insurance covers yearly contact exams now, I hate dealing with eye doctors, they’re the worst.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:52 pm with the sun in the southwest (232ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:37 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:08 pm, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:44 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies โ˜ and temperatures around 34 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 2 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 14th. North wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1996.

Did you see that they added the fondue emoji ๐Ÿซ• in 2020? Maybe not so cool to be sharing a pot of food in the year of the pandemic, ๐Ÿ‘พ but who doesn’t like fondue, with good melted cheese ๐Ÿง€ and cheap wine ๐Ÿพ and flour. I think we have a melting theme going on this morning. It’s because it’s fairly warm this morning, and in the distance I can just see spring. ๐Ÿท I know spring is a time of hick towns that smell like cow poop and mud ๐Ÿ’ฉ but also it means longer days, trout season ๐ŸŽฃ and less snow to deal with. And eventually things start to dry out and the swarms of black flies return to terrorize the woods. ๐Ÿœ Trust me, I know how the cycle works in Upstate NY. Three days of nice weather, 8 months of frigid cold, then cow shit, mud and black flies. ๐Ÿ„ But no cows, no cheese for fondue. And that would be sad.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 32. Typical average high for the weekend is 30 degrees.

If it wasn’t a two day weekend, ๐Ÿ˜ซ I would definitely head up to the Adirondacks. Plus I was just up there last weekend. But maybe we will have another weekend in January that isn’t super

As previously noted, two Tuesdays until the Coldest Day Recorded in Albany ๐Ÿ’จ when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:15 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly cloudy, warm weather rain showers and temperatures between 67 and 31 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 63 back in 2018. But back in 1972, it was a block-freezing negative 28 in the city of Albany. But it never gets that cold anymore, or so I’ll claim.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 74 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

August 13, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Clear and 72 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees.

It was a nice day ๐Ÿ‘ to explore part of the Finger Lakes I had never been to before. The Kueka Outlet Trail is pretty darn neat winding through a gorge past numerous ruins of old mills. ๐Ÿค One thing that surprised me that there was enough water power to run all those mills – when I was there the water was flowing but hardly a torrent. It might be different in the spring or after a heavy rain storm โ˜” – it’s been a pretty dry summer in the Finger Lakes although nothing like 2015.

Hiked ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ from Penn Yan to Dresden a total of 13 miles round trip. While this is not a strenuous hike by any means – it’s a 200 feet ascent heading west over 6 1/2 miles it was still an all afternoon hike and I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด with the heat. I did do a short walk around downtown Penn Yan ๐Ÿ™ which still has a fairly intact main street then visited the village park overlooking the lake. Ironically, when you are at one of the tips or Keuka Lake you really don’t get that scenic of a vista as all you see is the tine of the fork ๐Ÿดand big hill in the center.

Came back and got ice at Dandy Mart. Forgot to buy coffee โ˜• again for the morning. Spent a little time down at Clute Park but I was tired ๐Ÿ’ค and didn’t want to drive to camp in the dark so I left before sunset ๐ŸŒ‡. Came back and had hot dogs and beer ๐ŸŒญ๐Ÿบ, I’m definitely ready for bed now.

I thought about hiking to Foster Pond but after a few beers ๐Ÿป and all the walking ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ I did today, I decided it’s not advisable. I’m just super tired. I find it hard to get as good of night sleep in the woods as I do at home, especially if I stay up late and then wake up when the sun โ˜€ is pouring in my window. โฌœ

I have a bunch of pictures to upload ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ but I’ll wait until tomorrow when I head into town. I wanted to process them a bit more on my phone before uploading. I also have some pictures I want to get off my dash cam to upload.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 64 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 60 at 1am. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1941.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 28% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:43 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:14 am in the east-northeast (69ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 4 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:53 am with sun in the east-northeast (76ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 3 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 87 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 84 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1988.

Going to be another hot and sunny day tomorrow. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I think it would be a good day to spend one more day at the Watkins Glen State Park pool on a relatively quiet weekday. and maybe hike more of the Catharine Valley Rail Trail, maybe south of Montour Falls this time. ๐Ÿš‚ And maybe one last ice cream cone at Glen Dairy Bar. ๐ŸฆSaturday I will probably stay in the National Forest for social distancing purposes but I’m thinking of doing some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ and swimming of Caywood Point and maybe if it seems like the water is calm, paddling from Watkins Glen to Hector Point. Sunday I probably will hang out at camp for a while then maybe go for a hike around the rim of Taughannock and then head home around 1 pm, probably via NY 23.๐Ÿ›ฃ๏ธ

It seems odd that this trip I haven’t visited the Taughannock Gorge so far ๐Ÿ•‹ or Enfield Glen. While I like those places a lot they tend to be crowded and I have little interest in visiting any crowded places during the pandemic. I am trying to keep this trip simple and relaxing plus visiting new places in the Finger Lakes that I’ve not spent a lot of time in the past. Gorges are great but I am really truly hard to maintain social distancing. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆWhile COVID-19 doesn’t have me hiding all the time in my home, I really try to avoid places where maintaining social distancing is impossible.๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Before hiking today I sprayed heavily my hammock with another coat of Martin’s Permethrin. ๐Ÿœ Bugs haven’t been bad camping but I figured it’s a nice low humidity, non windy day so it should soak in good as some time in the future might be buggy again. Permethrin has a bit of a funny smell at first but it dissappears after airing out. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ

In four weeks on September 10 the sun will be setting in the west (277ยฐ) at 7:25 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 37 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 54 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1931.

Looking ahead, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 4 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 5 weeks, October ๐Ÿ›ฅ and Harvest Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 7 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 9 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ is in 3 months, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 15 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 17 weeks, Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 19 weeks, New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ† is in 20 weeks, Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก is in 5 months, Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ is in 22 weeks, Wolf Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 24 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day ๐Ÿฅ› is in 26 weeks and National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is in 27 weeks.
