January 18, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 39 degrees for the evening walk here in Delmar. โ˜ Breezy, ๏ธ16 mph breeze from the northwest ๐ŸŒฌ with gusts up to 26 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. That wind is a bit cold now that I’m out in the open but earlier didn’t feel real cold. Temperatures will drop below freezing around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ With the shit ton of salt on the sidewalks things should be good. If they only had been out earlier I could have done my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ and actually gotten my steps in.

What can I say, the first half of the week is done. ๐Ÿซ It’s nice when it’s a Monday and your out in Madison County. Why can’t all of life be like last weekend? โ›บ Its been a pretty busy week at work ๐Ÿข but I’ve been keeping things moving along. Closed out a bunch of projects ๐Ÿ“„ and I only screwed one up today. Soon it will be time for bed ๐Ÿ›.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ , with a low of 29 degrees at 5am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Northwest wind 6 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 26 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -28 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 10% illuminated. The Snow โ„ Moon is on Friday, February 3. The darkest hour is at 12:06 am, followed by dawn at 6:51 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:22 am in the east-southeast (118ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 16 seconds. Sunrise is 34 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:06 am with sun in the southeast (125ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 48 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will snow, possibly mixed with rain before 5pm, then rain, snow, and sleet. ๐ŸŒฅ High of 34 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 4th. North wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1929. 8.5 inches of snow fell back in 1886.โ„

With weather like that expected I’m kind of glad I live in the city. ๐ŸŒƒ Not that we ever get much snow in the city but the buses run regardless of the weather. ๐Ÿš I have to admit I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to winter driving at this point after all these years in the city. I mean I have a big jacked up truck ๐Ÿ›ป but I try to avoid driving it as much as possible in the winter months. That said, it’s mostly just rains in the city, especially as it has warmed so much in the past decade.

In four weeks on February 15 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (254ยฐ) at 5:28 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had snow showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 23 and 17 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 36 and 18 degrees. The record high of 55 degrees was set back in 2006.

Looking ahead, 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is Next Wednesday, 6 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is a month away, National Drink Wine Day ๐Ÿท is a month away, March ๐ŸŒจ is in 6 weeks, Ides of March โœ is in 8 weeks, Average High is 70 ๐Ÿฎ is in 16 weeks, Pack Rat Day ๐Ÿ€ is in 17 weeks, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 22 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 24 weeks, Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 24 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 32 weeks, 7 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 8 months, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 36 weeks, Last Sunset After 6:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 37 weeks, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 41 weeks, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 41 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 42 weeks, Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ is in 10 months, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 46 weeks and Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช is in 11 months.

Hillside

January 18, 2023 Morning

Good morning! An icy start to this Wednesday. โ„ Slip sliding our way into the mid week. How icy are the sidewalks? Well maybe not the dire emergency that the news ๐Ÿ“ฐ media is proclaiming but they were bad enough that after slipping and falling on the driveway and then trying again with the microspikes which suck on asphalt and concrete I just gave up on the walk and went back inside. Put on my suit and tie ๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ผ showered ๐Ÿšฟ and walked very carefully down to the bus stop ๐Ÿšthough not exactly in that order.

Cloudy, icy and 34 degrees in Bethlehem, NY. โ˜” There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 9am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 43 degrees at 12pm. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 9th. Southwest wind 6 to 14 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. That should help with the ice. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1973. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:07 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:51 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 5:21 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:56 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 30 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. The record low of -28 occurred back in 1971.

The weekend forecast is everything you can expect of recent January’s. ๐ŸŒฅ I’m giving the month ownership of the weather not the warming climate. Saturday, cloudy, with a high near 35. Sunday, a chance of rain after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 39. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 32 degrees.

Some good news is that l, next Wednesday is the 5 PM Sunset ๐Ÿ€ผ/strong>๓‘ฐ when the sun will be setting at 5:00 pm with dusk at 5:29 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1938.

Snow Squall Heads In

May 18, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Back hike again, getting ready to work in the office tomorrow ๐Ÿข after one more day of work from home. Two weeks to 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† . Partly cloudy and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 47 degrees.

Back home from the Adirondacks as of last night. ๐Ÿก I probably could have stayed another day but Wednesday is a session day and I have to dress up and didn’t want to come home late and then have to get up early and get all dressed for work the next day. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿซ Tomorrow morning at this time I’ll be getting ready to go and get on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Need to figure out which bus makes the most sense to catch downtown – they still have the pandemic schedule. ๐Ÿ˜ท Still have to wear a mask on the bus ๐Ÿš and elevators at work but at the desk it’s not necessary especially now that most folks are vaccinated.

Most of yesterday was working down in Spectulator, ๐Ÿ’ป first from the library ๐Ÿ“š and then down by the lake in the afternoon. It wasn’t a bad day although around 4:45 pm it started to rain and I had to hurry back to my truck. โ˜” At Five I started home but stopped at Auger Falls, hiked down Old Route 8A, a snowmobile trail that follows the pre-1968 alignment of NY 8-30 past Auger Falls and then down to the falls. The old road and bridges have been completely removed but the original road cut is quite visible. Seems wider than Old Route 8B but I don’t think it is. Some pretty serious iron rust below the modern alignment – I don’t think it’s acid mine discharge but it sure was bloody red. Acid mine discharge as seen in Pennsylvania is very orange colored.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 9am. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 6 to 11 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 21 mph. With the breeze, won’t feel so warm. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 2017. 2.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

Busy day ahead. I want to do my morning walk i๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป and vote in the school election. ๐Ÿšธ Then I need to get down to work and edit that paper I have on my desk. ๐Ÿ“„ Then at lunch time I want to wash my truck ๐Ÿšฟ and be home by 1 pm for a work meeting. I told my folks I’d be out later for dinner after work as next weekend I may be out of town. โšก That said, maybe not the forecast is trending downhill. ๐Ÿ˜”

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 67ยฐ from the due south horizon (-3.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:34 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (298ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:14 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:46 pm, which is one minute and one second later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (237ยฐ) at an altitude of 56ยฐ from the horizon, 238,511 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:28 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 44 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 57 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 47 at 9pm. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 52 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1981.

Sunny and mild with a chance of showers this weekend before Memorial Day Weekend. ๐ŸŒžSaturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

While I have my therapy session on Friday again ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธI am not sure if after that I will head out of town. But seems like the forecast is trending wetter โ›ˆ๏ธ and I just got back from the Adirondacks. If I were to go anywhere this weekend I’d be would either be Madison or Schoharie County in Central NY. Schoharie might be good in a couple of weeks once the strawberries ๐Ÿ“ are out or come the first weekend of summer the Mine Kill Pool. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ No muzzles this year and the pool has been rebuilt with a new pump.

I don’t anticipate doing much more time up in Spectulator, โ›บ mainly because I’ve been there a lot this past year and as remote work ๐Ÿ’ป inevitably winds down there will be less opportunities to work up at Lake Pleasant or nearby areas with cell service. ๐Ÿ“ถ With Piseco Powley Road open again the Potholers will probably be my go to in the summer months. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

It’s possible the next time I head out of town is Memorial Day Weekend ๐Ÿ—ป but I’m really loathed to go to the Adirondacks that weekend with the crowds and black flies. Could I remote work that Friday somewhere I have cell service? Yes. Will I don’t know. Forest Road 71 in the Green Mountains is a possibility. Or maybe I’ll stay home that weekend. Going to probably need to work a few hours that weekend so I’ll need cell service. Maybe that means back to Spectulator but I’m loathed to do that again.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy skies with rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 41 degrees. Kind of a cool and wet day. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1918.

Stoney Creek South

April 18, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท! Three weeks to Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍ . Soon time to get the Frank Zappa record out ๐ŸŽผ while looking at the tulips at Washington Park. Mostly cloudy with a few breaks of sun and 42 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 49 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1976. 2.7 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„

No big plans for today, but after I take my shower ๐Ÿ›€ I’m thinking of hiking down to Van Dyke Preserve and then back out to Five Rivers. ๐Ÿฆ I also have some coding projects I’m working on, along with fixing a long-standing bug in the blog code that occasionally causes posts to appear too early or stick on the front page when they shouldn’t appear. Kind of the same thing I did yesterday, spending several hours looking at birds and wildlife at Five Rivers, although with the cold wet weather, there were fewer wildlife but I think I spotted a piebald deer ๐ŸฆŒ but he was gone before I could get a picture.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.3° from the due south horizon (-12.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:03 pm with the sun in the west (280°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

The sunset is in the west-northwest (286°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:41 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 8:10 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (243°) at an altitude of 61° from the horizon, 245,556 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:46 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 53 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒ“, with a low of 39 degrees at 4am. Typical for tonight. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 28 degrees. The record low of 18 occurred back in 1875.

Found another real long-standing bug on the blog. ๐Ÿž For years, I’ve had issues with posts appearing too early and staying sticky on the blog. Turns out I was just missing the GMT date field on my blog, when creating new blog posts programmatically, Not sure how I missed that but I’ve been coding things incorrectly for years on the blog.

Been having more problems with my credit card. ๐Ÿ’ณ I went to buy milk yesterday, ๐Ÿฅ› and I was locked out of the card, with it declined at the retailer and I ended up paying cash. I got home and saw a few pending charges I did not make, so it looks like my card has been hacked again — only had the new card for a week and only so far bought milk with it and went to Walmart twice. I didn’t think it was that easy to hack the chip-on-cards as they use one-time tokens, and I haven’t swiped anywhere yet. Monitoring for other pending charges, but so far nothing. Hoping I won’t have to get yet another card. Need to get this figured out as I have to renew my cellphone/hotspot by Wednesday. Aggravating to say the least, especially as I don’t do much online shopping but I like the convenience of not having to have exact change.

Really hoping next week to get out of town. ๐Ÿ• It looks like by then the snow will be gone, and while Sunday is problematic, I think the weather will be a lot better for Saturday. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Things could shift weather-wise, but I’m hopeful. Not sure if I will drive up north on Friday after my therapy session, or wait for Saturday morning early to head north and hike then camp. ๐Ÿš˜ Kind of would like to do two nights. It just seems like every weekend that I have free it turns out to be cloudy and rainy. And then we don’t end up getting much rain at all.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍ when the sun will be setting at 8:04 pm with dusk at 8:36 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold, partly sunny and temperatures between 45 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 67 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 1979.

Last Week

January 18, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Today is Martin Luther King Jr Day. โ™ฅ The holiday formerly known as Abraham Lincoln’s birthday, it was changed to honor M.L. King after Ronnie Reagan decided he needed to win more black votes, and the consternation of some states, most notably Arizona which had rather racist representatives and didn’t want to honor an insurrectionist. Today also is Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ ! The day we mark the birthday of A. A. Milne, the man who created the beloved bear who had a thing for honey. Nowadays, bears are mostly interested in rummaging through rednecks’ burn barrels in Tioga County, PA to chew on half burnt moldy ham sandwiches and turkey carcasses flavored with burnt plastic. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Yum. Next Monday is 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Yes, the days have grown noticeably longer then they were a few weeks ago. ๐ŸŒž I’ve noticed it in the evening, although it’s not a pronounced as I’m not waiting downtown to catch the bus home at 5 PM. ๐Ÿš Cloudy, some red sky to the south, above one degree of freezing at 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Just imagine how much nicer it would be if we used Celsius? Be a half degree a I recon. I’ll take some honey. There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 6 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

M. L. King Day will have a chance of snow showers before 2pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between 2pm and 4pm, then a slight chance of snow showers after 4pm. I’d call that pretty cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 38 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 26th. Southwest wind 6 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became snow by afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1973. 7.9 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

My foot is feeling better ever since I got the athlete’s foot cream on it, ๐Ÿ‘ฃ and let it soaked. Amazing how fast as a bad athlete’s foot infection can go away when you kill off the fungus. I’ve been trying to make sure to change my socks more regularly, ๐Ÿงฆ and hopefully it won’t become a problem. I did get out for my evening walk, which was pleasant ๐Ÿšถ and not too cold. Forgot my muzzle, I mean to the non-III’ers, my mask but that was fine I didn’t see anyone on the street. ๐Ÿ˜ท I’ve not decided on whether or not I’ll go for a walk this morning, but I could go out to Five Rivers as it’sย  a work holiday. ๐Ÿฆ Not real nice day but who doesn’t like a good walk? Maybe I could do Van Dyke Preserve then walk out along the farms on Meads Road out to Five Rivers like I did last weekend. Or maybe that’s a crazy an overly ambitious idea, and I shouldn’t see if I could injure my foot first.

Breakfast this day was scrambled eggs with chopped peppers and ham. ๐Ÿณ It was a pretty good breakfast and now after having another cup or two of coffee โ˜• I should clean up the kitchen next and get the bed made so I can get out. I don’t want to dilly around too much and waste all day, although the weather isn’t going to be great.โ˜ But it’s silly to delay all day. It will be dark out before you know it, despite the longer days.๐ŸŒ† What’s the Gordon Lightfoot song I was listening to on the bus the other day?

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:07 pm with sun having an altitude of 26.9ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 4:08 pm with the sun in the southwest (235ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:51 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 5:22 pm, which is one minute and 13 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (195ยฐ) at an altitude of 45ยฐ from the horizon, 249,828 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:57 pm. At sunset, look for snow showers ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 37 degrees. Warm enough the roads will be fine. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 52 seconds over today.

This afternoon going out to the folks house for Sunday dinner, ๐Ÿ˜‹ and I also want to get the rest of the system updates installed on the Winders side of my laptop and get that Cisco program installed so they can telnet in and get all the VPN network drives mounted. ๐Ÿ’ป At least I won’t have to be going downtown as much now when I need to file paperwork or get things off the server, or as mostly has been happening, asking friends to send me files that I need off the server. I really hate using Winders, but sometimes you just got to do it because it’s popular because of all the commercial advertising. If only the feds has stuck to their UNIX-mandate a few more years longer.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 4th. Maximum wind chill around 19 at 12am; Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light after midnight. In 2020, we had light snow. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -28 occurred back in 1971.

Cold next weekend with temperatures running 7 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Finally, some sun, but you’ll be using your heat. Welcome to the poor house with all your money going to the frackers! And probably 50 cents to the dirt-poor dairy farmer getting a royalty check for the 10 acres of cropland they forfeited for two decades. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 26. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 22. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees. While the temperature normally this time of year starts to moderate with the longer days and higher sun angle, it’s

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 61 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผTomorrow marks 60 days, if you do the math. But I expect many cold, much colder then today, days before then.

As previously noted, next Monday is 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 5:00 pm with dusk at 5:30 pm. On that day in 2020, we had rain and temperatures between 39 and 22 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 31 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1938.

Dog in the Mouth

December 18, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Bake Cookies Day ๐Ÿช! A good cold snowy โ˜ƒ day for baking cookies. Next Friday is Christmas ๐ŸŽ…. Partly cloudy and 9 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a north-northwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is -2. There are 21 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I am up early but it doesn’t seem likely I’ll be going for my morning walk โ„, but I guess that’s okay as it’s cold outside. Hopefully by the evening. I can be cranky about the incompetence of town leaders but what can I do about it, a less than humble boy ๐Ÿง’๐Ÿป from the sticks. Maybe I’ll ride my exercise bike ๐Ÿšฒ later and go for the walk around 5 pm, by when hopefully most of snow will be cleaned up.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 30 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal. North wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 1921. 17.0 inches of snow fell back in 1887.โ„ Seems small after yesterday’s snow storm.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (230ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 26 seconds with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 23 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southwest (199ยฐ) at an altitude of 27ยฐ from the horizon, 241,320 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for mostly sunny skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 27 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 3 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 10 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 4 degrees at 6am. 16 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -3 at 4am; Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 6 degrees. The record low of -13 occurred back in 1973.

Project SCORE, the world’s first communications satellite ๐Ÿ›ฐ is launched today in 1958. Didn’t do much communicating compared to satellites today. A decade or so before the first GPS satellites. ๐Ÿ’ซ Of course it’s hard to imagine a modern economy today without satellite data or GPS technology to provide both timing and location data.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 30 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees below normal. Light and variable wind becoming south around 5 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 18 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1895. 7.8 inches of snow fell back in 2008.โ„

I am thinking about going skiing ๐ŸŽฟ at Schodack Island State Park tomorrow with the binoculars and look at the winter birds. ๐Ÿ•Š Then maybe pick up some supplies at Aldi’s. ๐Ÿ›’ I should try to get an early start tomorrow while the sun is still shining.

Looking ahead to Sunday, a slight chance of snow showers before 1pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers between 1pm and 4pm, then a chance of snow showers after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. โ›… Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 35 degrees.

As previously noted, next Friday is Christmas ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. At least we are getting more sunshine in the afternoon. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 39 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.

Not sure if I’m getting up to the Adirondacks next weekend. ๐ŸŽ„ I want to but I’m not sure if that’s a realistic goal with the weather. Maybe Christmas Day through Sunday. But it’s going to be real cold. โ„ I don’t know.
