September 26, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 62 degrees at the Lake Pleasant. โ˜๏ธThere is a south-southwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 59 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 11 am.

I can’t believe how dark end dreary it got after a nice day. ๐Ÿ˜• Clouds just kind of pushed in and it got dark early. The nights are already pretty long but are even longer in this lousy weather. But at least tomorrow should be nicer. A few drops of rain ๐Ÿ’ง this evening but nothing major so far.

Today was a nice day with lots of color exploring Watch Hill on Indian Lake and Sawyer Mountain โ›ฐ which I was less impressed with. I thought about also hiking back to Rock Lake but it was already getting late and sunset is so early this time of year. I think if I did it again I’d either have skipped Sawyer Mountain – which is best enjoyed in the morning hours due to the overlook location – or spent less time at the Indian Lake library uploading photos slowly ๐Ÿ–ฑ๏ธon the very sluggish Wi-Fi that is common in the Adirondacks.

Spent some time laying in the hammock for a while and had a small fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, listening to podcasts until around 10 pm. Nights are long this time of year so it’s difficult to stay up particularly late. A bunch of loud motorcycles ๐Ÿ came through but after the thunderous rumble they were gone as fast as they came. While no Moose Festival this year in Indian Lake it was packed with motorcyclists when I drove through town.

Tonight will have isolated showers. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 57 degrees at 3am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Maximum dew point of 59 at 8pm. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had patches of fog in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 24 occurred back in 1947.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 78% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (159ยฐ) at an altitude of 23ยฐ from the horizon, some 240,582 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by March 28th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Hunter ๐Ÿน Moon is on Thursday, October 1. The darkest hour is at 12:50 am, followed by dawn at 6:22 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:51 am in the east (91ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 56 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:28 am with sun in the east (98ยฐ). Tonight will have 12 hours and 4 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 58 seconds over last night.

I think it’s the camp grittle that is attracting mice to my truck cap. When it’s not in the camper there doesn’t seem to be a mouse problem. ๐Ÿญ Of course tonight I spilled some rubbing alcohol everywhere and my truck cap smells like a doctor office ๐Ÿข so no mouse would dream of going near my truck cap. ๐Ÿ˜‚ I usually bring it to help clean my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป especially now with old Coronavirus being such a worry. ๐Ÿ‘พI doubt the smell ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป will last for long though. Alcohol is very volatile and evaporates quickly.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers before 9am. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 2pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 15th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 4pm. South wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 2017.

Not sure what my plans are for tomorrow ๐Ÿค”, been thinking about parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ at Sled Harbor ๐Ÿ›ท and hiking back to Pillsbury Lake. I don’t want to have to find a space to park in what is certain to be packed parking lot at the end of Old Military Turnpike. โš”

In four weeks on October 24 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (254ยฐ) at 5:59 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 47 minutes and 28 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 68 and 35 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 57 and 37 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 3 weeks, Halloween ๐Ÿฆ‡ and the Blue Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 5 weeks, Thanksgiving ๐Ÿฆƒ is in 2 months, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 10 weeks, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 3 months, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 15 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 17 weeks, 5:30 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† is in 4 months, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 19 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 21 weeks, and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 22 weeks.

Orchard Road

August 16, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ Calm wind. The dew point is 61 degrees.

Made it back home ๐Ÿก by around 9:15. Not too bad time as I left Danby around 5:30 and took NY 23 across the state for a change. Not the fastest way back home but I get tired of driving the same route back from the Finger Lakes. It was all and all a good trip and I got a lot rammed into the week while at the same time picking less crowded places to explore. Plus I had to stop for gas, โ›ฝ a bite to eat ๐ŸŒญ and a bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ break. Hopefully I didn’t get Coronavirus from pissing at the Interstate 88 rest area bathroom. I washed my hands ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป a second time good when I got home. ๐Ÿ‘พ

The Danby State Forest overlook was fine ๐Ÿ—ป but I really visited it during the wrong time of the day, the sun โ˜€ was in my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ and made it nearly impossible to get a good view of the overlook. Hot in that sun too. I’m not sure if I would drive Bald Mountain Road again, it sure was rough and parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ is very limited although next time I would have parked in designated Campsite 4.

I did enjoy poking around Catharine Marsh some more ๐Ÿฆ, I saw several Great Blue Heron, Semipalmated Plover, Monarch Butterfly ๐Ÿฆ‹ and lots of frogs ๐Ÿธ. While the loop trail through the woods is in disrepair, the former Airport Road Trail is hardened with gravel as it runs over a sewer pipe and offers more than a mile of trail to observe the marsh from points south and west along the Barge Canal. Really a great area. I want to study satellite ๐Ÿ›ฐ photos for future ideas on whether or not I can explore the area with a kayak ๐Ÿ›ถ.

Also the Watkins Glen Pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ was nice and not too crowded today. Stayed until 1 pm today, I would have stayed longer but there was a lot to see and do on my final day of summer vacation.

Tonight will be partly cloudy โ˜๏ธ, with a low of 59 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 61 at 9pm. Light south wind. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 40 occurred back in 1979.

Doesn’t seem like the big washout ๐Ÿ˜ญ they were originally promising for tomorrow. That’s fine its good to be home for a while and I have a busy work week ahead and sometimes being home means less distractions than trying to work from the woods. I did think ๐Ÿค” about staying at Cherry Ridge ๐Ÿ’ at least overnight but I decided it best to come home. I was out of food and for many reasons it just made more sense to come home and work from there.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 5% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 5:34 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:05 am in the east-northeast (71ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 4 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:43 am with sun in the east-northeast (77ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 9 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 35 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 74 degrees at 1pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 11th. Maximum dew point of 65 at 2pm. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became thunderstorm by afternoon. It became sticky as the day progressed. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1913.

It will be a busy day when I get stated in the morning ๐Ÿ“‘ but I’m ready for a good week that goes by quickly. Already thinking ๐Ÿ’ญ about a Schoharie County trip for next weekend including some time at the Mine Kill Pool. ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

In four weeks on September 13 the sun will be setting in the west (275ยฐ) at 7:08 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 46 minutes and 49 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 72 and 45 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 73 and 53 degrees. The record high of 92 degrees was set back in 1948.

Looking ahead, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 5 weeks, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 6 weeks, Last Sunset After 6:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 7 weeks, November ๐Ÿฅง is in 11 weeks, First Sunday of Advent โœ๏ธ is in 16 weeks, Saint Nicholas Day ๐ŸŽ… is in 16 weeks, Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ is in 4 months, Latest Sunrise of the Winter ๐ŸŒ„๏ธ is in 20 weeks and Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 26 weeks.

Along Osgood Pond

May 15, 2020 Night

Good evening! Rain and 63 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 60 degrees. More of a drizzle now but around 7 pm the sky was really pouring.

No evening walk ๐Ÿšถ due to the rain. That downpour and wind was intense for a while – it must have knocked down a tree ๐ŸŒฒas I heard somebody in the neighborhood with a chain saw. But as fast as it came it was gone.

I was working down at the library parking lot today and it started to get so hot with that sun โ˜€. Got to hook up the fan and maybe bring water but then I’ll need to run home for bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ breaks. The library Wi-Fi has gotten so popular lately – some times you’ll see a dozen cars in the lot with folks on their laptops. ๐Ÿ’ป But it’s fine, everybody is maintaining social distancing and my laptop stays charged off the sun.

Working on a new interactive mapping feature for the blog that will allow for large format maps that can be scrolled ๐Ÿ“œ left and right and maybe zoomed in based on the jquery library I eventually end up linking against.

Also been experimenting with historical topographic maps and removing their collars ๐Ÿ—พ which turns out to be super easy to do creating seemless historical maps of larger areas like Moose River Plains. The accuracy of those early USGS maps is amazing as long as you don’t zoom in too far beyond the scale.

Tonight will have showers likely, mainly before 1am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 6th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10pm. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Another night sleeping with the windows open. I like the fresh air and things are quite with everything shut down due to pandemic. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1980.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 35% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 12:53 am, followed by dawn at 5:01 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:34 am in the east-northeast (63ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 15 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and one second earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:14 am with sun in the east-northeast (70ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 2 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. North wind 7 to 9 mph. Should be a real nice day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

I’m thinking Thacher Park OSI parcel tomorrow from that lesser used trail head to the Nature Center at Thompsons Lake ๐Ÿฆ and some of the lesser used trails to the overlooks. ๐Ÿธ I want to do some bird watching and just general wildlife observation ๐Ÿ”ญ if I can find some quiet places to sit in the woods. I’ll definitely be wearing my jeans ๐Ÿ‘– that are treated with Permethrin.

I’ve really been struggling with the Lyme disease this time. ๐Ÿœ The doxycycline works but it’s not as effective as the first time I got Lyme last October and there are times I am sore and stiff. I do keep getting out – walking 5 to 10 miles a day around the neighborhood – but at times I feel exhausted and just so stiff and sore. I’m be out of doxycycline Tuesday and if I still feel like shit I’m going to call the doctor ๐Ÿ˜ท.

I went to the the laundromat and hardware store today. ๐Ÿ‘š Washed my clothes and sprayed three pare of older jeans and t-shirts with Permethrin. Users of it swear by it for ticks. Certainly the Army uses a lot of it as do cattle farmers for fly control. I picked up two empty spray bottles so I’d have them to apply the chemicals. Mixing the chemical 20 to 1 with water wasn’t too bad, twenty oz of mixture pretty much covered three jeans and shirts. Didn’t see any staining or odors. I washed my hands carefully after use but noticed no incidental skin reaction. The chemical supposedly lasts six washings but honestly I’d probably reapply it before packing for any major camping trip or extended outdoor activity because if it knocks down the ticks it’s worth it without a question.

In four weeks on June 12 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:33 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 22 minutes and 36 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 50 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 77 and 56 degrees. The record high of 95 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 3 weeks.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿฆ…Only 1 week remains until the start of Memorial Day Weekend!๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

I made no decision about next weekend. โ›บ Unless the forecast calls for exceptionally nice weather next weekend the plan will be avoid the crowds Memorial Day Weekend and work only three days the following week, leave Thursday and take Friday off celebrate the unofficial kick off to summer with fewer crowds and the potholers a little warmer.

September 19, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Ten weeks until Thanksgiving.๐Ÿฆƒย We are the same distance between now and Thanksgiving, and the First Day of Summer and Labor Day. Sunny and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. Foggy ๐ŸŒ in the city. As they say, winters coming. It’s only going to get colder. I caught the local to work ๐Ÿš as was running late as I got looking at a map, trying to plan out my vacation. ๐Ÿ‚

I might order a good West Virginia map like a Rand McNally as because the National Forest map I have is excellent but the same can’t be said about the AAA map which covers three states down that way. ๐Ÿ—บย I think I could make my route using that map but a better one on Amazon is like $5 and I might discover things that I would overlook. Regardless, I want this year’s trip to be better planned than last year.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Calm wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1946.

The sun will set at 6:58 pm with dusk around 7:27 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, an decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 44 degrees at 5am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 3rd. Calm wind. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1979.

Awesome weekend on tap, with temperatures running 13 degrees above normal. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 81. Calm wind. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 85. Maximum dew point of 58 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 70 degrees.

This evening I’ll head to the store ๐Ÿฌ and get the supplies I need and Big Red gassedย up. โ›ฝ Right after the Pine Bush hike I want to head up to the Adirondacks for a final overnight trip at the potholers. After this, I probably won’t be back to Piseco-Powley Road until next June or July — we will see — but I think with the colder weather coming and the fact that area is prone to lake effect snow.๐ŸŒจ I’d wait until next weekend, but who knows what the weather will be like by next week.

I stillย think it’s pretty neat that OGS agreed to reprogram funds for the combined heat and power plant ๐Ÿ”ณย for solar both on the plaza and in Oneida County. While I’m not a fan of developing more solar farms, it’s good to see the state is putting their money where their mouth is. They have a lot of room for solar at the State Office Campus, if they built over the parking lots and the ring roads. Putting solar over the roads makes a lot of sense in the snow climate we live in — no snow to remove and rain is blocked from motorists windshields.๐Ÿ”

In two weeks, the sun will be setting at 6:34 pm with dusk at 7:02 pm. ๐ŸŒ† On that day in 2018, we had partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 65 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 83 back in 1967.

July 26, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 66 degrees at the Allegheny National Forest. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. It’s a bit sticky earlier this evening but certainly not oppressive. Now comfortable.

It’s been quite a day but I survived unharmed and saw some beautiful country. I like taking the blue highways but twice this day I got cut off and had to slam on the brakes.๐Ÿ’ฅI also almost got hit in the parking lot at Quaker Lake but fortunately not. I was parked at the time with my engine off so it wouldn’t have been my fault but it could have required a police report ๐Ÿ‘ฎ and body work had it happened. Stupid other kid backing out. I was reminded by Waze that Sugar Run Road was closed so I ended up dwtouring by taking a scenic drive through Allegany State Park – I was going to say I’ve never been through it in the summer – but that’s not true I drove that way in 2017 due to another Penna DOT detour on US 6 and making a wrong turn. But that’s fine I wanted to buy some food for dinner – Then I got lost in Bradford Penna – first looking for a grocery store and then later looking for the road back to the Kinzua Overlook – PA 59. Oh, and I had to back track a bit on Cuba, NY when I realized the old road that I was using to Shunpiking the Southern Tier Expressway was a dead end.

It was a good day though, first starting out at Klipnocky Road in Gas Springs State Forest then taking down the hammock and alternating between the Southern Tier Expressway and other routes that I could find for Shunpiking. ๐Ÿš™ It’s so easy to wile away the hours in the hammock. But I have to admit having phone access most of my trip I’ve not necessarily used my time for productive uses, e.g. reading ๐Ÿ“–. It’s so easy to scroll through Facebook and look at stupid memes. Some neat little historic towns I passed through. I snapped a few quick pictures on the dash cam but I admit I probably should have stopped a bit more and took in the streetscape ๐Ÿ“น before it’s gone or visited more of the local businesses like the Cuba Cheese Store. ๐Ÿ•

I was running a little bit early so I drove up to Little Rock City. ๐Ÿ“ท Not much has changed since I was there in 2013 during my autumn trip out there. ๐ŸThe past two off year trips I’ve shunned Western NY for West Virginia.

I also drove down to Allegany State Park to swim, ๐ŸŠ and the new bath house ๐Ÿ›€ was a dank and smelly as it was last time. The ventilation and drainage of the new bath house had never been right and I miss the vines and natural woods of the old one – the new one looks like standard suburban McMansion crap and the bathrooms while new are gross. The water was cold and not as clear in Quaker Lake as I remembered but that’s probably comparing it to Lake Erie whose water is particularly bad this year with severe blue green algea. ๐Ÿธ But the country driving out there was so beautiful.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 31st. That said, I expect it’s always a bit cooler here up in the Allegheny Mountains. Maximum dew point of 60 at 9pm. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1977.

I’m fairly happy with the campsite I have here at the Allegheny National Forest. The Allegheny woods with the mountain laurel and broad canopy above is so much different than the Adirondacks. It’s really unfortunate it’s such a long trip from Albany ๐Ÿ—ป because it’s such beautiful country. I guess for folks who live in Buffalo, it’s just a weekend trip and hardly special but I guess the same can be said about me and the Adirondacks, especially Piseco Powley Road.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ˜ with 20% illuminated. The moon will rise at 1:28 am. I’m not staying up for it tomorrow. The New Moon is on Tuesday night with a chance of t-storms. The Strugeon Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Wednesday, August 14th. The sun will rise at 6:03 am with the first light at 5:31 am, which is 58 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 25 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 55 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 81 degrees at 4pm. One degree below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 10th. So be it, August is just around the corner. Maximum dew point of 60 at 5pm. Southwest wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1955.

Tomorrow I’m heading back east to outside of Wellsboro where I have a camping permit for the night. โ›บ I want to stop at a few places on the way east, then explore the Pine Creek Gorge. ๐Ÿšถ I’m considering visiting the lumber museum, ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒฒ which is right on the way back and may also check out the completed block glass plaza in the little town whose name escapes me but used to a manufacturing hub for most of glass blocks used in buildings across the country. Maybe Port Allegheny? I’m glad at any rate I’ll be able to break up the long drive home into multiple days as I like to poke around on the back roads and not go too far in any one day๐Ÿš™ . At any rate, tomorrow is the last full day of vacation, Sunday by mid morning the focus will be on heading east on Route 6 then making a bee line for Albany on Interstate 88, so I can get home and unpacked and ready for a certain busy week at work. But I’m fine, it’s been a long time away from home and I’m starting grow tired of the travel.

In four weeks on August 23 the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes and 40 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 78 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1947.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is a month away, Labor Day Weekend Begins ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 5 weeks and Friday the 13th ๐Ÿ‘ฟ is in 7 weeks.

Vanderwhacker Wild Forest

December 2, 2018 Night

Good evening. Foggy and 43 degrees in Delmar. 🌁 There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. Finally fairly mild out for change. I had a nice walk around the superblock that has the high school. I’m back home, wash is put away watching a video with the lights dimmed to a red color for easy sleeping. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 1 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers after 3am. Areas of dense fog. 🌁Otherwise, mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 41 degrees at 1am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around October 12th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1976.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 18% illuminated. The moon will rise at 2:57 am. The New Moon is on Thursday night with mostly cloudy skies. The Cold Moon 🌝 is on Friday, December 21st. The sun will rise at 7:07 am with the first light at 6:36 am, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 45 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 18 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 7am. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 47 degrees at 12pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around November 19th. West wind 9 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 2009. 5.2 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

On Saturday I went for a hike out at Schodack Island State Park. I hiked down the main trail to the old ice house smoke stack, then over to the Shodack Creek overlook. There was a ton of hunters in the woods so I stayed on the main trails not to bother the hunters. I don’t know I don’t think it’s fun to hunt when you can see two other hunters in the woods. While I’m sure it was good hunting being an island and there was a lot of deer prints around but at this point I’m sure most of bucks are harvested. I had blaze orange hoodie on but I probably would have gone somewhere else where there wasn’t so many hunters in the woods next time. At one point I spotted three hunters within a short distance there. Apparently it’s shotgun not just bow there.

I decided to buy the USB 3.0 Hub. As expected it worked fine. I think it was a good deal. Not too overpackaged, although I would have preferred a cardboard to a plastic tray inside and the recyclable online order bag it came in was a bit unnecessary.🔌 It does seem like the Bluetooth dongle though doesn’t work very well – I ended up plugging that into the laptop directly to get the headphones working well for the short time I was watching a pre downloaded YouTube video from bed. 🎥 I’m really not that much of a YouTube fan.

Stocked up on lots of groceries at Walmart. I ended up spending like $66 but then again I now have a lot of food, probably enough for two to three weeks with some additional things when I run out next week – probably no more than $20. 🍖🍍One thing I like about Walmart is that they have lots of bulk packages and things tend to be less packaged and less costly on a per serving basis than many of the regular grocery stores. As I don’t have trash pickup where I live and I have to pay as I throw at the transfer station, I always try to minimize my waste.🚮 Plus it’s good for the environment too. 🌎

Leaving Walmart a lady flagged me down with a stalled car in the middle of the road. I stopped and looked at her car and she asked me for a jump start. I pulled over and looked at it getting out and I looked and her car was pouring coolant on the pavement.😮 I think she may have siezed her engine. I guess I should have given her a jump but I said with that much coolant loss, she really should get it towed. Maybe it would have made her happier to jump it but I didn’t want to blow a fuse and being in the middle of the parking lot I was worried about getting hit myself with shoppers trying to pass me in the lot.💥 Maybe I should have tried jump it but I doubt it would have helped her but maybe I would have felt less guilty about leaving her while she waited for the tow truck. But it was getting dark, I was tired after hiking.

Despite buying a ton of food, I ended up just reheating lasagna leftovers that I had taken home from the previous weeks Sunday dinner.🍛 It was already thawed out from earlier and I was tired and really had no place for it in the freezer.

While I’ve installed Android Studio on my laptop before, this weekend on Saturday night I wrote my first actually useful Android app. 💻 Works great, once I figured out that you had to put your phone in PTP mode for it to be recognized by Android Studio and that there is a special setting you have to use to allow Android Studio to work off line, as I lack internet at home besides my phone which doesn’t teather to my laptop. ๐Ÿ’ก Writing my own app means that I can create auto pearing with the Bluetooth and big simple easy to use buttons to control the light and brightness in ways I find most useful. Next with be to do the colored warm white / cold white lights I have on the other side of the room once I get that board rebuilt with the ESP 32 microprocessor that has Bluetooth built in. Just waiting for more of those boards from AliExpress. Maybe I’ll work on that over the Christmas holiday.

Spent some more time reading about Off-Grid Living. Maybe I’m not quite willing to do tiny house but it’s interesting to learn more about the lifestyle. 🏡 As a tinkerer and somebody who enjoys working with electronics and camping in the wilderness, it has a lot of appeal to me.โšก Reading and dreaming makes it easier to save more money where ever I can. It would be great to be as energy independent as possible and live as close to nature with out all the modern ways of doing things.

Continuing to work on updating weather data on the blog. With the year coming to a close now that it’s December, โ˜” I’ve been working on updating and further automating the weather records for the blog. I need to update all the record highs for the year, etc. Plus NOAA has changed the format they are doing the past yeas days conditions in so I have to update that in the records too.

Thinking about heading out of town next week. I am thinking taking 4-5 days to head out either to Chenango County or maybe the Finger Lakes. Both areas with the recent warm weather are mostly snow free and next weekend and the days around it looks to be sunny but fairly cool but it’s December.โ›บ Probably hot tent with the heater which is always fun. Nothing like a very cold and still morning sitting out with a hot cup of coffee โ˜• next to the heater. Maybe leave Friday and return Tuesday, a that looks like the best weather days in the Finger Lakes but things often change for the worse. Monday and Tuesday the woods would be free of deer hunters so I could have more solitude for small game hunting and even just going for a walk especially if it’s nice and sunny. 😎 Plus lots of solar power for camping. It’s been so dark and gray lately, I’d love some time in the woods with some blue skies.

Had Sunday Dinner at the folks. Stuffed peppers were good. Probably ate too much but it was a treat. 🍝I’ve cut all sweets except for blueberries and natural fruits out from home, and no more alcohol so it’s not terrible for a treat once and while. It was a nice walk in the fog after getting home so I burned a few calories.🏃 I’ve been trying to walk more these days. Fog wasn’t terrible driving home, the headlights work so much better now they are adjusted. For the heck of it I left the truck cap light on in my truck while eating desert and I panicked as I thought the low voltage shutoff had kicked in but no it just very foggy at my parents house.

Continuing to work on my neice’s Christmas gift. After painting the glass marbles with glow in the dark paint the hardware part is done but I want to write more color routines before I seal it up and finish it. Maybe next weekend if I’m home. Only like four weeks or maybe less until Christmas now. 🎄

Looking ahead, next weekend may be somewhat cool with 7 degrees below normal but otherwise sunny. ๐Ÿ˜€ Next Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 29. Next Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 34. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Still might be a great weekend to get out of town.

In four weeks on December 30 the sun will be setting at 4:31 pm,🌄 which is 8 minutes and 44 seconds later then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had snow, cloudy skies and temperatures between 16 and -3 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 16 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 1984.

Looking ahead, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 1 weeks, Festivus 🍖 is in 3 weeks, Ground Hog Day 🐻 is in 2 months, Daylight Savings Time 🌆 is in 14 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 15 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 18 weeks, Palm Sunday 🌴 is in 19 weeks, Easter 🐰 is in 20 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 22 weeks, Mothers Day 👩โ€ is in 23 weeks and Fathers Day 👨 is in 28 weeks. A lot of big Sunday holidays next year.

I’m tired. The red lights in my apartment have done their job making me sleepy. Good night.

Daylight Savings Time - Who observes it?

November 27, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Four weeks to Christmas ๐ŸŽ…. Snow, slop and 35 degrees in Delmar. โ„ There is a northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. It’s snowing fairly hard but it’s warm enough that it’s mostly slop on the roads, especially the secondaries. The roads are a bit greasy, but maybe not icy. What do I know I’m not driving, although I had to walk out in the slop to catch the bus. I brought a second set of socks, I’ll need them my work boots leak. Going to warm farther today so I don’t expect much accumulation.

Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow briefly around 4 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธย But I don’t expect much snow or problems getting my truck up to DeNooyer for the state inspection. I am hoping that will go well — the lights look good, and I’ve not noticed any problems while driving, except the rare time I crank the wheel really hard in a parking under very occasional conditions. I guess if something needs to be fixed, it will get fixed, and they shouldn’t have to wait for parts to be delivered, being the dealer, even if it costs a little more.๐Ÿ”ง I concede at some point there is a balljoint or something else that will need replacing but i don’t think it’s bad enough to warrant repair at this point as there is no handling problems in ordinary driving.

I was hoping to walk down to the express bus this morning but it didn’t happen because I was a minute or two too late. ๐Ÿš‰I was a bit hesitant with all the snow and then I saw the town plow come through. But I still didn’t want to rush and accidentally fall in the snow. Plus with all the slop everywhere hiking in this stuff isn’t fun even if I had leak proof boots. The local will get me where I need to go even if it’s slightly longer and less scenic. Interestingly enough, the streets are cleaner of snow slop in Albany then the burbs. Must be a little warmer in the city from the urban heat island effect.

Today will rain showers and snow likely before 11am, then a chance of rain showers between 11am and 4pm, then a chance of rain and snow showers after 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 40 degrees at 11am. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 4th. West wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than one inch possible. It’s going to snow a fair bit but accumulations will be light locally as it’s much too warm. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies, clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1896. 4.8 inches of snow fell back in 1940.โ„

The sun will set at 4:24 pm with dusk around 4:55 pm, which is 28 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for rain and snow showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 25mph. Today will have 9 hours and 22 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 36 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of rain and snow showers before 10pm, then a chance of snow showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 32 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around November 16th. West wind 8 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2017, we had clear skies with more clouds in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 18 degrees. The record low of 6 occurred back in 1951.

So I found replacement screws for my laptop and once they come I will put them in so the case isn’t flexing and the mother board isn’t loose.ย ๐Ÿ”ฉย I am holding off on the SSD drive for now, as while it seems they’ve come down in prices, now the issue is most of the sales are seriously back-ordered, and I don’t want to be stuck for weeks with my money tied up in something that isn’t going to arrive. ๐Ÿ’พย Even if it only takes a few minutes to install, I probably wouldn’t have the time to get the full operating system installed on it and everything heavy disk-IO like applications and certain GIS files moved over to it until the long Christmas or New Years weekends. They’re giving me both New Years Eve and Christmas Eve off this year, which is nice for a change.๐ŸŽ„ Lucky me.

I also did order the various little parts for the winter electronics projects from AliExpress I’m working on, including the additional LOLIN32 microprocessors, so I can upgrade the colored lighting controller later in the month, when we have shitty weather and I’m stuck at home. ๐Ÿ”ฌGetting much better at soldering too.ย Soldering and coding is a break from so much of the shitinessย that is social media and the news nowadays.ย ๐Ÿ’ฉย

The latest forecastย ๐Ÿ”ย suggests this isn’t going to be a great weekend for getting out of town,ย with the north country getting pounded with more snow today, and the forecast looking increasingly cloudy for the weekend.ย ๐Ÿ•ย Next week I might take off some time though to travel or hike. I would like to spend some more time in the wilderness. Maybe I will do a mid-week evening hike up Overlook Mountain, that’s always a fun December hike to see the sunset. It’s tough to plan on getting out, with the snow coming so early this year, and being so cold and gray.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Christmas ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. By that time of year you can start to notice the days getting a little longer. On that day in 2017, we had snow, heavy fog, freezing fog, mist, squalls, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 33 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1889.
