May 31, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Where did May go? Still not June despite what I thought yesterday. May had 31 days. Next Sunday is Strawberry Moon ๐Ÿ“. Mostly sunny and 51 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜€ There is a northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

Out hiking in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve and surrounding lands today. ๐Ÿšถ Doing some bird watching ๐Ÿฆ and plant identification ๐ŸŒฟ with some of my fellow citizen scientists, doing the kind of work that only people not affiliated with the government and governments and corporate grants can do. ๐Ÿ’ต It’s not to say government workers are bad people but they have to put food ๐Ÿฒ on the table like the rest of us. Definitely a beautiful day for sure. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Lots of people in the Pine Bush ๐ŸŒฒ๐Ÿ‘ช which is good for advocacy even if not as good for our research purposes. Not so many Karner Blue today due to the cold weather but lot of pretty blue lupine to look at and a fair number of grasslands birds although mostly common ones.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 30th. Northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2013.

Regardless a beautiful day. ๐Ÿธ I might go to Black Creek Marsh later for more wildlife observation although midday ๐Ÿ•› might not be a very good time a dig might be better to wait for early tomorrow morning or around dusk tonight. I also didn’t pack much of a lunch so that’s a consideration too. ๐Ÿ” I probably should have packed a lunch but I stayed up too late last night ๐ŸŒƒ watching the protest, and was groggy ๐Ÿ˜ด and get a late start.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:45 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 48 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (182ยฐ) at an altitude of 49ยฐ from the horizon, 226,344 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:44 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 56 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. Going to be chilly, if I do decide to go to the Black Creek Marsh, I’ll want long sleeves. ๐Ÿ‘š Today will have 15 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 30th. Northwest wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light west after midnight. Going to be a chilly night. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 49 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1945.

Been reading ๐Ÿ“– a book I got out about the practice of welding and metal work. ๐Ÿ‘ท Welding is very much a skill of practice and I might some day get a welder when I own my own land and have a shop. Welding is a good skill to fix broken farm machinery ๐Ÿšœ or even fabricate something like a farm trash incinerator that I can use year round safely when I own land. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I’ve been doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“š about things besides politics, history and contemporary events because there is much in the natural and physical world I want to understand better. ๐Ÿฎ Cows and tractors, birds and bees ๐Ÿ are remarkably important parts of our world and I’m woefully ignorant. ๐Ÿ›

As previously noted, next Sunday is Strawberry Moon ๐Ÿ“ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:05 pm. Close to the latest sunset of the year. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1999.

February 15, 2020 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 20 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌃 There is a south breeze at 15 mph. 🍃. The current wind chill is 6. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Cold but reasonable. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 9 am. 🌡๏ธ

Cold evening but not that bad. 🌃 It is reasonable for this time of year. Tomorrow is going to be pretty mild. Busy day today with Pine Bush things and the Reszin Adam’s documentary but at least was decent if cold. Didn’t get a lot of video 📹 of Rezin talking but some good b roll 📼 and a few discussions. The Pine Bush meeting was good 🌲🌲🌲as was lunch at Yonder Farms. 🍏 Always like the cookies 🍪 and sweets there. They are making good progress on fighting the Crossgates Maul development but they’re is much more to do.

I got a few hours put hiking and even climbed to the top of the long closed Greater Albany Landfill 🗻 to watch the sunset. I haven’t been up there in years. Eventually thought the Pine Bush commission is planning a trail over the landfill which will have great views of the Pine Bush Preserve and surrounding areas.🌄 It will be fascinating to see how things look when they plant Pine Bush grasses and maybe even Lupine on the landfill once it’s fully closed in a few years. Technically that area is off limits right tbut it’s not posted and it was five o’clock on a Saturday evening and nobody was at the landfill. 🚮All things said and done the landfill isn’t that big of a deal compared to something like the acres of parking 🅿 at Crossgates but still when I own my own land, I’ll probably use a burn barrel or maybe better yet a forced air homemade incinerator 🔥 so I only have to go to the recycling center โ™ป less than once a year with a bag of cans and glass – which nowadays is less and less of the trash with plastics taking over. New formulations of PET have all but completely replaced glass 🍶 for everything but a few things like wine 🍷 and I don’t drink wine. That said, worrying much about landfills nowadays seems silly when they are proposing 10,000 acre solar farms everywhere. โšก

I bought a four pound bag of broccoli and two pounds of frozen 🌽 so I should be good on vegetables for a while. Probably will go shopping on Tuesday night after work I’m thinking now as it’s going to wash the salt off the roads 🚗 with the rain and I am probably good for groceries in the meantime. I really try to minimize 🚫 the amount of driving I do especially in the winter. It’s kind of nice to stay home and save for a better tomorrow, especially with road trip and camping season not that far off. โ›บ

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers, mainly between 1am and 4am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 19 degrees at 10pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 21st. Maximum wind chill around 6 at 9pm; South wind 13 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1943.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent 🌘 Moon with 49% illuminated. The Worm 🐛 Moon is on Monday, March 2. The darkest hour is at 12:11 am, followed by dawn at 6:25 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:54 am in the east-southeast (107ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 2 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:34 am with sun in the east-southeast (114ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 24 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 41 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 7th. South wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2006. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1958.โ„

This evening when I got home I got a $60 check from my dental insurance company saying that my dentist is out of network. 😷 I know I should be happy when they sent a check. Same dental hygienist and dental insurance, so I’m not sure the issue. Maybe a different dentist at the same office, they’re in and out in five minutes. Dentist hasn’t sent me a bill yet. 📄 I am hoping that I don’t get billed for the $177 that they billed the insurance for – there normally is no copay for normal cleanings. When I get the bill I’ll call 📞 and see if they will give me a better rate for paying in cash as I normally don’t pay with my insurance and it’s the same insurance policy I had with my new job as the old. An I will probably have to find a new dentist. The only other thing I can think of is maybe I visited the dentist one week short of six months ago – my insurance pays for twice a year cleanings but I’m not sure if they count days or two services per calendar year. Regardless! Frustrating 😤 though for somebody who is always trying to save money 💵 and run a tight budget.

Continuing to read Wiring Simplified by HP Ritcher et al. 🔌 While I’m not planning on any wiring projects in the near future, it’s a good skill to become more knowledgeable about and library books are free to read 📖. I want to be more knowledgeable about wiring and safety when I own my own land, as even if my house is off grid I’ll probably want some lights and wiring and off grid power systems are hardly maintenance free. Some of endless stuff about the code requiring outlets every so many feet in a kitchen seem kind of silly but on the other hand using robust equipment that is UL rated and safely installed, not drawing too much current over the wires is a big thing. โšก Arc fault sensors and GFIs have only become a bigger deal in the code lately, for good reason. Looking forward to the chapter about barnyard wiring 🐮 as barns have unique electrical challenges and safe wiring in barns is important with hay, water, rats 🐀 and livestock 🐮 chewing away at wires. The more I learn today the less to learn from scratch in the future. 🎓

In four weeks on March 14 the sun will be setting in the west (268ยฐ) at 7:01 pm (Daylight Savings Time),🌄 which is one hour, 34 minutes and 34 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly cloudy, mild temperatures between 59 and 39 degrees. I definitely could use a day that warm again. Typically, you have temperatures between 43 and 25 degrees. The record high of 75 degrees was set back in 1946.

Looking ahead, Ides of March โœ is a month away, Average High is 50 🌸 is in 6 weeks, Tax Day 💰 is in 2 months, Average High is 60 🌼 is in 9 weeks, Average High is 70 🐮 is in 13 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕๏ธ is in 14 weeks, Last Day of Session 🏛 is in 18 weeks and Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 18 weeks.

Stop Barrier Ahead

June 2, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 61 degrees in Dormansville, NY. โ›… There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 56 degrees. Not a terrible evening but the temperature is dropping quickly after a pretty warm day, especially mid-day. It didn’t get up to 80 degrees in my apartment today, but it did play around 79.5 degrees or so. Close enough, I guess. It wasn’t a bad weekend for sticking in town, and I got done the things that I needed to get done this weekend. Tonight, I’m staying over at the parents house with my truck camper. It’s a bit chilly of an evening, but not that bad.

It was kind of a busy weekend for me with all my projects, so I didn’t get out and do much big hikes,๐Ÿšถin part because every time I wanted to go out it looked like the sky could open up any minute.โ›ˆ I kind of got wet last night doing my evening walk, but it was nice earlier in the day on Saturday hiking in the Pine Bush, despite all of the stress of figuring out the battery thing and trying to return the hammock. ๐ŸŒฒ Those fields of lupine where beautiful! I accomplished most of my goals for the weekend. A few work things too, butย  they weren’t a big hassle and are just part of doing business this time of year.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 48 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 20th. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 58 degrees. The record low of 36 occurred back in 1986.

Tonight will have a New Moon.๐ŸŒ‘ The Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ is in 2 weeks. The sun will rise at 5:20 am with the first light at 4:46 am, which is 26 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 9 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have isolated showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 61 degrees at 1pm. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 22nd. West wind 8 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1925.

Today I added EEPROM functions to my display in my bedroom, adding the ability to record the daily high temperature and low temperature, along with maximum dew point and all time high and low. I also finished soldering on the waterproof temperature probe which I hooked up outside my bedroom ๐ŸŒก– and downloaded the libraries that I will need to make it work.โš™ I’m hoping to find some time to write code to add those functions to my display. I also ordered a few barometric pressure sensors from China (42 cents a piece!) as it would be nice to have that on my display in my bedroom — I”d like to be warned when a storm is approaching and the pressure is dropping, and likewise when fair conditions are expected. Sure I could get that information from the Internet and feed it into the display, except I choose not to have Internet at home except for my smartphone. Could I write an Android app to beam that up to my display — probably — but I don’t feel like digging that deep into the API.๐Ÿ’ป It’s kind of a crude display, but I find it entertaining to have all kinds of facts and silly quotes and the alike beaming across my room to my bed.

I didn’t have a lot of new and exciting content for the blog, although I did post a bunch of essays I’ve been working on over time, some of them a bit more political, but that’s fine. Tonight I tried to catch up, with a bunch of new content. I like to share my thoughts, and if they aren’t for you, that’s fine, feel free to skip on past them for other content or filter out just the maps and photos. I installed that second battery in my truck, which should make for much better results when doing extended camping trips, especially in shaded campsites. I probably should re-work or make some more maps up, but I’m kind of running out of ideas for maps for New York and I don’t really want to gather all the data necessary to make maps up of other states, especially places I don’t know well.๐Ÿ—บ

I am very happy with how things are preforming with the second accessory battery in the truck, as I noted earlier. ๐Ÿ”‹ While I haven’t really stressed the system yet with a heavy load at camp, it does seem like things are working really well, with stable voltages in the truck cap, and lots of storage so I should be able to go multiple nights, even in cloudy or rainy weather without having to start up the truck. Many times, especially when driving on nice days with the kayak off the roof of my truck, I think I’ll be able to leave the accessory power for the truck cap, CB radio, phone, and dashcam entirely disconnected from the alternator — solar does everything. That will keep the batteries from being overcharged or unbalanced and minimize the load on the alternator. I’ve notice no odors or issues from the battery being located in my sleeping unit.

Next weekend looks like it might be perfect weather-wise. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Next Saturday, sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 52 at 7pm. Next Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 56 at 5pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees. I’m not planning to head out of town next weekend but I could change my mind. I’m thinking in participating in one of the trail day events, and maybe the Gas Up on Sunday. I could go out camping but I think I’d rather wait. I’ll have o think about it some more, but I expect a busy week this week, so I don’t want to be running around to head out of town this weekend. Plus, I honestly don’t trust we will have real nice weather by next weekend, as the forecast will certainly shift downward, as so often happens with the weekend forecasts lately. I guess I could head out of town next weekend, but I just don’t see it likely, as I kind of want to be home early on Sunday as Monday is my oil change/tire rotation day (NOT a SESSION DAY!).

I’ll have to research some hammocks to replace the ripped one. I’m very disappointed about the quality of the LL Bean one I bought but I’ve seen a lot of affordable options on the Internet — affordable for me being sub-$50. If you pay premium, you’d hope they stand behind their products. But corporate profits are more important now. I probably would like to have to relax and maybe camp in by the next time I head out of town in two weeks or so.๐Ÿ’ค The one I had was a disaster ever since I bought it, so I’m going to look at alternatives. I have the straps and the carbineners, so I just need the hammock itself. And I like the hammocks enough, that even if I have to replace them time to time, I guess it’s worth it. Maybe I’ll be gentler on my next one. Figuring gasing up my truck costs over $60, I can’t complain that much about other ordinary camping expenses.

The stuff I’ve bought from LL Bean lately has been all crap lately,๐Ÿ’ฉ so I’m thinking I’ll probably just cancel my credit card with them, and take full advantage of the bank rewards card I currently use with the cash back. I’ve earned like $200 in statement credits over the past year with that card — just buying the normal things I buy like gas, food and supplies, and I don’t spend a lot of money.๐Ÿ’ณ It’s not a lot of money, but it’s still nice to gather a few pennies for things I was going to buy at rate. I don’t go out of the way to get rewards, I just buy the ordinary stuff I need to live. It’s nice it’s just points that I can convert to statement credit on my card — and it’s real money used to pay my purchases. Not a lot, but every buck helps.

In four weeks on June 30 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 9 minutes and 36 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, humid weather with mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 94 and 64 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1964.

Looking ahead, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 2 weeks, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 6 weeks (skinny dipping is fun), Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 13 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 3 months, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 16 weeks (yeap, it’s coming) and Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 19 weeks.

Sandy Bank of Cheney Pond

June 1, 2019 Evening

Good evening! Clearing a bit with rain showers and a few rumbles of thunder around and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 58 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 9 pm. A few fireflies around. Not a lot, they’ve been tardy with the cold spring. ๐Ÿ

We had some heavy rain for a while. I got caught out walking in the rain. โ˜” But now it has stopped and I’m sitting out back. ๐ŸšถI bought some milk and ice cream and are now sitting out back as the rain has stopped. ๐ŸจHappy Dairy Month! ๐Ÿฎ It wasn’t that bad of a day but pretty busy. Lot of little things to get done.

Tonight will be scattered showers and thunderstorms before 2am, then isolated showers between 2am and 5am. Patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around July 3rd. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2018, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Tonight will have a New Moon. The Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:19 am with the first light at 4:45 am, which is 28 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 8 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 1pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 77 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 10th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 12pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 8 to 17 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1895.

I accomplished everything I planned on doing today which was good. ๐Ÿ‘ The big thing was buying the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ and getting that hooked up, so I’ve doubled my storage for camping. The solar works well on the truck except during long cloudy periods and I’m producing enough power to really float the batteries relatively quickly. It was easy enough to tap into the bus bar although I had to exchange the first battery I got because I got the wrong size and when you get batteries to run in parallel you want the same size so they charge properly. But I got that battery returned and ended up having to go to Glenmont Walmart for the battery as only one in Albany was over a year old. The Glenmont store had a battery dated 6/19 so it must be pretty new. Granted a few things about set up isn’t perfect but I plan to experiment and with costs under $120 it’s not the end of the world. I’m continuing to learn a lot.

It was a nice walk ๐Ÿšถ today at the Albany Pine Bush Preserve with lots of lupine around. It really was fields of purple. I didn’t spend a lot of time hiking there but enough to enjoy it. Didn’t see any Karner Blues unlike I did a few weeks back but I was hiking in a different location. ๐ŸŒฒ

I tried warranting the hammock but because the rip wasn’t at seem they wouldn’t exchange it. The hammocks aren’t expensive so I’m going to try to get one online somewhere. They are a lot of fun and for under $50 are worth it. ๐Ÿ˜ That said, it won’t be an LL Bean hammock as I don’t use that credit card ๐Ÿ’ณ anymore in favor of the cash back card I have with my bank. I don’t mind that much, that LL Bean hammock was shitty from the day I got it and with my rewards card only spent $4 and the hammock straps are still good.

Hooked up the outside temperature probe for my display, ๐Ÿ“ˆ and used thin wires to sneak it out past the window screen so I can keep it hooked up with the windows closed. Unfortunately I can’t test it because I don’t have the necessary libraries to make it work. I’ll have to download them tomorrow. In the process I accidentally disconnected a wire and things stopped working but they are good now. It will be interesting to monitor the outside temperature especially as cooler weather approaches come the autumn.

Tomorrow I’m planning on going to over John Wolcott’s house ๐Ÿก to keep going through his files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I found some interesting documents from the Erastus Corning Era. Then I’ll head over to my parents house for Sunday evening dinner. ๐Ÿ—

In four weeks on June 29 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 10 minutes and 29 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had hot, mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 89 and 62 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1944.

Looking ahead, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 3 weeks, July ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿฟ is a month away, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 6 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is in 7 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 2 months, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 12 weeks, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 3 months, Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 16 weeks and October ๐Ÿ›ฅ is in 4 months.
