Good evening! Snow flurries but otherwise partly clear with a bright moonlit sky on the fresh but icy snow and 21 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. 🍃 with gusts up to 29 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 8. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around 2 pm. 🌡๏ธ

Definitely a cold night with the wind but I turned up the heat before I left for work today and a few more degrees when I hit home so it’s very comfortable. With the mild weather all winter the heating bills have been quite modest. I stayed home and reheated the stuff shells mom made for my birthday 🎂. I rode the exercise bike for a half hour and then read 📖 more of that Almost President book. I played around with some code from the CDTA jquery stream but I doubt I’ll do much with it as I’ve run into a lot of cross origin issues with the browser and caching and fetching the data with my web hosting would be slow. Plus the CDTA website with the realtime map works well enough for me and I’m not that interested in sitting down and spending much more time coding it. 💻 I don’t like computer programming and writing software and scripts as much as I once did.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow showers before 11pm. Areas of blowing snow before 11pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 16 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Maximum wind chill around 5 at 6am; West wind 9 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1950.

Tonight will have a close to Full 🌝 Moon with 98% illuminated. Looks so bright out with the icy snow everywhere. At 10 PM, the moon was in the southeast (140ยฐ) at an altitude of 65ยฐ from the horizon, some 231,587 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 1st. It’s actually quite close relatively speaking but still – Buckle up for safety! 💺The moon is almost as high overhead tonight as the late summer sun. The Snow โ„ Moon is on Sunday, February 9. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:35 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:04 am in the east-southeast (111ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 12 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:45 am with sun in the east-southeast (118ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 45 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 25 degrees at 1pm. Eight degrees below normal. West wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. That wind is going to make it feel frigid and it will only get colder as night falls tomorrow. We’ll we were overdue for some cold. Winter lately has been coming late. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 52 was set in 1925. 14 inches of snow fell back in 1895.โ„

Not totally sure what the plans are for tomorrow. I have a did sweep the snow off Big Red but she’s covered with ice from the change over. I’m hoping the sun will quickly melt the ice in the morning. โ˜€ I might still go to Johnstown for the outdoors show but that’s a long trip for a relatively small little show especially if it’s too cold and windy to go skiing or camping there after. I’d almost rather stay home and save the gas if it’s frigid. Might also go out to the folks house tomorrow rather than Sunday as I’m concerned about snow on Sunday evening again.

In four weeks on March 6 the sun will be setting in the west (263ยฐ) at 5:51 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 31 seconds later then tonight. As the first day of spring approaches the sun becomes close to due west for the sunset. In 2019 on that day, we had cold, mostly sunny, snow showers and temperatures between 22 and 9 degrees. I wonder if our March this year will be so cold. Typically, you have temperatures between 40 and 22 degrees. The record high of 63 degrees was set back in 1974.

Looking ahead, Valentines Day โค๏ธ is in 1 week, 7 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 5 weeks, Spring 🌷 is in 6 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 2 months, Good Friday โœ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, May 🕊 is in 12 weeks, Flower Moon 🌕 is in 3 months, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 17 weeks and Strawberry Moon 🌕 is in 4 months.

Good evening! Partly clear and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing around 2 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

It’s actually a pretty nice evening, 🌃 and I sat out back for over an hour when it started to cool off a little bit. It wasn’t until quite late that it really started to drop off. Not going to be quite as nice in the Finger Lakes but not that awful either with each day expected to reach the mid 40s. Hard to complain about such weather on Festivus and I got a nice walk 🚶 before dark as I got out of work early today.

After which I came inside and rode the exercise bike 🚲 for a while listening 👂 to more of that trucker country 🚚 that I like from the late 1960s. That music 🎶 is crude and sleazy and sexist, probably gives one a taste of cigarette 🚬 and diesel 💨 on one’s mouth but it’s good for singing along especially if you’re not a real good singer and it has a good back beat. 🎸

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 28 degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 29th. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. Even milder last year. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1989.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 1% illuminated. The moon will rise at 5:38 am. The New Moon is on Christmas Day with mostly cloudy skies. The sun will rise at 7:22 am with the first light at 6:50 am, which is 28 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 7 seconds over last night. We never quite have 15 hours of darkness in Albany but if you go maybe to Warrensburg or there about, you do on the first day of winter. They have slightly longer summer days then more southerly locations but ultimately it balances out.

Tomorrow will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 36 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 16th. North wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. I remember that day we’ll, rained a fair bit then I went to my parents house – after working until 3pm and they lost power briefly while cooking Christmas dinner. Spent Christmas that year camping at the Cherry Ridge Camping Area in Madison County. 13 inches of snow fell back in 1966.โ„

I thought about testing the propane lantern 🏮 after work today but I have no where to test it around home. I normally hang it between trees on a rope at camp but there are no trees around where I live because the landlord cut down all the trees on his property to avoid liability and leaf removal costs, although in the summer neighboring property trees seem to provide enough shade to keep the buildings cool. I feel like the lantern should work now that I cleaned it a few weeks and if it doesn’t I don’t know how I’m going to fix it before heading out to camp on Saturday.

While I haven’t really planned out my whole camping trip yet โ›บ I do have some things in mind and I’m thinking about what I will need for camping and my packing list 📃. I might start doing a little packing on Christmas Day 🎄 as I told John Wolcott I’ll be over to his house on Thursday after work 🔎and then Friday I’ll have to finish packing and getting finished for camp as I don’t want to delay my departure. I hate driving NY 79 through Ithaca with all the aggressive drivers so I’ll probably take US 20 out but that’s a long drive. Alternatively I guess I could take NY 13 down through Cortland but that can be pokey too. Seneca Falls, decorated as Bedford Falls 🌉 is fun to explore during the holiday season, Montezuma Wildlife Refuge will be closed for the winter. 🐦

In four weeks on January 20 the sun will be setting at 4:52 pm,🌄 which is 26 minutes and 47 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow and temperatures between 21 and 0 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 2006.

Not sure I’m happy with the current voltage settings on the voltage switch. 🔋 Neither the starting or the accessory batteries were well charged today, but then again I only got like 30 watt hours of power today. It said that the starting battery charged for 3 minutes today, not sure if the switch tripped multiple times. I may have to push the switch up to 14.0 volts again but in the lousey sun angle โ˜€ of winter not sure if I’m going to ever have enough power to make it ever engage. I might raise the voltage for camping as maximizing the accessory batteries charge us kind of a priority with the long cold winter nights. It easy enough to adjust those settings.

So far I’ve been fairly happy with the red screen both on my laptop and phone 📱 but it’s a pain to get things adjusted just right. But once the settings are good enough I can just turn them on and off and hopefully that will help with sleep 😴. Definitely it’s good to tone down the blue light from my computer monitor 💻.

I really do watch too many farm, hunting, trapping and off grid living videos on YouTube 📹 but it’s a much needed change from my urban life and takes me to worlds far away from Albany. A camera can bring you into a tie stall dairy barn and see the milking and feeding, show how to skin and process a coyote pelt or even many the day to day parts of living off grid with limited electricity generated on site, heating irg wood, etc. 🐻Wisdom shared over a camera. Because I downloaded the videos and watch them offline, I don’t have to watch those stupid ads but I also don’t get to like or comment on people’s channels. But if I had the internet at home, I’d probably be distracted all the other mindless things to do on the internet. 😼

Some Snow on the Trees

December 16, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. There are 0.5 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ More coming tomorrow. Heading into a deep freeze the next few days. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at Sunday around 11 am. 🌡๏ธ

Tonight will snow likely, mainly after 4am. Cloudy 🌨, with a low of 26 degrees at 9pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 4th. Calm wind. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible. Might be a bit tricky with the commute, I’ll have to leave earlier tomorrow. 🚍 In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1942.

It should be a pretty morning when the sun โ˜€ comes up with lots of snow around. โ„ Might also be good for the Save the Pine Bush Ski trip 🎿 on Saturday. I’ve yet to decide about going up north on Saturday night, depends on how sunny it will be and how deep the snow is. I wouldn’t mind a nice night in the wilderness but it looks like it’s going to be pretty cold. โ›บ

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 61% illuminated. The moon will set at 11:38 am. The Last Quarter Moon will be tomorrow with a chance of snow showers. The is on Wednesday night. The sun will rise at 7:18 am with the first light at 6:46 am, which is 42 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, an increase of 24 seconds over last night.

It sucks thst I had to stay a little bit late last night at work to make up my late arrival, but so far that’s the first time I’ve been late to my new job.โŒš Its definitely a different experience being an hourly employee rather than a salary worker but at least most days I get to go home at five. It ultimately dudnt matter much because I gad a Save the Pine Bush meeting to go to.

Tomorrow will snow. 🌨 High of 30 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical North wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light drizzle by afternoon. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1984. 11.1 inches of snow fell back in 1970.โ„

I won some really nice things at the Pine Bush raffle last night. 🌲I don’t know how I managed to win so many things, granted the few things I really liked I tossed a bunch of tickets 🎫 and apparently I was drawn a few times. I should also donate a bunch to Save the Pine Bush – I did kick in a bit at the event but I was originally planning on spending more. Well I’ll have more money to spend at the dinner 💵 and maybe I should mail โœ‰ in a check or do the Go Fund Me page. I still don’t know how I managed to win so much stuff. Honest, I didn’t bribe the judge I wasn’t there when things were called. I was in bed by then. 🎄Well at least I’ll have some nice Christmas gifts 📦.

I got the voltage sensitive I ordered from China today. 🔌 I am going to test it and built the wire harness necessary to operate it starting tomorrow night after work and maybe have it hooked up by the weekend. My hope is by the weekend to have it up and running so I never have to worry about having a weak start if I’m parked out in the sun โ˜€.

I have to admit lately i find I really miss spending time out in the wilderness and in the country. โ›บ🐸🐷🐺🐮 I do hope that I get out to the Finger Lakes in a few weeks. I think its alk thr YouTube I estch lstely of those Idaho qnd Alaska off grid farm types – and all the other farm families that I watch that gets me craving the wilder side of life.😻The smell of the wood smoke and the dirt and manure. The sound of the axe and the diesel tractor. 🚜 Its so far away from Albany and the buses🚍and the suit and tie.👔

At any rate, Thursday is going to be a cold one after the snow โ„ falls. I think I’ll probably have to turn back up the heat. โ™จIt is what it is and honestly with the heat turned up its more comfortable in my bedroom.

The Weekend that Was

Saturday was an action packed day but a good one. I started the day pretty early with the Save the Pine Bush Bird Hike and Neil Reilly did not disappoint. I wish I had some better glass. I got to invest in some binoculars. And a good bird book. ๐ŸฆNeil helped me learn a lot of birds but will I remember them all? I really need to learn more about the flora and fauna I’m observing in the wilderness. It would help with hunting too, especially if I eventually get into big game when I own my own land. ๐Ÿ”ญ

I bought a spatula at the Hannaford in Esperance. Forgot mine at home. $10 with tax seemed pricey but I figured hopefully this all metal one will hold up. ๐Ÿด Then I can keep the big camp spatula for my camping supply box and use the other one at home. Unlike some of the spatulas I’ve previously owned this one is a single piece of metal so it’s less likely to break at the weld like some of the other I own. I burn a lot of food so I break a lot of spatulas scraping pans. ๐Ÿณ But now I have a camp and a home one and hopefully the home one lasts a long time.

Moss Island was fun but the colors were just changing and it’s the third time I’ve been there so it’s less interesting now. Still a nice hike, as was doing some of the Erie Canal Trail through the deep railroad cut. ๐Ÿšถ Japanese Knotweed is really taking over part of the gorge though. That invasive species is everywhere these days it seems. ๐ŸŒพWent out for a short paddle on the Mohawk River from Little Falls past Moss Island to the old Fink Basin Bridge foundation. ๐ŸŒ‰ It’s hard to spot the foundation at this point because the Japanese Knotweed is all over it. Needless to say, I’m very concerned about the Japanese Knotweed taking over everything. When they were pumping out the lock, the water Goya bit choppy but I was far enough away not to be real impacted. That Lock 17 drops 40 feet so it’s a pretty big lock with a lot of water to move downstream.

Leaving the Pine Bush hike I was a bit concerned about the squeak that was coming from the rear wheel of my truck. ๐Ÿšš It sounded like a brake noise because it changed when I applied the brakes. But they’re working fine and after a few good hard applies of the brakes they’ve mostly gone away. Think it’s either mud or maybe just glaze that’s built up from last week overheating the brakes heading down through Durham. Should have used a lower gear heading down the hill. Heading towards Stratford I smelled somebody burning their garbage and thought it might be the brakes but the smell went away after driving past their farm. Hillbilly incense getting me all upset. If y’all going to burn your plastic garbage, at least burn it in a hot fire so it don’t stink. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I checked, rotators aren’t warm and aren’t dragging – and after a few hard braking the noise is mostly gone. But it’s concerning enough I scheduled an appointment to have it looked at. Pretty sure it’s just the drum brake mechanism is acting up.

Driving up to Pisceo-Powley Road from Little Falls I stopped and got some sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ and tomatoes. ๐Ÿ… I then stopped at Green Acres Drive In and got Pumpkin Ice Cream ๐Ÿฆ๐ŸŽƒ which I swear the cream was a bit rancid. It was okay but I don’t think I’d get end of the season ice cream again from them.

I ended up camping at campsite five at Pisceo-Powley Road. โ›บ They cut up the tree that fell during that severe thunderstorm that came through โšก that mid August long weekend that I delayed my entry to avoid. I’m glad I missed that storm a lot of branches came down around this campsite but the DEC did a nice job cleaning up around the site. I like that campsite a lot because it’s remote and I can listen to music, ๐ŸŽถ shoot guns ๐Ÿ”ซ and burn whatever I want without bothering folks. ๐Ÿ”ฅJust like when I own my own land. No neighbors, no rules. ๐Ÿ“ But that doesn’t mean I’ll trash my own land. That said finding burnt out of aluminum cans wasn’t cool. I flattened them and will take home for recycling. It your going to burn stuff in the woods at least pack out what doesn’t burn completely. ๐Ÿšฏโ™ป Outhouse seat also seemed like somebody broke it. A shame, the outhouse is only a year old. Still works but the wood in the seat is cracked. ๐Ÿ’บ

The storm in August meant there was quite a bit of dead and down wood around camp. I had plenty for the fire. I always try to get wood a bit farther away from camp to save the close-by wood for other campers who get here late or myself for that matter. ๐ŸŒฒ

Setting up camp went well but I discovered that I spilled bleach and water in my truck bed. Ruined another pair of jeans ๐Ÿ‘–. Ducks but I needed more jeans to wear on casual days to work. I can wear the bleached pair of jeans at home. Made some sweet sausage ๐Ÿฃand mashed potatoes for dinner – along with sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ. I wanted to make angel hair pasta ๐Ÿ˜‡ with dinner but I forgot to pack butter.

Sun sets early this time of year but I had the mess cleaned up in my truck, dinner cooked and the lights strung by dark which occurred relatively late in the woods on this very clear day. ๐ŸŒ‡ Still it was pitch black before 7:30 which made for a long night but with the two batteries powering the lights it wasn’t a big deal. I got things done that needed to be done by then including getting a fire going. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Got cold and put the hoodie and long pants on. Even with the warm weather it gets cold at night. With the long night, I was shocked ๐Ÿ˜ฒ how quickly I drank the six pack I brought. ๐Ÿป I wasn’t trying to get drunk but I made a lot of beer dissappear quickly. Oh well, I must have been thirsty and I slept it off. Minor hang over this morning.

This morning was quite nice I had eggs ๐Ÿณ and sausage along with coffee. โ˜• It was a cold start but it warmed up relatively quickly. I ended up hanging out in the warm sun for a while, listening to the radio ๐Ÿ“ป for a while and then swinging in the hammock while working on some blog posts.

Midday I went for a kayak paddle down the East Canada Creek ๐Ÿšค and it was quite colorful and quiet out on the creek. Water levels were pretty low. But I made it over the beaver dam and the leaves were nice. ๐Ÿ Didn’t bother with the fishing pole as I’ve never had much luck fishing there. Spent a little time at the potholers but it was quite cold and the sky had clouded up and it was getting late.

I got home, unpacked and scheduled an appointment for next week to have my truck looked at.๐Ÿ”ง The noise seems to come and go but I think it’s getting worse so I should get it fixed. I’ll probably stay in town next week because I need to save money ๐Ÿ’ต and I also I don’t want something to break while I am out of town.

I’ll post more photos ๐Ÿ“ท and videos ๐ŸŽฅ throughout the week.

South Mountain

May 11, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 50 degrees with the moon overhead camping here at Stewart Landing. ๐ŸŒœ There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The skies will clear Wednesday around 9 am.

Laying back in the hammock, listening to music, relaxing. ๐ŸŽถ A very nice evening for sure. I have all warm white lights hung up for a change, I bought one of the strings at an after Christmas sale. They are in some ways nicer than the colored strings. The hammock is nice, first time using it camping since Labor Day although it still fairly cold so I’ll sleep in the truck.

The truth be told I’m not a big fan of the campsites up at Stewart Landing as they are too closely spaced in my book for a true wilderness experience and they are muddy with too much litter but it was a nice day hiking back to Hilderbrant Vly and Glasgow Pond, finally spelled correctly. ๐Ÿšถ Ten mile round trip and the trail is lightly used, not too eroded although lots of flooding and mud holes due to the old roads being lower than the surrounding lands. I doubt I’ll ever come up here again but change is good as are new adventures. I have to say this was first adventure I’ve done in a long time I’ve truly enjoyed. I like being in the wilderness and doing something new and different for a change.

I’ve fallen into the trap of doing the same thing week after week but sometimes changing things up can make time go by slower,โณand make things more memorable and enjoyable. I mean that I like the potholers but I feel like I go up to Piseco-Powley Road and Moose River Plains so much it’s getting boring. I haven’t made any decisions yet but I really should do something different for my summer vacation and not do the same thing in the Finger Lakes National Forest yet again.

Once black fly season is done, ๐Ÿœ I’m going to do more wilderness lightweight hammock camping. โ›บ I would probably truck cap camp the first night driving up from Albany and on Saturday hike back in the wilderness with minimal gear – flashlight, hammock, can of something for dinner or frozen hot dogs, pan for cooking, phone for music, and a battery pack for backup.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 41 degrees at 4am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 27th. North wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969. I don’t think we have to worry about ice tonight.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ” with 62% illuminated. The moon will set at 2:27 am. The Full Moon whose name I forget ๐ŸŒ• is on Friday night with a chance of showers. The sun will rise at 5:39 am with the first light at 5:06 am, which is one minute and 9 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ I wake up so early with the early sunrise. Tonight will have 9 hours and 26 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 13 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 53 degrees at 4pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 4th. Southeast wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1881. There was a dusting of snow in 1996.โ„

In four weeks on June 8 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 25 minutes and 10 seconds later then tonight. Remarkable to think June is only a month away. That weekend I might be up at Piseco-Powley Road and might do the potholers and maybe visit Little Falls. In 2018 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 80 and 58 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 54 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 2011.

Looking ahead, okay I remember the Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 1 week, June ๐Ÿน is in 3 weeks, Average High is 80 ๐Ÿ– is in 6 weeks, Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… is in 9 weeks, Ugly Truck Day ๐Ÿšš is in 10 weeks, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 15 weeks, September 11th ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 4 months and Average High 70 ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 19 weeks.

Sheridan Mountain Beyond Devil's Clove

May 11, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! The Sunday before Mother’s Day. ๐Ÿšบ Next Saturday is Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ•. Partly cloudy, but clearing and 53 degrees โ›… up at Stewart Landing campsites in the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿ—ป There is a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. A bit chilly when the sun dips under the clouds, laying back in the hammock with the breeze blowing around. The skies will clear around 11 am.

At 4:15 pm Friday I decided to come up camping. โ›บ I had nothing packed or bought for food ๐Ÿฒ but I decided to leave work, grab my camping gear and head out. I figured I would beat the severe thunderstorm getting home โšก and then get packed while it was ongoing and from there after it was over, after rush hour head out of town. I stopped for some groceries and gas and went out to Stewart Landing. I got caught off at the same exit on the Crosstown Arterial in Albany I got rear ended on five years ago but this time I was able to avoid an crash though horns were mashed and brakes slammed. I may have urinated a bit in my pants over that. Yikes. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ People ask why I ducking hate motoring so much. The Thruway was completely blocked for a while due to a motorcycle crash, according to the CB radio ๐Ÿ“ป but after 15 minutes it freed up and I was moving. It such a ducking bad drive up here with smearing rain the whole way.

Because I had to shop, get gas and get packed, despite leaving work early, I didn’t get to camp until close to 8:15 around dusk ๐ŸŒ† but the campsite was fine except for the litter ๐Ÿšฎ, broken glass and thumb tack ๐Ÿ“ I had to clean up. A lot of litter around here I had to pick up which was annoying but the campsite is mostly cleaned up and I fixed up the fire pit. I’ll bring some of the litter home but the bigger stuff – burnt chair frame, burnt out car radio, lots of burnt wire – I’ll just toss in the pile of other debris back in the woods. It’s at least out of the way for now. I wish people wouldn’t litter – pack out your garbage. If something doesn’t burn fully, haul it out. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t scrap the burnt wire at least that was all over the campsite. Nobody wants to be tripping over wire or broken glass in the darkness.

Things are fairly dry up here ๐Ÿ‘ขbut there is a pretty deep and rocky mud hole on the driveway to the campsite โ›บ so I don’t want to drive through it unnecessarily to visit Little Falls today and I’m kind of annoyed about what happened yesterday driving up here. I just don’t want to hit one of those big rocks and bend or break a suspension component. Instead I’ll probably hike back to Hildervaldnt Vly from camp and enjoy the beautiful day in the wilderness. The sun is already charging the battery ๐Ÿ”‹ and I expect a good charge with all of the sun.

After I started setting up, somebody took the campsite just down the road, started a big fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ then packed up and left. Odd. That’s one of the reasons I’ve never camped down here as there isn’t a lot of space between the campsites – the nearest one is about 250 ft away. Not the mile plus of many of the Pisceo Powley sites. But quiet up here today, I can certainly listen to my music later on without bothering folks.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 57 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 13th. Northwest wind around 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1911. .5 inches of snow fell back in 1907.โ„

The sun will set at 8:11 pm with dusk around 8:44 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 15 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 18th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2018, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 48 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:19 pm with dusk at 8:52 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 73 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 2017.

I should probably finish securing camp and head out on the trail. The hammock, sun and breeze are nice although I did just see my first black fly ๐Ÿœ of the year…..

May 5, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 56 degrees ๐ŸŒ‰. There is a east-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 11 am. Not a terrible evening but I decided against sitting out back after my evening walk. Should be a great evening for sleeping. ๐Ÿ’ค

Sipping on some nice cold drink of water with a hint of that cider vinegar. ๐Ÿ I’m so glad I quit drinking alcohol. ๐Ÿป Budwiser is so tasty now that it’s a rare treat in the wilderness. Water is so much healthier and has zero calories. And cheaper. Maybe the slight acidity is bad for the teeth but I can’t imagine it’s any worse than soda. I do get regular check ups at the dentist and I still drink a lot of milk ๐Ÿฎ although not as much as I once did as milk is kind of expensive and a lot of calories.

All and all it was a pretty sucky weekend weather wise, ๐Ÿ’ฆ but except for running to the store I pretty much stayed home. I did get groceries so I’m not totally out of food like yesterday when I was stuck eating cream of chicken soup ๐Ÿ” dunked with stale bread. Hey, it had to be used up and I was in a cranky mood yesterday so I wasn’t going to go shopping. I figured sticking around home saves money. As does using up what is at home before buying more.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain before 10pm, then a slight chance of showers between 10pm and 1am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 6am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 21st. East wind around 6 mph becoming north after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon ๐ŸŒ’ with 5% illuminated. The First Quarter Moon is on Friday night with mostly cloudy skies expected. The Flower Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Friday, May 17th. The sun will rise at 5:43 am with the first light at 5:12 am, which is one minute and 17 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 9 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 22 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 5pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 20th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 4pm. North wind 3 to 5 mph. Should be a nice day. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.โ„

Tomorrow is another work day but with my south facing office ๐Ÿข the sun will be nice โ˜€. I love the views of the Heldebergs and Catskills from my office and with all the greenery from the spider plants ๐ŸŒพ its always nice. I’ll definitely walk outside to the Capitol.

Over the weekend I worked on some improvements to the blog that make it easier for me to locate old content for refeaturing and updating. After all these years of blogging it becomes hard to constant think up new things. ๐Ÿ’ญ

I won the eBay auction for the hand drill ๐Ÿ”ฉ I plan to use for drilling holes in quarter inch luan plywood for building LED signs. Minimum bid $8, even with shipping I think I got a fair deal – certainly cheaper than buying new and much higher quality rool. I am thinking my first project will be a USA red white and blue sign for use at camp.๐Ÿ’ก I’ll probably just run it at five volts USB power with everything in parallel. If I drive the LEDs at 15 mA I can run 30 in parallel and draw about 1/2 amp at 5 VDC or 2.5 watts.

I also ordered two more HC-05 Bluetooth modules and a USB to serial adapter ๐Ÿ”Œ from China to replace the one I burnt up this weekend. Still haven’t paired the two together I have but I’ll figure it out eventually. I also played with the waterproof temperature sensor a bit today. I got to get it now working with the esp32 that drives my VMS display and run the wires outside so I can measure the outside temperature. โ„

I started thinking more about what life would be like without an automobile ๐Ÿš˜ this weekend. I’ve thought a lot about the savings but less about the costs – ride sharing fares, more bus fares, car rentals, laundromat, paid trash pickup vs hauling my own, and even having to either order online or buy from Hannaford rather than buy cheaper at Walmart. The big savings seem less than at first. Well I guess the same thing is true when I study car insurance ๐Ÿš™ options – big savings don’t materialize by shopping around if you want to maintain decent coverage. The way you save big bucks is by dropping the amount of coverage you have which increases your risk especially in case of severe accident. Being that I don’t own a house nor have my money tied up in property it’s less safe from liability lawsuits so I want to have decent coverage. ๐Ÿ’ต Plus I think it would mean a lot less nights in the wilderness.

Right now, next weekend looks pretty nice. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 64. Maximum dew point of 46 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 44 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

If the weekend forecast remains true, ๐Ÿ‘ I’m still thinking about Piseco Powley Road and then Little Falls on Saturday. โ›บ Things could change before the though. I know that the gates are closed north of the Potholers but the lower part of the road will be open and hopefully won’t be too soft. Or I could consider other alternatives.

In four weeks on June 2 the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 27 minutes and 14 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 78 and 60 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 74 and 53 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1895.

Looking ahead, Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€ is in 1 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is a month away, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 6 weeks, Dog Days of Summer ๐ŸŒป is in 2 months, National Nude Day ๐Ÿ‘ฑ is in 10 weeks, Sunset Before 7:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 17 weeks, Autumn ๐Ÿ‚ is in 20 weeks and Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 23 weeks.
