July in October ๐Ÿ–

Seems like it’s going to be a rather nice day. I’m glad I decided to take most of it off, though I do have a 3 pm meeting but it’s a Zoom Meeting so I can do it remotely from the trail side. Maybe a day or two from now the high pressure will break down and it will be much cooler and rainy for Columbus Day Weekend.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Fog ๐ŸŒซ and 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees.

Definitely a foggy ๐ŸŒ morning but it should be a nice day. Maybe a tad bit humid by afternoon. Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ after getting up at five o’clock and doing minimal cooking ๐Ÿณmy standards lately – eggs with all the vegetables and spices. Putting some ginger and cinnamon in the coffee โ˜• really spiced things up. Then I’ll shower ๐Ÿšฟ and head out on the trail.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 83 degrees at 3pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 5pm. Muggy enough to almost feel like summer. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 56 degrees. We will likely tie the record high of 83 set in 1967. There was a dusting of snow in 1974.โ„

I’ve decided to have an O-K day today. ๐Ÿšฒ Spending my day in Kinderhook, going to ride the Albany Hudson Electric Trail, visit the grounds of Martin Van Buren Historical Site, get apples and stuff at Golden Harvest Farms and who knows what else. Maybe explore the Charles Flood WMA first thing on the Hudson River or the Oom Preserve later on. At 3 pm to 4 pm I have a work zoom meeting and then I need to run to Colonie Planning Board for a scoping hearing about the proposed solar farm in the Pine Bush. Figure start in Stuyvesant Falls and ride north so the trip back is mostly down hill. Lots of options is how I look at it for a nice day.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:45 pm with sun having an altitude of 43.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-27.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:58 pm with the sun in the west (259ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (266ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:35 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:02 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:36 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 77 degrees. The dew point will be 64 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 39 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 56 degrees at 6am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 8th. Maximum dew point of 64 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. In 2022, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 47 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1948.

Much cooler and rainy to start out the Columbus Day Weekend. โ›ต๐Ÿ‚ Saturday, showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 66. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 65 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ when the sun will be setting at 5:51 pm with dusk at 6:19 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 64 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 56 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 2019.

 Pop

Well that pizza crust reminded me of inexpensive Walmart whole wheat sandwich bread that was a bit soggy ๐Ÿ•

Well it was an experiment but probably rushing it, making it undercooked with the wetness from the thawed 3/4 lb of frozen spinach and pulverized tomatoes left it soggy. I’m not saying it was bad as I eat all up but needs refinement. On that note…

Good morning! Clouds after the rain storm and 68 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Some good bolts of lightening as I cooked breakfast with rain but then it stopped.  โ›ˆ The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear around 11 am. Probably within a few hours I’ll need to drop the shades in my office so I can see my monitor. I don’t mind the sunlight, especially on a cooler day today.

I ended up deciding to ride to work after realizing I was too late to catch the early express downtown ๐Ÿšต, as it wasn’t too wet this morning, after the storm pulled away and the radar showed all clear. But if we get rain this evening or it’s too hot, I can always throw Blackie back on bus and take it home — but it’s rather ride, burn the 500 calories and save my buck thirty. ๐ŸšŒ I figure in most cases when it’s nicer out, it’s best to take Blackie at least one way, as before you know it there will be snow on the ground, I’ll have to dress up for work, or actually have a good excuse for not riding in. That said, I’m kind of looking forward to moving over to the new office in North Albany, as Erie Boulevard is a much easier, flatter ride then the Madison Street hill, past Hill Cafe. Plus none of the serious traffic like on Madison Avenue. Won’t get rid of the Normans Kill Gorge climb in the evening commute, but that’s part of the calorie burning exercise.

Got my 36 inch jeans on ๐Ÿ‘– and they fit pretty darn nicely. I almost could have gotten 34s, but these will do for now, as who knows where things will be in a few months. With some of those nicely-fitting shirts I got from the Salvation Army, I look pretty sharp compared to the baggie jeans and oversized t-shirts I often wear, though I’m getting more fitting clothes, but most of that currently is just shorts and hand-me-down t-shirts from dad. ๐Ÿ‘• I think now that I have better fitting clothes, it won’t look like I’ve lost an excessive amount of weight, and that will hush up the critics. Now the key is just keeping off the pounds, though I think I’ve learned enough about food and nutrition in recent months that I’m unlikely to go back to my old ways. Yet, it will be harder to ride to work when the snow flies โ„๏ธ as eventually the rail trail will be impassible due to snow. Plus when I move to the Erie Boulevard office, I won’t have the 18 flights of stairs to climb or that hard climb up the Madison Street, not that I’ll necessarily miss the later especially with the traffic.

Today will have showers and thunderstorms before 11am, then a slight chance of showers between 11am and 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 77 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 68 at 9am. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind 5 to 13 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It was very sticky. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1953.

I think yesterday’s pizza would have been better, ๐Ÿ• had I baked the crust even further — more then 8 or 10 minutes before adding the spinach and sauce, and maybe boiled down the pulverized tomatoes ๐Ÿ… before applying them as sauce. I didn’t think the crust was a garlicly as I had hoped, and maybe I could have added more olive oil to the mix, though I didn’t want lard it up with too much saturated fat or calories. The loads of spinach were good, and the cottage cheese added flavor, and it was good to use up many of the tomatoes I had where starting to get soft and in some cases moldy in part of them. I think next time I’ll try preparing in advance with the addition of yeast, ๐Ÿž maybe a little of Stevia for sweetness and maybe less oil. And make sure the crust is fully baked before adding toppings, and as then boil down the sauce in advance to make it thicker. Definitely felt full after this meal though, and I went for a five mile bike ride ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ after eating, around the Nature Trail in the park, ๐Ÿธ then down Glenmont Road to the other part of Elm Avenue and back home before it was completely dark out at eight. ๐ŸŒƒ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 56.4° from the due south horizon (-14.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:58 pm with the sun in the west (277°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (283°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:36 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 41 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Full ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (110°) at an altitude of 3° from the horizon, 226,455 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:40 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŽ‘ , with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 3rd. Maximum dew point of 61 at 6pm. Going to sweat this evening on the bike ride home, especially with long-sleeved shirt and jeans but I’ll take my time. ๐Ÿšฒ Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1965.

I put some red lentils to soak in the refrigerator today, ๐Ÿ› this evening I will drain, and try running them through the food processor again with some sea salt, for a second attempt at making red lentil wraps. I have generally avoided wraps as I think they’re extra calories and carbs for no reason, but I could see different things I could make up with them too. Somehow I don’t have turmeric in my pantry despite shopping at Farmer’s India Market on Saturday, but I should get some so I can make dhal up as it’s an healthy option. I need eggs, ๐Ÿฅš I could get them with the Turmeric this afternoon commute, though I’m a bit hesitant to buy eggs and then ride home with the bumps, ๐Ÿฃ as often it’s a bit rougher riding in the basket then in an an automobile. Plus if I wait until Friday I can get farm-fresh eggs at Samdil Farm, which I was surprised are only selling for $3 a dozen, probably because they mill their own chicken feed from farm-grown grain that is primarily for their dairy operation. ๐Ÿ“ But then again, I don’t really need any more food, my refrigerator is full and I don’t want things to start going bad. Maybe next week when I back from camp I can try dhal.

Tonight I’m going to start packing for the Labor Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ• There is only so much I can do this soon but the more I have ready, the less to do tomorrow, and then I can get to bed early ๐Ÿ›Œ and be up and on the road before seven come Friday. Then to Samdil Farm early, which is a bit out of the way but worth it, Johnstown Walmart for any other miscellaneous supplies and hopefully to that campsite I want by nine. ๐ŸŽช

Then when I get up to camp, by mine, the plan is clear: ๐ŸŽช Set up the tent, then chill, as I have day off and I’m not remote working. ๐Ÿšฒ Spend the afternoon riding dirt and gravel, see how many bears ๐Ÿป and wildlife I can see along the way. Cook up some shrimp, squash and other goodies, eat sweet corn. ๐Ÿฆ ๐ŸŒฝ Hammock time, and kayak and swim time, especially come Labor Day. No need to rush home on Labor Day, as I’m not visiting my parents this weekend though I want to be home by 8 PM so I’m not driving home in the dark. But that leaves a lot of day to poke around and have fun in the greater Speculator-area.

A picture perfect Labor Day Weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Friday, sunny, with a high near 77. Light north wind. Max dew point of 53. Very nice. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 60 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 85. Maximum dew point of 66 at 4pm. Monday, sunny and 89 degrees with a maximum dew point of 69 at 4 pm. A bit sticky for sure. Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. ๐Ÿ‚ That said, it won’t be long before we start seeing a lot of color up north. Not sure, I could be back up there in three or four weeks to take in autumn’s colors.

On this day in 1967, Thurgood Marshall is confirmed as the first African American Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. โš– Had to have been quite the step forward in the country at the time, but now seems so long ago, with Justice Clarence Thomas long ago now replacing him. And in 1974, a powerful bomb explodes at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries headquarters in Marunouchi, Tokyo, Japan. ๐Ÿ’ฃ Eight are killed, 378 are injured. Eight left-wing activists are arrested on May 19, 1975 by Japanese authorities. Usually it’s right wingers these days blowing up shit. But who knows if Trump is reelected not that I think it’s likely to happen at this point.

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 6:46 pm with dusk at 7:12 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 68 and 50 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 2017.

Pond

This morning is a drag ๐Ÿฒ

Puff the magic dragon by lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. It’s cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. Fog around, and it’s in my head this morning and I’m not stoned but maybe I wish I was as I stumble around this morning skipping my morning walk.

So I can get at least some steps in ๐Ÿ‘ฃ taking the long way around the High School ๐Ÿšธ superblock to the express bus ๐Ÿš as I have enough time. Breakfast was a bowl of light red kidney beans with sugar free maple syrup and a little bit of Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. I have a bit of sore throat this morning and maybe that’s my excuse for my dragging ass, though truth be told it’s the gray skies my struggle to recover from summer vacation. ๐Ÿ› I was in bed shortly after 9 pm and slept well but had to run to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ a few times during the night as I had a bunch of lemonade ๐Ÿ‹ after my evening bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride to Voorheesville.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 78 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Lighyg south wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

If the weather was going to be better today โ›ˆ I would definitely be riding into work. ๐Ÿšฒ It was a nice bicycle commute yesterday, although my ride home was a bit heavy with all that sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ, zucchini, cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’ and that watermelon ๐Ÿ‰ I had loaded into the back of my bike. Howard Street does get a bit crazy ๐Ÿš˜ at 5 o’clock but once I hit the bike path under 787 and do the climb out of the valley it’s a bit of serenity. Tomorrow I’ll ride down to the dentist ๐Ÿฆท and then to work.

Yesterday I rode close to 30 miles or maybe more. ๐Ÿšฒ Not sure though I did GPS log it. Sunset is getting earlier ๐ŸŒ‡ and I was running late ๐Ÿƒ after dinner but it was still a great ride. That said my mountain bike is so slow compared to the road bikes and it’s boring ๐Ÿ’ค to ride on asphalt but take it to the places I like to camp โ›บ it’s wonderful and it beats walking ๐Ÿšถ around town. It just annoys me as road bikes fly by on the bike path, and general boredom of the bike path, but I remember it’s a compromise compared to the great places I can get up in the wilderness. I am thinking the gravel/stone dust of Pennsylvania’s Pine Creek Gorge might be fun this autumn.

I’ve been kicking myself for not stopping in Triangle on my way home from the Finger Lakes to get more zucchini and have been desperate ever since. ๐Ÿฅ’ The zucchini I had in the Finger Lakes was so good that all I’ve been dreaming of all week is more zucchini. Fried with onions, some MSG, some pepper and a bit of stevia and olive oil it was so good. Eat way too much but there are worse foods to over indulge in. Sweet corn also for dinner and a plum for dessert. ๐ŸŒฝ This morning as I mentioned it was red kidney beans and syrup, and lunch is going to be onions, rice with peas and lentils and then some edamame thrown in. Haven’t had edamame in a few weeks, and it’s good, mostly because of vacation.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 63° from the due south horizon (-7.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:27 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:06 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:35 pm, which is one minute and 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:15 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind around 8 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Another summer weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ– Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

This weekend I’m thinking of either riding or driving out to Our Families Harvest farm stand ๐ŸŒฝ in New Scotland to stock up on produce then maybe some mountain biking / trail riding in the Albany Pine Bush ๐Ÿฆ‹, I think that could be a lot of fun. Do it early as I see thunderstorms โ›ˆ๏ธ and rain popping up by afternoon. Then maybe go to see John and get some groceries at the Walmart in Albany. I specifically like those little pearl onions they have, I haven’t seen them at other grocery stores. They’re like candy and you can eat them raw after you peal the outer skin or toss them in a frying ๐Ÿณ pan and they quickly get brown and extra sweet. Maybe head a bit further north in Colonie and do some of the Canalway trail but I doubt it. Quiet day Sunday, maybe Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and go out and see the folks. ๐Ÿ‘ช

I asked the secretary ๐Ÿ—“ to schedule no meetings for me on Thursday and Friday of next week, lest I want to head up to the Potholers for a long weekend and to ride Piseco-Powley Road on Blackie ๐Ÿšต and camp at House Pond Campsite โ›บ assuming it’s open. I could go for a nice few days at the swimming ๐ŸŠ hole there maybe with some clams again ๐Ÿฆช and tons of fresh farm produce ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿฅ’ ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿง… to toss in the beer and clam broth. We’ll see, it depends on the weather. I could use some time floating on the tube โญ• and cooling in the Potholers before summer is done. I can’t do the following week as the other director is off. Right now the second half of next week looks good, and we might finally get some warmer and drier weather. One last stand before summer is done. I’m also thinking of seeing if I can work remote or take a personal day that Friday before Labor Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ so I can get camp set up early on Friday, then work or have fun as time would allow.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:16 pm with dusk at 7:43 pm. It will mean darker mornings especially for walking ๐Ÿšถ although I should be able to walk for a few more weeks after then at 6:15 as dawn is about a half hour earlier and I do that most of the winter at any rate. The cooler air will be refreshing and help wake me up when those days come.

South in Gorge

June 1, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Suddenly it’s June ๐Ÿฎ ! Dairy month with all those cows eating delicious first cut hay and corn silage popping up out of ground, ๐ŸŒฑ Gay Pride month so hang your flag, ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ and Black Lives Matter month. โœŠ๐Ÿพ Next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset. ๐ŸŒ‡ Mostly cloudy and 59 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. A bit gray this morning, but it’s expected skies will clear around noontime.

I can’t believe that the we are starting out this morning so cloudy โ˜๏ธ, but I’m hopeful that we will see more sun โ˜€ later. At least it’s a nice enough of a morning for the walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. My laptop is fully charged so I can work out back later on when it’s gets nicer. Might as well work outside today as tomorrow and Thursday it’s back in the office ๐Ÿข. I don’t mind but I like the sunshine when I can get it.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 49 at 11am. Calm wind becoming southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 68 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1918.

Today I will work from home after my morning walk. I need to get groceries, ๐Ÿ‘œ contact solution, ๐Ÿ‘€ and some other supplies at lunch time so I want to head to Walmart today. I probably should get groceries for the weekend, although maybe I can get out on Thursday night after work. I will probably start packing for the weekend, ๐Ÿ’ผ as I might have to work late on Thursday night or end up over in the archives continuing to sort, pack and dry John Wolcott’s files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I plan to leave early Friday morning at this point to work remote from Lake Pleasant and camp up that way over the weekend. ๐Ÿ– Going to be a hot weekend and even hotter next week. While I could probably work remote on next Tuesday, I probably will come back Monday night after work so I have time to prepare for next week in office and Wednesday and Thursday and work from home on the following Tuesday.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.5ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.3ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:45 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (295ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (302ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:27 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 9:00 pm, which is 47 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:45 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 66 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 16 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 50 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. Light southwest wind. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 45 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1971.

Today I expect my Bluetooth speaker ๐Ÿ”Š to arrive in the mail โœ‰. The old one I’ve had for six years now stopped charging ๐Ÿ”‹ and the battery life wasn’t great. I thought about trying to take it apart for parts or repair ๐Ÿ›  but opening the waterproof case will be a rather destructive process I fear and the result wouldn’t be great in a wet and muddy camp environment. I kind of think it would be fun to shoot ๐Ÿ”ซ it and then burn it but that rubber would stink to high heaven and I couldn’t salvage parts. I hope I got a good quality model, I researched it over a couple of days but I don’t know. Always hard to know which on line reviews are legit. As long as it’s loud enough to be heard over woods and road noise and the battery life is reasonable I’m good.

Going to be a nice, hot summer weekend. ๐ŸŠ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 86. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 7pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 89. Maximum dew point of 66 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 77 degrees. Yeah, that’s going to be a toasty one especially back in Albany. With that heat I’ll definitely want the screen tent not just to keep cool but control the bugs. Thinking of doing some swimming in Speculator and maybe some fishing. ๐ŸŽฃ I thought about going to the Green Mountains but I like being closer to WI-FI should something come up, and I prefer to do my Friday meeting using the laptop rather then the phone, especially when I’m away from home with the virtual background.

As previously noted, next Tuesday is 8:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:31 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. On that day in 2020, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 81 and 49 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2011. It is quite possible we break that record this year, it seems like the dog days of summer will be coming early this year.

 Bourne And Grout Pond

May 7, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ ! Days are definitely getting longer, with lots of daylight in evening after work. Three weeks to Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ . I can’t believe that’s so close. It won’t be like last year for sure. Mostly sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind.

A nice spring morning. ๐ŸŒธ I’m thinking it won’t be long before it’s real hot out. 70 degrees days are quite rare in the Albany area. Usually it’s cool in the 60s in May until it’s in the 80s and 90s. The official 70 degree days in range are usually just due to averages, not actual conditions on the ground. It just turns out we rarely have truly average weather, it’s more a combination of the extremes. That said, with the current weather pattern, I’d say it’s going to be quite a bit on cool side of things for a while.

The express bus stop remains empty this morning, ๐Ÿš but it looks like it’s ready whenever service returns. I can’t imagine it will be long, the New York City Subways are restoring full service in the next few weeks, and it seems like they are bringing back more state employees every day. ๐ŸšŒ I am going to be working downtown more over the next few weeks, and maybe it will be transitioning back to a more normal way of doing things. But it will be a pain until they fully restore rush hour service and end capacity limits on the elevators ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ‍๐Ÿ‘ฆ during the evening rush. Maybe I can take the stairs. ๐Ÿง—‍โ™‚๏ธ Honestly, I kind of liked remote work and doing things from the Spectulator library, ๐Ÿ’ป while camping in back country, but I guess things have change, although I think it’s silly as the way we’ve done things over the past year works okay.

Been thinking about what the best way to do weather average for the blog. ๐ŸŒฉ Do you use the 15-year climate averages or the more typical 30-year climate averages? Good question! I feel like the 15-year averages from 2006-2020 might be too based on decadal trends that are particularly unusual and it’s possible that the 2020s will be cooler, although with climate change I have my doubts. โ„๏ธ Most meteorologists use the 1991-2020 averages, which I might end up using just for consistency sake. Plus this allows me to celebrate at least in my head on what a nice warm day it is, even if it’s not really the case. Even with the longer averages, there is no more time periods at least in Albany where the average high temperature is no longer below freezing. So weeks of icy roads and sidewalks seem increasingly unlikely, a thing I’ve noticed in recent years. Climate is getting warmer.

Today will have patchy frost before 8am. Otherwise, increasing clouds ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. 6 degrees below normal, which feels like April 25th. May hasn’t quite arrived yet in the view of Mr. Weather. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1930. 0.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 64.3° from the due south horizon (-6.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:23 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (288°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:03 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 8:33 pm, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:13 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 55 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 20 seconds over yesterday.

I want to get to store and get groceries and supplies some time this morning. ๐Ÿช I have a meeting at 1 PM, and I like to go out during my lunch time, but I might take it a bit early to get it done. Last night, I put some baking soda on the carpet where I think I noticed the smell yesterday, and left the windows open last night, vacuuming things up this morning, and now it doesn’t have that pungent smell I noticed last night. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ I still want to get some air freshers and additional cleaning supplies too. While I don’t know when my landlord is coming over for repairs, I figure I’ve done my due diligence by notifying him of problems I’ve notice and it’s good to get things cleaner. ๐Ÿงน Often I delay cleaning, but it’s nice not having dust and dirt everywhere.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. 6 degrees below normal, which is similar to April 25th. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2020, we had light rain in the evening, which ended and it became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of 26 occurred back in 1968.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 56 degrees at 4pm. 13.9 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1936. There was a dusting of snow in 1977.โ„ If it’s not too wet, maybe that’s a good day to walk out to Five Rivers with the binoculars and observe spring birds, like I do nearly every weekend these days when I’m in town. ๐Ÿฆ

Looking ahead to Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 62. ๐Ÿ˜Ž West wind 7 to 10 mph. Maximum dew point of 39 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 69 degrees. Sunday seems like the best day of the weekend, I am probably going to go hiking somewhere in the Heldebergs. Maybe Thacher Park, although I kind of prefer to go some where a little more wild with fewer people. Maybe Rensselearville State Forest, after noon when the spring turkey hunters are done. ๐Ÿฆƒ

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Memorial Day Weekend Starts ๐Ÿ•๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:23 pm with dusk at 8:57 pm. On that day in 2020, we had hot and humid weather with temperatures between 83 and 68 degrees. I remember that well from working up in Spectulator and camping near Mason Lake. Busy, working weekend holiday, but at least I was up north. Typically, the high temperature is 75 degrees. We hit a record high of 93 back in 2016.

Not sure what my Memorial Day Weekend will be like this year, ๐Ÿœ but I know that the black flies wait in waiting. Maybe I should plan somewhere are fewer black flies. I could do wilderness camping this year, and avoid crowds at one of state forests outside of mountains. Or I could go up to Vermont or the Adirondacks and swat the black flies. Not sure which days I will be in the office and which days will be remote, so that might depend where I have to go and how god my cell service must be. ๐Ÿ“ฑ If I am planning to work remote, I’ll have to be somewhat near a WI-FI signal as I am reducing my plan to correlate with spending more time in the office, and because I don’t need it as much with things re-opening. I wonder how long before the library is fully re-opened for work inside? ๐Ÿ“š

May 6, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Partly cloudy and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 22 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. The breeze definitely makes things feel cooler than reality. Still a nice spring day. ๐ŸŒธ While still a month away, looking forward to seeing the daisies ๐ŸŒผ come out. Birds are definitely chirping today. ๐Ÿฆ The grass blowing in the wind ๐ŸŒพ at the farm down the way is pretty with the deep blue skies.

I’ve been getting to bed early ๐Ÿ› and an earlier start, as it won’t be long before I am going downtown more regularly ๐Ÿข. I also am not sure when the landlord is coming over to make repairs so I wanted to take a shower ๐Ÿšฟ and be ready to go downtown for work if he starts making a lot of noise. ๐Ÿšฝ I’ve worked from home when he’s been over making repairs but it’s a terrible distraction. ๐Ÿ”Š Even if he doesn’t come over today and I end up just feeling clean that’s fine. ๐Ÿ›€ Keeping things good and clean is good.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 5pm. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Northwest wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 32 mph. That breeze despite the sun will keep things feeling cool. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1930. There was a dusting of snow in 1994.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 64° from the due south horizon (-6.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:22 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (287°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (294°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:02 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 10 seconds with dusk around 8:32 pm, which is one minute and 7 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:12 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 22 seconds over yesterday.

Still trying to figure out what they smell is downstairs. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป Airing things out helped. Maybe a dead mouse ๐Ÿญ although I’m leaning towards mold under the carpet when I was scrubbing it earlier in the week. I guess it’s an excuse to do more cleaning. I plugged in an air freshener downstairs and I’m continuing to search around. Windows are all open which I think is helping. I may make a trip to the store later to get more air fresheners and cleaning supplies. ๐Ÿšฝ Maybe some is the noxious ammonia cleaner I’ve been using later, or that bathroom mat that looks like it has some urine on it. Not sure, I got to get better at aiming for the toilet when I pee. Yet, another benefit to being out in the woods.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 38 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 18th. Going to be a chilly night to keep the windows open ๐Ÿ”ณ. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1874.

Weekend looks increasingly cloudy and stormy and cold. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 56. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Maximum dew point of 38 at 8am. Typical average high for the weekend is 67 degrees. I will probably just walk out to Five Rivers on Saturday and then do some kind of hike Sunday.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Strawberry Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid, partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 80 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

April 2, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Today is Good Friday โœ๏ธ ! Originally supposed to be a work holiday, it was somewhat translated into a working holiday. That said, it doesn’t look like that nice of day to head up to the Adirondacks as at least today is going to be rather cloudy and gray. But at least, next Friday is 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Cloudy, gray around 26 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ„ There is a northwest breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The current wind chill is 12. There are 0.2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธIt is a cold morning for April. I turned the heat on last night, although I’m going to turn it off during day time, only using my little space heater if I get cold. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I got the bank yesterday and deposited my stimulus check and withdrew some cash ๐Ÿง so I have it on hand, until issues with the other bank account get straightened out. Then I went to the store and got some groceries — not a lot but a handful and also picked up lighter fluid in case I decided to camping. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Especially if there is a lot of wet wood or goodies to burn, having lighter fluid is handy. Driving home, I hit a terrible slippery batch of sleet on the road. ๐Ÿš˜ ๐ŸŒจ Maybe I’m an inexperienced winter driver, but after moving along at 55 MPH on wet — and not terribly wet roads and suddenly hitting an icy patch, I was slipping all over the place with the traction control bitting in hard. Elm Avenue for a while was super icy, but I made it home carefully, but I found myself using 4×4.

Today will be occasional flurries before 8am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 25th. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 77 was set in 2010. 8 inches of snow fell back in 1924.โ„ Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 52.4° from the due south horizon (-18.4° vs. 6/21).

I want to call the shop today if they are open about getting an oil change next week. ๐Ÿ”ง It’s been a while since I’ve done one, and I’ve put on probably upwards of 5,000 or 6,000 miles and even with the synthetic oil it’s worthwhile to do. Plus I loose oil with that oil coolant line leak, so I’m adding oil from time to time, so they probably contributes to sludge in the engine. I used to do my own oil changes, I might again someday do them, but it’s such a pain to get that dang filter off and by the time you figure in all your time tracking down motor oil and filter, it’s just easier to drop off at the shop and have it back in 15 minutes. With the synthetic oil, your not changing it all of the time too. And while maybe I’ve burned used oil before, it’s kind of noxious smelling. ๐Ÿ‘ƒ That and I saw a 4 AM advertisement, which reinforced my mind that I should get it done. ๐Ÿ“บ Now advertisers, cue up your ads about your specials after I make my appointment.

A six foot person will cast a 4.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:46 pm with the sun in the west (272°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (278°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:23 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 55 seconds with dusk around 7:51 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:25 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. We will have 12 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 20 degrees at 4am. 13 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 28th. Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. Definitely not a nice night for sitting out back. It would have been even colder up north. In 2020, we had light rain. It got down to 42 degrees. The record low of 16 occurred back in 1954.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 51 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 31st. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 79 was set in 1981. 11 inches of snow fell back in 1891.โ„

I haven’t decided if I will just walk out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ tomorrow or what my plans will be. I have options but I’m not inclined to stray far from home, especially when I get just walk somewhere and observe nature. Easter Sunday before I go out to the folks house I might go up Bennett Hill or another trail around not too far from home. I think I may very well want to where my muck boots wherever I go. ๐Ÿ‘ข

Looking ahead to Easter Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 52. ๐Ÿฐ Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Typical average high for the weekend is 53 degrees. So at least sunny but kind of cool for this time of year. I think I can wait a week or two to go to the Adirondacks. Still a while before black fly season — figure that’s off until the first week of May.

As previously noted, next Friday is 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ with dusk at 7:59 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1991.
