What can I say, eighteen floors is a lot to walk up to ๐Ÿšถ

Truth is I’m not that scared to ride the sketchy elevators but doing the 18 flights in the morning and lunch time is excellent cardio on top of the 7 ยฝ miles in trying to walk every day. I didn’t even know the stairs were an option but ID badge works with them so I guess I’m an authorized employee to use them.

Good morning! What day is it? Hump Day, of course. Cloudy and 64 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 64 degrees. The skies will clear around 4 pm. Or will they? It depends on thunderstorms and wildfire smoke. Currently the AQI is a healthy 22.

I’ve decided to wear my glasses ๐Ÿ‘“ during the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ to give my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ a break and save time in the morning. Did 8 ยฝ miles yesterday plus the stairs as I went for a walk in the Pine Bush ๐Ÿฆ‹ after the meeting of the Guilderland IDA where they are giving an even bigger tax break to Costco.

Today will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 9am. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 76 degrees at 5pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 4th. Maximum dew point of 68 at 11am. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1901.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.7ยฐ from the due south horizon (-0.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:55 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:38 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 28 seconds with dusk around 9:12 pm, which is earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (185ยฐ) at an altitude of 31ยฐ from the horizon, 240,019 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:58 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 62 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 25 seconds over yesterday.

On this day in 1896, An explosion in the Newton Coal Company’s Twin Shaft Mine in Pittston, Pennsylvania results in a massive cave-in that kills 58 miners. Also in 1969, Stonewall riots begin in New York City, marking the start of the Gay Rights Movement. Lots of explosive things hpapening on this day in history.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 82. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 12pm. Sunday, a chance of showers, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Maximum dew point of 69 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

I’ve come to the realization that Independence Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ doesn’t look like a winner so probably best to stay close to home. ๐Ÿก Saves money, avoids the crowds. But maybe the following weekend will be better, it looks like it’s getting hotter and hopefully less rainy come those days. I wouldn’t mind the following week to go up to the Potholers. Maybe this weekend I can commit to buying a bicycle ๐Ÿšฒ, I might end up getting a new one if I get tired of waiting for the perfect ๐Ÿ‘Œ used one to show up. I get paid next week and I expect that I would get a lot of use out of it. Thinking the last week of July for summer vacation in the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐Ÿ–

Looking ahead, next Wednesday is Hottest Time of the Year ๐Ÿ˜… when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:10 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain showers, humid, partly cloudy and temperatures between 74 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1919.

Your Flag Decal Won’t Get You Into Heaven Anymore ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

Seems like the most appropriate John Prine song for this Flag Day 2023. I was going to post it Memorial Day being the irreverent SOB that I am but whatever. Loving America is also about criticizing it when our leaders are wrong. But what do I care, I’m leaving this town come tomorrow morning for the Adirondacks.

Good morning! What day is it? Flag Day, of course. ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ At least in the parts of America that still celebrates such things. You can taste the wood smoke, cow shit and heavy fog ๐ŸŒซ around 52 degrees in Delmar, NY. It’s kind of nice when you live enough on the outskirts of the city to have the smells of the country. ๐Ÿฎ Calm wind. The dew point is 51 degrees. The AQI is 43. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

Woke up at 5:30 this morning and had reheated egg quiche ๐Ÿฐ with coffee โ˜•. Went out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ and came back home and ran to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ and splattered shit all over the toilet and my boxers. They were fun to wash this morning. ๐Ÿ’ฉ I almost thought about tossing them as they don’t really fit anymore. In my rush to get out to the Bike Rescue ๐Ÿšฒ last night I decided to have the last chicken patty I had left in my freezer from before I decided to cut out processed unhealthy food from my diet. ๐Ÿ” I think it might have already gone bad or maybe I’m not used processed food, though I had it with plenty of beans, celery, onions and brown rice to supplement it. But it left me hungry and feeling sick ๐Ÿคฎ for the rest of the evening. It had a ton of salt in it and pretty high on fat too. My gut doesn’t like change, I had a similar situation when I first started eating a lot of oatmeal and fiber rich foods. I still don’t feel great but I think I’m past that now all cleaned up and showered. ๐Ÿ›€

Today will have a chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. Some of the storms could produce small hail and gusty winds. ๐ŸŒฆ High of 74 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 27th. Maximum dew point of 60 at 2pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ Light southeast wind becoming south 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 83 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1892.

I drove down to the Trinity Center last night in the South End ๐Ÿšฒ, hoping to get some advice on rebuilding the back wheel of my old bicycle.I was still hoping for some advice on the wheel, but when I got there, the door was locked on the Trinity Center and the lights were off. ๐Ÿšช I walked around back to see if I missed, then moved my truck a little closer, deciding to double check that nobody was there, ringing the door bell but nobody arrived. Maybe they didn’t have volunteers, that happens, they’ve been closed the past few weeks. ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ

It’s fine, I decided I’ll bring the rear wheel to the Adirondacks this weekend and play with it some more. I am starting to doubt though that I’ll ever get this bicycle back on the road, ๐Ÿšณ as I keep discovering new issues. The thing about it was when I was unloading my bicycle I noticed my front wheel is now out of true, among other issues. But I do want to learn how to replace spokes, and learn more about bicycles. ๐Ÿ“š I got two books out of the library about bicycle repair, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ง and I want to learn more about bicycles before I plunk down money for another used or rebuilt one. I think I will continue to cannibalize parts from this bicycle, and eventually donate it somewhere, but the mean time I can store in the crawl space. But next time I’ll call or email in advance โœ‰๏ธ before going down there.

It’s fine, I needed to get propane, some supplies from Walmart and fuel for my truck. โ›ฝ All much too expensive but I wanted to have everything I need for the trip, including an new air pump to inflate my tube or in case of emergency, a little bit of extra rubber cement to patch any leaks, some more kidney beans, olives, and a few other groceries. ๐Ÿช Going to get fresh veggies and fruit on my way up to camp, probably stop in Gloversville at Price Chopper to get those things. Often the quality is better then Walmart, and it will be hopefully more fresh shopping on Thursday. But more expensive. Everything has gotten so darn expensive these days. ๐Ÿ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6° from the due south horizon (-0.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:09 pm, which is 27 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:55 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 63 degrees. The dew point will be 58 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm before 10pm, then a chance of showers. Some of the storms could produce small hail. ๐ŸŒง Low of 56 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 8th. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ South wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 42 occurred back in 1985.

Heading out of town for a Long Weekend starting on Thursday morning. ๐Ÿ• I was going to take off Friday and Tuesday, but it looks like the legislature will be back on Tuesday, so I best be back on Juneteenth. Plus Thursday looks like one of the best weather days of the long weekend. Friday looks cold and wet. I am going to bring my propane heater, along with the tarp for sure. It will be nice to be away from it all for some time. My radio doesn’t work, so I will be fully off-grid without cell service. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Hoping for some sun for swimming and to keep hte solar working well so my batteries are good.

Kind of a mixed bag but cool for the long weekend. ๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Thursday, sunny and 78. Friday, best chance of showers on and off all day, high 72. Saturday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 71. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Maximum dew point of 59 at 11am. Sunday, a chance of showers after 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Juneteenth, mostly sunny with showers late. High near 78. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

As Looking ahead, next Wednesday is Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938. That means the Mine Kill Pool should be open then ๐ŸŠ so if it’s nice that’s a lot of fun. But next weekend is a way off and I want to look at bicycles that weekend first before deciding if I want to go swimming. But also it would be great to get some fresh produce at the farm stands in the Schoharie Valley, do some camping and adventures not so far from home.

Memorial Day 2023

I guess it’s official that the unofficial start of summer has begun. That said, my summer really doesn’t kick off until legislative session is done though I expect next weekend not to be super busy so I will be able to get out of town. I’m just looking forward to a long quiet weekend totally off-grid with no work concerns to think about or address.

Good morning! Talk about a beautiful Memorial Day. Sunny and 68 degrees at the Cole Hill State Forest. ๐ŸŒž There is a east breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 47 degrees.

I have to say it’s been nice hammock camping up at Cole Hill State Forest. โ›บ Only sixteen miles, two traffic lights and speed zones, 22 minutes to home. Sure beats fighting traffic on NY 30 to get home and unpacked. Very few black flies, a nice breeze and good meals ๐Ÿด cooked over the campfire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I liked the simplicity of it all and the taste of the meals. Since I’ve gotten into healthy eating, the quality of food has improved enormously and I don’t mind the lack of hang overs at all.

Memorial Day will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 3pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. Maximum dew point of 48 at 11am. East wind around 7 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1931.

Not rushing to take down camp ๐ŸŽ’ that said I don’t have that much gear to take down. I do want to have time to go for a stroll around the forest before heading home, unpacking and showering ๐Ÿšฟ before seeing my folks for Memorial Day. In the evening I might do a quick hike up Bennett Hill before heading home for the night. ๐ŸŒƒ Then three session days this week, with only one likely late night on Wednesday and obviously the work picnic at six tomorrow. ๐Ÿงบ I also have my doctors appointment for my yearly physical in the morning at 8:30 on the morning, I plan to leave by 7:45 am so excited can walk ๐Ÿšถ there.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 68.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-1.8ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ

I stayed up until after 11 pm last night ๐ŸŒƒ but it was such a nice evening last night and I figured I could sleep in. Chicken, rice, onions, lentils, tomatoes in a wrap was dinner last night cooked over the fire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ As you might have guessed, it was amazing. Lots of moonlight followed by stars โœจ. Hiked 10 miles yesterday along the Long Path and truck trails, along with trips back and forth carrying food and supplies back and forth to the truck. ๐Ÿ›ป

The sunset is in the west-northwest (301ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (183ยฐ) at an altitude of 47ยฐ from the horizon, 246,793 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 29 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 45 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 7th. Southeast wind around 10 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1967.

The beautiful weather keeps rolling into the weekend. โ˜€ Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Maximum dew point of 54 at 6am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees. Fantastic. Not sure if it warrants a trip to the Adirondacks but I definitely want to be camping ๐Ÿ• and hiking somewhere fun and nice. Water temperature is still real cold. Truck cap camping again I’m planning on. It’s certainly more convenient that way.

Looking ahead, next Monday is 8:30 PM Sunset ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ with dusk at 9:05 pm. Nice! On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 77 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 77 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1925. Before my time.

Muddy, But Dramatic

Corridor H

Driving along Corridor “H” the new limited access highway that runs in the Northern Tier of West Virginia from Davis to Morehead past the strip mined coal fields and the big Storm Mountain Coal-fired Power Plant, I was thinking what a truly nasty way to be making electricity, especially in the 21st century, when much cleaner fuels have long been on the market, and when renewables are a growing part of the electricity industry.

Coal Strip Mine Along Corridor H

In the early days of the industrial revolution, coal was the only on-demand source of energy that could be used virtually everywhere. You haul coal somewhere, you get coal lit on fire, it burns hot, often with a thick black smoke, boils water into steam which turns a turbine. More advanced controls were invented which got more heat energy turned into steam, captured more of the soot and chemical byproducts of coal, and generally made coal a better fuel. But from a chemical standpoint, coal can not compete with oil or natural gas, which is much easier to burn and control the output of the furnace. As oil and gas have fewer contaminates it can be burned with much fewer pollution controls. Mount Storm is a large coal-fired generating station. It has what appears to be two active units from the two large currently operating smoke stacks, but there may be multiple units attached to one stack. It produces an enormous cloud of water vapor visible from miles around — including from the Dolly Sods Wilderness and most elevated locations within 30 miles. Water vapor is a nice way to put it — the smoke is mostly carbon dioxide and water but it’s mixed with a wide variety of heavy metals, mercury, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and nitrous oxides. Things that limit the amount of otherwise healthy fish they can safely consume out of streams even far away. It produces a steady output of “base-load” that lights wells over a million households, or a combination of households, factories, and commercial facilities. It’s one of the bigger power plants out there, but certainly not the biggest.

Mount Storm

Mount Storm a big industrial facility with a large cooling reservoir whose warm waters are popular for boating and fishing. The warm cooling water from the plant keeps the lake ice free for much of the year and provides good stable water temperature for fishing. It’s nice that they allow public access to the reservoir, one with impressive views of the plant from the boat launch. That’s great. But what’s no so great is the large open pit mines that surrounded the plant, laid bare for all to see by the construction of the Corridor H Expressway. Mountain top removal, and strip mining turn mountains into mounds that look like garbage dumps. Even “restored” landscapes make mountain look engineered, the hopes of getting new businesses in the area to locate in this remote area are slim — although somewhat improved by Corridor H. For every four tons of coal hauled to the plant, one tons of coal, limestone scrubber residue, and fly ash are landfilled near the plant. The coal fired plant itself is a small part of the landscape compared to the wastes that are disposed of at on-site landfills. You can only see some of the outer walls of the landfills from the WV 94 (the old road) and Corridor H. From satellite pictures you can see much more. Burning coal cuts enormous sections out of mountains, and creates new mountains of ash landfills.

 Coal Mine

Coal haters, myself included, will note that nothing is really clean about coal. Toxic coal air emissions, while a small part of what goes up the smoke stack, are enormous, because so much coal is burned every day, 365 days a year at Mount Storm and thousands of other coal fired plants across the country. The electricity produced lights millions of homes. Not only is mining ugly and restored landscapes are often just a glimmer of the once wild lands, cutting into the earth, especially in places where coal is common, release many toxic compounds.ย  Coal often is mixed with pyrite, commonly known as fools gold. You might get rich off the coal, but your still a fool. Pyrite when it’s exposed to water and rain releases it’s sulfuric compounds, the same ones that often go up the stack when coal is burned. The sulfuric compounds in pyrite mixed with water produce sulfuric acid mine discharge — sometimes as powerful as car battery acid and poison streams, especially hitting fish who are sensitive to even minor changes to pH levels in stream levels. To say nothing of the removed an rerouted streams, which bring sediment downstream, boost nutrient levels, and otherwise wreck formerly good trout streams. Of course if you read my blog, you probably are aware of all these things. That coal is a lot more evil then just the excess amounts of carbon dioxide it’s bleaching into air forever changing both our local and global climates, acidifying the oceans and lakes, changing the natural rhythms of moth earth. But seeing Mount Storm up close seemed to bring that all back home to me.

Mount Storm Lake

Now I also saw the nice rural houses in the neighborhoods, with the neatly maintained yards, beautiful 3/4 ton pickup trucks, a four wheeler or two, and maybe a horse, and a family cow or a hog. All most certainly paid by the good salaries for the engineers and technical people who use their advanced knowledge to keep Mount Storm humming along. Or they work with heavy equipment in the strip mines and below ground mines to feed the ever hungry coal furnaces at Mount Storm. They are doing what they need to do to feed their family and live the good life. I respect them, I might be even kind of jealous because I’d love to live in rural God’s country like this. West Virginia is a special place. Coal may be dirty and working with it may have life-long consequences, it’s a good source of jobs in these towns that don’t have much else to do — sure there are jobs in timber, road construction, local government, a few other industries, but the area is still incredibly rural, even if Corridor H is making it easier to get around. If Virginia finally agrees to extend Corridor H so it meets up with Interstate 81, this area will become even less remote. But even without the final extension, this superhighway — granted one that has grade intersections is making the whole area much better connected together and accessible. I can’t overstate how much Corridor H changes life in the Northern Tier of West Virginia, compared to the much inferior West Virigina 93.

I think it’s fully reasonable to predict that Corridor H will eventually become an interstate highway, connecting with Interstate 81 heading west from Davis to Interstate 79 outside of Morganstown. Mount Storm will probably eventually close. President Donald Trump may say coal will be great again, but it’s a dying, nasty technology, that is long in the tooth, especially as renewables grow on the grid. Probably many of younger generation will move away, rather then struggle with the hard life of Rural Appalachia. Some people will stay and carry on the values, working in other industries or being part of the growing renewable energy industry. As Mount Storm and the coal industry is in it’s twilight years, making as much of a mess as usual, more and more wind turbines are going up on the remote ridges of the pan handle of West Virginia. Areas mined for coal might still be high enough to site new turbines — to say nothing of solar. People will still hunt deer and bear, raise a hog or beef in their backyard, live the good rural life. Mount Storm and the coal industry may be on it’s last horrific breath, but it doesn’t mean Appalachia and it’s beautiful landscape must come to an end.

 Expressway

Despite all the blasting, the large bridges, and forever changed landscape, I think Corridor H is great. It shows the beauty and ugliness of West Virginia. It will move the whole area forward, make it less remote, and allow it to transition to the industry of tomorrow. The sheer distance from other population centers will limit high-end residential and commercial development, to say nothing of the steep mountains slopes, the rough rocky terrain, even if the distances aren’t as far thanks to the safe, modern road. I think everybody should drive Corridor H at least once.

 Carbon

June 17, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Next Thursday is the latest sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ of the year and the Strawberry Moon ๐Ÿ“ ๐ŸŒ• . Lots of things to keep the lights up late that day. Sunny and 57 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž There is a west-southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 44 degrees. Kind of a chilly start for a late June morning although the heat right now is lurking out on the west coast.

My bags are packed ๐Ÿ’ผ and I’m ready to head to the Adirondacks after work. I decided not to drive work because it’s just easier to leave from home and leaving a bit after 6 pm means I shouldn’t hit much traffic. The coolers will last longer with everything in the fridge or freezer today. ๐Ÿฅš I forgot to get eggs yesterday so I’ll have to stop at Stewart’s on the way up north. Not sure if the forecast is as nice as previously announced but I am glad to be gone this long weekend where I can enjoy the quiet. ๐Ÿคซ No cell service where I’m going, should be nice and quiet.

Bus reroute this morning ๐ŸšŒ due to a house fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ on Delaware Avenue. Been a while since a building burnt there but house fires ๐Ÿ”ฅ in the city seem to follow a trend – neighborhoods destabilize and then one building after another burns. It just seems like Albany is sliding down hill. The whole city after decades of improvement after pollution controls were implemented is just sliding backwards. It may be the pandemic but also foreign investment driving up the rents and driving out the tenants and businesses. All that money ๐Ÿ’ต from China purchases is being reinvested in our community by China slumlords looking for a place to park their cash.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 75 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 31st. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1994.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:57 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.8° from the due south horizon (-0.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:53 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (297°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (304°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:36 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 28 seconds with dusk around 9:10 pm, which is 21 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (225°) at an altitude of 44° from the horizon, 231,723 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:57 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 18 minutes of daytime, an increase of 16 seconds over yesterday.

I can wait until the work day is over to head up north. I am thinking I also need maple syrup besides eggs for my pancakes. ๐Ÿฅž I might end up going to Price Chopper in Gloversville. I wish I had just skip the run to the store yesterday. That was dumb on my part. Well, I guess it is what is. I just got flustered over the stupid can return and then I couldn’t find what I needed in the store. I feel stupid but it ain’t the end of world. The days are long now, I don’t care if I get up to camp really late although I’d kind of like to get that House Pond Campsite if possible.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 19th. West wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2020, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 39 occurred back in 1958.

On this day in 1972, Five White House operatives are arrested for burgling the offices of the Democratic National Committee, ๐Ÿ‘ฎ๐Ÿผ‍โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘ค in an attempt by some members of the Republican party to illegally wiretap the opposition. This would become the basis for the Watergate scandal.

The Juneteenth Weekend looks nice. ๐Ÿ– Friday, mostly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind 5 to 9 mph. Saturday, scattered showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 82. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 65 at 10am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 81. Maximum dew point of 61 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees.

As previously noted, next Thursday is Latest Sunset of the year ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm with dusk at 9:12 pm. On that day in 2020, we had humid weather and partly sunny skies, rain showers in the afternoon and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 82 degrees. We hit a record high of 96 back in 1943.

April 23, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Going to Be a Beautiful Friday! Maybe not super warm, but an improvement over yesterday. Two weeks to 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ . Summer is coming. Less then two months now, and we could certainly have some nice warm days come May. Even mid-next week looks quite pleasant. This morning, it’s sunny and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Cold start to the morning, but it will be fairly warm this afternoon bar the breeze. Wearing the hoodie over my shirt for the morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ‍โ™€๏ธ

Yesterday, I went over to John Wolcott’s House ๐Ÿ”Ž and spent several hours going through his Pinksterfest archives, looking for a misplaced long-lost letter about the Fort Orange dig. โœ‰๏ธ Didn’t find it but there was a lot of interesting things about the history of the Pinksterfest ๐ŸŒธ and the Mid-crosstown Arterial in his files. ๐Ÿ“‚ I wanted to go to the Earth Day Rally ๐ŸŒŽ but by the time I got there after work, the rally had already broken up. Part of it was I didn’t catch the bus I wanted to get downtown, ๐ŸšŒ because the bus schedule still has the reduced rush-hour service, and I didn’t check it real careful. The Earth Day rally was supposed to go until 6 PM but I think it ended early with the police protests ๐Ÿš“ in the other part of the city. ๐Ÿ‘Š Truth be told, I am just a lot less interested politics and citizen activism these days. ๐Ÿฆ‹ Save the Pine Bush is my big thing.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 58 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Breezy, with a west wind 8 to 13 mph increasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 33 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 56 degrees. The record high of 87 was set in 2007. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 60° from the due south horizon (-10.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:08 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (282°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

Today I am going to get packed for the Adirondacks ๐Ÿ• as my hope is head north tonight for a long weekend, possibly into next week. ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ ๐ŸŒฒ I am thinking about working remotely on Monday from the Adirondacks, as long as the weather is nice enough and maybe staying into Tuesday, a bit in a different campsite so to limit my stay to 3 nights in any one location. I have a lot going on today, so it’s going to be busy for packing, and I want to try to get to store mid-day and maybe down to the laundromat when I work, or maybe I have enough clothes if I wait and reuse some jeans — that is if I pick up another pair today. ๐Ÿ‘– Going to be a cold night up north with the wind, but I’ll have my heater โ™จ๏ธ and I can build a small fire for warmth. ๐Ÿ”ฅ still going to be some snow to deal with up north.

Really starting to get a bit low on clothes, ๐Ÿ‘• and as I haven’t bought any in over a year as I’ve not needed as much working from home. ๐Ÿ‘ž My dress shoes are still in the office, sitting drawer they’ve been since the beginning of the pandemic. Going to need a good polish when I go get them, as come May I think I’ll be in office more, although it gets tricky with all the remaining COVID-restrictions. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ That and I haven’t been to the laundromat or my parents house in over a week.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (288°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:47 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 3 seconds with dusk around 8:16 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (131°) at an altitude of 45° from the horizon, 231,553 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:53 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 45 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Today my cellphone renews ๐Ÿ“ฒ and I’m hoping that will go well. Still not sure if my new credit card is working ๐Ÿ’ณ, those temporary $1 authorizations that caught my eye last weekend still haven’t dropped off the bill. I should maybe call the credit card company to ensure my card is still active. I am starting to think it was all just a system glitch with the dozen or so $1 authorizations, maybe something went wrong when I went to buy milk ๐Ÿฅ› the other day at the store, and my worry is just that. Pure silliness. But you can’t be too careful these days. Need to make sure that’s straightened out before I go north.

Also, we are doing another recording session with John Wolcott and some of other Save the Pine Bush people for our history project ๐Ÿ“œ tonight, but if I am going north, I am not going to be able to participate. But it is what it is, I’ve wanted to get out of town for some weeks now. ๐Ÿ• It should be a real nice night, but maybe a bit chilly. Maybe a little snow up north. Probably be setting up after dark, but I have flashlights ๐Ÿ”ฆ and lights, as I have my therapy session at 4 PM and I’m sure it will run after 5 PM. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ My lantern is working well. ๐Ÿฎ Also I might have to work late, so who knows, but I’d really like to get out of town today.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 4am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 25th. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. In 2020, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 40 degrees. The record low of 25 occurred back in 1965.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 68 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 10th. West wind 8 to 10 mph. Should be a very nice spring day. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 54 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 2001. 1.2 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

I am chewing over my options for hikes on Saturday, but I am still leaning towards Pine Orchard. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ, although there are a handful of other options. There are a lot of hikes I haven’t done over the years, but one thing to consider is how muddy the trails will be. It might actually be better to just do a road hike to stay out of the mud. I’ll have to think about it, especially if I am planning to spend part of next week up north.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely, mainly before 2pm. ๐ŸŒง Mostly cloudy, with a high near 60. Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 62 degrees.

Seems like it will be wet on Sunday, but actually not that bad when you consider total precipitation. โ›ˆ It would be fun to work up north on Monday, maybe sit out by Lake Pleasant listening to some music using either my laptop or phone for work. Might be a bit cool on Monday but I can wear a jacket and sun will feel real nice. Then I might head home on Monday or find somewhere and stay through Tuesday or Wednesday. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Mason Lake isn’t a option though for another month as the road is closed due to mud season and frost coming out of the ground.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 8:02 pm with dusk at 8:33 pm. On that day in 2020, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 65 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 67 degrees. That will be real nice. We hit a record high of 92 back in 1930.

October 8, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Dark Thursday. ๐Ÿ˜Š No power still this morning. ๐Ÿ”Œ Next Thursday is Average High is 60 ๐Ÿ‚. Mostly sunny and 43 degrees in the land of the Delmartian. There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 25 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ.

I still can’t believe there is no power in Delmar. ๐Ÿ”Œ There are a few branches down but not a lot. The traffic lights ๐Ÿšฅ are working mainly because they’re on portable generators. Nice morning though. ๐ŸŒ…

I ended up eating breakfast out back. โ˜• Fresh coffee on a cold but sunny morning is always a good thing. ๐Ÿณ Camp stove works fine without electricity.

Out for my morning walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป. I thought they had power back on in Delaware but it’s just a generator. โšก

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 59 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 17th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 65 degrees. The record high of 80 was set in 2017.

I guess if you are going to loose power this is the weather to be in the dark. ๐ŸŒƒ Nights are long but you don’t need heat โ™จ but it’s cool enough that my refrigerator packed full of ice should be good for a few days.

It looks like I won’t be getting
