Camping During the Early March 2016 Heatwave.

In 2016, spring came early with our first 81 degree day on Wednesday, March 9. It was an exceptionally warm day, the earliest 80 degree day on record. We got rain on Thursday but with temperatures in the low sixties, meant it just further melted the snow and kept the ground from getting too dried out. So what I do? I went out to Schoharie County to camp down at Betty Brook.

It was in the 40s to start out that Saturday, but got up to mid-60s by mid day. Lots of blue skies, although the grass was pretty day. I first started out the day at Franklinton Valie outside of Middleburgh.

I then went down to Mine Kill State Park on this most beautiful of early spring days.

It was wonderful camping down by Betty Brook.

A bit cool in the morning, but I brought my heater.

But by a few hours in the morning, after the time change, it was back up in the 60s. Not bad for March 13th.

The next day I hiked along the Old NY 30 at Max V Shaul State Park, aka Towpath Mountain Park.

After that I hiked Vromans Nose. It looked more like late April then early march this year.

Don’t you wish all mid-March days could be this nice?

November 21, 2020 10 AM Update

Good morning! It’s Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone 🦌! Big game ain’t my thing living in the suburbs but all my country buds are up in their stands today with their rifles and shotguns. 🔫 Next Saturday is Small Business Saturday. 🛍️ I’ll probably be out camping, God willing. Partly cloudy and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. ⛅ There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. 🍃 with gusts up to 25 mph 💨💨💨. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday morning around midnight. ☃️

Cornbread pancakes 🥞 this morning for breakfast. I like them, they are a nice hardy breakfast compared to having regular pancakes with fruit 🍒 which can get boring after a while although I’ve been seriously enjoying the frozen pineapple chunks 🍍 I’ve been having all week. I like frozen fruits and vegetables as they don’t have a lot of packaging to get rid of and they are inexpensive and don’t spoil in the freezer.

Today will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 50 degrees at 10am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 11th. At least back in the day. I had the heat on Thursday but since then it’s been mild enough ♨ I’ve been keeping it turned down. I am sure I’ll need more in a few weeks especially working from home but I’m thinking I’ll get a heating pad and maybe a small desktop heater with a fan to turn on briefly when I get chilled and don’t want to necessarily crank up the heat on both floors of the apartment or use the upstairs electric baseboard heat. It’s gas downstairs, but that heater is rather slow.

November 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 50 🍂! 😂 Fake news, in a few hours it will be 70 degrees. Three weeks to December. 🎄 Mostly sunny ☀ and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. 🍃.

A nice sunny ☀ morning. Out for my morning walk, enjoying the sunshine. 🚶🏻 I wish all days would be this nice but so be it. Unfortunately Tuesday is meeting day, so I will be going downtown later 🚍 for my sexual harassment training among other things. The air has a tinge of manure 💩 and wood smoke ☁️on it from the farm down the street wood furnace. To be expected in November. I do miss the pungent and sweet smell 👃🏻 of the silage in Madison County. 🐮

I need to run to the store to get more milk 🥛. I had enough for my first cup of coffee ☕ but I think I’ll want more for later on. I got groceries yesterday on my way to John Wolcott’s house for more history filming. 📼 I told him I might come over after work today assuming that I get done at a reasonable hour. 🕒

I bought a mid sized bottle of hand sanitizer 🖐🏻at Wally World. While I normally use prefer just soap and water 💦 hand sanitizer is good while camping and after shopping 🛒 should the pandemic get out of control again and you have to be afraid of touching shit. Last week I went to buy hand sanitizer and actually bought liquid soap. But I’m using that for washing dishes 🍴 and while camping. I don’t use biodegrade soap, it’s not hurting anything if you dispose waste water away from the creeks. No different than burning the plastic bottles. ♻

August 10, 2020 Evening

I don’t think I would describe today as bad day, 😒but things didn’t quite go exactly to plan. While I did get a shower 🚿 in and about five minutes of swimming ⚡ it wasn’t the full day of swimming 🏊🏻‍♂️ I had planned. I was prepared for thunderstorms ⛈ in the evening but not the countless rumbles of thunder after 2 pm. I guess I can’t complain about the rain much – I didn’t get wet until very briefly at Clute Park 💧 and I was dry by the time I got back to camp.

I like the Watkins Glen State Park pool 🏊🏻‍♂️ a lot but this year is like no other. During the pandemic we are all living through I was really freaked out by the crowds at the entrance and the pool. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 While I’ve never been a real people person, crowds are scary during a pandemic. 👾Even parts of the trail – until I got west of the trail were kind of scary with the crowds. I tried to maintain my social distance and flip the mask over my face 😷 but sometimes it’s just scary. I want to enjoy my vacation in these most scary times, but I also don’t want to end up on a ventilator choking for life, all alone in a hospital 🏥.

I couldn’t get goggles anywhere in Watkins Glen 👀 so I guess I will have to do without. Hopefully my eyes won’t get too irritated from the pool chlorine. 👁️ That said after today’s experience I don’t expect to be spend a lot more time in the parks although I do like a good shower 🚿 or swim 🏊🏻‍♂️ while camping. I thought a Monday at the parks in August would be a heck of a lot quieter. It seems like everybody is craving outdoor recreation during the pandemic. 🏞 Or maybe it’s just I notice people and crowds a lot more during the pandemic. 😷 I can wear a mask and wash my hands 👐 good bit there is only so much I can do.

Glen Dairy Bar was good 🥤, ultimately I decided on a strawberry 🍓 slushy over ice cream. No complaints there, I could taste the pieces of strawberry in it. I am sure I’ll be back for more tomorrow. Thinking ice cream tomorrow. That banana 🍌 sundae I saw somebody have looked amazing. Of course with social distancing these days the lines look much larger but they were busy too with the hot weather. 🍨🍧🍦

Sat down by Seneca Lake for a while 🐼/strong>򎱡nd it was quite pleasant but a fair number of people around. Started to walk along the shoreline and the sky just opened up and started to pour. 🌧️ Ran back to my truck and by the time I got to Bennettsville the sky was clear. ☀ Go figure. It looks like they got pounded with rain just north of Elmira today. I wonder if there was flooding or storm damage down that way ?

Made up hot sausage paddy burgers 🍔 with American cheese which when the bun is well toasted and with some ketchup is quite the treat. I often also put red sauce on the patties but not this time as I decided to bring only one cooler so I have limited space for cold stuff. I actually like them better than beef burgers 🥩 but don’t tell a cow that. I also had a couple of beers 🍻to wash the day away.

I normally bring too coolers but last minute on Saturday I decided to leave one home to save space. 🗃 I am already regretting that decision as it limits meal choices. 🍴 In the early spring or late fall one cooler is fine but this time of year I like to have two so I can store both cold and cool foods. But I get tired of always buying so much ice and having to move and clean with two coolers all the time. ❄ Ice takes up a lot of space but true automotive refrigerators use a lot of electricity expensive and aren’t real energy efficient. ⚡

I came out here a large part for that great pool I’ll be disappointed if I can’t have some good fun in the sun tomorrow.

August 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Hardly a bummer during summer vacation. I’m hiking the Finger Lakes Trail this morning 🚶🏽, getting nice and hot and sweaty before going to the swimming pool 🏊🏻‍♂️ later. Two weeks to until the Average High Falls To 79 ️Degrees ⛱️️️. But you won’t think that today. Partly sunny and 87 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 69 degrees. Yeah, it doesn’t get much hotter in the Finger Lakes. 💥 It’s a hot one for sure. But I’m enjoying my hike up past the Upper Reservoirs and Group Camp on Glen Falls and I might even hike as far west as Sugar Hill State Forest. One consideration with the heat though is I better not get to th pool too late lest thunderstorms ⛈ come rolling through and they close.

Absolutely stunningly beautiful day ☀ but it’s already hot.🌡️Already quite hazy and the air conditioning in Big Red is pissing moisture like a cow pisses. 🐄💦But it’s cool up here at the park 🏞 and camping up on backbone. 🗻 Fixed my dash cam so hopefully I won’t be getting a ton of pictures of the sky today. 🌞

Pools open at eleven in the Finger Lakes. I have my bandana on and are flipping it up as necessary as a mask. 😷 I’m staying out of the gorge as I think that would more difficult to maintain social distancing there. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦➡️👱🏼‍♂️Bought some crackers and cheese 🧀 to snack on for lunch.

I really wanted to get goggles as my old ones broke and needed to be replaced so my eyes 👀 don’t get irritated by the chlorine.👁️‍🗨️ But after trying two stores they’re gone for the year. It might be 90 degrees out but all they’re selling is Halloween Candy 🍬 and Thanksgiving Turkey. 🦃

July 28, 2020 10 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Clouds, occasional rain showers and 72 degrees at the Bethlehem Public Library. ☔ There is a west breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 66 degrees. Still kind of muggy. The skies will clear around 11 am.

This morning started out with the most pleasant of rains, 🌦 a good soaker but not so hard that it was likely to cause flooding. It’s been a hot few days and we need the rain. I heard the woods was burning up again in the Altona Flatlands up in the North Country, and certainly stream levels are quite low — as seen by the picture of the Potholers that I posted the other day.🏞️

I started out my morning get my teeth cleaned. 🦷 I have to admit I haven’t been brushing as much as I should regularly, but I didn’t get balled out too much by the dental hygentist. I should do better but I ran out of toothpaste while camping, 🤓 and forgot to pick some of what would have probably been $10 tube of toothpaste at Charlie Johns. I almost missed this appointment, had my dental hygentist not called me on Friday afternoon. So now you know the real reason for me coming back home.

I got my teeth cleaned. 🦷🦷🦷🦷🤓 It was relatively painless, and I didn’t get called out that badly for being as bad at flossing and brushing as I have been this past summer. This weekend I’ll probably stay in town. 🦉 I have some things that I need to do in town, and I might take the following week off for work, for some kind of real summer vacation. No idea where I will go, although I’m leaning towards the Finger Lakes. Yeah, I’m hardly excited about visiting state parks with all the social distancing, but it would be nice to set up camp for the week, and just be able to hang out at the National Forest all week, doing some hiking, fishing, and paddling on some of the lakes.🚤🚶⛺ I was thinking originally about going to the Western Adirondacks and Saint Lawrence County, but I’m getting tired of the Adirondacks after my “workacation” up there to beat the heat for so much of the summer.

July 10, 2020 Night

Good evening! Rain and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☁ There is a east breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 71 degrees.

Back home from the Green Mountains. 🏡 It was nice to get away and avoid the heat and humidity but I didn’t feel like camping in the rain ☔ and it looked like all Saturday would be rainy. While it would be nice to have the day off from work when I had more time to play around in the mountains Saturday didn’t look very nice so I came home. I really liked that campsite down by the Deerfield River swimming hole 🏊 but it’s not normally easy to get unless you go up there midweek.

I didn’t like how much litter 🚮 and toilet paper flowers I found up there but I tried to clean things up to the best of my ability. I didn’t take home the junk tire or the multiple bags of garbage I found dumped back in the brush but I did burn and pack out cans for recycling from the one bag of litter I found out front. ♻ Campsite is a lot cleaner than when I found it.

The drive back home was uneventful 🚘 started to rain hard as I left but it helped with the very wash board Somerset Road. The rest of the trip was quiet except for getting onto the Molly Stark Highway at rush hour – kind of busy. 🚚 🚙

The Hoosick Valley was a bit pungent of cow manure, 💩 they were spreading it on hay fields before the rain probably so it soaks into the ground good and to keep the slurry tank from overflowing should we get a ton of rain. 🐮

It was odd driving past the state employees overflow parking lot 🅿 and seeing it all barricaded and closed but I’m guessing it’s not needed or used and the shuttles aren’t running 🚍 with most state workers telecommuting during the pandemic.

Listening 👂 to the rain, I’m glad I’m home at camping in wet weather isn’t much fun. Just everything gets wet and smokey. I still should plan on taking a summer vacation 🏊 in a few weeks and with remote work not expected to end anytime soon I have plenty of opportunities to head back to the Green Mountains or anywhere else I have cell service and work remotely from there.
