Camping During the Early March 2016 Heatwave.

In 2016, spring came early with our first 81 degree day on Wednesday, March 9. It was an exceptionally warm day, the earliest 80 degree day on record. We got rain on Thursday but with temperatures in the low sixties, meant it just further melted the snow and kept the ground from getting too dried out. So what I do? I went out to Schoharie County to camp down at Betty Brook.

It was in the 40s to start out that Saturday, but got up to mid-60s by mid day. Lots of blue skies, although the grass was pretty day. I first started out the day at Franklinton Valie outside of Middleburgh.

Towards Stone Store State Forest

I then went down to Mine Kill State Park on this most beautiful of early spring days.

Lower falls

It was wonderful camping down by Betty Brook.

Last night

A bit cool in the morning, but I brought my heater.

Morning along Betty Brook

But by a few hours in the morning, after the time change, it was back up in the 60s. Not bad for March 13th.

Newish Betty Brook Bridge

The next day I hiked along the Old NY 30 at Max V Shaul State Park, aka Towpath Mountain Park.

Why the Old Route 30 trail is closed.

Schoharie Creek

After that I hiked Vromans Nose. It looked more like late April then early march this year.

Don’t you wish all mid-March days could be this nice?

November 21, 2020 10 AM Update

Good morning! It’s Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ! Big game ain’t my thing living in the suburbs but all my country buds are up in their stands today with their rifles and shotguns. ๐Ÿ”ซ Next Saturday is Small Business Saturday. ๐Ÿ›๏ธ I’ll probably be out camping, God willing. Partly cloudy and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 25 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday morning around midnight. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Cornbread pancakes ๐Ÿฅž this morning for breakfast. I like them, they are a nice hardy breakfast compared to having regular pancakes with fruit ๐Ÿ’ which can get boring after a while although I’ve been seriously enjoying the frozen pineapple chunks ๐Ÿ I’ve been having all week. I like frozen fruits and vegetables as they don’t have a lot of packaging to get rid of and they are inexpensive and don’t spoil in the freezer.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 50 degrees at 10am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 11th. At least back in the day. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became mostly clear by afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. 0.8 inches of snow fell back in 1937.โ„

I am going to walk out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ a little after noon. This way I can have lunch before I leave and just bring my binoculars and camera ๐Ÿ“ธ. Sunny now, maybe I should go now but I’m enjoying a lazy Saturday listening ๐Ÿ‘‚๐Ÿป to the radio ๐Ÿ“ป, wasting bandwidth on Facebook. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

I had the heat on Thursday but since then it’s been mild enough โ™จ I’ve been keeping it turned down. I am sure I’ll need more in a few weeks especially working from home but I’m thinking I’ll get a heating pad and maybe a small desktop heater with a fan to turn on briefly when I get chilled and don’t want to necessarily crank up the heat on both floors of the apartment or use the upstairs electric baseboard heat. It’s gas downstairs, but that heater is rather slow.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 27.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-43.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Shadows are long this time of year. Sun is weak. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:46 pm with the sun in the southwest (236ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (243ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:29 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 4:58 pm, which is 42 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southeast (166ยฐ) at an altitude of 29ยฐ from the horizon, 242,928 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:34 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 45 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 32 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 24 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 8th. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 2018.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 40 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 4th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning, which became mostly clear by afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1931. 9.1 inches of snow fell back in 1943.โ„

Tomorrow doesn’t sound really nice ๐Ÿ˜” but I’m probably going out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ Maybe a morning walk like last week, depending on the weather. I should run to the store ๐Ÿฌ next week before the craziness ๐Ÿคช of Black Friday and holiday / Thanksgiving shopping ๐Ÿ›’ to get some food and supplies, and return beer cans โ™ป that have been sitting in the back of my truck since I camped at Stoney Pond.

As previously noted, next Saturday is Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:55 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 47 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 43 degrees. We hit a record high of 68 back in 1990.

In four weeks on December 19 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (238ยฐ) at 4:24 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 3 minutes and 33 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had cold, mostly sunny and temperatures between 18 and 6 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 35 and 20 degrees. The record high of 54 degrees was set back in 1895.

Looking ahead, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 1 week, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 2 weeks (with the bars closed due to the CORONA), First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is a month away, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 5 weeks, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 7 weeks (careful with electronics projects), National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 9 weeks, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 11 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 13 weeks, Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 14 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 14 weeks.

November 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Fake news, in a few hours it will be 70 degrees. Three weeks to December. ๐ŸŽ„ Mostly sunny โ˜€ and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

A nice sunny โ˜€ morning. Out for my morning walk, enjoying the sunshine. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I wish all days would be this nice but so be it. Unfortunately Tuesday is meeting day, so I will be going downtown later ๐Ÿš for my sexual harassment training among other things. The air has a tinge of manure ๐Ÿ’ฉ and wood smoke โ˜๏ธon it from the farm down the street wood furnace. To be expected in November. I do miss the pungent and sweet smell ๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป of the silage in Madison County. ๐Ÿฎ

I need to run to the store to get more milk ๐Ÿฅ›. I had enough for my first cup of coffee โ˜• but I think I’ll want more for later on. I got groceries yesterday on my way to John Wolcott’s house for more history filming. ๐Ÿ“ผ I told him I might come over after work today assuming that I get done at a reasonable hour. ๐Ÿ•’

I bought a mid sized bottle of hand sanitizer ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿปat Wally World. While I normally use prefer just soap and water ๐Ÿ’ฆ hand sanitizer is good while camping and after shopping ๐Ÿ›’ should the pandemic get out of control again and you have to be afraid of touching shit. Last week I went to buy hand sanitizer and actually bought liquid soap. But I’m using that for washing dishes ๐Ÿด and while camping. I don’t use biodegrade soap, it’s not hurting anything if you dispose waste water away from the creeks. No different than burning the plastic bottles. โ™ป

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 70 degrees at 2pm. 20 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 22nd. When there is no hope, there is a warm November day. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 1931. 3.2 inches of snow fell back in 1987.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:40 am with sun having an altitude of 30.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-40.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Yeah, I know how to use the math weather. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:57 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (240ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (247ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:39 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 9 seconds with dusk around 5:07 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:42 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 56 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 19 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 5am. 24 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 2nd. Leave your windows open in Biden’s America. Maximum dew point of 57 at 3am. South wind around 8 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 30 degrees. The record low of 15 occurred back in 1956.

The weekend is about what you can expect for mid November. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, sunny, with a high near 48. Sunday, a chance of rain and snow showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 49. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Typical average high for the weekend is 49 degrees.

Saturday I’m heading out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ I think. Just a walk out there. Sunday doesn’t look really nice but I’ll go out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ I am going to see if I can download some GIS data to work on projects or get out my soldering iron.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until December ๐ŸŽ„ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2019, we had snow and temperatures between 28 and 17 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 41 degrees. We hit a record high of 67 back in 1934.

Very Winter Looking Campsite Along East Canada Creek

August 10, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Partly cloudy โ˜๏ธand 79 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒณ There is a south-southwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 68 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

I don’t think I would describe today as bad day, ๐Ÿ˜’but things didn’t quite go exactly to plan. While I did get a shower ๐Ÿšฟ in and about five minutes of swimming โšก it wasn’t the full day of swimming ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I had planned. I was prepared for thunderstorms โ›ˆ in the evening but not the countless rumbles of thunder after 2 pm. I guess I can’t complain about the rain much – I didn’t get wet until very briefly at Clute Park ๐Ÿ’ง and I was dry by the time I got back to camp.

I like the Watkins Glen State Park pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ a lot but this year is like no other. During the pandemic we are all living through I was really freaked out by the crowds at the entrance and the pool. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง While I’ve never been a real people person, crowds are scary during a pandemic. ๐Ÿ‘พEven parts of the trail – until I got west of the trail were kind of scary with the crowds. I tried to maintain my social distance and flip the mask over my face ๐Ÿ˜ท but sometimes it’s just scary. I want to enjoy my vacation in these most scary times, but I also don’t want to end up on a ventilator choking for life, all alone in a hospital ๐Ÿฅ.

I couldn’t get goggles anywhere in Watkins Glen ๐Ÿ‘€ so I guess I will have to do without. Hopefully my eyes won’t get too irritated from the pool chlorine. ๐Ÿ‘๏ธ That said after today’s experience I don’t expect to be spend a lot more time in the parks although I do like a good shower ๐Ÿšฟ or swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ while camping. I thought a Monday at the parks in August would be a heck of a lot quieter. It seems like everybody is craving outdoor recreation during the pandemic. ๐Ÿž Or maybe it’s just I notice people and crowds a lot more during the pandemic. ๐Ÿ˜ท I can wear a mask and wash my hands ๐Ÿ‘ good bit there is only so much I can do.

Glen Dairy Bar was good ๐Ÿฅค, ultimately I decided on a strawberry ๐Ÿ“ slushy over ice cream. No complaints there, I could taste the pieces of strawberry in it. I am sure I’ll be back for more tomorrow. Thinking ice cream tomorrow. That banana ๐ŸŒ sundae I saw somebody have looked amazing. Of course with social distancing these days the lines look much larger but they were busy too with the hot weather. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿง๐Ÿฆ

Sat down by Seneca Lake for a while ๐Ÿผ/strong>๒Žฑกnd it was quite pleasant but a fair number of people around. Started to walk along the shoreline and the sky just opened up and started to pour. ๐ŸŒง๏ธ Ran back to my truck and by the time I got to Bennettsville the sky was clear. โ˜€ Go figure. It looks like they got pounded with rain just north of Elmira today. I wonder if there was flooding or storm damage down that way ?

Made up hot sausage paddy burgers ๐Ÿ” with American cheese which when the bun is well toasted and with some ketchup is quite the treat. I often also put red sauce on the patties but not this time as I decided to bring only one cooler so I have limited space for cold stuff. I actually like them better than beef burgers ๐Ÿฅฉ but don’t tell a cow that. I also had a couple of beers ๐Ÿปto wash the day away.

I normally bring too coolers but last minute on Saturday I decided to leave one home to save space. ๐Ÿ—ƒ I am already regretting that decision as it limits meal choices. ๐Ÿด In the early spring or late fall one cooler is fine but this time of year I like to have two so I can store both cold and cool foods. But I get tired of always buying so much ice and having to move and clean with two coolers all the time. โ„ Ice takes up a lot of space but true automotive refrigerators use a lot of electricity expensive and aren’t real energy efficient. โšก

Tonight will become mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at pm. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 56% illuminated. The moon will rise at 11:50 pm. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Monday, August 24. The darkest hour is at 1:14 am, followed by dawn at 5:40 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:11 am in the east-northeast (68ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 6 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:50 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 9 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2pm. Sunny and hot ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 93 degrees at 3pm. 12 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. South wind 6 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1944.

Tomorrow planning on another early start, ๐ŸŒ… I think first heading for a good swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ at the Watkins Glen State Park Pool then paddling from the new boat ๐Ÿ›ฅ launch just east of Clute Park. Lake was very placid today and I expect the same tomorrow but I’m more concerned about thunderstorms tomorrow. โ›ˆ I got some nice muffins to have with my coffee โ˜• tomorrow morning.

Heading to bed ๐Ÿ› early so I can get up early. Between the clouds ๐ŸŒฅ and the fact I was tired ๐Ÿ˜ด decided against a hike to Foster Pond tonight. Still a ton of people camping up there tonight. I came out here a large part for that great pool I’ll be disappointed if I can’t have some good fun in the sun tomorrow.

In four weeks on September 7 the sun will be setting in the west (278ยฐ) at 7:30 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 44 minutes and 36 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 73 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 76 and 55 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1945. Just another reminder that autumn is coming.

Looking ahead, Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ is in 2 weeks, Labor Day ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿญ is in 4 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is a month away, Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 9 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 3 months, Cyber Monday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ and Beaver Moon ๐ŸŽ‘ is in 16 weeks, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 4 months, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 19 weeks, 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 20 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 23 weeks, Martin Luther King Day ๐Ÿ–ค is in 23 weeks, 5 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 24 weeks, February ๐ŸŒง is in 25 weeks and Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is in 6 months. So you have a lot of time for garbage to accumulate on your computers before it’s time for a big bonfire. ๐Ÿ’พ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Hot but nice morning

August 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. Hardly a bummer during summer vacation. I’m hiking the Finger Lakes Trail this morning ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ, getting nice and hot and sweaty before going to the swimming pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ later. Two weeks to until the Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ. But you won’t think that today. Partly sunny and 87 degrees at the Watkins Glen State Park. There is a southwest breeze at 5 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 69 degrees. The muggy weather ends Wednesday around 7 pm. ๐Ÿ˜“

Yeah, it doesn’t get much hotter in the Finger Lakes. ๐Ÿ’ฅ It’s a hot one for sure. But I’m enjoying my hike up past the Upper Reservoirs and Group Camp on Glen Falls and I might even hike as far west as Sugar Hill State Forest. One consideration with the heat though is I better not get to th pool too late lest thunderstorms โ›ˆ come rolling through and they close.

Absolutely stunningly beautiful day โ˜€ but it’s already hot.๐ŸŒก๏ธAlready quite hazy and the air conditioning in Big Red is pissing moisture like a cow pisses. ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ’ฆBut it’s cool up here at the park ๐Ÿž and camping up on backbone. ๐Ÿ—ป Fixed my dash cam so hopefully I won’t be getting a ton of pictures of the sky today. ๐ŸŒž

Well I got a bit of a late start due to sleeping ๐Ÿ˜ด in as I as I ended up staying up late last night, laying back in the hammock after my walk to Foster Pond๐ŸŒŒ. Still can’t believe how many people were camping ๐Ÿ• up that way. Honestly, I don’t mind not having cell service at camp ๐Ÿ“ถ and having

Regardless, I made it to Watkins Glen by a little after 10am and was able to get parking by the pool ๐Ÿ…ฟ even during the pandemic.๐Ÿ‘พ I was worried they’d be limiting parking and it would be closed if I got there after 10. Pools open at eleven in the Finger Lakes. I have my bandana on and are flipping it up as necessary as a mask. ๐Ÿ˜ท I’m staying out of the gorge as I think that would more difficult to maintain social distancing there. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆโžก๏ธ๐Ÿ‘ฑ๐Ÿผโ€โ™‚๏ธBought some crackers and cheese ๐Ÿง€ to snack on for lunch.

I really wanted to get goggles as my old ones broke and needed to be replaced so my eyes ๐Ÿ‘€ don’t get irritated by the chlorine.๐Ÿ‘๏ธโ€๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ But after trying two stores they’re gone for the year. It might be 90 degrees out but all they’re selling is Halloween Candy ๐Ÿฌ and Thanksgiving Turkey. ๐Ÿฆƒ

Today will have scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5pm. Mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 90 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 10am. That’s a cooker for the Finger Lakes. ๐ŸŒก๏ธPeople must be roasting back in Albany. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

This afternoon I plan to spend most of my time at the pool ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then get ice cream ๐Ÿฆat Glen Dairy Bar and groceries at Tops. Then I’ll sit at Clute Park and fish ๐Ÿ  and watch as the sun starts to drop. ๐ŸŒ‡

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:14 pm with sun having an altitude of 63ยฐ from the due south horizon (-7.9ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:38 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:17 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:45 pm, which is one minute and 21 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:25 pm. Not sure if I’ll hike back to Foster Pond this evening ๐ŸŒƒ but I will probably spend some time at Clute Park fishing ๐ŸŽฃ before heading back to camp. At sunset, look for thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 81 degrees. The dew point will be 68 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 5 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 25 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have isolated showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 69 degrees at 6am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Saturday may not be the greatest day ever. ๐Ÿ˜ž Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 67 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 84. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 65 at 7am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High Falls To 79 ๏ธDegrees โ›ฑ๏ธ๏ธ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 7:54 pm with dusk at 8:23 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 75 and 53 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1947.

July 28, 2020 10 AM Update

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Clouds, occasional rain showers and 72 degrees at the Bethlehem Public Library. โ˜” There is a west breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 66 degrees. Still kind of muggy. The skies will clear around 11 am.

This morning started out with the most pleasant of rains, ๐ŸŒฆย  a good soaker but not so hard that it was likely to cause flooding. It’s been a hot few days and we need the rain. I heard the woods was burning up again in the Altona Flatlands up in the North Country, and certainly stream levels are quite low — as seen by the picture of the Potholers that I posted the other day.๐Ÿž๏ธ

Today will have a slight chance of showers before noon, then a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 2pm. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 81 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 10th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 10am. West wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 90 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1929.

I started out my morning get my teeth cleaned. ๐Ÿฆทย I have to admit I haven’t been brushing as much as I should regularly, but I didn’t get balled out too much by the dental hygentist. I should do better but I ran out of toothpaste while camping, ๐Ÿค“ and forgot to pick some of what would have probably been $10 tube of toothpaste at Charlie Johns. I almost missed this appointment, had my dental hygentist not called me on Friday afternoon. So now you know the real reason for me coming back home.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.2ยฐ from the due south horizon (-4.6ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:40 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (290ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (297ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:21 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 15 seconds with dusk around 8:52 pm, which is one minute and 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south-southwest (193ยฐ) at an altitude of 30ยฐ from the horizon, 228,302 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:34 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 70 degrees. The dew point will be 56 degrees. There will be a west breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 35 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

I got my teeth cleaned. ๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿฆท๐Ÿค“ It was relatively painless, and I didn’t get called out that badly for being as bad at flossing and brushing as I have been this past summer. I’ve been a bad boy, but when you work remotely, nobody knows if you have dirty teeth or don’t use deodorant — and unless you have a zoom meeting they don’t know if you don’t shave, wash, or comb your hair.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 57 degrees at 3am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 31st. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. West wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was very sticky. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 47 occurred back in 1987.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 60 at 8am. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 61 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 82 degrees.

This weekend I’ll probably stay in town. ๐Ÿฆ‰ย I have some things that I need to do in town, and I might take the following week off for work, for some kind of real summer vacation. No idea where I will go, although I’m leaning towards the Finger Lakes. Yeah, I’m hardly excited about visiting state parks with all the social distancing, but it would be nice to set up camp for the week, and just be able to hang out at the National Forest all week, doing some hiking, fishing, and paddling on some of the lakes.๐Ÿšค๐Ÿšถโ›บ I was thinking originally about going to the Western Adirondacks and Saint Lawrence County, but I’m getting tired of the Adirondacks after my “workacation” up there to beat the heat for so much of the summer.

Looking ahead, there are 14 weeks until Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:14 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny skies, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 30 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 53 degrees. We hit a record high of 75 back in 1990.

Saturday's fire

July 10, 2020 Night

Good evening! Rain and 74 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a east breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 71 degrees.

Back home from the Green Mountains. ๐Ÿก It was nice to get away and avoid the heat and humidity but I didn’t feel like camping in the rain โ˜” and it looked like all Saturday would be rainy. While it would be nice to have the day off from work when I had more time to play around in the mountains Saturday didn’t look very nice so I came home. I really liked that campsite down by the Deerfield River swimming hole ๐ŸŠ but it’s not normally easy to get unless you go up there midweek.

I didn’t like how much litter ๐Ÿšฎ and toilet paper flowers I found up there but I tried to clean things up to the best of my ability. I didn’t take home the junk tire or the multiple bags of garbage I found dumped back in the brush but I did burn and pack out cans for recycling from the one bag of litter I found out front. โ™ป Campsite is a lot cleaner than when I found it.

The drive back home was uneventful ๐Ÿš˜ started to rain hard as I left but it helped with the very wash board Somerset Road. The rest of the trip was quiet except for getting onto the Molly Stark Highway at rush hour – kind of busy. ๐Ÿšš ๐Ÿš™

The Hoosick Valley was a bit pungent of cow manure, ๐Ÿ’ฉ they were spreading it on hay fields before the rain probably so it soaks into the ground good and to keep the slurry tank from overflowing should we get a ton of rain. ๐Ÿฎ

It was odd driving past the state employees overflow parking lot ๐Ÿ…ฟ and seeing it all barricaded and closed but I’m guessing it’s not needed or used and the shuttles aren’t running ๐Ÿš with most state workers telecommuting during the pandemic.

Tonight will have showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. ๐ŸŒง Low of 71 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 72 at 11pm. ๐Ÿ–๏ธ East wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. In 2019, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It became very sticky as the night progressed. It got down to 71 degrees. The record low of 48 occurred back in 1986.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 67% illuminated. The darkest hour is at 1:01 am, followed by dawn at 4:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:28 am in the east-northeast (58ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 24 seconds. Sunrise is 45 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:10 am with sun in the east-northeast (65ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 15 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after noon. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a high of 88 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 73 at 9am. South wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It became humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1936.

In four weeks on August 7 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (293ยฐ) at 8:07 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 26 minutes and 10 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had humid, partly sunny, thunderstorm and temperatures between 84 and 69 degrees. Come August we loose daylight in the evening quickly. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 102 degrees was set back in 1918.

Listening ๐Ÿ‘‚ to the rain, I’m glad I’m home at camping in wet weather isn’t much fun. Just everything gets wet and smokey. I still should plan on taking a summer vacation ๐ŸŠ in a few weeks and with remote work not expected to end anytime soon I have plenty of opportunities to head back to the Green Mountains or anywhere else I have cell service and work remotely from there.
