I’m increasingly worried about the weekend forecast 🌦️

I mean it’s good that we are finally getting caught up on the rain and the mountains are starting to look super green again after last night’s rain. Still I wish it would stop and get hot out for the holiday weekend for swimming up at the Potholers. I guess every weekend can’t be beautiful.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Clearing skies to the north and 59 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. 🌥 There is a west breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 58 degrees. The skies will clear around 10 am.

This morning I have black beans simmering on the stove. 🍲 Out doing my morning walk 🚶, I got a fairly early start and I already plan to double check and make sure the beans are done before leaving for work. 🤯 I actually want those black beans for a cold lunch today, they are perfect 👌 with a good chopped red onion 🧅 like the type they have at salad 🥗 bars. Red Kidney beans are good but better hot, except for as more of a dessert or side mixed with a little pure maple 🍁 syrup. Yum. 10 ½ miles walked yesterday. 👣

Today will have a slight chance of showers before 8am. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 76 degrees at 5pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 4th. The record high of 94 was set in 1892.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.6° from the due south horizon (-0.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:52 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (296°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (303°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 27 seconds with dusk around 9:08 pm, which is 29 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:54 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 57 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 15 hours and 20 minutes of daytime, an increase of 33 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 53 degrees at 4am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 1st. Maximum dew point of 57 at 6pm. Light and variable wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. On this day in 1966, the United States Supreme Court rules in Miranda v. Arizona that the police must inform suspects of their rights before questioning them. 👮 Also in 1970, “The Long and Winding Road” becomes The Beatles’ last U.S. number one song. 💿 And in 1977, Convicted Martin Luther King Jr. assassin James Earl Ray is recaptured after escaping from prison three days before.

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. 😕 Saturday, a chance of showers between 8am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 10am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 60 at 7pm. For Juneteenth, scattered showers especially late, partly sunny looking at high of 78. Typical average high for the weekend is 80 degrees. Kind of a cool weekend ahead.

I am chewing over what the best days to head out of town. 🏕 I was originally planning on taking off Friday and Tuesday for the long weekend, as I want to get up to Piseco-Powley Road early enough to get the House Pond Campsite if at all possible. But now I hear a rumor that there may be session next week, so maybe I won’t be able to take off Tuesday. Thursday now looks better.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Primary Day 🗳️ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. I’m not sure if that’s right, it might be the following week? Not sure but there is no Democratic Primary in my town so nothing for me to do except maybe make maps up after the Conservative Highway Superintendent primary results, although with such low turn out unlikely to be very interesting. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 82 and 47 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1953.

Powley Bridge

I can’t breathe! 🌫️

For somebody in relatively good health, the unhealthy smoke filled air hits you when you step outside but I can only imagine how it can feel for people with asthma, breathing problems or a weak heart. I heard the cows aren’t loving the smoke either, they breathe in a lot more air then us humans.

Good morning! What day is it? A smoggy Day, of course. Canadian wildlife smoke, smog and 47 degrees for the morning walk out by the Elm Ave Town Park. ⛅ There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

Out walking 🚶 early this morning, I figure before traffic and the smog gets worse. Plus it might be another long day at work and I want to get in at least six miles today, just like I did yesterday despite the late night, smog and much needed rain. ☔ Already the AQI is above 150 and today may be worse for air pollution then yesterday. It’s a bit hard to breathe at times at least you have to work harder but I figure the added strain on my heart ♥ is better than getting out of the habit of exercising. Most other people are inside this morning. Not a lot of walkers or joggers out today.

Woke up last night after the rain ☔ and got a deep breath of the smoke and coughed a bit. I guess it’s something people get used to, these levels of air pollution weren’t uncommon in big cities years ago or even Albany on hot summer days. But usually the heat and humidity hits you more when the air quality is bad. Especially now that the sun is rising as is the mercury you can smell the on smoke on the air. Kind of like wet campfire.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3pm. Widespread haze between 7am and 2pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 71 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around May 16th. Maximum dew point of 49 at 9am. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1999.

Yesterday session ended about 7:40 pm so I got stuck waiting for the 8:15 bus 🚏. It wasn’t bad in the sense it gave me time to walk some laps in the Capitol while I waited for the bus. Ended up doing a little more then six miles yesterday 👣 mostly because I did a midday walk on the Plaza to take in the air pollution and then laps in the office 🏢 in the evening and later in the Capitol. I hate to break the pattern. It was better to walk inside in the evening as it was raining by the time I left and it was so smoggy out downtown and everything stunk like wet wood on the campfire. I wonder how much of the summer we will be dealing with bad air quality locally. I’m hoping tomorrow is the last day of session, though I’m prepared with one more set of dress shirts and pants if necessary for Friday and can press another shirt and pants into service or necessary or find time to do a load of wash at laundromat on Saturday, not such a thing is likely in my mind but it could happen. I’m ready for casual dress and 9-5 at work again.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:55 pm with sun having an altitude of 70.1° from the due south horizon (-0.7° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for a chance of rain 🌧 and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 15 minutes of daytime, an increase of 56 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 49 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 19th. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 61 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1951.

On this day in 1965, the Supreme Court of the United States hands down its decision in Griswold v. Connecticut, 💏effectively legalizing the use of contraception by married couples. An important decision but has been whittled down a lot since Row was overturned. I don’t like the celebration or promotion of abortion by Planned Parenthood and the alike but I don’t think the Supreme Court should have overturned that decision. Somethings should be condemned but kept private, civil matters.

The weekend has slid downhill a bit. 😕 Saturday, a chance of showers after 8am. Partly sunny, with a high near 72. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 54 at 7pm. Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 58 at 8pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 78 degrees. Still think it might be good for the Gas Up with Dad on Saturday ⛽ and doing some overnight hammock camping 🏕 and then a second day at the Gas Up, followed by hiking at Thacher Park. 🏞

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Summer ️⛱️ when the sun will be setting at 8:38 pm with dusk at 9:11 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 70 and 51 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 97 back in 1938.

Fishing

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. 🌄

The countdown to summer continues. Going to relatively mild today but certainly not summer like. I’m just waiting for black fly season to be done. And water temperatures to be a bit warmer.

Cloudy and 50 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☁ There is a south-southwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃.

Not so cold this morning. 🍃 Going to be pretty nice by afternoon. Too bad I’ll be stuck in the office 🏢 most of the day. Walked 9.2 miles yesterday and 12.3 Sunday. Lots of steps but it’s been nice. Didn’t do the twenty mile hike on Sunday but it was a busy weekend.

This morning I am reheating the queche I made up on Sunday 🍳 and froze. Took out a slice from the freezer last night, plan to add some kale, mushrooms, and tomatoes as apparently I need more of them then it already has. 🍅 As they say, the more fiber the better. And some carrot 🥕 slices after breakfast. Black coffee ☕ from reheated coffee grounds plus a little fresh coffee, as I’m trying to cut expenses with coffee being so expensive these days. Eggs 🥚 are a good all morning breakfast, especially blended with lots of fiber.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 78 degrees at 2pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 9th. West wind 8 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, and we had an thunderstorm ⛈ in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1991.

Finished up the updated maps for Save the Pine Bush 🦋 kiosk yesterday at the Lupine Festival this Saturday. I reached out to Lynne about getting the rest of the material for the display. I like tabling, leading hikes, doing maps and research but not so much public hearings especially with the jackals in the press 📰 just looking to twist your words for speaking what you think. At this point in my life, I hate politics, I’m more focused on what is right for me.

Not a pay week this week 💸 but I think it’s a pretty three paycheck month. I’m doing my best to keep expenses down but it’s tough in these inflationary times we all live in. I’m planning on saving a little money this money in my savings account for the first time in years, as interest is up and I know some point in the future 🔮 I’ll have to replace Big Red.

No tax refund for me. 💵 Oh well, not a big one, I was planning on applying any of what I thought to be a $150 refund to next year’s taxes. Didn’t owe anything either. Somehow I made a math error in calculating the amount I was liable for. 🧮 My calculated income was right but I must have read the tax table wrong. I’ll go over my form with the reconciliation statement but there is nothing further for me to do. It’s so stupid to have to file 📂 taxes when the government already has the data on their computers.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 66.4° from the due south horizon (-4.4° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look out for a chance of rain 🌧 and temperatures around 69 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 4 seconds over yesterday.

School 🚸 budget vote today, I’ll probably go after the evening walk 🚶 as then I’ll avoid the crowds and morning traffic as the polls are open until 9 pm and I’m usually in bed 🛏 before then. School Board elections are more rigged then most but it’s the one chance you have to vote against government spending. I also should get milk 🥛 this evening which I keep avoiding because frankly I’ve gotten into drinking my coffee ☕ black.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 29th. North wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 50 degrees. The record low of 30 occurred back in 1959.

Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Maximum dew point of 52 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 73 degrees.

May 12, 2023 Morning

Shift it up into overdrive and enjoy the nice weather 🏖

Just watch out for the black flies and the bad drivers whose minds have already shifted to the weekend.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Partly cloudy ⛅ and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 49 degrees.

Not such a cool morning for the walk 🚶 but then again it will be in eighties later on in the day. 11 ½ miles walked yesterday with similar hopes for today, assuming that I get out at lunchtime. I wish my bicycle 🚲 was finished it would be a nice day to ride to work.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 82 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 24th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 9am. No complaints about the humidity today. Light and variable wind becoming west 9 to 14 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 87 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 1881. There was a dusting of snow in 2020.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.5° from the due south horizon (-5.3° vs. 6/21). At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 12 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 16th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 8pm. West wind 3 to 8 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It became somewhat humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 2020.

There was a dusting of snow in 1953.❄

As I mentioned yesterday, I have this crazy 🤪 idea of spending Saturday night in a hammock in the wilderness though I’m not set on it as it’s going to be a busy weekend with work, getting things ready for the Pine Bush booth, the truck and other projects. Next weekend is thr Lupine Festival so that will be Saturday. 🦋 Following weekend is Memorial Day Weekend but between the black flies 🐜, work and crowds I doubt I’ll be heading anywhere.

Looking ahead to Sunday, cooler but mostly sunny, ☀ with a high near 66. North wind around 11 mph. Maximum dew point of 35 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until National Nude Day 👱 when the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm with dusk at 9:06 pm. I was thinking yesterday how much fun the old crocks are down at the swimming hole. 🏊‍♂️ On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 85 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 84 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1995. That’s about as hot as it ever gets in Albany as I don’t think their thermometer at the airport can read three digits, or so it seems it hasn’t since 1953. But it’s an El Niño year so maybe the baby 🤱 boy will change his mind.

Hour Pond Mountain and Blue Mountain

May 11, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday.

The sun is rising and I’m out walking. It was dark last night by the time I returned home from Five Rivers. Thought I would do like ten miles but it ended up being a hair over nine.

Still feels a bit cool out this morning. Sunny and 49 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌞 Calm wind. Then again do I really want to wake up and be Godsmacked by the humidity? Those days aren’t certainly far off. There is less than a month until the legislative session is done. I’m already thinking about heading up to the Potholers come the Juneteenth weekend.

Hazy this morning 🌆 still from the Canadian wild fires. With the more stagnant air expected to move in both Western NY, along Lake Ontario and Downstate will have air quality alerts ⚠ today. I wonder how long before electrification makes air quality alerts less common. Although who knows with the increasing wildfires.

I’m out of coffee in the pot ☕ this morning so I’ll have to make up some more. Going to reheat qieche I made last week and froze. Then I want to leave early enough to walk down to the Park and Ride to catch the express there. 🚏

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 77 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around June 5th. Maximum dew point of 46 at 6pm. Not very humid. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1911. 0.5 inches of snow fell back in 1907.❄

I have my repaired tire back and my suit jackets are getting dry cleaned. 🧑🏻‍💼 It’s a casual dress day at work and I expect to be done by five so I’ll take the express bus 🚍 both ways. Making a fresh pot of rice 🍚 up this morning and probably will have with salmon 🐠 later on then head to the park 🏞 to walk until dusk. I’ll put the tire back on Sunday after washing and lubrication.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 65.2° from the due south horizon (-5.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:26 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (289°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (296°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:07 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 12 seconds with dusk around 8:38 pm, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:18 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 69 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 31 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 14 seconds over yesterday.

The Nature Bus to Thacher Park returns in two weeks 🌲 during Memorial Day Weekend. No schedule yet but I expect that probably in the next few days it will be released. It’s a fun way to spend a Saturday that doesn’t cost anything.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 54 degrees at 3am. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around June 2nd. Maximum dew point of 49 at 8pm. West wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies. It got down to 44 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1969.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 76. North wind 6 to 14 mph. Maximum dew point of 53 at 7am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 68. Maximum dew point of 36 at 9pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 71 degrees.

Pretty sure that Sunday I want to hike Blodgett Hill 🚶 for another twenty miler but I could change my mind. Going to be a nice weekend for sure. Saturday most certainly I’ll be working.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until 9 PM Dusk 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. On that day in 2022, we had rain and temperatures between 69 and 60 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 76 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1918.

 Trees

Good Evening – August 15, 2021

Good evening! Sitting on the Kane Firetower waiting for the sun to set 🗼

Partly clear and 69 degrees at the Kane Mountain Firetower. Light breeze. The dew point is 51 degrees. A very clear evening 🌃 for sure, good for watching the sunset. With the low dew point I can easily see the other side of the Mohawk Valley including some of the silos on the Schoharie side. Also the wind turbines on the ridge outside of the Adirondack Park.

It’s been a nice weekend up north, ☺ with way too many beer boiled clams, sausage and sweet corn 🦪🍻🌽 and swimming 🏊🏻‍♂️ holes and about 25 miles of hiking – well over 15 miles was today alone. Camped at the House Pond Campsite 2 again. Today I hiked from Seeley Road in Knapville to Dexter Lake and then to Spectacle Lake and then to Waters Mill Pond. Then about two hours in the evening cooling off in the Potholers, followed by a sunset hike up Kane Mountain. Now to drive home by 10 pm.

Yesterday, I hiked back to House Pond which had a lot of blow down over parts of the trail. 🎋 There was a bad thunderstorm ⛈ in July that I remember seeing on the news 📰 that caused some big trees to come down, but at least it didn’t wash out the road much or if it did Stratford had already fixed it. Looks like they had to saw and remove multiple trees off Piseco-Powley Road that had came down it and I could hear them cutting downed trees at the hunting camp down the road and I saw them leaving with several pickup trucks full of wood.

Also yesterday I hiked along the Edick Road Snowmobile Trail and then back to Edick Road Campsite #1 out along the ledge overlooking the East Canada Creek, spotting a photographing a doe up close. 🦌 I climbed down the gorge wall and watched the various birds 🐦 in the grass lands along that grassy part of the river. Then more clams, corn and sausage. And back to Potholers.

Friday was even more lazy — it was fairly hot. Many hours reading and learning more about Python, 🐍 and then I hiked to Potholers. 🏊‍♀️ Then after I got back to camp, I swam at the swimming hole across the road from House Pond Campsite 2 until dusk, listening to a podcast, started a fire 🔥 had more clams, 🕹 laid back in hammock until it started to pour 🌧 and then hung out under the tarp as it rained some more listening to podcasts until 11 PM.

Thursday, was a rather late start because it was so humid and I was on vacation and was lazy. I screwed up and didn’t get my turn signal on time for Sandell Farm’s to get sweet corn, and ended up going to Rogers Orchard to get sweet corn and blueberries. 🍎 Then I ended up running to Wally World and forgetting the main reason I wanted to go there — to get coffee. ☕ I like the large coffee containers they have there not just because they are inexpensive on a per pound basis, they make great containers for making ice in for camping. Or “donating” to the state to put toilet paper in the outhouses, to keep the racoons from shredding it. 🚽 I was hoping to check out Willie Marsh 🐸 but I got on the wrong road, so I didn’t go by there. I finally got camp around 12:30, set things up, made my first batch of clams, 🕹 and they were good. Swam in the swimming hole across the way from House Pond Campsite, 🏊‍♀️ which might not be the potholers, but it’s right next door. Sat back in the hammock for a while listening to some music 🎼 and the news 📻, then had a fire. 🔥 The wood sure was wet that first night, and it was a bit smokey until I got it going well.

July 5, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Hottest Time of the Year 😅! This morning ain’t real humid, but you will be feeling it later today. Partly sunny and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 56 degrees.

Today’s plan is to go out to Partridge Run WMA and do some bird watching 🐦 and fishing. 🎣 I plan to spend the bulk of the day out there, although first this morning I want to work on a getting that area compare code up on the blog, so I can start doing size comparisons for future blog posts.

On this day in 1999, U.S. President Bill Clinton imposes trade and economic sanctions against the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. 🤑 Unfortunately, it seems like it was too little to late, as within 2 years we would be at war with them after the September 11th Terrorist attacks.

My exact weekend plans aren’t fully formulated yet, 💭 but I’m leaning towards Piseco-Powley through early Monday, then heading to Spectulator for remote work on Monday and Tuesday, but only if the weather looks nice. It’s been a few week since I’ve gotten out of town, and I kind of want to spend more time camping before summer is done. It’s already July, and it seems like its been difficult to get out of town so far this summer as the weekends have been cloudy and rainy, although I certainly have taken advantage of CDTA Nature Bus service. 👤
