February 21, 2023 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 38 degrees on this Tuesday evening for the walk. ๐ŸŒฅ There is a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. They were talking about rain but I haven’t gotten wet yet. Did rain a bit earlier looking out my office window.

It was a busy day at work ๐Ÿข followed by a busy day of projects at home. But I managed to get in more than 17k steps today. You get the steps in early then there are more opportunities to get steps in later in the day. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain showers, mixing with snow after 9pm, then gradually ending. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 29llgl degrees at 6am. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. West wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -08 occurred back in 1963.

I was surprised to open my mail ๐Ÿ“ฎ and see the State Board of Elections sent me the Albany County Voter File on a DVD ๐Ÿ“€. Didn’t charge for it either. I had assumed that it would be a drop box link ๐Ÿ”— to download. Of course it’s a bit of a problem as my computer no longer had a DVD player installed as my other hard drive is there. I didn’t know people used DVDs with bandwidth being so cheap. I feel silly for only requesting just the county file ๐Ÿ“‚ and not the state. But I only really plan to model on county data and help local candidates this year. Next year I’ll get the state file.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon with 4% illuminated. The Worm ๐Ÿ› Moon is on Tuesday, March 7. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:16 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:45 am in the east-southeast (104ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 30 seconds earlier ggGt porthan yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:24 am with sun in the east-southeast (111ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 4 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 47 seconds over last night.

Working on another mapping project ๐Ÿ—บ for another local environment group. ๐ŸŒŽ This is kind of a fun project looking at potential routes for a bike ๐Ÿšฒ trail. It’s a little different than another one I’m doing with calculating distance of houses from a local hazardous waste site.โ˜ฃ๏ธ Government databases and some statistical programming has gotten so powerful in recent years.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŒฅ , with a high of 41 degrees at 12pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 3rd. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 68 was set in 1997. 14.8 inches of snow fell back in 1893.โ„

This week marks a week until spring ๐ŸŒท though I’m sure it will get cold before then. But who knows it’s been a mild winter. Based on past experiences I don’t think it will get particularly warm out until about two months out from now.

In four weeks on March 21 the sun will be setting in the west (271ยฐ) at 7:09 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 46 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had sunny and temperatures between 63 and 25 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 47 and 28 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 1921.

Looking ahead, tommorow is , Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ is Next Tuesday, First Day of Spring ๐Ÿ’ฎ is a month away, Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ is in 5 weeks, Primary Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 17 weeks, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 4 months, Independence Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 19 weeks, World Population Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ง is in 20 weeks, August ๐ŸŒป is in 23 weeks, World Mosquito Day ๐Ÿž is in 6 months, Halloween ๐ŸŽƒ is in 36 weeks, Average High is 50 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 38 weeks, Election Day ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 38 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 41 weeks, First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ is in 10 months and Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 44 weeks.

 Escarptment on Clear Winter Afternoon

What a week it’s been … ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ“œ ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš’

Over the past week I’ve literally spent 17 plus hours sorting through wet, smokey and increasingly moldy papers trying to save whatever Albany history I can before it’s forever gone. While maybe John Wolcott will never be as famous as Erastus Corning or Nelson Rockeller, the truth is activists like him preserved some of the city’s most important history and lands, raised important questions made a difference again the Democratic machine, often at great personal cost.

While he did pretty well when “Republican” Theresa Cook (ala that time Rezsin Adams ran as a “Republican” for county legislature) was running the county clerk’s office, other times he was attacked tooth and nail for his performance as a title searcher for the county, even though he was probably the best title searcher and researcher of deeds and history the county ever had. I came across his lawsuit today drying out his papers along with the numerous exhibits on Albany County corruption and sneaky misdeeds or the Erastus Corning machine and by that time Jim Coyne’s county operations. The Corning machine was only really interested in punishing male dissidents, they couldn’t see in their minds that women could have any influence of politics. Ultimately it was the federal District Court that sided with him and had him reinstated but he fought for years to get the pension credit he deserved going back to the days when he was a consultant for Fort Orange 787 dig. The Fort Orange file got wetter than I thought but we got it apart drying. It will be saved. And while, maybe the history books write differently, certainly it was John Wolcott who helped to take down Jim Coyne through alerting the FBI to Coyne’s crooked deal over the Knickerbocker Arena, although like with Fort Orange and Paul Huey, the credit can’t necessarily be just his own.

And then as I was going through the papers, putting dried ones away I heard a screech and bang, and a car crashed into the traffic light pole at South Swan and Morton Avenue, causing the 100 plus lb traffic light to break free of the wire. The clearly fleeing car then took off leaking what appeared to be coolant. Police showed up, hauled the broken stop light off the road, talked to the neighbors and took off. Not sure what happened to the fleeting crashed car, I was too busy sorting papers. Albany is going downhill rapidly, things were looking up in the city not that long ago. I’m just glad I’ve been taking the bus there rather than driving especially with the neighborhoods getting so rough. I still remember that last time I walked down to Sheridan Hollow to visit John, a firearm rang out as somebody shot out a car window.

While working on John’s papers, I’ve been going through the EIS for a project in Troy and some Pine Bush issues in Guilderland with some tax data and GIS Mapping. People have gotten to know all the amazing things that I can do and I get more and more requests. It seems like everywhere I’m going I’m getting sucked into fights against City Hall everywhere, me with public records and free software, going up against million dollar reports with expensive professional software, internal only data and decades of training and experience. But if we don’t raise questions and fight development then who will? It’s tough as these professionals have big budgets and skills, but if house wife Jane Jacobs could stop Robert Moses, then so can ordinary people like myself. Not going to win every fight but it’s good to raise questions and stop bad development where we can. Even if it’s a pain to the local Bob Moses of today. It’s important we protect open space. Even if it involves some risk to myself and makes me not trust or respect most government workers.

Beyond all those wet and smokey papers and battling City Hall it’s been a crazy week for sure. The legislative session is wrapping up and I’ve been swamped with work, I was going through agendas for work well into the night on Saturday night. It’s been a crush at work and when I’m not in the office most of the time until late I’ve been drying out papers. I did get some bird watching in at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center this morning – saw a red tailed hawk being harassed by a few sparrows on the way out walking out there. I continue to back up, photograph and store important documents electronically in case of a disaster.

And then I’m also finally dealing with some of my own issues in my life. The counseling I’m getting is helping, it seems consistent with the advice I’m reading from trustworthy sources and publications on the internet. But change comes hard especially with bad habits of both negative thinking and repeated thoughts in thinking I’ve had ingrained for two decades now. I’m trying to change but it’s hard. I’m certainly learning a lot, becoming a better person because of counseling.

And I was doing better until the mixed emotions of Mr. Wolcott’s house fire – grief and sense of lostmy work sorting and carefully cataloging documents would be forever lost. But we saved a lot. But the shock and horror of it all, seeing that house in such disarray and burnt – that only a week ago before the fire when I was sorting and filing papers things looked so different. Plus all that stuff going to the Rensselaer landfill to be buried and forever viewed from my downtown office as a dirt and grass covered hill. Fire can be so bad, especially in the urban areas. Then I saw the other side tonight out in the country, the place I grew up. My parents neighbors, the ones who live in trailers and raise pigs and cows, were having a big ol bonfire, drinking beer burning an old couch, mattress and pallets with lots of black smoke. I’m so jealous of their homestead, even if they are what the government calls poor people who live in rundown trailers and barns. Kind of like that film about Appalachia I’ve been watching. But the country life is a life I’ll get to eventually, saving a bit each paycheck.

… Fire can destroy but it can cleanse too. That’s what my therapist reminds me.

May 30, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Two weeks to Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ . The unofficial end of black fly season, although I tend to think they’re around until July 4th, although come late June it’s mostly mosquitos then July comes around and things aren’t so bad. Rain and 47 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I wanted to walk around to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ this morning before the rain, but it’s already raining and I did not get up early enough apparently. ๐Ÿ˜ด I’ve been bad this weekend about getting started, after getting up at 6:30 AM each day last week, so I could go for my morning walk before heading downtown on the bus. ๐ŸšŒ Memorial Day Weekend will continue to be cold, damp and rainy but the skies will clear tomorrow around 5 pm in time for picnics, although you’ll definitely want a long sleeve shirt. ๐ŸŒญ ๐Ÿ”

Today will rain, mainly after 10am. ๐ŸŒง High of 50 degrees at 4pm. 25 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 28th. North wind around 9 mph. It’s already become a very wet day, and it looks like it only will get wetter. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 78 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 1987.

Yesterday, I was over at the apartment where they are storing the recovered documents for John Wolcott. ๐Ÿ“œ Didn’t find a lot of interesting things, more papers and photos, mostly personal stuff. Important for him, but it wasn’t a lot of great historic value we found yesterday. But I’ve been mostly looking through photos that we’ve been saving by soaking, separating, and drying. ๐Ÿ–ผ ๐Ÿ‘ƒ At least the files don’t stink as much yet, although we are starting to run the clock with the damp weather ๐Ÿ’ฆ and mildew starting to grow on the wet documents. I’m going to head back there later today.

I was worried that the Fairchild Aerial Photos of Albany Pine Bush in the 1920s were misplaced, but Lynne was able to find them. I really want to get a high resolution scan of them, maybe because I’m a bit biased towards them with my love old aerial photos. ๐ŸŒฒ But they can also really tell a story about the Albany Pine Bush and world long gone. The USGS photos taken in the early to mid-1950s for stereographic mapping of the land for topographic maps is great, but it’s from the 1950s, and a lot of land use change occurred earlier then the 1950s in Pine Bush. ๐Ÿ”

While I should have done this a long time ago, ๐Ÿ“ธ I finally took high resolution photos of my guns and their serial numbers, along with various diplomas and certification documents including my truck title an birth certificate, ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐ŸŽ“ and family photos, and put them in an encrypted file both on my laptop and for off-site storage. Just with my ordinary camera. ๐Ÿ“„ This way I figure if I am ever a victim of a natural disaster, be it fire, riot, tornado, flood, I’ll have my photos and important documents backed up, with all the numbers and key information. ๐Ÿ’พ Sure, I’ll probably have to get a new copy of my birth certificate, et. certera at some point but when you have the information it’s easier to get. Data storage is cheap, and while I don’t do the whole cloud thing, โ˜๏ธ off-site is important in case the building I live in is destroyed or my laptop is stolen or damaged. ๐Ÿ”ซ Likewise, with the guns it’s a lot easier to file a police report if you have the serial numbers and photos. Salvaging all those charred documents ๐Ÿ”ฅ really makes me want to be a lot more careful at backing up everything. Plus I’ve purged a ton of paper documents that aren’t relevant anymore. ๐Ÿ—‘ I need to tackle the crawl space and get rid of some worn out clothes and other things this summer. ๐Ÿ‘š โ™ป๏ธ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:54 pm with sun having an altitude of 69.2° from the due south horizon (-1.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (294°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (301°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 8:59 pm, which is 50 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:43 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 48 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 8 mph. Today will have 15 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 23 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain, mainly before 4am. ๐ŸŒง Low of 47 degrees at 9pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 4th. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tomorrow, which is Memorial Day will have a chance of rain before 7am, then a chance of showers, mainly between 7am and 3pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61. ๐ŸŒฆ Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

I had higher hopes about Memorial Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ but it seems like the bad weather will continue until Tuesday when it will get nice. I can work from home on Tuesday, and while I have to work in the office on Wednesday and Thursday, I’m thinking of working from the Speculator area on Friday and Monday, just because there is that great library there and decent places to camp in the area. ๐Ÿ• I am going to hold off on the Potholers for this weekend, although looks plenty warm. I could go for a swim at Speculator Beach.  ๐ŸŠ‍โ™€๏ธ Not sure if I will bring my kayak — my initial feeling is no to that, because I will need the solar power to work. ๐Ÿ›ถ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ when the sun will be setting at 8:34 pm with dusk at 9:08 pm. On that day in 2020, we had cold but otherwise partly sunny day and temperatures between 66 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 79 degrees. We hit a record high of 94 back in 1892. Back before my time, and I suspect yours too.

Grass Along Lake

March 21, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday on this beautiful spring day! โ›ช Next Sunday the Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ . Sunny and 38 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒž Calm wind. Warming up quickly, as we will push 60 degrees later on today. A nice preview of spring, with most of this week having temperatures in the 60s. Just wait until we have days in April where the high is only 40 degrees. But enjoy it for now, while it lasts. 70 degrees Thursday? Possible.

Yesterday was a nice hike up at Five Rivers. Spring peepers are just starting to come out with the ice melting, although they are few and infrequent, and relatively faint. ๐Ÿธ It still has to warm up a bit more before we see them coming out in mass. Made some improvements to mapper on the blog, allowing me to make better looking maps, especially with street maps and contours. ๐Ÿ—บ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 62 degrees at 3pm. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 23rd. Calm wind. I’ll take late April weather at this point. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 78 was set in 1921. 6 inches of snow fell back in 1905.โ„ Not today, suckers.

Going to be a nice day and I’m thinking of spending the balance of the day out hiking and observing nature up at Partridge Run. ๐Ÿšถ Road walks up there this time of year aren’t too muddy, although I expect there to be some around, especially in the hollows. But that’s to be expected, as it’s only late March. Some years there is a ton of snow in late March, although that is less common in recent years as the March climate in Albany is significantly warmer then it once was.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23.1ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:32 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (271ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:09 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:37 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (188ยฐ) at an altitude of 73ยฐ from the horizon, 246,734 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:10 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 54 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 30 degrees at 6am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 27th. Calm wind. In 2020, we had clear skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of 2 occurred back in 1875.

I saw my tax forms were received by state and federal tax departments, so it will only be a matter of time before I get my refund. Not a bad month — I am fortunate enough to be enough below the limit to get the stimulus check, plus a tax refund about the same amount, and it’s a three-paycheck month. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Of course, the aut0 insur3rs are chasing me around the internet reminding me they’d like me to get cheaper insurance by switching to their company and dropping to lower coverage. ๐Ÿš— So that bill is due at the end of month, plus any other repairs or expenses that may occur like if my truck has to be repaired or I probably need an oil change. Rent is going up in May. ๐Ÿ  I can’t wait until I own my own land, but I like my job and the money I make, so it’s better to save for now.

As previously noted, next the Sunday is Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ when the sun will be setting at 7:17 pm with dusk at 7:45 pm. Might be warmer then that. On that day in 2020, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 51 and 30 degrees. There was a record high of 85 back in 1945.

I am still leaning towards taking a long weekend over Easter Weekend to the Adirondacks. ๐Ÿฐ I will take it by ear as the wear pattern could change by then and we get a good snow storm, or more likely it be cold rain. ๐ŸŒง Although Central New York might be a better choice in the sense that there is more good opportunities to trout fish there ๐ŸŽฃ although I kind of like the Adirondacks as it’s more remote, and unlike a campground I can shoot guns ๐Ÿ”ซ , have a big ol’ fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ if it’s not too dry and listen music as loud as I want to.

March 16, 2021 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Who knows how that monster happened to grow that way? It’s parents are frightened, it wishes it would go away. But the taxes keep coming, and they have to be spent on big bulldozers and tanks of cement. Stand by me, and protect that tree from the freeway misery. Take it Malvina! ๐Ÿ‘ท Some of those historical aerial photos I’ve been posting lately are pretty neat. I wish more were georeferenced, and served as WMS or tiles — I guess I could upload more to MapWarper. Six weeks to Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• . Partly sunny and 16 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Things will start to thaw out at around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

A cold start to the morning. โ„ I mean it could be snowing out, but I am not ready for 16 degrees in mid-March. I didn’t have the heat turned up, so it took a while for the heat to kick on last night, so it was cold inside during the middle of the night. Especially after we had a day that hit 70 last week. Yeah, it’s been cold the past few days and I’m ready for spring. I am definitely going out for my morning walk though in a little a bit — there is no wind and it’s sunny enough that I expect the weather to be nice for walking. ๐Ÿšถ I didn’t get to go for my evening walk, because a project came in a seven o’clock and I ended up working until nine, mostly because it was something I hadn’t done in years, I was tired, kept making mistakes and had to back and fix my work. โœ At least working from home, I didn’t have to catch the bus half asleep then stumble back to my bedroom. ๐ŸšŒ

Woke up early this morning with a dream ๐Ÿ’ค about moving out west and getting out of the world of the east with all it’s problems. I really hate living in the city, in the east where everything is so restricted and regulated. I know there are vast places out there, even as close as parts of Western NY and Pennsylvania, and even the Midwest where people don’t spend their lives trying to figure out creative workarounds to problems created or ignored by their government. If you’ve lived in Upstate NY for any time, you know that much of life is about finding workarounds and creative solutions to everyday problems that shouldn’t exist. ๐Ÿ—ป I am just taken aback by how vast a place like Alaska, or even much of the west really is. Everything just seems so close together, masses of people so hutled together in a little space with homestead and home next to each other due to a lack of space. ๐Ÿ—ฝ I don’t believe the state religion practiced by many that there is no place in world as wonderful as New York, that our state has everything, as that’s a lie, despite what the state uncles want you believe. In a few more years.

Today will have a slight chance of rain and snow between 2pm and 3pm, then a slight chance of rain after 3pm. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 25th. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. That second day of remote work last year was pretty nice. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ’ป Other days were cloudier and colder. โ˜ The record high of 82 was set in 1990. 13.4 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Working on refining that code ๐Ÿ”ข๐Ÿ”  that I posted last night for bulk encoding with the NYS Geocoder. The code I wrote is super simple and works okay for a few addresses but the geocodeAddresses endpoint can take up to 1,000 addresses per call and is much faster then calling the individual endpoint, piece by piece. Also think I want to port it to Python, as this should be simpler, and I need more practice coding in Python. ๐Ÿ I know Python is the language of the future, and I’m much too reliant on PHP which I’ve been using on and off for 20 years, except for the time I was using Perl for everything including CGI. ๐Ÿช Python has those wonderful Qt bindings and is great for scripting in QGIS and writing other graphical programs. uncles want you believe.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:05 pm with sun having an altitude of 45.8ยฐ from the due south horizon (-25ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:26 pm with the sun in the west (262ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (269ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:03 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the west-southwest (255ยฐ) at an altitude of 31ยฐ from the horizon, 252,059 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:04 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and snow ๐ŸŒจ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 58 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 56 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain and snow before 9pm, then a slight chance of snow between 9pm and midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 31 degrees at 4am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 29th. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2020, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -1 occurred back in 1916. Extremely cold days are getting rarer as we head toward April. But that happens every year, and I complain about it. I just I wish I lived in a warmer climate, where winter wasn’t so harsh or long.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, sunny, with a high near 45. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 55. Typical average high for the weekend is 46 degrees. I might head north this weekend, but it might be better to wait until the snow is mostly gone at this point. I am not sure. I also want to take the truck out for a drive this week to see if I notice that squeak I heard the other day. I almost think it was because the window on the truck cap wasn’t closed tightly, and it was super windy on Wednesday. Only going to get warmer it seems as the month progresses, and maybe Good Friday into Easter will be nice and work won’t be so crazy.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 4 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ I am ready for it, and I’m even more ready for the the month of April. But first I should bundle up for my morning walk. ๐Ÿšถ It’s that time.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Pink Moon ๐ŸŒ• when the sun will be setting at 7:51 pm with dusk at 8:21 pm. Albany replaced the Pinkster Festival ๐Ÿ’ฎ with a Tulip Festival ๐ŸŒท in recent years, moving away that part of history, or more likely consolidating the days. On that day in 2020, we had rain showers with cold and cloudy weather 46 and 37 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 91 back in 1962.

September 3, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. A four day work week after a four day Labor Day Weekend well at least for me. School is back tomorrow. ๐Ÿšธ I expect long traffic delays tomorrow, especially on the evening commute and later running buses in the morning. ๐Ÿš Although honestly, Interstate 787 hasn’t been so backed up since they changed the traffic light timing. Two weeks to Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ.

Otherwise despite being September expect an almost summer like day. Partly cloudy and 62 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 57 degrees. Pretty much what you would expect for early September which should dry up yesterday’s rain.

Today will have patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 79 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 27th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 1pm. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. It was very sticky. The high last year was 94 degrees. The record high of 100 was set in 1953. Last recorded high above 100 in Albany.

Being that I was out Friday I expect a busy day at work. ๐Ÿ’ผ But I’ll get caught up on things. I uploaded some new maps for the blog but I’m not sure when I’ll have time to post them. ๐ŸŒ Maybe I’ll go down to the library after work to do that. ๐Ÿ“š

The sun will set at 7:26 pm with dusk around 7:54 pm, which is one minute and 44 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 59 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 63 degrees at 4am. Seven degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 6am. South wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2018, we had rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 37 occurred back in 1946.

Cool but sunny early September weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 74. Maximum dew point of 53 at 4pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 70. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6am. Summer has called it quits early this year. Typical average high for the weekend is 76 degrees.

I was reading more about the logging capacity Renology MPPT solar controllers โฌœ and the logging library that they have for using with Linux and the Raspberry Pi.๐Ÿ”ฃ I’ve been talking about building a smart relay between the starting battery and accessory batteries in my truck – the solar controller could be a good source of information to feed into it. ๐Ÿ”Œ Plus a simple text based interface probably would be the best way to get information as I don’t have room on my phone for any more apps. ๐Ÿ“ฑ

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ when the sun will be setting at 7:01 pm with dusk at 7:29 pm. On that day in 2018, we had humid, mostly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 82 and 67 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 72 degrees. We hit a record high of 89 back in 1942.

It looks like my autumn road trip will be starting in about a month ๐Ÿš™on October 5th. The first day I will drive down to Tonawanda Penna and camp overnight then head down to Cannan Heights West Virginia via Interstate 99 and US 220 and another connector road to Corridor H. I may sped a good portion of my week there this year, as I like it down there.

Looking Out a Deep Bay

February 19, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Back to work after the Presidents Day Holiday the first post 5:30 PM Sunset of the year ๐ŸŒ†. I’ll try to stop my Donald Trump obsession for a few hours today. Mostly sunny and 10 degrees in Delmar. Doesn’t feel that cold this morning. Crisp yes, but not that cold. Maybe because I left the heat turned up a bit last night. There is a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at Thursday around 7 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 25 degrees at 2pm. 11 degrees below normal. Northeast wind 6 to 14 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. It is still winter, as they say. At least for a few days before the big warm up starting Thursday. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 44 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1981. 11.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.โ„

The sun will set at 5:32 pm with dusk around 6:01 pm, which is one minute and 17 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 22 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 10. โ˜ƒ๏ธ There will be a west-northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 8 degrees at 5am. 10 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around 9 at 6pm; Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening. Cold but not outrageous for late February. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 43 degrees. Very mild last year, saved on those hefty heating bills. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1966.

Tomorrow will snow, mainly after 5pm. Increasing clouds โ›…, with a high of 29 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees below normal. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1930. 11.2 inches of snow fell back in 1977.โ„

I went over to John Wolcott’s house and we spent some 4 hours going through the files yesterday. ๐Ÿ“œWe got through one of the Albany boxes, on to the next one the next time I get over there. Probably not this week as I expect a fairly busy week with maybe some more snow tomorrow but after the snow it will warm up.

I much preferred taking the bus into the city and walking over to his house,๐ŸšŒ especially yesterday with the lack of traffic due to the holiday. No worries about driving myself in city traffic plus I got a little walk. The Sheridan Hollow bridge on Henry Johnson Boulevard was very well plowed which was nice. ๐ŸšถI was worried about it being snow covered and slippery but the city kept it plowed.๐Ÿงน

After visiting Wolcott’s house, I walked down to the library and returned my library books and played on the internet for about two hours, grabbing a few more videos and uploading some maps and content for my blog.๐Ÿ’ป Trying to have more useful and interesting content for the blog. Kind of cold walking down there. I wasn’t prepared, not bringing gloves as it wasn’t that cold earlier but the wind picked up and mercury dropped.๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Came home, dimmed the lights and watched a few YouTube videos that I had previously downloaded. ๐ŸŽฅ It actually was pretty cozy as I have my blaze orange hoodie and I turned up the heat earlier knowing that it would be getting colder outside. It’s funny how it always either chilly or too warm in my apartment, it seems like the thermostat always under or overrides. I am quite happy with how my lighting system works in my apartment although I am not happy with how much power the relay uses when deactivated – nearly a watt. ๐Ÿ”ŒI guess it’s probably the built-in power supply that operates the opto-isolator and other components. But at least my bedroom is nice and bright in the mornings even when the sky is kind of dark – and things dim nicely when it’s time for bed.โš™๏ธ

Tomorrow is the Save the Pine Bush dinner, with the all star cast of Ward Stone and Keith Shue talking about the cogeneratiom plant ๐Ÿญthe state wants to build inside the old ANSWERS incinerator. Plus good lasagna as Save the Pine Bush celebrates it’s 41st birthday. Cake too.

I am continuing to really enjoy water with apple cider vinegar in it, although I have to careful about enjoying it with moderation.๐ŸŽ A drop of it makes the water a wonderful apple flavor and a bit tart, with zero calories which is good because I drink too much milk and not enough water at home. But I did notice that my gums feel a bit sensitive from the acid and maybe it’s upsetting my stomach a bit. But it is so delicious. And cheap. I bet that $2 bottle will last for several weeks.

I’ve long been enjoying frozen fruit as an inexpensive and relatively healthy treat before bed, and sometimes a few cheerios to boot.๐Ÿ’ I don’t have candy or cookies in my apartment ๐Ÿšซalthough I might have some up camping come the summer, although I could also see eating more fresh fruit such as apples and bananas and things like raisins at camp. I’ve also quit drinking alcohol for the most part because it’s so expensive and unhealthy, although I could see getting a 30 rack for camp come the summer. I’m no health expert but if I can find tasty things that are inexpensive and easy to cook I’m all for them. I also always try to include a large portion of vegetables in nearly every meal.๐ŸŒ

Right now, a split verdict on the weekend. ๐Ÿ˜• Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 42. Sunday, showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 45. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees. Still warming up a bit everyday now until we reach that big 83 degree mark in July.

Saturday is the Save the Pine Bush hike that I’m leading. It should be a good hike or more like a ski.ย โ›ทย Looks like a nice day. After the hike, I’ll probably go out for a walk on my own for a couple of hours until dusk. I’m thinking it might actually be really good weather for skiing this time. We will see for sure. My ski boots are fixed but maybe I should glue my ski tips, as they are also fraying.๐Ÿ‘ข

In four weeks on March 19 the sun will be setting at 7:06 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 33 minutes and 55 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had cold, sunny and temperatures between 35 and 15 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 46 and 27 degrees. The record high of 78 degrees was set back in 2012.

Looking ahead, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 21 weeks and Election Day 2020 ๐Ÿ—ณ๏ธ is in 89 weeks.
