Snow flurries around this Tuesday morning ๐ŸŒจ

Up bright and early again this morning. Oatmeal Pancakes at five o’clock with cranberries, shredded oranges and bananas topped with maple syrup and cherries. A good sugar rush to start my day. It’s nice that with the new smoke detector it doesn’t set it off even when I send a big cloud of smoke up overheating the olive oil on griddle. Photo-electric detectors are good if you are annoyed about the alarm going off every time you cook. That and use avocado oil, you’ll produce a lot less smoke if you a bad cook like me.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Snow flurries glitter down from the sky as I sip my coffee โ˜•, its around 30 degrees in Delmar. โ„ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ Going to be decently warm come mid-day, figuring we are in the second half of December. Going to ride to work ๐Ÿšฒ, hopefully there won’t be a lot of damage to the rail trail from yesterday’s flooding.

Not a lot cooking up this morning ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ besides pancakes. Used up the last of the cranberries with a banana and a whole orange mixed with some whole-wheat flour, egg and some baking soda to make the pancakes, ๐Ÿฅž topped with cherries and syrup. ๐Ÿ’ Last night I enjoyed Cajun 15-bean soup, with lots of carrots and celery, and fresh rye bread, which actually is a mixture of rye and whole-wheat flour, as I don’t have white flour to use with the rye. ๐Ÿž Came out pretty good, very dark in color and rich in flavor as I used red onions. Also some vital wheat gluten was added for texture, and obviously dill weed which is neccessary for rye bread. Maybe the next result is pumpernickel, although I guess in that case it would be truly whole-grain rye, which is pumpernickel not the blend between medium rye (partially refined rye) and whole-wheat. I am happy, and if you don’t like it, don’t break into my apartment and eat my bread.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers, mixing with rain after 9am, then gradually ending. Partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 38 degrees at 10am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 17th. South wind 9 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 54 was set in 1895. 7.8 inches of snow fell back in 2008.โ„

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:53 am with sun having an altitude of 24° from the due south horizon (-46.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (230°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (238°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:25 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 24 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south-southeast (157°) at an altitude of 43° from the horizon, 226,942 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 34 degrees. Breezy, 16 mph breeze โ›… from the northwest. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 6 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 9 seconds over today.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 24 degrees at 1am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 13th. Maximum wind chill around 21 at 6am; Northwest wind 7 to 13 mph. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 23 degrees. The record low of -19 occurred back in 1951.

Today in 1974, Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as Vice President of the United States ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿผ under President Gerald Ford under the provisions of the 25th Amendment to the United States Constitution. ๐Ÿ“œ His appointment was controversial, and what should have been a swift confirmation process turned into a protracted and grueling inquiry into the extent of the Rockefeller fortune and its hidden influence. ๐Ÿ’ต Basically he handed a stack of cash to anybody who got in his way as Governor of New York over his 15-odd years in the position. Which is why he always got his way and built so many big things, including the Empire State Plaza and World Trade Center.

Looks like great weather leading up to Christmas ๐Ÿคถ. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 37. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 41. Christmas Day — Monday, Partly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 36 degrees. And the days running up to the Christmas holiday will be as follows — Thursday, mostly sunny, with a high near 36. North wind 10 to 13 mph. Friday, sunny, with a high near 33.

After chewing it over for a while, I decided to take off Thursday and Friday to head out to Madison County, likely for four days. ๐Ÿ• While I’ll need to camp in two different locations unless I go down to Sherburne to get a permit, I could either go out to Cazenovia or Brookfield or stay part of the week at Cherry Ridge and the rest at the horse camp. Got to watch out for snow, though it doesn’t look like it’s going to be much of a problem though there could be a dusting or even an inch or two after the snow showers come rumbling through today, and it’s not going to be much above freezing in coming week. ๐ŸŒจ Going to work from home tomorrow I think so I can run to the store mid-day and fill the propane tank and get any other needed supplies for camping. Plan to drive home on Christmas Day for Christmas dinner with the family. ๐ŸŽ„ ๐Ÿ‘ช ๐ŸŽ…

One option I’m seriously looking at is on Friday ๐Ÿšฒ riding more of the Canalway Trail, this time from Canastota up to the area around Rome, maybe Durhamsville depending on the time. I think the trail will be free of snow by then, though Friday might be a bit chilly though sunny and shouldn’t be so bad with gloves on. Or I could hike around Stoney Pond or if I decide to spend time at Charles Baker, then I could ride the roads there. ๐Ÿ’ญ Off-road bike riding isn’t permitted in the winter, but road-riding is okay per their website. The road up to Cherry Ridge could be icy, though it’s usually plowed but not sanded, except for the campground which isn’t plowed at all. But as of now, they don’t have any more then any dusting per the web cams and snowfall predictions.  โ›„ Thought about heading further south to Long Pond State Forest, but that’s quite a ways south and west. West Virginia is too far away for four nights, not to mention they have a ton of now.

I am dipping a bit into my time reserve for time next year, โฒ not rolling over the maximum into 2024, but when I thought about it some more, it doesn’t matter as I don’t expect I’ll be taking much time off until late April, which will give me several pay periods to build time back up, plus I get 35 hours of personal time (5 days) on the first of the new year. Starting my new position as Director of Data Services, I am not going to want to miss much work ๐Ÿ‘” as I have much to learn and I want to put in the long hours, to make a good impression in my new position. Not sure how much comp-time I’ll get to use next summer, ๐Ÿ˜Ž though I think there is definitely a possibility of remote work with my new position that is more about working data and running reports โŒจ then working with people, or so I think. I don’t know, I haven’t started the training yet. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿซ Things are getting wrapped up at Research it seems for the year, there is a handful of projects outstanding in the Production Book but I’m not worried as the year comes to close.

It will be four nights out camping this week leading into Christmas, ๐Ÿ• then I have off Christmas Day to visit with the families and Boxing Day is also a holiday at my company. ๐Ÿ˜€ Then it’s three days of work, but I”m thinking of potentially working from home that Friday leading into the New Years Weekend, so I can leave early and set up camp in Rensselaerville and do a three-night trip there through New Years Day. Depends on how much snow we get the second half of next week. โ„๏ธ Really hard to say. Lots of winter camping this year, but it’s been so mild. Come January though I’m not planning anything until at least mid-month with Martin Luther King Day but even that’s uncertain — and as I noted, I’m not sure if I will take any time off from work for trips until April with my new position getting underway. Might be a busy summer too, but I’m thinking at least part of the time I will be able to remote work ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ป so I could extend trips by working part of the time from camp and/or the Speculator and other other libraries.

Looking ahead, next Tuesday is Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ when the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. Days are getting longer. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 30 and 16 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895. Before my time, lol ๐Ÿ˜‚.

Another work week draws to a close with the holiday party today ๐Ÿคถ

One week until the start of the Christmas Weekend and two until New Years Eve Weekend. Both weeks will be abbreviated as I plan to take off next Friday and the following Monday and Tuesday after Christmas where I work are holidays. Lot of work projects on my desk as I pack up my office and get ready to do a trip out to Madison County next week. Today is Bill of Rights Day and also the 56th anniversary of the Silver Bridge Disaster down in Point Pleasant, WV.

Good morning! Happy Friday. Only two more left this year. Mostly clear at the freezing point ๐ŸŒ… in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Going to be a nice day. Will be a bit cold for riding into work but I’ve done it in much colder weather for sure. Time goes by so quickly it seems.

The ride to work ๐Ÿšฒ was pleasant and if leave early from the party ๐ŸŽ‰ I’ll be able to ride home after getting a beer ๐Ÿป at City Beer Hall. I haven’t decided what’s for dinner tonight, last night fried up some left over riggis from last week’s Sunday dinner with corn, butternut squash, tofu, mushrooms and onions. Not too bad. Had some more of that rye bread I made up. Maybe I should stop frying things up, but it’s so good especially with some spices, and a little avocado oil isn’t the most unhealthy thing ever. You need some fats in your diet to absorb fat soluble vitamins, and omega-3 fats are the healthier option to do so.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 50 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 15th. South wind 6 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968.โ„

The cookies ๐Ÿช I baked for cookie share day were kind of disappointing in my book, rather bland and too tart. The whole wheat flour I used was grainy, the stevia wasn’t sweet enough and had an after taste not balancing out the cranberries well. ๐Ÿ’ I need to experiment with other sweeteners like monk fruit, or maybe honey or pure maple syrup, or just plain old sugar. Not everything has to be perfectly healthy, though I don’t want to get in the habit of consuming large amounts of unhealthy sugar, though I guess it’s somewhat balanced by the whole-wheat red flour adding fiber. Truth is I’ve kind of gotten to really dislike the taste of stevia — I first got into it for sweetening lemonade in the summer as a healthy low-calorie alternative to beer while camping, but the after taste it leaves in my mouth is kind of yucky, and I don’t like how it tastes with baking those cookies.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:51 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 14 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the south-southwest (213°) at an altitude of 15° from the horizon, 228,509 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 30 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 34 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. Northwest wind around 7 mph becoming northeast after midnight. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1917.

It’s annoying having that broken burner on my stove, โ™จ๏ธ so I need to get that part this weekend. I am pretty sure it’s a standard 6 inch burner, and I can get that at Lowes for $11 so I am not going to bother my landlord. I’ll replace the drip trays again, which after about 3 or 4 years have burned through again. I really enjoy cooking, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ so I want to make sure my stove is in top shape, especially as I often find myself using all four burners, and that’s the largest burner on my stove.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed under the weight of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Two of the victims were never found. ๐ŸŒ‰ The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge carried U.S. Route 35 over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) deep. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and had been poorly maintained. The collapsed bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge, which was completed in 1969.

Also, today in 2000, was an the end of an era at the infamous Chernobyl Power Plant. Reactor No. 4 was the site of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. โš› Both the zone and the former power plant are administered by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. The three remaining reactors remained operational after the accident; all three were eventually shut down by 2000, and the plant remains in the process of decommissioning as of 2019. Nuclear clean-up is scheduled for completion in 2065.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 45 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. West wind 6 to 8 mph becoming north in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2021. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.โ„

Planning on riding to the French’s Mills ๐Ÿšฒ and maybe the Pine Bush tomorrow. Should be a good day for a nice ride. Also need to put the hub caps back on my truck. I am thinking either Saturday night to go shopping and get the replacement burner or maybe Sunday morning. Depends how tired I am from lots of biking.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely, mainly after 1pm. โ˜” Cloudy, with a high near 47. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

Sunday going to the Nutcracker ๐Ÿ‘ช with the family, that is after going grocery shopping early in the morning. Then probably bake some bread later on in the day. ๐Ÿž And head to bed fairly early.

Looking ahead to longer days and ultimately summer, next Friday is Days are Getting Longer โ˜€๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. By then we’ve already gained almost five minutes in the evening. First full day of winter. But probably won’t feel that way. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 34 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 1990.

 Downtown

Up and in early this morning โ˜บ

A simple morning this morning – cream of wheat, topped with ground up apples, cinnamon, ginger, chia seeds 0 that quinoa I had in the fridge. The ginger really gives a nice kick to breakfast and it’s supposed to help with inflammation but I mostly just love the taste.

Good morning! Rise and grind. Monday’s come back around again. Rain showers and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. The skies will clear around 5 pm.

Like usual I was up early at five 5โƒฃ so I decided to catch the early express bus downtown. ๐Ÿš Maybe the rain would have ended early and I could have ridden home but it hard to say and the rain would have taken off at that nice lubrication I had put on the bike chain yesterday. โš™ Most of the rest of the week will be good for bicycling to work ๐Ÿšฒ plus I need to get to the store and get some garlic cloves ๐Ÿง„ which somehow fell off my grocery list when shopping yesterday. ๐Ÿ›’

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 3rd. Maximum dew point of 56 at 2pm. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southeast in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 66 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2017.

Not the nicest day ever, ๐ŸŒง actually a pretty darn dreary day, but I’m going to try to get in 5,000 steps in before work by waking laps and the stairs at the Empire Plaza. I am up early and if I can’t walk outside, I will definitely try to get my steps inside. ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Tomorrow I figure I’ll ride to work, and the same on Wednesday. Thursday before tripping up to the Adirondacks with my parents, I’ll probably do my usual morning walk or maybe if it’s really nice and I’m up early do a quick ride out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ around dawn.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:48 pm with sun having an altitude of 46.6° from the due south horizon (-24.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:12 pm with the sun in the west (263°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (270°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:50 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:16 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (141°) at an altitude of 17° from the horizon, 226,549 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:51 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 65 degrees. The dew point will be 55 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 2 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

The new data structure is implemented on the blog ๐Ÿ—บ which cuts page loading time, saves a ton of space, eliminates several thousand lines of custom code, and just makes things a lot more pleasant for me on the maintance side, including making it easier to upload new maps. ๐Ÿคท Why did I not implement this sooner? Well I didn’t think it would save so much space, and I was afraid of transitioning over the old content, with all the files that it would involve. Turned out not to be as bad of a conversion as I thought, and the user experience doesn’t change a bit.

Also turned on Google AdSense, with fairly conservative settings. I don’t love having ads on my blog, but it should help with the ever growing hosting bills. ๐Ÿ’ต It wasn’t that difficult to implement in the code, and I’m not running that many ads, so if you don’t scroll through a lot of pages or scroll down far, you might never see them. I don’t like advertising, but you don’t run ads, there isn’t a chance of getting any money at all. The way I look at it — an investment in the future of the blog, and it doesn’t require a lot of work on my part.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 5am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Southeast wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 29 occurred back in 1947.

Thursday going up to the Adirondacks with the folks ๐Ÿ‚ to do some leaf peeping and enjoying the fall foliage. Probably go up to Speculator and then down back around through Piseco-Powley Road or NY 10. Have a picnic lunch. ๐Ÿฅช It will be a nice day with the family, should be a good sunny day ๐Ÿ˜Ž as I can’t do Thursday and Friday looks to be a bit more cloudy. โ›… That said the weekend currently looks great.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 71. Maximum dew point of 54 at 11am. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 55 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees. I kind of would rather go camping during the Columbus Day Weekend, but this one looks so good too. Maybe I’ll do Rensselearville State Forest again. ๐ŸŒฒ That way I can get out to the folks house relatively early, as they’re doing lasagana this weekend. Really looking forward to that.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ when the sun will be setting at 4:36 pm with dusk at 5:05 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 49 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 50 degrees. We hit a record high of 69 back in 1964.

Trees

Not the nicest autumn weekend ever ๐Ÿ‚

That said it’s officially autumn however you want to slice it. Summer is just history and in a day or two it will be more night than day. My mind is totally on West Virginia and the Mountain Laurel of Canaan Heights not that I’ve even taken off those days yet. Or even fully planned a vacation.

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the Nature Bus ๐Ÿš Day! Mostly cloudy and 50 degrees at the Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. The skies will clear Monday around 5 am.

It’s kind of silly how much I love the Nature Bus ๐Ÿ˜ as I could drive to Thacher Park myself and I have a parks pass for parking ๐Ÿ…ฟ but it’s fun as it enforces a schedule and doesn’t cost anything. ๐Ÿ’ต Not going to be a really nice day but I don’t expect it to be a complete soaker either. Going to ride trail for a while ๐Ÿšต then probably hammock before catching the 3:30 back home. If it becomes a soaker there are pavilions and the Discovery Center with the nice porch and wifi to shelter under.

Today will have a slight chance of showers after 2pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 63 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 12th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1895.

This morning I was up and cooking ๐Ÿณ around five like I often do. Two big baguettes ๐Ÿฅ– and chicken and veggies roasting down in the oven. Up top was onion, garlic, and zucchini cooking to be cooked with eggs ๐Ÿฅš and fresh spinach before it goes bad. Used up the last two fresh tomotoes that I had. Nevertheless a good start to the morning. Made some walnut butter ๐Ÿฅœ to spread on the fresh bread – so yummy ๐Ÿ˜‹. Then I did morning walk ๐Ÿšถ. I didn’t sleep great but I have been getting to bed early as it gets dark early.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:49 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-23.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:16 pm with the sun in the west (265ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (271ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:53 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 53 seconds with dusk around 7:19 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the south (170ยฐ) at an altitude of 19ยฐ from the horizon, 228,989 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:54 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 62 degrees. The dew point will be 50 degrees. There will be a northeast breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

I think the evening will end in rain โ˜”. But I have a delicious meal in the fridge ready to go ๐Ÿด and I’ll probably work on the blog re-write. I want to phase in the new data structure for the blog this coming week and start up the ads to cover hosting costs. ๐Ÿ–ฅ And then lights out ๐Ÿ’ก early tonight again.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly before 2am. Cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 53 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 50 at 6pm. North wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 41 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1963.

My blog got approved for Google Ad Sense. ๐Ÿคฌ I don’t love advertising and I’m going to use sparingly, but my hope is to generate about $30 a month from advertising primarily from the map pages, but also some of the archives and maybe the main feed but not right up top. I figure if I can make an average of $30 a month, a third will go to the tax man, then the $20 will cover hosting costs and maybe even cover a bus fare or something like that. I have the code ready to add the advertising to the blog, I am manually placing ads, not in the best positions but in ways that aren’t so obnoxious but do earn a bit in revenue, based on the high number of page views I get from my maps, especially in the summer. ๐Ÿ—บ I figure it’s an incentive to get off my ass and make up more maps.

Looking ahead, there are 6 weeks until Daylight Savings Time Ends ๐Ÿ•’ when the sun will be setting at 5:46 pm with dusk at 6:14 pm. On that day in 2022, we had sunny, warm and temperatures between 71 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 54 degrees. We hit a record high of 76 back in 1994. Those days will be here before you know it.

Some Parts of the Rail Trail Follow Quite Closely to NY 30

As they say, stick in a fork in it ๐Ÿด

That is summer though it could be many things as I was up at five o’clock cooking this morning. Farmers are busy chopping silage and cutting hay and the final days of fresh tomatoes are upon us and it won’t be long before the Adirondacks burst full of color.

Good morning! Partly clear ๐ŸŒ… and 48 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.

So summer is done by any measure today, ๐Ÿ‚with the last full day of summer but already the days have gotten shorter and cooler. Didn’t sleep well last night ๐Ÿ› and I was up a little after five and made oatmeal and pumpkin ๐ŸŽƒ pancakes ๐Ÿฅž. Plus more fresh rice and lentils. The split pea soup was good for lunch and dinner but I figured give it a break and have more with fresh bread tomorrow.

Out walking ๐Ÿšถ around a bit before 6:30 as I was ready to go at that point and traffic is light. Going to ride to work ๐Ÿšฒ but will likely take the bus ๐Ÿš home in the evening as I’ll want my laptop home this weekend to work on the transition to the new data structure, rewrite some of the underlying code and implementation monetization aka obnoxious ads on the maps pages. ๐Ÿ…ฐ๏ธ

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 73 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 20th. Maximum dew point of 54 at 1pm. Light and variable wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 71 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1895.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:49 pm with sun having an altitude of 47.8° from the due south horizon (-23.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:18 pm with the sun in the west (265°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (271°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:55 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:21 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (184°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 231,045 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:56 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 68 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 12 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over today.

The cable salesman stopped by… I told him what I always tell them… ๐Ÿ“ฑ In the era of smartphones I can’t understand why any one would want internet at home. I actually haven’t had my laptop at home in months, and I don’t own a television. It’s funny, they just don’t want to give up on me.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 50 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 46 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1963. Not a real nice night, as I’m bringing my laptop home over the weekend to work on the blog, I will probably not ride home. Tonight, I’m thinking I’ll fry up some zucchuni and vegetables ๐Ÿ† for dinner. Then probably walk down tot the library with my laptop. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ’ป

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 63 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 12th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 4pm. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1895.

Not going to be a weekend to get away and camp. ๐Ÿ• That’s fine, last weekend was nice at Rensslaerville State Forest ๐ŸŒฒ and this weekend is the Nature Bus. I will probably go up to Thacher Park in the morning with Blackie and ride trail ๐Ÿšต‍โ™€๏ธ and maybe hang out in the hammock for a while before heading home, probably before 6:20 PM if the rain starts to push in early. A lot depends on what develops with the tropical storm off the court.

Looking ahead to Sunday, showers likely, mainly after 2pm. ๐ŸŒฅ Cloudy, with a high near 63. Northeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 56 at 2pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 72 degrees. Some models are suggesting even more rain come Sunday. Not sure, only time will tell. Probably just head out to the folks house, after spending some time working on the blog.

Looking ahead, there are 9 weeks until Buy Nothing Day ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm (Standard Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 49 and 24 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 46 degrees. We hit a record high of 70 back in 2014.

Carved

You can just sit there a-thinking on your velvet throne ๐Ÿ’บ

My bed certainly isn’t velvet but in the darkness of the morning feels like it. Some DONOVAN to start out the Tuesday morning it would seem, though not only are the evenings getting darker so are the mornings as autumn approaches in a little over a month. September 23rd at two AM starts autumn. Autumn happens ๐Ÿ‚early on a Saturday.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly cloudy and 56 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. Not the brightest of the mornings, in part due to the clouds. That said with the sun rising now it’s getting brighter ๐Ÿ”† out.

Got bananas ๐ŸŒ at the store yesterday along with frozen fruit and sugar free maple ๐Ÿ syrup so I’m thinking it would be a good morning for pancakes ๐Ÿฅž. Yesterday was eggs and the day before cream of wheat with Greek yogurt and lemon ๐Ÿ‹. It’s good to keep breakfast interesting.

I forgot to put the red kidney beans on the stove ๐Ÿฒ before walking ๐Ÿšถ this morning but they can soak and they’ll cook quicker this evening. With the days growing shorter in the evening it’s not like I have that much time in the evening to ride or hike before it’s dark out.

Today will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 78 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 10am. North wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1916.

Going to ride to work again. ๐Ÿšฒ Fixed that missing bolt ๐Ÿ”ฉ on Blackie ๐Ÿšต rack, turned out all of the braze on bolts are standard M5 Allen bolts and I found a matching one from my old bike. It was nice, I didn’t have to go to the hardware store, got rid of annoying rattle and let me ride to the store and get a lot of groceries. I can’t believe I spent another $60 but I should be good for the week now. Really had that rack and basket loaded down heavy and took it easy over the bumps but I didn’t have any issues.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 59.2° from the due south horizon (-11.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.6 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:10 pm with the sun in the west (281°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (287°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:49 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 2 seconds with dusk around 8:16 pm, which is one minute and 35 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the southwest (221°) at an altitude of 19° from the horizon, 240,454 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:55 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 73 degrees. The dew point will be 54 degrees. There will be a north-northeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 40 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 40 seconds over yesterday.

Last night I went down to the Normans Kill Preserve briefly ๐Ÿž before going to Hannaford to go shopping. I was originally thinking of going to the hardware store and/or shopping on the way home from work on my bicycle, but then when I figured out I could fix my bike without visiting at the hardware store, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ”ง I figured I would just to go to Hannaford after spending some time at the preserve. There was a few blackberries left down at the preserve, but we are starting to get beyond that part of the year.

That was quite the grocery haul ๐Ÿ›’ I had riding in the back of Blackie on my way back from Hannaford. I had to use the bungee cord to keep the load tied down. I had a big bag of onions, sweet peppers, a pineapple, frozen fruit, peaches, beans, yogurt, cottage cheese, spinach, edamame and several other things I can’t remember all tied down. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿฅœ Made for a heavy ride, and I was a bit worried about how the basket would hold up over the bumps, but there was no problem.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 54 degrees at 6am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 12th. Maximum dew point of 55 at 8pm. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became thunderstorm by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 68 degrees. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1988.

Not sure what the plans for this evening, ๐ŸŒ† but gets difficult as the evening are rather dark early, so I probably don’t have time for a ride to Voorheesville. I could do a ride out to Five Rivers if I had a quick dinner, ๐Ÿฆ but I also want to have time to cook up those light red kidney beans so later in the week they can be either a snack or a meal with maple syrup or maybe cooked with eggs. I also want to hard boil some eggs for a quick go to for protein ๐Ÿฅš in the morning or even for the dinner. Wednesday I’ll also ride to work, but come Thursday and Friday ๐ŸšŒ it looks like it will be back to busing it to work, as it will rain. But both days I expect to be able to the take express on in.

Today in 1971, twenty of the Camden 28 were arrested. They were a group of “Catholic left” anti-Vietnam War activists who in 1971 planned and executed a raid on a Camden, New Jersey draft board. ๐Ÿคœ The raid resulted in a high-profile criminal trial of the activists that was seen by many as a referendum on the Vietnam War and as an example of successful use of jury nullification.

Cool almost autumn like weekend ahead. ๐Ÿ Saturday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 74. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 64 at 10am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Maximum dew point of 57 at 11am. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees. Saturday is looking less wet, I’ll have to see which day my parents want to do the clam bake. ๐Ÿฆช

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be the concluding day of calendar summer ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:54 pm with dusk at 7:21 pm. Days by then are much shorter, kiddos back in school ๐Ÿšธ . The air will have the pungently sweet smell of corn silage as they’ll be chopping soon. The boys of fall.

Great Blue Heron

This morning is a drag ๐Ÿฒ

Puff the magic dragon by lived by the sea, and frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee. A dragon lives forever but not so little boys.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. It’s cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ›… Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. Fog around, and it’s in my head this morning and I’m not stoned but maybe I wish I was as I stumble around this morning skipping my morning walk.

So I can get at least some steps in ๐Ÿ‘ฃ taking the long way around the High School ๐Ÿšธ superblock to the express bus ๐Ÿš as I have enough time. Breakfast was a bowl of light red kidney beans with sugar free maple syrup and a little bit of Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. I have a bit of sore throat this morning and maybe that’s my excuse for my dragging ass, though truth be told it’s the gray skies my struggle to recover from summer vacation. ๐Ÿ› I was in bed shortly after 9 pm and slept well but had to run to the bathroom ๐Ÿšฝ a few times during the night as I had a bunch of lemonade ๐Ÿ‹ after my evening bike ๐Ÿšฒ ride to Voorheesville.

Today will have a slight chance of showers before noon, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between noon and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 78 degrees at 12pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 5th. Maximum dew point of 67 at 1pm. Lighyg south wind increasing to 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1949.

If the weather was going to be better today โ›ˆ I would definitely be riding into work. ๐Ÿšฒ It was a nice bicycle commute yesterday, although my ride home was a bit heavy with all that sweet corn ๐ŸŒฝ, zucchini, cucumbers ๐Ÿฅ’ and that watermelon ๐Ÿ‰ I had loaded into the back of my bike. Howard Street does get a bit crazy ๐Ÿš˜ at 5 o’clock but once I hit the bike path under 787 and do the climb out of the valley it’s a bit of serenity. Tomorrow I’ll ride down to the dentist ๐Ÿฆท and then to work.

Yesterday I rode close to 30 miles or maybe more. ๐Ÿšฒ Not sure though I did GPS log it. Sunset is getting earlier ๐ŸŒ‡ and I was running late ๐Ÿƒ after dinner but it was still a great ride. That said my mountain bike is so slow compared to the road bikes and it’s boring ๐Ÿ’ค to ride on asphalt but take it to the places I like to camp โ›บ it’s wonderful and it beats walking ๐Ÿšถ around town. It just annoys me as road bikes fly by on the bike path, and general boredom of the bike path, but I remember it’s a compromise compared to the great places I can get up in the wilderness. I am thinking the gravel/stone dust of Pennsylvania’s Pine Creek Gorge might be fun this autumn.

I’ve been kicking myself for not stopping in Triangle on my way home from the Finger Lakes to get more zucchini and have been desperate ever since. ๐Ÿฅ’ The zucchini I had in the Finger Lakes was so good that all I’ve been dreaming of all week is more zucchini. Fried with onions, some MSG, some pepper and a bit of stevia and olive oil it was so good. Eat way too much but there are worse foods to over indulge in. Sweet corn also for dinner and a plum for dessert. ๐ŸŒฝ This morning as I mentioned it was red kidney beans and syrup, and lunch is going to be onions, rice with peas and lentils and then some edamame thrown in. Haven’t had edamame in a few weeks, and it’s good, mostly because of vacation.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 63° from the due south horizon (-7.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:27 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (286°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (292°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:06 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:35 pm, which is one minute and 22 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:15 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 71 degrees. The dew point will be 66 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 26 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely before 1am, then a slight chance of showers between 1am and 2am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 61 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 13th. Maximum dew point of 66 at 6pm. South wind around 8 mph becoming west after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 63 degrees. The record low of 46 occurred back in 1941.

Another summer weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ– Saturday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 83. South wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 80. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. Typical average high for the weekend is 83 degrees.

This weekend I’m thinking of either riding or driving out to Our Families Harvest farm stand ๐ŸŒฝ in New Scotland to stock up on produce then maybe some mountain biking / trail riding in the Albany Pine Bush ๐Ÿฆ‹, I think that could be a lot of fun. Do it early as I see thunderstorms โ›ˆ๏ธ and rain popping up by afternoon. Then maybe go to see John and get some groceries at the Walmart in Albany. I specifically like those little pearl onions they have, I haven’t seen them at other grocery stores. They’re like candy and you can eat them raw after you peal the outer skin or toss them in a frying ๐Ÿณ pan and they quickly get brown and extra sweet. Maybe head a bit further north in Colonie and do some of the Canalway trail but I doubt it. Quiet day Sunday, maybe Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ and go out and see the folks. ๐Ÿ‘ช

I asked the secretary ๐Ÿ—“ to schedule no meetings for me on Thursday and Friday of next week, lest I want to head up to the Potholers for a long weekend and to ride Piseco-Powley Road on Blackie ๐Ÿšต and camp at House Pond Campsite โ›บ assuming it’s open. I could go for a nice few days at the swimming ๐ŸŠ hole there maybe with some clams again ๐Ÿฆช and tons of fresh farm produce ๐ŸŒฝ ๐Ÿฅ’ ๐Ÿ… ๐Ÿง… to toss in the beer and clam broth. We’ll see, it depends on the weather. I could use some time floating on the tube โญ• and cooling in the Potholers before summer is done. I can’t do the following week as the other director is off. Right now the second half of next week looks good, and we might finally get some warmer and drier weather. One last stand before summer is done. I’m also thinking of seeing if I can work remote or take a personal day that Friday before Labor Day Weekend ๐Ÿ‘ท‍โ™€๏ธ so I can get camp set up early on Friday, then work or have fun as time would allow.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ when the sun will be setting at 7:16 pm with dusk at 7:43 pm. It will mean darker mornings especially for walking ๐Ÿšถ although I should be able to walk for a few more weeks after then at 6:15 as dawn is about a half hour earlier and I do that most of the winter at any rate. The cooler air will be refreshing and help wake me up when those days come.
