Alexia and buying shit on Cyber Monday

Cyber Monday and not having Alexia at home…

I do not have an Amazon account or for that matter internet at home. 💻 I certainly don’t have Alexia to talk to when I’m lonely or to command to buy shit 💩 for me. There is too much plastic crap in the world today, and I’m not talking about the shopping bags that people in Albany are talking about banning.

Technically, I could order things off of the E-commerce websites using my phone 📱 and sometimes I do 🎁 but rarely do I. I don’t like spending money on stupid stuff and Amazon is full of stupid stuff from China that nobody really needs. The sales and the subscription fee makes it so people waste money on the site. 💵 Being that I don’t drive to work, it’s not easy to go to the store 🏬 and buy things except on my weekly trips to the big box. Plus I pay to get rid of any trash I can’t recycle โ™ป so I try to avoid waste as much as possible.

To be sure I sometimes will buy an odd component on Ebay or electronics parts off of Aliexpress. โœ‰ But that’s kind of different because when you order from those sites it can take a while for the products to arrive. And it’s not the instant gratification economy. I like to delay my purchases 🐢, wait for them to arrive and take advantage of delayed gratification.

I did buy something this Cyber Monday. I bought a 12 month certificate of deposit to replace the one that had matured, adding some extra money to it. 🎫 It’s not making a lot of interest but I know it’s locked away for a year where it can quietly grow and I can add more to it in the future. 🔮

Six Weeks Until New Years Eve ๐ŸŽ‡

Those extra cups of coffee did me no good yesterday. Not only did it make it impossible to get to sleep, it contributed to my extreme anxiety I had most of the afternoon. I just kind of wanted to relax to some extra coffee yesterday but I guess I really overdone it. I swear I used to drink a lot more coffee when I was younger, and coffee ain’t as strong as it once was when sipping it, but the after effects are much worse. Between the garlic powder gas and shits, the anxiety and staying up too late, I didn’t get much sleep and sleeping past 6 o’clock is unimaginable in my mind at this point.

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Partly clear and 34 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Not a super cool morning. ๐Ÿ˜€ I could go for a walk but I want to get to the store pretty earlier and my guts are mess after last night I don’t want to risk an accident out walking. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Could be excess coffee of yesterday โ˜• but I think it’s the garlic powder I added to the tomato sauce I had last night, as that previously gave me trouble in West Virginia plus one other time at home. Big bulk container I got from Hannaford, even in moderation it keeps me running to the toilet ๐Ÿšฝ . Could be salmonella or mold growing in the container. I probably should empty it and toss in the recycle bin โ™ป๏ธ before it gets me sick again. ๐Ÿคข

Decided on pancakes this morning ๐Ÿฅž as that’s all I really had left. I was playing with recipes, decided to do ground oatmeal, with one egg, apple cider vinegar and baking soda for levity, and Splenda rather then bananna for sugar. Came out fairly good, little more filling then just ordinary oatmeal-banana pancakes. Topped with shredded apples from the food processor ๐Ÿ heated and cooked down in the microwave, along with chopped bananas. ๐ŸŒ Pretty good.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 46 degrees at 12pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 23rd. South wind 6 to 11 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1921. 4.2 inches of snow fell back in 1914.โ„

First thing this morning is to shower ๐Ÿ›€ and then head over to Price Chopper in Slingerlands for grocery shopping, ๐Ÿ›’ that is once I get my list together. ๐Ÿ“œ I need to get $50 in groceries to use my $5 coupon, though that shouldn’t be hard as groceries are so expensive these days. Only shopping through Friday morning, as I plan to get what I need when heading up to the Adirondacks. Not Walmart on Black Friday, but I don’t think Hannaford will be particularly crowded the day after Thanksgiving. Mostly just restocking the pantry full of fruits and veggies, though I’m also going to get a big bag of frozen salmon fillets as I have that other coupon too. ๐ŸŽซ Eating lots of omega-3 is good.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:42 am with sun having an altitude of 28° from the due south horizon (-42.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:31 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 5:00 pm, which is 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (170°) at an altitude of 28° from the horizon, 226,654 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:36 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 41 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and one second over yesterday.

Been continuing on the Udemy Courses. ๐ŸŽ“ I am on my third course after two courses on remote sensing. ๐Ÿ›ฐ So far done is Remote Sensing with QGIS: Basics of Satellite Imagery Classification and Fundamentals of Remote Sensing and Geospatial Analysis. Been learning a lot. It’s wonderful that my public library ๐Ÿ“š offers these classes for free and you get free certifications ๐Ÿ“„ after you get done watching the classes and doing the quizzes. The most recent one is Spatial Data Analysis with R, QGIS & More which is good but it’s about 7 or 8 years out of date, and doesn’t show a recent version of QGIS and uses the obsolete R library of rgeos rather then sf and terra which is used today. But still it’s interesting and good to learn as a big part of the class is about kriging, which is something I am still struggling to fully understand. ๐Ÿ—บ ๐Ÿ“

Yesterday I checked out the Bethlehem Sportsmart โ›ท and was shocked at the prices of skis, especially ones in good quality. At over $100 for a pair of cross-country skis, I think I’d be best off to get a pair at a retailer, maybe after the holidays, one that fits and works properly for my needs. It was mobbed at the sportsmart, with screaming babies ๐Ÿ‘ถ and children running around. ๐Ÿง’ The skis I have currently are groomed-track skis, which besides being broken, really aren’t good for the kind of cross-country skiing I do that rarely involves following groomed tracks. ๐Ÿค‘ The problem with those skis is they are too fast and sink too deep in unpacked snow, the prior is a particular concern when descending mountains, especially now that I’m close to 41 years old, and crashing with skis may very well mean broken bones. ๐Ÿค• Plus I wasn’t in the mood to spend any money right now, to say nothing about that I’m not sure if it will be a particularly snowy winter. I might just stay closer to home this winter, do more bike riding ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ on the roads. Winter ski season is so short around here, and it’s often quite cold int he winter.

Didn’t end up being able to fix the vacuum cleaner yesterday, ๐Ÿงน turns out that after I got it all apart, then put it back to work, I found out the source of the rattle — bad ball bearing. After fiddling for it for a few more hours, I ended up pulling the motor and any part I could reuse or scrap. โš™ Heck of it is I had it back to together and it was working until it’s started sparking and not working again. โšก Disappointing crap, I bought it only 7 years ago but ever since I got it constantly plugged, burned up belts and malfunctioned. If I get another vacuum, I am going to get a small rechargeable hand held ๐Ÿคฒ one as I don’t really have that much carpet in my apartment and then I can do the stairs and vacuum out the mud and dust from my truck better. I’m just annoyed by all that plastic trash, even I will be able to reuse the switch and cord from the vacuum for camp lighting, ๐Ÿ”Œ and may be able to part out parts of the motor for electronics projects or add to the stack of scrap metal for eventual recycling at the scrap yard. โ™ป๏ธ It wasn’t a real cheap vacuum — it was like $70 or $80 bucks, a Dirt Devil Pet Hair Vacuum but it constantly plugged on wads of hair and dust. I bought it because the reviews were good originally, and I figured a pet hair vacuum wouldn’t clog as much as a standard vacuum. ๐Ÿถ I guess don’t believe the review. I just hate carpet, when I have my own land, I don’t ever want that indoors. Especially not the gross, nasty worn out shag carpet like in my apartment.

The broken vacuum cleaner, the debate in my mind to renew or not renew my certificate of deposit,  the signing of Clean Slate last week, getting my ego knocked down a peg for that messed up background at work, and cold weather ๐Ÿคช plus all that coffee just really got me into a bad place by last night. ๐Ÿคฏ My mind was racing, I just kind of felt sick. The whole thing was stupid, it wasn’t entirely my fault I messed up the background, the researcher and big boss didn’t catch it either. ๐Ÿ’ฃ The vacuum cleaner was cheap shit it never worked right. The truck is going to be fine for another year. Then I got the shits from that garlic powder. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Yuck, I was so sick for a while. Did I mention I burnt my finger ๐Ÿ‘† on the soldering iron when I was working last night. ๐Ÿ˜  I was just so bitter, angry and frustrated all evening. I mean it’s stupid, what happened at work isn’t the end of world, moving to a new department soon, the seven-year old vacuum cleaner was less then a tank of gas these days, my truck will likely make it another year, it’s winter it’s cold but I am still planning adventures, I can get better skis somewhere else, and the coffee and shits will wear themselves off.

But regardless, I had a nice bicycle ride out to Voorheesville. ๐Ÿšฒ The bridge is fully re-opened, they did a nice job, it’s a very smooth ride up and over the bridge. On the west side of the bridge it’s a slight upgrade, but the expansion gaps are remarkably smooth and it’s blacktop, all the more surprising for a “temporary bridge”. Truth is they did such a nice job on the “temporary” bridge that they really don’t have a good reason to necessarily replace it anytime soon. Sat and watched the 4 PM freight train roll through Voorheesville ๐Ÿš‚ then watched the sunset ๐ŸŒ† from Bender Mellon Farms and rode home quickly, thinking it would get dark but it didn’t so I rode down to Adams Street then back along the designated bike route through the back roads of Delmar. Great evening even if it was shitty day in so many ways. That part of the day was pretty nice, even if I got sick in evening ๐Ÿ˜ซ and my mind was racing the rest of day. ๐Ÿคช

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 8pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 26 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 3rd. Northwest wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of 6 occurred back in 1986.

Last night made homemade tomato sauce with canned tomatoes, Italian spices, spinach, peas, chopped garlic, crushed red pepper, smoked paprika and kidney beans. Added a little bit of lentil pasta towards the end. Tasted good, very filling and kept me full. ๐Ÿฅ˜ It as all good until I added some garlic powder (really not much), which totally blew up my stomach starting around midnight, with frequent visits the bathroom and everything stinking of garlic. I don’t know why I have such problems with this garlic powder I got the other day — crushed garlic is good. I thought the problem was the whole wheat flour I got from Price Chopper but I’m pretty sure it’s the garlic powder. Been having a lot of stomach issues lately, I thought I would adjust to the high-fiber diet but it’s proven difficult. ๐Ÿคฐ

Got reading about the latest generation of single board computers ๐Ÿ–ฅ which keep getting more and more powerful and cheaper. Technology on this front is advancing so quickly, it’s a golden age to be a hobbyist with things like the original Arduino from years ago seeming so out of date. ๐Ÿค– Then I got reading about stomach issues as my stomach grumbled, and this really weird thread on the internet where people fight about whether or not sugars in excessive fruit consumption ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ’ lead to fatty liver disease and diabetes. Most of the experts think the benefit of the extra fiber far outweigh any downsides to a diet rich in fruits, though I do eat a lot of fruit (and vegetables too). Probably too much fruit but I like sweet. But I also don’t eat any food with added sugars if I can all avoid it, which is what most doctors ๐Ÿ‘จ‍โš•๏ธ think really are a big threat to health. I am a bit obsessed with fatty liver disease after people warned me about the risk of loosing so much weight so quickly. Hell of it is I don’t have much control over my weight, it really is a just a side effect of diet. Hard to gain too much when your stuffing your face with fruits, vegetables and beans all of the time, and riding to work and walking everywhere.

Next Friday through the following Monday is looking good for the Adirondacks ๐Ÿ• though only time will determine for sure. โ„๏ธ It looks like the snow event in Wednesday isn’t going to leave feet of snow up north, so I should be able to get back to camp without doing a lot of shoveling or hauling gear back, though worse come to worse, I’ll bring the sled and drag gear back. ๐Ÿ›ท The weekend looks to be cool but not as cold as they first predicted โ˜• and warm coffee and meals along with the heater should be good. And I can get away from it all.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 31 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.

Driving the Elk Highway

Rainy start to for Regular Deer Season in Southern Zone ๐ŸฆŒ

I bet those people sitting in their deer stands this morning are shivering, fighting off hypothermia thinking they probably won’t get their big buck despite the statistics that show two thirds are harvested today. I’m quite okay being inside this morning, enjoying my eggs and spinach, along with the homemade bread, sweet potatoes and butternut squash that I baked starting a little after 5 AM this morning.

Good morning! Rain and 45 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 9 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around midnight tonight. โ˜ƒ๏ธ Kind of a yucky morning, temperature is going to drift downwards as more sun appears later with a steady breeze to keep things good and cool for the balance of the day. That said it’s mild enough, that the heat is off, though I have plenty of warmth inside after all that cooking this morning. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿณ

While I don’t really need to get up at 5 AM on my day off โฐ I wake up that hour, especially as I was asleep before 8 PM last night as it was such a dreary night and I lacked the energy to do my evening walk, ๐Ÿƒ‍โ™€๏ธ though to be fair, I did get in 10,000 steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ for the day, rode my bike 7 3/4 miles to work via the rail trail ๐Ÿšฒ, walked laps at lunch time on the Plaza and then did the stairs up and down to my 18th floor office downtown. I do note that once I move to the suburban North Albany office in a few weeks though it’s going to be more difficult to do the stairs, though I am thinking I’ll probably transfer buses a the Empire Plaza and can walk laps there or days I ride in it’s a bit longer of a ride then downtown, though not the Madison Avenue Hill, though lately I’ve been using Arch Street/Warren Street past the Albany City Jail ๐Ÿ‘ฎ‍โ™€๏ธ and then heading up Park Avenue and Museum Road (yes, the wrong way on a one way street) to the Plaza to avoid the worse of the hill. ๐Ÿคท‍โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿคฃ

I was thinking blueberry pancakes this morning ๐Ÿฅž ๐Ÿ‘Ž ๐Ÿณ but ended up deciding I so love the onions, tomatoes, spinach and eggs for a more protein packed day that will keep me going all day. Also cooked up some kidney beans, I am thinking of making homemade spaghetti sauce from canned tomatoes, chop up some onions, cumin and red pepper with peas and spinach thrown over some chickpea pasta ๐Ÿ for dinner tonight. Along with a generous side of butternut squash and maybe some of the sweet potatoes. ๐Ÿ  ๐Ÿ†

Lunch is going to be some leftover beef stew I got from my parents house about two or three weeks ago that’s been frozen, tossed over some peas and sweet potatoes. ๐Ÿ˜‹ I need to use up some of the leftovers I keep taking home from my parents house. I often forget about left overs. Mom makes good food, even if it is more calorie dense then I would prefer, but then again maybe I’ve gotten a bit extreme with my own cooking. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ I just don’t want slip back into the old life of being so heavy and out of shape. The left over stew should be real tasty. ๐Ÿฒ I can’t complain, mom’s home cooking won’t be around forever, as she’s getting up there in the years, and it’s something you can only enjoy until you no longer can.

Having that extra pot of coffee โ˜• this morning, with the cinnamon and ginger. I am not planning on heading out until a while, and only to the library, so if I spend my day pissing it away, I don’t care. I just like an extra cup or three on this cold morning, with that rich tangy taste of cinnamon and ginger. Plus yesterday when I was walking I started to feel a bit achy, ๐Ÿ˜ฃ first time in a long time, apparently the turmeric with the spinach, onions and eggs isn’t enough to overcome all those stairs I’ve climbed ๐Ÿง—‍โ™€๏ธ over the past week, lol. ๐Ÿคฃ What can I say, I’m getting ducking old ๐Ÿฆ† in a few weeks I’ll be 41. That means two decades have passed since I can legally drink and that first time I went out to the bar with the Young Democrats.  I just remember that night at the Lionheart Cafe downtown, and how much that bar stunk of alcohol ๐Ÿป I think because it was right after they had banned smoking at bars ๐Ÿšญ and they hadn’t gotten good at cleaning all that spilled beer. Or maybe the Lionheart was more of a dive college bar back in the day.

Today will have showers likely, mainly before 7am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing ๐ŸŒง ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 45 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 25th. North wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 43 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1928. 9.0 inches of snow fell back in 1980.โ„

I am thinking I’ll watch and do some more of the Udemeny Course on Remote Sensing ๐Ÿ›ฐ and then shower and go down to the library ๐Ÿ“š so I can use the internet on my laptop this morning without working about data use at 10 AM. Then maybe check out the Bethlehem Sportsmart at 1 PM for skis, โ›ท and then in the afternoon ride out to Voorheesville, maybe visiting Indian Ladder Farms for apples. ๐ŸŽ Or I could just get apples at Price Chopper on Sunday. Also want to see if I can repair my broken vacuum cleaner. Also thinking about doing some soldering and working on an electronics project this evening. I haven’t done much electronics in a while now. ๐Ÿค“

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 28.2° from the due south horizon (-42.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 11.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:49 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (237°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (244°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 14 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 49 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (185°) at an altitude of 24° from the horizon, 227,672 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 11 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 43 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 3 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 31 degrees at 3am. Typical for tonight. Northwest wind 5 to 9 mph becoming light and variable. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 12 occurred back in 1972.

Pretty much typical weather for this evening. ๐Ÿ›Œ I’ll probably head to bed pretty early as it gets dark out so early, and I prefer an earlier start. I want to get to Price Chopper tomorrow morning before the crowds ๐Ÿ›’ and get the groceries I need for the week with my coupons. ๐ŸŽซ And then get up and going on the day. Maybe ride out to Five Rivers ๐Ÿฆ to enjoy the sunshine and cold before heading out to the folks house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ They are making chilli which should be good.

Going to shop at Price Chopper come Sunday as I have two $5 off $50 coupons, ๐ŸŽซ giving one to mom and one for my own use. Plus I have a $2 off $10 in meat or fish coupon to use, I’ll probably stock up on frozen salmon for the next time I decide to bake up some salmon. ๐Ÿ  I haven’t had salmon in a few weeks, and I think I don’t have any more in my freezer currently but its an excellent source of omega-3 fats. ๐Ÿ˜‹

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:56 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 49 and 40 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 45 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 2004.

I am watching the forecast, ๐ŸŒจ especially to see how much snow they get up north on Wednesday, but I’m hopeful to head up to the Adirondacks come Friday, to camp and maybe hike or possibly ski along the East Branch more likely. ๐Ÿ• I would probably take off Cyber Monday so I can have a three-day weekend, as I’ve been planning for some time now, though I am running a bit low on vacation time for the year, and don’t want to drop below 210 hours for the year if I can avoid it to maximize my roll over into next year, where I may need the extra hours to cover time spent working at the campaign committee along with trips I plan for the summer and autumn. ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍๐Ÿ’ป That said, I’m hopeful to do remote work at times next year, so maybe I can extend some of my camping trips while working from the Spectulator Library or the hotspot and my laptop in a hammock from camp. But not until spring time, as it’s too cold and not enough solar in autumn.

Gray Day

Today is National Recycling Day โ™ป …

Loading Glass At The Recycle Plant

Recycling is a bit of an national obsession and a joke these days. More people recycle in America then vote, it’s looked down upon people who don’t use the proper recycling bins. It’s even gotten to the point where people toss so much crap into recycling bins, that waste disposal and sorting costs at recycling plants has become a major drag on the facilities. People want to do the right thing and feel virtuous.

Now I certainly do recycle my cans and glass in part because I pay $2 a bag to dispose of unrecycled material at the transfer station, and it’s a trip down there that I try to avoid making. Plus I don’t like looking at landfills or thinking about all my crushed debris piled up there indefinably. But I generally don’t have a lot of waste, because I buy in bulk, avoid purchasing material things preferring savings over spending, and don’t eat out — a big source of garbage in a country where people spend more money eating out then eating at home. In the summer months, a lot of my burnable stuff, is used for starting campfires.

But having looked at the actual recycling numbers, very little day-to-day household waste actually gets recycled. Of waste commonly disposed in curbside or transfer station in garbage bags and dumpsters, only 2-3% of it actually is separated out into recyclable materials that have a chance of being sold as scrap and reprocessed into something new. Calling scrapping cars, old washing machines, refrigerators, or composting leaves and wood debris recycling distorts what people actually consider recycling — the stuff put in the blue box or recycling dumpster.

Much common waste, maybe not day to day trash is either landfilled, incinerated or burned, from old computers to mattresses to brick and concrete to broken appliances and headphones. Most of it is mixed in with the ordinary household trash, the banana peals and rotting chicken bones then buried or burned, leaching it’s toxic residue into the air and water. Look around your room — how much of the stuff that you had ten years ago is still around you, and how much of it is now landfill or smoke?

Recycling certainly saves materials and landfill space, although common curbside recycling is kind of a joke. It would do better to reduce material consumption and focus on important recyclables like metals, which have to be mined and can be reprocessed with a large part of the material recycled — although not all as some is always lost as a dross. But I think it’s emphasized too much, and focuses on the wrong kind of things — not the toxic wastes like electronics or the bulk wastes like old appliances and furniture.

My electric use is up nearly 33% since last October โšก

Shocking I know. It’s all the baking and cooking I’ve done lately, that extra kilowatt or two adds up each day. Fortunately the difference is maybe $8-10 at the most, as I was using under 100 kWh a month before I got into cooking and now it’s closer to 150 kWh.

As I don’t have a lot of electronics at home, and go to bed early not using a lot of lights, most of the energy I use is the hot water heater, the refrigerator and the stove/oven. And doing cooking uses all three of those appliances a lot more.

But it’s worth it for the fresh bread, healthy delicious meals, and the good life. Who knows, with inflation these days, I’m probably coming out ahead with less money spent at the grocery store on processed foods, though my grocery bills are way up too. I’m not complaining, eating healthy is an important part of being an adult and living the good life.

Wow that was a long intro to my Wednesday blog post!

Good morning! What day is it? A day and cloudy hump Day, of course. Mostly cloudy and 50 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ Calm wind. Charging the light on my bike now, showering shortly and then off to work. Not a lot sun expected tonight, but will clear out late tonight around 8 pm. Might be good for an evening walk, though I haven’t been doing a lot of walking lately, as I’ve been riding to work, intentionally taking the long way in and home to get in more miles on the bike. ๐Ÿšด‍โ™€๏ธ

This morning I burned up more kilowatt hours ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿณ making more homemade bread and butternut squash in the oven, with eggs and coffee up top. โ˜• I had a lot of coffee this morning, and the eggs ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿณ were cooked with onions, kidney beans, cilantro, and some frozen veggies. It was a good morning but I had too many cups of coffee to walk though I was fine riding in as I stopped drinking early enough to piss off some of the excess coffee. The doctor says only one cup of coffee in the morning, which some days I ignore as I like more then one while I’m cooking and having breakfast. If I’m not walking, it’s not like I need a pee break.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 61 degrees at 2pm. Typical for today. Maximum dew point of 47 at 12pm. Light and variable wind. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 84 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 2015.โ„

I will need my bike headlights both directions on for safety. ๐Ÿ”ฆ Not because it’s super dark out but the skies are gray, and it’s so important to be seen by other motorists on the road. I left my taillights charging over night, so they should be plenty bright for the night to come. ๐Ÿšฒ โš ๏ธ The past few nights I’ve been riding out to Slingerlands at the end of the day, to get in a few more miles of exercise as I haven’t been doing my morning walk as it’s so dark, and I don’t love walking in the dark any more, preferring to retire to bed earlier. ๐Ÿ›Œ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:41 pm with sun having an altitude of 37.8° from the due south horizon (-33° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 7.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:32 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (251°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (258°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 6:10 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 58 seconds with dusk around 6:37 pm, which is one minute and 34 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent ๐ŸŒ’ Moon in the southwest (216°) at an altitude of 11° from the horizon, 235,132 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 7:12 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 58 degrees. The dew point will be 47 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Tomorrow will have 10 hours and 57 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 45 seconds over today.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 3am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 43 degrees at 6am. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 11th. Light south wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 20 occurred back in 1974.

Yesterday, I had a project that I worked on down at the library for a while ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ป then I went home and kneaded bread. Dinner was just a quick finishing off of the pea soup, covered with curry and dipping the remaining bread I had a home. ๐Ÿฒ It was a good dinner, after I had a good bike ride home. Tonight I need to think about starting to pack and what food and supplies I’ll need for camping. I told myself today I would run to the store, but I may wait until Friday. Figure I could do the shopping and laundromat at same time, though I kind of want to get more sticky traps for mice ๐Ÿญ and maybe replace that increasingly problematic smoke detector with a modern ten-year one that detects flash over rather then just smoke from cooking.

Weekend still looks wet. Saturday, rain. High near 60. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday, a chance of rain before 8am, then a chance of showers after 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 52. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 60 degrees.

Not as wet though heading south it seems like it will be a wet day ๐ŸŒง as will be the first day camping and by mid-day Sunday in Cumberland Maryland, it might actually have some nice sun for riding the Chesapeake and Ohio Rail Trail before heading down to West Virginia to set up camp for the night. ๐Ÿšฒ I want to spend a fair amount of time poking around Cumberland, but I also realize that night will sneak up before you know it this time of year. ๐Ÿ• ๐ŸŒ†

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm with dusk at 6:18 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, warm, mist and temperatures between 69 and 54 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1950.

How to stay cool without air conditioning

Staying cool without air conditioning can be challenging, but there are several effective strategies you can employ to beat the heat:

  1. Use Fans:
    • Ceiling fans or portable fans can help circulate air and make you feel cooler.
    • Place a bowl of ice or a frozen water bottle in front of a fan to create a DIY air conditioner.
  2. Close Curtains and Blinds:
    • Keep blinds, curtains, or shades closed during the hottest part of the day to block out direct sunlight.
  3. Create Cross-Ventilation:
    • Open windows on opposite sides of your home to encourage cross-ventilation. This helps to draw in cooler outside air.
  4. Seal Gaps and Insulate:
    • Make sure doors and windows are properly sealed to prevent warm air from entering your home.
    • Consider using weatherstripping or draft stoppers.
  5. Use Natural Ventilation:
    • Open windows during the evening and early morning when the outside temperature is cooler.
  6. Stay Hydrated:
    • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. This can help regulate your body temperature.
  7. Cooling Clothing:
    • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing to help your body stay cool.
  8. Take Cool Showers or Baths:
    • A cool shower or bath can provide instant relief from the heat.
  9. Use Cooling Products:
    • Apply a damp cloth or use a cooling towel on your forehead, neck, and wrists.
    • Consider using a handheld personal fan or a cooling vest.
  10. Limit Heat-Producing Activities:
    • Avoid using heat-generating appliances like ovens and stoves during the hottest parts of the day.
    • Opt for meals that don’t require cooking, or use a microwave or slow cooker to minimize heat production.
  11. Create DIY Airflow:
    • Place a shallow bowl of ice in front of a fan to cool the air as it circulates.
  12. Hang Wet Sheets or Towels:
    • Hang damp sheets or towels in front of open windows to cool incoming air through evaporation.
  13. Sleep Low:
    • Hot air rises, so if your home has multiple levels, consider sleeping on the lower floors.
  14. Stay in Cooler Areas:
    • Spend time in air-conditioned public places like libraries, malls, or community centers during the hottest part of the day.
  15. Use Natural Cooling Techniques:
    • Plant shade trees around your home to reduce direct sunlight and lower the outdoor temperature.
  16. Limit Electronics:
    • Electronics generate heat, so reduce their usage during hot weather.
  17. Stay Informed:
    • Keep an eye on weather forecasts to plan your activities around cooler times of the day.
  18. Stay Still:
    • Physical activity generates body heat, so try to limit strenuous activities during the hottest hours.

Remember that staying cool without air conditioning requires a combination of strategies and adjustments. Experiment with these methods to find the ones that work best for your specific situation.

My allergy to home internet service, air conditioning and television

My allergy to home internet service, air conditioning and television ๐Ÿ“บ

I am an unusual person this day of age choosing to live without home internet access or air conditioning. It’s part of my choice to live simply and without modern conveniences that a lot of folks have. My budget is pretty tight these days and while I could make such things fit I choose to do without.

But I also worry if I made my apartment too comfortable if I would ever go out. What is the incentive to go to the library or down to the park if I had internet at home? Why ever go outside in the summer months if my apartment is perfectly chilled to a delightful temperature. No need to drive up to the Adirondacks for a swimming hole or a cool night in the woods if I can sit next to the cool breeze at home.

Maybe my objection to air conditioning is a bit silly. I mean there are plenty of people who live off grid down in Missouri and Oklahoma and other southern states and they have air conditioning – you can build a big enough system with batteries and solar to keep cool year round. Plenty of farmers and homesteaders have air conditioning – sure they’re barns might be sticky but their tractors and trucks are air conditioned – and when they’re done with chores they climb into an air conditioned tractor cab, office or home. People who fish, hunt and camp in the summer typically lack air conditioning.

The same is true for the internet. Having high speed access to the web doesn’t mean you can’t go outside or enjoy life away from home. It’s just more convenient than looking for a free hot spot. Having internet access at home might be essential in the future for some remote work jobs, especially if i want to run a business from my off-grid cabin. But still it seems kind of imprisoning to have the unlimited, always on flow of information at your house.

Not owning a television. Well that’s one I can’t criticize. I don’t see much benefit to commercials. I do watch my favorite off-grid and homesteading channels, the real farmer channels and some stuff about electronics and electricity – mechanical shit – but not anything I’d find on commercial television. I download them as free from YouTube.

Maybe my views are changing but I still have to think living with less is a better way of life. I like my toys but it’s better to enjoy them outside rather than inside.
