Ground Hog Day 2016 Morning

Good Morning! Happy Ground Hog Day. Early spring it looks like. Currently 40 degrees and sunny this morning in Albany. This afternoon we are looking for a high around 45 degrees. Light breeze. Going to be a nice one for early February. Sunset at 5:09 PM with darkness around 5:30. Should be a nice sunset. Tonight the Waning Crescent Moon with 36% visible will rise around 2:03 AM. Early risers and those up before tomorrow’s sunrise are most likely to see it. The new moon is next Monday.

I left my cellphone home this morning, so I guess I won’t be able to use it at work today. I realized I didn’t have my cellphone with me, so my choice was either to run home and catch a later bus or leave the phone home. I decided on the later. At least it will be well charged when I get home.

Certainly the bright sunshine nice this morning. It’s been so cloudy, dark, and gray lately. Sunshine just gives us some hope, especially as we enjoy it’s warmth. All things considered, this has been a rather depressing winter season. But maybe the early spring will mean warmer temperatures with adequate rain to prevent the fire risk. We will see. I heard that January was pretty darn dry by historical standards. I’m sure we have to get at least one good snow storm this year.

It seems like January came and went fairly quickly, which is nice because I’m already pretty tired of winter. It’s not so much the cold and the snow as the extended darkness. The nights are just so incredibly long this time of year. That said, I wouldn’t mind a nice weekend up at Moose River Plains once summer comes back around.

I think so much of the obsession over the Iowa Caucasus is a bit silly. NPR had three hours of analysis on the Iowa Caucus results last night, which I have to admit I did tune into hear a bit. Like many Americans, I was fascinated by the race between Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Ms. Clinton won the Iowa Caucus but not by a lot. I was surprised how well Mr. Sanders preformed. Iowa is a fun state with good gun laws and not a lot of restrictions on open burning in the country. If it burns, you can burn it within reason. They as a state are a bit devoid of public lands, but they do have some good dirt for growing crops, which is why they produce a big chunk of the nation’s corn and soy, and they also feed a lot of hogs and cattle. Food is good.

That said, I think Punxsatawney Phil can tell us more about our country’s future then the Iowa Caucus.

Chapin Brothers – Ground Hog Song
Come out little ground hog.
Put your head above the ground.
Can’t you see there ain’t no shadow, on that cold, cold ground?
But if you dance your song, and you know that winter’s gone.
Come out little ground hog, spring a spring on me!

There are 2 months, 23 days until Arbor Day. Looking forward to the warmer temperatures and some green popping up. Maybe the Ground Hog is on to something.

This day in 1934, the Export-Import Bank of the United States is incorporated. The bank finances and insures foreign purchases of United States goods for customers unable or unwilling to accept credit risk. It was suspended for several months this year, when Congress refused to renew it’s charter, suggesting the bank was corporate welfare, and allowed risky American corporations to succeed when the market alone would not sustain them.

Grooving along, living in the new world with Oliver Anthony

Songs about about of populism and nostalgia dominate the radio while people think back to the simpler more innocent times of the 2000s and 2010s when Climate Change induced storms didn’t lead the news headlines a leading presidential candidate wasn’t an octonian or an multi time indicted felon. As we count down the days until America turns 250 with all the signs and banners to be erected and days to be celebrated with fireworks and picnics.

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Mostly cloudy and 58 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 54 degrees. The skies will clear Saturday around 4 am.

Woke up early ⏰ as I was asleep early at nine 9⃣ and made an omelet with chopped zucchini and tomatoes that I ran through the food processor with garlic and onion. Added a little bit of milk and corn starch to make the egg extra fluffy. Breakfast first then the walk. Normally I prefer the other order but it was dark out early.

Today will have a chance of showers, mainly between noon and 3pm. Cloudy 🌦, with a high of 69 degrees at 2pm. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. Maximum dew point of 61 at 2pm. South wind 6 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was humid. The high last year was 86 degrees. The record high of 95 was set in 1947.

Maybe it won’t be a wash out today🌧️ but I think it probably best to take the bus 🚍 in today to work as it likely will be rain by evening. I’ve also noticed a numbness in my finger tips 🖕 and that’s a sign of carpal tunnel syndrome developing in my hands 👐 by putting too much weight on them and pinching the nerves. Not as bad yesterday as I was more careful about putting so much weight on them heading home climbing that big hill out of gorge but I got to be careful about pinching the nerves and causing permanent damage needing surgery.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:59 pm with sun having an altitude of 58.5° from the due south horizon (-12.3° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:07 pm with the sun in the west (280°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (286°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:45 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 1 seconds with dusk around 8:13 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the south-southwest (194°) at an altitude of 20° from the horizon, 234,641 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:51 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 67 degrees. The dew point will be 60 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 41 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday I rode out to Voorheesville 🚂 along the rail trail and spent a little bit of time out at the park 🏞 with a book before it got dark out. 25 miles ridden and 4 miles walked yesterday. Today I doubt 🤷‍♂️ I’ll do much riding today but I’ll walk five miles plus do the stairs at the office. As previously noted, I was in bed before 9 PM and didn’t bother to watch the Republican debate. 🐘 It’s not like I plan to vote for any candidates, as I’m an enrolled Democrat and I think I prefer Biden over any of the GOP candidates, not that I’m a big lover of Biden either but he does seem to be doing some meaningful things on the environment and climate change — to say nothing of labor and civil rights. Maybe he’s the best option, but I’ll cast my protest vote come November 2024, as New York is almost certain to go blue regardless of my vote. 💙

Oliver Anthony’s Rich Men North of Richmond, 🎤 might be rocking the country charts, with it’s anti-establishment critical view of what’s happening in our government, but he also has a pretty good mixture of other songs worth listening to even if you don’t like his controversial lyrics for putting the government in a bad light. 🏰 I was listening to more of his songs, and really enjoying it. There is a lot of other good artists over at RadioWV.

Tonight will have showers and thunderstorms likely, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2am. 🌧 Low of 63 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 63 at 1am. 🏖️ Breezy, with a south wind 13 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1940.

Been researching how to bake bread 🍞 as I am thinking from fresh homemade bread would be good come this winter, and I could make it with less oil and sugar then many of the commercial breads. Not looking at recipes that much, but trying to learn how all the ingredients play together and alternative forms of bread, especially whole grains and oatmeal. 🌿 Thinking it would be good with a good split-pea or other homemade soup, or dipped in extra-virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Already using balsamic vinegar for acidity in many of my foods, it really gives a lot of meals a lot of extra flavor.

Back in 1967, the Yippies of Abbie Hoffman’s Youth International Party temporarily disrupts trading at the New York Stock Exchange by throwing dollar bills from the viewing gallery, 💵 🤡 💸 causing trading to cease as brokers scramble to grab them. As they say, it’s all about the money. Or something like that Dan Halloran said in his bid to sell the NYC Mayorship. 👩‍⚖️ Money matters a lot, it’s a way to get a lot of things done.

Weekend forecast is improving. ☺ Saturday, a slight chance of showers between 8am and 2pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 77. Northwest wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Maximum dew point of 65 at 11am. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 75. Maximum dew point of 59 at 12pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 81 degrees.

Looking ahead, there are 7 weeks until Columbus Day ⛵ 🍂🍁 when the sun will be setting at 6:20 pm with dusk at 6:47 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 71 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 63 degrees. We hit a record high of 85 back in 1954.

Pond's Edge

December 23, 2022 Evening

Good evening! Mostly cloudy and 20 degrees in Delmar. ☁ There is a west-southwest breeze at 15 mph. 🍃 with gusts up to 37 mph 💨💨💨. The current wind chill is 6. There are 3 inches of snow on the ground — the rain didn’t kill that off. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at Wednesday around noontime. 🌡️ The warmer weather and rain heading into New Years Eve might kill it off though. Plus a fresh coating of black ice and slipperiness outside this evening, though I stayed home today so I don’t really know. Turned up the heat a bit tonight, maybe too much with the cold, but maybe I’ll put it back down before bed. Doesn’t need to be set at 55 degrees, I can do 50 and lower heating bills. I’ll leave the cabinets open before bed. It’s not like sub-zero weather tonight. Wind has died down a lot.

Yesterday I got home fairly early, 🏘 and got unpacked from camping. I wanted nothing to do with driving home in the rain and snow that was predicted, especially as the day predicted. Plus my ski boots were frozen hard from the cold so I couldn’t get them on my feet ⛷ and the surface voltage on my starting battery 🔋 was starting to make me a bit nervous on my truck, so as soon as I packed up I headed home. I thought about, and probably should have used my hunting boots and hiked up to see the Rensselaerville Falls but parking was limited in the hamlet due to the snow banks, and I simply was in the mood to get home, get unpacked before the heavy driving rain came in. It came but was later then I thought at first.

Wednesday was absolutely a perfect day for winter camping, ❄️ lots of sun, a reasonable amount of snow, and no wind. It was cold enough, but not too cold that the snow wasn’t melting. ⛷ Places though where a trail wasn’t well packed down from snowmobiles, like the parameter trail at Rennselaerville State Forest proved to be a lot more difficult skiing then I had hoped. But for winter camping, the weather was awesome. Wednesday night was mild, a nice night by the campfire, but it did get dark early.

Thursday was dreary, much like today 🌧 and I spent the final two days of my vacation at home. I wanted to get to the library 📚 this evening but they closed early due to the icing of the roads. 🌨 I am sure the librarians appreciated being able to head home early into the holiday weekend. They are also closed on Monday after Christmas. It’s fine, I have the hotspot I can use at home. 🤳 Going to be cold but I will try to bundle up and get some steps in over the holiday weekend. 👣 Probably could go to Five Rivers with just the microspikes this weekend, which means I wouldn’t have to drive or take the skis there. I probably should have been more active the past two days, but while camping, it was a ton of work, especially shoveling that heavy, deep wet snow to park my truck and clear out camp, then trudging the skis through the deep snow.

Today was quiet, 📗 some reading and FreeCodeCamp and too much time probably wasted on Youtube and working on various R graphs and charts. I finished up the Web Libraries class, though I still have to do the projects. 🤖 I really don’t enjoy this unit, and while I started a bit on the web visualization class — which I think may be more interesting, I shouldn’t get too far ahead of myself. Reading another book about probability and how people always get large numbers wrong.

Had a surprise expense on my credit card 😱 which had me worried for $21 dollars. I had forgotten I got my truck inspected last week. 🔍 Truck passed inspection, despite the trailer hitch among other things beings a rusty mess under the frame. I do need to wash the truck again. It’s getting old, but with the passed inspection, I’m hopeful to get it through one more year. I am going to cut back on driving and trips next summer again, because of my truck getting older, high gas prices, and because I want to keep my focus on growing my investments and retirement. I had a good year this year, and I know if I keep my eyes on the prize 🚜 I can get to a better tomorrow.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 8 degrees at 2am. 13 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -6 at 1am; Southwest wind 13 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 22 degrees. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1989. Cold night ahead. Maybe this the cold moon, with none in sight.

Tonight will have a New 🌚 Moon with 0% illuminated. Not going to see the stars either — with those clouds. The Wolf 🐺 Moon is on Friday, January 6. The darkest hour is at 11:55 pm, followed by dawn at 6:52 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:24 am in the east-southeast (122°) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 27 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 8:10 am with sun in the southeast (130°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 54 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 8 seconds over last night.

Made my final investment and retirement account payment for the year today. 💸 I think I ended up investing $52,000 for the year, maxing out my Roth IRA, 457B retirement accounts and increasing my stock and bond portfolio quite a bit, skipping savings, due to the low interest rates and inflation. Still, my next worth ended up farther in the red this year then I would have liked due to the heavy hit on both the stock and bond markets from the rising fed rates. 📉 Killing inflation, before it gets out of hand has to be priority, and the way I look at it, I probably got good deals this year. But who knows, we might have a recession next year, and things decline further. But I think I did good, even if it was kind of a tough year with inflation, high gas prices, and finding myself sticking closer to home then I would have hoped for much of the year.

People say that I should spend more money 💵 and buy more garbage but I am concerned that I’m falling farther and farther behind in life and that I’m not going to have a secure 🔐 future. So much of the things I own are worn out and taped together, despite my good paying job. My apartment is such a dump. But I hear about so many seniors 🧓 living in poverty and not being able to afford to retire and that is not the life I want to live. Plus all my friends and colleagues are buying houses and homesteads and I don’t have that kind of money yet saved up, at least not in cash and I don’t borrow. I just hate throwing away money and my future 🔮 like so many do these days. I really do want to own my own land 🚜.

Christmas Eve will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 17 degrees at 2pm. 19 degrees below normal. Maximum wind chill around -5 at 6am; Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 29 degrees. The record high of 72 was set in 2015. 13.0 inches of snow fell back in 1966.❄

Heading out to the folks house 🤶 for a Christmas Eve lunch with my niece and parents, and then who knows what I will do later, probably just head home because it’s cold out. But I do need to get back out and start doing my steps again. I’ve done so bad this week, with the rain and cold. To be fair, several of those days though I was out camping. And I did spend a lot of time updating and working on my blog.

No jury duty next week, 👨‍⚖️ and only one final week of the federal jury term remaining after New Years Eve. Maybe I’ll never get called in. At least I will be able to be in the office next week, when I’m the only supervisor that will be in my unit. I enjoyed my week off — well the best based on the weather — and now the other director is off next week. Will be a busy week for me, despite only being a four-day week. Who knows on jury duty ⚖ though – I think the federal term will get me off from the state, but I also know I have state deferral that they might try to get me for if I don’t serve. I almost wish I would get called in for a day to be certain.

In four weeks on January 20 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (243°) at 4:54 pm,🌄 which is 26 minutes and 54 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 15 degrees. The record high of 53 degrees was set back in 2006.

I do want to get out camping again 🏕 maybe for New Years Eve, or Martin Luther King Day Weekend which is now three weeks off. Maybe take off the Friday before the holiday weekend to get in three nights of camping. For NYE, if there isn’t too much snow, I would like to go out to Brookfield Horse Camp, 🐴 otherwise I might do Cole Hill or another state forest. Maybe for MLK weekend, I would do Renselaerville State Forest again and ski there again. ⛷

Looking ahead, tomorrow is Christmas Eve 🎅, Bacon Day 🥓 is Next Friday and Bacon Day 🥓 is Next Friday.

October 19, 2022 – Next Sixteen Weeks

Heading deeper into the autumn which will become winter. But like any season, it will come and go and slowly but surely the days will grow longer and nights less cold. But first we have late autumn and winter.

Weather Update – August 15, 2022

I think hope of the drought ending soon isn’t in this week’s forecast 🤔

At least not so hot this week with ample sunshine. Maybe it’s a chance to get better at getting my steps in every day. I just feel better, less achy and more energetic when I walk.

It looks like it will be a decent weekend to get out of town, maybe the last chance to spend a Saturday totally off the grid until November. No emails or work one day would be nice.

Labor Day Weekend I might head up to the Spectulator area but it would be a working trip as I’m sure I’ll be busy. Might want to hike up Pillsbury Mountain Labor Day Saturday after dark to see the fire towers all lit up.

Looking below at the chart, you can see how much daylight we are losing in the plunge. But as God takes away, come April and May he will bring it back along with a ton of black flies.

Daily Update – April 1, 2022

Good morning! Happy Trout Season 🎣

River levels have to be raging after last night’s rain. But trout season isn’t a one day affair and indeed it’s April so don’t be fooled.

After last night’s heavy rain, just cloudy ☁️and 43 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. ☃️

It wouldn’t be a bad day for fishing 🎣 if not for the high water levels and the fact that I have to work today. Friday often is the busiest day of the year where I work. 🏢 That said most of this week has been a bit of a busy week. I guess it makes up for all of the downtime earlier on.

Last night I got home around 6 🏡 had a quick dinner 🍲 but the rain arrived before I could go for my evening walk. So I sat on the tailgate of my pick up 🛻 and watched the rain come in before it really started to pour. Then I retired to bed around seven 7⃣. I was tired as I keep waking up earlier and earlier. I honestly thought 💭 it was going to be a much longer night at work.

Definitely a good rain storm last night 🌧️, probably good for a few inches of rain and lots of sewer overflows in the cities. We ended up with above average precipitation for the month of March due to the rain.

I thought about going out to Rennselearville to fish and camp over night this weekend but water levels are high, going to be windy and very sunny on Saturday. ☀ Plus I’m thinking of going up north or maybe to Central NY either thr following weekend or maybe Easter Weekend. ⛺

It might be another stay at home 🏡 weekend. Probably too cold to paint Big Red but that’s fine. I get tired from the work week and like to rest on Saturday. Then maybe take a walk out to Five Rivers. 🐦 Then maybe finish up my home work for the GIS class down at the library. 📚

I was thinking about going to the transfer station ♻ to drop off cans 🥫 and bottles but I might wait as I’m the about seeing if there is some garbage or e-waste that I can purge. I haven’t taken anything to the transfer station as garbage on about ten years, preferring to burn or recycle most of it with an occasional gas station garbage can. But you sometimes end up with things like broken metal chairs or a broken snow shovel that don’t fit into any of those categories nicely. It’s nice when you don’t generate much garbage but you end up with a lot of broken shit. 🗑

Been researching Park and Ride lots in Schenectady and bus schedules 🚍 as that might be a convenient alternative to facing rush hour traffic getting out of the city when heading up to the Adirondacks this summer. There is that CDTA 531 express to Saint Lukes and Woodlawn Park and Ride plus the limited stop CDTA 905. 🚏I hate driving the Thruway at rush hour and while I would have to get an earlier start, most of the traffic would be going the opposite way plus I wouldn’t have to find street parking in Albany. Another possibility I saw was that CDTA is taking over or at least chartering Brown’s Amsterdam routes so I might be able to even park there. 🅿

I don’t know about you but I’m glad April has returned. 🌷 The greening up of things is always nice as is getting out of town ⛺ and sleeping 😴 with the windows open 🔳. I’m sure with the rain last night and the relatively mild forecast for the week ahead it should accelerate the rate spring arrives. As much as I hate the black flies it’s nice to have nights in the wilderness by the fire with a cold beer 🔥. And I’m really looking forward to laying in a lazy river with that big black truck intertube. ⚫
