August 5, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy Sunday. Next Sunday is Last Sunset After 8 PM 🌆. Mostly sunny and 73 degrees in Hector. There is a southwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 64 degrees. Camping gear is all packed in the truck, the next step is throwing in my bathing suit for a quick swim at Robert Treman State Park then home. Alas, it’s back to work tomorrow so I can make some money.

Today will be sunny 🌞 , with a high of 86 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5pm. Southwest wind 5 to 7 mph. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 80 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1955.

The sun will set at 8:21 pm with dusk around 8:53 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds earlier than yesterday at least in the Finger Lakes. Even earlier when I get to Albany. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies and 81 degrees. The dew point will be 67 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 14 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 18 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌞 , with a low of 72 degrees at 3am. Eight degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 67 at 7pm. Southwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2017, we had partly cloudy skies. It got down to 54 degrees. The record low of 45 occurred back in 1994.

Last night was a spectacular sunset over Seneca Lake from the Interlaken Trail but unfortunately my camera battery went dead too soon.📷 But I was fine with that as it gave me time to observe it. Besides the cows on the trail issue it was a nice little hike.🌅 I hope to see a similarly beautiful sunset next year.

I got back to camp, spent some time straighting things up while I waited for my phone to charge and it to get totally dark then hiked up to Foster Pond.🐸 Beautiful starry night – finally after a week camping – but still a bit hazy.🌌 Still amazing to sit back and listen to the toads and peepers, stare up at the constellations and wonder if there are a million other suns and earth’s out there with many of the same problems as us. I saw two shooting stars.

If I camp here again in the November, I will have to hike back there on a starry November night. 🌠Rather than having to wait for eleven, I can enjoy the stars at seven or so. I would wear lots of blaze orange and bring a flashlight lest I get shit by a poacher.🔫

I had a campfire when I got back as it flipped over to the new day.. Wood was very wet, it was hard to get started but eventually I did. 🔥Enjoyed the fire from the comfort of my hammock one last time before things are done on vacation.

Slept into 8:00 this morning. 💤I’m planning to get on the road by 10:30 so I can get to Robert Treman aka Enfield Glen for a quick swim on this beautiful day before I have to head home. 🏊My goal is to leave Ithaca before one and be home before five so I can unpack and make Sunday dinner at my folks house.

Seemed like a big project to take down my campsite after a week camping at this site but really it’s not that much more than usual, except maybe for the tent where I stored supplies and my tarp β›Ί. But I got it taken down and truck is packed except for the hammock and flags. I should be able to maintain my schedule today and get out an enjoy a nice swim. 🏊 I’m going to shave this morning and will pack clothes so that I can take a shower after swimming so I won’t have to do that when I get home. Going to be hot back in Albany so I want to unpack and get out to my parents house as early as possible.

As previously noted, next Sunday is Last Sunset After 8 PM 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 8:12 pm with dusk at 8:42 pm. On that day in 2017, we had thunderstorm, thunderstorm rain, rain, shallow fog, mist, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 81 and 63 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 81 degrees. We hit a record high of 99 back in 1944.

July 31, 2018 Night

Good evening! I guess July will be over in less than an hour, as I sit back relaxing. Soon it will be August. Cloudy and 71 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector. ☁ There is a south breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 65 degrees.

Laying back in the hammock, the breeze actually makes it feel fairly cool despite the mugginess. 💨While the rain is holding off, at some point though it will come and I’ll retire to bed.

I thought it was a pretty good day, even though I wasn’t planning on going back to Ithaca, but I thought I needed propane. Hiking at Buttermilk Falls State Park was fun, as it’s been a few years since I’ve been there as parking the big truck there is tough, and I especially enjoyed exploring Lake Treman, which was quiet.🐸 The dam and the trail with stone stairs around it was quite impressive. You don’t realize how many projects were built by the CCC workers across the Finger Lakes.🚧 Robert Treman swimming area seemed warmer today and I got chance to get cleaned up and got water. 🏊

I’m going to take it hour by hour tomorrow, figuring out what to do with the weather. 🕔 I may go to Watkins Glen and swim in the pool if it’s not too wet. Might also hike on some of the trails in the National Forest too. 🚶🐄

July 29, 2018 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 63 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest in Hector. β›… Calm wind. The dew point is 55 degrees. When you are sitting back it’s a bit chilly.

Third night of vacation but there still six more left but not likely to be as nice as tonight. Could certainly be a bit warmer and clearer though, 🌌 as many of the stars are blocked by the clouds. The moon rise was pretty and hopefully later in the week more chances to view the stars will avail themselves.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ☁, with a low of 60 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 57 at 2am. South wind 3 to 5 mph. So far its been a pretty good vacation, maybe not perfect but I’m really happy with getting the campsite I really like, and now being able to hike back to Foster Pond and look up at stars. I had a neighbor to my campsite but it looks like he left after a while. β›Ί Not only does the campsite have many nice things nearby, it’s well drained for the rain we may get later in the week, has sun for the solar panel, and is quite quiet. A few cars pass by from time to time but not a lot of traffic.

As I noted earlier on the blog, I hiked back about four or five miles along the Finger Lakes Trail from Watkins Glen to Sugar Hill State Forest. Not a lot of great views but still a pleasant hike, in many cases on old carriage roads. 🏃Then I went for a swim and relaxed at the Adirondack Chairs at the pool. Listening to the Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me podcast with Jim Comey was hillarious especially with the news these days.

Tomorrow I’m leaning towards Robert Treman State Park if the swimming area is open. It’s always frigid and muddy, but I want to visit it at least once this year and it may close later in the week due to the thunderstorms which could make the water turbid again. 😎Tuesday and Wednesday don’t look like complete wash outs but I expect I will just hang out at camp those days under a tarp, maybe do a little fishing and relaxing. 🎣

In four weeks on August 26 the sun will be setting here in the Finger Lakes at 7:50 pm,🌄 which is 39 minutes and 19 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had patches of fog, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 73 and 49 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 79 and 59 degrees. The record high of 98 degrees was set back in 1948.

Looking ahead, Last Sunset After 8 Pm in Albany 🌆 is in 2 weeks, Daylight Savings Time Ends 🛥️ is in 14 weeks, Veterans Day (Sunday) 🇺🇸 is in 15 weeks, First Sunday of Advent ✝️ is in 18 weeks and 36th Birthday 🎉 is in 6 months.

July 28, 2017 Morning

Good morning! Second to the last full day of vacation. Sunday it’s back to Albany. Monday is work. Five weeks to September 1st. Mostly cloudy and 71 degrees at Enfield Glen aka Robert Treman State Park in Ithaca. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. The dew point is 66 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around 7 am.

Yesterday I hiked through Watkins Glen and spent a few hours at the pool. I went to the Laundromat and got ice cream at Glen Dairy Bar. When I got back to camp, I grilled up a burger and the cows came over to see what I was grilling. Hiked back to Foster Pond after dark and looked at the few stars that were up there – not many though. No campfire though.  Tonight hopefully there will be more stars if I go back there. I want to also have a fire tonight, because I’m rapidly running out nights on vacation and I need to catch up on burning the camp garbage.

Today I’m out hiking at Robert Treman State Park and then will see if the swimming area is open. If it is I will probably visit it and then in the evening go back to Watkins Glen and maybe hit up the pool and Glen Dairy Bar again. Maybe see if I can see a good sunset over Seneca Lake from one of the pastures.
Today will be mostly cloudy, with a high of 76 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 11am. North wind 5 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 91 degrees. The record high of 99 was set in 1929.

November 12, 2016 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Mostly sunny and 46 degrees at the Enfield Glen at Robert Treman State Park. There is a west breeze at 8 mph.

Exploring Enfield Glen after hiking and exploring Connecticut Hill WMA. That area, the largest WMA in NY State gets a lot of hunting pressure but still was interesting to explore. That said, I only really only scratched the surface. There is a lot of area to explore. Surprisingly, the gorge trail is still open at Enfield Glen, because it hasn’t iced up for the winter.

My ankle seems to be not so sore now after I took some Tylenol and exercised it walking up Enfield Glen. Maybe sore is too strong of a word. Slightly painful. I think it’s because I’ve been doing a lot more walking and climbing since I left North Syracuse.

Also the service four wheel drive has reset and everything is working fine. I’m sure it’s just from idling the truck in 4×4 auto and confusing the computer. I’m fine with that. In the cold I restart the truck more to ensure a good charge on the batteries.

But other than that, a nice day. Could be a bit warmer though. Tomorrow will be nicer.

July 27, 2016 10 PM Update

Gond evening! Mostly clear and 72 degrees in Burdett. Calm wind. The dew point is 60 degrees. Back at Foster Pond looking at the stars on my final night at the Finger Lakes National Forest. I was going to do some fishing but it got late, and decided to just sit down by the lake on my back. Even at ten pm, it’s really not that dark in the west for looking at the stars. In a little bit, I’ll wander back to camp and start a small fire and stay up for a while before retiring for the night.

Tonight will be mostly clear, with a low of 67 degrees at 5am. Three degrees above normal. Light and variable wind becoming northwest around 5 mph after midnight. Maximum dew point of 60 at 10pm. The record low of 44 occurred back in 1971. Waning Crescent Moon tonight with 40% illuminated. The moon will rise around 1:20 am. The New Moon Moon is on Tuesday with partly cloudy skies expected. The Full β€œStrugeon” Moon is on Thursday, August 18th.

It was a fun day, swimming at Robert H Treman State Park then going to Watkins Glen for ice cream and swimming in the Watkins Glen pool. I stopped at the Watkins Glen library and checked my email and did some work on my laptop. Cooked some bratwurst for dinner.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high of 83 degrees at 2pm. One degrees above normal. West wind 3 to 5 mph. The record high of 99 was set in 1929. The sun will rise at 5:55 am with the first light at 5:23 am, which is 1 minutes and 0 seconds later then yesterday.
0.2 inch of rain expected between Thursday 2pm and Friday 7pm. 0.1 inch of rain expected between Saturday 8pm and Sunday 7am. Within the next four days, a total of 0.3 inches of rain is expected.

Tomorrow I’m taking down camp, will hit the Watkins Glen State Park Pool briefly before heading down to Pennsylvania. Going to camp the next three nights in the Allegheny National Forest. I will miss the Finger Lakes but it’s time to move on. Plan to visit Allegany State Park and Quaker Lake for some swimming and possibly Erie PA and Presque Isle State Park on Saturday. We’ll see.

July 27, 2016 3 PM Update

Good afternoon! Sunny and 90 degrees in Ithaca. There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. The dew point is 59 degrees. Today on the nice weather scale is a ten out of ten.  Warm but not much humidity at all!

I had a good couple of hours at Robert H. Treman State Park Swimming Area, but my feet a sore  from walking on the shale. Yeah, I’m weak. Swam a few times to the falls and felt the warmth of the falling water. Once the swimming area had to be evacuated as some kid jumped off the diving board who didn’t know how to swim.

Heading back to Watkins Glen to hit up the Glen Dairy Bar, get some good ice cream, then Watkins Glen pool. Will stop by the library to check the Internet and get the latest podcasts at seven. Also want to get some orange juice for the morning.

Quick breakfast tomorrow then tear down camp, swim at Watkins Glen then Pennsylvania and Allegheny National Forest.
