Another work week draws to a close with the holiday party today 🀢

One week until the start of the Christmas Weekend and two until New Years Eve Weekend. Both weeks will be abbreviated as I plan to take off next Friday and the following Monday and Tuesday after Christmas where I work are holidays. Lot of work projects on my desk as I pack up my office and get ready to do a trip out to Madison County next week. Today is Bill of Rights Day and also the 56th anniversary of the Silver Bridge Disaster down in Point Pleasant, WV.

Good morning! Happy Friday. Only two more left this year. Mostly clear at the freezing point πŸŒ… in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Going to be a nice day. Will be a bit cold for riding into work but I’ve done it in much colder weather for sure. Time goes by so quickly it seems.

The ride to work 🚲 was pleasant and if leave early from the party πŸŽ‰ I’ll be able to ride home after getting a beer 🍻 at City Beer Hall. I haven’t decided what’s for dinner tonight, last night fried up some left over riggis from last week’s Sunday dinner with corn, butternut squash, tofu, mushrooms and onions. Not too bad. Had some more of that rye bread I made up. Maybe I should stop frying things up, but it’s so good especially with some spices, and a little avocado oil isn’t the most unhealthy thing ever. You need some fats in your diet to absorb fat soluble vitamins, and omega-3 fats are the healthier option to do so.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 50 degrees at 1pm. 12 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 15th. South wind 6 to 16 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 33 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2015. 8.2 inches of snow fell back in 1968.❄

The cookies πŸͺ I baked for cookie share day were kind of disappointing in my book, rather bland and too tart. The whole wheat flour I used was grainy, the stevia wasn’t sweet enough and had an after taste not balancing out the cranberries well. πŸ’ I need to experiment with other sweeteners like monk fruit, or maybe honey or pure maple syrup, or just plain old sugar. Not everything has to be perfectly healthy, though I don’t want to get in the habit of consuming large amounts of unhealthy sugar, though I guess it’s somewhat balanced by the whole-wheat red flour adding fiber. Truth is I’ve kind of gotten to really dislike the taste of stevia — I first got into it for sweetening lemonade in the summer as a healthy low-calorie alternative to beer while camping, but the after taste it leaves in my mouth is kind of yucky, and I don’t like how it tastes with baking those cookies.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:51 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1° from the due south horizon (-46.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 14 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent πŸŒ’ Moon in the south-southwest (213°) at an altitude of 15° from the horizon, 228,509 miles away. πŸš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 13 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 30 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 34 degrees at 5am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 9th. Northwest wind around 7 mph becoming northeast after midnight. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1917.

It’s annoying having that broken burner on my stove, ♨️ so I need to get that part this weekend. I am pretty sure it’s a standard 6 inch burner, and I can get that at Lowes for $11 so I am not going to bother my landlord. I’ll replace the drip trays again, which after about 3 or 4 years have burned through again. I really enjoy cooking, πŸ‘©‍🍳 so I want to make sure my stove is in top shape, especially as I often find myself using all four burners, and that’s the largest burner on my stove.

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed under the weight of rush-hour traffic, resulting in the deaths of 46 people. Two of the victims were never found. πŸŒ‰ The Silver Bridge was an eyebar-chain suspension bridge built in 1928 and named for the color of its aluminum paint. The bridge carried U.S. Route 35 over the Ohio River, connecting Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and Gallipolis, Ohio. Investigation of the wreckage pointed to the cause of the collapse being the failure of a single eyebar in a suspension chain, due to a small defect 0.1 inches (2.5 mm) deep. Analysis showed that the bridge was carrying much heavier loads than it had originally been designed for and had been poorly maintained. The collapsed bridge was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge, which was completed in 1969.

Also, today in 2000, was an the end of an era at the infamous Chernobyl Power Plant. Reactor No. 4 was the site of the Chernobyl disaster in 1986, and the power plant is now within a large restricted area known as the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. βš› Both the zone and the former power plant are administered by the State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management. The three remaining reactors remained operational after the accident; all three were eventually shut down by 2000, and the plant remains in the process of decommissioning as of 2019. Nuclear clean-up is scheduled for completion in 2065.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 45 degrees at 12pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. West wind 6 to 8 mph becoming north in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2021. 9.5 inches of snow fell back in 1981.❄

Planning on riding to the French’s Mills 🚲 and maybe the Pine Bush tomorrow. Should be a good day for a nice ride. Also need to put the hub caps back on my truck. I am thinking either Saturday night to go shopping and get the replacement burner or maybe Sunday morning. Depends how tired I am from lots of biking.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely, mainly after 1pm. β˜” Cloudy, with a high near 47. Southeast wind 7 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

Sunday going to the Nutcracker πŸ‘ͺ with the family, that is after going grocery shopping early in the morning. Then probably bake some bread later on in the day. 🍞 And head to bed fairly early.

Looking ahead to longer days and ultimately summer, next Friday is Days are Getting Longer β˜€οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:27 pm with dusk at 4:57 pm. By then we’ve already gained almost five minutes in the evening. First full day of winter. But probably won’t feel that way. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 34 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 1990.

 Downtown

Inspection day! πŸ”Ž πŸ›»

It always makes me nervous but why I don’t know as Big Red is running well and AFAIK all the lights are working good. Oil change and tire rotation too today. Let the shop get all of those things done at once. I’ll just take off the hub caps.

Good morning! What day is it? Big Red, gets state inspected day, of course. Snow flurries, partly clear and 32 degrees in Delmar, NY. ❄ There is a west-southwest breeze at 8 mph. πŸƒ. Things will start to thaw out at around 8 am. 🌑️

Up at 5 AM to have breakfast of eggs, onions, rice and corn and other veggies. πŸ‘¨‍🍳 The burner element failing this morning was a surprise as it arc flashed when it cracked and shorted, but I’ll replace the burner either today or this weekend. Last night I fried up sweet potatoes with onions and veggies with some left-over turkey from Thanksgiving. πŸ¦ƒ Finishing up that bread I had made up on Monday, I will bake a new loaf tomorrow morning along with cookies for work, and maybe that spaghetti squash. πŸ† Squash is really cheap at Hannaford this week, and I have $5 in points rewards expiring on Friday so I plan to go to Hannaford when I pick up my truck this afternoon.

Dropping the truck off at eight thirty. πŸ›» Pulling the hub caps off now. I forgot to ask for synthetic oil but I’ll ask when I drop the truck off. πŸ›’ Doesn’t matter that much I don’t drive much in the winter. I used to do my own oil changes but by the time I got the oil, struggled to remove the oil filter it wasn’t worth it. Then I’ll walk 🚢 home and get down to work. I’ll start my day working from home, have lunch then spend the remainder of the day working from the library πŸ“š where I don’t have to worry about using too much bandwidth. πŸ“Ά Rush projects continue today, so I’ll be busy. Also want to get to the store after picking my truck up from the shop. I need soap πŸ–οΈ among other things.

Today will have a chance of snow showers, mainly after 11am. Mostly sunny 🌦, with a high of 38 degrees at 12pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 15th. West wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. A year ago, we had sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1984. 14.0 inches of snow fell back in 1915.❄

While cooking 🍳 this morning the large burner quit working. No heat then it started to arc a bright white color where it broke. I could call the landlord πŸ“ž but I’m not going to bother him over a $10 to $20 electric stove element I can just pick up at Home Depot and plug it in. I can see were it cracked, it’s a plug-in and a very standard cheap part. Should also replace the catch basins on the stove too, they’re pretty burnt through again. πŸ«– Figure anytime I call the landlord he’s ultimately going to tack it on my rent so I don’t call unless it’s dire. πŸ’΅ My apartment needs a lot of work but it’s inexpensive and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible. 🏑

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:50 am with sun having an altitude of 24.3° from the due south horizon (-46.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 9 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for snow 🌨 and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 14 mph with gusts up to 28mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 34 seconds over today.

As I do from time to time I check my net worth and retirement accounts. πŸ’° They’re up 33% from three year ago in November. Not the pandemic low but things were still down a bit. I’ve been expanding my bond holdings in recent years but it’s really the stock that have been high flying ✈ these days.πŸ“ˆ That said, I do share people’s concerns that the stock market is overvalued, especially the high-flying seven corporations that dominate the S&P 500 but the way I look at it is while they may go down, and even the market may have a substantial correction, other stocks will be replace them eventually and ultimately the index will grow. I still think broad-spectrum indexing is the way to grow, along with regular steady automated purchases, without regard to any trend. Spread out the risk, stock funds, bond funds, broad-sector funds. I’ve lived through times of up and down on the market πŸ“Š — I am bad and don’t look at much at the market when things go down, but then again I don’t really act on any short term trend. Combined with my better paying job out in the suburbs, I look forward to a brighter tomorrow. I just want to build a secure future for myself, with so much instability in the world today.

Tonight will have a chance of snow showers before 9pm, then a slight chance of rain showers between 9pm and 10pm. Mostly clear πŸŒƒ, with a low of 24 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 12th. Maximum wind chill around 14 at 5am; Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -5 occurred back in 1898.

Took the later local bus home last night 🚌 as I was working on that rush project. Gets me home a half hour later then I would otherwise get home. Not a super big difference, dinner was done by seven and I went out for a walk before coming home to a warm glass of milk with cinnamon and ginger and retiring to bed. β˜• If I take the free shuttle back the plaza with my new job, I’ll be taking the bus home more often, but if I decide to take the Purple Express to downtown, I can probably catch 519 home at the regular time, though that will cost an extra $1.30 a day. Works out to an additional $300 a year, though my new job will pay far more extra then that. But I don’t know, I like saving money, and the free shuttle drops me off in the Plaza which I can spend the half hour getting steps in at the Plaza where it’s warm. I got options to mull over.

Back in 1962, NASA launches Relay 1, the first active repeater communications satellite in orbit. πŸ›°οΈ Nowadays when you look up at night you occasionally see Starlink and that’s quite an impressive amount of satellites in the sky. I’ve heard it’s great for those who live in remote areas and need high speed internet. It’s expensive but if it provides work and puts food on the table it’s pretty neat.

Warm and fairly sunny 🌞 this weekend. Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 45. Still thinking πŸ’ about biking 🚲 down to French’s Mills on Saturday. Sunday, mostly cloudy especially late, with a high near 45. Nutcracker with the family πŸ‘ͺ them. Rain comes in for Monday. β˜” Busing 🚍 it to work Monday. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

 Road Summit

Tuesday, Tuesday. At least I think I can ride to work today πŸ€”

Three weeks from now it will be back to work in the new year. Going to take a few days off before Christmas though that week between Christmas and New Years I’ll have to be in the office downtown to supervise the unit as the other director is off and to pack up my office in preparation for the move. I figure I’ll come by the office after hours when parking is free to move boxes and my plants.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly clear and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. β˜ƒοΈ

Decent enough morning to ride to work. 🚲 Cool but that’s to be expected this time of year. Should be a good ride in. Only a few more days I expect to be able to ride in before it’s too snowy and I’m working out in the suburbs but we’ll see. At least when spring comes I won’t have to be doing the State Street Hill on my bike. 🚍 Plus riding the bike saves a buck thirty and the craziness πŸ€ͺ due to South Swan at the South Maul Arterial being closed due to the water πŸ’¦ main brake. I wonder if that’s fixed yet.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 2nd. South wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970.❄

Just another work day. Rush project today. Should be a fairly busy day but it will make time go by quickly. Tomorrow is the annual work from home day, 🏑 I guess it’s part of the holiday celebration and allows people to bake cookies for cookie share day on Thursday. πŸͺ

Last night had a nice dinner. 🍲 That bean soup and bread was good last night but kept my stomach rumbling throughout the night. Had a bunch of Acorn Squash. Went for my evening walk 🚢. Got milk πŸ₯› last night which was good with the coffee β˜• and cranberry pancakes πŸ₯ž this morning. Added shredded oranges to the top with some honey. 🍯Up at five o’clock ⏰ and then did some more of my class on artifical intelligence 🧠 and neural networks.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:50 am with sun having an altitude of 24.3Β° from the due south horizon (-46.5Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. At sunset, look for clear skies πŸŒ„ and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 39 seconds over today.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 30 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 22nd. South wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1988.

Tomorrow my truck gets inspected, oil changed and tires rotated. πŸ›»Working from home then. Baking cookies for bake cookies day at work. πŸͺ I need to pull the hub caps off, I was going to do that this morning but I can do it tomorrow. I’m not worried, 😯 I think Big Red should pass inspection with ease.πŸ”ŽThe truck needs to be dropped off at the garage by 8:30 then I’ll ride home 🚲 and work from home or maybe the library depending on how much bandwidth I need.

Today, Pennsylvania becomes the second state to ratify the United States Constitution, πŸ“œ five days after Delaware became the first on this day in 1787. It’s a nice document but only as good as the politicians and those appointed by the politicians that enforce it.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 43. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Thinking of riding out to French’s Mills and or the Pine Bush Preserve on Saturday. 🚲 🌲

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Boxing Day πŸ₯Š when the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. Popular day for burning πŸ”₯ all those Christmas boxes I guess. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 30 and 16 degrees. It’s a state holiday for me – Christmas Eve Observed I guess due to it being om a Sunday for folks traveling. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.

This Morning At The Bus Stop

More Gluten Monday 🍞

What can I say. Adding that vital wheat gluten to my whole wheat bread added some extra fluff and it really made things less crumbly with much better texature. I’ll see how it holds up over the next few days, as I slowly slice off slices to dip in soup, make french toast and enjoy dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Good morning! Monday’s come back around again. β˜” Hope you know where your umbrella is and your windshield wipers work during this dire emergency winter storm, comma lol. Rain and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌧️ There is a northwest breeze at 11 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 9 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

Taking the express bus 🚍 in on this rainy β˜” morning. Not the early one either, as by the time I was done cooking πŸ§‘πŸ»‍🍳 and getting ready it was a no go for the earlier express. I’m not super excited about doing a lot of walking 🚢 this morning, though I’ll try to get in my steps πŸ‘£ for the day, maybe even if that means bundling up and going for the evening walk. Going to be cold by evening especially with the wind. 🌬️

There is a closure through the Empire State Plaza tunnels due to a water πŸ’¦ main β›‘ break which might cause delays but I don’t care I’m not driving 🚘 and it’s not a big deal if I’m a few minutes late. Looks like the driver is taking an alternative route through the city to avoid traffic. It’s not like next year when I’ll be transferring to the shuttle πŸš€ bus out to the suburban office. I do miss riding in on my bike but not with the cold and wet rain. 🚲 Tomorrow I’ll be back riding to work. January is going to be tough on the biking, due to the cold and inevitable snow on the trail, not to mention it’s not safe to be riding Water Street after dark in the evening.

Today will rain and snow before 11am, then a slight chance of rain between 11am and noon. 🌞 High of 41 degrees at 12pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 8th. Breezy, with a northwest wind 11 to 16 mph increasing to 17 to 22 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 39 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Little or no snow accumulation expected. I’m sure at some point we’ll have snow. 🌨 A year ago, we had light snow throughout the day. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1952. 4.3 inches of snow fell back in 1970.❄

Adding the vital wheat 🌾 gluten to my 100% whole wheat bread added a tad bit more fluff to the bread but it didn’t make it as light as white bread. 🍞 Did make things stick together a lot better though for better slicing and texture. I bet it will hold up better in my bean soup.πŸ› I’ll have to experiment with different amounts of yeast again but ultimately whole wheat is going to whole wheat. I wouldn’t say though it’s a flat bread as it was much more fluffy then what I had. White bread might be a lot more fluffy but it’s less healthy. I guess a reasonable compromise might be whole-white wheat, which is whole grain but the white wheat rather then the slightly more protein rich red wheat.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:49 am with sun having an altitude of 24.4° from the due south horizon (-46.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 4 seconds later than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 37 degrees. The wind chill around sunset will be 26. β˜ƒοΈ Breezy, 22 mph breeze β›… from the west-northwest with gusts up to 38mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 42 seconds over today.

Looking forward to tonight with the bean soup and bread. 🍞 🍲 It should be a good evening, but cold with the wind. But I want to walk at any rate, I’ll bundle up. 🚢‍♀️ Then settle back down home under the heated blanket. Not super cold tonight, but it will be windy. But it could be a lot colder — look at the record low of negative 12.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a low of 28 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 29th. Maximum wind chill around 22 at 5am; Northwest wind 7 to 15 mph becoming south after midnight. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1988.

I was noticing that Price Chopper has raw walnuts for sale 🌰 πŸŽ… which might be a lot of fun when I go camping next week to roast over an open fire. I am still thinking of heading out to Madison County in the lead-up to the Christmas Holiday but it really depends on how much snow there is. ❄️ Right now there is quite a bit of snow but I think much of it might melt by next weekend. I could do Stoney Pond or the Charles Baker Horse Camp. I know the mountain bike trails are closed but I can hike or ride the roads. 🚴‍♀️

Today in 1997, The Kyoto Protocol opens for signature. 🌎 The US would never ratify the agreement, and while some countries would participate, it was a lot of talk and not a lot of action. Every year the earth gets a little bit warmer and it ain’t because I drive a big jacked up truck πŸ›» or burn those Styrofoam egg cartons I stuff in my trash and ultimately the fire. πŸ”₯ Seriously though we are making some technological progress but things are still going in the wrong direction as the population increases and every year we burn more fossil fuel.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. I am thinking Saturday of doing a bicycle ride out to the Albany Pine Bush — and maybe taking the bus back home after dark, after doing some maul walking or similar activities, just to see how crazy it is. I think I can go past the Industrial Depot and the Guilderland National Guard Rifle Range to Willow Street and out from there. Then mountain bike 🚡‍♀️ around the Pine Bush. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. 🌞 Sunday, I am going to a family event watching the Nutcracker πŸ‘ͺ and then out to dinner. Not too bad for the weekend before Christmas 🀢. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees.

Looking ahead, next Monday is Bake Cookies Day πŸͺ when the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm with dusk at 4:55 pm. I got to bake cookies actually on Wednesday for the Cookie Share Day in the office on Thursday. I am thinking homemade cranberry-sugar cookies, going to try making with whole-wheat flour and stevia along with butter, so they aren’t quite as much junk food. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 35 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 37 degrees. We hit a record high of 60 back in 1921.

Gorge

Made it to the weekend, today should be nice, tomorrow who knows πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Maybe nice is an exaggeration but it will be mild by mid December standards but fairly cloudy. I think it will be a good day to ride and stay close to home, at least not drive anywhere. Tomorrow I can shop I figure before going out to the folks house in the driving rain.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 40 degrees in Delmar. ☁ There is a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. πŸƒ. There is a inch of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ ️Temperatures will drop below freezing at Monday around 10 pm. β˜ƒοΈ

Made a nice breakfast cake up with oatmeal, cranberries, bananas and pineapple 🍍. Drank a lot of coffee β˜• but I’m good as I’m not planning an ambitious day though later on as it warms up I’m thinking about a bike 🚲 ride out to Voorheesville and maybe later on to French’s Mills or Altamont. There is a lot of places I haven’t explored on my bicycle around and even some local preserves that I can’t be bothered to drive to but are within biking range.

Today will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 49 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 17th. South wind 7 to 14 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with sunny skies in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1966. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 2009.❄

I won’t say it will be a banner weekend β˜” especially as the rain comes tomorrow but I’ll make the best of it. I decided against the Salvation Army this weekend, it’s a bit of a drive and I am okay πŸ‘Œ on clothes truth be told and I don’t love riding the sand trails in the Pine Bush that much. 🌲🌲 I kind of want to get to Indian Ladder Farms for some apples 🍏. I’d prefer Altamont Orchards but that’s a pretty long bike ride. Maybe I’ll just wait to I get groceries tomorrow. πŸ–₯ Kind of want to get to the library to use the Wi-Fi too this afternoon. πŸ“Ά

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:49 am with sun having an altitude of 24.6Β° from the due south horizon (-46.2Β° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231Β°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239Β°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is one second earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies πŸŒƒ and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 51 seconds over today.

Finally finished that course on Categorizing and Classification of Data Using Machine Learning in R. πŸ€– OK course, but I’ve wish they explained the pros and cons of the different methods better but I’ve previously read up on that. πŸ§‘β€πŸ« I’ll probably eventually study a Python course on the same topic but first I’m studying Artificial Neural Networks for Business Managers in R Studio. I can’t complain too much, all these classes are free with my Bethlehem Public Library card πŸ“š unlike many who pay for them. I doubt the instruction quality, at least of this last class would be something I’d pay for. But I still learned how to do a lot of it in R that I previously only knew concepts but not the R packages and code to implement.

Maybe I should cut back on the turmeric. That 6.2 oz bottle I bought last Sunday is third eaten already. πŸ§‚ My teeth could yellow and folks think I’m a smoker, lol. That said I shouldn’t have to worry much about tooth plaque or gingivitis. 🦷I just like my food yellow and tasty plus I never have any aches anymore despite climbing all the those stairs and riding all those miles. There are days when every meal 🍴 involves tumeric starting with the fried onions and eggs 🍳 in the morning.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain after 4am. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 40 degrees at 2am. 16 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 20th. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -4 occurred back in 1902.

Trying to keep costs down this weekend as after my credit card πŸ’³ bill is paid I’ll only have $350 left in my bank account to tide my over until I get paid the following work week. πŸ’Έ Heck of it is looking at my second to last paystub of the year I made more then I expected? So much money is going out the door πŸšͺ to retirement and investing plus inflation keeps taking a bigger chunk each time I shop for groceries. πŸͺ I’m hopeful with my new job next year I’ll make a little more money but with inflation that doesn’t go the way it once would have. I think πŸ€” I’ll do good work in the new job despite my fear 😱 of messing up πŸ’£ and the inconvenience of transferring buses 🚍 to get there days I can’t mountain bike it. Plus I’m making like $75 a month in ad revenue on the blog.

Today in 1958, the John Birch Society is founded. Businessman and founder Robert W. Welch Jr. (1899–1985) developed an organizational infrastructure in 1958 of chapters nationwide. 🍬 After an early rise in membership and influence,πŸ₯Έ efforts by those such as conservative William F. Buckley Jr. and National Review led the JBS to be identified as a fringe element of the conservative movement, πŸͺ° mostly in fear of the radicalization of the American right. πŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«

Looking ahead, next Saturday is Tea Party Day 🐍 when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had snow and temperatures between 35 and 33 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2021. Never got into drinking much tea 🍡. I do like my warm glass of milk before bed πŸ› on a cold night with some vanilla, ginger and lots of cinnamon though.

Under the Agency Building

Maybe riding in yesterday wasn’t advisable 🌨 🚲

I had no issues but things were kind of slick on the way home to and from the bus stop on heavy braking and more of a concern what how much road salt got on my bike riding on the front of the bus coming home last night. I guess I didn’t expect the snow to continue on and off all day yesterday and the roads to be wet and slushy come evening commute. That said it’s not going to be much longer I’m riding to work until it’s lighter in the evening and the bike trail is snow free.

Good morning! Yeah, it’s Friday! Survived another week, it’s not been a bad one. Day by day. Cloudy and 28 degrees in Delmar. ☁ Calm wind. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. β˜ƒ Really aren’t going to make a snowman with that. ️Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌑️

Ridden to work all five days this week. 🚲 Not too bad, a few days had to use some due care and the front break is squeaking a bit from the road salt. I should wash and grease the bike good this week. Only the ride in due to darkness in the evening, but that’s fine. Only a few more weeks, as I’m afraid January will be too cold or snowy, plus the issue of taking the shuttle with my bike on it, although I could instead use CDTA. Come the spring though, I expect except on rainy days I’ll be riding in each day. πŸ˜€ An no more State Street Hill but a longer ride.

Today will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 38 degrees at 1pm. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 15th. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 58 was set in 1927. 4.3 inches of snow fell back in 2001.❄

Just kind of a bleak early to mid-December day weather wise. πŸŽ„ I think part of the reason they celebrate the holidays this time of year is to overcome the darkness that is upon us. That said, come Sunday we start gaining daylight in the evening, with the 5 PM sunset returning by the end of January. β›„ While I am still planning one or two more camping trips this year, I’m kind of bummed out about not being able to ride to work in a few weeks. But it’s fine, those days of wearing a suit and tie πŸ‘” aren’t that far off either.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:48 am with sun having an altitude of 24.7° from the due south horizon (-46.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 3 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for mostly cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 37 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 5 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 11 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 55 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ☁️, with a low of 31 degrees at 12am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 19th. South wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2022, we had clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -11 occurred back in 1902.

In 1963, Pan Am Flight 214, a Boeing 707, is struck by lightning and crashes near Elkton, Maryland, killing all 81 people on board. 🌩✈️ As the flight approached Philadelphia, the pilots made radio contact with air traffic control near Philadelphia at 8:42 pm. The controller informed the pilots that the airport was experiencing a line of thunderstorms in the vicinity, accompanied by strong winds and turbulence. The controller asked whether the pilots wanted to proceed directly to the airport or to enter a holding pattern to wait for the storm to pass. The crew elected to remain at 5,000 feet (1,500 m) in a holding pattern with five other aircraft. The controller told the pilots that the delay would last about 30 minutes. At 8:58 pm, the aircraft exploded.[6] The pilots were able to transmit a final message: “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY. Clipper 214 out of control. Here we go.” Seconds later, the first officer of National Airlines Flight 16, holding 1,000 feet higher in the same holding pattern, radioed, “Clipper 214 is going down in flames.”The aircraft crashed at 8:59 pm in a corn field east of Elkton, Maryland, near the Delaware Turnpike, setting the rain-soaked field on fire. The aircraft was completely destroyed, and all of the occupants were killed. A lot has improved in lightening and airplane safety since then. I think pilots generally try to avoid thunderstorms and turbulence these days, and radar is far better then it once was.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy πŸŒ₯, with a high of 45 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 39 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1966. 7.3 inches of snow fell back in 2009.❄

Saturday plans are to be decided. πŸ’ I am of two minds. I would like to get the Salvation Army to look at clothes but I also don’t want to get a bunch of salt on my truck or have to gas it up. β›½ Then do some riding on my mountain bike in the Albany Pine Bush and get groceries. πŸ›’ But I guess I’m okay with clothes for now, though I’d like to get some dressy stuff for wearing come January that fits well. πŸ‘” Often I can find good things now that I’m so much slimmer. On the other hand, I could stay home, go for a nice long bike ride, maybe make some soup and then be home before dark and do more of the Udemy Machine Learning Course.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain. 🌧 High near 55. South wind 11 to 16 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 40 degrees. It looks like the rain will be heavy enough that I won’t have to worry about much salt on the road at that point, and if anything any salt I get on my truck will be mostly washed off by the heavy rain. Not that I guess it makes much difference. Going shopping in the morning πŸ›’ would give me something to do and then go out to folks house later πŸ‘ͺ as I don’t think Sunday will be a good day for anything outdoors. β˜”

Looking, next Friday is Bill of Rights Day πŸ“œ when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. As I often point out, the constitution is not self-enforcing. It’s all a matter of quality of judges and the politicians people elect. Politicians and even judges ignore the law all of the time when it’s inconvenient and they have the power to get around it. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, sleet and temperatures between 33 and 16 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2015.

Gray morning

A Rainy Sunday Ahead 🌧️

It could be snow but not with El Niño and the jet stream in its current position. At least we’re not expecting to get as socked by rain as the southern states in the coming weeks.

Good morning! Happy Wet Sunday. Yes, clouds ☁️and 40 degrees in Delmar. Rain coming soon. β˜” There is a north-northeast breeze at 5 mph. πŸƒ. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 9 pm. β˜ƒοΈ Still another pretty mild day, saving on the heat being off. I don’t know why I worry so much about heating bills, as they only work out in the coldest months to be like $30 over the normal non-heating bills, but I do. ♨️ It’s not like I don’t make good money, though I’m always broke as I’m stashing so much in the market and for retirement. But I just don’t like seeing my money go up into smoke, πŸ’¨ says the boy who drives a big jacked up truck that has a drinking problem. β›½

Yesterday wasn’t a real productive day, πŸ“š the biggest thing I did was go down to the library for a while to work on my laptop πŸ’» and then reheat some chilli and cook some kidney beans. Like yesterday, this morning I baked a breakfast cake with oatmeal, whole-wheat flour, an egg, stevia, two bananas and cranberries. Good breakfast, super moist, really like a cake. 🍰 Been doing a lot more cooking with cranberries as they’re dirt cheap this time of year — $1.50 for a large bag, and quite delicious. Been continuing on that machine learning course, πŸ€– now that I’m in the deep dive into principal component analysis, really starting to learn a lot more. The course I’m learning is primarily about using R packages for machine learning, but most of the techniques could be used with Python. I probably would learn Python and scikitlearn for machine learning, but I feel like I know R better these days as that’s what I constantly use, as like the maggitr pipes and ggplot graphics output.

Today will have showers likely before 8am, then rain, mainly after 8am. 🌧 High of 44 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 29th. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had rain in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 53 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 2009. 5.2 inches of snow fell back in 1893.❄

After showering this morning, πŸ›€ heading to Walmart to get groceries for the week, probably around 9 AM before the crowds get there. The big thing is spices, but also frozen fruits and vegetables, plus the usual like another container of oatmeal as I used that up making breakfasts, pancakes and bread. πŸ›’ Making a list this time in hope that I won’t forget things, though chances are good at least some of things on my list won’t be in stock, as it always happens. Then I want to wash the kitchen floor, do some cleaning and straightening up.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:46 am with sun having an altitude of 25.3° from the due south horizon (-45.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour πŸ… starts at 3:39 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). πŸ“Έ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 21 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 16 seconds earlier than yesterday. πŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a east breeze at 6 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 16 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 14 seconds over today.

This afternoon heading out to the folks house 🍲 for some turkey soup and the Sunday dinner. Just going to be kind of a rainy day, but I figure get home early then I’ll have time to make up bread 🍞 and soak beans or maybe peas in preparation for making soup come the morning. Then that will be Monday’s dinner. Been working on slowly but surely eating up some of the food I previously frozen but also making sure to maintain balanced meals each day. And maybe some time to read πŸ“– before heading to bed pretty early. No need to stay up late on such a dreary day.

Tonight will rain, mainly before midnight. 🌧 Low of 39 degrees at 6am. 13 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 23rd. South wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 25 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1940.

Yesterday I was thumbing through some properties and land on Zillow. 🏘 So much is that suburban crap with marble countertops and neighbors. It’s hard to find nice pieces of land with acreage. Not that I’m seriously thinking of buying at this point but it can be fun during downtime. That said, moving to the suburban office with free parking, makes it more tempting to think about moving back out to country. Plus I’ll be making more money at my new job, but I think that’s putting the cart before the wagon, because who knows how it will work out or how I’ll like it. It’s a big step forward though. But for now, I’ll probably stay in my apartment. It’s inexpensive, even if it is run down. I have my fun getting away and camping in the wilderness. πŸ• Looking forward to getting away again in two and a half weeks on the run up to the Christmas holiday.

As previously noted, next Sunday is 7:15 AM Sunrise βŒ›οΈ when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 31 and 20 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 40 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.
