Camping Areas in Southern Adirondacks ⛺

East Branch of Sacanadaga River, NY 8 – Roughly 10 campsites along NY 8. These are easily accessed throughout the year, as the road is plowed except when the snow banks are high during the winter. East Branch is not good for fishing due to wide variance in water levels, however there are some nice pools in sections of river for summer swimming. Lots of road noise. Some of the sites have cell service. Nearby locations include Cod Pond, East Branch Trail and Kibby Pond Trail.

Edick Road – There are a handful of very hidden campsites off of Edick Road. This road may be closed to vehicles due to wash outs autumn 2019, but worth a walk to explore this area.

Fawn Lake – A 1/2 mile hike back to a scenic lake ringed by primitive campsites outside of Lake Pleasant. Two miles beyond it is the scenic Willis Vly, which doesn’t have developed campsites but it’s remote wilderness where you might see a Moose or other wildlife.

Garnet Lake – Tent sites, some with drive-up access along the lake. No cell service, much of the upper road here is not maintained in the winter. Popular in the summer, no cell service.

Good Luck Lake – Scenic lake off of the West Branch Sacanadaga River that is ringed with tent sites that can be walked in from the Good Luck Lake parking area area or paddled in.

Hope Falls Road – Two or three campsites along the end of Hope Falls Road, some are drive-in only tent sites. Near the Tenant Creek Falls Trail. No cell service. Open June to autumn snowfall.

Harrisburg Road – There is a set of very rustic designated campsites along the rough Harrisburg Road past Harrisburg Lake. Somewhat near Crane Mountain, a couple mile hike to and Wilcox Lake. No cell service.

Lester Flow and Cheney Pond – Scenic lake that is popular for paddling. The 1/2 mile road down from Boreas Road as of June 2020 is closed due to washouts. Tent sites exist along the lake, along with one drive-to site on the road down there.

Mason Lake – Small lake located about 10 miles north of Speculator and 5 miles south of Lewey Lake that has several tent and drive-in campsites along it’s shore. Good to fair cell service here. Nice to hear loons, one of the best bass ponds in the area.

North Lake Reservoir – There are roughly 15 campsites on the east shore of North Lake Reservoir. Popular place in the summer, regularly staffed by conservation students. Noise from motorboats. No cell service. Nice if you want to camp right on water, hear loons at night..

Northwood Club Road – In Minerva, this road crosses the Boreas River and has several roadside campsites, and passes by Huntley Pond, the NL Tahawus Railroad (which can be hiked to the Boreas River at Hudson River), and the Blue Ledges on the Hudson tailhead.

Perkins Clearing – Conservation easement lands. Good to fair cell service here. Great place for hunting and wildlife observation as it’s mixed timber country. Near Mason Lake, Speculator, Pillsbury Mountain and Cedar Lakes.

Piseco-Powley Road – A dozen campsites along a 13 mile road with short hikes including Big Alderbed, House Pond, Sand Lake and the popular Potholers/Brayhouse Brook waterfall for swimming. As of June 2020, road is closed in Stratford/Fulton County portion, road is open north of Potholers/Brayhouse Brook (access via Piseco). Very limited cell service here.

Pumpkin Hollow Road – Three campsites above Willis Lake. Remote country except for the site on Willis Lake, no cell service. On the Willis – Wilcox Lake Trail. Very quiet area. Open June to autumn snowfall. No cell service here.

Rockwood State Forest – Three campsites along the end of Church Road which can be accessed by driving past the cemetery in the hamlet. Scenic lake, good fishing. Cell service available, but bring a trash bucket and gloves as litter can be a problem. Nice trails to stroll around in the old Rockwood Estate.

Stewart Landing – There are four campsites on a rough road that loops off of Stewart Landing Road. Popular area in the summer, Canada Lake is great for paddling and informal swimming. Also consider hiking back to Hilderbrandt Vly and Glassgow Lake from here. Moderate to poor cell service here.

Vanderwhacker Road -Five or six campsites exist along Vanderwhacker Road, which can be muddy in the spring and icy in late autumn. Additional designates campsites exist near where NY 28N crosses the Vanderwhacker River. Near the trail to the Vanderwhacker Firetower, No cell service.

White House, Wells – A grouping of 5 or 6 campsites at the end of White House in West River Road. Scenic area, old camp, with fields and a chimney. Campsites are kind of close together, not a wilderness experience. Near the North Country Placid Trail, lots of blueberries in mid-summer. No cell service. Open June to autumn snowfall.

Woodhull Lake Reservoir – Off of NY 28 in McKeevers, about 10 miles south of Old Forge. Not only is this beautiful reservoir to paddle, there are some campsites along the shore, with drive-to campsites along Wolf Lake Landing Road which leads to it. Part of Wolf Lake Landing Road is erroded, but other parts are fresh stone-dust. It’s remote wilderness but there good cell service in mcuh of the area.

Last week I got an email requesting a list of lean-tos on state land that have full accomindations - that is an outhouse or pit privy. So I made up that list, and figured I'd share it as some might find it useful.

August 31, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 53 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. Starry night 🌃, beautiful looking up at the starry skies but no northern lights.😍 Calm wind. The dew point is 48 degrees. Cool but in my hoodie not too bad. I brought the propane heater ♨ for the cold mornings but so far I haven’t used it. Maybe tomorrow though it will be nice with a hot cup of coffee. ☕

I thought today was a good day. 🚶 It was nice hiking Pillsbury Mountain, it’s been eight years since I last done it. I was up there for an hour with nobody else around. First time ever going back to Cedar Lake in the West Canada Lakes Wilderness, it’s an area that I want to explore more. 🐸 The trails back there are pretty good and not real steep. I really should spend more nights back in the wilderness but I do like the ease of truck cap camping. I was happy 😊 that I didn’t run into many crowds back there although there was a couple 👫 camping ⛺ back at Cedar Lake but I headed to a different part of the lake for solitude.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 45 degrees at 3am. 12 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 30th. Light north wind. In 2018, we had light rain in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 66 degrees. The record low of 41 occurred back in 1967.

Tonight will have a Waxing Crescent Moon 🌒 with 10% illuminated. The moon will rise at 8:50 am. The First Quarter Moon is on Wednesday night with partly cloudy skies. The Harvest Moon 🌝 is on Friday, September 13th. The sun will rise at 6:21 am with the first light at 5:51 am, which is one minute and 6 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 10 hours and 47 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 68 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 25th. Maximum dew point of 52 at 6pm. Light and variable wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 79 degrees. The record high of 96 was set in 1953.

I might just hang out at camp tomorrow ⛺ with a good book 📙 in the hammock or I could go hiking again. 🚶 Small game season opens tomorrow for squirrel,🐀 but we will see. I could drive over to Mason Lake and do some fishing 🎣 or maybe up to Watch Hill and hike it 🚶. Probably though will stay in camp, maybe see if I could drop some tree rats but I’ll see.

Tomorrow night is going to be quite wet based on the current model 💦but hopefully the rain will hold off until late. I’d like to enjoy a nice Sunday and then just overnight in the truck cap and head home early on Labor Day. This campsite is well drained so I’m not worried about mud by there also is no practical way to hang up tarps here.

In four weeks on September 28 the sun will be setting at 6:43 pm,🌄 which is 50 minutes and 43 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 62 and 52 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 67 and 46 degrees. The record high of 83 degrees was set back in 2014.

Looking ahead, Average High 70 🎑 is in 3 weeks.

August 31, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Where did Summer go? Trump must have stolen it away. 😔 Three weeks to Average High 70 🎑. Autumn is coming. Mostly sunny and 49 degrees at the Perkins Clearing. Calm wind. With the sun it doesn’t feel that cold though. ☀

I ended up deciding to go up to that campsite I like up in Perkins Clearing in the Adirondacks. ⛺ I did drive up to an swing by Fox Lair but that campsite was taken and I honestly didn’t want to listen to the road noise all weekend long. I thought I stop by at any rate. This campsite has good views of the skies so it’s nice on starry nights 🌃 although I don’t know how I’ll string up a tarp should it rain on Sunday. My guess is that I probably won’t.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 67 degrees at 3pm. 11 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 28th. That said it is usually colder up north. Maximum dew point of 48 at 9am. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. It became somewhat humid as the day progressed. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 1953.

Today I’m planning on either hiking back to Pillsbury Lake or Pillsbury Mountain. 🗻 I am a bit undecided on that point. I’ve done Pillsbury Mountain before but there are nice views from the fire tower. Nice cool and clear day to boot. I just got to finish securing camp, change, and I should be on the trail by ten o’clock.

The sun will set at 7:34 pm with dusk around 8:03 pm, which is one minute and 45 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 61 degrees. The dew point will be 46 degrees. There will be a north-northwest breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 13 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog after 4am. Otherwise, partly cloudy 🌃, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. 14 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 5th. Light north wind. I got these really nice sunglasses 😎 from Walmart. While they are all plastic, they are lightweight but not overly dark and have good coverage over the eyes. 👀 You can almost forget that you are wearing them.

I finished reading 📖 Paul Theroux’s Deep South. What a great book. It makes me want to explore the rural south, especially the Ozarks and Missouri which seems like some really wild country with few restrictions on guns 🔫 or open burning. 🔥 Plus they are very friendly towards farming, 🐮 homesteading 🐷and off grid living. 🏡

On this day in 1965, Super Guppy took it’s first flight. ✈ The aero Spacelines Super Guppy is a large, wide-bodied cargo aircraft that is used for hauling outsize cargo components. It was the successor to the Pregnant Guppy, the first of the Guppy aircraft produced by Aero Spacelines, which in turn was named for its resemblance to a pregnant guppy. Five were built in two variants, both of which were colloquially referred to as the “Super Guppy”. Now crank up that Steve Miller record, Jet Liner. 🎶

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High 70 🎑 when the sun will be setting at 6:56 pm with dusk at 7:24 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 71 and 65 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 70 degrees. We hit a record high of 95 back in 1895.

May 27, 2019 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 62 degrees in Dormansville, NY. There is a north breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 49 degrees. Sleeping in the truck once again tonight at my parents house. 😴 Enjoy this beautiful evening while it lasts, we might be in for a period of unstable weather once again for the week.☁ Clouds and rain tomorrow, once again.

It was a pretty decent weekend up in the Green Mountains, bar my hammock ripping into two, the black flies, and forgetting to pack extra socks. 🧦 I was sure I had the socks with me, and I started to paw through my pack on Thursday night, and I just assumed they were burred in my pack. Frustrating through. I’ve started to use a packing list before camping, but i didn’t have a printed copy of the list to check off when I started packing on Wednesday night, as Thursday was busy with the Pine Bush event.✍ So be it. The black flies weren’t truly bad until it got really sunny and nice this morning, but I had a nice drive down Forest Road 71 on this sunny morning, and I got home relatively early to unpack.💼

Hiking the Stratton Mountain, Stratton Pond loop sure was exhausting but well worth it in my opinion.🚶 It got my goal of doing something new and different at camp and the change was special even if the 12 or 13 mile walk caused by me missing Winhall River trail made it exhausting. I got to see some new and different trails,⛰ the other side of Stratton Pond and even the summit of Stratton was enjoyable as it’s the first time I’ve hiked it in six years. Been kind of achy and sore all day today, but I’m sure in a few day I’ll be feeling better or I should go to the doctor prior to June 1st when the Health Insurance deductibles go up. 😷 We need universal healthcare, ain’t that obvious.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 49 degrees at 5am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. North wind 5 to 8 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 53 degrees. The record low of 33 occurred back in 1994.

Tonight will have a Waning Crescent Moon 🌘 with 27% illuminated. The moon will rise at 2:44 am. The New Moon is on Sunday night with scattered showers. The Strawberry Moon 🌝 is on Sunday, June 16th. The sun will rise at 5:23 am with the first light at 4:49 am, which is 39 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 9 hours of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 29 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will rain likely before 11am, then periods of rain and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 4pm, then occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. 🌦 High of 58 degrees at 12pm. 15 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 15th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 4pm. 🏖️ Southeast wind 5 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 74 degrees. The record high of 93 was set in 2016. There was a dusting of snow in 1902.❄

Tomorrow I should pick up my dry cleaning, 👕 and maybe I should think about trying to get up to LL Bean to see if they will once again exchange my broken hammock. Well, if I paid a premium for the hammock, well with my card rewards, and they have a wonderful lifetime guarantee, they should replace it, because I don’t think I did anything to kill it besides flopping in it after being tired hiking. If they don’t replace it for free (again — the carbinaner snapped on the first one I got), I’ll get another brand, because I really want to do more hammock camping. I also want get the battery box and maybe the marine battery for my second battery I plan to install in the truck, in my cap, giving me extra storage for cloudy days up at camp. Then I should be able to be 100% solar for all my camp electrical needs.

Right now, next weekend looks cool but sunny. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 51 at 6pm. Sunny and low humidity. No complaints there. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Maximum dew point of 56 at 1pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 74 degrees. Things could definitely change by then.

I plan to stay in town next weekend, although things could change my mind.🤔 For example, if it looked like it was going to exceptionally hot out, I might consider going up to the Potholers, but not necessarily. Instead, I have a lot of projects I’d like to work on at home, including wiring up and mounting the second accessory battery in the cap of my truck.🔋 I don’t imagine that project will take more then about an hour, but who knows. I might also have some work stuff I have to do next weekend.

But maybe the following weekend I’ll get out of town — I’m hoping by then that Jessup River Road will be open, then I might camp on Hardwood Hill then hike back on Saturday on one of the trails into the West Canada Lake Wilderness back to Pillsbury Lake from Sled Harbor and then on Sunday paddle around Speculator. 🏕 If I camp up there, I’ll have good cellphone service for any work matters that come up. Plus I love the views from the campsite — assuming the road is open for the spring, and that campsite is not taken.

In four weeks on June 24 the sun will be setting at 8:37 pm,🌄 which is 14 minutes and 33 seconds later then tonight. Latest sunset of the year or pretty darn close to it. Almost all of the time — except for 2 minutes — we gain over the next few weeks will be in the evening, as earth wobble brings the transit of the sun closer to 1 PM. In 2018 on that day, we had rain and temperatures between 76 and 61 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 80 and 59 degrees. The record high of 96 degrees was set back in 1943.

Amazing to think in four weeks, we will be well into summer, but that’s what happens when Memorial Day Weekend comes to a close. Maybe that weekend I’ll be in Schoharie County, and can camp at Burnt Rossman after spending all day at the Mine Kill State Park pool.🏊🏿

Delightful Fall Hikes

Pillsbury Mountain (Central Adirondacks).

Located in the Jessup River Wild Forest, North of Spectulator, offers great views of West Canada Wilderness, Cedar River Flow, Moose River Plains, Spectulator Tree Farm, Siamese Pond Wilderness. Should be close to peak foliage now. Consider camping at the roadside/tent campsites along Mason Lake to the North on Jessup River Road / NY 30. Take NY 30 to Jessup River Road to Military Road to Parking Area to get there. You may want to park at the start of Military Road if you have a low-clearance vehicle.
