SUNY Administration Tower

It still is pretty bleak looking down here at the Corning Preserve, but it won't be long until things green up, especially with 80 degrees being predicted for Monday.

April 17, 2019 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 55 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌃 Calm wind. Being such a relatively nice night, I’m sitting out back in the moonlight, listening to the spring peepers 🐸 which seem quieter tonight compared to some nights. Air kind of smells faintly like barnyard, it’s spring so the farm down the road must be spreading manure or at least working the dirt in the fields.

Today was another busy but good day at work. 💼 Definitely less crazy than yesterday. I’m glad I have Good Friday off as lately I’ve been tired as my sleep has been pretty poor. 😴 I was hoping getting to bed early would help but I still find myself waking up a lot at night. I just find myself increasingly discontent and worried about both my future and that of the world. 🌎 I’m trying to do more and more everyday though to improve my own life even if I can’t fix the many problems of the world I see around me.

The Save the Pine Bush Dinner was pretty good, listening to Lou Ismay give what may be his last presentation to Save the Pine Bush was interesting. 🎤 He’s gotten older for sure but he did much for the environment and the Albany community over his many years running the SUNY PYE Club. Lasagna was fairly good although this month I didn’t get to take any home. No delicious smelling lunch at work although I usually do end up cooking something good most days.

Tonight will have a chance of showers, mainly after 3am. Increasing clouds 🌃, with a low of 44 degrees at 5am. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around May 4th. A fairly mild night. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 9 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1948.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous Moon 🌔 with 99% illuminated. The moon will set at 6:05 am. The Pink Moon 🌕 will be tomorrow. I hope you have your rose colored glasses to wear. 👓 The sun will rise at 6:09 am with the first light at 5:40 am, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 10 hours and 28 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers, mainly before 8am. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 58 degrees at 2pm. Two degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 15th. Breezy, with a south wind 16 to 23 mph, with gusts as high as 33 mph. That wind will make it feel much colder. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1976. 2.7 inches of snow fell back in 1887.❄

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap for Easter. 😞 Saturday, rain and possibly a thunderstorm before 2pm, then showers likely after 2pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rain. High near 67. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Maximum dew point of 59 at 6am. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 64. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 48 at 6am. Typical average high for the weekend is 61 degrees.

I haven’t packed my camping gear yet ⛺ so I have no real plans for the weekend except maybe Easter dinner at the folks house. 🐰 In two weeks though I really hope to be out camping again. The weather has moderated a lot, the snow is almost entirely gone from the East Branch area, and now it’s just a matter of waiting for some sunny days.

In four weeks on May 15 the sun will be setting at 8:11 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 8 seconds later then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny, rain showers and temperatures between 77 and 56 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 69 and 47 degrees. The record high of 93 degrees was set back in 1900.

Looking ahead, May 🕊 is in 2 weeks, Pack Rat Day 🐀 is a month away, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 7 weeks, Primary Day 🗳️ is in 10 weeks, Altamont Fair Opens 🎡 is in 17 weeks, State Fair Opens 🎡 is in 18 weeks, September 11th 🇸 is in 21 weeks, Constitution Day 📜 is in 5 months, More Night then Day 🌌 is in 23 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 👴🏻 is in 92 weeks.

Across Crane Pond to Crane Pond Hill

April 17, 2019 Morning

Good morning! What day is it? Save the Pine Bush Dinner Day, of course. 😋 Should be a good one with lasagna and the SUNY Albany Protect Your Environment Club 🌎 from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Two weeks to May 🕊. Enjoy it before the black flies are out. Mostly sunny and 44 degrees at Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. Calm wind. It’s warmed up quickly on this certain to be nice spring day. 🐝

It was a pleasant walk down to the express bus. 🚌 Lately the drivers have been parked at the bus stop early which gives me a little more time to work on blog posts as I wait to head downtown✍. Lots of sun, smooth commute downtown, and grass is greening up.🌿

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 63 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 25th. That’s Arbor Day, a good day to celebrate trees 🌲and all they provide society like wood to burn. Calm wind becoming north around 5 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had partly cloudy in the morning, which became mostly sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 91 was set in 2002. .3 inches of snow fell back in 1965.❄

The sun will set at 7:39 pm with dusk around 8:09 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 60 degrees. There will be a southeast breeze at 5 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 30 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

That Pine Bush dinner should be a good one. 🍛Tastey dinner and a great presentation. I was thinking tonight would be a good time for going down to the park until I realized it was Pine Bush night.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly after 4am. Increasing clouds 🌧, with a low of 43 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 1st. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of 21 occurred back in 1948.

It looks like after tonight through the day after Easter, 🐰 the day they celebrate in Western NY as Dingus Day, it’s going to be rather cloudy and wet. But depending on which forecast you look at the weather for the following weekend in the Adirondacks 🗻 looks pretty good. The snow is rapidly melting in the North Country for sure. It looks like a big warm up is ahead for the end of the month. With the rain we will be getting in Albany over the next few days followed by the heat, things will really be out in bloom. I don’t expect though for things to be very green when I’m up north, but blue skies would certainly be nice for camping, even if not as nice for fishing.⛺

Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts 👂 about both self improvement and studying spreadsheets about compound interest, savings and retirement. I do think going car less for a few years is an option to explore further but not until 2021 — it could save a lot of money. In the meantime, I’m researching different insurers and what I really should have on my policy. Won’t save a lot of money, but a little bit. I also been pricing out hunting camps and other remote off-grid properties, to see what I really need for resources to buy land in 10 years. Obviously, that has to be tied to some kind income going forward,  and probably just as important, some kind of affordable health insurance. But it’s good to have a realistic picture of the numbers and challenges ahead.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until May 🕊 when the sun will be setting at 7:55 pm with dusk at 8:26 pm. On that day in 2018, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 74 and 43 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 65 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 2001.

Looking South West

March 29, 2019 Morning

Good morning! I hardly noticed it was a Friday, but eight weeks until the start of Memorial Day Weekend. Hello black flies! You remember me.🐜 Two weeks to Grilled Cheese Day 🧀. Despite being such a supporter of the dairy industry, it’s been a long time since I’ve had a good grilled cheese. Good meal for camping on a rainy day with some soup. I kind of don’t like soup cans because they can’t be burnt at camp but they certainly burnt clean, then can be taken to the transfer station and recycled ♻.

This morning it was raining but now it’s just cloudy and damp, around 46 degrees at the bus stop near Valero. ☔ I’m prepared, I brought my umbrella. There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 11 pm. ☃️

I was on the fence about taking the bus to work or driving 🚘 in. But I was afraid of getting caught in the rain walking from my truck parked by Downtown SUNY and the Smith Building. Maybe tonight will be a late night, but if I think we are likely to released between 11:30 and 6:30 AM, I’ll go home and get Big Red during some downtown in the evening. That way I’ll only have to park once. Another option is ride sharing, I guess that would be a heck of a lot safer than driving home sleep deprived. Or sleep under the desk until the 6:30 in the morning. 😴 I have options. Taking a 40 ft bus 🚍 to work today, no articulated bus today on the 18. A bit crowded but it is generally difficult to justify articulated buses on most of CDTA’s routes.

Today will have showers, mainly before 5pm. 🌦 High of 53 degrees at 4pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 3rd. Maximum dew point of 44 at 1pm. 🏖️ South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1946. 5.6 inches of snow fell back in 1984.❄

The sun will set at 7:18 pm with dusk around 7:46 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 36 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 53 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 8pm, then a chance of showers after 10pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 42 degrees at 3am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around April 28th. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had patches of fog in the evening, which became mostly sunny by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 37 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 1970.

Thursday I left work at five and caught the express bus 🚍 home. I was surprised, twice this week. I think I also left at five on Tuesday. I doubt I’ll get the express bus home tonight and for the Saturday night overnight at work I’ll drive in. Still one or two nights a year driving into work isn’t too bad. No fees to park on the street on the weekends either, so hard to complain. That said I’m kind of tired 😴 already in anticipation for how the weekend will be. Maybe a long day today, who knows? I’ll get Big Red later on if I think I’ll be leaving in the middle of the night although they do have buses come Saturday morning.

I went to the laundromat last night to make sure that I had enough clean dress clothes for the long weekend and into next week if necessary. 👚 I figured if I had the time I should do it tonight as who knows how late I’ll be at work tomorrow. That and I wanted to see if the stain would come out of my pair of pants. 👖 It did, I was happy 😊 about that. Plus parking 🅿 is always a challenge at laundromat on Fridays due to people parking illegally there while they are at the bar getting drunk. 🍻

I was went for my evening walk last night. 🚶 Not a bad evening for a walk, certainly nice and mild. 🌃 It was in the fifties so I could wear just a long sleeve shirt and my Carhartt vest that I so love. I really look forward to more mild nights even if it means that it will be a bit sticky out at times. Humidity can be addressed by cold drinks and swimming holes 🏊 the same can’t be said about freezing cold weather. Maybe when I have my own land and a woodstove eventually I’ll feel different.

Sat our back for a while with a cold glass 🍸 of water and a hint of apple cider vinegar last night. 🍏 Its gross but in moderation I think I like it better than beer or whiskey. Shit ton cheaper too and no hang over. Maybe I’m growing old. 👴 Not too cold either although there was a bit of a breeze. Clouds kind of blocked the stars. Not sure the next time I’ll get to sit out back, tonight will probably be kind of cold and damp with today’s rain showers. ☔

Tomorrow will have a chance of showers before 1pm, then a slight chance of showers after 5pm. Mostly cloudy 🌦, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around May 1st. Maximum dew point of 48 at 12pm. South wind 7 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light drizzle in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 50 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 1986. 4.0 inches of snow fell back in 1911.❄

I expect I will be in the office 🏢 tomorrow when I’m not sleeping. 😴 But I’m fine with that. Making money 💵 is important, especially with $1,100 going out the door today between car insurance 🚙 for Big Red and rent. Just a lot of things hit at once. Next month mid-April, after a paycheck or maybe two I have to pay my state taxes and credit card 💳 bill. But I think I will survive, things aren’t as bleak as a month ago. Still following my savings plan and I think I’ll keep my fund balance relatively close to where it should be.

Looking ahead to Sunday, showers, mainly before 2pm. High near 47. Northwest wind 9 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 51 degrees.

I’m thinking about washing the remaining salt off my truck on Sunday. 🚿 I think we are done with road salt for the year. Monday is going to be cold but I doubt the sanders will be out. I will however have to turn the heat 🔥 back on for at least one more day. I shouldn’t need a lot of groceries, although dish soap is on the top of the list.

I am hoping to visit Mom and Dad’s for Sunday dinner 🍜but I’m not sure what Sunday evening will be like for me. I’m taking it one day at time. But soon it will be less busy for me, and I go out and do some fishing. 🎣 Today I’ll have to renew my fishing license, so I have it ready for when the current one expires in two weeks.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Grilled Cheese Day 🧀 when the sun will be setting at 7:34 pm with dusk at 8:03 pm. I usually have cheese at home but I should get some bread 🍞 for that very special occasion. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 54 and 29 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 57 degrees. We hit a record high of 84 back in 1977.

In four weeks on April 26 the sun will be setting at 7:50 pm,🌄 which is 31 minutes and 53 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had partly cloudy and temperatures between 56 and 39 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 63 and 41 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 1990.

So they’re banning shopping bags at the state level. 👜Hardly a secret I’m not a fan of it on the local level but I have no opinion on a state level. Not my place to pass judgment. I guess it’s kind of good from a statewide perspective, it will reduce waste at least in theory. I kind of liked the free shopping bags certainly while camping, they were perfect for storing the day’s burnable trash while camping 🔥 , as trash liners in the bathroom 🚮 and of course for wrapping lunch in to prevent leaks. 🍝

I always brought back the bags I didn’t chuck in the fire to the store 🏬. But so be it, I guess many citidiots aren’t that responsible. I’ll just have to go back to using reusable bags – I used to use them a lot but they got dirty and worn out and I liked having the plastic ones for camp which is more than 3/4th the year for me.⛺ I’m sure when I move to another state to buy land for my off grid house, they’ll have the traditional bags and the few that I don’t reuse for various purposes will burn down to nothing quickly in the burn barrel out back. 🛢️

Lastly, I get kind of a laugh 😂 out of when reporters read my tweets and my blog to figure out what is happening in Albany. 📖 Like I know shit, they don’t tell me anything. But they must think I’m such a good ole boy. Something like Possum King Vlog 👑. Maybe I’ll be one some day when I live in a more free state out in the sticks. I’m actually pretty dull even though I have a big jacked up truck and I spend a lot of time in the wilderness. 🌲🌲🌲🌲And I have a thing for Pennsyltucky and fire. 🔥

Looking ahead, Grilled Cheese Day 🧀 is in 2 weeks, Pack Rat Day 🐀 is in 7 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕️ is in 8 weeks, Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 14 weeks and Labor Day Weekend Begins 👨‍🏭 is in 22 weeks.

Franklinton Vlaie

June 12, 2017 Night

Good evening! Partly clear and 79 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. The dew point is 62 degrees. Pretty warm evening after a hot day but it could be a lot worse. We only tied the record for today and the dew point was only in the muggy, not the oppressive range.

After getting back from my evening walk, I’m sitting out back in a lawn chair with the fan in my truck cap blowing air on me making it feel a little better cooler. With the breeze from the fan and the relatively low dew point its pretty reasonable but when I was in my apartment earlier getting changed, it’s still pretty oppressive. I’m quite impressed by this little oscillating fan. It pushes around a lot of air for being an inexpensive 12 volt fan. I have the truck cap lights doing the slow cycle through their colors.

Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low of 73 degrees at 4am. 16 degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 66 at 5am.  As the night progresses, it will get stickier. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming southwest after midnight. In 2016, it got down to 52 degrees with rain and mostly cloudy skies. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1974.

Waning Gibbous Moon tonight with 77% illuminated. The moon will rise around 9:58 pm. The Last Quarter Moon is on Saturday night with chance of t-storms expected. The Full “Buck” Moon is on Sunday, July 9th. The sun will rise at 5:16 am with the first light at 4:42 am, which is 4 seconds earlier than yesterday. Tonight will have 8 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 31 seconds over last night.

Nice summer evening, the air smells a little like fresh hay from the farm chopping it down the road. The stars are decent tonight, although it’s not totally dark yet. Some fire flies around, although I think I walked a bit too early to see the bat. I’m sure he’s around although I don’t think they are common as they once were. That’s kind of bad, because we need more bats after such a buggy spring. I heard more rain the second half of the week into the weekend.

Today was the work picnic at Martell’s at the Albany Golf Course. Wasn’t a half bad evening but it was hot. I made the mistake of walking back to my truck parked up by SUNY which made me into a sweaty pig. I didn’t mind abstaining from drinking because the one glass of Coors Light I had made the diet soda taste good in constrast. Food, while basic picnic food was pretty good and by evening it had cooled down a bit. Nice way to close out another session year. I think I had the biggest truck in the lot but then again they’re aren’t a lot of people in government who drive pickup trucks, at least to work.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high of 85 degrees at 2pm. Nine degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 69 at 11am. The mercury won’t be as high tomorrow as today but it will feel a lot more muggy. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Some relief expected Thursday when it becomes less humid. A year ago, we had rain, mostly cloudy skies and a high of 66 degrees. The record high of 94 was set in 1892.

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. Saturday, mostly cloudy, with a high near 78. Maximum dew point of 66 at 4pm. Sunday, a chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 83. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Maximum dew point of 71 at 4pm. That’s going to be pretty oppressive.  Typical average high for the weekend is 79 degrees. Summer like temperatures but not a lot of sun expected this weekend for sure.

In four weeks on July 10 the sun will be setting at 8:33 pm, which is 9 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2016 on that day, we had rain, drizzle, patches of fog, mist, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 79 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 82 and 61 degrees. The record high of 100 degrees was set back in 1936.

Finally got the photos and videos uploaded from the last weekend. It was a good weekend if it was fairly ordinary on Pisceo Powley Road. I keep playing with video. My only complaint is that I wish the weekend was a bit longer and the weather a bit sunnier and warmer on Saturday. It was almost perfect on Sunday though, until it was time to go home. Bugs were bad though.

Been having some problems with my dashboard camera locking in the mountains due to a GPS bug. I noticed that they have a firmware update that may address this issue. I like how the dash cam manufacturer keeps putting out meaningful upgrades and how all you have to do to upgrade is save the file on the root of the flash card then put it back in the dash cam and turn it on. Doesn’t require Windows or any specific PC program to update the firmware.

Next weekend I’m heading to the Gas Up. It looks like Saturday will have the best weather. I want to get the homemade ice cream there, made by the antique Blackstone engine or whatever that is called. I want to poke around the exhibits more and make some more videos. Probably no to camping this weekend but it depends on the weather.

Then the following weekend I might go swimming at Mine Kill State Park, camp at Burnt Rossman, fish the Schoharie Creek and maybe visit the farm markets in Fulton for fresh fruit. And maybe hike the Cliffs of Middleburg. So many fun things to do in Schoharie County. Probably just one night as I expect to be tired after a busy week at work.

Using the headphone speaker wire to tie my wallet to my belt seems to work fine, although I guess to the paranoid it looks like I’m wearing a wire for spying. But especially with the suit on it looks essentially invisible and if it does fall out of my pocket I’ll feel the wire tug on my belt. The insulated headphone wire is quite durable and because I break ear buds with some regularity, i should have plenty of wire to replace it when it wears out and breaks again.

Looking ahead, Mutts Day is in 7 weeks, Strugeon Moon is in 8 weeks, Last Sunset After 8 PM is in 2 months, Labor Day is in 12 weeks, September 11th is in 13 weeks, More Night Then Day in Albany is in 15 weeks, Columbus Day is in 17 weeks, Christmas is in 28 weeks, January 1, 2018 is in 29 weeks and 35th Birthday is in 33 weeks.

With that sun coming up so early and the mercury now dropping a bit, I probably should retire to bed.
