May 1, 2023 Morning

Happy May Day! ๐ŸŒท

I guess it’s May so they stopped the rain showers for like two minutes. It’s only a few minutes before they crank the outdoors thermostat to 95. My neighbor already has his air conditioner installed. Me, I’ll open my windows and get the fan out as needed and make plans to head to the Potholers.

Good morning! Clouds ๐ŸŒฅ the rain has pulled off and 48 degrees in Delmar for the morning walk. There is a west breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 22 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ

Kind of a chilly morning ๐Ÿƒ to start off the month with the breeze and dampness making it feel a bit cool. I’m out walking ๐Ÿšถ like usual, last months total worked out to be 320 miles walked. Probably that contributed to some of my weight loss plus my general reduction in calorie intake.

Today will have a chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 60 degrees at 2pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 17th. Southwest wind 11 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 69 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2001. There was a dusting of snow in 1978.โ„ It’s funny, I turned off the internal snow depth monitoring system on the blog on May 1st and there was that one year I awoke to a ton of snow at Moose River Plains. Okay maybe just a dusting but that’s a ton by May standards.

Last night got a good night’s sleep ๐Ÿ› by getting to bed by 8. If I’m going to get going early each morning I should at least plan to get to bed early. Rained and rained last night but it was good for my sleep. ๐Ÿ˜ด

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:53 pm with sun having an altitude of 62.4° from the due south horizon (-8.4° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:16 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (285°). ๐Ÿ“ธ

Need to get milk ๐Ÿฅ› this morning for the coffee โ˜• as over the weekend the milk in the fridge got kind of rancid. I might just get a half gallon of skim just because I’m not drinking as much milk these days. ๐Ÿฎ Mostly just for coffee. It will probably last longer than the gallons of milk I used to get and take less room in the cooler this weekend. Plus the paper carton is probably greener when it gets burnt and makes an excellent fire starter. ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Thought about pancakes ๐Ÿฅž or eggs ๐Ÿฅš this morning but decided for the lighter fare of oatmeal ๐Ÿฅฃ as last night at the folks house I had quiche. Mom insisted it was healthy, but I took a small slice of it which was good because the healthy portion with spinach was small the greasy sausage in it part was large. ๐Ÿฅง I’ve gotten so sensetive about unhealthy food after reading how much damage it does to your body. ๐Ÿคฎ Maybe tomorrow I’ll do “oatmeal – banana – egg” pancakes or cut my remaining unhealthy sqpancake mix with old fashioned whole oats and banana.

The sunset is in the west-northwest (292°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:55 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 7 seconds with dusk around 8:25 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon in the southeast (142°) at an altitude of 45° from the horizon, 247,882 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 9:04 pm.

I am not sure how late I’ll get home today ๐Ÿข, it could a late night or maybe not. I could use some comp time, especially as I don’t currently have much and I’d kind of like to use a get out of jail free card ๐ŸŽซ to leave early on Friday.

At sunset, look out for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and thunderstorms ๐ŸŒฉ and temperatures around 52 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 14 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 30 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have scattered showers and thunderstorms. โ›ˆ Mostly cloudy, with a low around 44. South wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Tomorrow we will have showers ๐ŸŒง๏ธ before 11am, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm between 11am and 5pm, then showers likely after 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 54. South wind 8 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Almost picture perfect spring weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Finally. I mean really the past two weeks have been real bummers. Things should be real green but the black flies ๐Ÿœ will be out in mass, at least up north. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 67. Maximum dew point of 44 at 8pm. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 72. Maximum dew point of 46 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 68 degrees.

I was thinking about either Old Route 8B or East Branch Sacandaga River for the weekend โ›บ but now I’m leaning towards Schoharie and maybe hiking from Grand Gorge to Stamford on Sunday. ๐Ÿšถ Might be a nice hike with everything greening up that way. Spring turkey ๐Ÿฆƒ starts today, well regular spring turkey, youth season started a few days ago so I will want to stay out of the woods before noon but I could fish or do road hikes on Saturday before then.

One month ๐Ÿ“… from now will be 9 PM Dusk ๐ŸŒ† when the sun will be setting at 8:27 pm with dusk at 9:00 pm. The average high temperature is 34 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895.

Clouds Over the Trees

March 11, 2023 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Snow and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒจ There is a north breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Out for the morning walk at 5:45 am today. ๐Ÿšถ Dark at the start of the walk especially with snow coming down but pretty. I wanted to get used to getting up early and maximize my weekend – plus avoid walking in the rain โ˜” should it warm up later in the day.

Today will rain showers and snow before 1pm, then a slight chance of rain showers between 1pm and 3pm. ๐ŸŒง High of 41 degrees at 2pm. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 8th. North wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 51 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1977. 4.1 inches of snow fell back in 1941.โ„

Not sure how nice a day it’s going to be today โ˜” so my plan is when I get home ๐Ÿก from the morning walk ๐Ÿšถ to explore some various things in code and maybe work on some blog content ๐Ÿ–ฅ and do some reading ๐Ÿ“–. I also want to go down to the library ๐Ÿ“š before five 5โƒฃ and then my evening walk.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:06 pm with sun having an altitude of 43.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-27.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 6.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 5:20 pm with the sun in the west (259ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (266ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:57 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 6:24 pm, which is one minute and 12 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 6:58 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 39 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 11 hours and 48 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 54 seconds over today.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. North wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became heavy snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -12 occurred back in 1948.

Today in 1993, Janet Reno is confirmed by the United States Senate and sworn in the next day, becoming the first female Attorney General of the United States. โš–๏ธ I’m not going to say anything more except to say history is her judge. I don’t have warm and fuzzy thoughts about the 1990s.

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until April Fools Day ๐Ÿคก when the sun will be setting at 7:22 pm with dusk at 7:49 pm (Daylight Savings Time). On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 53 and 36 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 52 degrees. State budget is due that day, I bet I will be as tired as shit that morning even if I can work from home. ๐ŸŽฃ Probably no hitting the trout hole that weekend. Maybe the following weekend. We hit a record high of 77 back in 1986.

Looking Down Towards Irish Hill

February 28, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Cloudy, damp and 33 degrees for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ. Calm wind. There are 7 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThe skies will clear around 10 pm.

The dire emergency snow storm ๐ŸŒจ they were talking about on the news ๐Ÿ“ฐ was whatever. I shoveled off my truck and brushed off the snow. The sidewalks were wet. I got my 10,000 or so steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ and that’s what’s important these days. I’m so close to winning ๐Ÿฅ‡ that badge for 50 days of consecutive 10,000 steps.

Tonight will have a slight chance of snow before 8pm. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒจ, with a low of 21 degrees at 4am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 27th. Light and variable wind becoming northwest 5 to 10 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2022, we had light rain in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 17 degrees. The record low of -9 occurred back in 1948.

Rice ๐Ÿš and broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ for dinner tonight. Simple quick to cook. And healthy though I added a bit of vegetable oil, salt and pepper. And saved the excess for a future meal ๐Ÿด. I figure it’s best to try new things that are inexpensive but healthy.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 66% illuminated. At 7 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (167ยฐ) at an altitude of 74ยฐ from the horizon, some 248,976 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by September 5th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Worm ๐Ÿ› Moon is on Tuesday, March 7. Getting bigger every night ๐ŸŒƒ.

The darkest hour is at 12:09 am, followed by dawn at 6:06 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:34 am in the east (100ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 57 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:12 am with sun in the east-southeast (107ยฐ). Tonight will have 12 hours and 44 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over last night.

Been continuing to read ๐Ÿ“– the book I’m reading on machine learning. I just need to find a killer project that I can use machine learning ๐Ÿค–

Good evening! Clear and 58 degrees for evening walk in Delmar, NY. ๐ŸŒƒ There is a south breeze at 11 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 41 degrees. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Friday around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Not a half bad evening for February. ๐ŸŒŸ The skies are full of stars and it’s quite mild. It was nice having the windows open today and enjoying some fresh air before it gets cold again after the rain tomorrow. โ˜” Then cold come Friday but bouncing back to normal by the weekend. After my walk I’ll sit out back until nine. ๐Ÿ› Going to close my windows then bed time.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 41 degrees at 6am. 23 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 25th. South wind 7 to 11 mph becoming northwest after midnight. Too good to be true, won’t last. In 2022, we had light snow in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1943.

Still enjoying the almost door to door service ๐Ÿšof the express Voorheesville bus. ๐Ÿš Great on session days but also like tomorrow evening when it rains. โ˜” That said, I do worry about not getting in as many steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ without walking to the Park and Ride but on nice days I still can. I was happy ๐Ÿ˜Š to see somebody on the bus today actually coming from Voorheesville as I know the bus I take isn’t as popular as earlier but I hope it doesn’t get canceled right away as long as there are other riders.

Tonight will have a Waining Crescent ๐ŸŒ˜ Moon with 22% illuminated. The Worm ๐Ÿ› Moon is on Friday, March 3. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:25 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:54 am in the east-southeast (107ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 1 seconds.

It was a quiet ๐Ÿคซ half of the day at work until a big project came in mid afternoon. Sometimes it’s so quiet and then so busy, ๐Ÿ–ฅ but when I have down time I try to use it well to analyze data, and learn new data science methods and sources of data. I’ve learned a lot of clever techniques to automate or at least speed up things at work. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš–๏ธ I might not be a PhD in data science but I’m learning some valuable techniques using R to mine a lot of value out of data.

Sunrise is one minute and 23 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:33 am with sun in the east-southeast (114ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 20 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 42 seconds over last night.

Today was such a nice day ๐Ÿข but I was stuck in my office all day except when I went to the farmers market to get mushrooms ๐Ÿ„ and did a short walk ๐Ÿšถ on the Plaza. Got home and spent more time reading ๐Ÿ“– up about machine learning. ๐Ÿค– Too bad the weekend isn’t as good looking.

Tomorrow will have showers likely, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒž ๐Ÿ‘‰ ๐ŸŒฅ , with a high of 55 degrees at 1pm. 19 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 6th. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became mist by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 2006. 17.3 inches of snow fell back in 1958.โ„

I decided that I can do my state taxes on paper ๐Ÿ“„ to avoid paying to file. There is a few different open source things to compute my federal taxes, and then once they are done the state is easy to do. I like paper in the sense it’s easier to carefully review. I feel like the online services you spit too much of your information into a black box ๐Ÿ—ƒ and it spits it back out and you don’t really know if it’s done right. I can compare to last year – forms are the same but the numbers ๐Ÿ”ข now are just slightly higher or maybe not if I reduced things down enough by retirement plan deductions.

In four weeks on March 15 the sun will be setting in the west (268ยฐ) at 7:02 pm (Daylight Savings Time),๐ŸŒ„ which is one hour, 34 minutes and 29 seconds later then tonight. February 7, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Rain showers and sleet and 35 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ with gusts up to 28 mph ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ๐Ÿ’จ. ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 7 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I wasn’t sure if I was going to go for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ but I wanted to get my steps in and keep up my record of doing 10,000 steps every day. There is some sleet and rain this evening and it’s cold but it’s kind of scattered. Not the nicest evening ever โ˜” but I’m getting my steps in ๐Ÿ‘ฃ.

Tonight will rain showers and sleet, mainly before 9pm. ๐ŸŒง Low of 34 degrees at 10pm. 17 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 5th. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 9 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1950.

It was a pretty ordinary Tuesday at work ๐Ÿข. I made it home by six 6โƒฃ. I’ve continued to further automate some of the boring ๐Ÿ’ค tasks I do at work with R and selenium. Code usually makes less mistakes than I do.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 95% illuminated. Not going to see it with the clouds. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:35 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:04 am in the east-southeast (110ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 5 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 11 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:45 am with sun in the east-southeast (117ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 32 seconds over last night.

Going to bed ๐Ÿ› shortly. I guess the State of the Union address is tonight but I haven’t listened to a political address in years and will listen ๐Ÿ‘‚ to the Lex Fridman podcast in bed. Most political speeches aren’t really worthwhile to listen to with all their partisan talking points ๐Ÿ“ƒ, you can catch the important points in the morning news ๐Ÿ“ฐ. I’ll listen to NPR as I make breakfast ๐Ÿฅฃ tomorrow to learn what was noteworthy in the address. Truth is that if it’s not reported, doesn’t really matter what the politician said at any rate.

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming sunny โ˜๐Ÿ‘‰ โ˜€ , with a high of 42 degrees at 2pm. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 6th. Northwest wind 11 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had light snow in the morning, which became light snow by afternoon. The high last year was 23 degrees. The record high of 52 was set in 1925. 14.0 inches of snow fell back in 1895.โ„

Been doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– and research on what it means to be your forties and peak ๐Ÿ—ป earnings years. ๐Ÿ’ต Whatever that means, it sure doesn’t feel like much money during such inflationary times with taxes so high. You can do all the right things but it feels like the deck is stacked against you. I know have made a lot of progress but I am growing impatient as things take longer to compound then I would hope and I want to own my own land ๐Ÿšœ. And I’m getting older ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป. But I’ll keep doing my best and those days will happen eventually.

In four weeks on March 7 the sun will be setting in the west (264ยฐ) at 5:53 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 35 minutes and 25 seconds later then tonight. Snowmobile Trail Climbs Henry Hill

February 1, 2023 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a west breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Cold evening for the walk ๐Ÿšถ but actually pretty normal for winter but after the January that was it feels even colder but truth is that I’m just not used to it. But by next week things will be pushing 50 again. ๐Ÿข Ever since I stepped out of the office this evening it was so cold out, even though I feel comfortable inside as I turned on the space heater then the electric blanket.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 17 degrees at 12am. Two degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 11th. Maximum wind chill around 15 at 8pm; West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming south after midnight. In 2022, we had snow in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 20 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1961.

I had a rough day ๐Ÿ˜• though I realize my problems are all inside my head. It’s a tough world out there, I have to do the best I can to navigate it and invest in my own future ๐Ÿ”ฎ and not take on other people’s problems. A lot of things are unfair and I often think I’m getting a raw deal ๐Ÿค but I have it a lot better off then many people.

I watched somebody run a stopped school ๐Ÿšธ bus this morning and then I found out that the state tightened who could free file this year, so I’m left studying my options for how to file my taxes. ๐Ÿ“‚ Maybe I’ll do paper ๐Ÿ“„. But it made me angry ๐Ÿ˜ก especially after hearing how state leaders want to expand benefits for migrants. I think our state should encourage immigration but people should be working and encouraged to open businesses. Taxed enough already, especially when I’ve worked so hard and the government is handing out freebies left and right.

I never understood the anger ๐Ÿ’ข of my dairy farming friend over government welfare benefits to the poor but when you work your ass off at 5 am, ๐Ÿฎ and pay a shit ton of taxes on your land, you can understand the anger. Farms pay remarkably high taxes in New York even after all the programs. I know the feeling.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 88% illuminated. At 7 PM, the moon was in the east-southeast (107°) at an altitude of 58° from the horizon, some 249,989 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 10th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ.

The Snow โ„ Moon is on Sunday, February 5. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:41 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:11 am in the east-southeast (113°) and last for 3 minutes and 9 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 2 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 7:52 am with sun in the east-southeast (120°). Tonight will have 13 hours and 56 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 22 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 4pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. South wind 6 to 11 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 27 degrees. The record high of 53 was set in 1981. 11.9 inches of snow fell back in 2015.โ„

The truth is I’m just bitter about the cold today. ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ The sun was nice but it was just such a nasty reminder about winter. I really want to get away from the long cold winters of New York but everything just takes so much longer financially and on my life then I would hope. I keep saving for a better tomorrow but I always feel like I’m treading on thin ice, if not falling through the ice gasping ๐Ÿ˜ฒ for air. Somehow at age 40 I thought I would be farther along in life, be more financially secure and have my own land ๐Ÿšœ. I just work so hard, and it’s such a slap in the face. But I’ll keep pushing, as I understand the power of compounding.

In four weeks on March 1 the sun will be setting in the west (261°) at 5:45 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 36 minutes later then tonight.
