December 10, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ! Two weeks to Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ…. Mostly cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a inch of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at around 8 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Didn’t sleep very well last night ๐ŸŒƒ, but breakfast and coffee is cooking now. ๐Ÿฅž Pancakes as usual. ๐Ÿฎ Ran out of milk, I was going to get it after my evening walk but I didn’t. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป I wasn’t sure I wouldn’t be able to make my morning walk as I didn’t get a real early start but I’m walking. My headphones ๐ŸŽง aren’t working real well but so be it. Mild morning so I’m just wearing the vest. Feels more like early April than December.

Today will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 43 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 28th. Northwest wind 10 to 16 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 52 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1966. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

I am working downtown today at least for a few hours ๐Ÿ’ผ, and I’m obviously not thrilled about riding the bus ๐Ÿš during a major uptick of pandemic, where they are reminding us to sign in and out for contact tracing purposes. ๐Ÿ‘พHI, we’re from the government and we want you to know we are putting under arrest as you might have a virus that you may die from. ๐Ÿ“ž That Missouri beef farmer I follow on YouTube had a good quarrentine from his deer ๐ŸฆŒ blind I heard. At one level I will be glad when the vaccine is widely available.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:49 am with sun having an altitude of 24.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.4ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.2 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 23 seconds with dusk around 4:53 pm, which is 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:30 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 48 seconds over yesterday.

This evening I am doing more of the interview with John Wolcott ๐Ÿ“žover a Zoom although I will just be doing the audio because I haven’t upgraded my phone yet for the extra data. Two weeks though. Lately though I’ve already started to burn through a lot of data on my phone ๐Ÿ“ฑ because it’s too cold to work from the library. I will definitely need the extra data come January when work is busier and it’s too cold to work down at the library parking lot.

Tonight will be partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 27 degrees at 2am. Four degrees above normal, whichn0 is similar to a typical night around December 2nd. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. In 2019, we had clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 26 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.

Today in 1978, Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin and President of Egypt Anwar Sadat are jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ๐Ÿ•Š for their work ending the Arab-Isreali conflict. Also, in 1817 Mississippi becomes the 20th U.S. state. ๐Ÿด๓ ต๓ ณ๓ ญ๓ ณ๓ ฟ

Showers this weekend. โ˜” Saturday, a slight chance of showers after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 45. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunday, a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 51. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Typical average high for the weekend is 37 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… when the sun will be setting at 4:26 pm with dusk at 4:58 pm. On that day in 2019, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 42 and 25 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 33 degrees. We hit a record high of 72 back in 2015.

November 26, 2020 Afternoon

Good afternoon! Happy Thanksgiving. ๐Ÿฆƒ Hopefully you’re not one sick ๐Ÿคฎ turkey with COVID-19 and are enjoying your day. Rain and 53 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a south breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 49 degrees. There are 9 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธTemperatures will drop below freezing at Sunday around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I am pretty good although I slept in ๐Ÿ˜ด because I woke early and ended up listening to the news before falling back asleep again. ๐Ÿ“ป Then I got working on a bunch of different projects on my computer. I am trying to stay off the internet – the amount of doom scrolling ๐Ÿ“œ one can do is a terrible waste of time.

Thanksgiving Day ๐Ÿฆƒ will have a chance of showers, mainly before 4pm. Cloudy ๐ŸŒฆ, with a high of 54 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 1st. Maximum dew point of 50 at 1pm. South wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning, which became light rain by afternoon. The high last year was 58 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1979. 9.6 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

As I noted yesterday heading out to the parents house for a socially distant Thanksgiving around tray tables. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ†”๏ธ๐Ÿง”๐Ÿป๐Ÿ—๐Ÿฝ๏ธ It will be fun to do before everything really shuts down as the pandemic really climbs the next few weeks. I’m already planning to work primarily from home this winter ๐Ÿก๐Ÿ’ป, having figured out how to do it with my phone as a hot spot.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž was at 11:44 am with sun having an altitude of 26.3ยฐ from the due south horizon (-44.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:42 pm with the sun in the southwest (234ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (242ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:26 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 18 seconds with dusk around 4:56 pm, which is 31 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ Moon in the east-southeast (103ยฐ) at an altitude of 23ยฐ from the horizon, 252,133 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:32 pm. At sunset, look for rain showers ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 54 degrees. The dew point will be 49 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 24 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 39 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy , with a low of 42 degrees at 6am. ๐ŸŒซ 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 9th. Calm wind. In 2019, we had light rain in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of 8 occurred back in 1957.

I have the groceries I need and will be heading up to the Adirondacks tomorrow for a few days. โ›บ I do think I want to stop for hot coca โ˜• on the way up there and maybe a few other supplies but I want to get up there pretty early as the sun sets early ๐ŸŒ‡ this time of year. Do some short hiking from camp, listen to a lot of podcasts and retire to bed ๐Ÿ› fairly early. I could hot tent but I don’t think it neccesary for this weekend.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, a slight chance of showers before 10am. Partly sunny, with a high near 47. West wind 5 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. Sunday, sunny, with a high near 48. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ when the sun will be setting at 4:22 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain showers, mostly cloudy, mild and temperatures between 52 and 35 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 64 back in 1966.

Ashokan Mountain

April 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tax Day ๐Ÿ’ฐ! Today the State of New York gets rich and I get poorer. Next Wednesday is Earth Day ๐ŸŒŽ. I’ll have to burn extra plastic this weekend and produce more black smoke to make up for it. Keeps it out of the landfill by recycling โ™ป the carbon dioxide. After all, if not for Mother Earth where on earth would I be able to sling mud ๐Ÿฝ in my big jacked up truck. Plus it grows the grass ๐ŸŒพ to feed the cows ๐Ÿฎwhich produce the best beverage ๐Ÿต on earth ๐ŸŒŽ. The God bless the grass and the earthy smell of spring ๐Ÿ’ฉ in farm country.

Cold and sunny this morning. Mostly sunny and 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜€ There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. I mean if it was February it would be a nice day but it’s chilly out with wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 2 am tonight. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I am hoping it warms up enough to work part of the day day outside ๐Ÿ’ป but only time will tell. I’m not convinced that it will be warm enough to work down by the river this afternoon and truth be told I think it’s going to cloud up later.

Today will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 49 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 27th. West wind 7 to 17 mph. That’s going to feel kind of cold. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2003. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

Today I really need to get to the store ๐Ÿฌ that is wearing the banada over my face and maybe the laundromat. ๐Ÿ‘–I should also gas up for the weekend. โ›ฝ Going to be a pretty decent weekend even if a bit cold so I should plan some time social isolating in the wilderness. ๐ŸŒฒ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.4ยฐ from the due south horizon (-13.5ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 7:00 pm with the sun in the west (278ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-northwest (285ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:38 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:07 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:43 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies ๐ŸŒ„ and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between 11pm and midnight, then scattered snow showers after midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 29 degrees at 3am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 26th. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 37 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1981.

Cool but fairly sunny this weekend. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 53. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 60 degrees.

All things considered that isn’t too bad for the weekend. โ˜€ I enjoy lots of sun although I don’t think it will be warm enough to spend much time in the hammock but I can certainly go hiking and get some fresh air. ๐Ÿšถ

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Earth Day ๐ŸŒŽ when the sun will be setting at 7:45 pm with dusk at 8:15 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, warm weather and temperatures between 74 and 51 degrees. I’ll take an Earth Day like that but I think that unlikely. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1985.

February 4, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 37 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Temperatures will drop below freezing around 3 am. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

I went over to John Wolcott house for a few hours after work 🔎and continued working on his files. 📂 It’s been well over a year, one night most weeks. Learned a lot. I’ve started to tape record the audio 🔉 to capture some of our conversations. Now to just finish up the labels 🔖.

That bus really was smoking 💨 bad this evening. 🚍 I wonder if it’s an issue with the particle trap, I didn’t see it smoking downtown when I got one but I swear I’ve seen that bus smoking before but not all of the time. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of it at the end of my walk but no such luck.

Mild evening, I went for my evening walk 🚶. Not too cold out which is nice. I listened to a bit of President’s State of the Union address before turning it off. Honestly I’m hoping it’s Trump’s final state of the union and we will have a new president giving an inauguration address next year. 📝 I think the delayed results of the democratic caucus in Iowa kind of took all of the air out of the news cycle for the president. I’m sure he will be acquitted of the removal process later this week and hopefully we’ll have a new president soon.

Tonight will be cloudy โ˜, with a low of 29 degrees at 6am. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 24th. Northwest wind around 10 mph. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -15 occurred back in 1918.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon with 79% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the south-southwest (205ยฐ) at an altitude of 68ยฐ from the horizon, some 240,057 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. 🚀 At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by August 4th. Buckle up for safety! 💺 The Snow โ„ Moon is on Sunday, February 9. The darkest hour is at 12:10 am, followed by dawn at 6:38 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:08 am in the east-southeast (112ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 8 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 7 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌄 The golden hour ends at 7:49 am with sun in the east-southeast (119ยฐ). Tonight will have 13 hours and 53 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 2 minutes and 27 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 33 degrees at 2pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 6th. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 57 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1890. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 2014.โ„

In four weeks on March 3 the sun will be setting in the west (262ยฐ) at 5:47 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 50 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 39 and 29 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 39 and 21 degrees. The record high of 64 degrees was set back in 2002.

Looking ahead, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 is in 1 week, National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 2 weeks, Average High is 40 โ˜€๏ธ is a month away, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 6 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 9 weeks, 8 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 3 months, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 13 weeks, Primary Day 🗳๏ธ is in 20 weeks, Election Day 2020 🗳๏ธ is in 39 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳๏ธ is in 39 weeks.

White Tail Walking Away

December 14, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Next Saturday is First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ. Pine Bush Hike next too, supposed to be a ski trip from Madison Avenue Extension 🎿but I got my doubts that we will have much snow left by then. Rain, drizzle and fog 🌁 and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Not a real nice morning, it’s not only foggy outside but also in my head. 🌁 I woke up early again this morning and had trouble getting back to sleep until I wandered downstairs and took a pee. 🚽 Little achy in my knees too but maybe that because I’ve been spending do much time on the exercise bike. 🚲 Then I got looking at some numbers and stats in Excel and the DEC data. I do have some new data with the DEC latest dump to update a few maps but honestly my map collection 🗾is pretty complete on the blog.

Today will rain likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 21st. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Going to be a real dreary day but hopefully that will eat away at the snow. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1901. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Today I am going to my parents house for their Christmas decorating party 🎄. Not going out tomorrow as I have the Save the Pine Bush benefit to go to tomorrow night. It’s kind of in the middle of the city which is annoying because there isn’t much bus service on Sunday night to take me there, so I’m going to have to drive there avoiding the red light camera intersections somehow. 🚦 I really hate driving in the city, my truck gets awful gas mileage on city streets and I might have to fuel โ›ฝ up tomorrow as I haven’t bought gas since the last time I was camping the week before Thanksgiving.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 12 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 36 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1874.

Probably won’t be walking tonight 🚶
but instead riding the exercise bike 🚲 and watching some YouTube videos. At least I won’t have to worry about slipping and falling on the bike compared to walking on icy sidewalks. Two nights ago there was a fair amount of black ice in parts.

Today in 1994, started construction begins on the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river. โ›ฒ The Three Gorges Dam has been the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW) since 2012. In 2014, the dam generated 98.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) and had the world record, but was surpassed by the Itaipรบ Dam, which set the new world record in 2016, producing 103.1 TWh.

Also, today was a notable date in civil rights history, with the release of the Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, 379 U.S. 241 (1964), 💖a landmark United States Supreme Court case holding that the Commerce Clause gave the U.S. Congress power to force private businesses to abide by Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations.🏰

One month 📅 from now will be Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:16 pm. The average high temperature is 30 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. It’s already pretty cold โ„ in my book 📙 but it could be colder and will get colder. And I’m half seriously thinking about eventually living off-grid in the much colder Wisconsin, a bit in a world where the climate has warmed a fair amount more over the next ten to 15 years.
