April 15, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tax Day 💰! Today the State of New York gets rich and I get poorer. Next Wednesday is Earth Day 🌎. I’ll have to burn extra plastic this weekend and produce more black smoke to make up for it. Keeps it out of the landfill by recycling ♻ the carbon dioxide. After all, if not for Mother Earth where on earth would I be able to sling mud 🐽 in my big jacked up truck. Plus it grows the grass 🌾 to feed the cows 🐮which produce the best beverage 🍵 on earth 🌎. The God bless the grass and the earthy smell of spring 💩 in farm country.

Cold and sunny this morning. Mostly sunny and 40 degrees in Delmar, NY. ☀ There is a northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. I mean if it was February it would be a nice day but it’s chilly out with wind. Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 2 am tonight. ☃️

I am hoping it warms up enough to work part of the day day outside 💻 but only time will tell. I’m not convinced that it will be warm enough to work down by the river this afternoon and truth be told I think it’s going to cloud up later.

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 49 degrees at 3pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 27th. West wind 7 to 17 mph. That’s going to feel kind of cold. A year ago, we had light rain in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 63 degrees. The record high of 86 was set in 2003. 2.4 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

Today I really need to get to the store 🏬 that is wearing the banada over my face and maybe the laundromat. 👖I should also gas up for the weekend. ⛽ Going to be a pretty decent weekend even if a bit cold so I should plan some time social isolating in the wilderness. 🌲

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:56 pm with sun having an altitude of 57.4° from the due south horizon (-13.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 3.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:00 pm with the sun in the west (278°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (285°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:38 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 59 seconds with dusk around 8:07 pm, which is one minute and 9 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:43 pm. At sunset, look for partly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 13 hours and 25 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 46 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have a slight chance of rain showers before 11pm, then a slight chance of rain and snow showers between 11pm and midnight, then scattered snow showers after midnight. Mostly cloudy 🌧, with a low of 29 degrees at 3am. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 26th. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 37 degrees. The record low of 22 occurred back in 1981.

Cool but fairly sunny this weekend. Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 53. 😎 Sunday, a chance of showers after 2pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 58. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 60 degrees.

All things considered that isn’t too bad for the weekend. ☀ I enjoy lots of sun although I don’t think it will be warm enough to spend much time in the hammock but I can certainly go hiking and get some fresh air. 🚶

As previously noted, next Wednesday is Earth Day 🌎 when the sun will be setting at 7:45 pm with dusk at 8:15 pm. On that day in 2019, we had partly sunny, warm weather and temperatures between 74 and 51 degrees. I’ll take an Earth Day like that but I think that unlikely. Typically, the high temperature is 61 degrees. We hit a record high of 86 back in 1985.

Above the Ravine

January 2, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Thursday. Back to work today after my five days away from work and some nice camping too. ⛺ It’s the New Year, full of hope and working for a better tomorrow. 🎇 Next Thursday is Static Electric Shock Day 🧼. How shocking. Never have much problem with static in my apartment as the air is never real dry. Partly cloudy and 30 degrees at the Elm Ave Park & Ride – CDTA. ⛅ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 9 am. 🌡️

Today will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. 14 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around March 17th. It will feel almost like a spring day in January. 🌸 No flowers yet but we can look forward to nicer days in about three months. Not seeing much cold in the forecast in the near future. South wind 8 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1890. 7.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:00 pm with sun having an altitude of 24.4° from the due south horizon (-46.4° vs. 6/21). It’s starting to climb a bit more as summer approaches. Not 70.8 yet! The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:48 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) starting at 4:30 pm and lasts for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 52 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:41 pm. At sunset, look for partly sunny skies 🌃 and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, an increase of 48 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 34 degrees at 1am. 18 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 6th. South wind 7 to 9 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -14 occurred back in 1970.

I saw one of the CDTA all electric battery 🔋 buses 🚍 running the 233 Schodack Run today. I’m glad, electric buses are the future. They bought the buses last summer but now they are live. I am hopeful the technology works out well, as it could have a lot of emissions reductions. A lot of public transit authorities are adopting electric buses, and it could have a significant impact on local air quality — and possibly noise reduction too. Morever, the all electric buses will be cleaner and nicer neighbors — the low sulfur diesel fuel and pollution traps help a lot — but emissions controls aren’t always perfect. Also, the ANSWERS smoke stack is totally gone now — they finished tearing it down last week. It’s a commitment towards a cleaner air quality for all.🏭

Not a particularly nice weekend on tap. 🙁 Saturday, rain, possibly mixed with snow, becoming all rain after 7am. High near 40. Calm wind becoming northeast around 6 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Sunday, a chance of snow before 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Typical average high for the weekend is 31 degrees.

Staying in town this weekend. 🏡 I heard Saturday may be very wet. Maybe that’s when I’ll wash my truck. 🚙 I can probably come up with enough groceries around town in the mean time. 🍴 It’s good to use up the food 🍲 I have at home. Not sure if I will do it this weekend but I want to go over to John Wolcott house and work on scanning in the index 📇 for his files 📂 and use it to make labels and a type set index to keep them better organized. It will have to be a Saturday so I can drive into the city with the big heavy Save the Pine Bush scanner.

I am continuing to research mental health services with my insurance provider and start to call around. 📞 I am thinking a little bit of counseling and self reflection with a neutral party could really boost my productivity at work 💼 and open up new career opportunities. Maybe I’ll have more courage and confidence to do more job interviews or see a promotion and make more money 💵 after some counseling. If I could turn 8 counseling sessions at $25 co-pay a piece over four months into a future $10,000 raise over a decade of investing that could be well over $100k and plug that gap in my future plans for the off-grid property out west. I have a lot of important decisions to make, especially as 2021 gets underway, and I want to make them as well as possible.

🌹🌻🌼Only 77 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!🌹🌻🌼

As previously noted, next Thursday is Static Electric Shock Day 🧼 when the sun will be setting at 4:40 pm with dusk at 5:11 pm. On that day in 2019, we had rain and temperatures between 40 and 32 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 30 degrees. We hit a record high of 62 back in 2008.

White Rocks Overlook

February 5, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Two weeks to 5:30 PM Sunset 🌆. Cloudy, damp, muddy and 46 degrees in Delmar. ☔ There is a south breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. There are 1.25 inches of snow on the ground. ☃ Temperatures will drop below freezing at around 10 pm. ☃️

One more mild day today. Then February weather returns for the second half of the week, although honestly a bit above average until the weekend when it will be closer to average. 🌞Today will again be relatively busy but still not too insane or so I hope. 💼But maybe I’ll be able to catch the five o’clock home.🚌

I was running late again but fortunately so was the bus ⌚ so I made it with time to spare to the bus stop. 🚏I’ve been trying to get to bed earlier but I’ve been bad at that. I wake up at the normal time but then delay getting out of bed. That and I was planning on wearing the same pants as yesterday but I stopped when I discovered that there was mud on them from just walking around the city streets, kicking it up. I don’t care about mud that much, but I’m supposed to look nice for work. 👔It pays the bills and let’s me save for a better tomorrow, owning my own land in the wilderness. 🗻

Today will have isolated showers before 11am. Mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 53 degrees at 12pm. 21 degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around April 3rd. I’ll take April weather in early February. Not all warm days are a result of climate change I tell myself. South wind 7 to 15 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had cloudy in the morning, which became sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 34 degrees. The record high of 59 was set in 1890. 10.4 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

Snow has been doing a lot of melting yesterday, it was quite damp but mild. 💧I’m glad it’s been warm enough to give the heat a break – I’ve left the thermostat at fifty since yesterday and with the solar radiation hitting the building yesterday it was 63 degrees inside by the time I got home.🔥 I’m not going to pay to keep the heat warm when it’s above freezing, I’d much prefer to keep it colder. Money is always tight, my heating bills this year seem a lot steeper than years past. But then again, I don’t hesitate to turn up the heat like I did years ago when I was younger. 💸

The sun will set at 5:14 pm with dusk around 5:44 pm, which is one minute and 19 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for mostly clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 15 mph with gusts up to 26mph. Today will have 10 hours and 10 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 29 seconds over yesterday. Even longer, getting closer to twelve hours of daylight in a month.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 22 degrees at 6am. Six degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical night around March 4th. Northwest wind 6 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. In 2018, we had clear in the evening, which became light snow by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 15 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1948.

Tomorrow will have a slight chance of rain and sleet between 3pm and 4pm, then a chance of rain. Increasing clouds 🌞, with a high of 35 degrees at 1pm. Two degrees above normal, which is similiar to a typical day around February 15th. Light and variable wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. Little or no sleet accumulation expected. A year ago, we had cloudy in the morning, which became sunny by afternoon. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 55 was set in 1991. 10.8 inches of snow fell back in 1978.❄

Monday wasn’t too bad of a day, work got out around 7:40, I ended up taking the 8:15 bus 🚌 home and having a quick bite to eat before going on my evening walk around the block.🌯 A nice starry night, warm enough that I could walk with just a t-shirt and my vest.👕

I ordered some micro USB cables from AliExpress. I ordered the UGreen brand which if they are anything like the latest ones I ordered are built to be very high quality, durable, heavy while in minimal but professional looking plastic envelopes. 🔌Not a lot of waste.♻ I ordered a 3 meter and two 1.5 meter cables for $10, which if they are like the last two I ordered from them are a very good deal. I know that you can get cheap USB cables from Amazon but they aren’t as nice as the UGreen cables. The 3 meter cable is nine feet long which means that I can reach either microcontroller mounted on the wall from my laptop without moving it from where it sits by my desk.

For simple components, I swear by most of the things I have gotten from AliExpress. Only one or two things have either gotten lost in the mail✉ or been below expectations but most components arrive within two weeks and are all within specs, same quality as if you ordered from a United States retailer.📦

While I was on AliExpress I also bought some 5 volt linear regulators. I am thinking about building a smart switch for the solar panel and the dual batteries so that when I have a lot of sun I can not only top off the accessory battery 🔋but also the starting battery while automatically disconnecting them when there is little sun to avoid the batteries fighting or over discharging. I could use the built-in linear regulator of the Arduino Nano but I fried one last year with the 15.4 volts of the alternator output at times and the summer heat. I’ve 3.3 volt regulators in my toolbox but no 5 volt ones.

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until 5:30 PM Sunset 🌆 when the sun will be setting at 5:32 pm with dusk at 6:01 pm. On that day in 2018, we had rain showers, partly cloudy and temperatures between 44 and 23 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 36 degrees. We hit a record high of 66 back in 1981.

A bit cool but sunny this time weekend. 😎 Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 31. Typical average high for the weekend is 33 degrees. Should be nice, certainly not frigid. I’ll take it.

I am still chewing over my weekend plans. Maybe I’ll go up to Johnstown or maybe not. It’s still quite a bit of a drive for a relatively small outdoors show and I’m still thinking about heading out of town for Presidents Day Weekend.⛺ Weather depending of course. This weekend doesn’t look that bad but kind of chilly but that’s expected for February. I should see when the Adirondack Ice Races on Lake Algonquin are – if they were this weekend – that would increase my incentive for going north. Of course the other problem is finding a pull off where I can park and hike back to a campsite along route 8 this time of year. Maybe I should just wait and save my mileage and gas expenses until it gets warmer.⛽ Two months from now will be early April after all. But in the mean time, the only weather is expected to moderate a bit…

In four weeks on March 5 the sun will be setting at 5:50 pm,🌄 which is 35 minutes and 39 seconds later then today. In 2018 on that day, we had cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 31 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 40 and 22 degrees. The record high of 71 degrees was set back in 1964.

The ants seem to have disappeared from the counter. I’m glad about that. I don’t know if it took a while for the ant bait to work or just spraying the area where they were coming from was enough. It’s been over 24 hours since I saw the last ant so I’m hopeful.🐜 I have this big bottle of spray now so I may use it when and if I see them again. Much like mice and other pests,🐭 they tend to come and go in cycles – you have mice until you catch them all and then they are gone for months if not years.

Looking ahead, 5:30 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 2 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 3 months, 8:30 PM Sunset ️⛱️ is in 4 months, Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 5 months, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM 🌆 is in 23 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳️ is in 91 weeks.

91 weeks until presidential Election Day! Now you know. I’ll already be thinking my post election November road trip at that point. The bus is almost downtown, it’s off to work. Have a great day for sure on this Tuesday!

 Lincoln Park

December 10, 2018 Morning

Good morning! Happy 7:15 AM Sunrise ⌛️! Lol, maybe back in Albany. On a cloudy day like today it was pretty dark until 7:45. Three weeks to New Years Eve 🎆. Cloudy and 24 degrees in Hector. ☁ There is a northwest breeze at 9 mph. 🍃. Definitely a winter day, not good for sitting around. Things will start to thaw out at Friday around 10 am. 🌡️

Today will be cloudy ☁, with a high of 27 degrees at 1pm. 11 degrees below normal. North wind 7 to 9 mph. Kind of a cold winter day although when you’re gathering firewood doesn’t seem so cold. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies with more clouds in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 64 was set in 1966. A few decades ago I might say. 6.1 inches of snow fell back in 2014.❄

The sun will set at 4:34 pm with dusk around 5:05 pm, which is 4 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for cloudy skies ☁ and temperatures around 26 degrees. There will be a north breeze at 7 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 7 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 47 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a low of 20 degrees at 5am. Three degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 18th. Maximum wind chill around 11 at 3am; Calm wind becoming southwest 5 to 9 mph after midnight. In 2017, we had cloudy skies. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1988.

Bisquick biscuits for breakfast with cheese. A big pot of coffee. While it’s cloudy and occasional snow flurries I don’t think it’s that cold out compared to yesterday but maybe I’m just moving more. The best way to get warm is head out in the woods and chop wood. Much more fun than being home. 😎 Looking forward to seeing more sun though tomorrow. If it’s nice I might go up to Montezuma and Seneca Falls, that’s to be decided. It’s a bit of a drive and I’m not sure I want to drive after dark.

Yesterday I made stew for lunch and dinner and fixed up campsite a bit more. Had a good supply of wood, so I had a nice fire. 🔥 Stew was okay but I think I’d want to use other spices and maybe flour rather than Bisquick next time. Beef stewed up nicely although the pot was black from the stove operating at low with the stoichiometric ratio off causing a lot of soot. Usually propane is a very clean fuel but it can burn dirty if things are not working properly.

A lot of people were out hoping for a good final day of regular deer season 🔫 but I saw nobody dragging a deer out of the woods. Noisy though as people headed out loading shotgun shells in their guns, clinking the action especially when the one big group went out yesterday. Saw one black powder guy today but he was comparatively much quieter.

Thinking about going down to Trumansburg today just because it’s relatively close and I want to charge up the batteries and drive the truck at highway speed to make sure things are better lubricated and charged compared to idling. I probably top off the gas and also go for a walk at Taughannock Falls as I’m curious what it looks like in the winter. 🗻

It’s been a good trip so far. Cold and dark yes, but it’s December and that’s to be expected. But I have lights and heat and the long nights have improved my sleep, as I climb under the covers after shutting off the heat in my toasty warm tent. ⛺ I often have trouble sleeping in the late autumn, although the red lights in my room have improved that but I still wake up a lot at home st night. But at camp I seem to sleep much better. 💤

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until New Years Eve 🎆 when the sun will be setting at 4:44 pm with dusk at 5:16 pm. On that day in 2017, we had snow, mostly cloudy skies and temperatures between 8 and -2 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 1895.

Sun Through the Trees

November 23, 2018 Evening

Good evening! I hope you had a good Buy Nothing Day. I enjoyed my 10 plus mile walk around town, didn’t drive anywhere.🏃 Mostly clear and 25 degrees in Delmar. There is a south breeze at 7 mph. 🍃. There is about an inch of of snow on the ground. ☃ ️Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. 🌡️

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 19 degrees at 9pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical night around December 21st. Maximum wind chill around 13 at 6pm; South wind 3 to 8 mph. In 2017, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the early hours of the next day. It got down to 29 degrees. The record low of 7 occurred back in 2000.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon 🌖 with 99% illuminated with the moon rising at 5:12 pm. The moon will set at 8:14 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Wednesday night with mostly cloudy skies. The Cold Moon 🌝 is in 4 weeks. The sun will rise at 6:57 am with the first light at 6:26 am, which is one minute and 11 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 32 minutes of darkness, an increase of one minute and 47 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have a chance of rain, mainly after 4pm. Increasing clouds ⛅, with a high of 39 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similiar to a typical day around December 6th. South wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had mostly cloudy skies with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 48 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 2014. 8.8 inches of snow fell back in 1898.❄

Looking ahead to Sunday, a chance of rain, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 45.☁ West wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 44 degrees.

I had a nice Thanksgiving Dinner last night. My parents cooked it up nicely like they do every year.🍗 Turkey and all the fixings. Then they had apple pie. Nice evening but I kept feeling cool. I don’t know if I got chilled through while I was walking at Five Rivers earlier in the day. I spent 45 minutes hiking, nearly alone at Five Rivers on Thanksgiving, 🏃it was clear that not many people were willing to brave the sub-zero windchills on Thanksgiving despite people’s desire for a pre-turkey trot. While I was at my parents house, I was able to plug my laptop directly into their router, which helped me update the kernel on the laptop so it’s back online.📡

Even had a glass of wine with dinner, which it’s the first in the long time since I stopped drinking alcohol a while back.🍷 Maybe come camping season again I’ll have a beer or two in the wilderness but alcohol is so expensive these days, and my budget. 🍺Plus I am increasingly concerned about the health risks with drinking alcohol, such as cancer but also including addiction and injury from intoxication. I can go to bar after work and take public transit home, but I still I don’t like drinking with all the risks and costs.

Last night was a nice drive home. Lots of moonlight with the full moon, salt on the roads, and white snow made the landscape very bright for driving, making the headlights of oncoming cars not so bright or obnoxious. 🌝Plus ever since adjusting my headlights so they point at the road, I find that I am not looking as much at the headlights of oncoming cars, as my lane is plenty bright with the lows pointed where they can be useful. I wouldn’t mind driving on rural roads nearly as much if all evenings where like last night. Urban roads don’t bother me much but rural driving at night is hard.

The upstairs baseboard electric heat remains turned off because last night checking it for hazards out I noticed a paper wasps nest in it. 🐝 When I got back from North Syracuse, I noticed a bunch of dead wasps around and a handful of live ones. Nothing the vacuum couldn’t fix. But I have to move my dresser tomorrow and get in there with a vacuum. Without the bedroom electric heat boosting the gas heat downstairs, my bedroom drops to the low fifties at night. That’s fine for sleeping but I like how fast the electric can make my bedroom warm when waking up or getting home on a cold night. I try to bundle up and conserve heat but sometimes it’s nice to not be cold all of the time.

I went for a nice walk of over 10 miles around town today. I started out walking from my place near the Bethlehem High School down to the Port of Albany, via Delaware Avenue then the Albany County Rail Trail. 🏃This time I walked all the way down through the gorge to the parking lot next to the Center for Disabilities Services. From there, I hiked 5 ½ miles west to the Slingerlands Railroad bridge over New Scotland Avenue then back home via Cherry and Elm. Nice walk. Didn’t have to burn a drop of gasoline either,⛽ just some shoe leather going for the walk. Helped burn off some calories from turkey day, and is helping to build up more muscle and energy after those long weeks in North Syracuse. A little bit stiff and sore now. 💪When I’m back to work downtown, I am going to make it a priority, at least on non-session days, to do laps in the concourse and state museum to burn calories and increase strength.

I thought about heading out of town, but I never really made a decision last night/yesterday about heading out of town. ⛺ I really didn’t feel like driving anywhere if I wasn’t going to spend the night up in the wilderness. Kind of cool day for camping, but I’ve certainly done it on colder nights. I thought about it but locally it’s Big Game Season and I didn’t want to interrupt hunters dragging gear back, and up north there is still a lot of snow. ❄Plus, I’m trying to save money, as I still am thinking of buying the SSD drive, and that’s going to be a $150 when figure in tax and shipping – maybe a little less with holiday sales but I am not hopeful. Money is tight, and staying home saves money and miles on the truck.

I don’t plan to drive more then about 1,000 miles over the next four months. I did less then 1,000 miles last winter. 🚘 I am quite happy walking around the neighborhood and taking public transit to my destination. Most of the winter I expect to do no more most weeks then a Sunday trip to the grocery store, and then out to my parents house, maybe stopping along the way for a brief hiking or ski.🏂 Once or twice hot tent in the wilderness. Or truck cap camp if we have some snow free days. 🌇 My truck is going on 80,000 miles at this point, and I really want to try get at least three more years out of it – through 2022 – so I am trying to save miles on it whenever possible. Plus I am sure things will need expensive repairs in the coming years, especially once my truck crosses the 100,000 mile mark. I think rust and suspension wear with the big tires will wear things out before the miles.

I ordered a 12 VDC 5 amp power supply for the warm white LED strip I am going to mount over my bed. I went for a more expensive, UL laboratory certified, quality power supply🔌 as I didn’t want something that would pose a fire risk, especially so close to my bed. The difference between a cheap 5 amp supply and a quality one was like $5, and the more expensive one is certified to be more energy efficient.

Once I get the power adapter, I will put together an Arduino Nano board with Bluetooth board and a transistor to drive the warm white LED strip over my bed. :idea:For now I will control it with my phone📱 but the plan is eventually to have it talking to the colored LEDs on the other side of the room, which will be eventually upgraded and controlled by a ESP32 board which will have better PWM for mixing light and the Bluetooth to talk across the room with. It’s a good winter project.

In four weeks on December 21 the sun will be setting at 4:25 pm,🌄 which is one minute and 6 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2017 on that day, we had snow, mostly sunny skies and temperatures between 32 and 21 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 19 degrees. The record high of 59 degrees was set back in 1957.

Looking ahead, First Day of Winter ☃️ is in 4 weeks, Festivus 🍖 is a month away, 4:30 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 5 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day 🍯 is in 8 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day 🧀 is in 2 months, National Pie Day 🍰 is in 2 months, 5 PM Sunset 🌆 is in 9 weeks, March 🌨 is in 14 weeks, Ides of March ✝ is in 16 weeks, Memorial Day Weekend Starts 🏕️ is in 26 weeks and Dog Days of Summer 🌻 is in 32 weeks.

 Heading Into the Gorge

August 25, 2017 – Next Sixteen Weeks

As autumn approaches, we are seeing the days get shorter and the temperature starting to drop. This only accelerates as the first day of autumn grows nearer, as September rolls around next Friday and Labor Day is nye. But I like autumn with all the colors and change. Summer can’t last forever!
