What a week it’s been … ๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ“œ ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš’

Over the past week I’ve literally spent 17 plus hours sorting through wet, smokey and increasingly moldy papers trying to save whatever Albany history I can before it’s forever gone. While maybe John Wolcott will never be as famous as Erastus Corning or Nelson Rockeller, the truth is activists like him preserved some of the city’s most important history and lands, raised important questions made a difference again the Democratic machine, often at great personal cost.

While he did pretty well when “Republican” Theresa Cook (ala that time Rezsin Adams ran as a “Republican” for county legislature) was running the county clerk’s office, other times he was attacked tooth and nail for his performance as a title searcher for the county, even though he was probably the best title searcher and researcher of deeds and history the county ever had. I came across his lawsuit today drying out his papers along with the numerous exhibits on Albany County corruption and sneaky misdeeds or the Erastus Corning machine and by that time Jim Coyne’s county operations. The Corning machine was only really interested in punishing male dissidents, they couldn’t see in their minds that women could have any influence of politics. Ultimately it was the federal District Court that sided with him and had him reinstated but he fought for years to get the pension credit he deserved going back to the days when he was a consultant for Fort Orange 787 dig. The Fort Orange file got wetter than I thought but we got it apart drying. It will be saved. And while, maybe the history books write differently, certainly it was John Wolcott who helped to take down Jim Coyne through alerting the FBI to Coyne’s crooked deal over the Knickerbocker Arena, although like with Fort Orange and Paul Huey, the credit can’t necessarily be just his own.

And then as I was going through the papers, putting dried ones away I heard a screech and bang, and a car crashed into the traffic light pole at South Swan and Morton Avenue, causing the 100 plus lb traffic light to break free of the wire. The clearly fleeing car then took off leaking what appeared to be coolant. Police showed up, hauled the broken stop light off the road, talked to the neighbors and took off. Not sure what happened to the fleeting crashed car, I was too busy sorting papers. Albany is going downhill rapidly, things were looking up in the city not that long ago. I’m just glad I’ve been taking the bus there rather than driving especially with the neighborhoods getting so rough. I still remember that last time I walked down to Sheridan Hollow to visit John, a firearm rang out as somebody shot out a car window.

While working on John’s papers, I’ve been going through the EIS for a project in Troy and some Pine Bush issues in Guilderland with some tax data and GIS Mapping. People have gotten to know all the amazing things that I can do and I get more and more requests. It seems like everywhere I’m going I’m getting sucked into fights against City Hall everywhere, me with public records and free software, going up against million dollar reports with expensive professional software, internal only data and decades of training and experience. But if we don’t raise questions and fight development then who will? It’s tough as these professionals have big budgets and skills, but if house wife Jane Jacobs could stop Robert Moses, then so can ordinary people like myself. Not going to win every fight but it’s good to raise questions and stop bad development where we can. Even if it’s a pain to the local Bob Moses of today. It’s important we protect open space. Even if it involves some risk to myself and makes me not trust or respect most government workers.

Beyond all those wet and smokey papers and battling City Hall it’s been a crazy week for sure. The legislative session is wrapping up and I’ve been swamped with work, I was going through agendas for work well into the night on Saturday night. It’s been a crush at work and when I’m not in the office most of the time until late I’ve been drying out papers. I did get some bird watching in at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center this morning – saw a red tailed hawk being harassed by a few sparrows on the way out walking out there. I continue to back up, photograph and store important documents electronically in case of a disaster.

And then I’m also finally dealing with some of my own issues in my life. The counseling I’m getting is helping, it seems consistent with the advice I’m reading from trustworthy sources and publications on the internet. But change comes hard especially with bad habits of both negative thinking and repeated thoughts in thinking I’ve had ingrained for two decades now. I’m trying to change but it’s hard. I’m certainly learning a lot, becoming a better person because of counseling.

And I was doing better until the mixed emotions of Mr. Wolcott’s house fire – grief and sense of lostmy work sorting and carefully cataloging documents would be forever lost. But we saved a lot. But the shock and horror of it all, seeing that house in such disarray and burnt – that only a week ago before the fire when I was sorting and filing papers things looked so different. Plus all that stuff going to the Rensselaer landfill to be buried and forever viewed from my downtown office as a dirt and grass covered hill. Fire can be so bad, especially in the urban areas. Then I saw the other side tonight out in the country, the place I grew up. My parents neighbors, the ones who live in trailers and raise pigs and cows, were having a big ol bonfire, drinking beer burning an old couch, mattress and pallets with lots of black smoke. I’m so jealous of their homestead, even if they are what the government calls poor people who live in rundown trailers and barns. Kind of like that film about Appalachia I’ve been watching. But the country life is a life I’ll get to eventually, saving a bit each paycheck.

… Fire can destroy but it can cleanse too. That’s what my therapist reminds me.

August 29, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and damp around 70 degrees on Delmar. โ˜๏ธ There is a west breeze at 13 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 67 degrees. The skies will clear around 9 pm.

Not a super nice day so I stayed home ๐Ÿก and read and worked on a variety of little projects. I wanted to go for an evening walk ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿป but the threat of rain was much too high. Tomorrow I’ll get out hiking. Put together some new maps ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธand stuff for the blog, was reading another book ๐Ÿ“™ about homesteading. ๐Ÿ Cheeses and dairy science is fascinating stuff ๐Ÿง€ – minor changes in processing milk ๐Ÿฅ› can create vastly different effects products or more likely ruin it entirely.

I finally baked up that cookie mix ๐Ÿชthat expired in April. Good peanut ๐Ÿฅœ butter cookies that I bought last fall for my West Virginia trip but never eat. ๐Ÿ˜‹ I figured I better eat it before the mice get in an chew holes in the packaging.๐ŸIt’s been a bad year for mice in the woods – something people were talking about yesterday on Facebook and I noticed we’re bad both in the Finger Lakes and Piseco Powley Road.

Tonight will have a slight chance of showers before 11pm. Partly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 58 degrees at 5am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 67 at 9pm. West wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became partly cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 57 degrees. The record low of 38 occurred back in 1982.

Tonight will have a Waxing Gibbous ๐ŸŒ” Moon with 90% illuminated. At 9 PM, the moon was in the south-southeast (156ยฐ) at an altitude of 21ยฐ from the horizon, some 239,388 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by February 27th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The darkest hour is at 12:57 am, followed by dawn at 5:49 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:19 am in the east-northeast (77ยฐ) and last for 2 minutes and 59 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 4 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:56 am with sun in the east (83ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours and 44 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 72 degrees at 3pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around September 16th. Maximum dew point of 58 at 7am. Northwest wind 13 to 15 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 82 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1953. The great Heat Wave of 1953.

Should be a nice autumn like day. ๐Ÿ‚ Nice change from the humidity and stormy weather today. I am thinking of doing some hiking and fishing ๐ŸŽฃ at Partridge Run tomorrow. Should be a great day to spend outdoors but maybe a bit chilly by the time I go out to my parents house for Sunday dinner. ๐Ÿฒ But then again, Tuesday is September. Summer has quickly bit the dust.

I get so tired of hearing so many police ๐Ÿšจ sirens lately. The past few months they really have been abusing them it seems. For a while they were relatively quiet, tapping the sirens only briefly at the traffic light ๐Ÿšฆ to warn motorists but lately it’s been non-stop and it’s annoying. That and the super throaty motorcycles and trucks ๐Ÿ. Maybe I’m noticing it more this year as I’m home all of the time I’m not in the woods enjoying the quiet. ๐Ÿคซ

I am planning my next trip after Labor Day Weekend. ๐Ÿ‚ I’ll have to get out my blaze orange and gun cleaned up at that point. I’m thinking the Spectulator Area most likely especially if I’m planning several weekdays because the library is a pleasant place to work for Zoom Meetings. After October 1st I might camp and work from a combination of Stoney Pond State Forest and Charles Baker. โ›บ I can probably get Wi-Fi at the Cazenovia and Hamilton libraries out there for Zoom. Remote work has its benefits. ๐Ÿ’ปNo permit is needed for Stoney Pond State Forest after October 1st and it’s unlikely I’ll see anyone there except maybe a grizzled old hunter. ๐ŸŽซ Fishing in Nelson Swamp is a lot of fun too.

I really enjoy reading and looking at pictures of folks off grid properties on the Facebook. ๐Ÿก I just really like the simple and the small with lots of land in remote country. Some folks are really fancy or big builders but that certainly aint me. Some are into art work and making things pretty but I’m fine with chipboard for walls. The less you have, the less to spend money on, the less to break or have to throw away regularly. ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ

I’ve considered doing a trip in October to the Finger Lakes ๐Ÿ’ป and remote working from there but I have concerns about the length of day and having enough sunlight then to keep things charged and the long trip back to Albany after hours should something break that I can’t continue to work from there likedead fuse, inverter or other problems with the solar system which I couldn’t fix in the field. โฌ› It would be fun though to enjoy the leaves, ๐Ÿ hunt before 9 AM ๐Ÿฟ๏ธ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿฆƒand then work the rest of the day from camp but maybe exhausting to boot. At the National Forest you can camp for two weeks in one site, no permits required.

I also don’t want to put on too many miles or break shit in my truck ๐Ÿ”งbefore the state inspection in November. Since addressing the tire wear issue on the truck in June things have been a lot better at slowing the wear and I’m not concerned about this year’s inspection but I also don’t want to have any kind of costly repairs this autumn if possible. ๐Ÿ”ฉ

In four weeks on September 26 the sun will be setting in the west (269ยฐ) at 6:45 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 49 minutes and 15 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had partly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 69 and 53 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 68 and 47 degrees. The record high of 90 degrees was set back in 2017.

Looking ahead, Northern Zone Regular Season ๐ŸฆŒ is in 7 weeks, Halloween ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ and the Blue Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 9 weeks, Small Business Saturday ๐Ÿ›๏ธ is in 13 weeks, Repeal of Prohibition Day ๐Ÿบ is in 14 weeks, Boxing Day ๐ŸฅŠ is in 17 weeks, Cold Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 4 months, Static Electric Shock Day ๐Ÿงผ is in 19 weeks, National Cheese Lovers Day ๐Ÿง€ is in 21 weeks, 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 5 months, Save the Pine Bush Turns 43 ๐Ÿฆ‹ is in 23 weeks, 5:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† is in 25 weeks, Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks and Snow Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 26 weeks.

Schoharie Valley

August 12, 2020 Evening

Good evening! Mostly clear and 73 degrees at the Finger Lakes National Forest. There is a north breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. A very nice evening, might even want a long sleeved shirt ๐Ÿ‘š by morning. No fan tonight for me in the truck cap. โ˜ข๏ธ

I did everything that I planned today without feeling rushed. ๐Ÿ˜Š I too often feel like I am running ๐Ÿƒ from park to park ๐Ÿž on vacation and not taking time to relax. But this year with the pandemic smoldering in the background and an otherwise busy season with work I’ve been taking it slow and doing a lot of reading ๐Ÿ“– and relaxing ๐Ÿ› while still enjoying the Finger Lakes. I’ve limited the number of parks I plan to visit and are staying at the same campsite โ›บ with no cell service ๐Ÿ”• all eight nights to avoid set up and take down. After vacation, work is going to be non-stop as a supervisor, and I’ll be on call ๐Ÿ“ž virtually all the time through November.

Caywood Point was interesting to explore on Seneca Lake. ๐Ÿ›ฅ I bet it’s fun to camp dorm there on a very starry night. ๐ŸŒƒ Some folks had tents pitched right on the shoreline – I guess you don’t have to worry about the tide on a Finger Lake. Seemed like an interesting group of people who hang out there. I should think about going back there and do some fishing ๐ŸŽฃ off the dock or go for a swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ there.

I hiked part of the Catherine Valley Rail Trail ๐Ÿš‚ through the Catherine Marsh WMA aka Bad Indian Swamp. ๐ŸŒฟI am sure the later is disfavored as a name, with the preference today recalling Seneca Chief Catherine Montour, although to this day there are towns that recall the first and last name, so the natives are hardly forgotten. ๐Ÿธ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ๐Ÿข And I doubt the old name was referring to a Bad Indian, just that it was a large, thick area that was marshy and filled with reeds and difficult to pass until the Barge Canal and later the railroad tracks and NY 14 on the east shore. ๐ŸŒพThe swamp is largely reeds, probably the best views from the rail trail are of the Barge Canal. At least from the trail it didn’t stink of sewage. ๐Ÿ’ฉ

Then I went for a quick swim ๐ŸŠ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ at Watkins Glen State Park. Nobody was manning the toll booth so I didn’t have to show my Empire Passport ๐Ÿ›‚. But the pool was open and mostly empty and lead to a nice cool way to break up the evening and cool down.

I went to Tops and stocked up on some food. ๐Ÿฅฉ I bought some boneless chicken which I realized at camp was actually pork chops. ๐Ÿ– I have nothing against pork, it was good with the rice I bought, stuck in a nice hamburger role, washed down and with some beer ๐Ÿป. I also stopped at Glen Dairy Bar and got a large dish of soft ice cream ๐Ÿง dipped in peanut butter ๐Ÿฅœ. That was good.

Then before dark I went kayaking ๐Ÿ›ถ from the Watkins Glen boat launch. I was going to paddle up to Hector Point but on the way up there I was warned by another kayaker that the water was choppy once you got beyond the bend, and after paddling a few more minutes agreed it seems a bit rough and didn’t want to get caught on open water and ended up just paddling along the south end of the lake by Clute Park. ๐ŸŽฃ Had my fishing pole but the lake was so rough and the south end of the lake so shallow I decided it wasn’t worth it.

Got back to camp around eight, ๐Ÿ•๏ธ cooked up the pork chops ๐Ÿฅฉ and rice ๐Ÿš had dinner and started a fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ and laid back in the hammock. I forgot to buy coffee โ˜• today, I’ll have to get some tomorrow. Ice is not holding up well in the heat ๐ŸŒก๏ธ, I may need to get more at any rate tomorrow and can get coffee at the same time.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 59 degrees at 3am. Two degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around August 21st. Maximum dew point of 54 at 10pm. North wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It was sticky. It got down to 67 degrees. The record low of 43 occurred back in 1957.

Tonight will have a Last Quarter ๐ŸŒ— Moon with 37% illuminated. The Strugeon ๐Ÿก Moon is on Wednesday, August 26. The darkest hour is at 1:13 am, followed by dawn at 5:42 am, and sun starting to rise at 6:12 am in the east-northeast (69ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 5 seconds. Sunrise is one minute and 3 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:51 am with sun in the east-northeast (75ยฐ). Tonight will have 10 hours of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 28 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 82 degrees at 3pm. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical day around August 9th. Maximum dew point of 57 at 5pm. Calm wind becoming northeast around 6 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning, which became cloudy by afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 81 degrees. The record high of 98 was set in 1947.

While I’m not totally sure and left the kayak on my truck, I am thinking tomorrow would be a good day for hiking. ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿฝ I am thinking about the Dresden – Penn Yann rail trail as I’ve never explored that part of the Finger Lakes and that was recommended to me on Facebook. Apparently this trail follows the old railroad grade in the gorge along the Penn Yann outlet. ๐Ÿž Sounds intreguing in my book but I should read up on it before making the trip in the morning.

I’ve been having a few problems uploading photos ๐Ÿ“ธ today, there was a glitch in my new phone uploader that I built but I think it’s working now. I still have to upload photos from kayaking ๐Ÿ›ถ this evening on Seneca Lake but that will have to wait until tomorrow when I have better cell service ๐Ÿ“ถ.

I was saddened to hear about the passing of Reszin Adams, ๐Ÿ˜” who has been called the alpha activist of Albany. Not only did she bake lasagna for every Pine Bush Dinner for 35 plus years, she was involved in everything from protesting the Vietnam War to Aprahid in South Africa.

I don’t know where things stand with the documentary ๐Ÿ“น I was working with Cynthia Pooler on her – we cut some n roll at her birthday party ๐ŸŽ‚ in February but when she pandemic hit everything kind of stopped except for video editing. I barely know how to use the camera but we did interview several people om Reszin. Definitely sad news for everybody in the Capital Region that cared about progress and change.

At least I got to know her a little bit more than Theresa Cooke, ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผ the lady who confronted Erastus Corning and made a big difference in openness and change in the Albany County Democratic Machine.๐Ÿด I had met Cooke at Pine Bush dinners in her late years but never knew the difference she made in the 1970s. She just struck me as some kind of activist but I never asked any questions until I learned about her history upon her death.

In four weeks on September 9 the sun will be setting in the west (277ยฐ) at 7:27 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 45 minutes and 25 seconds earlier then today. In 2019 on that day, we had mostly sunny, patches of fog and temperatures between 73 and 49 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 75 and 54 degrees. The record high of 94 degrees was set back in 1959.

Looking ahead, National Dog Day ๐Ÿฉ is in 2 weeks, Corn Moon ๐ŸŒ• is in 3 weeks, SORRY NO NOT NATIONAL CORN DOG DAY, Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ is in 2 months, Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 11 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 12 weeks, Veterans Day ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ is in 13 weeks, Earliest Sunset of the Year โŒ›๏ธ is in 17 weeks, Tea Party Day ๐Ÿ is in 18 weeks, Festivus ๐Ÿ– is in 19 weeks, Bacon Day ๐Ÿฅ“ is in 20 weeks, Make Your Dream Come True Day ๐Ÿก is in 22 weeks, Inauguration Day โœ… is in 23 weeks, Clean Your Computer Day ๐Ÿงน is in 26 weeks and Presidents Day ๐Ÿ‘ด is in 27 weeks.

Clouds Hanging Low

May 30, 2020 Night

Good evening! Cloudy and 60 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a west-northwest breeze at 10 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. The dew point is 53 degrees. The skies will clear tomorrow around noontime.

I thought today was a pleasant day. ๐Ÿ’ญ Warm but not too hot. While I stuck around home for a while this morning, the bird hike I took at Schodack Island was quite productive and full of wildlife. ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฐ ๐Ÿ Not too many crowds on the hiking trail ๐Ÿ‘ช, I think people’s initial desire to get outdoors and be occupied with the little ones is kind of wearing off and most of that’s now happening on weekdays. โ˜ Clouds pushed in at the end of the day.

Rained a bit while I was driving home but I stocked up on $50 worth of Aldi’s groceries. ๐Ÿ I love ๐Ÿ˜ how I can shop for a weeks worth of groceries and be out of the store in less than ten minutes. โฐThere are only four aisles so it’s quick in and out. One other customer when I was there. They’ve taken the arrows down from the aisles โžก as nobody pays attention to them and with the way the store is laid out the arrows don’t work compared to a big box store. I don’t even bother to bring my shopping bags inside anymore, I just bag things in my truck. Keeps them cleaner and more Coronavirus free that way. ๐Ÿ‘พ

I made chilli burgers ๐Ÿ” for lunch and they were good but I’ve sure been a bit gassy ๐Ÿ˜ฒ all afternoon. Chilli with beans on a burger might not be good combo for my stomach. I thought I was going to have to dig a cat hole ๐Ÿ’ฉ a few times when I was out hiking.

I am happy with the haircut โœ‚ I gave myself. Definitely a lot shorter and nicer. I might still want to work on the back. ๐Ÿ’ˆ I had the clippers so I might as well use them. Eventually I go back to the barber but I think I’ll just use the trimmers for now until things are normal enough that masks and specialty are no longer required. ๐Ÿ’‡

Tonight will have isolated showers before midnight. Mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒง, with a low of 49 degrees at 6am. Three degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around May 23rd. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. In 2019, we had mostly clear skies. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 55 degrees. The record low of 34 occurred back in 1961.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 63% illuminated. At 11 PM, the moon was in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) at an altitude of 38ยฐ from the horizon, some 226,878 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by November 18th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Strawberry ๐Ÿ“ Moon is on Friday, June 5. The darkest hour is at 12:54 am, followed by dawn at 4:48 am, and sun starting to rise at 5:22 am in the east-northeast (59ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 23 seconds. Sunrise is 32 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 6:04 am with sun in the east-northeast (66ยฐ). Tonight will have 8 hours and 55 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 21 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 64 degrees at 4pm. 10 degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 30th. Northwest wind 10 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 76 degrees. The record high of 92 was set in 2013.

Getting up early tomorrow for hiking in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve ๐ŸŒฒ to do some birding and socially distant citizens conservation study. The more time you spend in the woods the more you. ๐Ÿธ I’m really finding myself getting lost and loosing track of time when I spend afternoons studying the woods. It will be great fun with my colleagues.

Watching next weekends forecast โ˜€ but it looks sunny and hot for Thursday through Sunday. My office ๐Ÿข will probably still be remote work only so I could work from my phone or the Speculator library if I wanted to take another long weekend of social distancing up north. I could use some more beach time at the Speculator Beach ๐ŸŠ and maybe come the weekend do some hiking, maybe somewhere different up that way.

In four weeks on June 27 the sun will be setting in the west-northwest (303ยฐ) at 8:37 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 12 minutes and 5 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had hot, mostly sunny, shallow fog and temperatures between 87 and 63 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 81 and 60 degrees. The record high of 97 degrees was set back in 1941.

While I know I probably shouldn’t be, ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ’ฅI’ve been watching the unrest unfold in Albany on the Twitter. I heard a few pops earlier in the evening and a police siren but I doubt it’s related. ๐Ÿ‘ฎ Probably just a fender bender locally ๐Ÿš™ on the road. Kind of scary when you watch it all on the Twitter. I hope my absentee ballot applications โŒ isn’t destroyed or lost in the chaos in the south end. I could always vote on the machine but voting at home is a lot more convenient, especially as I suspect there will be much fewer poll workers and polling places โœ‰ during the pandemic.

After all those people looking down at the apparently crowded beaches on the long angle lens and then those dismissing the lock ๐Ÿ”’ down protests as passing the virus around, ๐Ÿ‘พ you have to wonder about these mass rallies over policing across the country. I just don’t like double standards or the bias against conservatives ๐ŸŠ .

Of course, no single event is likely to make a mass spike in cases of Coronavirus ๐Ÿ‘พas single events are burried by statistical noiseโ™’ but together they could set back progress at slowing the spread. You can say no mass gatherings of more than 10 people โœŠ but it’s kind of hard to break up a protest that is criticizing public policy and clearly is first amendment guaranteed. ๐Ÿ“ƒ So much for reopening the economy so quickly should there be an uptick in cases.

I guess there isn’t much I can do about it. ๐Ÿ’ญ My priority has to be to save money, ๐Ÿ’ต enjoy life, protect myself from the government ๐Ÿซ and work for a better tomorrow and eventually my off-grid property. ๐Ÿก I can’t save Albany or change the world ๐ŸŒ but I can make a better life for myself. What’s happening is kind of sad but there is only so much I can do about it.

Looking ahead, Summer ๏ธโ›ฑ๏ธ is in 3 weeks.

 Catskills In The Distance

March 28, 2020 Morning

Good morning! Happy Average High is 50 ๐ŸŒธ! That’s a real sign of spring. Three weeks to Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ. Partly sunny and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. Calm wind.

I don’t think it was a bad idea ๐Ÿ’ก to stay home this weekend. Last night was beautiful ๐ŸŒƒ but it got chilly around eleven, though I’m sure it wouldn’t have been bad by a campfire. ๐Ÿ”ฅ Hoping for better weather next week, and maybe taking a three day weekend. Heck, maybe I can even work one day from camp if it’s sunny and quiet out. โ›บ

Today will rain likely, โ˜” mainly after 5pm. Increasing clouds ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 53 degrees at 2pm. Three degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around April 3rd. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 8 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with a few breaks of sun the afternoon. The high last year was 55 degrees. The record high of 85 was set in 1945. 14.2 inches of snow fell back in 1932.โ„

The plan for today is to walk ๐Ÿšถ at Schodack Island State Park โ›ฒ, return the broken MIFI adapter and pick up the work laptop, ๐Ÿ’ป get the Reszin Adam’s newspaper clippings ๐Ÿ“ฐ from John Wolcott, come home and work on my DEIS comments ๐Ÿ“ regarding the proposed Crossgates Development in the Pine Bush.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 1:01 pm with sun having an altitude of 50.6ยฐ from the due south horizon (-20.2ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 4.9 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 6:40 pm with the sun in the west (269ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west (275ยฐ) starting at 7:15 pm and lasts for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:45 pm, which is one minute and 8 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the west-southwest (256ยฐ) at an altitude of 40ยฐ from the horizon, 246,203 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 8:19 pm. At sunset, look for rain ๐ŸŒง and temperatures around 47 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. Today will have 12 hours and 34 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 52 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain. ๐ŸŒง Low of 42 degrees at 4am. 11 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around April 28th. Southeast wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. At least that should get the salt off the roads and help things from getting too dried out, but it certainly won’t help with the mud. In 2019, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became light rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 44 degrees. The record low of 0 occurred back in 1923.

Tomorrow morning early on, I’ll run to the laundromat ๐Ÿ‘š and go grocery shopping. ๐Ÿ I am probably not going to see my parents this weekend but we’ll see. I’ll call them and see how they go they’re doing. ๐Ÿ“ž I’ve been pretty isolated this week but you never know and they should stay away from senior citizens.

As previously noted, there are 3 weeks until Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒผ when the sun will be setting at 7:41 pm with dusk at 8:10 pm. On that day in 2019, we had cloudy skies, rain showers and temperatures between 58 and 46 degrees. Albany hit a record high of 90 back in 1976.

October 14, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Columbus Day ๐Ÿ›ฅ๏ธ! For me it means the second half of the trip back home ๐Ÿก from West Virginia and getting unpacked. Two weeks to Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚. Mostly sunny and 46 degrees at the Mount Pisgah County Park. There is a southwest breeze at 7 mph. ๐Ÿƒ.

I was up at 6:15 am this morning, ๐ŸŒ„as I had chilli last night and too much beer ๐Ÿป and had to visit the outhouse early on. ๐Ÿ’ฉ Being I was in a campground it was a short walk but at least I got things taken down early and I’m stopping at the Mount Pisgah County Park for a bit.

Columbus Day will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 56 degrees at 1pm. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 25th. West wind 7 to 13 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies. The high last year was 59 degrees. The record high of 81 was set in 1920.

So the October Road Trip is almost over. Just have to make it home safely and unpack. Then out to the folks house. It was a good trip although not the one I had originally planned. ๐Ÿš™ The burn ban made me alter my plans and for a while I wasn’t planning on going to West Virginia. ๐Ÿ“› Time marches on, that’s all I can say.

But I did and spent three nights there before overnighting in County Bridge Campground outside of Troy, Penna last night. Only night in a developed campground. We other sites were taken but none nearby and it was very quiet there. Nice thing about the developed area is no bucket shitter ๐Ÿ’ฉ to empty and bury the poop, and I don’t have to take down my table so a faster take down this morning.

Dash cam ๐ŸŽฅ didn’t record for part of the trip back but I didn’t have all that much great to save. I did get some nice clips to post on the blog later this week. Stay tuned!

The sun will set at 6:27 pm with dusk around 6:55 pm, which is one minute and 36 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 50 degrees. There will be a west-northwest breeze at 9 mph. Today will have 11 hours and 9 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 44 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will have patchy frost after 5am. Otherwise, partly cloudy ๐ŸŒค, with a low of 35 degrees at 5am. Five degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 31st. West wind 5 to 7 mph. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 39 degrees. The record low of 27 occurred back in 1978.

I could have done the New River Gorge and spent the balance of my trip in West Virginia ๐Ÿ˜” but it seemed like the burn ban was going to be in place for most of the week. Sure I have the propane heater and electric lights ๐Ÿšฅ ๐Ÿ’ก but there is something about having a fire each night, if only a small fire is o provide some entertainment and company and take care of the burn trash. ๐Ÿ”ฅ So many wet wipes to get rid of when you are using them as your primary way to clean up your body. Maybe I should have stuck to the original plan but the Allegheny National Forest was neat as was visiting Pennsylvania High Point, Cook Forest and Hoye-Crest in Maryland.

It wasn’t a bad night, and it’s a convient place to stay at between Albany and West Virginia, โ›บ about half way between the two places at least if your like me and want to stay some place relatively quiet and cheap, while limiting driving to 4 hours a day, leaving the remaining time to visit parks or hop on back roads. That said, I’d prefer to camp somewhere I can gather up my own wood, listen to music ๐ŸŽถ as loud as I want, not have to worry about bothering anyone with the smoke. At least I could have a decent fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ because I had some leftover wood from Stewart’s that I bought for the trip down and I used the Big Buddy Hester to keep my chair comfortable. Cold enough I wish I could have hot tented but I wasn’t going to pitch a tent for one night. It was fine under the covers.

I thought the Cannan Refuge was a disappointment but maybe the second seven miles down the rough dirt road would have been better. ๐Ÿฆ The part I explored was the standard mixed forest, nothing much better than the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center I walk ๐Ÿšถ to from home. At any rate, I was expecting something more marshy and full of birds like Montezuma. But it’s just not that kind of area. Moreover, the weather wasn’t all that great compared to the original forecast for yesterday.

Stopped at the Blue Knob State Park. ๐Ÿ—ป Kind of dead this time of year with the ski resort closed. And it was a rather gray day which sort of blocked the view and made it harder to see from the summit. I wonder if Blue Knob is the second highest peak in Pennsylvania. Nice country driving through Imler and surrounding lands. Good farmland, big dairies ๐Ÿ„ around there.

Most of the drive up through Pennsylvania was fairly overcast and not real nice. โ˜ The colors weren’t very good either. Passed some nice farm country in Pennsylvania. Mostly dairy ๐Ÿฎ but some hogs ๐Ÿฝ, chickens ๐Ÿ”, sheep ๐Ÿ‘ etc. Grains like corn ๐ŸŒฝ and soybeans too ๐ŸŒพ. Lots of Amish and Menonites along PA 26 and the Nittany Valley farming. I get not owning a car or living off grid but having no solar seems a bit extreme. But I guess if you can’t make it yourself, you shouldn’t own it. ๐Ÿšœ I do have a lot of respect for the Amish even if their environmental record is a bit mixed. They do use some technology like silage wrap on their farms – which being Pennsylvania I’m sure is burned when discarded.

Driving ๐Ÿš˜ up through Pennsylvania I can assure still plenty of rural households and farms in Pennsylvania that burn virtually everything – you could see the black smoke, the piles of burnt cans and glass and ash in folks backyards and bags of trash next to the burn barrel waiting to be torched. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I didn’t have to go far in Pennsylvania to see the first pile of junk people were burning in their driveway. Wood with other goodies in that fire. Also saw some one burning trash in Maryland too and a few rural houses in West Virginia with burn barrels out back. Beats the landfill in my view, despite the sometimes stench ๐Ÿ‘ƒ, although I think I would seperate out the cans and glass for recycling โ™ป when I own my own land – and maybe build some kind of better incinerator than the common burn barrel most folks use. ๐Ÿ‘ I can tell you as a fact there isn’t much burn trash I’m taking home from camp. Seems like a waste especially of the tin cans to throw the metal away – and it’s not like they burn or help the fire at all.

I decided to get off Interstate 99 at PA 414 through Liberty, Penna๐Ÿ—ฝ . Talk about a windy, narrow state highway in country that at worse was rolling. ๐Ÿš™ I don’t understand why it’s such a bad road. Scenic yes, but hardly a good route to travel. At least not as bumpy and rough as River Road. But obnoxiously slow. I was having problems my phone not charging the whole time ๐Ÿ“ฑ, fortunately though I had enough power for Waze to direct me to destination.

I could go to West Virginia possibly next November but who knows. ๐Ÿ˜• I might have to do a recount for work, and snow โ›„ is always a possibility like last year. I know I don’t want anything to do with West Virginia if snow and ice conditions are even a remote possibility. No thanks for sure. 2021 if I decide to go back, it might be a a very different experience if I decide to go car-less that year and have to rent a car. ๐Ÿš™ It might be fun to see West Virginia in a rented car especially a hybrid electric car on those hills. Wouldn’t have to be as gentle on the rough roads either. Always worry about breaking Big Red down there. Another possibility would be a trip – probably by plane โœˆ and rental car to see Missouri and the Midwest that year.

The past two nights have been bright ๐Ÿ”† with the moonlight ๐ŸŒ•. Woke up Saturday night hot tent camping to take a piss in West Virginia and the inside of the tent was bright from the moonlight. Bitterly cold Sunday morning – I woke up and it was 26 degrees out. But after turning the Big Buddy heater on things he warned up quickly.

It was a good trip and generally came below budget ๐Ÿ’ธas I spent less time in West Virginia then originally expected. The bad weather โ˜” a few days meant I drank more beer ๐Ÿป then originally planned but I drove fewer miles โ›ฝ even when you consider I started my week in the Allegheny National Forest. ๐ŸŒฒOnly spent one night in a campground, keeping those expenses lower and my food expenses were only slightly higher than normal – and I have left overs for future weeks to eat. Wet wipes, paper plates and towels, plastic forks, ๐Ÿด etc too – seems like a waste to use once and burn ๐Ÿ”ฅ but when camping water ๐Ÿ’ฆ is a precious commodity and its nice to stay clean as possible.

Tomorrow is a pay day ๐Ÿ‘and it’s a three paycheck month so by the time the November credit card ๐Ÿ’ณ bill is due with the brake job on my truck and vacation expenses I’ll hopefully have my fund balance rebuilt. I can return some of the unspent cash to the bank.๐Ÿ’ฐ I really needed to get away from Albany for a bit, go to some places much culturally and socially different from Albany. Despite the tight finances, I’m still sticking to my savings and investing plan. Travel and camping expenses will decline come winter but eventually I’ll be paying for heat ๐Ÿ”ฅ again but so it goes. I want to do some winter camping but the conditions have to be right and it won’t be an every day thing.

Definitely looking for a good shower when I get home. ๐Ÿšฟ It’s been ten days – Saturday October 5th since I’ve washed my full body. I’ve tried to keep as clean as possible but it’s hard when you are in the backcountry in October and you can’t really go for a swim ๐ŸŠ to clean your body. Did lots of hiking too ehic produces a lot of sweat. ๐Ÿ˜ฐ

Generated and consumed a kilowatt of power through the solar panel over the past week. โ˜€ I wonder how much total power I consumed as I frequently used the alternator to top off accessory batteries. ๐Ÿ”‹ Generally the system worked well. Once or twice the low voltage disconnect kicked in but that was one time due to a heavier load and one time in a dark morning in the cold pulling a decent load the voltage โšก dropped under the threshold. The sun rose, voltage increased and the load was automatically reconnected when safe. Driving ๐Ÿš˜ home I’m charging the laptop and running all accessory loads exclusively on the solar.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Saturday, mostly sunny, with a high near 56. Sunday, mostly sunny, with a high near 61. Maximum dew point of 49 at 7pm. Typical average high for the weekend is 59 degrees. Should be great weather for the Save the Pine Bush hike! ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒ๐ŸŒฒWe are doing a walk down Rapp Road, it should be a nice one. Maybe fall foliage hike ๐Ÿšถ on Sunday?

As previously noted, there are 2 weeks until Average High is 55 ๐Ÿ‚ when the sun will be setting at 6:07 pm with dusk at 6:35 pm. On that day in 2018, we had mostly cloudy, rain showers and temperatures between 51 and 41 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 55 degrees. We hit a record high of 78 back in 1971.

 Morning

September 18, 2019 Night

Good evening! Clear and 53 degrees at the Delmar. ๐ŸŒŸ Calm wind. Going to be a cold night. I thought about closing my windows but the heat is off and it’s not expected to get below freezing in Albany. I’ll just enjoy the hot coffee โ˜• come morning.

Tonight will be mostly clear ๐ŸŒƒ, with a low of 42 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 8th. Calm wind. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It was somewhat humid. It got down to 60 degrees. The record low of 32 occurred back in 1959.

Tonight will have a Waning Gibbous Moon ๐ŸŒ– with 70% illuminated. The moon will set at 11:46 am. The Last Quarter Moon is on Friday night. The Hunter Moon ๐ŸŒ is on Saturday, October 12th. The sun will rise at 6:38 am with the first light at 6:09 am, which is one minute and 5 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ Tonight will have 11 hours and 38 minutes of darkness, an increase of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will have patchy fog before 8am. Otherwise, sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 71 degrees at 3pm. Typical for tomorrow. Calm wind. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was sticky. The high last year was 75 degrees. The record high of 90 was set in 1946.

Doug Bullock’s Speech to Save the Pine Bush was quite good. ๐Ÿ“ข No bull horn this time. He will be missed in the county legislature – he’s still on the Working Families line but I think most people know it’s time to move on. He can continue his activism in new ways. I helped him out on his first campaign 12 years ago but the democrats in his district apparently wanted a change – and his progressive advocacy never won him much in the way of corporate contributions.๐ŸŒฒI don’t agree with Doug on every issue but he’s a good guy in politics, for all the right reasons. โœŠ

So it looks like the proposal to re-power the ANSWERS plant and generate electricity is officially dead. ๐Ÿญ They’re going to tear it down instead build more solar on the plaza and in Oneida County and replace more of the lighting with solid state fixtures. It was so weird that they announced it during the Save the Pine Bush Dinner ๐Ÿ“ข while Doug Bullock was speaking a two days before the climate march. Doug has been very vocal about opposing the plans as has the folks in PAUSE and the No Fracked Gas pipeline people. ๐ŸŒŽ At this point, we really shouldn’t be investing in more fossil infrastructure and the truth is that they didn’t really need the co-generation plant – it was wish list type thing ๐Ÿ“ƒ. Can they build the hundreds of acres of solar needed to go 100% solar for the Plaza? Only time will tell. A hundred million dollars once allocated to build the co-generation plant ๐Ÿ’ต can buy a lot of panels. I do wonder though about outsourcing the panels to Oneida County.

I probably would have been involved with Doug’s campaign but I don’t get involved in politics much any more. ๐Ÿค Some of its my work takes a lot of my time but also I’m less interested in politics than in years past. I’m more interested in self improvement and investing in my own future. ๐Ÿ’ฐ Those who fight the good fight are doing God’s work but I don’t want to be part of the messy nature of politics. I just want to buffer myself from the harm of climate change and eventually own my own land out in the country in a freer state. ๐Ÿท

In four weeks on October 16 the sun will be setting at 6:12 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 48 minutes and 27 seconds earlier then tonight. In 2018 on that day, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 56 and 36 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 60 and 39 degrees. The record high of 88 degrees was set back in 1947.

Tomorrow evening I’ll run to the store and get a camp chair, and maybe boots ๐Ÿ‘ข and get packed up for the weekend. I plan to head north as soon as the Pine Bush hike is over on Saturday. Should be a really nice evening.

I’ve gotten a few maps and done some more research ๐Ÿ—พ on the New River Gorge. Most of the other places in West Virginia I’m quite familiar with so I don’t expect to need much research but I did also get a map for hiking Dolly Sods. I got to get out my big West Virginia Monongahela National Forest map – I think I know where it is in the crawl space – and do some more planning. I have one of those free maps from AAA of West Virginia Roads outside of the National Forest but I’m thinking about getting a better quality Rand McNally map too for better details. This year’s trip I want better planned then in 2017 which was kind of a mess as I was dealing with my mom being in the hospital ๐Ÿฅ.

Looking ahead, More Night then Day ๐ŸŒŒ is in 1 weeks, Average High is 65 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 2 weeks, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 7 weeks, Average Night Below Freezing ๐ŸŒŒ is in 8 weeks, Average High is 40 ๐ŸŒจ is in 11 weeks, Christmas ๐ŸŽ… is in 14 weeks, New Years Day 2019 ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 15 weeks, National Bird Day ๐Ÿฆ is in 17 weeks, Winnie the Pooh Day ๐Ÿฏ is in 4 months, 37th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 19 weeks and Inauguration Day 2021 ๐Ÿ‘ด๐Ÿป is in 70 weeks.
