Sunny and cold this President’s Day 🌞

After a rough night last including many trips too the bathroom after eating too much red lentil soup and beans, and then the smoke alarm going off at 3 AM, I’m up and going this morning. Started out my day stocking up my pantry with fruits, vegetables and other healthy eats for the week to come. A barely sub-$100 grocery bill, though not by much, but I’ve finally gotten to the point where my pantry had a few things left over from last week, and most of the unhealthy stuff from a year ago is now gone.

Good morning! Sunny and 26 degrees in Delmar, New York. 🌞 I wonder how many more times I’ll be saying that. It’s weird to think it might be coming to an end. Cool and blustery with a northwest breeze at 14 mph. 🍃. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. ☃ Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡️

It’s beautiful out today, but with the wind is fairly cold. 🌬 I’m actually not rushing to get out too soon, as I’m really hoping to speak to my new landlord again, about the questions and concerns I politely raised in an email on Saturday, ✉️ that he has not replied back to. I would feel much better if I had contact information, and if I could pay him via a mailed paper check, where the paper trail is clear in case of dispute of payment. 💵 Maybe I’m too fearful of him, but he reminds me of kid who beat the shit out of me in high school. 👊 You know, the kid who barely made it out of high school, and floats from job to job in the construction industry and on and off the unemployment rolls as his parents a dying from alcoholism and decades of chain of smoking. I feel rather sorry for him, as I think he’s become a really decent person even if he smashed my nose into the locker multiple times back in the day. I also am waiting for calls back from various mortgage loan officers, 📞 and want to talk to some friends out in the country 🐮 who have bought homes in recent years, and want to get their advice and tips.

Washington’s Birthday will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 31 degrees at 4pm. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical Northwest wind around 14 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 47 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1981. 11.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.❄

I do want to get out and do some hiking this afternoon, 🚶‍♀️hiking up Bennett Hill or maybe Wolf Hill. It’s sunny out but cold. But I need some of serenity of the wilderness, even if for only a few hours. 🌲Things are so crazy these days. 🤪 Then head out to the folks for Sunday dinner. 👪 It’s important to talk to as many people and listen to as much advice as possible. 👂 Time isn’t as tight and things aren’t as awful as I imagine them to be in my darker moments, but change is happening, and it’s happening much too fast. ⌛ With the stock market, my portfolio is good, and high interest rates may work in my favor, as I can offset more capital gains taxes from selling stocks in good market by using the mortgage tax exemption. 📜 God, that makes me feel old.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:10 pm with sun having an altitude of 36° from the due south horizon (-34.9° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 8.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 4:53 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (249°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (255°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 5:32 pm after setting for 3 minutes with dusk around 6:00 pm, which is one minute and 16 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Gibbous 🌔 Moon in the east (100°) at an altitude of 54° from the horizon, 243,483 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 6:34 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 29 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 10 mph. Today will have 10 hours and 47 minutes of daytime, an increase of 2 minutes and 43 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will be mostly clear 🌃, with a low of 15 degrees at 6am. Four degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 4th. Maximum wind chill around 17 at 6pm; Northwest wind 6 to 10 mph. In 2023, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 35 degrees. The record low of -16 occurred back in 1966.

Tuesday it’s back to work. 👨‍💼 I may drive in so I can retreat to my truck should bankers call to discuss mortgages, as I don’t have my private office yet, as the retiring director has a few more weeks left, though not much. It will be quite the operation to take over, and while I’ve learned a lot in these past 6 weeks and I have the skills to be an excellent leader, it’s scary, not least to say, as I’m replacing 40 plus years of experience. 🙀 But I have an excellent team I’m working with who will support me, and the reason why they trust me in such a place of high authority, is because I’ve delivered 16 1/2 years of results for my business. Still, it’s a big jump from being Deputy Director to Director, in an agency that doesn’t have deputy to fall back on. My bosses will just be several miles of up the road, and always there to support me, email and phone aren’t the same as sitting down in a room together. 👔 I might wear a suit and tie, but still a redneck inside. But I believe in myself and my future. Things could go terribly wrong, but I have a track record of success, and preponderance of the evidence is that I will do exceptionally well in the new position, especially with my knowledge of the R programming language, Unix shell scripting, C programming and technical aspects of Data Services.

Looking ahead to next weekend, it could be real nice. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 31. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 39. It’s early in the week, so I’ll take a wait and see approach. Go camping? 🏕 Who knows how busy I will be with the next steps in my life. 👣 Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Now we’re in the second half of February, things warm up quickly.

One month 📅 from now will be Last Day of Winter 🏂 when the sun will be setting at 7:08 pm with dusk at 7:35 pm (Daylight Savings Time). The average high temperature is 47 degrees, with a record high of 78 in 2021.

Hill Above Camp Cass

Tuesday, Tuesday. At least I think I can ride to work today 🤔

Three weeks from now it will be back to work in the new year. Going to take a few days off before Christmas though that week between Christmas and New Years I’ll have to be in the office downtown to supervise the unit as the other director is off and to pack up my office in preparation for the move. I figure I’ll come by the office after hours when parking is free to move boxes and my plants.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Mostly clear and 33 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 3 am. ☃️

Decent enough morning to ride to work. 🚲 Cool but that’s to be expected this time of year. Should be a good ride in. Only a few more days I expect to be able to ride in before it’s too snowy and I’m working out in the suburbs but we’ll see. At least when spring comes I won’t have to be doing the State Street Hill on my bike. 🚍 Plus riding the bike saves a buck thirty and the craziness 🤪 due to South Swan at the South Maul Arterial being closed due to the water 💦 main brake. I wonder if that’s fixed yet.

Today will be sunny 🌞, with a high of 43 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 2nd. South wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies. The high last year was 30 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 1979. 6.6 inches of snow fell back in 1970.❄

Just another work day. Rush project today. Should be a fairly busy day but it will make time go by quickly. Tomorrow is the annual work from home day, 🏡 I guess it’s part of the holiday celebration and allows people to bake cookies for cookie share day on Thursday. 🍪

Last night had a nice dinner. 🍲 That bean soup and bread was good last night but kept my stomach rumbling throughout the night. Had a bunch of Acorn Squash. Went for my evening walk 🚶. Got milk 🥛 last night which was good with the coffee ☕ and cranberry pancakes 🥞 this morning. Added shredded oranges to the top with some honey. 🍯Up at five o’clock ⏰ and then did some more of my class on artifical intelligence 🧠 and neural networks.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:50 am with sun having an altitude of 24.3° from the due south horizon (-46.5° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.3 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:38 pm with the sun in the southwest (231°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (239°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:23 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 24 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 7 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for clear skies 🌄 and temperatures around 40 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 10 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 39 seconds over today.

Tonight will have increasing clouds ☁, with a low of 30 degrees at 4am. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 22nd. South wind 6 to 9 mph. In 2022, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 8 degrees. The record low of -6 occurred back in 1988.

Tomorrow my truck gets inspected, oil changed and tires rotated. 🛻Working from home then. Baking cookies for bake cookies day at work. 🍪 I need to pull the hub caps off, I was going to do that this morning but I can do it tomorrow. I’m not worried, 😯 I think Big Red should pass inspection with ease.🔎The truck needs to be dropped off at the garage by 8:30 then I’ll ride home 🚲 and work from home or maybe the library depending on how much bandwidth I need.

Today, Pennsylvania becomes the second state to ratify the United States Constitution, 📜 five days after Delaware became the first on this day in 1787. It’s a nice document but only as good as the politicians and those appointed by the politicians that enforce it.

A picture perfect weekend on tap. 😎 Saturday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 43. Typical average high for the weekend is 38 degrees. Thinking of riding out to French’s Mills and or the Pine Bush Preserve on Saturday. 🚲 🌲

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Boxing Day 🥊 when the sun will be setting at 4:29 pm with dusk at 4:59 pm. Popular day for burning 🔥 all those Christmas boxes I guess. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 30 and 16 degrees. It’s a state holiday for me – Christmas Eve Observed I guess due to it being om a Sunday for folks traveling. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1895.

This Morning At The Bus Stop

Final month of twenty twenty three 🗓

Maybe it’s too soon to declare it time to stick a fork in it, but the writing is on the wall about the year. Looking at the rising sun taking the express bus downtown as it’s going to turn to rain by rush hour this evening. Listening to that Smash Mouth song, Waiting on the Sun — that I remember fondly hearing on the radio rolling down Interstate 99 at 73 mph heading past Tyrone Penna on the way to West Virginia. Thinking as the year comes to a close, won’t be that much longer that I’ll be working downtown, a big change after the two decades that was.

Good morning! December starts out sunny and mild but quickly fades to rain by evening. Mostly sunny ☀ and 36 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a south-southeast breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at Tuesday around 2 am. ☃️

Doesn’t look like I’ll need much of the central heat this weekend 🌧️ though maybe I’ll want the space heater and electric blanket as it’s going to be cool and damp. 🍞 Planning on making more bread and pea soup tomorrow morning bright and early.

Today started out a little bit later then normal 🛏 sleeping into around five thirty, which is late by my standards. Ran some onions, spinach, broccoli and eggs 🥚 through the food processor, tossed oil into a frying 🍳 pan and that was breakfast. Not a half bad breakfast. Kind of a sleepy this morning 😴, kind of had a rough night sleeping, which is unusual lately since I switched to rising early.

Maybe I could have biked to work today, 🚲 but they’re expecting fairly heavy rain by evening. 🌧 I didn’t really feel like grabbing my bike at end of day, unlocking it and loading it on the bus in the pouring rain. Didn’t seem like a fun way to enjoy my day. The thing is not much longer to ride the bike to work, as when I move to the new office in the suburbs, I’ll be taking the shuttle from downtown, and they don’t have a bike rack on that.

Today will rain, mainly after 3pm. 🌧️ High of 47 degrees at 12pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 22nd. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 40 degrees. The record high of 67 was set in 1934. 13.3 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

Morning started out nice, but I am not expecting it to last. 🌦 Still a bit cool for walking on the plaza, so I’ve been doing laps inside, and now are heading up the stairs to my office. Figured I got to do the stairs as much as I can before I move on to my new office in suburbs with only a single flight of stairs. As I noted, until we get more sunlight in the evening, I don’t think I’ll be able to ride to work, though January would otherwise be tough with the snow and ice and bike trail. Not to mention the cold.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:45 am with sun having an altitude of 25.6° from the due south horizon (-45.2° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:40 pm with the sun in the southwest (233°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (241°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 20 seconds with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 20 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:31 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 44 degrees. There will be a south breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 19 minutes of daytime, a decrease of one minute and 21 seconds over today.

Yesterday, I went out to lunch with the colleagues 🍔 🍣 at the fancy swanky War Room restaurant across from the Albany Capitol Center. I’m just glad I wasn’t paying for lunch and it was on the company credit card. Being the hillbilly of the group, 👩‍🌾 I always order the worse thing on menu — I got the Buffalo Burger, which despite the delicious sounding description menu, came out looking like a sad McDonald’s hamburger with a not-so-good sauce. I should have ordered the sushi lunch — the sushi appetizers I had were delicious. Would have been more healthy omega-3 fats too compared to that rather nasty $26 burger. I thought for that price, it would be a big-beefy burger with a good bun and excellent fries, none of which was true. So if you’re a big shot politico and lobbyist, and you go to the War Room, only order the sushi. Consider this to be your warning, especially if you’re a hillbilly like me.

That said, I’m kind of glad to be moving to the new office in North Albany 🏢 away from the craziness of Downtown Albany and all the political things. I have a feeling once I’m up in North Albany working I won’t get invited to all these lunches and political events downtown, and can just focus on the data science work for work, running lists and calculations 📄, and not all these real political social things. 👪 I often prefer to work in solitude, get things done, produce results and avoid the politicing and social stuff. I’m kind of an introvert.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before 10pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 36 degrees at 4am. Nine degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around November 2nd. South wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 31 degrees. The record low of -2 occurred back in 1875.

Dreary evening ahead, 📖 but I’ll get home and cook up some salmon in the oven 🐠 and then get a book out to read and do some of the Udemny course on machine learning 🤖 and head to bed early 🛌 seeking the warm of my heated blanket. My heat is off for now, I don’t need it if going to be above freezing, I’d rather just have a warm bed and warm food. I like living on the cooler side of things, it makes winter camping all them more delightful. ❄️

Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy 🌥, with a high of 49 degrees at 12pm. Six degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 17th. South wind around 6 mph becoming northwest in the afternoon. A year ago, we had cloudy skies. The high last year was 41 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1998. 6.8 inches of snow fell back in 2019.❄

Staying in town this weekend. 🏘 Probably stay home on Saturday, go down to the library for a while. 💻 And then maybe to Walmart to get some groceries, particularly spices.

Looking ahead to Sunday, rain likely, mainly after 1pm. 🌧️ Mostly cloudy, with a high near 46. North wind around 6 mph becoming east in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. Typical average high for the weekend is 43 degrees.

Sunday I’ll be going out to see the folks 👪 and have Sunday dinner. Turkey soup for dinner. Should be delicious. It’s always great to visit them, even if otherwise it will be a quite wet and dreary day. But not all days can be sunny, and at least it’s not snow or road salt season yet.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until Bill of Rights Day 📜 when the sun will be setting at 4:24 pm with dusk at 4:54 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, sleet and temperatures between 33 and 16 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 38 degrees. We hit a record high of 61 back in 2015.

Chautauqua Gorge

The mouse got away from the mouse zapper 🐭

One of the other directors at work was saying how wonderful those electronic mouse zappers are but I avoided buying one as they’re like 20 bucks. At first it was great, catching three mice with no mess or blood, just open and dump the reusable trap but last night I heard a mouse and the zapper was tripped but no mouse to be found. Much like the snap traps, the mice are somehow getting away. Annoying. Same thing happened with the bucket drowning trap – catch a ton at first and then the rest get away.

Good morning! Mostly cloudy and 30 degrees in Delmar, NY. 🌥 There is a west-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Things will start to thaw out at around 7 am. 🌡️

Up a little after 5:30 am ⏰ I decided to the route involving eggs 🥚 and spinach with onions, beans, broccoli and whatever else I wanted like cottage cheese and ;nutrional yeast and hot sauce. 🍳 It was good except for the egg I dropped on the floor and had to clean up half awake. 😴 I didn’t need to get up that early to cook but I had to run to the bathroom 🚽. That said the electric blanket felt wonderful this morning, still resisting turning on the central gas heat downstairs.

Walking 🚶 down to the earlier express bus 🚍 from the Park and Ride. A bit too cold and wet to ride to work 🚲 today plus Lynne is leaning on me to attend yet another Colonie meeting about developing even more of the Pine Bush. This week it’s housing, a change from the warehouses and industrial solar facilities. 🏘 🏭 🌲I’ll catch the 182 up there after work I guess. Walking laps in the Concourse.

Figured with that extra cup of coffee ☕ probably best to walk the Concourse and then when I inevitably need to run to the restroom I can stop there. At least with the eggs and hopefully the full nights sleep – I was asleep a little after eight – 🛏 I won’t have the blood sugar crash 😴 of yesterday around ten o’clock in the morning when I could barely keep my eyes 👀 open reading that cap grant 📝 I was reviewing on my desk. It inevitably wasn’t the most excited organization without colorful people running it like the brain 🧠 teaser of one I got later in the day.

I am blaming the cream of wheat 🌾 with the blueberries 🫐 and chia seeds and greek yogurt for the crash but it probably was as much getting up at five o’clock to bake the bread and soup, listening to the Bread Greatest Hits record 💿 and that very boring 💤 cap grant I was reviewing. 🔎 I guess every day at work can be exciting, some days are just dull. That said, the blueberries and cream of wheat did hit the spot.

Today will have a slight chance of snow showers before 7am. Mostly cloudy 🌞, with a high of 44 degrees at 11am. Six degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 28th. Northwest wind 6 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 42 degrees. The record high of 70 was set in 1973. 14.4 inches of snow fell back in 1972.❄

That fifteen bean soup 🥣 and homemade bread 🍞 really hit the spot on the cool evening last night, it was good on a cool evening. I went for my evening walk 🚶 shortly thereafter headed to bed 🛏 with the heated blanket trying to watch as much of the Udemy course that I could with my eyes open before going asleep. That said, I’ve been gassy 😲 since eating that especially with that bread that contains all of those shredded carrots 🥕.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 11:41 am with sun having an altitude of 29.2° from the due south horizon (-41.6° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 10.7 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 3:53 pm with the sun in the west-southwest (239°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-southwest (246°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:35 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 11 seconds with dusk around 5:04 pm, which is 57 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 The best time to look at the stars is after 5:40 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies 🌃 and temperatures around 43 degrees. There will be a northwest breeze at 14 mph. Today will have 9 hours and 51 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 11 seconds over yesterday.

I got oranges 🍊 for a snack in the office 🏢 as they are coming back into season and it’s important to have lots of Vitamin D with the darker days ahead and inevitably more people getting sick. 🤒 I was doing the muzzle thing for a while when I got back from West Virginia 🗻 though I stopped but if I hear sick people in the office that I can’t persuade to go home, I’ll put it back on.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃 , with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. Seven degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 7th. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable after midnight. Another cool autumn evening ahead. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 21 degrees. The record low of 14 occurred back in 1939.

A fairly typical mid November weekend with showers for opening day in the SZ. 🦌 Saturday, a chance of showers before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 50. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Bang, bang. 🔫 Sunday, partly sunny, with a high near 44. Typical average high for the weekend is 48 degrees.

I am just focused on the Friday after Thanksgiving 🦃 for getting out of town. I am already tired of the Albany and ready for more nights 🌃 in the wilderness. But who knows what the weather will be like at that point but one can hope. 🤞

Looking ahead, there are 3 weeks until Repeal of Prohibition Day 🍺 when the sun will be setting at 4:23 pm with dusk at 4:53 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 44 and 26 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 42 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 2001.

Looking Down Into the Gorge

A nice morning after a cool and windy weekend at Rennselearville State Forest 🌀

It was nice to get away for two nights, only a quick trip from home. Not a lot of gas or costs which is good plus some great views, chances to ride and walk in the woods.

Good morning! Mostly sunny ☀ and 52 degrees at the Rensselaerville State Forest. There is a west-northwest breeze at 8 mph. 🍃. The dew point is 49 degrees.

Nice morning today 🌅 but a bit chilly. But it’s the second half of September and I’m in the high country of Albany County so it’s to be expected. Didn’t run out of propane which became a concern yesterday when I noticed the tank was getting light and it’s been about ten nights in the woods since filling the tank on vacation, though many did not involve using the heater much.

Today will have increasing clouds ☀ ➡ ☁, with a high of 65 degrees at 4pm. Nine degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical day around October 7th. Maximum dew point of 51 at 10am. West wind around 8 mph. A year ago, we had cloudy skies in the morning with more sun in the afternoon. The high last year was 72 degrees. The record high of 89 was set in 1942.

Taking camp ⛺ down relatively early 🕒 as I’m thinking about exploring Huyck Preserve 🐸 for a while before going to the folks house 🏡 early to pick apples 🍏 and Sunday dinner. 🍠🍗 Going to be rain ☔ by evening and I don’t want to get home that late with the earlier sunsets.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 12:52 pm with sun having an altitude of 49.8° from the due south horizon (-21.1° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 5.1 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. Autumn is rapidly approaching. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 6:28 pm with the sun in the west (268°). 📸 The sunset is in the west (274°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 7:05 pm after setting for 2 minutes and 54 seconds with dusk around 7:31 pm, which is one minute and 47 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the Waxing Crescent 🌒 Moon in the west-southwest (249°) at an altitude of 6° from the horizon, 244,955 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 8:07 pm. At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 60 degrees. The dew point will be 51 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 12 hours and 27 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 2 minutes and 51 seconds over yesterday.

Yesterday was a somewhat slow day and by midday I was a bit cold 🥶 so I retreated to my truck cap, took a nap and watched YouTube. 📹 Then the sun came out and warmed up a bit, wind which was roaring slowed and went for a ride to the Hillicross Parcel 🏞 then around some of the dirt roads and haul roads 🚲 at the State Forest. Then came back, fried up some potatoes, spinach, snap peas and salmon 🐠 then went for a hike through the woods to the hill overlooking Camp Cass. Came back had a nice fire 🔥 until around ten. Very starry ✨ night, saw two shooting stars before retiring to bed around ten. With the breeze I kept the fire small as it was a rather sparky evening. Not worried about a grass fire but didn’t like all the sparks heading towards my truck for obvious reasons.

Tonight will have showers, mainly after 10pm. 🌧 Low of 53 degrees at 1am. One degrees below normal, which is similar to a typical night around September 19th. Maximum dew point of 53 at 1am. 🏖️ Light and variable wind becoming east around 6 mph in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. In 2022, we had partly cloudy skies. It became humid as the night progressed. It got down to 62 degrees. The record low of 35 occurred back in 1986.

I was hoping to get up to the Adirondacks next weekend for a long one, ⛺ but we’ll see with the weather. I doubt there is much color change yet 🍂 and as of now the long range for next weekend isn’t all that great. But September weekends are rapidly expiring and October is quickly coming. As of now I’m thinking of possibly taking a week the third week of October but things could change.

Looking ahead, there are 2 weeks until October 🎃 when the sun will be setting at 6:40 pm with dusk at 7:07 pm. Happens so quickly. On that day in 2022, we had partly sunny and temperatures between 69 and 46 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 68 degrees. We hit a record high of 90 back in 1927.

A Fall Reflection Seen from Wakely Dam

Back to work for three more days assuming that the local bus arrives 🚏

It’s running late but so am I. Some of it is my fault, I didn’t get a real early start and I rode my bike to the store first for groceries. I needed more fresh fruit for the coming week and more rice and beans so I could cook prior to vacation.

Good morning! Happy Tuesday. Partly sunny and 71 degrees at the Elsmere. NY. Calm wind. The dew point is 67 degrees. The muggy weather ends Sunday around 2 am. 😓

I tell you I might have been better riding Blackie to work rather then catching the bus, 🚌 seeing how late it’s running today. But I decided to go to the store, stock up my pantry 🍑 🍏 🍌 with lots of fruit and veggies 🌶 🫑 🍄 and also rice and beans. 🍚 I soaked black beans and will cook them tonight, followed by red beans tomorrow so I can bring them out on vacation. Vacation starts on Friday. 🏊‍♀️

Today will have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms after 3pm. Partly sunny 🌞, with a high of 86 degrees at 4pm. Two degrees above normal. Maximum dew point of 68 at 10am. West wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. It was somewhat humid. The high last year was 88 degrees. The record high of 97 was set in 1963.

I am going to build an updated list of everything I need to pack 🎒 as it seems like my packing list has gotten very out of date in recent years and it means I sometimes forget things, especially as my equipment and tastes have changed for camping.

Solar noon 🌞 is at 1:02 pm with sun having an altitude of 67.1° from the due south horizon (-3.8° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 2.5 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour 🏅 starts at 7:44 pm with the sun in the west-northwest (291°). 📸 The sunset is in the west-northwest (298°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 8:24 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 16 seconds with dusk around 8:56 pm, which is 57 seconds earlier than yesterday. 🌇 At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter 🌓 Moon in the southwest (214°) at an altitude of 26° from the horizon, 241,681 miles away. 🚀 The best time to look at the stars is after 9:38 pm. Tonight I am going to a public hearing about yet another development in the Albany Pine Bush 🌲 🌲 🦋 with the hope of getting home early enough to pack some of my clothes tonight 💼 and maybe go through one of the supply boxes in my truck to get it organized. Tomorrow, I want to do bulk of my packing, as Thursday I need to run to the store for rope and a few more miscelleanous things, and the more I do early and double check the less ✅ I think I’ll be likely to forget.

Tonight will be partly cloudy 🌃, with a low of 63 degrees at 6am. Typical for tonight. Maximum dew point of 67 at 6pm. South wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight. On this day in 1965, Bob Dylan goes electric as he plugs in at the Newport Folk Festival, signaling a major change in folk and rock music. 🎸The crowds boo and his. Not very respectful. In 1993, The Saint James Church massacre occurs in Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa. Liberals use it as an excuse to take away people’s gun rights in Australia, 🔫 which weren’t protected by an active gun culture or second admendment like in America.

Getting ready to head out of town. 📦 Just a lot of packing and picking up things, though honestly for two nights it isn’t that much stuff I need especially as there isn’t much snow around. I’ll bring the shovel just in case but I’m not expecting a lot.

I really have mixed emotions about it all. 🛻 It looks like a cold winters day 🌬️ though the weekend will improve as it goes on. I don’t enjoy camping and traveling the way I once did, I have more and more anxiety about driving. But on the other hand, I do look forward to the open country 🐄 and the rural landscape, and the fire 🔥 once its going and a nice warm dinner. Then hiking the truck trails tomorrow will be nice. But it’s also a lot of money I don’t have though I’m sure it will work out as my tank is still mostly full on my truck and I don’t need that much in groceries and supplies. Part of Mission Fifty is figuring out what is next, I’m not sure I want to keep doing the things in my forties that I found fun in my twenties and thirties.

Got to check ☑ the oil 🛢 and load up the truck. Double check my packing list. Go through a second time and hopefully be on the road a little after 9:30 as I need to get groceries and supplies on my way out and want plenty of time to set up, gather firewood and maybe go for a walk before dark. ⛺

I was looking at my paystub 🎫 and I noticed that they are taking out more for deferred comp now that the federal limit has been raised. It’s good, in the sense that I’m saving more money for retirement though it also means that I have less for today, saving and investing. But it’s pre-tax, so it’s saving money living in a high tax state like this is good. Plus there are years of dividends and market growth ahead. But it still feels like I’m getting squeezed yet another way. 🎐

Looking ahead, there are 4 weeks until Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 when the sun will be setting at 5:23 pm with dusk at 5:50 pm. On that day in 2022, we had partly cloudy, snow showers and temperatures between 26 and 12 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 35 degrees. We hit a record high of 59 back in 1981.
