Daily Update – March 14, 2022

Good morning! The Monday after daylight savings time has come back around again. ๐ŸŒ…

With the clouds it seems darker than yesterday. โ˜๏ธ But it’s nice with so much extra daylight in the evening. For a day supposed to reach the fifties by evening, the morning is awful cool. Not spring yet.

๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผOnly 6 days remain until the first day of calendar spring!๐ŸŒน๐ŸŒป๐ŸŒผ

Overcast and 25 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜๏ธ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There are 4 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Yesterday I went skiing ๐ŸŽฟ at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for a while but by midday the snow wasn’t that great. Then I went out to the folks house ๐Ÿ‘ช for cabbage and corned beef ๐Ÿ€ and skied a bunch more with the dog ๐Ÿถ out back.

It’s nice having that extra sunlight in the evening. ๐ŸŒ‡ I went for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ with still some daylight to spare and did not have to drive home in the dark. ๐ŸŒƒ Looking forward to when I can go down to the park ๐Ÿž again with a book ๐Ÿ“™. Had the library not been closed on Saturday due to the snow storm I probably would have gone there. I’ll probably go more now that they’ve dropped the muzzle mandate ๐Ÿ˜ท as I don’t mind wearing a mask but not when I’m sitting down and working.

I don’t mind wearing the muzzle in public places ๐Ÿ˜ท like crowded elevators or buses but not while sitting down and working. I’m so used to at this point just wearing the muzzle and boiling then in soapy water ๐Ÿ’ฆ every Sunday afternoon. It just becomes routine and if it keeps me from getting the COVID or a cold it’s worth it.

Besides the GIS class I’ve been taking ๐Ÿ—บ, I’ve been lately doing a map atlas a day I post on Facebook. It’s fun because it gets me looking for interesting sources of map data each day and new techniques for presenting information. ๐ŸŒŽ There is a lot you can do with a combination of R programming language and QGIS with a python thrown in. Using R often makes complicated map joins quick.

Replaced the Microsoft building footprints with a combination of the NYSERDA building footprints and the NYC planning department footprints on my PostGIS database on my laptop. ๐Ÿข The Microsoft building footprints aren’t bad and are far more extensive in rural areas than what was available in OpenStreetMap but had a lot of problems accurately displaying urban buildings. Then again, Microsoft building footprints was generated with machine learning while NYSERDA checked them against source photography. ๐Ÿ”Ž

Tomorrow I’ll probably wash my truck ๐Ÿ›ป and go store for suppliers. ๐Ÿ Lots of little things I need – shoe rubber cement for fixing my ski ๐ŸŽฟ boots again, and fixing the trash can lid, toilet ๐Ÿšฝ cleaner and drain solvent to improve the bath ๐Ÿ›€ drain. Cheese ๐Ÿง€ as I got to have my dairy ๐Ÿฎ and more frozen fruit. ๐Ÿ“ I have to work late tonight so it won’t happen today but going to be a mild week for a car wash. Then some point next month I’ll have to sand and paint over the rust again on Big Red.

Two Hours Free Parking

Everybody's talking about #inflation these days. But if you visit Romney, West Virginia be aware the fine for over staying parking on Main Street is $10.

December 24, 2019 Night

Good evening on this Christmas Eve 🕯๏ธ ! Partly cloudy and 27 degrees in Delmar, NY. There is a north breeze at 5 mph. 🍃. There are 2 inches of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around noontime. 🌡๏ธ

Had a nice lunch with the parents and my neice and sister 👪 and we exchanged presents 📦. We had macaroni and cheese for lunch although I guess tomorrow my parents are also doing a formal Christmas dinner 🍲. My neice is already getting close to four, I remember her baby shower a few years ago 👶. She’s got such a large vocabulary and is so smart being plugged into the whole Saratoga scene.

Hiking Bennett Hill was nice but I need to repair microspikes that I strap on my boots 👢. One of them had a wire break while another had a chain 🔗 pop loose. Easy enough to fix but walking back after sunset with the microspikes off it was slippery and I sort of twisted my ankle a bit. I’m fine though. I did enjoy the sunset and the rural agricultural landscape. 🚜 I miss that so much living in the city even though I do live far enough on the outskirts of the city I can still tell when the farm down the street is spreading manure. 💩 Someday I’ll move to some rural areas a few miles out from a small town like an Oneida or a Utica or a Plattsburgh but not in New York with all the gun laws and fire restrictions.โ›” But in the mean time, next week’s road trip should be great.

I was going to go out for my evening walk 🚶 after I got back from hiking Bennett Hill but I was tired and got watching the YouTube videos I downloaded this week. 🎥 I probably watch too much but at least it’s add free and a lot of stuff I watch is educational even if it’s not as good as reading 📖. When I’m camping in the Finger Lakes next week I’ll do a lot more reading for sure. I thought about riding the exercise bike 🚲 but I’m not sure if my neighbor was home – his lights were off but his car 🚙 was in the drive. I think he may have gone to the city on a bus or with a designated driver. 🍻 I’m still not sure if I’m coming down with something or it’s the Lyme disease. I am feeling again like I was in early November. I’m not thinking 💭 it will impact my trip next weekend but who knows.

I was watching this amazing video of a weather balloon with a camera floating up from earth to the stratosphere. โ˜ I guess the same thing you’d see on a plane โœˆ but I haven’t been on an airplane in years and it’s fascinating to see the different – and quite thin layer that seperates all of mankind from the vast emptiness of outer space that is extremely hostile to all life. 🌎 The atmosphere is really only a few miles thick. Honestly, I really like the idea of the Space Force and a greater emphasis on the understanding of the earth’s climate and the boundaries between space and the earth. 🚀

Christmas Eve will be partly cloudy 🌤, with a low of 19 degrees at 5am. One degree above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 23rd. Maximum wind chill around 15 at 4am; Northwest wind 3 to 5 mph. In 2018, we had light snow in the evening, which became mostly clear by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 24 degrees. The record low of -22 occurred back in 1969.

Tonight will have a New Moon. 🌚 Not much too see though as tonight is fairly cloudy. The sun will rise at 7:23 am with the first light at 6:51 am, which is 25 seconds later than yesterday. 🌄 Tonight will have 14 hours and 57 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 11 seconds over last night.

Christmas Day will be mostly sunny 🌞, with a high of 38 degrees at 3pm. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 10th. I think that’s a bit too optimistic based on other forecasts I’ve seen lately but so be it. I’m thinking more clouds. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph. I have less than a quarter tank of gas in my truck โ›ฝ so I have to be careful how far I go. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 35 degrees. The record high of 66 was set in 1889. 19.2 inches of snow fell back in 2002.โ„

A week from now will be New Year Eve 🎉and my final night of my Finger Lakes camping adventure. It should be a nice trip but the second day might be quite rainy โ˜” based on the forecast but a good chance to get through a book of two in the tent, sitting next to the heater 🎪. They have even less snow there than here at this point, I think it will totally be gone by the time I get there – but fortunately not so muddy because it is expected to be a fairly dry week until Sunday out there. At least next Sunday will give me a chance to do a lot of reading 📖 and maybe some writing too.

For Christmas 🎄my parents got me a nice little rechargeable lantern 🏮 that is perfect in the tent for reading at night especially with the nights so long now and the heater adding to the ambiance. Although also I’m looking forward to some long winter nights and hopefully getting the quality sleep that seems impossible lately at home – it’s terrible 😰 how I keep waking up at 3 or 4 each morning and can’t get back to sleep. 🎅 Maybe it’s Santa Claus waking me up each night, but it seems like every winter my sleep declines enormously. I think it’s too few nights in the woods. I still haven’t tested my big gas lantern, mainly because I have no where to hang it. I really should consider getting a lantern post but the thing is usually in the woods I have trees I can run a rope between to hang the lantern from. I really should do this tomorrow. And maybe start pulling stuff for camping from the attic. Gotta get my holiday decorations out tomorrow to hang at camp. . I’m hoping to also get a few extra Christmas lights and extension cords to use up at camp to replace broken and then cracked ones. 🔌

In four weeks on January 21 the sun will be setting at 4:53 pm,🌄 which is 27 minutes and 28 seconds later then tonight. In 2019 on that day, we had snow showers, cold weather, partly cloudy and temperatures between 5 and -7 degrees. That was a pretty cold day but not unheard of for January. My metrologist friend says he thinks late January this winter will be just as cold if not colder. I guess I wouldn’t mind the cold so much if my place had a better heater and more insulation. Typically, you have temperatures between 30 and 14 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 2006.

Looking ahead, New Years Eve 🎆 is in 1 week, Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 is in 3 weeks, Martin Luther King Day 🖤 is in 4 weeks, Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day 🥛 is in 7 weeks, National Drink Wine Day 🍷 is in 8 weeks, St. Patrick’s Day 🍀 is in 12 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset 🌇 is in 15 weeks, Cinco de Mayo 🤠 is in 19 weeks, Primary Day 🗳๏ธ is in 26 weeks, Latest Sunset 🌆 is in 6 months, Election Day 2020 🗳๏ธ is in 45 weeks and Election Day 2020 🗳๏ธ is in 45 weeks.

 Purple Tree

December 14, 2019 Morning

Good morning! Happy Saturday. Finally the weekend! Next Saturday is First Day of Winter โ˜ƒ๏ธ. Pine Bush Hike next too, supposed to be a ski trip from Madison Avenue Extension 🎿but I got my doubts that we will have much snow left by then. Rain, drizzle and fog 🌁 and 39 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜” There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. 🍃. Temperatures will drop below freezing at tomorrow around 4 pm. โ˜ƒ๏ธ

Not a real nice morning, it’s not only foggy outside but also in my head. 🌁 I woke up early again this morning and had trouble getting back to sleep until I wandered downstairs and took a pee. 🚽 Little achy in my knees too but maybe that because I’ve been spending do much time on the exercise bike. 🚲 Then I got looking at some numbers and stats in Excel and the DEC data. I do have some new data with the DEC latest dump to update a few maps but honestly my map collection 🗾is pretty complete on the blog.

Today will rain likely, mainly after 3pm. Cloudy 🌧, with a high of 46 degrees at 1pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 21st. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. Going to be a real dreary day but hopefully that will eat away at the snow. A year ago, we had partly cloudy skies in the morning, remaining cloudy in the afternoon. The high last year was 45 degrees. The record high of 63 was set in 1901. 12.5 inches of snow fell back in 1956.โ„

Today I am going to my parents house for their Christmas decorating party 🎄. Not going out tomorrow as I have the Save the Pine Bush benefit to go to tomorrow night. It’s kind of in the middle of the city which is annoying because there isn’t much bus service on Sunday night to take me there, so I’m going to have to drive there avoiding the red light camera intersections somehow. 🚦 I really hate driving in the city, my truck gets awful gas mileage on city streets and I might have to fuel โ›ฝ up tomorrow as I haven’t bought gas since the last time I was camping the week before Thanksgiving.

The sun will set at 4:22 pm with dusk around 4:54 pm, which is 12 seconds later than yesterday. 🌇 At sunset, look for rain 🌧 and temperatures around 42 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 4 minutes of daytime, a decrease of 34 seconds over yesterday.

Tonight will rain likely, mainly before midnight. Cloudy 🌧, with a low of 36 degrees at 5am. 15 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around October 30th. Breezy, with a south wind 6 to 11 mph becoming west 18 to 23 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible. In 2018, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became cloudy by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 32 degrees. The record low of -8 occurred back in 1874.

Probably won’t be walking tonight 🚶
but instead riding the exercise bike 🚲 and watching some YouTube videos. At least I won’t have to worry about slipping and falling on the bike compared to walking on icy sidewalks. Two nights ago there was a fair amount of black ice in parts.

Today in 1994, started construction begins on the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze river. โ›ฒ The Three Gorges Dam has been the world’s largest power station in terms of installed capacity (22,500 MW) since 2012. In 2014, the dam generated 98.8 terawatt-hours (TWh) and had the world record, but was surpassed by the Itaipรบ Dam, which set the new world record in 2016, producing 103.1 TWh.

Also, today was a notable date in civil rights history, with the release of the Heart of Atlanta Motel, Inc. v. United States, 379 U.S. 241 (1964), 💖a landmark United States Supreme Court case holding that the Commerce Clause gave the U.S. Congress power to force private businesses to abide by Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination in public accommodations.🏰

One month 📅 from now will be Coldest Week of the Year 🌬 when the sun will be setting at 4:45 pm with dusk at 5:16 pm. The average high temperature is 30 degrees, with a record high of 61 in 1895. It’s already pretty cold โ„ in my book 📙 but it could be colder and will get colder. And I’m half seriously thinking about eventually living off-grid in the much colder Wisconsin, a bit in a world where the climate has warmed a fair amount more over the next ten to 15 years.

East Off Stony Ledge

November 24, 2015 update

As we move through the 9 o’clock hour, we are at about the freezing temperature. I got somewhat of a late start this morning as I was not used to waking up to the cold and having to climb out of bed to turn up the heat. Camping can spoil you.

It was a beautiful trip up through the Adirondacks on Friday. I havenโ€™t been up to Plattsburgh in years and havenโ€™t driven the Adirondack Northway in late fall on a clear day in years. The Greens and Northern Adirondack Mountains were crystal clear, driving along the Northway. If there were more legal spots to stop along the Northway and I had more free time, I would have stopped and grabbed more pictures. Photos are nice, but I always have memories too.

Without my phone working I didn’t have have Waze, so no advanced warnings of police traps. I normally rely on the Waze speedometer, as the truck’s speedometer is off, especially as you increase in speed. I blew past of famous police traps in Keeseville, as you descend past Pok-o-Moonshine, around 64 mph on the Big Red speedometer which is over 70 in real speed. I saw cop glance at his radar unit but he didn’t stop me. I eased off the gas for the rest of the trip.

Finally make it to Plattsburgh a little after 12:30, then stopped at Gander Mountain to look around in buy some 20-gauge deer slugs. I knew I wasn’t necessarily going to drop a deer while I was up there, but figured it would be better to have them not. I was annoyed that they asked to see my drivers license and took down my license number when I bought them. Its just kind of creepy, especially as Cuomo hasnโ€™t implemented his ammunition database, as I donโ€™t really like the idea of government or a private business keeping track of what Iโ€™m buying. I donโ€™t have to give them my drivers license to buy almost everything else like beer and cigarettes, especially now that I look well over 21 years of age.

Stopped at Plattsburgh State and walked around. Even with my jacked up truck, finding street parking was not difficult on Drapper Ave. There always seems to be parking there. A lot has changed and a lot has remained the same on campus. There was a new building on Drapper Avenue, which made me almost miss my turn to that road. Hawkins Hall is mostly the same. The Hudson Hall Annex is new but that was under construction. They are demolishing and rebuilding the elevated walkway around campus. I was hoping to stop by the Political Science department and see some of my old professors but the department was all closed up. They may have been teaching classes. It seemed like there was a lot more African Americans on campus then I remember from back when I went there. They recruit from all over the state, and recently have been offering free tuition to local students who have an โ€˜Aโ€™ average. Snapped a few pictures for memoryโ€™s sake.

Stopped at the Plattsburgh Municipal Library so I could get on the wifi to try to switch over phone to an old but partially working phone. While the StraightTalk website was up, it took a while to figure out how to make it work for that purpose. At first I could not figure out how to switch to an old phone, but eventually got it to work. Killed probably another half hour doing this, and by the time I was back to my truck it was quarter to 2 PM.

I had previously planned to leave Plattsburgh no later then 2 PM. This would get me to either the Deer River area or CC Dam Association / Brasher State Forest camping areas before 4 PM or somewhere there around depending if I had to make any stops. I did have enough time for a quick trip over to Point Au Rouche, but by then I was pushing 2 PM so basically I went to the beach, walked out on it too and snapped a quick few shots. Not having my phone to give me directions, I wanted to make sure I left plenty of time to get up there, lest I get lost or have to drive in the darkness. I was finding my way exclusively by memory of six years ago and the times Iโ€™ve made maps of state forests and studied road maps. Fortunately I have pretty good map memory.

NY 190 was as boring and congested route as always. There was two different speed traps on the road but I limited my speed and kept my truck a safe distance from cars ahead of me which were constantly stopping and turning. The sky turned gray over this super boring road in Indian and wild hillbilly country out by Altona. The wind and then snow squall picked up. It was frigid by the time I arrived in Malone. At least the snow wasn’t sticking at that point as the mercury still read about 35 degrees.

To be continued. I’m near myย destinationย stop.
