January 8, 2023 Night

Good evening! Mostly clear and 26 degrees during my moon lit evening walk here in Delmar. ๐ŸŒ– Calm wind.Things will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 10 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

I was going to stay home this evening after walking about ten miles today ๐Ÿšถ but with the weeks schedule ahead and the moonlit night I decided to go out and walk this evening. Making good progress on breaking in the boots, they’re pretty comfortable now ๐Ÿ‘ข but I figured give them a rest and then do my evening walk with the old ones. I’m really trying to maximize them as much as possible with inflation.

Walked out to Five Rivers Environmental Education Center ๐Ÿธ in the morning, then visited John Wolcott up in Colonie for a few hours and then stopped at Colonie Center Maul to look for reasonably priced dress shirts. First time I’ve been into a shopping maul since the pandemic. I looked at Boscov’s first but ended up at Macy’s. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿป‍๐Ÿ’ผ They didn’t have a lot reasonably priced. I did find one I liked ultimately. That said, I think I’m going to take a risk order online next time from like Amazon or Ebay take the risk and if I find something I like order more.

I felt so out of place at the Maul. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ Especially those fancy department stores like Macy’s and Boscovs. I liked the old Sears better, but truth be told, I’d rather be in the woods ๐ŸŒฒ or a barnyard ๐Ÿฎ then any maul. The whole maul environment seems so oppressive, with so much future garbage on shelves. ๐Ÿ—‘ I guess people need stuff and want fancy things for their suburbanite homes, but I can’t imagine spending money on half the things they sell at mauls. ๐Ÿšœ Of course, that’s why on Facebook I look at farm tractors and implements so much lately. But at least they’re not all shiny and fancy. ๐Ÿš The more time I spend in suburbia the more I want to have my off-grid homestead, as simple as possible. Maybe even no electricity. ๐Ÿ“บ Don’t get me started on the television.

Later on I did an evening hike in the Pine Bush ๐ŸŒฒas it got darker out. The crowds thinned out before dusk, I did the loop from the Discovery Center past the landfills. I really don’t get up to the Pine Bush as much as I should but I don’t like driving ๐Ÿš˜ and try to avoid the city as much as possible. I would and probably should visit John more too but like the Pine Bush I really avoid the city as much as possible. Northway traffic is so heavy. Then I picked up a few more groceries I forgot at the store ๐Ÿฌ on Friday. Should be good for the week now.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 21 degrees at 1am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around February 26th. Calm wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light freezing rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1968.

Tonight will have a Waining Gibbous ๐ŸŒ– Moon with 95% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the east-northeast (76°) at an altitude of 18° from the horizon, some 251,964 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by July 18th. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The Wolf ๐Ÿบ Moon is on Tuesday, January 24. The darkest hour is at 12:03 am, followed by dawn at 6:54 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (120°) and last for 3 minutes and 21 seconds. Sunrise is 11 seconds earlier than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:11 am with sun in the southeast (128°). Tonight will have 14 hours and 42 minutes of darkness, a decrease of one minute and 15 seconds over last night.

Tomorrow will be partly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 40 degrees at 3pm. Seven degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 28th. Calm wind becoming northwest 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 36 degrees. The record high of 62 was set in 2008. 9.9 inches of snow fell back in 1953.

Back to the grind tomorrow. ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿป‍๐Ÿ’ผGot to make that money ๐Ÿ’ต for a better tomorrow. Like walking ๐Ÿšถ it’s one step at a time, learning, thinking and becoming a better person. it’s one way closer to fifty. Money is a key part of Mission Fifty, but there is so much I can do learn and become better also over the upcoming decade. Soft skills can make it easier to succeed beyond age 50, provide income and so many other benefits — and they are as key to Mission Fifty as saving and earning in the mean-time. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿซ When that day comes in 2023, the adventure is really just starting, but the next ten years, on the mission gives me a change to develop who I want to me as I undertake whatever my goals are to be implemented with Mission Fifty. Skills, life experience, are equally as important as money as I look to the next ten years. ๐Ÿ“ˆ

In four weeks on February 5 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (249°) at 5:15 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 34 minutes and 26 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had partly cloudy skies, snow showers and temperatures between 38 and 17 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 34 and 16 degrees. The record high of 59 degrees was set back in 1890.

Looking ahead, Coldest Week of the Year on Average ๐ŸŒฌ starts Next Sunday, 38th Birthday ๐ŸŽ‰ is in 3 weeks, Daylight Savings Time ๐ŸŒ† is in 9 weeks, Last Day of Winter ๐Ÿ‚ is in 10 weeks, 7:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 13 weeks, Average High is 60 ๐ŸŒท is in 14 weeks, 8 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 17 weeks, Mothers Day ๐Ÿ‘ฉ‍ is in 18 weeks, 8:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 5 months, Fathers Day ๐Ÿ‘จ is in 22 weeks, Last Sunset After 8:30 PM ๐ŸŒ† is in 27 weeks, 6:30 Sunrise ๐ŸŒ‡ is in 35 weeks, Constitution Day ๐Ÿ“œ is in 36 weeks, October ๐ŸŽƒ is in 38 weeks, Average High is 65 ๐Ÿ‚ is in 9 months, Day After Election Day ๐Ÿ›€ is in 10 months, 7:15 AM Sunrise โŒ›๏ธ is in 48 weeks and Christmas Eve ๐ŸŽ… is in 50 weeks.

January 8, 2023 Morning

Good morning! The cold returns on this Sunday morning. Sunny and 29 degrees at the Five Rivers Environmental Education Center. ๐ŸŒž There is a north-northwest breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. When the wind picks up it gets cold. Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

This morning is a painful reminder that winter is not done. ๐Ÿฆ It’s cold but sunny this morning with the breeze. I walked out to Five Rivers. ๐Ÿฆ I’m making some progress on breaking the new boots ๐Ÿ‘ข in. Helps when their not laced up so tight. Like most things in life. Some people out at Five Rivers but not super crowded at this hour. Probably see more as I head home.

Today will be sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 37 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around February 18th. Northwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the afternoon. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 24 degrees. The record high of 60 was set in 2008. 8.3 inches of snow fell back in 1923.โ„

I’ve been thinking more about Mission Fifty. One area I want to explore is what kind of skills I want to master before age 50. ๐Ÿš€ One is in the field of software development. I really want to learn more about writing software libraries, GUI programming and more advanced techniques for development, so I can read and improve things. ๐Ÿค– Maybe I need to find an open source project I can cooperate with to learn. But I don’t really like playing with kids. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ป I really should learn to give in and be more flexible in my thinking, but I’m not good at that. It’s just one of many angles I’m thinking about for the mission. Certainly this is a fairly low bar compared to many other goals I have for the next ten years as I head into my fiftieh birthday.

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 12:03 pm with sun having an altitude of 25.1° from the due south horizon (-45.7° vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 12.8 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:55 pm with the sun in the southwest (232°). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (240°) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:40 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 22 seconds with dusk around 5:10 pm, which is one minute and 2 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:46 pm. At sunset, look for mostly clear skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 35 degrees. There will be a calm wind. Today will have 9 hours and 17 minutes of daytime, an increase of one minute and 13 seconds over yesterday.

After Five Rivers, it’s off to see John Wolcott and the crew up in Colonie. ๐Ÿ‘ด And then to find at least one or maybe two dress shirts at one of the big box stores. ๐Ÿ‘จ‍๐Ÿ’ผ Then I’m hoping to hike in the Pine Bush until it  gets dark out. ๐ŸŒฒ Then probably should go to the laundromat, or maybe I’ll wait to Monday. Usually on the weekdays it’s less crowded.

Tonight will have increasing clouds โ˜, with a low of 25 degrees at 5am. Eight degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around March 11th. Calm wind. In 2022, we had mostly clear skies in the evening, which became light freezing rain by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 19 degrees. The record low of -20 occurred back in 1968.

I am watching the weather for next week, and it’s improving. ๐Ÿ• I am starting to think a trip out to Brookfield next week is a realistic option. Probably won’t be for skiing. โ›ท Not enough snow. But it will be cold enough that it shouldn’t be all mud. I would love to get out to Madison County ๐Ÿšœ, it’s been over a year since I’ve been out to that rural, farming part of the state. ๐Ÿ˜Ž Sunday and Martin Luther King Day look amazing for this time of year. But I wonder how the roads will be on Saturday, especially in the higher elevations. I guess old Rensslearville State Forest is still an option.

Looking ahead, next Sunday starts that typically is the Coldest Week of the Year ๐ŸŒฌ when the sun will be setting at 4:48 pm with dusk at 5:18 pm. Based on the weather outlook and La Nina that seems unlikely. On that day in 2022, we had mist, showers, partly cloudy skies and temperatures between 38 and 19 degrees. Typically, the high temperature is 32 degrees. We hit a record high of 65 back in 1995.

December 28, 2022 Night

Good evening! Partly cloudy and 32 degrees at the Elm Ave Park and Ride. โ›… There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. ๏ธThings will start to thaw out at tomorrow around 9 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

Out for the evening walk ๐Ÿšถ a bit later than usual as I washed my truck ๐Ÿ›ป returned cans ๐Ÿฅซ and got gas โ›ฝ before the prices start creeping up come the New Year and the gas tax holiday ending. It’s only sixteen cents a gallon but you know gas stations or at least oil companies will jack up prices by 40 cents to celebrate the end. Though who knows, gas prices are falling nationally as everybody talks recession.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 24 degrees at 5am. Five degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 13th. South wind around 7 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

It is a nice evening with the moon ๐ŸŽ‘ above though the skies are still hazy with only the brightest stars showing. The air has the taste of barnyard on it as they’ve been doing spreading with the snow gone and the ground expected to thaw. Someday soon it will become hay or silage and ultimately just another cold glass of milk ๐Ÿฅ›.

Tonight will have a First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon with 38% illuminated. At 8 PM, the moon was in the southwest (230ยฐ) at an altitude of 27ยฐ from the horizon, some 230,719 miles away from where you are looking up from the earth. ๐Ÿš€ At the state speed limit of 55 mph, you’ll make it there by June 21st. Buckle up for safety! ๐Ÿ’บ The moon will set in the west (263ยฐ) at 10:56 pm.

The Wolf ๐Ÿบ Moon is on Friday, January 6. The darkest hour is at 11:58 pm, followed by dawn at 6:53 am, and sun starting to rise at 7:26 am in the east-southeast (122ยฐ) and last for 3 minutes and 25 seconds. Sunrise is 15 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ„ The golden hour ends at 8:11 am with sun in the southeast (130ยฐ). Tonight will have 14 hours and 52 minutes of darkness, a decrease of 29 seconds over last night.

I’m glad I got my truck washed ๐Ÿšฟ as tomorrow will be warm and sunny which will wake up the tin worm. ๐Ÿชฑ I don’t expect to drive anywhere before the New Year unless of course the weather improves and I do Brookfield. Nobody was at the car wash tonight but tomorrow will certainly be crowded and a lot more snow melt on the roads.

Tomorrow will be mostly sunny ๐ŸŒž, with a high of 45 degrees at 3pm. 10 degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around November 27th. South wind 5 to 8 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 38 degrees. The record high of 71 was set in 1984. 6.0 inches of snow fell back in 1915.โ„

Should be a real nice day, especially for walking ๐Ÿšถin the park at lunch time. Friday will be warmer still but probably more cloudy โ›…. I have to say the rain for New Years Eve is such a bummer. I guess stay home save money. ๐Ÿ’ต Hey, the one upside is that the heat can stay off.

In four weeks on January 25 the sun will be setting in the west-southwest (245ยฐ) at 5:00 pm,๐ŸŒ„ which is 29 minutes and 57 seconds later then tonight. In 2021 on that day, we had mostly sunny and temperatures between 29 and 5 degrees. Typically, you have temperatures between 32 and 15 degrees. The record high of 61 degrees was set back in 1938.

In many ways the year that was has been a bit of a disappointment for me, though at the same time I feel like I learned a lot ๐Ÿง  and saved a lot ๐Ÿ’ต even though the down market isn’t making it apparent. I’ve learned to love and cherish things closer to home ๐Ÿก and that escape to remote country isn’t always essential. And to embrace who I am and what I believe, even if that’s not always popular. To not undervalue what I’ve learned and connections I’ve gained at work. And to believe better times are ahead.

South West

December 28, 2022 Morning

Good morning! Today is the 4:30 PM Sunset ๐ŸŒ† . Evenings are starting to get a bit longer. Of course the 5 pm sunset come later in January is when you really feel it. Those days will be upon us before you know it. Winters aren’t what they once were unless you live in Buffalo ๐Ÿƒ.

Cloudy and 23 degrees in Delmar, NY. โ˜ There is a south breeze at 6 mph. ๐Ÿƒ. There is a dusting of snow on the ground. โ˜ƒ Things will start to thaw out at around 11 am. ๐ŸŒก๏ธ

After a fairly dark and gray start to the morning, a bit of a fiery sunrise ๐ŸŒ… to start out the day. Since Saturday I’ve been exceeding my steps ๐Ÿ‘ฃ goal every day after a previous week that wasn’t so good. 16,500 steps yesterday or about eight miles. My boots ๐Ÿ‘ข though are in terrible shape at this point. Been debating what to get, thinking about getting boots with higher ankle protection especially with the risk of ankle injuries higher in the winter with the ice. Not sure, those boots are more expensive than I wanted to spend.

Town finally got salt on the sidewalks on the icy patches. โ„ I think the town parks department maintains the sidewalks and they don’t work holidays or weekends. So they were slick for a few days where there was snow melt with the cold.

Today will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a high of 39 degrees at 2pm. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical day around December 14th. South wind 6 to 10 mph. A year ago, we had mostly sunny skies in the morning with some clearing in the afternoon. The high last year was 46 degrees. The record high of 61 was set in 1982. 7.0 inches of snow fell back in 1967.โ„

I am totally in love with Governor Kristi Noem and her flame thrower. ๐Ÿ”ฅ I guess she’s my hero because she burns her trash, and smells a little like cow shit. ๐Ÿ„ I mean, she is from South Dakota and runs her family ranch. Kind of like Sonne Farms, a Youtube channel I often watch which both of those things are the case. Flame throwers are popular with conservatives these days, I’m sure some crazy will burn down a building and all the left-wingers will be clamoring to ban them, as they are fun, and liberals hate fun unless it’s having sex with strangers. ๐Ÿšฏ Mostly because conservatives like them, as a fun way to burn wet household garbage. ๐Ÿ—‘ I’ve thought of getting a propane weed burner, their little brother, for starting campfires and other hard-to-burn debris but they are a bit expensive, not nearly as a cool, and it seems like just another thing to own. Maybe when I own my own land and have more crap to burn. ๐Ÿ’ธ No income tax in South Dakota, cheap and often good ag and forest land, the Black Hills. โ›ฐ

Solar noon ๐ŸŒž is at 11:58 am with sun having an altitude of 24.1ยฐ from the due south horizon (-46.7ยฐ vs. 6/21). A six foot person will cast a 13.4 foot shadow today compared to 2.2 feet on the first day of summer. The golden hour ๐Ÿ… starts at 3:44 pm with the sun in the southwest (231ยฐ). ๐Ÿ“ธ The sunset is in the west-southwest (239ยฐ) with the sun dropping below the horizon at 4:30 pm after setting for 3 minutes and 25 seconds with dusk around 5:01 pm, which is 43 seconds later than yesterday. ๐ŸŒ‡ At dusk you’ll see the First Quarter ๐ŸŒ“ Moon in the south (181ยฐ) at an altitude of 40ยฐ from the horizon, 230,448 miles away. ๐Ÿš€ The best time to look at the stars is after 5:37 pm. At sunset, look for partly cloudy skies ๐ŸŒƒ and temperatures around 36 degrees. There will be a south-southeast breeze at 7 mph. Tomorrow will have 9 hours and 8 minutes of daytime, an increase of 32 seconds over today.

I did not get to the store yesterday or wash my truck. ๐Ÿ›ป It was surprisingly cold last night and I decided I was really tired from my first full day back at work after 10 days off. I need to get the salt off it, and I need to get a few supplies, so maybe tonight will be the day. I am pretty sure today I will do it — it’s bit warmer, and I need groceries. Plus I need to return cans. โ™ป Need my nickles back, my truck free of empties, plus get gas โ›ฝ before prices go up next week with the gas tax holiday ending.

Tonight will be mostly cloudy ๐ŸŒฅ, with a low of 23 degrees at 5am. Four degrees above normal, which is similar to a typical night around December 16th. South wind 3 to 6 mph. In 2021, we had cloudy skies in the evening, which became mist by the early hours of the morning. It got down to 33 degrees. The record low of -18 occurred back in 1933.

Mild but still kind of wet for the NYE. โ˜” New Years Eve a chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 46. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New Years Day will have rain showers about, 49 degrees with maybe a few breaks of sun come late in the afternoon. Darn, still doesn’t look good for getting out of town. ๐Ÿ• Typical average high for the weekend is 34 degrees.
